Sat. Jan. 1
Nice day. We went too Decorah in P.M. too see Mama.
Sun. Jan. 2
Nice day. Quite warm. Claude's came over for dinner. Leonard left right
after dinner too go on a fox hunt but the rest stayed until about 4.
Mon. Jan. 3
Not very nice day. Misty, rainy & windy. Roy Wernett butchered a pig for
us right after dinner. Mon helped Arthur a little while in A.M. We all went
up town awhile in P.M. Isa & I went up too visit Lizzie Cassel awhile.
Tues. Jan. 4
Not very nice day. Rained almost all day & when it wasn't raining
it was dark. We worked with the meat all day. Ray Hennings were here & spent
the eve. Cleared off in eve & was a nice nite but rather windy. Got colder
& froze hard.
Wed. Jan. 5
Quite nice in A.M. but cold. Got quite blustery in P.M. & the wind blew
quite hard. Quite slippery. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Went down too see
Mama about 12:30. Isa left for home on the 1:40 bus. We came home about 3. Mama
didn't feel or look as good today.
Thurs. Jan. 6
Dandy nice day although it was rather cool early in A.M. I washed & ironed.
Mon went too Decorah in P.M. & took his driver's test. He was sick
all nite. In terrible pain. Sick too his stomach.
Fri. Jan. 7
Dandy nice day. Very warm. Thawed a lot. I called Dr. Fritchen about 6:30 this
A.M. too come out & see Mon & he said it was appendicitis so he took
him right too the Hospital for an operation which was performed about 10. Dean
came over about 9 too do chores & then Howard Quandahl came too help &
about 9:30 Arthur's came over so the boys did up all the chores. Dean
went home & finished his chores & then came back & took me too Decorah
too see Mon. He was still sick too his stomach at times but was as well as could
be expected. We came home about 4. Got the Advent minister too do chores &
he came just as we got back from Decorah so Dean helped him some before he went
home. Mama is just the same.
Sat. Jan. 8
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Dean came over in A.M. & hauled some hay out
too the cattle with the tractor. Arthur's came & got me about 12 &
we went too Decorah. Took Danny too Krumm's & then we went over town.
I took the Income Tax papers too Frank Miller & then Arthur took me down
too the Hospital. Mon was setting up in a chair when I got there. He feels pretty
good. Dean, Iona & Linda, Arthur & Ruth & Ole & Ludvig came
too see him. Went up too see Mama awhile too. She is pretty good. Had a letter
from Isa.
Sun. Jan. 9
Not too nice a day. Cloudy, windy & quite chilly. Dean, Iona & Linda
came over for dinner & we went down too see Mon in P.M. He wasn't
as well all Sat. nite & this A.M. but was sitting up when we got there &
seems too feel better. Went up too see Mama a minute. We got back home about
4:30 & the kids went right on home. Pearl, Sonny & Susie were over awhile
in eve. Windy cold nite.
Mon. Jan. 10
Not very nice day again. Dark, windy & cold. Ruth came over after me about
12 & I went over there for dinner & then she, Danny & I went too
Decorah too see Mon. He was very sick again this A.M. but better in P.M. Danny
had a good time down there. Harry Q. & Louie K. were there too. Went up
too see Mama a minute. Arthur sold hogs so he used our car. They bro't
it back after they finished chores & left Danny here while they went too
B.O. awhile. Darlene, Sonny & Susie were here awhile in eve. Claude &
Olive have bought Addie Thorson's place & moved up there today.
Tues. Jan. 11
Not too bad a day & not too nice. Not quite so cold, but rather windy. Sun
shone a little. Arthur came after me about noon & I had dinner over there
& then he & I went too Decorah. Went too the Hospital. Spent the P.M.
there. Mr. & Mrs. K., Dean & Philip were there besides Arthur &
I. Mon looked better today, but had rather a hard nite & part of A.M.
Wed. Jan. 12
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Arthur came over in A.M. & hauled
up a truck load of wood for me. Dean came about 12 & we went too Decorah.
Had dinner down there & did some running around & then went down too
the Hospital. Mon is better today. He was sitting up & walked around some.
Had too go too the Bank so Dean took me up there & back & then he went
& had the oil changed in the car (ours). Louie K. & Lena Darrington
were there too visit Mon too. Came home about 4.
Thurs. Jan. 13
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Dean came over about noon & took me too Decorah.
Dr. F. was there & he released Henry from the Hospital. Dean took me up
too the Bank too get some money & then we came home. Mon took it O.K. Dean
did some work after he got back up here. Had another little calf this P.M. Had
a letter from Isa.
Fri. Jan. 14
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Arthur & Danny came over in P.M. I cleaned
the hen house & Arthur hauled up some straw. He put some in the hen house
& some in the shed & cow barn. Had a lot of fun with Danny. Howard was
over in eve. Had a letter from Isa. Mon walked around outside awhile.
Sat. Jan. 15
Nasty day. Rained all day & sometimes quite hard. We went too Decorah about
10:30. Went up too Dr. Fritchen's office & he took the stitches out
of Mon's wound. Mon got a hair cut afterward & I had my hair fixed.
Got home about 3:30.
Sun. Jan. 16
2º above. Nice bright day, but cold & windy. Albert & Florence
came over in P.M. "Sonny" W. was over awhile in P.M. too.
Mon. Jan. 17
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was quite nice, but cold.
We went up town awhile in P.M. I went up too Olive's awhile. Howard was
over in eve. Had a letter from Isa.
Tues. Jan. 18
Not very nice day. Rather dark & chilly. Dean's came just about noon
& were here for dinner. They went too Decorah in P.M.
Wed. Jan. 19
15º below. Cold day. Sun shone even if it was cold. Arthur bro't
Danny over about 1:30 & left him. Ruth was going too a party. Danny didn't
feel very good all the time he was here. Arthur & Ruth came after him after
supper. Dean & Leo Willson bro't Linda over about 1 & left her.
Philip passed away very suddenly this A.M. Just Dean, Iona & Linda there
with him. Had a letter from Isa.
Thurs. Jan. 20
10º below. Cool, windy day. Wind in the south & it was chilly. Had
a good time with Linda all day. Dean & Iona came after her about 4.

Sat. Jan. 22
20º below. Nice bright day but cold. Warmed up some during the day. We
went over too Dean's in A.M. & had dinner. Came home about 1. Mon
went up town awhile in P.M.
Sun. Jan. 23
Rained all day. Terrible day. Not too cold but cold enough too freeze the rain
as it fell so everything was coated with ice. We went too Locust too Philip's
funeral. It was at 2:15 at the church there. Large crowd out. We had lunch there
before we came home. Not very nice going or coming but we got along O.K. as
we had chains on. Got home about 5. Got colder in the nite.
Mon. Jan. 24
"Mon"'s Birthday. Mighty cold day. Rather cloudy in A.M. but
was quite nice & bright in P.M. Arthur, Ruth & Danny were over for dinner.
Tues. Jan. 25
Not very nice day but not quite as cold. Frosty & rather damp. Dean, Iona
& Linda were over in eve. They bro't Mon a box of candy.
Wed. Jan. 26
Not too nice a day again. We went too Decorah about 1:45. Pavement a [glare?]
of ice but we had chains on so we didn't slip but we didn't go very
fast. Went down too see Mama awhile. Claude & Olive were there too. 2 other
ladies in the room with her now. She says she feels good. Got our smoked meat
on our way home from town.
Thurs. Jan. 27
Not very nice day. Dark & dreary but not cold. Started too snow in P.M.
& kept it up all nite I guess. Wind came up & we had quite a blizzard
in the nite. Mon went too B.O. in A.M. Bought a new manure spreader of Gordon
Reid.
Fri. Jan. 28
Zero this morn. Regular blizzard in A.M. Got much colder in P.M. Sun came out
& shone good in P.M. Not quite such a blizzard but still the snow did blow
until about sun down the wind went down quite a lot. I helped "Mon"
with the chores most of A.M. The roads are filled up so the minister couldn't
get here too do chores. Pearl & Sonny were here just at supper time. Cold
nite.
Sat. Jan. 29
24º below this morn. Nice bright day but cold. The snow plow went through
just after dinner. Howard Q. walked down & helped Mon shovel out the driveway
& then we all went up town a little while. Ralph McBrian walked down here
while we were up town so he helped Mon do up the night chores & then Mon
took him home about 5:30. We are done with them now as Mon will do the chores
from now on. We got our mail up town & we got a letter from Isa.
Sun. Jan. 30
20º below. Nice bright day but cold with quite a strong south wind. Arthur
was over awhile in P.M. Wind went down some in the nite.
Mon. Jan. 31
10º below. Rather a dark day. Tried all day too snow but it didn't
amount too much. We canned our smoked meat today.
Tues. Feb. 1
10 below. Nice bright day but cool. I washed & did part of the ironing.
Mon went up town awhile in P.M.
Wed. Feb. 2
26º below. Not too nice a day but it warmed up some. We went too Decorah
about 11. Went down too see Mama awhile in P.M. Babe was there while I was there
too.
Thurs. Feb. 3
Quite a nice day but cool. Mon went too B.O. awhile in P.M. Arthur came over
& hauled up a truck load of wood for us. Dean was here a few minutes at
supper time. I finished the ironing today.
Fri. Feb. 4
Nice day but cold. Mon took Ruth, Danny, Florence, Shirley & I too Club
at Evelyn Van Vleit's. Quite a crowd out. Had baby showers for Ellie Marlow
& Bernell Snell. They got very nice gifts & a lot of them. We went too
B.O. in eve too the dance. Good crowd out & a good time. Rather cold nite.
Sat. Feb. 5
Not too bad a day. Sun shone part of the day but it was cold. We went too Decorah
about 11. I got my hair fixed. Went down too see Mama in P.M. Claude & Olive
were there too. Had a letter from Isa.
Sun. Feb. 6
Quite a nice day but cold. The wind blew quite hard & the snow drifted some.
Mon took Iona Moran & I over too Albert E's & we & Florence
went from there with Bill & Hilda E. too Leo Willson's too a "Shower"
for Rita. Quite a crowd out & she got lovely gifts. Had a nice lunch. Mon
came after us.
Mon. Feb. 7
Nice day. Quite windy with the wind in the south. I washed. We went over too
Arthur's awhile in P.M. Went too Mabel in eve too the High School building
too practice. Fern & Howard went with us. Had a lunch over there before
we came home. Got home about 11:15.
Tues. Feb. 8
My 57th Birthday. Nice day. Quite warm in A.M. but it got colder in P.M. Dean's
& Arthur's were here. Arthurs just for dinner but Dean's stayed
until after 4. We went too Bluffton just a minute before they went home. Iona
bro't her ironing along & did that in P.M. She made an angel food
cake for me. They bro't me a canister set. Arthur's a bottle of
cologne & Mon gave me a box of candy. Got a pretty handkerchief from Isa.
Arthur's bro't our quarter of beef over.
Wed. Feb. 9
18º below. Nice day. Warmed up some but was a cool day. We cut up beef
in A.M. & then Mon went over & got Ruth's pressure cooker &
we canned 7 qts. of beef in P.M. Arthur, Ruth & Danny were here awhile in
P.M. We went too Mabel in eve. Howard & Fern went with us. The Lion's
Club put on a home talent Show & 8 couples from B.O. went over & danced
a couple of square dances. Raymond Young called. Very large crowd out &
we had lots of fun. Good program. Stopped in Mabel for a lunch on our way home.
Got home about 11:30.
Thurs. Feb. 10
10º below. Nice day. We canned meat again today. Went too Mabel again in
eve. Darlene & Howard R's went with us. 8 different couples from B.O.
danced tonite & Mon called. Large crowd out again & the program was
good. We stopped for lunch again in Mabel on our way home. Got home about 11:30.
Fri. Feb. 11
Quite a nice day. We sold our pigs this A.M. Arthur came over early in A.M.
& helped Mon sort them out. Sold 61 & they weighed 13170 lbs. @ $19.10
per cwt & bro't $2515.47. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Went down
too see Mama awhile. She says she feels good. Arthur's bro't Danny
over in eve & left him all nite. They went too a party at Harlan Whitney's.
Had a good time with Danny.
Sat. Feb. 12
Rather a cloudy damp day & chilly. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Large
crowd in town. Didn't go down too see Mama. Went up town awhile in eve.
Snowed & blowed quite hard in eve. We came home about 9:30 & it was
quite a storm then.
Sun. Feb. 13
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. but rather cool.
We finished canning our beef in A.M.
Mon. Feb. 14
Quite a nice day until about 4 P.M. it started too rain & snow. Kept it
up until in the eve. Mon went too B.O. awhile in P.M.
Tues. Feb. 15
Dandy nice day. Somewhat warmer. I washed & ironed & canned 7 qts. of
soup. Mon went too B.O. awhile in P.M.
Wed. Feb. 16
Quite a nice day. Canned 10 more qts of soup today. Mon went too B.O. awhile
in P.M. Dean's were over in eve. Marie Cassel passed away this eve. We
had another little calf this A.M. The heifer that was in the sink hole last
summer.
Thurs. Feb. 17
Quite a nice day. Thawed some. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Mon got a hair
cut. Went down too see Mama in P.M. also stopped too see Roy Halse who had an
operation last Fri. Both are coming good. Had a letter from Isa.
Fri. Feb. 18
Dandy nice day. Quite warm until late in P.M. it turned colder. Thawed a lot.
We went over too Dean's. They had their Sale today. Very large crowd out.
The Locust Lutheran ladies served lunch & a good one. Albert Newhouse bought
the farm. Olive & Marie & her kiddies were there. Marie's came
up on the bus about 4 A.M. Gary is a cute little cuss. Arthur's went over
& got Linda early in A.M. & kept her all day. We went too B.O. in eve
too the Dance. "[Hard?] time" & some good costumes. Joe &
Iona went with us. Big crowd & a good time. Got home about 1:20.
Sat. Feb. 19
Not so nice a day but not too bad. Rather cloudy. We went too Decorah about
10:30. We bought Mama's place today ($1200) so Mon was quite busy. Went
down too the Hospital too see Mama & have her sign the papers. She didn't
look as well today but said she felt good. Got my hair fixed before I went down
there. Went up town awhile in eve.
Sun. Feb. 20
Rather chilly day. Mon & Arthur went up town in A.M. & tried too get
the oil burner too work but they couldn't make it go so Arthur bro't
some of it home & cleaned it up & then they went back up in P.M. &
got it too working O.K. Dean's were over in eve.
Mon. Feb. 21
Not very nice day. Misted most of the day. Not too cold, but chilly. We went
up town about 10. The men came too wire the house up there shortly after we
got there. We came home about 11 & got ready & went too Cresco. Went
too the R.E.A. office & got things fixed up there & then went on too
Decorah & got light fixtures. Got back up too B.O. just as the men were
leaving there. Harvey Rolfs' & Harry [Lensch?] are doing our wiring.
Tues. Feb. 22
Not too nice in A.M. Rather cloudy & damp but it cleared off about noon
& was sure nice in P.M. Thawed a lot. Mon was up town all day when the men
were wiring. They were here for dinner. Dean's came just after dinner
& stayed until after chores. Dean went up town a little while in P.M. Iona
& I got rid of a lot of old stuff. Had a big bonfire. Mon got home about
4. Dean & I cleaned the hen house & then he & Mon hauled up a jag
of wood. Dean traded in his old coupe yesterday & got a 5 passenger Chev.
It looks good.
Wed. Feb. 23
Quite a nice day. Mon was up at the other house most of the day. The men finished
wiring up there this P.M. They were here for dinner. Dean bro't a load
of stuff over in his car in P.M. Mon went too Cresco & right back in P.M.
Thurs. Feb. 24
Not too nice a day but not too bad. Mac's men came up in A.M. & moved
our combination stove & refrigerator up too the other place. Arthur &
Dean bro't Dean's cook stove over about noon & we got that set
up. Mon came back about 12:30 & then he & the boys took our heating
stove up too the other place & bro't Mama's stove down here.
Iona, Linda & Edna Quandahl came over with Dean after dinner & they
took up our old rug & scrubbed the floor & put Iona's rug down.
I went up town with the men in P.M. Loyal & Isa came about 5 P.M. We went
up too the other house in eve awhile & then Loyal went back too Davenport
& Isa stayed with us.
Fri. Feb. 25
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a lot. We moved today. Got just about all our stuff
out of the house before Dean's came with their loads so we got most of
their furniture set around for them. Arthur hauled our stuff & Willson's
& Leonard Gunderson hauled theirs. We went up too Olive's for dinner.
Got up here about 5. Made up our beds, had a lunch & sat down & rested
awhile & then got ready & went too the dance. Not many out & not
as good a time as usual.
Sat. Feb. 26
Not too bad a day & not too good. Mon went down too Dean's in A.M.
awhile & then we went too Decorah awhile in P.M. Went down too see Mama
a little while. Mon felt pretty bum all day & nite. Dean came up a little
while in eve. Isa was sick in eve & nite. Terrible accident down by Geo.
Wright's late this P.M. Two men were killed. 4 more hurt terribly. 1 died
later.
Sun. Feb. 27
Cold windy day. Mr. Rolfs came up early in A.M. & put up our sitting room
light. Mon & I went & got Mama this A.M. We went down too Dean's
in P.M. Linda's second birthday. Had a good time with her. Olive was over
awhile late in P.M. Isa feels some better today.
Mon. Feb. 28
Nice bright day but plenty cold & windy. We worked all day trying too straighten
up the house. Cleaned Mama's things out of the pantry in P.M. & put
some of my things in. Olive was over in P.M. & helped. Mon went down &
helped Arthur some in A.M. & then Arthur went & got a stock hog for
him. He bought it from Clyde Quandahl.
Tues. Mar. 1
Quite a nice day. We worked most of the day trying too straighten things around.
Mon went too Decorah in P.M. awhile. Aunt Alice, Uncle Geo., & Olive were
here in P.M. awhile. Mon & I went too Mabel in eve too a dance. Fern &
Howard went with us. The Lion's Club entertained us for our helping out
in their "doings" that they put on. We had a good dance & a
nice lunch.
Wed. Mar. 2
Not very nice day. Not cold though. We didn't do too much. Just rested
some. Olive & Florence were here in P.M. also Jerome McCabe.
Thurs. Mar. 3
Not very nice day. Rather dark & dreary. Thawed a lot. Albert E. came up
& got Isa about noon & she went down there & spent the day. Florence
came with her in eve & spent the eve.
Fri. Mar. 4
Dandy nice day. We washed (& had a big one) & did our ironing. Isa went
over too Olive's awhile in P.M. Rev. Arnold's were here in P.M a
few minutes. Myra Smith had a stroke this morn. Mon & I went down too Dean's
a few minutes late in P.M.
Sat. Mar. 5
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. but cooler. Aunt
Alice & Kate M. were here in A.M. We went too Decorah in P.M. Isa &
I got our hair fixed. I went down town with Mon a little while in eve. Wilma
& Alice were here in eve. Little daughter born too Joyce & Wayne Headington
this P.M.
Sun. Mar. 6
Quite a cold windy day but nice & bright. We were all over at Claude's
& spent the day. Lawrence & Howard Donlan were there awhile in P.M.
too.
Mon. Mar. 7
Quite a nice day but a chilly wind. Arthur & Ruth went too La Crosse today
& left Danny with us. Had a good time with him. We cleaned out the west
room & closet upstairs. Olive was over in P.M. Mon went too Decorah in P.M.
& got the car washed & greased. Dean, Iona, Linda & Mrs. Gjetly
were here in eve.
Tues. Mar. 8
Not too nice a day. Dark & dreary. Mon & I took Isa back too Davenport.
Mama stayed during the day at Olive's & Olive stayed over here at
night with her. We stopped for dinner at Maquota. Left here at 9 & got down
there at 3. It rained all the way from Dewitt too D. & most of the night
too. We spent most of the eve down in Aunt Eunice's room with her &
Vin's. We slept in her bed. Myra Smith died this P.M.
Wed. Mar. 9
Colder with some snow. Not very nice in Davenport but we left there about 9:20.
Got out of town & the pavement was covered with ice & so slippery. We
turned around on the slippery pavement part way between D. & Dewitt &
slid off the grade. A couple of young men helped us out & we came crawling
along toward home. No ice on the pavement after we left Dewitt & the farther
north we came the better it got & the nicer the weather. Stopped at Guttenberg
for lunch. Got home about 4. Fixed up the fires & then went & got Mama.
Aunt Alice was here a few minutes. Mon & I went down town in eve. I went
too practice at Alberta's.
Thurs. Mar. 10
Quite a nice day. Didn't do much of anything.
Fri. Mar. 11
Regular March day. Snowed at times & sun shone at times. Rather chilly but
not too cold. Went over too Olive's a few minutes in A.M. Mon went down
too Dean's a little while in P.M. I went too Myra Smith's funeral.
Florence, Ruth, Anita & I sang. "In the Garden", "The
Old Rugged Cross", & "The Streets of Pure Gold." Large
crowd out. Mon & I went too Decorah a few minutes after the funeral. Got
a picture of Linda today & its so cute. Little son born too Merlin &
Bernell Snell this P.M.
Sat. Mar. 12
Quite a nice day but cool. We went too Cresco right after dinner & then
on too Decorah. Large crowd in town. I ran around with Olive some. Dean's
were down there & Linda came home with us. Ruth bro't Danny up about
6 & left him & she went down too Wayne H's. Joyce came home with
the baby this P.M. Jerome McCabe was here for supper but he left before dark.
We had a big time with Linda & Danny. The folks came after them about 9.
Mon went down town a few minutes. Didn't feel very good in the night.
Bad cold.
Sun. Mar. 13
Not very nice day. Rather dark & chilly. I felt like the "dickens"
all day. Ruth bro't Danny up here early in A.M. & left him & she
went too Joyce's & helped awhile. She came after him about 11. We
were alone the rest of the day.
Mon. Mar. 14
Nice bright day but very windy & cold. Mon took me too School meeting at
Lost Nation & then he went on down too the farm awhile. They are putting
a new ceiling in the down stairs bed room. Aunt Alice was here awhile in P.M.
Cold nite. Had a letter from Isa.
Tues. Mar. 15
Nice bright day but cool. Mon & Claude went too Decorah early in A.M. &
then out on the Red Cross Drive. They got home at noon. Mon went down too the
farm & worked all P.M. Uncle Geo & Lizzie C. were here in A.M. &
Kathleen [Rakow?] & Olive in P.M.
Wed. Mar. 16
Quite a nice day but cold. I went up too Miriam's in P.M. too a W.S.C.S.
meeting with Florence. Not very many out. Mon went down town in eve too a euchre
tournament at Gene's. Kendalville played with them & won.
Thurs. Mar. 17
Nice bright day again but cold. Frank Knox & Robert Morrison were here in
A.M. Olive & I went too a Farm Bureau meeting at Clara McCabe's in
P.M. with Ruth & Danny. Quite a crowd out. Had a small lunch. Mon was down
at the farm in P.M. & stayed down there for supper. Olive was over awhile
in eve. Mon didn't go too Lodge tonite.
Fri. Mar. 18
Bright day but cold. Aunt Alice & Kate R. were here in P.M.
Sat. Mar. 19
Nice day a little warmer but still chilly. We went too Decorah about 12:15.
I got my hair fixed & Mon got his cut. Went down town awhile in eve.
Sun. Mar. 20
Quite a nice day. Still cool but it did thaw some. Olive was over a little while
in P.M.
Mon. Mar. 21
Rather nice early in A.M. but clouded up later & started too rain about
noon. Had just little showers for a while but it rained quite hard at times
in P.M. & then rained most of the nite I guess. Quite warm & thawed
quite a lot during the day but got colder in the nite. I washed & got most
of the clothes dry so I ironed most of them in P.M. Mon went down too the farm
in A.M. & bro't a load of coal back up with the tractor & wagon.
He took a load of junk back too the sink hole after dinner. Dean was here a
little while in A.M. & Aunt Alice in P.M. Mon went down town awhile in eve.
Wind blew hard all nite. Little daughter born too Curtis & Ellie Marlow
early this A.M.
Tues. Mar. 22
Not very nice day. I finished the ironing & did odd jobs. Went too choir
practice at Zoa's in eve.
Wed. Mar. 23
Not too nice a day & not too bad. We went down too the farm early in A.M.
Mon started putting Kim Tone on the kitchen after we got home. He had too go
too Prosper & get some more just after dinner. He went down town in eve.
Got a letter from Isa today.
Thurs. Mar. 24
Not too bad a day until late in P.M. it clouded up. Had quite a hard storm about
8 P.M. Quite a lot of thunder & lightning with wind & a hard rain. Mon
worked at the kitchen in A.M. & went down town in P.M. We went down town
in eve. I came home about 8:30 but Mon went too Lodge. He got home about 10:30.
Wind blew hard again in the nite.
Fri. Mar. 25
Not too bad a day. Lester & Isa came on the bus about 3:30 this A.M. Mon
finished up the kitchen in A.M. Lester went visiting around town. Claude took
Olive, Isa & I too Club at Lettie Wright's. Quite a few out &
we had a swell lunch. We went too a Dance at the Hall in eve but no music came.
So Happy went home & got his violin & different ones of us played so
we had some dance any way. Nice crowd out & we did have some fun.
Sat. Mar. 26
Not too bad in A.M. but started too rain about 1 & kept it up all P.M. &
most of the night. Rained quite hard at times. We went too Decorah in P.M. but
it wasn't very nice out in the rain. Dean, Iona & Linda were here
awhile in eve.
Sun. Mar. 27
Cloudy day & quite windy. Lester's went home on the bus at noon. Olive
was here awhile just after dinner. Dean & Iona went too a Show at Mabel
in P.M. & left Linda here so we had a good time with her.
Mon. Mar. 28
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed. Mon took the Red Cross money
too Mr. Bergan in P.M. We went home too Dean's awhile in eve. They bought
some new furniture at Fountain Minn. this P.M. & its sure nice. Sprinkled
some in eve.
Tues. Mar. 29
Not very nice day. Rained almost all day & sometimes quite hard. Olive was
here awhile in P.M. Had a letter from Isa.
Wed. Mar. 30
Arthur's Birthday. Rained & snowed in A.M. but cleared off some in
P.M. but the sun didn't shine. Pretty cool. Mon went too Decorah in A.M.
I went down in P.M. with Florence E. Mrs. Gjetly & Elsie S. went along too.
The W.S.C.S. at Decorah have just finished remodling their dining room &
kitchen & had open house this P.M. so we went too that. It was sure nice.
Had a nice lunch. I felt pretty bum all nite. Rev Arnold's were here a
minute late in P.M.

Not very nice day. Felt bum all day. Mon helped down at the farm until about
3 P.M. They put down quarter rounds.
Fri. Apr. 1
Dandy nice day. I felt some better. Went too Decorah in P.M. too see Dr. Fritchen.
Sat. Apr. 2
Dandy nice day. We went too Decorah in P.M. Mrs. Gjetly rode down with us. I
got my hair fixed. Went down too the Hospital & had a blood count taken
& also went too see Louie K. He is there at the Hospital & they think
with kidney stones. He is in quite a lot of pain. Went down town in eve.
Sun. Apr. 3
Dandy nice day. Mon & I went fishing in P.M. down on the creek south of
Howard's. Had good luck. Got 40 in a short time.
Mon. Apr. 4
Dandy nice day. I washed & did some of the ironing. Mon took Louie K. too
Rochester late in P.M. He wasn't getting any better so they took him there
too see what they could do. Mrs. K & Ruth went along. They left Danny here.
Mon & Ruth got back here about 7:30. We just had supper ready for them when
Arthur came so he had supper too. They went home about 8:30.
Tues. Apr. 5
Nice day only rather cloudy at times & cooler. I finished ironing in A.M.
Mon went down too the farm in A.M. & helped ring the hogs. He got back about
10:30. Went too Charlie Dawley's funeral in P.M. Large crowd out (Advent
Church). Arthur S., Alberta & I sang "The Old Rugged Cross"
& "Going Down the Valley". Rev. McBrian was the minister. Mon
went too Decorah about 6:30 with Howard R. too an I.O.O.F. doings. I went too
choir practice at Zoa's in eve. Babe W. was here in eve while I was gone.
Wed. Apr. 6
Quite a nice day. I went too Lutheran L.A.S. just for dinner. Had a swell dinner.
Audry L., Maude J., Hilda E & Mrs. Conrad Vick entertained. Arthur &
Ruth took our car & went too Rochester this P.M. Mrs. K. came home with
them & was here for supper & then went home on the bus.

Dandy nice day. Mon helped Albert start shingle Aunt Alice's house in
P.M. He went too Lodge in eve. Mrs. Piper was here just at supper time. Little
son born too Gladys & Floyd Blaess this P.M.
Fri. Apr. 8
Dandy nice day. Mon shingled at Aunt Alice's all day. Olive & I went
too a surprise birthday party on Edie Reed in P.M. Quite a few out. Had a nice
lunch. They sent a lunch home too Mama. Had a letter from Isa.

Dandy nice day. They finished shingling Aunt Alice's house this noon.
Mama & I were up there for dinner so were Florence & Norris. Mon &
I went too Decorah awhile in P.M. Went down town in eve.
Sun. Apr. 10
Dandy nice day. Dean's bro't Linda about 10 A.M. & left her
while they went too church. They came back here for dinner & stayed until
about 4:30. Arthur's bro't Danny about 12 & left him & they
took our car & went too Rochester too see Louie. Gerald Nash was with them.
They came home about 5 & Mrs. K. was with them. We took Mrs. K. & Gerald
down too Arthur's. We had a good time with the babies today.
Mon. Apr. 11
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean helped Arthur clean grain
in A.M. & Mon hauled a load of wood up here in P.M. with the tractor &
wagon. Ruth bro't Danny up here about 11 & left him & she went
too Decorah & got a permanent. She & Mrs. K. came after him about 5.
Tues. Apr. 12
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. Dean's came about 9 & we went too La
Crosse. Stopped & got La Verne & [Sharon?] & they went along with
us. Very warm up there. I got a new coat ($35) & a new hat ($6.98). The
girls got new clothes too. We got home about 5:30. We went down town awhile
in eve. Total eclipse of the moon this eve. Saw most of it.
Wed. Apr. 13
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. Mon went too Arthur's & spent the day
helping him. Arthur started seeding today. I raked quite a lot of the yard.
Charlotte McCabe was here awhile in P.M. & Aunt Eunice, Earl & Mettie
were here in eve. It got colder in the eve & nite.
Thurs. Apr. 14
Not very nice day. Cloudy & windy & cool in A.M. Started too rain about
1 & rained quite hard at times. Started too snow about 4 P.M. & got
too be a regular blizzard the rest of the P.M. & nite. Mon helped Arthur
in A.M. They finished seeding the one piece at noon & then he came home.
Ruth, Danny & I went too Decorah in P.M. Danny got a hair cut & then
we took him & had his picture taken. He & I ran around a little but
it was so rainy we went too the rest room & waited for Ruth too come. Were
with Iona & Linda a little while. Florence was here a minute in eve. Got
a letter from Isa.
Fri. Apr. 15
Regular blizzard in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was quite nice. Warmer
in P.M. Plenty of snow but the snow did go some in P.M. Arthur was here a minute
in A.M. & Dean was here awhile in P.M.
Sat. Apr. 16
Quite a nice day, but the wind was rather cool. A lot of the snow disappeared.
Mon, Ruth, Danny & I went too Rochester about 9 after Louie K. but we didn't
get away from there until after 2. Sat in the car a good share of the time waiting
for him too be released. Went right on too Decorah & Ruth & I did some
trading. Arthur was here waiting for Ruth & Danny when we got back here.
Louie feels pretty good but is rather weak. Went too choir practice at Zoa's
in eve & then stopped down town a little while afterward. Rained & snowed
in the nite. Claude & Olive went too Marie's this A.M.
Sun. Apr. 17
Not very nice day. Sun shone some but it snowed & did a little of everything.
Wind blew quite hard & it was cold. Rode too church with Albert E's.
& home with Howard R's. Large crowd out. Shirley R. was baptized.
Mon. Apr. 18
Not too nice a day & not too bad. Mon & I went too P.M. & I got
a permanent & Mon had a hair cut. We went over too Dean's a few minutes
on our way home. Went down town awhile in eve.
Tues. Apr. 19
Mama's 77th Birthday. Dandy nice day. Mon helped Albert E. down at Uncle
Marion's place all day. He was home for dinner. Arthur's, Dean's
& Leonard were here for dinner but none of them stayed long. Aunt Alice,
Mrs. Emmons, the Rev. Arnolds were here in P.M. Olive & Claude got home
late in P.M. & she was over awhile after supper.
Wed. Apr. 20
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon helped Albert in A.M. They finished
at noon. He helped him put the eave troughs on at Aunt Alice's in P.M.
Alberta, Josie, Uncle Aaron, Florence & Elsie S. were here in P.M. Went
down town awhile in eve.
Thurs. Apr. 21
Rather cloudy most of the day. Sprinkled some about 5:30 & then rained in
eve. Went too W.S.C.S. Florence, Elsie, Zoa & Audry Greenslade entertained.
Very large crowd out & a swell dinner. Mon went down too Deans & Arthurs
in A.M. He bro't Ruth & Danny up too the dinner & then took them
back in P.M. He & I worked at the yard, set out an elm tree & some of
the ivy from down home & did other things after I got back from the church.
Mon went too Lodge in eve.
Fri. Apr. 22
Quite a nice day but rather chilly. Dean bro't the tractor up in A.M.
& then he & Mon went back & got the manure spreader. Linda came
back with them. They hauled the manure pile away from where the old barn was.
Put some on Claude's garden & some on ours & then after dinner
they plowed the 2 gardens. Dean & Linda went home about 2 & then Mon
took the tractor home. I went with Ruth & Danny in P.M. over north of Mabel
too a nursery too see about some trees. The man wasn't at home so we didn't
get any.
Sat. Apr. 23
Nice day only terribly windy. Mon went down too Dean's in A.M. awhile.
Came home about 10:30 & we went too Decorah. Very dirty & dusty &
windy down there. Dean's bro't Linda up early in eve & left
her & they went too Decorah. We went down town in eve. I went in too Vin
Kimbers & picked out & ordered some new paper. Linda had a good time
down town. The kids came about 11:15.
Sun. Apr. 24
Dean's Birthday. Dandy nice day. We went down too Dean's & spent
the day. Arthur's came just at noon. He had dinner & then Ruth took
him home so he could work in the field & then she came back & stayed
until about 3:30. Lelia & Stanley were there too. The men went fishing in
P.M. awhile. Got a nice lot of them. Mama fell on the north step & bumped
her head quite hard. We came home about 4:30.
Mon. Apr. 25
Not too nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a very nice warm day. I
washed & ironed. Mon worked at Arthur's all day. Mon went down town
in eve & I went too a Bible Study meeting at Gjetly's with Florence
& Albert. Rained while we were up there & there was quite a lot of lightning
& thunder most of the nite, but not too much rain.
Tues. Apr. 26
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. They took a hog down too Weplers
too be butchered. He came after me at noon & I went down there & helped
clean out the cellar & get the rest of my fruit jars out. Also helped Dean
load up some wood too bring up here. They bro't me home about 4 &
then Dean went back & bro't the load of stuff up with the tractor.
Mon worked at Arthur's in [A.?] M. Edie Reed & Florence & "Babe"
Ward were here awhile in P.M. I went too choir practice in eve.

Dandy nice day. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. & Arthurs in P.M. Mama walked
down too the post office in P.M. Mon went down town in eve. Cool nite.

Nice day. Mon worked at Arthur's today. He went too Lodge in eve &
I went down town too.

Dandy nice day. Mon worked at Arthur's today. Olive & I went too Club
at Inez's in P.M. with Miriam & Phyllis. Most of the members there.
Had a swell lunch. Went too the dance at the Hall in eve. Quite a crowd out
& a pretty good time.

Dandy nice day. Mon was at Arthur's & Dean's both in A.M. We
went too Decorah right after dinner. Ludvig Q. & Florence Bently rode down
with us & Florence came back with us. I had my hair fixed. Went down town
awhile in eve.

Not very nice day. Rained all A.M. & was cloudy most of P.M. Got colder
in P.M. Mon took Aunt Alice & I too church in A.M.

Nice day but terribly windy. I washed in A.M. Mon went down & helped Arthur
awhile in A.M. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Took Mama down. She got a permanent
& then went too see the Dr. Marlene Barth & Robert Ward were married
this P.M. Went too a "Shower" for them at the Lutheran Church in
eve. Olive & I went with Dean's. Very large crowd & they got lovely
gifts. Had a nice lunch & program.
Tues. May 3
Very warm & windy day. Mon worked up across the road today (at Ike's
house). I did odd jobs. We went down too Deans right after supper after some
asparagus roots. Stopped at Arthur's a few minutes on our way home. Went
too choir practice at Zoa's in eve. Warm nite. Had a letter from Isa.

Warm windy day again. Mon worked at Ike's today. We went up too Geo. Brown's
after supper & got some pansy plants.
Thurs. May 5
Warm & rather hot day again & windy. Mon worked at Ike's today.
Clouded up about supper time & we had quite a lot of thunder & lightning
& a little rain. It got cooler in the nite. Mon went too Lodge in eve.
Fri. May 6
Cloudy day. Quite windy but cooler. Mon worked at Arthur's all day. Helping
too get their water works in order. I went too West Union too a W.S.C.S. District
Meeting with the Arnold's. Florence E. went along too. We left here about
9 & got back about 5. Had a nice meeting. Mon went down town awhile in eve.

Quite a nice day. Mon worked at Arthur's today. The Club entertained the
Mothers of the community at the Lutheran Church in P.M. with a program &
lunch. Quite a few out. Had a nice time. Claude took Olive, Mama & I &
Mama rode home with Alice Wilbur. Went down town in eve awhile.
Sun. May 8
Quite a nice day but cool. Mon took Mama & I too church in A.M. Claude,
Olive & Marion were here for dinner. The men went over too the ball diamond
in P.M. Leonard was here awhile after they got back.

Nice day only rather cool all day. Mon worked at Arthur's. Babe Ward was
here awhile early in A.M. & then Olive & I rode up too the cemetry with
her when she went. The Club had bought some [sp---?] & a bunch of us went
up there & set it out. Got home about 10:30 & then I planted garden
the most of the rest of the day.
Tues. May 10
Nice day but cool. Mon & I went too Cresco & Harmony in A.M. looking
for a tractor hitch for the corn planter but didn't find one. He helped
Arthur in P.M. I mowed lawn. We went down town a few minutes in eve.
Wed. May 11
Not very nice in A.M. Sprinkled & rained off & on & some times it
rained quite hard. Mon worked at Arthur's until after dinner awhile &
then he came home. I washed in A.M. & went too W.S.C.S. at Anita's
in P.M. Not many out. We went too Breezy Hill in eve too the "Whisker
Men's" old time dance & old fiddler's contest. Large crowd
out but a lot of them didn't know much about the square dances. Frank
O'Brien won the fiddlers contest. We came home about 12:15. Dean's
were here a minute just as we were ready too go.

Nice day. Clouded up late in P.M. & we had quite a hard rain with quite

nite. They went too a party at Jordan's. Gene Headington died today.

Dandy nice day. Mon was at Arthur's awhile in A.M. Took Danny home. We
went down too Lost Nation too their picnic at noon. Large crowd out & we
had a swell dinner. We went on too Decorah from there awhile. Ludvig rode home
with us. Went down town awhile in eve. Prudence Masters died early this A.M.

Dandy nice day. Mon took Mama down too Babe Ward's early in A.M. &
she spent the day there. She came home with Kecks in P.M. I went too church
in A.M. Claude & Olive went too the ball game with us in P.M. Ridgeway played
B.O. here. B.O. won 15 to 11. I went too church in eve. Miss Ortha Lane a missionary
from China spoke. Not too many out. She was good. Albert E. bro't Aunt
Alice & I home.

Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. Rained quite hard about 4 P.M. &
then off & on during the nite it rained. Mon worked at Arthur's. He
got caught in the rain & sure got soaked. I washed in A.M. Went too Gene
Headington's funeral at the M.E. church in P.M. Ruth, Anita, Florence
& I sang "Going Down the Valley" & "The Old Rugged
Cross". I helped some of the girls serve lunch too the relatives, in the
basement, after the funeral. Florence bro't me home.
Tues. May 17
Quite a nice day although it was rather cloudy at times & sprinkled some
in P.M. Mon helped at Deans' today. I went too Prude Masters funeral at
the M.E. church in P.M. Same singers but we sang "Rock of Ages"
& "Abide With Me". Went over too Lillian's awhile after
the funeral. We set out some strawberry plants after Mon got home & then
we went down town awhile.
Wed. May 18
Nice day, rather windy. Mon helped at Dean's. They finished planting corn
today. I went too Ossian in P.M. with Inez, too a "Stanley" party
at Mae Ward's. Dorothea R., Betty & Lydia W. went along too. We got
our prizes we were supposed too get last year & didn't. Had a nice
time & lunch. I went up too Gladys A's. in eve too plan our W.S.C.S.
dinner.
Thurs. May 19
Nice day. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. awhile & then we went too Decorah.
He got a hair cut & I got my hair fixed. Came home early from town. Mon
went too Lodge in eve. We bro't our smoked meat home & Dean came in
eve & got theirs.
Fri. May 20
Rather cloudy & cool. We went down too Dean's early in A.M. &
Linda came home with us. I canned some of the meat in P.M. Mon cut out the plum
trees north of the house. Dean's came after Linda about 4:30 & Dean
helped Mon take out the snow ball bush. We went too the dance at the Hall in
eve. Not too big a crowd & rather a slow time. Got a letter from Isa.
Sat. May 21
Sprinkled in A.M. & rained in P.M. Quite hard at times. I finished canning
the smoked meat in P.M. We went down town awhile in eve.
Sun. May 22
Nice day. Mon took Aunt Alice, Mama & I too church in A.M. We went too Mabel
in P.M. too the ball game. B.O. & Mabel won 10 - 2. Arthur's were
here a few minutes after we got home. Dean & Linda were home awhile in A.M.
early. Arthur's bro't Danny up in eve & left him all night.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all A.M. & sometimes quite hard.
Brighter in P.M. but plenty chilly. Dean's bro't Linda up early
in A.M. & left her & they went too the Mississippi fishing. They got
back about 7. Left us some nice bull heads. Arthur came after Danny about 8
A.M. Cool nite.
Tues. May 24
Nice day but cool & windy. Mon & I went too Decorah about 8:30 after
the baby chicks. Had too wait awhile for them. We got back up too Dean's
& got them out before dinner. Stayed there for dinner & then came home.
Mon helped Arthur with the water works in P.M. I hoed most of the P.M. Lizzie
was here a while late in P.M. Mon & I went up too Geo. Browns in eve &
got some more pansy plants. We got 200 leghorn [minorcha?] cross pullets &
75 [austia?] white roosters. Cool nite.
Wed. May 25
Nice day. Mon & Claude went fishing in A.M. & P.M. but didn't
have very good luck. I washed & ironed & got ready for L.A.S.
Thurs. May 26
Nice day. Mon worked at Arthur's all day. He came home about 10 A.M. &
took me & my food up too the church. Gladys A., Alice Wilbur, Mrs. Gjetly
& I served for W.S.C.S. Had a good crowd. Took in over $5[8?]. Alice W.
bro't me home. Mama went up too W.S.C.S. & then she went visiting
in P.M. She got home about 5. I went over & helped Olive awhile in eve &
then we went down town a little while & came home with the men from Lodge.
Fri. May 27
Nice day. Was over & helped Olive in A.M. Mon was at Arthur's in A.M.
but in B.O. in P.M. Olive had Club in P.M. Quite a crowd out. Had a "shower"
for Lillian S. & she got such nice things. Had a good lunch. Mon & I
went too Decorah too the Show in eve. "Fabulous Joe" It was a funny
show.
Sat. May 28
Nice day. Earl, Wilma, Larry, Aunt Eunice, Lester & Isa came just as we
started too eat breakfast so I got breakfast for them. Earl's & them
stayed awhile afterward & then they went too Mettie's. We all went
too Decorah in P.M. Mama got a couple of new dresses & new shoes. Lesters
& us went down town in eve & then Lester's went too Claude's
too stay the nite.
Sun. May 29
Nice day. We were all at Claude's for dinner & then the men went too
the Ball game in P.M. Highlandville & B.O. here. B.O. won. Lester's
& us went down too Arthur's & too Dean's awhile late in
P.M. Danny & Linda came home with us & then their folks came up in eve
after them. Lester's stayed at Claude's tonite.
Mon. May 30
Nice day. Mon, Isa & I went down home early in A.M. & then went fishing
down by Joe Wilhelm's. Took Linda along with us. Dean's went too
the Mississippi fishing & Linda spent the day with us. Mon & Isa each
got 5 fish so we had them for dinner. We all went too the cemetry just after
dinner. Earl's came after Lester's about 2 & they went back
too Davenport. Deans' came back just as we finished supper. They didn't
get any fish. Babe & Nora were here awhile in P.M. Had a little shower in
eve. Little son born too Loyal & Helen McIntire this A.M.
Tues. May 31
Nice day. Warm. I washed in A.M. Mon went down too Dean's in A.M. He bro't
a load of wood up in P.M. & then we cleaned up a mess of junk around here
& cleaned the stuff out of the cellar & he hauled that down home too
the sink hole. Aunt Alice was here awhile in P.M. We finished planting the garden
after supper & then Mon went down town a while. Had a little sprinkle in
eve.
Wed. June 1
Rather cloudy in A.M. but cleared off & was very nice in P.M. Plenty warm.
Mon went down too Dean's awhile in A.M. Ruth bro't Danny up here
early in A.M. & left him awhile. I ironed in A.M. I went too Lutheran L.A.S.
at noon. Had a swell dinner. Large crowd out. Myrtle Newhouse, Irene Foss, Alice
Kimber & Bessie Johnson served. Mon went too Prosper in A.M. & got some
screen so he fixed screens in P.M. & I washed windows on the outside. Had
quite a storm in the nite. Thunder, lightning, wind & rain. Lot of rain
fell. We went down town a few minutes in eve. Had a letter from Isa.
Thurs. June 2
Not very nice day. Misty & rainy most of the day. Rather cool. Dean's
were up awhile in P.M. Went down town in eve. Mon went too Lodge. Gas tank went
dry at noon.
Fri. June 3
Nice day. Mon went down too Dean's in A.M. & we went too Decorah in
P.M. Got my hair fixed.
Sat. June 4
Dandy nice day. Mon went down too Dean's & Arthurs awhile in A.M.
& then worked around home the rest of the day. He fixed me a new clothes
line. Mama went down town in P.M. We went down town in eve.
Sun. June 5
Nice day. Mon took us too church in A.M. & then he & I & Claude's
went too the Ball game at Decorah in P.M. B.O. lost 5 to 8. Not very good game
too much fumbling. Muriel T. & Gladys A. sat with us in our car during the
game. Went down too Dean's a few minutes after supper.
Mon. June 6
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon was at Dean's part of the day.
Tues. June 7
Nice day. Vin Kimber came & papered the sitting room. Mon & I dug off
paper & plastered holes most of the day. Minnie Bucknell & Merle Emery
Ander[son?] was here most of P.M. Dean's came up after supper & Iona,
Linda, Lois & I went too a "[Town? ----?] Wedding" put on by
the Lutheran S.S. at the Hall. It was very good & a very large crowd out.
Dean went down too Clyde's. Mon went down too Arthur's awhile in
P.M. They were putting in the pressure pump for the water in the house.
Wed. June 8
Nice day but cool. Olive came over & helped me clean up the house in A.M.
Mon was at Dean's until in P.M. Mr. & Mrs. Wil[liam?] Peck & girls
were here in A.M. I had W.S.C.S. meeting here in P.M. There were 15 of us.
Thurs. June 9
Nice day. Mon & I went too Decorah about 11. Large crowd in town. The Decorah
Centennial started today. So many antique things in the store windows. Went
up & watched them judged the Centennial costumes in P.M. Very large crowd
up there. (Court House steps & grounds). We got home about 4:30. Mon went
too Lodge in eve. I felt like the dickens. Coming down with a nasty cold. Ike
& A[--] moved into their new house, across from us, this P.M.
Fri. June 10
Nice day. Plenty warm. Felt bum all day. Mon worked up at Ike's with the
tractor & scraper all day hauling away dirt. Dean's went fishing &
left Linda here. They got back about 7 & bro't 30 nice fish. Cleaned
them here & left most of them in the refrigerator. Big Centennial at Decorah
today & nite & many many cars on the road.
Sat. June 11
Nice day but plenty warm. Mon finished up at Ike's about 9:30 & then
took the tractor back too Dean's. I worked in the garden until about 10.
Dean was here for dinner. He was getting his car fixed at the garage. We went
down town awhile in eve. Very few in town. All at the Centennial I guess. Last
nite of it & the cars were surely going today & tonite.
Sun. June 12
Nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & we had a nice rain. Cleared
off partly then but we got more rain with thunder, lightning & wind in eve.
Mon & I took Claude & Olive too Dorchester too the Ball game. We went
about 11:30. Took our dinner & had a picnic over there. B.O. won 8 to 3.
Rained while we were coming home. Mon & I went too Decorah in eve too the
first show. "A Chicken Every Sunday". It was funny. Rained while
we were in the Show & again after we got home & got cooler.
Mon. June 13
Not very nice in A.M. Rained off & on but wasn't so bad in P.M. Rather
cool. Dean's were here awhile in P.M. Mon helped at Arthur's in
P.M. Danny came home with him & stayed until about 10. His folks came after
him then. I tore off old paper in our room all day.
Tues. June 14
Not very nice in A.M. but quite nice in P.M. I tore off old paper in the west
room & the stair way & Mon plastered up the bad places. He finished
about 2 & went down & helped Arthur the rest of the P.M. We went down
town a little while in eve. Got a letter from Isa.
Wed. June 15
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Vin papered our room today. Mon was at
Arthur's all day. He mowed hay part of the day. Dean bro't Linda
up about 6:30 & she stayed all nite with us. The L.A.S. at Locust had their
fancy work sale & lunch tonite & Iona had too help.
Thurs. June 16
Nice day. Mon helped at Dean's all day plowing corn. Linda went home with
him. I worked in the garden in A.M. & then went too W.S.C.S. dinner. Dorothea
R. Hazel Harvey, Maxine Falck & Marjorie Darling entertained. Had a good
dinner & a good crowd. I stopped too see Mrs. Koenig on my way home. Worked
in the garden after I got home.
Fri. June 17
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed corn at Dean's in A.M. I worked in the garden.
We all went too Decorah in P.M. Mama & I got our hair fixed & Mon got
a hair cut. Mama went too the Dr. Kate R. rode home from town with us. Mon &
I went down too Dean's a few minutes after supper. Iona & Linda were
not at home. Went too the Dance at the Hall in eve. Not too big a crowd out
& everyone was tired but we had quite a good time.
Sat. June 18
Nice day & plenty warm. Mon helped hay at Arthur's all day. Lizzie
C. was here awhile in P.M. The Joan of Arc had a program & lunch for the
Fathers of the community at the M.E. church in eve. Had a good program &
lunch. Mon was too tired too go.
Sun. June 19
Nice day. Plenty warm. Clouded up late in P.M. & looked quite rainy but
no rain. Dean's bro't Linda up early in A.M. & left her &
they went fishing. They got home about 6:30. Dressed their fish here & left
them in the refrig. They got 20 nice ones. Mon took Mama too church in A.M.
He & Claude went too the Ball game here at B.O. in P.M. B.O. & Quandahl.
B.O. won 35-8. Lena & Clifford came over in P.M. & stayed for supper.

Mon. June 20
Nice hot day. Mon worked at Arthur's again today. They finished the alfalfa
early in A.M. & he came on home. I washed & ironed. Mama walked over
too Uncle Geo's in P.M. I went up too Ike's a little while in P.M.
Had quite a rain in the eve & nite. Cooled off some.
Tues. June 21
Dandy nice day. Cooler in A.M. but warmed up in P.M. Mon & I went down too
Dean's after dinner. Iona & I went up in the woods too see about the
gooseberries & raspberries. The men had too go too Decorah & get some
repairs. We stopped at Arthur's on our way home & washed the car.
Ruth had company come from Hammond just before we got there. A couple of school
ma'am's. Danny helped us wash the car. Mon went down town awhile
in eve.
Wed. June 22
Rather cloudy at times but still a nice day. Sprinkled a little early in A.M.
but not much. Rained in eve & nite & quite a lot of thunder & lightning.
Mon went too Dean's about 10. They mowed hay. He came home about 4:30
& had supper & went back & mowed until dark. Vin finished papering
here today. Zoa came & got Mama about 1:30 & bro't her back about
7. Listened to the "fight" in eve. Joe Walcott & Ezzard Charles
for world championship. Chas. won. Not too much of a fight. Not like Joe Louis.
Thurs. June 23
Not too bad a day but not too nice either. Mon painted the wood work in the
west room & some in the east. Mama went down too Aunt Mary's in P.M.
Dean & Linda were here awhile in P.M. Rained again in eve & nite. Mon
went too Lodge in eve. Bad storm about 6 P.M. & for about 1½ hours.
Thunder, lightning, wind, downpour & some hail. Did quite a lot of damage
at Decorah, Cresco & some other towns. Not much damage around here.
Fri. June 24
Not very nice day. Looked rainy all day & it did rain in P.M. late &
again in the nite. Mon painted the floor in the west room in A.M. finished up
about 1:30. He took Olive & I too Club at Violets in P.M. Quite a few out
& a swell lunch. We rode home with Florence. Mon went down town in eve too
a Base ball meeting. Put out Cecil [Sensor?] as manager & put in Melson
S.
Sat. June 25
Quite a nice day. Plenty warm. We went too Decorah about 1. Not many in town.
Dean's came up awhile in eve & then I went down town when they went
& sat in the car with Iona while they were in town. Linda was with her Grandpa.
Sun. June 26
Quite a nice day. Rather cloudy at times but didn't rain. Plenty warm.
Mon went down too Dean's & Arthur's awhile in P.M. Claude's
went with us too the ball game in P.M. Nordness & B.O. They played down
on the Waukon road. N. won 9-4. Mon & I went too Mabel in eve too the Show.
"The Hills of Home". It was good. Went too the first show so we
were home early.
Mon. June 27
Nice day. I washed & ironed & worked some in the garden. Mon worked
in the garden some too. Albert Emery came about 4:30 & they took up the
drain pipe & it was so badly broken they had too go too Prosper & get
a new one. Got it all fixed up then. He was here for supper. Mon went down town
in eve. Looked pretty stormy in eve & nite but didn't rain. Plenty
warm in the earlier part of the nite but cooled off later.
Tues. June 28
Dandy nice day. Not quite so hot. Mon went down too the farm awhile in A.M.
We went down in P.M. & Iona & I went up in the woods & picked gooseberries.
Got quite a few. Mon took care of Linda. We stopped at Arthur's a little
while on our way home. Mon went down town in eve.

Dandy nice day. Not quite so warm. Mon painted the west room again. We went
down town in eve awhile. Mama went up too Lizzie's in P.M.

Not too nice a day but not too bad. Very warm. Mon painted. Had quite a shower
at nite. Mon went too Lodge.
Fri. July 1
Very hot day. I waxed the floor in the west room & got the things moved
in there & cleaned & straightened up our room. Looked pretty stormy
in P.M. & eve.
Sat. July 2
Nice day. Plenty warm. Isa came with Millard Walton's about 10 A.M. We
went too Decorah in P.M. Got my hair fixed. Lizzie went too Decorah with us.
Went down town awhile in eve. Hot nite. We went for a ride when we came home
from town.
Sun. July 3
Nice day & plenty warm. Mon went with Arthur & Danny in A.M. up by Harmony
too look at a bull. We went down too Arthur's for dinner. Deans were there
too. Had a good dinner & a good time. Mon & I went down too Maynard
N's. a few minutes in eve.
Mon. July 4
Plenty hot day. Dean's came up about 11 & were here for dinner. Didn't
do much of anything. It was too hot. Mon was at Arthur's awhile in A.M.
& then he & I went down there after supper. Arthur fixed up a shower
bath today & we each had a bath. Hot nite.
Tues. July 5
Hot day. We washed & got part of the clothes out when it rained very hard
& looked like a very bad storm. Bro't the clothes in & then put
them out again after dinner when it cleared off. Got the ironing done in P.M.
too. Isa & I helped Olive get beans ready for canning in P.M. Hot nite.
Wed. July 6
Hot day. Mon took Isa, Mama & I too Lutheran L.A.S. at noon. Had a swell
dinner. Dorothy Emmons, Gladys Baker, Pearl Walter & Mrs. [Espeseth?] entertained.
Large crowd. Mama & Isa visited around town some in P.M. Isa & I went
up too Geo. Brown's in eve awhile. Stopped at Olive's on our way
home & helped her pick over some gooseberries. Not quite so hot tonite.
Thurs. July 7
Hot day. Rather cloudy at times. Mon & I went down too Dean's about
9 & I went up in the woods & picked raspberries. Iona & Linda came
up later. We picked until noon & had dinner & then went back & picked
until about 3:30. Got a nice lot. Mon helped Dean fix fence in A.M. & then
he mowed some hay after dinner & then took the mower over too Arthur's.
Dean helped Arthur awhile in P.M. Mama & Isa went down too Aunt Mary's
in eve. Mon went too Lodge. Mrs. Emmons was here a few minutes in eve.
Fri. July 8
Rather cloudy in A.M. Started too sprinkle about 1:30 & then it rained quite
hard for awhile. Cleared off late in P.M. & was nice though. Got much cooler
in eve. Isa went home on the noon bus. Mon went down too hay but the rain put
a stop too that. [Rhoe?] Walton was here awhile in eve. Arthur's were
here a few minutes in eve. We had picked & fixed beans for Ruth too can
so they came after them. Dean & Si N. were here later in eve awhile.
Sat. July 9
Dandy nice day but not so warm. We went too Decorah about 9. Took Arthur too
Ft. Atkinson or near there late in A.M. too look at a bull. We got home about
12:45 & had dinner & then went down too Dean's. I picked berries,
Iona was out awhile. The berries were pretty well dried up. Mon & Dean put
hay bales in the barn. Went down town awhile in eve. Cool nite.
Sun. July 10
Dandy nice day but not so warm. Dean's bro't Linda up early in A.M.
& they went down too the Dam fishing & picking berries. Mon took Mama
too church. We went too the ball game in P.M. B.O. played Mabel here at home.
Claude's went with us. B.O. won 7-4. Aunt Eunice, Vin, Eunice & the
kids were here when we got home & they stayed for supper. Dean's came
after Linda about 6:30. Didn't get many fish & only a couple of qts.

Nice day. Not too hot. I washed & ironed & worked in the garden some.
Mon helped the boys haul in baled hay all day. Ada R. was here awhile in P.M.
Went down town awhile in eve. Cool nite. Got a letter from Isa.
Tues. July 12
Dandy nice day. Warm out in the sun but not so bad. Mon helped haul in hay bales
at Arthur's. They finished early in P.M. & Mon started too mow hay
down home & something went wrong with the tractor so he had too go too Decorah
& get repairs. I went along with him. We were not gone long. Mon went down
& bro't the tractor up town & got it fixed. He kept the tractor
up here all nite. Mon went down town awhile in eve. Little son born too Pat
& Bud Haugland.
Wed. July 13
Nice in A.M. Quite warm. Clouded up in P.M. Started too rain about 4:30 &
rained quite hard at times the rest of the P.M. & most of the nite. Got
cooler after the rain. Mon worked down at the farm haying. Mama & I went
too W.S.C.S. meeting at Ruth's in P.M. with Miriam. Not too many out.
Had a nice lunch. Babe W. was here a few minutes in A.M. also Dean's a
few minutes. Mon went down town in eve. Little son born too Hans & Rosie
Breitsprecher.

Nice day. Not quite so hot. Mon was down town in A.M. & Linda came home
too dinner with him. He went down there in P.M. too hay & Linda went home
with him. I went down town in eve with Mon. Cool nite.

Dandy nice day, although quite hot out in the sun. Cool in the house. Mon was
at Dean's all day haying. They finished then. I went down too Central
in P.M. too pay our switch fees & dues. Mama went down town. Karen McCabe
was here awhile in P.M. & for supper. She came home with Mama. Mon went
down town in eve.

Nice day. Mon was at Dean's all day. They cut the grain. We went down
town in eve. Cool nite.

Nice day. Got rather warm during the day. Dean's bro't Linda up
early in A.M. & left her & they went fishing. Mon took Mama too church
in A.M. We went too Highlandville in P.M. too the Ball game. Claude's
went with us. H. beat 13-3. Dean's got back about 6:30. They cleaned their
fish & left them in the refrigerator. Rained hard in the nite. Quite a lot
of thunder & lightning.

Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Quite warm.
I washed & ironed. Mon went down too Deans early in A.M. Took their fish.
He stopped at Arthur's awhile on his way home. Went back down too Dean's
in P.M. & they shocked the grain. We went down town in eve. Cool nite.

Nice day. Mon was at Arthur's all day mowing hay. Arthur & Dean were
cutting grain there. Mon went down town awhile in eve. Cool nite.

Nice day but cool in A.M. Mon worked at Arthur's all day cutting grain.
Olive was over awhile in P.M. Went down town in eve. Went too an Ice Cream Social
on the church lawn put on by the young people of the church. Cool nite. Rained
in the nite.

Not very nice in A.M. Had quite a shower early in A.M. & then again about
12:30 it rained very hard. Cleared off & was quite nice in P.M. & nite.
We went too Decorah early in A.M. I got my hair fixed. Mon got his hair cut.
He went down town in eve. Had a letter from Isa today.

Nice day. Mon worked at Arthur's all day cutting grain. They finished
baling at Arthur's today. Mama went down town in P.M. Ada was here in
P.M. I was over at Olive's awhile in P.M. late. She got a new Kelvinator
refrigerator this P.M.

Nice day. Warmer. Mon worked at Arthur's all day. They finished cutting
grain. I went too Decorah in P.M. with Claude's. We went down town in
eve.
Sun. July 24
Nice day & plenty warm. Mon took Mama too church in A.M. & he &
Claude went too the ball game in P.M. here at B.O. Decorah against B.O. with
B.O. winning 4 to 3. Raymond, Ruby & [Carol Ann?] were here awhile in P.M.
& I was over at Olive's awhile. We went down too Raymond's as
soon as Mon got home from the ball game & from there on over too Dean's
a little while. Marion was here awhile in eve. Warm nite.
Mon. July 25
Pretty warm day again. I washed & ironed in A.M. Mama & I went up too
Zoa's in P.M. too a "rag bee". About 14 there. Sewed quite
a few rags. Had a nice lunch. Mon went down too Raymond H's too thresh.
He came home after dinner. Paul, Marie & the kids came too Claude's
about 2 P.M. & Marie & the kids came over as soon as we got home from
Zoa's. Warm nite. Rained some in the nite.
Tues. July 26
Pretty warm day again. Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was
a nice day. Mon left early in A.M. Took John D. to Protovin & Decorah. Didn't
get home until about 6. Olive, Marie & the kids were here awhile late in
P.M. Dean's were here a few minutes in eve. Mon went down town a little
while. Rained a little in the nite.
Wed. July 27
Nice day. Warm. Mon worked at Arthur's in A.M. helping put in hay bales.
He came home after dinner & bro't Danny home with him. Arthur &
Ruth went too Decorah. They came & got Danny on their way home.
Thurs. July 28
Very warm day & quite windy. We sat around most of the day. Went down too
Dean's awhile late in P.M. Mon went down town in eve awhile. Hot nite,
but it cooled off toward morning.
Fri. July 29
Nice day. Cool all day & quite windy. I went too Club at Valeda Wilbur's
in P.M. with Ruth. Not too many members out but still quite a few there with
all the visitors. Had a nice lunch. Cool nite. Stanley P. came in P.M. &
was still here when Ruth & I got back from Club. Stayed awhile after that
& then went on too Center Point.
Sat. July 30
Nice day & cool. We went down too Dean's early in A.M. Threshed there
in P.M. Ray Hale's rig. Finished about 4. Had 447 bu. of grain. Helped
Iona with the dishes & got home about 6. Changed my clothes & went right
up too the church. The W.S.C.S. had an ice cream Social & I helped. Quite
a few out even if it was cold. Stopped down town awhile on my way home. Got
home about 10:30.
Sun. July 31
Nice day. Cool. Mon took Mama too church in A.M. We went too Claude's
for dinner. Had a picnic dinner & a good one. Dean's were there too.
The men went too the ball game in P.M. B.O. & Dorchester & D. won 14-13.
Marion & Gloria Ann came for a little while late in P.M. also Dell &
Mettie. I came home about 7:30. Arthur's were here a few minutes in eve.
Had quite an electrical storm in the nite but not too much rain.

Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Cool. We all went
too Decorah in P.M. Mama went too the Dr. but he wasn't there. Marjorie
was over in eve & then I went back too Claude's with her for awhile.
Arthur's came while I was there. I went down town a minute. Claude, Leonard,
Paul & Lester B. went too New Albion today fishing. Got some but not too
many.

Nice day. I washed & ironed. Marjorie was over most of the A.M. They went
home just after dinner. Mon went down too Arthur's late in P.M. for a
little while. He went down town in eve.

Nice day. Mon was at Arthur's. He raked hay & Maynard N. baled.
Thurs. Aug. 4
Nice day. Mon was at Arthur's all day. They put up hay in A.M. Dean helped
too. Ruth came up after me about 9 & we went too Decorah a little while.
Danny stayed at home with the men. I went from Decorah home with her & helped
her get ready for threshers. Mon & I came home about 5. Went down town awhile
in eve.
Fri. Aug. 5
Nice day & plenty warm. We went too Arthur's early in A.M. & were
there until about dark. They threshed. Mrs. K. was there & helped until
about 4 & then they went home.
Sat. Aug. 6
Hot day. We went too Arthur's early in A.M. again too thresh. They finished
shortly after dinner. Mrs. K. & Iona were there too help. We came home about
3. Went down town in eve & then we took Addie Q. home about 11.
Sun. Aug. 7
Hot day. Mon took Mama & Aunt Alice too church in A.M. & then Aunt Alice
stayed for dinner with us. Too warm too do any thing in P.M. & eve. Warm
nite.
Mon. Aug. 8
Nice warm day again. I washed in A.M. Mon helped Arthur in A.M. & we took
Mama too Decorah too the Dr. in P.M. Went over too see Lillian's baby
after we got home from town. Gert Donlans & the boys were here awhile late
in P.M. Mon went down town awhile in eve.
Tues. Aug. 9
Nice day & plenty warm. Clouded up in P.M. & we had a little shower
but it cleared off afterward & was nice & warm. I ironed & did odd
jobs in A.M. Mon went too Canton in P.M. too a ball game. We went too Mabel
in eve too the Show. "Command Decision". It was good. Had a letter
from Isa. Warm nite.
Wed. Aug. 10
Warm day & rather cloudy. Had a nice shower about 11. We went too Cresco
about 11:30 too the Fair. Had dinner in Cresco & then went out too the Fair
Grounds. Sat in the Grand Stand in P.M. & watched the ball game, horse races
& free acts. They were good. Run onto Mrs. & Mr. Leon Marlow & ran
around with them until we came home. Had a good time. Got home about 12. Broke
my glasses just before we went too Cresco.
Thurs. Aug. 11
Rather cloudy in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was nice. Warm. We went
too La Crosse about 10:15. Claude & Olive went with us. Took my glasses
too the factory too get them fixed. We went too a Show in P.M. "Red Stallion
of the - - -". It was sure good. Didn't get my glasses until after
5:30 so we came right home then. Went down town awhile in eve.
Fri. Aug. 12
Dandy nice day & warm. Ruth & Danny were up awhile in P.M. Mon &
I went down too Dean's a few minutes late in P.M. Linda came home with
us & stayed all nite. Her folks went too the Decorah Fair. Si, La Verne
& the kids were going too Dean's but they saw Linda here so they stopped
here & spent the eve.
Sat. Aug. 13
Nice day & plenty warm. Dean came up after Linda about 10:30. Mon &
I went too Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed. Johnnie & Jeanne Whalen
& Kathie rode too B.O. with us from Decorah.
Sun. Aug. 14
Nice warm day. Mon took Mama too church in A.M. Arthur's bro't Danny
up in eve & left him all nite. They went too a weiner roast.
Mon. Aug. 15
Not too nice early in A.M. but cleared off about noon & was very nice. Plenty
warm. Mon took Danny home about 7:30. I washed. Mama & I went too a "rag
bee" at Hilda Reid's in P.M. Joyce H. came & got her mother
from there, about 2:30 as Arthur had, had a bad spell out at Roy [Owen's?].
Dean's were up in eve.
Tues. Aug. 16
Nice day & plenty warm. I ironed in A.M. Sprinkled a few times in P.M. but
was nice between showers. Mon & I went down too Ludvig's late in P.M.
& got some apples & plums. Went down town awhile in eve. Had quite a
shower late in eve. Arthur Smith passed away late in eve.
Wed. Aug. 17
Nice day. Olive came over in A.M. & helped me peel apples. I made 3 qts.
of apple pickles & canned apples & plums. Went down too see Genev S.
in eve. Ruth & Danny were there too. Linda got hurt today. Fell on a rock
& had too go too the Dr. & have 3 stitches taken.
Thurs. Aug. 18
Nice day. Helped Olive peel some apples for pickles early in A.M. Mon &
I went down too see Linda right after dinner awhile. She is just fine. Went
down town in eve. Stopped too see Genev a few minutes & then went on up
too the Church too practice for the funeral. Cool nite.
Fri. Aug. 19
Nice day & cool. Went too Arthur S's funeral in P.M. Mon took Mama
early & I went about 1:30. Funeral at the church at 2. Arnold's preached.
Ruth, Florence, Anita & I sang "God Will Take Care of You" &
"Come Unto Me". Very large crowd out & beautiful flowers. They
served lunch at the church afterward & I helped. Went down too Genev's
awhile in eve. Mon went too Decorah early in A.M. & got his hair cut. He
took Claude & Bert Kimball & Ludvig too Harmony in eve too a ball game.

Sat. Aug. 20
Nice day. Cool. We went too Decorah in P.M. Deans' were down & had
the large stitch taken out of Linda's forehead. We went down town in eve.
Real cool. Victor Berge died about 9:30 tonite.

Dandy nice day. Mon took Uncle Geo down too Uncle Aaron's in A.M. We went
too the ball game at B.O. in P.M. with Claude's. Nordness & B.O. &
B.O. won 8-7. Cool nite.
Mon. Aug. 22
Dandy nice day. Warmer. I washed in A.M. Mon went too Prosper. We went too Decorah
in P.M. Took Mama too the Dr. Iona & Linda went too & I went with Iona
too the Dr. too have the rest of the stitches taken out of Linda's forehead.
We had too wait such a long while. Got home about 6. Mon went down town awhile
in eve. Roscoe Wicks passed away very suddenly about 10:30 this eve.
Tues. Aug. 23
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon helped Arthur vaccinate hogs in A.M. & then
he went on over home. Brought Linda home with him too dinner. I ironed in A.M.
& canned some peaches. Went down too Dean's with Mon & Linda right
after dinner & went from there with Dean's too Locust too Victor Berge's
funeral. Iona Moran went too. Large crowd out. Linda stayed at Willson's.
Got home about 4. Went down town awhile in eve.
Wed. Aug. 24
Nice day. I ironed for Olive as she had too go up too Roscoe's in P.M.
Mon went down home awhile in A.M. Mama & I went too the Church basement
in P.M. too a "rag bee". The last one. Went up too the Advent Church
in eve too practice for Roscoe's funeral.

Dandy nice day. Went too Roscoe's funeral in P.M. Alberta, Florence &
I sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "Blessed Be the Name"
& "Eden Home". Very large crowd out. The Club had an Ice Cream
Social on the Lutheran Church lawn in eve. I went up there about 5:15 too work.
Had a good crowd out. Sold out everything.

Nice day. Canned all day. Made more apple pickles & canned tomatoes. Deans
were up & spent the eve.
Sat. Aug. 27
Nice day. We went too Decorah in P.M. John D. & Ludvig Q. went with us.
I got my hair fixed. Went down town in eve.
Sun. Aug. 28
Nice day. Somewhat cooler. Mon went down too Arthur's early in A.M. He
took Mama, Aunt Alice & Lizzie too church in A.M. We went too the ball game
here at B.O. in P.M. Claude's went with us. Highlandville & B.O. B.O.
won 13-3.
Mon. Aug. 29
Dandy nice day. We went too La Crosse about 10 A.M. Mr. & Mrs. Ed [Noekles?]
went with us. Mrs & Henry went too Dr. Smith & had their eyes tested.
I had my glasses hardened. Had a nice time & got home about 4. Mon went
down town awhile in eve. Cool nite.
Tues. Aug. 30
Nice day but cool & quite windy. I washed & ironed & canned some.
Mon helped with cement work at Ike's in P.M. We went down town awhile
in eve. Dean's bro't Linda up about 9:30 & left her all nite
while they went too a Shower Dance. She didn't care much about staying
but quieted down after while. Cool nite.
Wed. Aug. 31
Nice day. Very windy. Dean's came about 9 after Linda. I canned some in
A.M. Mon & I went down too Ludvig's in P.M. & picked a bushel
of apples. Stopped at Arthur's awhile on our way home.
Thurs. Sept. 1
35º. Nice day but plenty cold for this time of the year. Coldest morning
on record for this time of year. Mon helped Arthur cut corn today. Went down
town in eve. Cool nite.
Fri. Sept. 2
Nice day, quite a little warmer. Mama & I went up too the church too help
tie quilts. Tied 4 of them. Had a picnic dinner & a good one. Frank Schepple's
came too visit Zoa today & they came over too the church after dinner so
we got too visit with them awhile. They are sure looking good & it was good
too see them. Howard Bradley came about 3 P.M. just after we got home &
stayed for supper. ‘Pretty tight". Mon went down town in eve. He
got his glasses today. Dean, Linda & Lois G. were here a few minutes in
eve.

Nice day. We went too Decorah in P.M. awhile. Went down town in eve. Cool nite.
Rained in the nite some.
Sun. Sept. 4
Not very nice day. Dark & windy. Rained some & cool. Rained quite hard
for awhile in A.M. Cleared off some late in P.M. & wasn't so cool.
Aunt Eunice, Earl & Larry came about 10 & were here for dinner. They
left about 2.
Mon. Sept. 5
Not too nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a very nice day. Rather
cool but not too bad. Mon & I took John D. too Protovin about 10 A.M. &
stayed there for their "big dinner". They surely are good cooks.
Heard some good band music. Stayed until about 2:45. Played the corn game awhile.
John stayed over there. We stopped at Deans' awhile on our way home. Got
home about 4:30. Mon went down town in eve. Cool nite.
Tues. Sept. 6
Not very nice day. Rather damp & cloudy most of the day although the sun
did shine a little while in P.M. Cool day. Mon worked at the house almost all
day. I canned tomatoes. Made chili sauce & dill pickles. Dean & Linda
were here awhile in P.M. Went down town in eve & it rained quite hard while
we were down there & on the way home & [rained?] some during the nite.
Wed. Sept. 7
Rather damp & cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day.
Mon went down too Dean's early in A.M. & helped get some cattle in
too sell. Chas. Wernett hauled them too Decorah & they were sold at the
Sale in P.M. Mon & I took Mrs. [Noekles?] too Protovin in P.M. Took Linda
along with us. John D. came home with us. Dean's came up & got Linda
in eve. Kate R. was here awhile after we got home. Cool nite.
Thurs. Sept. 8
Dandy nice day but still a little cool. I washed & ironed. I went too Lutheran
L.A.S. for dinner. Pearl Rosendahl, Norma Masters, Rose Brown & Martha Breitsprecher
served. They had a swell dinner. Mon started putting the siding on the house
today. We went down town in eve. Cool nite.
Fri. Sept. 9
39º this morn. Cool this morning but warmed up & was a dandy nice warm
day. Mon worked at the house all day. Arthur & Danny were here awhile just
after dinner. Arthur's bro't Danny up in eve & left him while
they went too one of their parties. He stayed all nite. Mon went down town awhile
in eve. Claude went too Ames early this A.M. too play checkers.
Sat. Sept. 10
Not too nice a day & yet not bad. Mon worked at the house awhile in A.M.
We took Danny home about 10:30. Went too Decorah in P.M. Got my hair fixed.
Went down town in eve. Claude came home about 10 this eve. Rained some in the
eve. We went down too Dean's just after supper & got a couple of young
chickens.

Rained in A.M. & at times quite hard. Dark & chilly all day. Went too
Decorah too the ball game in P.M. Claude's went with us. B.O. & Nordness
played (at Luther college). B.O. won 4-3. Championship game of the season. Had
quite an electrical storm in the nite & it rained hard too.
Mon. Sept. 12
Rather cloudy & foggy early in A.M. but cleared off & was quite a nice
day. Sprinkled in eve & nite. I washed & ironed. Mon worked at the house
most of the day. Arthur & Dean were both there awhile in A.M. Mon went down
town in eve. Cool nite.
Tues. Sept. 13
Quite a nice day but windy & chilly. Mon helped Arthur awhile in A.M. &
then he helped Ludvig fill silo in P.M. Dean's bro't Linda up about
9 & left her while they went fishing. They got home about 5. Didn't
have too good luck. They left us some. Went down town awhile in eve. Cold nite.

About 35. Dandy nice day. Warmed up some. Mon helped Ludvig fill silo today.
I went too W.S.C.S. business meeting at the church basement in P.M.

Dandy nice day. Mon worked at the house awhile in A.M. & then we took Mama
too the Dr. about 10:30. He worked at the house again in P.M. I helped put the
paper on (way up high). We went down town in eve. Mama walked over too Uncle
George's in P.M.
Fri. Sept. 16
Dandy nice day. Floyd B. helped Mon in A.M. with the siding. They went too Decorah
in P.M. too a ball game. Olive & I went over too Uncle George's in
P.M. & got some paper. Dean's bro't Linda up in eve & left
her all nite. They went too Mr. & Mrs. Bob Fisher's Shower Dance.
Mon & Linda went down town awhile.
Sat. Sept. 17
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon took Linda home in A.M. We went too Decorah
awhile in P.M. Went down town in eve a little while.
Sun. Sept. 18
Dandy nice day although it was very windy in P.M. We left home about 8:40 for
Mason City too Chas. & Helen's. Took our time going out. Got there
about 11:30. Had dinner & then Chas. & Helen took us in their car out
too the airport & we watched the midget car racing for awhile & then
went on too Clear Lake. Had a ride entirely around the Lake. Stopped at the
airport coming back & watched a big plane (Mid Continent) come in &
take off again. Came back too Mason City & then Chas. drove our car around
awhile. Had a lunch & left there about 7:20. Got home about 10. Had a very
good time.
Mon. Sept. 19
Nice day but very windy. Arthur sold hog's at Harmony in A.M. & Danny
stayed with us while he was gone. Dean & Linda were here awhile just after
dinner. Dean's bro't Linda up in eve & left her all nite while
they went too a Shower Dance. Mon went down town awhile in eve. Froze some tonite.
Tues. Sept. 20
30º this morn. Our 33rd Wedding Anniversary. Dandy nice day. Not quite
as windy. I washed & ironed. Mon took Linda home in A.M. & then went
too Cresco. Arthur took his tractor over there too have it fixed. Mon &
Danny went & got him. Mon got home about 11:30. He went down too Dean's
in P.M. & helped shock beans. We went too Mabel in eve too the Show Betty
Grable in "The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend". It was surely
funny. Got home about 9:30.

Nice day. Rather windy. We went too Cresco in P.M. John D., Arthur & Danny
went along & Arthur bro't his tractor home. We got home about 4. Mon
went down town awhile in eve. Frank Richards was buried at B.O. this P.M.
Thurs. Sept. 22
Nice day but quite windy. Floyd B. helped Mon put on siding all day. They finished
the west side. Went too W.S.C.S. Helped in the kitchen. Aunt Alice, Joyce H.,
Muriel T., Violet U. entertained. Very large crowd. Took in over $70. The men
& Mama came up for dinner. Went down town awhile in eve.
Fri. Sept. 23
Dandy nice day. Mon started siding the east side, along the kitchen & dining
room. He took me down too Whitney's & Mama too Arthur's after
dinner & came after us about 4:45. I went too Decorah with Brayton &
Inez. We bought a large gas stove for the Church kitchen at Thermo Gas. $100
installed. They took me over too Ruth's on our way home. Mon went down
town awhile in eve. Had a letter from Isa.

Dandy nice day. Mon worked at the east side of the house (kitchen & d.r.)
in A.M. & we went too Decorah in P.M. Uncle Aaron went with us & he
& Ole A. came home with us. I got my hair fixed. Went down town awhile in
eve.
Sun. Sept. 25
Dandy nice day. Arthur's & Dean's were here for dinner &
spent most of P.M. Had a good time. Mrs. Emmons was here awhile in P.M. One
tank of gas went dry.
Mon. Sept. 26
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & rained some late in P.M. Mon
went down too Arthur's about 6 A.M. & they went too Des Moines with
the pick up & got a [grain?] drill. He got home again about 7 so they didn't
lose any time. I went up too the church basement about 9 & was there all
day except for time out too come home for a lunch at noon. Inez & Brayton
were there in A.M. too but Brayton couldn't come back in P.M. The men
came up from the Therm O Gas & installed the stove so Inez & I cleaned
it up & cleaned up the kitchen. Got home about 5. Mon went down town awhile
in eve.
Tues. Sept. 27
Quite a nice day but windy & cool. Mon went down too Arthur's early
in A.M. & helped him awhile & then worked on the house the rest of the
day. The gas tank went dry early this A.M. so [Mac.?] came up & had too
put in 2 new tanks. Can't imagine where the one tank of gas went. We went
down town awhile in eve.
Wed. Sept. 28
Nice day but windy. I washed in A.M. Mon worked at the house all day. Dean came
just as we were eating dinner so he ate with us & then helped Mon in P.M.
They tore the east porch off. Mon took Mama, Olive & I down too Elsie's
about 1:45 & then came after us about 4:45. She had some of the ladies in
too see Edna, who is here visiting. Had a nice time & a nice lunch. Got
colder in eve & was a cold nite. Mon put "dope" in the car in
eve & we went down too Arthur's too get it to circulating. Mon helped
Arthur get some pullets in the hen house. Mon went too Prosper in A.M. &
got some shingles for the south porch.
Thurs. Sept. 29
18º Hard frost. Nice day. Warmed up a bit. Mon went down too Dean's
in A.M. & helped him sort out hogs. They sold the old sows. Leonard Dow
hauled them too Decorah. I ironed in A.M. & washed windows & did odd
jobs outside in P.M. Mon worked at the south porch, started too shingle it.
Dean's were here a few minutes late in P.M. We went down town awhile in
eve. Cool nite. The 13 sows weighed 3780 lbs. at $17.60 per cwt. & bro't
$665.28.
Fri. Sept. 30
24º this morn. Quite frosty. Dandy nice day. Warmed up a lot. Mon worked
at the house until late in the P.M. & then he took John D. out hunting squirrels
but they didn't get any. I went too Club at Margaret Ward's at Cresco
with Dorothea Reid. Quite a crowd out. Had a nice lunch. Got home about 5. Went
down too Dean's awhile in eve. They got a new Kelvinator refrigerator
& a new Monarch combination gas & wood stove. They traded in their other
stoves. They are surely nice.

Nice day only rather windy. Mon worked at the house in A.M. & we went too
Decorah in P.M. Mama went along also John D. Mama got a new hat & a number
of articles. We went down town awhile in eve.

Very nice most of the day but it clouded up late in P.M. Quite warm. Mon took
Mama too church in A.M. She went down too Aunt Mary's in P.M. & Mon
went down too watch them play horse shoes. Arthur's were here awhile in
P.M. Mon & I went for a little ride late in P.M. too look at porches. Went
too Walt Barth's & Joe Manuels.

but was nice in P.M. Mon was at Dean's all day. They picked corn. We went
down town awhile in eve.
Tues. Oct. 4
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon worked at the house in A.M. Floyd
B. came at noon too help. We went up too Walt Barth's too look at their
porch again. Arthur & Danny came up in P.M. & Mon & Arthur went
too Prosper & got lumber, cement, sand etc. Danny stayed here. Mama went
up too Mrs. Koenigs in P.M. Mon went down town awhile in eve.
Wed. Oct. 5
Dandy nice day. Floyd B. helped Mon all day at the house. Dean's came
along about 9:15 & left Linda & they went up too Si's. They got
back just before dinner so were here for dinner. They left as soon as the dishes
were done. Mama went over too Uncle Geo's in P.M. We went down town awhile
in eve. Had a letter from Isa. World Series ball games started today. Yankees
& Dodgers. Yank's won 1 to 0.
Thurs. Oct. 6
Rather misty & damp early in A.M. but cleared off & was quite a nice
day. Mon worked at the house. We went down town in eve. Total eclipse of the
moon which was visible here. Ball game Dodgers 1-0.
Fri. Oct. 7
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Floyd B. helped Mon all day. I went too Marlyn K's
in P.M. with Florence & Phyliss E. too the W.S.C.S. [business?] & worship
meeting. Not too many out. Went too the B.O. school program at the Hall in eve.
It was very good. Large crowd out. Got home about 10:30. Yanks won 4-3.
Sat. Oct. 8
Nice early in A.M. but clouded up about noon & rained some. Cleared off
later in P.M. Warm. Floyd B. helped Mon today again. They finished putting the
siding on the house. I went too Decorah just after dinner with Claude's.
Got my hair fixed. We went down too Dean's a few minutes early in A.M.
Went down town in eve. Yanks won 6-4.
Sun. Oct. 9
Dandy nice day. Mon & I went over too John Schimming's early in A.M.
& got 3 kittens. Took 2 down too Dean's & kept 1 here. Mon took
Mama too church in A.M. Yanks won the ball series today 10-6. Mon has quite
a cold.
Mon. Oct. 10
Terrible day. Rainy in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. but a regular hurricane
all day. Did lots of damage around the country. Dean was here for dinner &
Mon took him home in P.M. He is having his car fixed at Roy's. Mon feels
about the same today. Arthur's bro't Danny up about 1 A.M. &
then Ruth went on too the Hospital. The wind blew most of the roof off the horse
barn down home today.
Tues. Oct. 11
Very nice in A.M. but clouded up some in P.M. & was rather damp. Got cooler
in P.M. too. I washed in A.M. Mon took Danny down too the farm with him awhile
in A.M. then they came back here. Dean came up with the tractor & wagon
& they loaded up a bunch of boards & things for him too take home. They
went up too Prosper too order some roofing & went on over too Si's
a minute. Mon went down too the farm in P.M. Inez W. & Florence were here
in P.M. & we planned the hostesses for next year's W.S.C.S. Arthur
came between 3 & 4 & said they had a new boy born a little after 1 P.M.
7 lbs. 8 oz. Both mother & baby are fine. Mon went down town awhile in eve.
Baby's name is William Boyd.

Dandy nice day. Mon was at the farm all day. Mon, Danny & I went down too
Dean's a few minutes after supper. Bro't Dean back up town to get
his car. Danny fussed most of the night with a cold. Ada R. was here awhile
in P.M. I dug the glad [t---?] today.
Thurs. Oct. 13
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon worked at the farm in A.M. & then we went
too Decorah in P.M. Took Mama too the Dr. Left Danny at Krumm's while
we were down town. Went down too see Ruth a minute. She looks fine. Uncle Geo.
was over awhile in A.M. also Aunt Mary was here awhile.
Fri. Oct. 14
Dandy nice day. Mon worked at the farm all day. Arthur was here a little while
at noon. Ruth left the Hospital this noon & went too her folks.
Sat. Oct. 15
Dandy nice day. Mon worked at the farm in A.M. He came home about 1 & bro't
Linda. Arthur was here awhile at noon. Had quite a fire here in the pasture
just after Mon got home. Looked pretty bad for a while. Quite a few men came
& helped put it out. Dean's went too Decorah in P.M. Sold some young
roosters. Mon went down town in P.M. & again in eve. Linda & Danny had
fun but they scrapped some too. Sold 28 young roosters & they weighed 137
lbs. @ .18 per lb. & bro't 24.66. Minnie Bucknell died this A.M.
Sun. Oct. 16
Dandy nice day. Mon took Mama to church in A.M. He & Danny went down too
Arthur's a little while early in A.M. Mon, Danny & I went for a ride
late in P.M. Danny went to sleep on the way home & didn't wake up
until morning.

Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon helped Arthur stack corn fodder.
Mon, Dean & Arthur were here for dinner. Mon went down town awhile in eve.
Mon started working for Roy & "Bert" tonite. Staying at the
station from 5 to 6 P.M. while they go home for supper.
Tues. Oct. 18
Dandy nice day. Mon helped shock corn at Arthur's today & the 3 men
were here for dinner again. They finished up tonite. Mon went down town in eve.
Minnie Bucknell was buried this P.M. at Decorah.

Dandy nice day. Very warm. Mon was at Dean's picking corn. Danny was sick
today. I held him almost all day. Arthur was here 3 times during the day &
eve. Mon went down town in eve.
Thurs. Oct. 20
Dandy nice warm day. Clouded up some in P.M. but was plenty warm. Mon was at
Dean's picking corn. Arthur & Ruth came after Danny this P.M. about
4. Ruth came home from her folks this P.M. She & baby are just fine. Mama
went up too Mrs. Koenigs in P.M. Gert Donlan & boys were here awhile in
P.M. We went down town in eve.
Fri. Oct. 21
Not very nice day. Sprinkled some in A.M. Got colder in P.M. & rained quite
hard for a little while. Got much colder. Mon helped pick corn at Dean's
until it rained in P.M. Mon & I went down too Arthur's awhile in eve
too see the new baby. He is very nice.
Sat. Oct. 22
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. & then we went too Decorah
in P.M. Dean's went with us. Their car was down town getting fixed so
they bro't it home. Got my hair fixed. Had supper early & went down
town. The Joan of Arc had a food sale at Sheley's store. Took in around
38 or 39 dollars. Had a letter from Isa today.

Dandy nice day. Mon took Mama too Church in A.M. Olive was over awhile in P.M.
Mon, Mama & I went down too Arthur's about 4 & stayed until about
5.

Quite a nice day but cooler. Mon was at Arthur's picking corn today. I
washed & ironed. He went down town a few minutes in eve. Arthur took a hog
down town this A.M. for us too be butchered for us.
Tues. Oct. 25
Quite a nice day but windy & chilly. Mon picked corn at Arthur's.
Uncle Geo was here awhile in P.M. I went too Prosper in eve with Brayton's
too their bazaar & lunch. They had lovely things & they went good. Had
a nice lunch. Got home about 10:30. Cold nite.

Nice day. Mon picked corn at Arthur's today. Went down town awhile in
eve.
Thurs. Oct. 27
Nice day. Mon picked corn at Arthur's in A.M. finished up there in A.M.
& went too Dean's in P.M. but it was so windy & dry that they
didn't pick corn. Worked at the barn roof. Went down town in eve. Olive
& I went over too Genevra's awhile.
Fri. Oct. 28
Beautiful day. So warm. We got up about 5:30 & Mon left about 6:30 too go
too Deans too pick corn but they had a flat tire on the tractor so Arthur had
too take it too Decorah too be fixed so they finished up the barn roof. I went
too Club in P.M. with Miriam at Luella's. Not too large a crowd out. Had
a good lunch. Fern was here awhile before Club. Mon bro't the meat home
tonite so we worked with that after supper. Got the lard all ground.

He came home after dinner & we went too Decorah awhile. Went down town in

picked corn at Dean's. I washed & ironed. Mon went down town in eve.

Quite a nice day. Mon went down too Dean's early in A.M. too pick corn
but it was too dry so he came home & brought Linda with him. She spent the
day & night with us. Dean's went too a Shower Dance in eve for Mr.
& Mrs. Dale Barth. We went too Prosper in P.M. & over too Uncle Geo's
& got some pop corn. Mon went down town a few minutes in eve.

Rather dark, cold, windy day. Dean's came up in A.M. & got Linda.
I went too Lutheran L.A.S. for dinner. Had a good dinner & good crowd. Went
down town a few minutes in eve.

Dandy nice day. Mon & I worked outside most of the A.M. cleaning up around.
We went down too Arthur's right after dinner for awhile. I helped Ruth
a little. We went on over too Dean's a few minutes too. I went up too
Aunt Alice's & too Ada's awhile after we got home. Went down
town in eve.
Fri. Nov. 4
Quite a nice day. Mon went down too Dean's too pick corn. He & Linda
had too come up town just after dinner & I went back with them. Didn't
have very good luck picking, too dry & they broke the machine so we came
home about 4. Dean bro't Linda up in eve & she stayed with us over
nite. They went too Howard Vine's shower dance.
Sat. Nov. 5
Dandy nice day. Mon took Linda home early in A.M. & worked at the corn picking
awhile. He came home about 10:45 & we hurried & got ready & went
too Decorah. Mon got a hair cut & I had my hair fixed & then we left
Decorah at 1:40 & went too Cedar Rapids. Got there about 4. Stanley's,
Warren's & Sid's came shortly afterward & we all spent the
nite at the Roosevelt Hotel. We all went out too dinner & then came back
too the Hotel & spent the eve in Stanley's room. Had a big chat. Got
too bed some after 12. Had a nice room but not as swell as the rest of them.
Sun. Nov. 6
Beautiful day. We all had breakfast at the Hotel & then went & ordered
flowers & then all went out too Center Point too Uncle Chas. & Aunt
Etta's. Chas. Helen & Florence Yager met us there. We stayed there
until about 12 & then took Uncle Charlies back too Cedar Rapids too dinner
too celebrate their 50th Wedding anniversary. Had a good dinner & good visit.
We left C.R. about 3:40. Stopped a few minutes in Center Point & then on
home. Got home about 7:30. Had a swell trip. Frances Barth & Joseph Nelson
were married this P.M. at Locust.
Mon. Nov. 7
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon was at Dean's all day. He went
down town a little while in eve.
Tues. Nov. 8
Dandy nice day. We went down too Dean's early in A.M. & picked up
corn after the picker. Iona & Linda were out part of the time. We stopped
at Arthur's a minute on our way home. Went down town a minute in eve.
Wed. Nov. 9
Dandy nice day. Were at Dean's all day picking up corn again. Linda &
Iona were out almost all the time. Went down town in eve.
Thurs. Nov. 10
Dandy nice day. We went down too Dean's in A.M. Mon & Dean picked
up corn. Brayton Whitney's were down & got the old hens. Iona, Linda
& I went out too the corn field after they were there (90 old hens &
got $90). We worked until 11:30 & then came home. Got ready & took Mama
too Decorah. She got her hair fixed & went too the Dr. I got a new dress.

Not too nice a day. Rather damp all day & nite. We went down too Deans about
11:30 & picked up corn the rest of the day. Arthur came up after me in eve
& I went down & stayed with the boys while they went too a party at
Joyce H's. Billy was very good. Arthur bro't me home about 1.
Sat. Nov. 12
Not very nice day. Rained [some?] in A.M. & was damp all day. Rained very
hard for awhile in P.M. while we were in Decorah. Wind got around into the north
late in P.M. & it got colder. Wind blew quite hard. We went too Decorah
about 9:40 & I got a permanent. Got home about 2:30. Went down town awhile
in eve.
Sun. Nov. 13
Quite nice in A.M. & warm but clouded up in P.M. & the wind blew quite
hard & it got colder. Mon took Mama too church in A.M. Aunt Alice was here
awhile in P.M. Isa, Lester, Harlan & his family came about 4 P.M. had supper
& then Claude's came over & Dean's came up. We got too bed
some after 10. Harlan & family stayed here all nite & Lester & Isa
stayed at Olives.
Mon. Nov. 14
Rather a cloudy, windy cool day. The folks left about 9:30 for home again. Olive
was over awhile in A.M. & Dean & Linda. Harlan has a nice family of
4 little ones. Pretty good kids.
Tues. Nov. 15
Not very nice day. Rather dark & chilly although the sun did shine some.
Mon went down too the farm a few minutes in A.M. I went up too the church &
worked awhile in P.M. & also went over too Olive's awhile. We went
down too Dean's after supper & got Linda & went on over too Arthur's
& spent the eve. Linda came home with us & spent the nite. Dean's
went too Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Nelson's Shower Dance (Frances Barth) at
Matters. Snowed some in the nite.
Wed. Nov. 16
Not very nice day. Dark, cloudy & cool again. It snowed some in A.M. but
not much & by noon the snow was all gone. Dean's came after Linda
about 9:30. They went over too [Leo?] Willson's too help shred. Dean left
Iona & Linda here when they went home & then he came after them after
chores. Got the turkey, this A.M., I'm too roast for tomorrow nite &
Iona made the dressing for me. Went down town a few minutes in P.M.
Thurs. Nov. 17
Not very nice day. Dark & cool. Got the turkey in too bake about 6:45 A.M.
& it was done about 1 but I left it in the oven until about 4. Mon took
me up too the church about 1:15 & I worked there until about 3:30. We came
home & I made the gravy & finished up things here & got ready &
went back too the church about 4:15. Had our annual dinner & bazaar. Started
serving at 5 & served until after 8. Had 9 turkeys (& they were big
ones) & that was just enough. Had a big crowd. Had a good dinner too. I
helped the Sec. & Treas. during the bazaar. Had nice things & they went
well. Took in around $600 altogether. Got home about 11:30.
Fri. Nov. 18
A little better day, but a cool south wind. I washed & ironed. Mon took
John D. too Protovin about 9 A.M. & they didn't get back until 6:15.
Had our first dance of the season at the Hall tonite. Not too many out but we
had a good time. The Skiam boys played. Got home about 1.
Sat. Nov. 19
Quite a nice day. We went too Decorah awhile in P.M. Geo. Brown rode home from
Decorah with us. Didn't even go down town in eve. Went too bed early.
Sun. Nov. 20
Rather nice in A.M. but started too snow about 12 & kept it up until the
ground was white. Got colder late in P.M. & the wind blew. Mon took Mama
too church in A.M. Dean, Iona & Linda were here awhile in P.M.
Mon. Nov. 21
Windy, cold day. Did odd jobs all day. Dean bro't us a pheasant late in
P.M. I went over too Olive's a little while in P.M.
Tues. Nov. 22
Windy day & warmer. Wind in the south. I washed & ironed & washed
some windows. Mon put on one storm window & put the storm windows in the
doors. Bill Leonhart bro't us a coon, just before dinner. I cleaned that
in P.M.
Wed. Nov. 23
Not too bad a day. I cleaned up the house & did quite a few things. We went
down too Dean's after supper awhile. Stopped at the store awhile on our
way home. Started too snow about 8:30 & sure did snow. About 2 or 3 inches
of snow fell.
Thurs. Nov. 24
Not very nice day. Dark & dreary looking day. Rained & snowed some early
in A.M. but quit before noon. Claude, Olive & Marion were here for dinner
& Claude & Olive spent the P.M. Leonard came about 4 & had lunch
with us. Mon & Claude went down town about 3:30. Mon didn't come back
until after 8.
Fri. Nov. 25
Not too nice in A.M. but was real nice in P.M. The sun shone & it thawed
quite a little Dean was here for dinner. We went down too Arthur's awhile
in eve. Cold, beautiful nite, but clouded up toward morning & the wind got
into the south & blew quite hard so it warmed up.
Sat. Nov. 26
Not too bad a day but not too nice either. Warmed up some. Was quite sloppy.
We went too Decorah in P.M. John D., Ludvig Q. & Miss [Webke?] rode down
with us but only John rode back. Went down town awhile in eve. We got our smoked
meat today.
Sun. Nov. 27
Quite a nice day. Sun shone all day. Mon took Mama too church in A.M. I went
over too Olive's awhile in P.M. Claude went too Des Moines this P.M. on
Farm Bureau business.
Mon. Nov. 28
Very nice early in A.M. & then it clouded up & rained quite a little
about 10. Cleared off & was a grand day. Nice & warm. I washed. Washed
windows & storm windows after dinner & Mon put some on. Arthur &
Ruth bro't the boys up here in P.M. & left them while they went too
Decorah. They got back about 4. Mon & Danny went too Prosper & Mabel
in P.M. Olive & Aunt Alice were here awhile. Dean, Iona & Linda were
here a few minutes late in P.M. Mon went down town awhile in eve. Farewell party
for Merlin McCabe's in eve at the Hall but we didn't get a bid.
Tues. Nov. 29
Beautiful day. I ironed in A.M. Mon did odd jobs & then Arthur & Danny
came about 10 & they went too Mabel & got us a load of coal. They got
back here about 11:30 but wouldn't stay for dinner. Mon went down home
in P.M. & bro't a load of wood back with the tractor & wagon.
We went down town awhile in eve. Claude got home tonite.
Wed. Nov. 30
Dandy nice day. Mama went too W.C.T.U. meeting at Arnold's in P.M. &
Arthur came up & got me about 1:30 & I went down there. Ruth helped
me fix a dress & then I helped her bring in clothes & I ironed some
things for her. Went down town in eve. Went too a meeting at Rev. Arnold's
for awhile. Snowed about 3 inches in the nite.
Thurs. Dec. 1
Quite a nice day. Thawed quite a little. Mon & I went too Decorah in P.M.
I got my hair fixed & Mon got a hair cut. We went down town in eve awhile.
Fri. Dec. 2
Quite a nice day. Mon went too Prosper in A.M. a little while. Arthur bro't
Ruth & the boys up here at noon & then he went on too a Sale. Mon took
us & Olive too Club at Anita's. Large crowd out & we had a swell
lunch. Election of officers. Maxine Falk Pres. Gloria Whitney Sec. & Audry
L. Treas. We took Ruth & the boys home. Got home about 5. Went too the dance
at the Hall in eve. Quite a large crowd out. Skiam boys played. Had a good time.
Got home about 1.

Quite a nice day. We went too Decorah awhile in P.M. John D. went along too.

Quite a nice day. Mon took Mama too church in A.M. We were home alone all day
& eve.

Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean was here a few minutes in A.M. &
Uncle Geo was here awhile in P.M. Mama went up too Mrs. Koenigs awhile in P.M.
Went down town in eve. I went over too Genev's awhile.
Tues. Dec. 6
Quite a nice day but not like yesterday. Rather cloudy. Mon started working
at the tavern this morn. Ed's have sold out & John has quit so Mon
has too go down & open up in the morn & stay until Ed comes. The new
man won't take over until about the first of Jan. Mama went down too [Jimmie?]
W's in P.M. I went up too Zoa's too choir practice. We went down
too Dean's a minute in eve. Iona's birthday. They were having company
so we didn't stay long. Snowed some in the nite.
Wed. Dec. 7
Not too bad a day but rather blustery at times. I went over too Olive's
awhile in P.M. & too Aunt Alice's in A.M. Mama went down too Aunt
Mary's in P.M. Mon didn't go down town in eve. Got much colder in
the nite.
Thurs. Dec. 8
About zero this morn. Nice day but cold. We took Mama too the Dr. in P.M. Marion
rode too Decorah with us. Went down town awhile in eve. Had a letter from Isa.
We bought a 23½ lb. turkey down town today.
Fri. Dec. 9
Warmer today but snowed off & on all day & the wind blew quite a little
in P.M. but quit about dark. Quite a lot of excitement late in P.M. & eve
here. Dave Cassel left home in P.M. late without telling Lizzie & they had
quite a few men out looking for him. Earl Wernett found him beside the road
over near their place & took him home too supper & then bro't
him home in eve. Quite a lot of anxiety felt on account of the storm, but he
was O.K. Mon was out helping hunt for him.
Sat. Dec. 10
Not too nice a day. Rather dark & dreary but not too cold although the snow
& ice froze some on the pavement. Rained very hard in the nite & took
most of the snow & ice away. We didn't go too Decorah today. Dean's
came up in eve & Iona made the dressing for the turkey & we got it stuffed.
I went down town with them when they went home. Didn't stay down there
long. Mon helped Ed in the eve.
Sun. Dec. 11
Rained off & on in A.M. & then from about 11:30 until after 12 it just
poured down most of the time. Cleared off in P.M. & was just grand. Nice
& warm. Up above 60. The wind was in the S. & blew quite hard all day.
In eve it got around more W. & N. & it sure did blow then. Mon had too
work at the tavern until about 12:30. Dean's, Arthur's & Claude
& Olive were here for dinner. We had our turkey. Celebrating Iona's
& Danny's birthdays. Iona made a lovely angel food. Had a good time.
Beautiful rainbow in the north in P.M. One gas tank went dry today.
Mon. Dec. 12
10º above this morn. Nice bright day but windy & cold. Didn't
warm up much all day. I went up too Zoa's awhile in P.M. Mama went over
too Aunt Alice's in P.M. Mon didn't go down town in eve. Olive was
over a little while late in P.M. They bro't Grandma Wicks up too Claude's
late this P.M. too stay awhile.
Tues. Dec. 13
Zero this morn. Nice day but cold. I washed & ironed. We went down town
a few minutes in eve.
Wed. Dec. 14
Danny's 3rd Birthday. Dandy nice day but cold. Mama & I went too the
W.S.C.S. meeting at Elsie's in P.M. with Florence. Had a little Xmas playlet
that I was in & then a short business meeting, a game & then the exchange
of Xmas gifts. I got a nice doily from Genev. Had a swell picnic lunch. We got
home about 5. Mon & I went down too Arthur's in eve. Had some of Danny's
birthday cake & we took ice cream. Got home about 9:30. Cold nite.
Thurs. Dec. 15
Not too bad a day. Did a little of everything. Went too Zoa's tonite too
practice. Mon had too work at the tavern tonite as well as A.M. Florence &
Albert bro't me home.
Fri. Dec. 16
Nice day. Warmer but quite a strong wind from the south. Mon & I went too
Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed. We went too the Dance in eve. Not many
out but had a good time. Got home about 1. Had a letter from Isa.
Sat. Dec. 17
Dandy nice day. Claude & Olive went too Decorah in P.M. & left Grandma
Wicks with us while they were gone. Went down town a little while in eve.
Sun. Dec. 18
Not very nice day but not too bad. Not cold but dark. Mama walked too church
as Mon had to be at the tavern this A.M. Arthur & Ruth bro't the boys
up here about 1:15 & left them. Ruth took Arthur home & then she went
on too Decorah too practice for the Messiah. She stayed down & played in
the Messiah in eve. Had a good time with the boys. We took them home a little
after 7 & it wasn't long before they were both asleep. We came home
about 9.
Mon. Dec. 19
Foggy damp day. Did a little of everything & not much of anything. Dean's
bro't Linda up in P.M. & left her while they went too Harmony too
the dentist. We put up the Xmas tree, with Linda's help. The dentist wasn't
there so the kids had their trip for nothing. Mon & I went down town a while
in eve. It rained in eve. Quite warm.
Tues. Dec. 20
Quite a warm day but dark & dreary. Dean's bro't Linda up in
P.M. & they went too Harmony again. This time the dentist was there so they
had some work done. We went down town in eve. I went over too Genev's
awhile. Mon had too work at the tavern so he didn't get home until about
10:30. Got colder late in P.M. & the wind blew quite a little.
Wed. Dec. 21
Not a very nice day but not cold. Did a little of everything. Didn't go
down town in eve. Got colder in the nite & snowed.
Thurs. Dec. 22
Snowed some & the wind blew & it was colder. Regular blizzard most of
A.M. but not too much snow too pile. Snow shone quite a little. We took Mama
too the Dr. in P.M. Went too practice at Zoa's in eve. Cold nite. Mon
bought me a new Speed Queen washing machine this P.M. & they bro't
it up about dark. Its a beauty.
Fri. Dec. 23
14º below. Warmed up some during the day & snowed. Some times quite
hard. Mon & I went too Decorah in P.M. & finished our Xmas shopping.
I went too the Xmas program at the Lutheran Church in eve. Large crowd out &
a good program.
Sat. Dec. 24
10º below. Quite a nice day. Warmed up too 10 above. I made candy most
of the day. Dean's were up in P.M. They bro't our gifts. Gave me
cologne & bath powder & Dad a cigarette lighter. Went too the Xmas tree
& program at the M.E. Church in eve. Rode home with Howard & Fern. Mon
came later.

Not too nice a day & not too bad. Sun shone some. It wasn't too cold.
Dean, Iona & Linda were here for dinner. Got nice Xmas gifts. Marvin came
home tonite for a furlough.
Mon. Dec. 26
Dandy nice day. I washed. Arthur & Danny were up awhile in P.M. Bro't
their gifts for us & got theirs. I got ear rings too match my pearls &
a slip & Dad got a cigarette lighter & we got a picture of Danny.
Tues. Dec. 27
Quite a nice day but not too much sun shine. I went up too Ada's a few
minutes in A.M. & up too Lizzie's in P.M. Ironed in A.M. Went down
town awhile in eve. Dean's & Marvin were here a few minutes about
noon.
Wed. Dec. 28
Dandy nice day. Very warm. Mon worked all day at the tavern. We went down too
Dean's for supper. Arthur's & Marvin were there too. Had a swell
supper & a good time. Got home about 10.
Thurs. Dec. 29
Dandy nice day. Very warm. Mama went up too Lizzie's in P.M. Went down
town awhile in eve.
Fri. Dec. 30
Quite a nice warm day. Thawed a lot. Mon went too Decorah in P.M. I went too
Club at Martha Breitsprechers in P.M. with Dorothea R. Quite a few out. Had
our Xmas party. I got a pretty plaque. Mama went up too Mrs. Koenig's
in P.M. We went too the Dance in eve. Large crowd out. Joe Moran's &
us got supper. Rained some in the nite. Dave Cassel passed away about 5 A.M.
Sat. Dec. 31
Cloudy misty dreary day but not cold. I went up too Lizzie's awhile in
P.M. Bernice was there also Ella Thayer. We went down town a little while in
eve. Clate Reed passed away this P.M.
