The Diaries of Lottie Price, 1914-1986.
February 8, 1892 - October 11, 1986
These are the diaries of Lottie Price, a farmer's wife who lived in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa for 94 years.
The diaries span a period of 72 years, from October 1, 1914 (at age 22) through October 10, 1986, the day before her death. Missing or lost diaries have created gaps in some of the early years, but from April 1928 through October 1986 the diaries are complete.
The narrative is generally very brief and factual, focusing on everyday events in the family, on the farm, and in the community of Burr Oak. Special care was taken in recording all births, deaths, and marriages. The diaries are therefore a valuable resource for genealogists and local historians.
Lottie Diantha Olson was born in Cresco, Howard County, Iowa, on February 8, 1892, and died in Decorah, Winneshiek County, on October 11, 1986. All of her adult life was spent in and around the village of Burr Oak, Iowa.
Lottie was the first of three daughters born to Peter and Julia Olson. Peter Olson (1864-1938) was a Norwegian immigrant who worked in Burr Oak as a carpenter and blacksmith. Julia (Emery) Olson (1871-1950) was the daughter of George Reed Emery Jr. (1822-1900) and Diantha (McIntire) Emery (1834-1919) of near Bluffton.
Lottie married Henry Price (1895-1967) on September 20, 1916. They had two sons, Daniel Arthur (1917-2010), and Dean Merrill (1920-2003).
The diaries cover the following years:
1914 (October through December)
1915 (January through May)
1918 (January only)
1928 (April through December)
1986 (January through October, but with some months missing during a period of illness).
The following diaries from 1914 through 1959 have been transcribed and are available for online reading:
The diaries from 1960 through 1986 are not yet published, but excerpts and lookups are available upon request. The following years are available for lookups: 1960 through 1972. Two diaries are missing: 1957 and 1967. The diaries from 1973 through 1986 are not available for lookups at the present time.

As a supplement to Lottie's 1945 diary, I am also publishing the V-Mail letters that she wrote to son Arthur Price between January and August, 1945. These provide many more details of their everyday life, as well as occasional references to the War.
