Tues. Jan. 1
Dandy nice day. Warmed up again. Dean went & got Arthur, Ruth & Mama
about 10. Claudes came over for dinner too. We had a good time.
Wed. Jan. 2
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed. The men picked 2 loads of
corn. Dean went over too Iona's in eve.
Thurs. Jan. 3
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Mon & Dean hauled in hay & fodder
& wood in A.M. & went too Decorah in P.M. I went too Frank Perry's
Sale with Roy, Bernice & Maxine. The L.A.S. served lunch. Quite a crowd
out & we sold a lot of food. Arthur rode home from the Sale with us. Mon
went up town in eve. The men got our cupboard units in Decorah that I had ordered
from Sears Roebuck.
Fri. Jan. 4
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. The men made up one unit of
our cupboards in P.M. Quite a lot of thunder & lightning this P.M.
Sat. Jan. 5
Very nasty day. Had quite a lot of rain. In fact it rained very hard a good
share of the day. We went too Decorah about 11. I got my hair fixed. Large crowd
in town. We went up town in eve too in the rain. It quit raining about 9:30
& got much colder. Lots of water in the creeks & river. Very high water
in Decorah late in the nite. Addie Q. & Jimmie W. rode home from B.O. with
us & also up too B.O. Had a letter from Bea Price.
Sun. Jan. 6
Very nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & was dark. Dean took me too church
in A.M. & then he went on over too Iona's & bro't her back
with him. She was here for dinner. Edna & Clyde were here a few minutes
after dinner. Dean & Iona went over too see Maxine & the baby a few
minutes & then back too Young's. Dean stayed over there for supper
& in eve. Arthur & Ruth, Kenneth, Emily & Mary Ann Krumm were here
in P.M. Ken just got back from the Service & came up home yesterday.
Mon. Jan. 7
Rather dark dreary day. The men were out on the telephone lines in A.M. &
picked corn in P.M. Had a letter from Isa.
Tues. Jan. 8
Not very nice day again. Dark & dreary. The men finished getting out the
corn in A.M. & hauled in feed & cleaned the hen house. Dean went too
a shower at the Community Building in eve. Mon & I went over too Howard's
in eve. Mon went over to Mabel in P.M. & Dean went too B.O.
Wed. Jan. 9
Another dark, dreary day. We went too Decorah about 10:30. Arthur & Ruth
went with us. We went from Decorah too Cresco about 1 P.M. Arthur got his priority
for a tractor so we went out there too see about getting one. He left his papers
there & expects too get one next month. Ruth & I went up too the Hospital
at Cresco too see Bernard Nash who is there from the effects of being gored
by his bull a couple of weeks ago.
Thurs. Jan. 10
Dandy nice day. Roy & Ed took Bernice & I too L.A.S. at the church.
Elsie S. & Ella R. entertained. Large crowd out & we had a dandy good
dinner. Election of officers in P.M. Mon & Dean came & got us in P.M.
We went up town in eve. Mon went too Lodge. I went up too the school house too
a P.T.A. meeting & Dean went over too Iona's awhile. Cold nite.
Fri. Jan. 11
Not very nice day. Didn't do too much. Clyde & Edna were here a minute
in eve.
Sat. Jan. 12
Not very nice early in A.M. Spit snow & was cold but cleared off & was
a nice bright day even if it was cold. Mon, Marion, Mama & I went too Decorah
about 10. Came home early & came by Young's & bro't Iona
home with us. Mon took her & Dean over too Ed Knoke's about 5:15.
Clyde & Edna were married at 6 P.M. there at home & Dean & Iona
stood up with them. They went too Matter's in eve. Mama came home too
supper with us & we went up town in eve. Came home rather early. Cold nite.
Mon was put in as director of the telephone lines today.
Sun. Jan. 13
Quite a nice day. Dean took me too church in A.M. He went over too Iona's
awhile in P.M. Ruby & Walt R. & Emma & Rick Torgeson were here &
spent the eve.
Mon. Jan. 14
Dandy nice day but cold. Mon & Dean took Bernice & Maxine up too the
church about 10:30. There was a teachers meeting in B.O. & the L.A.S. served
dinner too 26 of them. Had a nice dinner. Dean went too a dance in B.O. in eve.
Arthur & Ruth were here & spent the eve while Ken & Emily were at
Albertson's. Ken & Emily stopped a minute on their way home. Mon went
with Elder Jerviss & Mr. Stortz too see about telephone lines in A.M.
Tues. Jan. 15
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went too Mabel in P.M.
Wed. Jan. 16
Not quite such a nice day. Dean went out on the telephone line in P.M. awhile.
Martin Abrahamson was here awhile in P.M.
Thurs. Jan. 17
Nice day. Mon, Dean & I went too Decorah about 10 A.M. I got a permanent
& Mon & Dean each got a hair cut. Martin A. came over here in A.M. too
cut wood. We went over & got Iona in eve & then went too Matters too
a shower dance on Clyde & Edna. Every one seemed too have a good time &
there was a good sized crowd out. Got home about 2. I sold 26 pullets today.
They weighed 84 lbs. @ .16¢ per lb. & bro't 13.44.
Fri. Jan. 18
Nice day. Martin cut wood all day. Mon went too B.O. & Mabel in P.M. We
went up too the church in eve too a Reception for Arthur & Ruth. They had
a nice program & a swell supper. The "kids" got so many nice
presents. We got home about 11:15.
Sat. Jan. 19
Not such a nice day. Rather cloudy. It snowed quite hard for a little while
in eve. Martin cut wood all day. We went too Decorah in P.M. Mon & I took
Martin home in eve & then we went up town a few minutes.
Sun. Jan. 20
Quite a nice day but cool. Dean went over too Iona's in A.M. & spent
the day & eve. Arthur Ruth & Kenneth were here awhile in A.M. &
Arthur & Ruth were over & spent the eve.
Mon. Jan. 21
Nice bright day but cold. Didn't do too much. I went up town with Roy
& Bernice in eve. We women met with Mrs. Powers at Aunt Alice's too
make out the committees for the L.A.S. for the coming year. Cold nite.
Tues. Jan. 22
Quite a nice day but a chilly south wind. I washed & ironed. Arthur came
over in A.M. & got the car & he & Ruth went too Decorah. She got
a permanent. They got back here just as supper was ready so they stayed for
supper. Mon & Dean went too B.O. in P.M. Dean took our tractor on a load
of wood for Ray, as his wouldn't start, & Mon rode up with Roy. Dean
& Iona went too Matters too a shower dance on Mr. & Mrs. Geo. Knoke.
Martin A. came back about 3 P.M. too cut wood.
Wed. Jan. 23
Rather cloudy & quite warm until in eve the wind got around into the north
& it got much cooler. Started too snow about 3 & snowed quite hard for
a while. Dean hauled in feed in A.M. & cleaned the hen house. Mon helped
Martin cut wood in A.M. Mon & Dean went out just after dinner too fix a
telephone line & then Dean helped Martin cut wood until it snowed. Martin
went home then. Mon took the car up town & left it too be fixed. He rode
home with Howard.
Thurs. Jan. 24
Mon's 51st Birthday. Quite a nice day. Mon & Dean were up town almost
all day getting the car fixed. Dean drove Leonard B's car home about 4:30
& then Mon & Leonard came with our car about 5:45. Martin came about
3:30 too cut wood. Ruth & Arthur were over awhile in eve. Mon & I went
up town a few minutes after the kids went home too get the club dishes.
Fri. Jan. 25
Snowed very hard most of the A.M. & was a regular blizzard at times in P.M.
Not cold in A.M. but got very cold late in P.M. & eve. Strong wind in P.M.
which died down in the nite. Mon took Martin in A.M. early & bro't
Ruth home with him. Arthur came over later & was here for dinner. The men
went up town in P.M. I had Club in P.M. 21 of us here. Mon took Ruth home when
they got back from B.O. & then he took Bernice & Maxine home.
Sat. Jan. 26
Very cold day. 22º below. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Arthur went
with us. Cold down there. Came home about 4. Went up town awhile in eve. I went
up too Mama's awhile. Cold nite.
Sun. Jan. 27
Quite a nice day. Much warmer. Sun shone part of the time. Dean took me too
church in A.M. & then he went over too Iona's when he bro't
me home. Arthur & Ruth were over for dinner. Dean came home about 5.
Mon. Jan. 28
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men went too B.O. in P.M. Martin
came at noon too cut wood.
Tues. Jan. 29
Quite a nice warm day but the sun didn't shine much. Snowed a little in
P.M. Martin cut wood all day & finished up tonite. The men worked outside
all day doing odd jobs. We got a big load of coal at noon. Dean went over too
Howard's in eve. Ralph Fredenburg died very suddenly this eve.
Wed. Jan. 30
Quite a warm day. Snowed all day. The wind got around into the north in eve
& it got much colder & was a regular blizzard. Didn't do much
of anything. Dean went up town in eve just a few minutes. Got a letter from
Isa today.
Thurs. Jan. 31
Very cold & quite blustery early in A.M. but it got better later & was
quite nice in P.M. although still chilly. We went & got Arthur & Ruth
about 11 & went too Decorah & then on too Cresco about 1. Dean stayed
in Decorah until we came back then. Arthur & Ruth got some chairs in Cresco.
We bro't 3 of them home with us. Dean went over too Iona's in eve.
Ralph Fredenburg was buried today.
Fri. Feb. 1
Rather a blustery cold day. Sun shone part of the time though. The men hauled
in feed & wood in A.M. They took a load of wood up town in P.M. with the
tractor & sled. Took part of the wood too the I.O.O.F. for kindling &
part too Mama.
Sat. Feb. 2
Cold day but quite bright. We went up & got Mama & then over & got
Iona & went too Decorah in A.M. Quite a crowd in town. Mama & Iona came
home too supper with us. We went up town in eve & then Dean took Iona home.
We came home about 12:30. Cold nite.
Sun. Feb. 3
Windy chilly rather a blustery day at times but not too bad. The sun shone some
& it was somewhat warmer. No church. Dean went over too Iona's &
spent the day & eve. Arthur & Ruth were over here & spent the eve.
Mon. Feb. 4
Cloudy, foggy, damp, windy day. Warmer. The men went up town awhile in P.M.
Tues. Feb. 5
Not very nice day. Foggy early in A.M. & then it rained & rained hard
at times off & on all day. Thunder & lightning too. Late in P.M. the
sun shone a little & it was nicer in eve but the wind got around into the
west & it got colder. We left home about 9:30 & went & got Iona
& went too Locust. The kids stopped at Lesters & then on too see Rev.
Losen then down too Arthur Barth's & on too Decorah. Iona came home
too supper with us & then Dean took her home after chores. Snowed some in
the nite.
Wed. Feb. 6
Cold, blustery day. Wind blew terribly hard. Snowed off & on all day but
not hard & most of it blew away. The men took the car up town early in A.M.
too have it fixed. They got home about 3:30. I was over at Howard's a
few minutes at noon & Dean was over there in eve. The wind went down in
the nite.
Thurs. Feb. 7
Dandy nice day. We left home about 9:30 & went & got Iona & Lilia
& went too La Crosse. Iona got her wedding dress, Lelia her formal &
Dean got a new suit. We left for home about 3:30. Something went wrong with
the car when we were just out of Hokah a ways but we went on too Caledonia &
Mon called Leonard B. too come & tow us in. We came on too Spring Grove
& met Leonard there. Got too B.O. about 5:30 & then we got Leonard's
car & came on home. Dean helped Mon with some of the chores & then he
took the girls on home. He came back too B.O. & rode home from there with
Art W.
Fri. Feb. 8
My 54th Birthday. Not too bad a day but not too nice. Sun shone some. I washed
& ironed. The men hauled in feed & wood in A.M. Mon walked up town in
P.M. & rode home with Fritz about 5. Dean cleaned the hen house in P.M.
& hauled in straw. Marion walked over in A.M. & was here for dinner.
Arthur & Ruth were over in eve.
Sat. Feb. 9
Nice bright day. We sold our hogs this A.M. Leonard Dow hauled them too Decorah
for us. Mon went with the last load. Dean went too Decorah with Quandahl's
& back with them. Mon came home with Fritz. Dean went up town in eve with
Quandahl's. Mon & I with Fritz & we all came back with Fritz.
We sold 54 hogs which weighed 11160 lbs. @ $14.35 per cwt. & bro't
$1601.28.
Sun. Feb. 10
Dandy nice day. I went too church in A.M. with Bernice & Maxine. Dean walked
over too Iona's in A.M. & stayed the day & eve. Howard & Bill
Leonhart were here in P.M.
Mon. Feb. 11
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy nice day. The
men took the hog shute back too Louie's in A.M. & got a jag of corn
fodder. Vern Porter came after dinner & the men went with him out fixing
the telephone lines.
Tues. Feb. 12
Not so nice in A.M. but cleared off & was quite nice in P.M. The men walked
up town in A.M. & Fritz bro't them home in P.M. Dean took Howard's
car & went over too Iona's in eve. Parnell Hageman & Nora Ward
were married this A.M.
Wed. Feb. 13
Not too nice a day although not too bad. The sun shone some. Fritz took us too
Decorah about 9:30. I got my hair fixed & both of the men got hair cuts.
Arthur & Ruth took Dean too Locust, too practice for the wedding in eve.
Howard took Mon too La Crosse in eve too get repairs for our car.
Thurs. Feb. 14
Roy Wanless died early this A.M. Dean & Iona's Wedding Day. Snowed
a little early in A.M. The wind blew terribly hard all day & it was cold.
Marion W. came with the taxi & got Dean about 2. The wedding party went
too Decorah too have their pictures taken. Mon got home about 12:30 with our
car. Mon went & got Marion about 4 & they did the milking then we went
& got Maxine & Ruth & we went too Locust too the wedding. Arthur
went with Dean. We had supper over there about 6:30. The wedding was at 8. Large
crowd out. Had lunch again after the wedding. Ruth went home with her folks
& Arthur. We got lost coming home. Cold nite.
Fri. Feb. 15
Chilly day but bright. Quite a strong wind from the south. We went up too Mama's
about noon & Dean & Iona came there & we took them too Mabel where
they took the bus for La Crosse. We stopped in B.O. a little while on our way
home.
Sat. Feb. 16
Dandy nice day but a little cool & still it thawed quite a little. We went
too Decorah about 11. Arthur & Ruth went with us. I went too the show "Bells
of Saint Marys". It was surely good. We went up town awhile in eve. Roy
Wanless was buried today.
Sun. Feb. 17
Beautiful day. Mon took me too church in A.M. & then we went over too Marion's
for dinner. Albert's were there too. Had a good dinner.
Mon. Feb. 18
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Arthur & Ruth came over in A.M. &
Mon took them too Cresco & Arthur drove his new tractor home. (Ford). Dean
called about 1 that they were in B.O. so when Mon & Ruth got back from Cresco
about 2:30 we went up & got them & they were here for supper. We took
them over too Philip's in eve. Got a letter from Isa.
Tues. Feb. 19
Mon bought a stock hog from Ludvig this A.M. Snowed hard for a little while
very early in A.M. & then cleared off & was a nice day. Very windy though
but not cold. Got colder in eve & was quite blustery at times. Dana Price
was here awhile in A.M. Arthur & Louie came over in A.M. & got a cow.
Mon went & got Marion about 4:30 & then after chores we went & got
Dean & Iona & went too Matter's too a Shower Dance for them. Large
crowd & every one seemed too have a good time. The kids got over $90. Si's
had had Philips car & bro't it down so the kids drove it home. We
got home about 2.
Wed. Feb. 20
Nice bright day. Thawed quite a little. Mon took me up town about 10:30 &
I went with Paul & Miriam too the [Seldon?] Sale. The Club served lunch.
We sold out what we had. I rode home with Roy's. They had a chiravari
on Dean & Iona tonite but Mon was too tired too go. Arthur was over a few
minutes early in A.M.
Thurs. Feb. 21
Quite a nice day. Thawed some. Dean, Iona & Philip were over awhile in P.M.
Fri. Feb. 22
Rather cloudy most of the day & chilly with quite a little wind. Mon took
Maxine & Jerry, Ruth & I too Club at Elsie's in P.M. Quite a few
out. We had a stork shower on Mrs. Fergeson the A.C. ministers wife. She got
some nice presents. We had a grand lunch. Paul Ward took a heifer too Decorah
too the Sale for us & also a steer down too have butchered for us. The heifer
weighed 780 lbs. @ $10.40 & bro't $78.64.
Sat. Feb. 23
Not too bad a day but rather chilly. We went over & got Maxine & Marion
about 10:30 & went too Decorah. Large crowd in town. Marion came home with
"Happy" & Jack & Johnnie Whalen rode home with us. We went
up town awhile in eve. I went up too Mama's awhile. Sid Brickner died
early this A.M.
Sun. Feb. 24
Quite a nice day. Mon took Bernice Lizzie & I too church. They had a farewell
party for Dr. Hawkins & family after church. Quite a few out. Had a grand
dinner. Albert Erickson's bro't us home.
Mon. Feb. 25
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. I washed & ironed. Mon hauled in hay in A.M.
& Arthur came over awhile in P.M. & helped him haul in corn fodder.
Mon went over too Elder Jerviss' in eve with Ralph Greenslade a little
while. Rained some in the nite & then turned too snow. Didn't snow
much though.
Tues. Feb. 26
Rather a dark day. Not cold. Started too snow about 2 & kept it up the rest
of P.M. & eve. We went over & got Marion about 12:30 & went too
Decorah too Sid Brickner's funeral at the M.E. Church. Very large crowd
out & so many beautiful flowers. Had a baby calf this P.M.
Wed. Feb. 27
Quite a nice day. Cool but still it thawed quite a little. Mon worked outside
all day. Cleaning out calf pens, barns & hauling the manure out in the field.
We went up town a few minutes in eve. Had another little calf tonite.
Thurs. Feb. 28
Dandy nice day. Very warm. Thawed a lot. Mon took me too L.A.S. at the church.
Large crowd out. Started the new way of entertaining. 4 persons serve all the
food. Violet U., Jennie W. Myrtle Snell & Lottie Manuel served. Had a swell
dinner. Ernest Sheley & Nina Halse were married today.
Fri. Mar. 1
Not too nice a day but still not too cold. Mon worked outside in A.M. Arthur
& Fritz were here awhile after dinner. Mon went up town awhile in P.M. Arthur
rode home with him.
Sat. Mar. 2
Nice day. A lot of the snow left us. We went too Decorah about 10:30. Arthur,
Ruth, Mrs. K., Jimmie W. & mama rode down with us. Large crowd in town.
Only mama rode home with us & she came home too supper with us & then
we went up town in eve. I went up too Rev. Thompsons. They held open house for
the people of the community too meet Paul's wife who just came from France.
Quite a few there & they had a nice program & lunch. Mrs. Paul seems
very nice. We came home about 11.
Sun. Mar. 3
Beautiful day. Very warm & it thawed a lot. Arthur, Ruth, Dean, Iona &
Mr. Y. were here & spent the day. I took a tumble just as the folks were
going home.
Mon. Mar. 4
Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Thawed a lot.
I washed & ironed. Mon went up town a minute in P.M. & then he went
over & put in a phone for Ralph Greenslade, on Fred Walters place.
Tues. Mar. 5
Rather cloudy & dark in A.M. Started too rain about 4 & rained quite
hard the rest of the P.M. & on into the nite. Mon hauled in hay & wood
in A.M. We went over too Howard's about 4 P.M. for a little while. Sonny
is 6 years old today.
Wed. Mar. 6
Not a very nice day. Quite windy & the sun didn't shine much. We went
up town about 11:30. I went up too the Lutheran Church too dinner. A large crowd
& a dandy good dinner. I went up too mama's in P.M. Ruby Halse was
there too. Mon did some work on the telephone lines.
Thurs. Mar. 7
Not too nice a day but not too bad. Rather warm with not too much sun shine.
Mon started hauling up wood in P.M. Started too snow in the nite & quite
a little snow fell.
Fri. Mar. 8
Regular blizzard until about 3 P.M. It quit snowing but the wind kept on blowing.
Not too cold but it got colder late in P.M. Mon didn't let the cows out
until about 3. Some very large snow banks around. No mail today.
Sat. Mar. 9
Nice day. We went too Decorah about 10:30. I got my hair fixed. Very large crowd
in town. We went up town in eve. The snow plow went by here early this A.M.
& the mail man came today.
Sun. Mar. 10
Nice day but the breeze was cool. Mon took me too church in A.M. Arthur &
Ruth were over a little while in P.M.
Mon. Mar. 11
Very nice day only quite windy. I washed & ironed. Mon hauled in feed in
A.M. & went too school meeting in P.M. Only 3 out so they put Harry Q. back
in again. Had a letter from Isa today. Mr. & Mrs. Krumm left the farm today
for their new home in Decorah so the kids have the place too themselves now.
Tues. Mar. 12
Not so bad early in A.M. but clouded up & we had quite a lot of thunder
in A.M. & a sprinkle of rain. Started too rain about 4 & rained quite
hard at times the rest of the P.M. & eve. Quite warm. Most of our snow went
during the day & nite. Mon hauled up wood. Arthur came over about 11 &
helped him until it rained. Mon took him home then.
Wed. Mar. 13
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was just like a summer day.
We went too Cresco about 12. Arthur, Ruth & Bernice went with us. Bernice
& I went too the R.E.A. meeting at the High School Building. We got home
about 5.
Thurs. Mar. 14
Another dark day & it started too rain again about 3 P.M. but it didn't
rain too hard. Arthur came over & helped Mon haul up wood until it rained.
Mon took him home then. We went up town awhile in eve. Mart L. & Glen A.
rode home with us.
Fri. Mar. 15
Another dark, dreary damp day. Didn't do too much. Mon went out on the
telephone lines in P.M. & I went up too mama's.
Sat. Mar. 16
Another rainy day. Rained quite hard at times. We went too Decorah about 10.
Maxine, Arthur & Ruth went with us. Very large crowd in town.
Sun. Mar. 17
Another dark, rainy day. Mon took Bernice, Arthur, Ruth & I too church in
A.M. & then he came up too the church afterward too a farewell party too
Mr. & Mrs. Krumm. Large crowd out for such a bad day & bad roads. Had
a very nice dinner & a nice program in P.M.
Mon. Mar. 18
Not very nice in A.M. Cloudy & damp but it did clear off late in P.M. &
was very nice. Louie K. was here a while in A.M. Brought the school treasurers
books & papers here. We went up town awhile in P.M. I went up too mama's.
We went over too Arthurs in eve & they were just going up town with the
tractor so we took them up with the car & then went back there & spent
the eve. First time we had been too see them. Much cooler tonite. Mon got 2
new tires today at Gordon's.
Tues. Mar. 19
Ruth's Birthday. Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon helped Howard
saw wood in P.M. The ground dried up a lot today. Let the hens out this P.M.
for the first time.
Wed. Mar. 20
Dandy nice warm day. Did odd jobs all day. Was outside quite a lot. The school
directors met here in P.M. They put me in as treasurer too fill out Louie's
term. Arthur & Ruth had the car today & went too Decorah & we all
went too Decorah in eve. The men went too a Ford "doings" at Klinkers
& Ruth & I went too the Show. "Leave Her Too Heaven". Marion
W. rode out too his home with us.
Thurs. Mar. 21
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Mon helped Art
Walters saw wood today. I walked part way too L.A.S. & then Florence &
Albert met me & took me the rest of the way & bro't me home. Fern,
Miriam, Hilda R., & Pearl Darling entertained. Large crowd out & they
had a swell dinner.
Fri. Mar. 22
Not such a nice day. Rather damp but still it didn't rain although it
looked all day as if it might. Had quite a lot of thunder & lightning in
eve, but no rain. Arthur came over & he & Mon finished hauling up the
wood. Harry Falck was here in A.M. & dehorned calves. Dean & Iona were
over in eve. They bro't their wedding pictures over. They are just fine.
They took one over too Howard's but were only over there a little while.
Sat. Mar. 23
Not very nice. Started too rain about 10:30 & kept it up off & on all
day & some times quite hard. Mon & I went too Decorah about 10. We stopped
at Arthurs going & coming. Large crowd in town. I got my hair fixed. We
went up town in eve.
Sun. Mar. 24
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Ruth & I went up too the Lutheran church about

Had a dandy good dinner. Nice program in P.M. We got home about 5. Mon &
Arthur both went fishing. Mon got 17.

Looked rainy part of the time but still was quite a nice day. Quite warm. I
washed & ironed. A man came up from Klinker's & put the disc together
& greased the tractor etc. in A.M. Mon hauled manure in P.M. & hauled
in feed. Ludvig Anderson was here awhile in eve.
Tues. Mar. 26
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon, Ruth & I went too Decorah in P.M. Arthur
helped Ed Knoke saw wood. We went up town a little while in eve. Had a letter
from Isa today.
Wed. Mar. 27
Dandy nice warm day & it was a regular summer day. We sawed wood in A.M.
Ruth & Arthur were over & helped. Albert Emery sawed it. They sawed
Harold Seelyes & Ludvig Anderson's wood that was piled here in the
yard in P.M. Didn't get through until about 6. Ruth & I went down
on the creek in P.M. & found some flowers. Art & Ruth & Albert were
here for supper.

Dandy nice warm day. Mon helped Ray H. saw wood in A.M. & hauled in feed
& did odd jobs in P.M. I raked & burned grass in P.M. We went up town
awhile in eve. Arthur & Ruth went with us. Ruth & I went up too mama's
a few minutes.
Fri. Mar. 29
Very warm nice day. Mon & I went over too Arthurs early in A.M. & helped
saw wood over there. Mon took Ruth & I too Club in P.M. at Dorothea R's.
Quite a few out & we had a swell lunch. Mon & I went over too Arthurs
in eve & Ruth & I made a couple of angel food cakes. Got cooler in eve
& the wind blew quite hard.
Sat. Mar. 30
Arthur's 29th Birthday. Nice day only cooler & windy. We went too
Decorah about 10:30 & Arthur & Ruth went with us. Big crowd in town.
We went up town after supper & got some ice cream & went back too Arthur's
& had ice cream & birthday cake. Got home about 9:30.
Sun. Mar. 31
Leonard's Birthday. Beautiful day. We went & got Arthur & Ruth
& went too Claude's & spent the day celebrating the boys birthdays.
When we got there we found Marie, Paul & Marjorie who had come for the occasion.
Dean, Iona & Mr. Y. & Mama were there too. Had a swell dinner. In P.M.
all the "kids" went too the woods fishing, hunting, etc. It was
surely good too all be together again.

Nice day but quite windy. I washed & ironed. Mon hauled manure. We went
over too Dean's in eve.
Tues. Apr. 2
Nice day but cooler & quite windy. Mon helped Arthur clean grain in A.M.
Arthur came over in P.M. & got the disc & Mon went over with him too
get it adjusted & working O.K. Mon drained the old oil out of his tractor
when he got home. Had quite a lot of thunder & lightning & some rain
in the nite.

Mostly dark day but the sun did shine a little. Cool & very windy. Terribly
windy late in P.M. & nite. Arthur was over & helped Mon awhile early
in A.M. We all went too Decorah in P.M. awhile.
Thurs. Apr. 4
Bright day but terribly windy & rather cold. Mon went too B.O. in P.M. &
fixed telephone lines. We went up town in eve awhile. Cold nite. Froze quite
a little. Saw Dean & Iona up town. The wind went down tonite.
Fri. Apr. 5
Quite cold this A.M. early. Ice froze on the water but it warmed up during the
day. Was quite nice until late in P.M. it clouded up & sprinkled some. Mon
hauled in feed all A.M. & went up town in P.M.
Sat. Apr. 6
Quite a nice warm day. We went up & got Mama & went too Decorah about
11. Not so many in town today. Too many working in the fields. I got my hair
fixed. Mrs. Roy Brown rode home from Decorah with us too. We went up town in
eve. Dean, Iona, Edna & Clyde came down here when we came home from town.
Dean got some [harness?]. Had our last little calf this morn.
Sun. Apr. 7
Cooler day & it looked quite rainy & did start too rain about 1 &
kept it up the rest of P.M. & eve. On took Bernice & I too church in
A.M.
Mon. Apr. 8
Frozen this A.M. Ice on water. Not so nice early in A.M. but it cleared off
& was a nice day but cool & very windy. Mon did odd jobs. He went out
east in P.M. & tried too plow but it was too wet. Arthur & Ruth were
here a few minutes just after dinner. Mon & I went too Decorah too the Show
in eve. "Breakfast In Hollywood" & it was surely good.
Tues. Apr. 9
Frozen quite hard this A.M. Nice day. Warmed up a lot. I washed & ironed.
Mon helped Dave saw wood in A.M. & then about 2:30 P.M. he went down in
the N.W. field & plowed sod the rest of the P.M.
Wed. Apr. 10
Frozen this A.M. Rather a chilly day with quite a wind. Mon went too B.O. in
A.M. & got a tire fixed. We hauled up a jag of hay in P.M. & then went
down on the creek fishing but we only got 8. Too cold for the fish. Howard's
came along in eve & we went over too Dean's with them. Got home about
12. Froze tonite again.
Thurs. Apr. 11
Not very nice early in A.M. Snowed some. Cleared off later & was quite a
nice day. Warmed up some. Mon went too B.O. early in A.M. & then when he
got back he started plowing out in the east field & plowed the rest of the
day. I went up town with Pearl a little while in P.M. We went up too mama's
a little while too. Sonny got his hair cut.
Fri. Apr. 12
About 28º. Quite a nice day. Very cool early in A.M. but warmed up a lot.
Mon plowed out east until about 3:30. He finished over there then & then
went over too Arthur's & got the disc. We were over at Arthur's
a few minutes at noon.
Sat. Apr. 13
Nice day. Quite warm. Mon disced in A.M. & we went too Decorah in P.M. Ruth
Koenig & Walter went with us. We hauled Whalen's home from Breezy
Hill. Something went wrong with their car so we hauled it home. We went up town
in eve. Had a letter from Isa.
Sun. Apr. 14
Nice day. Quite warm until late in P.M. it clouded up & got much cooler
& the wind blew quite hard. We went over too Arthurs about 10 (no church)
awhile & then we came home & did up a few things & got some lunch
& went back over there & went fishing down on their creek. Took our
dinner down there & had a picnic. Got quite a few fish. Arlin F. was here
awhile in A.M. early.
Mon. Apr. 15
Quite a windy chilly day but bright. I washed & ironed. Mon disced in A.M.
& dragged in P.M. until about 4. He went out with the seeder then &
started seeding. Mon took the car up too Roy's in eve & left it too
be fixed.
Tues. Apr. 16
Quite a nice day. Rather windy in P.M. Mon seeded all day. I raked in A.M. &
again in P.M. Arthur was over in eve with his tractor & put one of our lights
on it so he could work at night. He didn't have enough lights on his.
Edie Wade died tonite.
Wed. Apr. 17
Warm nice day. Rather windy. Clouded up late in P.M. & looked mighty stormy
but we just got a sprinkle at supper time. Cleared off & was a nice night.
Mon finished sowing the east piece about 10:30 & then we went out &
got a jag of hay before dinner. He dragged the seeding & then started plowing
down north.
Thurs. Apr. 18
Quite a nice day. Windy as usual. Mon plowed all day. Martin Abrahamson came
about 4 P.M. & started splitting wood here. Harold Cox bro't our car
home about 7 P.M. We went up town a little while in eve.
Fri. Apr. 19
Good Friday. Mama's 75th Birthday. Nice day but windy. Quite warm. Mon
finished plowing that piece about 10 & then he dragged the rest of the day.
Martin split wood. Ruth, Francis & Harriet came about 2 & stayed until
after 3 & then they went up too Edie Wade's funeral & came back
here for supper. Ruth & Arthur were here for supper too. They all left about
7. There was a fire at Jessie Emery's this P.M. & Mon & Martin
went up too that. It wasn't too bad but could have been a whole lot worse.
Sat. Apr. 20
Nice warm day. Mon sowed grain in A.M. & we went too Decorah in P.M. Arthur
& Mama went with us. I got my hair fixed & got a new hat. Mama came
home too supper with us. We went up town in eve. Jimmie W. rode up town &
back with us. Martin split wood all day.
Sun. Apr. 21
Easter Sunday. Nice day. Quite warm & windy. Martin went somewhere during
the day but was back here when we got home. Mon took me too Easter Services.
No minister but they had a nice program. We went up too Mama's for dinner.
Claude's were there too. Leonard Blaess was here awhile just after supper.
Mon. Apr. 22
Nice day but quite windy and a little cooler. Mon & I went & got a jag
of hay early in A.M. & then Mon seeded the rest of the day. Gust & Marion
were here awhile after dinner. Martin split wood all day. Arthur came over about
noon & got the car & he & Ruth went too Decorah in P.M. He bro't
the car back in eve & stayed a few minutes. Grace Blaess had a stroke at
supper time.
Tues. Apr. 23
Nice day. Rather windy. Mon took Martin over too Art Walter's early in
A.M. He is going too split wood over there. I washed & ironed. Mon finished
seeding about 11. He went out too drag in P.M. but Dean & Iona came over
about 2:30 & Dean went too dig out some foxes so Mon helped him. They got
5 little ones. Iona did her ironing & then we went out where the men were.
They went home about 5. Artie Q. mowed the lawn after school. Floyd B. called
about 4 A.M. that Grace had just passed away. Mon, Maxine & I went up town
awhile in eve.
Wed. Apr. 24
Dean's 26th Birthday. Nice day. Mon dragged in A.M. & finished up
that field in P.M. then he went down in the north field & tried too plow
sod but it is so dry. We went & got Arthur & Ruth in eve & went
over too Dean's. They had gone & got Mama in P.M. so she was there.
Gunderson's, Wilson's & Lilia & Stanley were there too.
We had a nice lunch. I took our angel food. We bro't Mama home. Got home
about 12.
Thurs. Apr. 25
Nice day. Quite warm until about 4 it got much cooler & the wind blew quite
hard. We went too Decorah about 12. Went too the Funeral Home too Grace Blaess's
funeral & then on too B.O. too the Lutheran Church. Mon was a pall bearer.
Fred Lange rode up from Decorah with us. Large crowd out too the funeral &
beautiful flowers. Mon went up too Gust's in A.M. & got the rake.
Little son born too Katheryn & Warren Price. Donald Arthur.
Fri. Apr. 26
Nice day but cool. I helped Mon get a jag of hay early in A.M. & then he
raked & burned corn stalks most of the day. He went over & got Ruth
at noon & she drove our car too Club at Lillian S's & took Maxine
& I. Quite a few out & we had a good lunch.
Sat. Apr. 27
About 25º this morn with frost on the ground & it froze quite ice on
a pail of water. Warmed up & was a nice day. Mon went over & got Marion
& we went too Decorah about 11. Stopped & got Arthur. Ruth started too
work in Decorah this morning helping Mr. Stone. Quite a few in town. We waited
& bro't Ruth home. Got home about 6. Marion came home earlier with
Gust's. We went up town in eve. Mon bought a new tire of "Wimpy"
tonite. Johnnie & Jeanne W. rode home from town with us. Had a letter from
Isa.

Nice day but still it was chilly. Arthur came over in A.M. & bro't
the disc home. He & Mon fixed the [stone? boot?], that they have for the
disc, a little better. Mon went up town early in A.M. & had the new tire
put on the car. Dean, Iona & Mr. Y. came over for dinner & stayed until
after 6.

Nice day but quite windy. I washed & ironed. Mon disced all day. We went
over too Howards a little while after chores.
Tues. Apr. 30
Nice day but windy. Mon disced in A.M. & started plowing in P.M. He spaded
up my little garden spot here in the yard. We went up town a little while in
eve. Put the young stock out across the road too pasture in eve.
Wed. May 1
Nice day but terribly windy. Quite warm in A.M. but cooler in P.M. Mon plowed
all day. I made garden in A.M. Artie Q. was here & mowed the lawn after
school. Put the cows out in the pasture today.
Thurs. May 2
Rather cloudy most of the day. Sprinkled a few drops off & on all day &
in eve but not enough too dampen the ground. Mon finished plowing that one piece
about 10:30 & then we bro't in a load of hay & put it in the barn
before dinner. Got another one after dinner. That's the last of our hay
out in the field. Mon disced down north in P.M. We went up town in eve. I went
up too Mama's awhile. Olive was there too.
Fri. May 3
Rather dark & dreary all day. A cool wind too. Mon disced until about 3
P.M. We went over too Deans after that. Stayed for supper.
Sat. May 4
Not very nice day. Dark & cold & Sprinkled off & on during the day.
Had quite a shower in Decorah but not up here. We went too Decorah about 10:30.
Arthur, Mama & Anna Whalen went with us. Quite a few in town. I got my hair
fixed. Ruth came home with us. She finished her work today. Mama came home too
supper with us. We went up town in eve. Florence, Muriel & I went over too
Dorothea R's awhile in eve. John & Jimmie W. rode home with us.

Quite a nice day but chilly & windy. Mon went over too Marion's awhile
early in A.M. & then he took me too church. Florence, Albert & Norris
came down after church. We had dinner & then went down on the creek. The
men tried fishing but didn't get anything. They were here for supper &
went home about 7.
Mon. May 6
Quite a nice day. I washed. Mon went up too Francis Gossman's in A.M.
& got some cut corn & then went on too Mabel. Jimmie Whalen came home
with him too help us awhile. We went too Decorah in P.M. & ordered some
pipe & a stock tank for across the road. Jimmie & Jack went with us.
We went over too Arthurs in eve.
Tues. May 7
Not too nice in A.M. & part of the P.M. Looked quite rainy & sprinkled
a little. Cleared off later in P.M. & was quite nice but cool. Mon &
Jimmie worked at the fence until about 3. Leonard B. bro't the pipes &
the tank so they started working at that.
Wed. May 8
About 32º this morn with a light frost on the grass. Quite a nice day although
windy. Somewhat warm. The men finished up the water works about 10:30 &
then worked at the fence until about 3:30. Dean & Iona came then & they
came too the house. The kids went home about 5. We went up town in eve. Arthur
& Ruth went with us. Ruth & I went over too Lillian's too practice
for "Mothers Day". We got home about 11. Cool nite.
Thurs. May 9
About 32º again this morn with frost again. Quite a nice day. Warmed up
quite a little. Mon & Jimmie worked at the fence all day. Artie Q. mowed
the lawn after school & Bobbie came with him.
Fri. May 10
Not a very nice day. Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard
but still not enough too do much good. Quite warm early in A.M. but got much
colder later in the day. The men quit fencing when it started too rain &
we took Jimmie home. Stopped at Arthurs a little while. Ruth doesn't feel
very good. Mrs. K is there. We went too the school picnic. Dean & Iona were
there & they came home with us as soon as dinner was over & we all went
too Decorah. Large crowd down there. The kids stayed too supper with us.
Sat. May 11
About 22º this morn. The ground was frozen & ice frozen on the water.
Quite a nice day. Warmed up quite a little. Mon went over too Marion's
early in A.M. & then he tried too plow but it was too dry. He took me too
B.O. at noon. Stopped at Arthur's a few minutes on our way up there. Ruth
is better. The Joan of Arc entertained the Mothers of the community at the Lutheran
church this P.M. Not too large a crowd out. Had a nice program & lunch.
I came home with Maxine. We went up town in eve. I went up too Mama's
awhile. It rained some in eve. I got a Mothers Day card from Art & Ruth.
Cleared off in eve & was a cool nite. Got a box of candy from Dean's
for Mothers Day.

Quite a nice day but chilly. We went over too Arthur's about 10:30 &
stayed until about 4. Ruth is better.
Mon. May 13
Quite a nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon disced in A.M. & dragged in
P.M. We went over too Arthur's a minute in A.M. Ruth is better.
Tues. May 14
Quite a nice day. Somewhat warmer. Mon dragged in A.M. & started planting
corn in P.M. We went over too Arthur's just a minute after chores. Ruth
is O.K. I cleaned the brooder house this P.M.
Wed. May 15
Had a little shower early in A.M. but not enough too hardly lay the dust. Quite
a nice day but windy & cool. Mon planted corn all day. We went up town awhile
in eve.
Thurs. May 16
Nice day. Somewhat warmer. Mon finished planting that field about 9:30 &
then he dragged it before he came in too dinner. We went too Decorah in P.M.
Mrs. K. rode down with us from Arthurs. Artie Q. mowed the lawn this A.M. Mon
got a hair cut.
Fri. May 17
Looked rainy all A.M. & started too sprinkle about 11:30. Kept it up off
& on all P.M. Not enough too do too much good. Mon went up town early in
A.M. a minute. He plowed the big garden when he got home. We went over too Arthurs
a minute just at supper time.
Sat. May 18
Nice day. Quite warm. We went too Decorah about 9:30. I got my hair fixed. Quite
a crowd in town but not so many we knew. We went over & got Dean & Iona
after chores & went too Mabel. We run around town awhile & then went
too the second Show. Double feature "Blonde Fever" & "Don't
Fence Me In". It rained very hard while we were in the Show & before
we went in & all the way home. We let the kids out at Gunderson's
& they walked down across the field. We got home about 1:30.
Sun. May 19
Not a very nice day. Rather dark & cloudy. Sprinkled off & on during
the day. Mon went out on the telephone lines about 9:30 & got back about
1.
Mon. May 20
Not very nice day. Sprinkled off & on during the day although the sun shone
some. Real cool & windy. I washed & ironed. Mon finished plowing the
north piece for corn. Got a letter from Isa.
Tues. May 21
Dandy nice day. Warmer. Mon dragged the garden early in A.M. & disced the
rest of the day. I planted garden. Worked out there almost all day. We went
up town in eve. Arthur & Ruth went with us. Arthur, Ruth & I went up
too Mama's awhile. "Wimpy" was there too. Mr. Hovden was here
at noon & bought Judy for $35. Little daughter born too Raymond & Ruby
Halse.
Wed. May 22
Not too bad a day. Arthur came over early in A.M. & helped get Judy &
Billie in the barn. He took the car back with him & they went too Mabel
in P.M. He bro't the car home in eve but took it back with him again.
Mon disced until about 4 & then dragged the rest of P.M. Rained hard in
the nite with quite a lot of thunder & lightning.
Thurs. May 23
Rained quite hard early in A.M. & then rained off & on all during the
day. Mr. Hovden came after Judy about 9 A.M. Didn't have much trouble
getting her loaded in the truck. Arthur & Ruth came over about 12:30 &
we went too Decorah with them. Large crowd in town. Rained hard again in the
nite. Railroad strike went into effect about 4 P.M. Everything tied up.
Fri. May 24
Rained early in A.M. but cleared off & was quite nice until later in P.M.
it clouded up & rained again in eve. Vern Porter came about 9:30 & he
& Mon went out on the telephone line. They got back here about 12:45 &
Vern stayed for dinner & until about 6. Artie Q. mowed the lawn.
Sat. May 25
Not very nice in A.M. Rather cool & drizzly but cleared off in P.M. &
was very nice. Much warmer. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Walter Nelson went
with us. Large crowd in town. Went up town in eve. I went up too Mama's
& then she & I went over too Raymond & Ruby's too see the
new baby girl. She is a very nice baby. Mon was over at Howard's most
of the A.M. watching them pull stumps with the county bull dozer. The Railroads
strike was over late this P.M.
Sun. May 26
Very nice day. Arthur came over early in A.M. too change the wheels on his tractor
& too put the corn plow on. Ruth & I went too church & then she
came on over here & they stayed here for dinner. Arthur went home on the
tractor & Mon & I took Ruth home about 3. Mon & I went over too
Dean's in eve. Mr. Y's. Birthday. All of his children but Lester's
were there. We had a nice lunch. Got home about 12.

Nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed & then planted some more garden.
Mon disced until about 4 & then he dragged.
Tues. May 28
Dandy nice warm day. Mon dragged until about 10 & then he started too plant
corn. He dragged what he had planted, after chores in eve.
Wed. May 29
Dandy nice day. Mon planted corn. Finished about 4:30. He dragged again in eve.
Arthur & Ruth had the car & went too Decorah this P.M.
Thurs. May 30
Dandy nice day although it did look quite rainy at times. Quite windy. Mon went
over too Marion's a little while early in A.M. We took Ruth & Walter
too La Crosse too meet Fritz. He has been in Chicago at the Hospital for some
time. We left home about 10. Stopped in B.O. a little while. Had too detour
from Mabel too Spring Grove. Got into L.C. about 12:30. Fritz got in about 1.
We had a lunch & then came home by Lanesboro. Got home about 5.
Fri. May 31
Very nice in A.M. & until late in P.M. it clouded up & got quite cool
& windy. Mon did odd jobs all day. We went over too Arthur's a few
minutes in A.M. We went & got Ruth at noon & she drove our car too Club
at Fern's. Gladys went with us. Quite a few out. Had initiation. Ruth,
Faith Fergeson, Jeane Radcliff, Bernice Newhouse, Doris Nash & Lettie Wright
joined. Had a swell lunch. Maxine rode home with us. Dean & Iona were over
awhile in eve.
Sat. June 1
Not very nice day. Cool. Sprinkled off & on during the day. We went up &
got Mama about 10:30 & went too Decorah. Large crowd in town. Had my hair
fixed. Mama came home too supper with us & then we took her home in eve.

Ground covered with frost this morn. Quite cool early in A.M. but warmed up
some during the day. Very nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon started plowing
for beans. We went up town at noon too vote. Arthur & Ruth went along. Cool
nite.
Tues. June 4
Frost on the grass again this morning. Nice day, somewhat warmer. Mon finished
plowing the bean ground about 10 & then he dragged & disced the rest
of the day. We went over too Roy's in eve. Dean & Iona came over there
too & we stayed until after 11. The kids stopped here a few minutes on their
way home. Artie mowed the lawn in P.M. I went over too Pearl's a little
while late in P.M.
Wed. June 5
Nice day. Quite warm. Mon disced & dragged in A.M. He went over & got
Arthur & Ruth after dinner & Arthur helped him take the disc apart &
put it away, put the corn planter away & widen out the wheels on the tractor.
Ruth & I visited. I worked in the garden in A.M. & did other odd jobs.
We took the kids home & went on too B.O. a minute. Dean & Iona came
over in eve & got 3 sows that Mon gave them. Ray Halse hauled them in his
new pick up. It looked quite stormy in eve but didn't even sprinkle.
Thurs. June 6
Dandy nice day. Warmest day we have had. Mon used the weeder on the corn field
in A.M. & we went too Decorah in P.M. & got our baby chicks. Got 410
of them.
Fri. June 7
Very warm day again. Looked rainy off & on all day & sprinkled a little
in A.M. but the sun shone most of the day. Looked quite stormy late in P.M.
but we didn't get any rain. Mon went too Prosper early in A.M. & got
some boards too make a gate. He got that made & put up about 10. Marion
came over about 10 & stayed until about 2. Mon finished weeding that corn
field in P.M. & then did some other odd jobs.
Sat. June 8
Dandy nice day. Mon did odd jobs in A.M. Roy & Clyde were over here early
in A.M. & changed the wheels on Roy's tractor. We went too Decorah
about 10. Arthur & Ruth went with us. Quite a crowd in town. Mama went down
on the bus & came home with us. She came home too supper with us & then
we took her home in eve. Johnnie & Jeanne rode home from B.O. with us.
Sun. June 9
Nice day. Rather windy. Mon took Ruth & I too church. Mrs. Krumm was the
minister. She gave a good talk. It clouded up late in P.M. & looked very
stormy. Started too sprinkle about 6:30 & then later in eve we had quite
a lot of thunder & lightning & quite a little rain. The storm kept up
most of the nite.
Mon. June 10
Looked quite stormy most of A.M. & thundered off & on but cleared off
& was nice in P.M. Plenty warm. I washed & ironed. Mon started plowing
corn. We went over too Dean's a minute in eve. Got home before 9. Had
quite an electrical storm in the nite, but it didn't rain much. Artie
Q. mowed the lawn this P.M.
Tues. June 11
Dandy nice warm day. Mon plowed corn & I worked in the garden some. We went
up town in eve & took Arthur & Ruth along. Ruth & I went up too
Mama's. Had a letter from Isa today. Rained in the nite.
Wed. June 12
Rained off & on during the A.M. & was cloudy all the time. Cleared off
in P.M. & was quite nice. We went over & got Arthur & Ruth about
9 A.M. & went too Decorah. Mon got a hair cut. Got home about 1. Mon plowed
corn in P.M. Willard Barth shot & killed himself this P.M.

Quite a nice day. Rather cloudy at times. Mon plowed corn all day. I worked
in the garden some in P.M. & planted some pumpkins out in the corn field
in P.M.
Fri. June 14
Nice day. Quite warm. Mon plowed corn all day. Ruth was here awhile in A.M.
I hoed in the garden some in P.M. Rained in the nite.
Sat. June 15
Quite a nice day. Warm. Mon & I went too Decorah about 11. I got my hair
fixed. Large crowd in town. Jimmie & Morris W. rode down with us. We went
up town in eve. Arthur & Ruth went with us. The Joan of Arc entertained
the fathers of the community at the M.E. Church. Had a nice program & lunch.
We got home about 11.
Sun. June 16
Mon went out on the telephone line early this A.M. Very hot muggy day. Clouded
up at noon & we had a little thunder shower but it cleared off until late
in P.M. it clouded up & looked like we would get a bad storm, but it didn't
then but we got it in the nite. Plenty of thunder, lightning, wind, rain &
some hail. We, Arthur's & Albert's spent the day at Marions.
Had a good dinner. Young chicken etc. Mrs. Chas. Falck & son were drowned
in the creek by Emmons Kern's in the nite. Power went off about 9 P.M.
Mon. June 17
Cloudy & damp in A.M. but it cleared off & was quite nice in P.M. Very
warm in A.M. but cooled off in P.M. Mon went out on the telephone lines in A.M.
Dean & Iona came about 3 & stayed for supper. Arthur & Ruth took
the car & went too P.M. in Decorah & they bro't it home about
8:30 & stayed a few minutes. Artie Q. mowed the lawn this P.M. We have 18
little pigs from 2 mothers.
Tues. June 18
Not very nice day. Sprinkled off & on & at times it rained quite hard.
Much cooler too. Didn't do too much of anything. We went out east &
fixed fence awhile in P.M. & then we went up town a little while.
Wed. June 19
Rained off & on all day & really most of the day. Sometimes quite hard.
Albert Emery came early in A.M. too fix the pump but it was too rainy so he
& Mon went too Ridgeway for some pipe. Albert was here for dinner. We listened
too the Joe Louis - Billy Conn fight in eve. Not much of a fight. Joe knocked
Billy out in the 8th round. Cold nite.
Thurs. June 20
Rained most of the day. Cold. Did brighten up awhile in P.M. & then rained
again. We went up town about 11. I went too L.A.S. Gladys A., Alice W., Dorothea
R. & Genevive Harvey entertained. Very large crowd out. Took in over $54.
Had a swell dinner. We didn't get home very early. Mon was rather tight.
Had 7 more little pigs tonite. 1 sow.
Fri. June 21
Quite a nice day. Much warmer. I washed & ironed. Albert came up early in
A.M. & they fixed the pump. Hjalmer Vine came down at noon & got the
stock hog ($40). Mon went out on the telephone line awhile in P.M.
Sat. June 22
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. Mon, Ruth & I went too Decorah about 9 A.M.
Had our dinner down there & got home about 1:30. Mon went out too plow corn
but he hadn't plowed only a little while until the tractor stopped. He
went too B.O. too see Roy B. about it but Roy couldn't do anything so
he came back home & we went too Decorah & got it fixed. Didn't
take long. We went up town in eve. Olive & I sat in our car & visited.
Sun. June 23
Dandy nice day. Quite warm & quite windy. Vern P. came about 10:30 &
he & Mon went out on the telephone line. They got back here about 2:30.
Arlin came in just a little while & he stayed until about 5. No church today.
Mon. June 24
Very nice day until about 3 P.M. it clouded up. Rained very hard about 4:30.
I washed & ironed. Mon plowed corn until it rained. Artie Q. mowed the lawn
in P.M. Had a hard storm again in the nite.
Tues. June 25
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon did odd jobs in A.M. He mowed weeds around the
brooder house & we went down too Leonard Blaess' & got some chicken
wire & we fixed a pen for the chickens so I could let them out. He plowed
corn in P.M.
Wed. June 26
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed corn all day. Ruth was over awhile in A.M. I worked
on the garden in P.M. Let the chickens out in their pen in P.M. We went up town
a minute at noon & went over too Arthur's a minute after chores in
eve. We had wild strawberries for supper.
Thurs. June 27
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon plowed corn until about 10:30 & then went
over too Arthur's & helped hay the rest of the day. He was home for
supper. I was over at Pearl's a few minutes in A.M. Hoed & weeded
in the garden in P.M. Had a letter from Isa today.
Fri. June 28
Very nice & very warm in A.M. but clouded up about noon & sprinkled
some. Had quite a shower between 1 & 2. Looked like a bad storm. Was cloudy
all P.M. until late in P.M. Mon plowed corn until about 9:30 & then he went
over & helped Arthur hay until the rain. Ruth & I went too Club at Muriel
T's. with Gladys. Didn't go until about 2:30 because it looked so
stormy. Quite a few out. Had a swell lunch. Got cooler after the rain.
Sat. June 29
Quite nice early in A.M. & plenty warm. Clouded up about 10 & we had
a shower. Rained off & on again all the rest of the day & most of the
nite. Mon worked in the field until the rain. We went too Decorah about 11:30.
I got my hair fixed. Large crowd in town. Jimmie W. rode home with us &
then rode up too B.O. in eve with us.
Sun. June 30
Not very nice in A.M. Cloudy & damp but cleared off & was nice in P.M.
Dean, Iona & Mr. Y. came over in P.M. & stayed for supper. No church
today.
Mon. July 1
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon sowed his beans & dragged them &
then plowed corn. I went up in the woods in P.M. & picked some raspberries.
Artie Q. mowed the lawn in P.M. School meeting here in eve. Only Fritz &
Joe came. They put me in as Treasurer & Ruth as Sec. Cool nite.
Tues. July 2
Nice day. Warmer. Mon plowed corn in A.M. helped hay at Arthurs in P.M. I worked
in the garden some in P.M. Ida Noecker & Gladys Reed were down & picked
gooseberries in P.M. We went up town a minute in eve. Arthur & Ruth went
along. We stopped there & had ice cream when we came home.
Wed. July 3
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed corn until about 10 & then went over too Arthurs
& helped hay until about 2. He plowed corn after he got home. Finished up
that field about 4 & then took the tractor up town & got air in the
tires. I went up in the woods & picked raspberries & also worked in
the garden.
Thurs. July 4
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed corn until about 11:30 & then we went too the
Joan of Arc Club picnic at the swimming pool at Decorah. Quite a few out &
we sure had a nice dinner & then ice cream in P.M. Arthur Ruth & Maxine
went with us. Got home about 5. Louis & Lenora Smith came too visit Arthur
& Ruth tonite.
Fri. July 5
Sprinkled off & on in A.M. but was nice in P.M. & warm. Mon plowed corn
in A.M. He went over too Arthur's about 2 & helped hay. We went over
too Dean's awhile in eve.
Sat. July 6
Nice day & plenty warm. Mon helped hay at Arthur's in A.M. Got home
about 12 & we went too Decorah about 12:30. Mama went with us & came
home too supper with us. We took her home in eve. I went up too the M.E. church
awhile in eve to an ice cream Social.
Sun. July 7
Very warm day & we had a hard rain about 4 P.M. Bad looking storm but it
only rained hard & the wind blew quite hard. We were home alone all day.
Mon. July 8
Very hot day. I washed & ironed. Mon took Marion too Decorah in A.M. &
then he did odd jobs in P.M. I picked berries, up in the woods, in P.M. We went
up town in eve. Ruth went with us. We went up too Mama's Ruth & I
& met with Mama & Iona M. too plan our L.A.S. dinner. Arthur & Ruth's
company went away this A.M.
Tues. July 9
Mighty hot day again. Mon plowed corn in A.M. & helped hay at Arthur's
for a while in P.M. He got home about 4 & then went out & plowed corn
until supper time. We went over too Arthur's a minute after chores.
Wed. July 10
Rather cloudy in A.M. Sprinkled off & on but not much. Quite warm. Cooled
off late in P.M. & in eve. Cool nite. Mon plowed corn all day. Glen Rollins
came about 8 A.M. & hauled the bull & a cow too Decorah for us too the
Sale. Verna mowed the lawn in P.M. & I picked berries up in the woods. Got
a letter from Isa. We went up town a few minutes in eve. Arthur Abrahamson rode
home with us. Cow weighed 1200 lbs @ $13.75 & the bull 1830 @ 16.00 292.80.
Commission etc. out $11.52 so that left 446.28.
Thurs. July 11
Dandy nice day. Much cooler. Mon plowed corn. I worked in the garden in P.M.
We went over too Arthur's awhile in eve. The kids came home with us &
then took the car back with them.
Fri. July 12
Dandy nice day. Mon got Billy in & mowed weeds with him all day. I picked
berries in P.M. Arthur & Ruth came over in eve & stayed awhile &
then we took them home.
Sat. July 13
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. We went too Decorah about 9 A.M. I got my hair
fixed & Mon got a hair cut. We got home about 3:30 & then Mon got the
team up & mowed until 5:30. He took Maxine & I up town about 6 &
then came back & did his chores. The Club had an Ice Cream Social on Dorothea
Reid's lawn for the benefit of the cemetry. Had a pretty good turnout.
Beautiful nite. We came home about 11.
Sun. July 14
Not such a nice day. Sprinkled off & on all day & sometimes quite hard.
Mon went over & got Marion before breakfast. They fixed the mower up some
& then we went & got Mama & went too Dean's. Claude's
were there too (Arthur & Ruth went too Decorah). We had a good time &
a good dinner & then stayed for lunch. Got home about 6.
Mon. July 15
Not too nice a day rather cloudy & dark most of the time but it didn't
rain. I started too wash & got my finger in the wringer so Mon had too take
me too the Dr. Took 7 or 8 stitches in it. Got home about 12 & Mon went
over & got Verna & they finished up the washing. Pearl & the other
kids came over after dinner & they did the ironing. Verna stayed until the
supper dishes were done. Arthur & Ruth came over awhile after we got home.
Mon mowed in P.M. Roy & Clyde came over in eve & they changed the wheels
on their & our tractors.
Tues. July 16
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & wasn't so bad although
it sprinkled some about supper time. Verna was here again today. Mon & I
went too Decorah about 10:30 & got back about 1. Had too wait for the Dr.
so we had dinner down town. Arthur came over in P.M. & they got fixed up
for haying & got in 3 loads. Verna led the horse on the hay field. Dean
& Iona were over in eve.
Wed. July 17
Not very nice day. Dark & dreary most of the day although it did brighten
up a little in P.M. Quite warm during the day. Verna was over in A.M. awhile
& then over & got supper. Mon & I went to Decorah about 10:15. Had
too wait again too see the Dr. so we ate dinner down town. Mon helped Arthur
in P.M. after we got home. We went up town in eve & took Arthur & Ruth.
The kids & I went too the M.E. church too a shower for Mr. & Mrs. Harlan
Whitney. We didn't stay long. Got home about 10. Terribly foggy coming
home.
Thurs. July 18
Hot muggy humid day. Looked mighty stormy about 4 P.M. & we got a shower
& then in the eve we had quite a storm. Lots of thunder & lightning
& some hail. Mon went over early in A.M. & got Iona. Ruth, Mama, Iona
M. & I entertained L.A.S. Had a good crowd took in over $46. Verna went
up & helped too. Mon helped Arthur some in P.M. & then they put in a
load of hay here in the barn. Fritz Koenig died about 10 A.M. We went up there
in eve. Gust & Kate were there too.
Fri. July 19
Nice day. Not so hot. Mon went out & spoke for pall bearers for Fritz early
in A.M. & then we went too Decorah. Arthur, Ruth & Maxine went with
us. We got home about 1. Mon helped Arthur harvest in P.M. Verna was here. Dr.
Dalquist is going on a vacation so I'll have too go too Dr. Larsen now
with my hand. Aunt Lissa passed away early this A.M. We stopped there a minute
on our way too Decorah.
Sat. July 20
Nice day. Verna was over & helped early in A.M. & then went home until
supper time. Mon & I went too Decorah too the Dr. (Larsen) about 10:30.
Had dinner down town & then came home. Ed Arnold rode home with us. Mon
helped Arthur harvest in P.M. We went up town in eve. Verna went along with
us. Rained some while we were up there.
Sun. July 21
Dandy nice day. We went & got Arthur about 12 & then up & got Ole
& too B.O. & picked up Alice & Elmer Kimber & went too Decorah
too the service at the Funeral Home for Fritz & then on too B.O. too the
church. Very large crowd out. Military Funeral & the I.O.O.F. took part
too. Mon, Ole & Elmer, Marion, Hjalmer & [Joe?] W. were pall bearers.
Mon. July 22
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon helped at Arthur's until about 10 &
then we got ready & went too Decorah. Had my finger dressed again. Dr. Larsen
took out the stitches & cut off some of the skin that had died. We had dinner
down town & then went down too the Winn. Burial Ass. too Aunt Lissa's
Funeral. Large crowd out. Rev. Weed spoke. Mon was a pall bearer so he rode
too the cemetry with the minister & Marvin drove our car. Olive rode with
us. Ed Arnold rode too Decorah with us. Verna was here in A.M. early & again
at supper time.
Tues. July 23
Not very nice early in A.M. Looked quite stormy & we had a little shower
but cleared off & was quite a nice day. Verna helped. We washed in A.M.
& I ironed in P.M. She went over home in P.M. & came back again at supper
time. Mon helped shock at Arthur's in A.M. & then they bro't
the binder over here in P.M. & started cutting grain. They broke down just
at quitting time.
Wed. July 24
Rather damp & dark in A.M. but cleared off & was quite nice in P.M.
Rather cool. Mon went over too Arthur's in A.M. & shocked. They came
over here about 10:30 & then cut grain here the rest of the day. Ruth &
I went too Decorah about 10:30 & didn't get back until about 2. Verna
was here. Stanley P. was here awhile in A.M. Dean, Iona, Clyde & Edna were
here in eve. Ruth came home with me & she defrosted the refrigerator in
P.M.
Thurs. July 25
Nice day. The men shocked awhile in A.M. & then cut grain the rest of the
day. Mama, Vin, Eunice & the boy & Aunt Eunice were here in P.M. Verna
was here today too. We went up town in eve & then I went with Arthur &
Ruth over too Bertha Benders too see Arlin but he wasn't there. Maxine
was there though. She has gone back too live with him.
Fri. July 26
Dandy nice day. Verna was here again. The men finished cutting our grain in
P.M. Ruth & I went too Decorah about 8:45 & got back about 1. We went
too Club at Violet's in P.M. Gladys A. went with us. We had a baby shower
for [Vivian?] Breitsprecher's baby boy. He got some nice gifts. Quite
a few out & we had a swell lunch.
Sat. July 27
Dandy nice day. The men finished shocking about 2:30 P.M. Verna was here. Arthur,
Ruth & I went too Decorah in eve & Mon stayed at B.O. Large crowd in
the city. We got home about 11.
Sun. July 28
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Verna was here in early A.M. & helped with the
separator & dishes & then went home. We went up too Niagra Cave about
3 P.M. Had a nice ride. Mon went down in the Cave but I didn't. Got home
about 6. Little daughter born to Ida & Mike Noecker tonite.
Mon. July 29
Rather nice in A.M. until about 11. It clouded up then & looked quite stormy
but we didn't get any rain then but we surely did about 1. It looked mighty
bad but it wasn't such a bad storm only plenty of rain. Verna helped until
the dishes & separator were done & then she left until supper time.
I washed & ironed. Mon helped thresh at Art Walter's until the rain.
Arthur was here awhile in P.M. Mon went up town awhile in P.M.
Tues. July 30
Dandy nice day. Verna was over & did up the dishes & separator &
then went home. Mon & I went too Decorah about 10:30. I went to the Dr.
for the last time, I hope. Got my hair fixed. Got home about 6. Pearl &
the kids were over in eve.
Wed. July 31
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon & I went over too Arthurs awhile in A.M.
He went too Art W's threshing in P.M. They finished up there. I went up
in the woods & picked black berries. Harry Q. was here in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 1
Rather a dark dreary day. Started too rain about 1:30 & rained off &
on the rest of the P.M. but not hard. Threshed at Roy's until it rained.
I was over there helping a little. Ruth had the car & went too Decorah for
the day. She had a dental date. Arthur bro't the car home after chores
& then we took him home & went on up town a little while.
Fri. Aug. 2
Nice day. Quite warm. Arthur was over awhile in A.M. We went threshing at Roy's
in P.M. They finished up but it was quite late. Chas. & Helen P. came just
as Mon finished milking & they stayed until about 9:30. We went as far as
the Catholic Church too show them the way too Cresco.
Sat. Aug. 3
Looked quite rainy at times & still it wasn't too bad a day. Rained
a little in P.M. & then cleared off again. Mon went too Howard's too
thresh early in A.M. & then the machine broke down so they were over there
all day. Didn't thresh until late in P.M. Ruth & I went too Decorah
early in A.M. too get things for threshing as we expected them in P.M. but didn't
get them. Bernice came over in P.M. but we all just sat & visited. We went
up town in eve.
Sun. Aug. 4
Dandy nice day. We threshed in A.M. Ruth & Bernice helped me. Got through
just at noon. They threshed at Harry's in P.M.
Mon. Aug. 5
Rather cloudy early in A.M. & started too rain about 10:30 & rained
off & on until late in P.M. it cleared off & was quite nice. We went
over too Arthur's early in A.M. too thresh. Got in just about an hours
threshing before it rained. We came home & had our dinner & then went
too Decorah. Very large crowd in town.
Tues. Aug. 6
Dandy nice day. We were at Arthur's all day threshing. They finished about
5:30. That's the last of our rig's threshing. [Levi?] Quandahl bought
Fred Walter's threshing rig so he did our threshing. Verna mowed the lawn
this A.M.
Wed. Aug. 7
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & looked quite rainy. Sprinkled some
off & on. Looked like a bad storm in eve but it just rained a little. I
washed & ironed. Mon went up too Ole's where they were threshing in
A.M. & then on up too B.O. He took some oats too Decorah in P.M. & had
them hulled. Arthur was here a minute in P.M.
Thurs. Aug. 8
Rather cloudy most of A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Mon went out
on the telephone line in A.M. & then we went over too Arthur's a minute.
Mon took a grist too Decorah in P.M. He was only gone a little over an hour.
We had quite a shower about 9 P.M.
Fri. Aug. 9
Looked quite rainy at times but it only sprinkled a few drops. Sun shone quite
a lot too. Very windy & cool. Mon did odd jobs in A.M. We went over too
Dean's in P.M. & helped thresh. They finished about 6. Mary Willson
was there helping Iona too. We went over too Arthur's a minute after chores.
Sat. Aug. 10
Quite a nice day but chilly. Mon helped Ray Henning thresh. They finished about
4 P.M. I went too Decorah with Arthur & Ruth about 10. We went up &
got Mama & took her too. Got back too Arthur's about 2 & had lunch
there & then Arthur bro't Mama & I home & she stayed here
until after supper. Arthur & Ruth went up town with us in eve. Our part
of the W.S.C.S. had a food sale at Fred Glice's in eve. Had some nice
things. We got home a little after 10. Cold nite.
Sun. Aug. 11
45º this morn. Nice day but cool. Mon took Arthur, Ruth & I too church
in A.M. New presiding elder preached. He was good. After church Mon & I
went over too Howard's. Darlene's birthday & all of the folks
but Richard's were there & we had a picnic dinner & then stayed
& had supper there too. Had lots of good things too eat. Cold nite. Had
a new little calf today.
Mon. Aug. 12
42º this morn. Dr. K. was here about 6 A.M. too test the cattle. Dandy
nice day. Warmed up some. I washed & ironed. Mon went over too Arthur's
early in A.M. & then he came home & mowed hay all A.M. Arthur came over
in P.M. & we put the hay in the barn. Cool nite again.
Tues. Aug. 13
Dandy nice day. Warmer. Mon mowed in A.M. & Arthur was over in P.M. &
we put hay in the barn.
Wed. Aug. 14
Not very nice day. Dark & damp & chilly. We went too Decorah about 10.
I got my hair fixed & Mon got a hair cut. Saw Dean & Iona & Philip
down town.
Thurs. Aug. 15
Not so nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was nice the rest of the day.
We put up a load of hay that was down, just after dinner & then Mon took
me up too Zoa's too a little party for Myrtle Whitbeck who is back here
from Cal. for a visit. Had a nice time & a nice lunch. Arthur, Ruth &
I went too the Fair in eve. Mon went too B.O. They had a Centennial Paegent
for the Fair tonite & it was good. Sprinkled a drop or two down there but
rained quite hard up here. We went too B.O. & got Mon on our way home.
Fri. Aug. 16
Very hot day. Mon mowed some in A.M. & Arthur came over in P.M. & we
put it in the barn. The last of our haying. Mon went up town awhile when he
took Arthur home. Verna & Sonny came over late in P.M. too mow the lawn
& they were here for supper. Had a hard storm about 9:30. Hard wind &
lots of rain, thunder & lightning.
Sat. Aug. 17
Nice day but plenty warm. Mon went over & got Arthur & Ruth about 9
& we all went too Cresco & spent some time & then went on too Decorah.
Had dinner down there & then came home. Did up the chores up early &
then we all went back too Decorah too the Fair. Clouded up about 9 & looked
mighty stormy. We came home about 11 & storm struck when we were up by Aunt
Lissa's & did it ever rain. We stopped in Arthur Smiths drive way
for a while. It was raining so hard & the wind was terrible. Some hail.
A tree blew down in the front yard. Our north door had blown open & our
house was full of water. Something went wrong with the car going down but we
got home O.K. Terrible storm at Mankato & Wells Minn.
Sun. Aug. 18
Quite a nice day but much cooler. Mon took the car up too Roy Broghammers about
9 & left it too be fixed. Roy bro't him home about 12:30. Dell &
Mettie were here a little while late in P.M. Little daughter born to Jeanne
& Johnnie Whalen very early this A.M.
Mon. Aug. 19
Quite a nice day but cool. I washed & ironed. Mon did odd jobs. Cleaned
up the tree that blew down in the front yard & other stuff that was messed
around.
Tues. Aug. 20
Nice day & a little warmer. I did odd jobs in A.M. & canned peaches
& plums in P.M. Mon helped hay at Arthur's in P.M. He was over &
helped Howard shingle a while in A.M. Pearl was here awhile in A.M. Dana came
about 4 P.M. & he was plenty tight. Mon got home about 5:30. Dana went too
sleep in his car then & stayed here until Mon finished chores & then
he took Dana too B.O.

Nice day. Mon went over too Arthurs about 9 A.M. too help hay. He got home about
4. I canned some apples. Howard was over in eve. Little daughter born too Mr.
& Mrs. Glen Clark this morn.

Nice day. Some warmer. Mon went too B.O. early in A.M. with Howard's &
he went over too Marion's in P.M. I went too L.A.S. with Bernice about
10:30. She, Maxine, Lucile Ottaway, & Mrs. Gjetly entertained. Had a good
dinner & a good crowd.
Fri. Aug. 23
Nice day. Mon did odd jobs. Verna mowed the lawn in A.M. I went too Decorah
in P.M. with Pearl & the kids. I got a pair of every day shoes. $5.75.

Nice day. Didn't do much of anything. Went up town in eve with Roy's.

Dandy nice day. We were home all day. Garner Osborn was here a few minutes in
P.M. Hadn't seen him for a long while.
Mon. Aug. 26
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went up too Gust's in A.M. &
got the manure spreader. He went over too Arthur's a minute in P.M. &
then cut a jag of corn & hauled out some manure. He went up town in eve
with Howard. I had a letter from Isa today. Our school started today with Maxine
as teacher.
Tues. Aug. 27
Rather cloudy early in A.M. & then it cleared off & was quite nice until
late in P.M. it clouded up again & rained. Mon hauled manure all day. Alberta
came down & got me about 8 A.M. & we went too Ruth Casterton & Donald
(Jiggs) Sexton's wedding at the Catholic Church. Very nice wedding but
not a very large crowd. There was a shower & dance for them at Matter's

minutes at noon. Mon went up town in eve with Roy. Not quite so cold tonite.

Nice day. Mon got a load of corn & hauled out manure in A.M. & then
Roy took a grist too Decorah for him in P.M. & he went along. I rode over
too Arthur's with them & then Louie took Ruth & I up too Dorothy
Emmon's & we went too Club at Evelyn Van Vliets with Lettie Wright
& then she bro't us both home. Quite a few out too Club. Had a grand
lunch. Had a stork shower for Bernice Newhouse. Mon went too B.O. in eve with
Art W. too a chiravari on Ruth & "Jiggs" Sexton.

Nice day. Mon got corn & hauled out manure. We went up town in eve with
Roy's.

Nice day. Dean & Iona came about 12:15 & spent the rest of the day with
us. Dean took us for a ride in P.M. They stayed for supper. Mr. Y. was in Winona.

Mon. Sept. 2
About 36º this morn with a light frost in low places. Rather cloudy at
times & sprinkled a little but it cleared off in P.M. & was quite nice
although plenty cool. I washed & ironed. Mon did odd jobs. Not quite so
cold tonite. Coldest Labor Day on record.
Tues. Sept. 3
Somewhat warmer day & nice. Mon got corn & hauled manure. I canned most
of the day. Arthur & Ruth were here a few minutes in A.M.
Wed. Sept. 4
Nice day. Quite warm but windy. Mon got corn & hauled out manure in A.M.
He drove the tractor up town in P.M. I went up too Mama's in P.M. with
Pearl. She went on too Mabel. Got a letter from Isa today.
Thurs. Sept. 5
Quite nice in A.M. & warm. Clouded up in P.M. Looked like a very bad storm
about 4 but it didn't storm until about 4:30 & then it sure did pour
down & kept it up until in the nite. Got dark at 4 & didn't get
light again. Had the light on from then. The power went off about 5:45 so we
had too use the lamp & gas lantern. Mon just did the milking & no other
chores. We dug the potatoes today. Didn't have too many. About 5 inches
of rain fell in a pail that was on the step.
Fri. Sept. 6
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon did odd jobs in A.M. He & Vern went out
on the telephone line in P.M. He bro't the car home when he came. We went
over too Arthur's in eve & they were not at home so we went on over
too Dean's & they were not at home but they were at Leo Willson's
& stopped us as we came back so we stayed there. Lelia & Stanley were
there too. Had a good time & nice lunch. Got home about 12:15.
Sat. Sept. 7
Not very nice day. Rained almost all day & sometimes quite hard. Mon got
a jag of corn in A.M. early & then we went too Decorah about 10:30. Large
crowd in town. We got 3 crates of pears $2.24 each & a crate of peaches
too can. Went up town in eve. Olive was up there & we went & spent the
eve with Alberta at the filling station.

Rained all A.M. & part of P.M. & eve. The sun did shine awhile in P.M.
We went over too Arthur's awhile in P.M. Quite cool in A.M. but warmed
up in P.M.
Mon. Sept. 9
Warm day. Rather cloudy early in A.M. but brightened up later & was quite
nice until late in P.M. it clouded up again. Had quite a storm again about 7.
Mon went over too Marions in A.M. awhile & then Marion came home too dinner
with him & stayed until about 4:30.
Tues. Sept. 10
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Cooler. Marion
came over & went too Decorah with us about 9. I got a permanent. Quite a
crowd in town. We got home about 4:30.
Wed. Sept. 11
Quite a nice day. Mon went over & got Marion early in A.M. & they went
over too the [Pierce?] school & hooked up their telephone & then went
on too Prosper. Marion came home with Mon & stayed until after 5. I washed
& ironed. Dean & Iona were here awhile in P.M. Mon & Marion fixed
fence around the garden so we could put the cows in the hay field. We went over
too Arthur's awhile in eve. Cool nite.
Thurs. Sept. 12
Nice day but cool. Mon was over too Dave's all A.M. helping fix their
pump. I canned 2 crates of pears in P.M. Got 15 qts. We went up town in eve.

Fri. Sept. 13
Dandy nice day. Not too cool. Mon went up town & got Mama & Aunt Eunice
& they came down & spent the day with us. Mon, Arthur & Ruth went
too Decorah about 9:30 & they got home about 2:30. Mon got a load of corn
& then went up town a little while. We took the folks home about 8 &
then stopped at Arthur's a little while on our way home. The directors
of the school had a meeting there.
Sat. Sept. 14
Quite a nice day. We went too Decorah about 11. Mama & Aunt Eunice went
with us. Large crowd in town. I got a new dress ([fuchia? color?]) $20.39. The
folks came home too supper with us & then went up town in eve. I went over
too Josie's awhile.
Sun. Sept. 15
Beautiful day. Just like summer. Mon & I went over too Locust too church
this morning. Dean was confirmed & baptized at their church. Very large
crowd out too church. We went too Deans for dinner. Came home about 4. We got
a jag of corn after we got home. Word came today that Red Price had passed away
in Japan.
Mon. Sept. 16
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went over early in A.M. & got Dean
too help him. They cleaned out the hog house & shed & got corn &
a lot of other things. Dean took the car home with him after supper. Isa got
back from California this noon.
Tues. Sept. 17
Dandy nice day. Dean came back today too help. Iona came with him. Mama, Isa
& Aunt Eunice came too. Dean went over & got Marion & they started
putting the siding on the cow barn. Arthur & Ruth were here for dinner too.
Aunt Eunice went over too Dave's in P.M. & stayed over there for supper.
Dean took the car again tonite & took the whole family home. Isa looks just
fine. Reardon's came up in A.M. & culled out the hens. 44 hens weighed
147 lbs. @ .22¢ & bro't $32.34 2 roosters weighed 10 lbs. @ .17¢
& bro't 1.70.
Wed. Sept. 18
Dandy nice day. Dean & Marion were here again today. They nearly finished
putting on the siding. We took them home after supper.
Thurs. Sept. 19
Not very nice day. Started too sprinkle about 11 & kept it up off &
on all day. Sometimes quite hard. Rained during the nite too. Mon went over
to Marion's awhile in A.M. He took Bernice, Lizzie & I too L.A.S.
about 11:15. Florence & Aunt Alice, Mrs. Fred Kneeskern & Rosalie entertained.

Fri. Sept. 20
Our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Beautiful day. Mon got a jag of corn early in
A.M. & then we went too Decorah about 11. Arthur & Dave went with us.
I got my hair fixed. Mon got a hair cut. We got home about 4:30. Olive &
Alberta had an Anniversary Party at the Hall for us in eve. About 200 there.
Mock Wedding which was so funny & a good program. Arthur's & Dean's
had such a beautiful cake made for us & Dave & Vin had a pretty cake
made too. We rec'd $74.25. Everything was so nice. Mon gave me a beautiful
corsage. Arthur's went with us. We got home about 12.
Sat. Sept. 21
Dandy nice day. We took some young chickens up too Mama's early in A.M.
& I stayed too help pick them. We came home & Mon got a jag of corn
& then we went too Decorah. Isa went with us & then she came home too
supper with us. We went up town in eve. Verna went with us too. Marion rode
home with us.

Quite nice early in A.M. but clouded up about 10:30 & started too sprinkle.
Rained quite hard most of the P.M. & on into the eve. We went up too Mama's
about 11. Arthur's went with us. Deans & Mr. Y., & Claudes were
there. Had a good dinner & a good time. Got colder late in P.M.
Mon. Sept. 23
Quite a nice day but cool. Mon went over & got Dean early in A.M. &
they took care of the little pigs - put rings in their noses, finished
putting the siding on the barn, got corn, cleaned out the hog house & shed
& did other odd jobs. We took Dean home about 5. I canned tomatoes in P.M.
Arthur had the car in eve & went too Decorah.

About 30º this morn. Not so nice in A.M. but brightened up some later in
the day. Had some frost but did very little damage. Arthur's & us
went too Decorah awhile in P.M. Little son born too Bernice & Maynard Newhouse
very early this A.M.

Quite a nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon hauled manure & did a lot of
odd jobs.
Thurs. Sept. 26
Very nice in A.M. Quite warm. Clouded up in P.M. about 4 & we had quite
an electrical storm. Rained then until in eve. Cleared off in eve. Mon hauled
up a jag of corn & did odd jobs in A.M. He was out on the telephone line
in P.M. We went up town in eve. I went up too Mama's. Olive was there
too. Marvin went too Des Moines today. He has enlisted in the Marines &
went for his physical & if he passes will go right on too San Diego.
Fri. Sept. 27
Quite warm in A.M. but rather dark & cloudy all day. Got cooler in P.M.
Mon went down too Vern Porter's in A.M. He took Ruth & I too B.O.
in P.M. & she down on from there too Club at Miriam's. Bernice rode
up town & back with us. We took Maude home after Club. Had a swell lunch
at Club but not so many out.

Not very nice day. Sprinkled off & on all day & was quite cool. Mon
doesn't feel very good. He has a bad cold. He got a jag of corn in A.M.
& then we went up & got Isa & went too Decorah. She came home too
supper with us & then we took her home after chores but didn't stop
up town only for a minute.

30º. Quite a nice day but cool. Frost on the grass this A.M. We were home
all day. Verna mowed the lawn in A.M. Howard Q. was here awhile in P.M. Mon
feels a little better today.

About 28º this morn with quite a frost on the grass. Dandy nice day. Warmed
up quite a lot. I washed & ironed & gathered up the walnuts & shucked
them in P.M. Mon helped fill silo at Ludvigs all day. May Little died tonite.
Tues. Oct. 1
30º this morning. Heaviest frost yet. Dandy nice day. Warmed up quite a
little. We went over too Arthur's early in A.M. for a few minutes. Mon
did odd jobs in A.M. & then we went out & picked a jag of corn in P.M.
for the hogs. First we have picked for them. We went over too Dean's &
spent the eve. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Barth were there too. They hauled &
spread some lime for us in P.M.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon helped Arthur shock corn until in P.M. Lester
& Loyal came by car early this A.M. They all came down here about 10 A.M.
& then I went too Decorah with them. Got home about 4:30. Loyal was here
awhile in eve again.

Dandy nice day but very windy. Clouded up late in P.M. & we had quite a
severe electrical storm about 7 P.M. but it didn't last long & we
got only a very little rain. Mon & I were at Roy's in A.M. They filled
silo & finished about 4. I came home about 1 & Ruth & I went too
May Little's funeral. Very large crowd. Mon & I went up town a little
while in eve. Bernard Wanless & Phyliss Dahlen were married this eve.

Beautiful day. Nice & warm. Mon helped Arthur shock corn in A.M. & we
picked a jag of corn in P.M.

Dandy nice day. We went too Decorah about 11. Arthur went with us. I got my
hair fixed. Large crowd in town. We went up town in eve awhile. I went up too
Mama's awhile too.

Quite nice early in A.M. but clouded up about 11 & rained some in P.M. &
was dark & got cooler late in P.M. Mon went too Decorah early in A.M. with
Roy too help him bring his tractor home. He had had it down there for an overhauling.
Arthur, Ruth, Dave, Lizzie & I went over too Maxine & Arlin's
& spent the day. Had a good dinner & a nice time.

Beautiful nice warm day. Arthur cut corn for us. Finished about the middle of
P.M. Mon went & got Dean about 9:30 & he came & helped shock corn.
He took the car home.
Tues. Oct. 8
Dandy nice warm day. Clouded up & looked rainy in P.M. but it didn't
rain. Dean & Iona came over early in A.M. & Mon & Dean finished
shocking the corn about noon. Mon took the kids home after dinner & then
we got a load of corn in P.M. Donnie Baker was here all day making our cupboards.
Little son born too Mary & Leo Willson tonite.
Wed. Oct. 9
Rather cloudy at times but warm. Dean came over early this A.M. (Mon went &
got him) & they worked on the telephone line, building a new one from Joe
Wilhelms up too Ludvigs. Donnie was here all day. He painted the cupboards &
the tractor shed. Albert & Florence came & got us in eve & we girls
stopped at Elsie's too meet with the others & make out our menu for
the L.A.S. Sale & dinner the men went on up town. Got home about 12. Dean
took our car home with him. Had a new little calf today.
Thurs. Oct. 10
Not very nice day. Started too rain about 9 A.M. & kept it up all day &
eve. Some times it rained quite hard. The wind switched around too the north
about 6 P.M. & got much cooler. Dean came early in A.M. & he & Mon
went out on the telephone line but the rain stopped their work. Mama, Isa &
Loyal came about 9 & stayed until about 2:30. They took Dean home.

25º this morn. Hard freeze. Snowed some early in A.M. Wasn't so nice
until later in P.M. it cleared off & was quite nice but cool. Mon went over
& got Marion early in A.M. & we went too Decorah. Arthur & Ruth
went along too. We came home about 4. Went up town in eve. I went up too Mama's
awhile. Jimmie W. rode home with us. Joyce Smith & Wayne Headington were
married this eve at 8 at her home. Art & Ruth were there. Cool nite.

Nice bright day but cool. Mon took Ruth, Bernice & I too church. Rev. &
Mrs. Arnold are our new preachers living in B.O. He spoke this A.M. & was
pretty good.

Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off late in A.M. & was very nice
the rest of the day. Mon cut the beans. He broke the mower at noon & we
went too Decorah right after dinner & got the repairs. I got a set of silver
ware with the money we rec'd at our Anniversary party. Mon took me up
too Inez W's. in eve too meet with Florence, Elsie, Inez & Violet
about the menu for the L.A.S. sale dinner. Truman took the O.P.A. ceiling price
off meat etc. this eve.
Tues. Oct. 15
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed. Mon went & got Dean early
in A.M. Loyal came down about 9. They picked a load of corn in A.M. Loyal went
back too B.O. after dinner. Mon & Dean raked & piled up beans in P.M.
It clouded up about 6 & got cooler & rained some. Had quite an electrical
storm too. Last game of the World Series at St. Louis. Cardinals won from the
Red Sox.

Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a very nice day. Dean came
over early in A.M. & he & Mon worked all day building the new telephone
line from Joe Wilhelm's up too Ludvigs. Lester's & Mama came
down about 11:30. Lester & Loyal went away in P.M. but Mama & Isa stayed
here. They went home about 5. Dean took the car home with him again.
Thurs. Oct. 17
Not such a very nice day. Dark & dreary looking. Dean came over & the
men worked at the telephone line all day & finished it up. Dean took the
car home with him again tonite. Roy took Bernice, Lizzie & I too L.A.S.
Elsie S., Margaret W., Nora & Pauline Lange entertained. Had a swell dinner
& a good crowd. Had another little calf today.

Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a grand day. Dean came over
early & he & Mon went hunting for a telephone for Marion. They found
one & got it installed for him before dinner. He came home too dinner with
them & then they all went out & got a load of corn in P.M. Mon &
I took them both home about 4:30. We went over too Arthur's awhile in
eve. Roger & Virginia was there. Lester's left B.O. for their new
home in Missouri today.

Dean early in A.M. & they finished piling up the beans. They went over &
got Arthur at noon & went up too Gust's & bought some things.
We took Dean home a little after 4. Iona & Philip were at Leo's so
we left Dean there. I went in too see the new baby. He is a dandy nice baby.
Tues. Oct. 22
Beautiful day. Nice & warm. Mon & Arthur went up too Gust's early
in A.M. & got his binder which they bought. They took it over too Arthur's
& put it in the shed. Mon got back home about 12. He went up town awhile
in P.M. We went up town in eve too a Shower for Joyce & Wayne Headington
at the Hall. Arthur & Ruth went too. Large crowd. Good program. They got
so many nice presents. We got home about 11:30.
Wed. Oct. 23
Not so nice in A.M. Rather dark & cloudy most of the time but warm. Very
nice in P.M. Arthur was here most of A.M. waiting for them too bring the corn
picker. He went home about 11 & they came with it about 12:20. Worked with
it & got it set up ready too go about 2 & they picked one load &
then Klinker's man went home. I went out with Mon & Arthur when they
got the second load. It sure works faster than we could by hand. Arthur sold
some hogs just after dinner & then he came right back over here.
Thurs. Oct. 24
Started too rain about 4 A.M. & we had quite an electrical storm from then
on until about 6:30. Rained off & on most of the day. Sometimes quite hard.
It cleared off late in P.M. Cooler today. Arthur's & us went too Decorah
about 11. Large crowd in town. We got home about 3:30. The men paid for the
picker $731.68. We went up town in eve. Marion rode up & back with us. Raymond
Henning & Gladys Reed were married at the Little Brown Church today.
Fri. Oct. 25
Rather dark & dreary most of the day. Cool. Mon went too B.O. in A.M. &
put in a telephone for Vin Kimber's. He took Ruth & I too B.O. in
P.M. & then Ruth drove on up too Margaret Ward's too Club. Mama went
along & Mrs. K. & Virginia rode back with us. Quite a few out. Had a
"Shower" for Ruth & she got such nice things.
Sat. Oct. 26
Quite a nice day but cool. Mon plowed all day. We went up town in eve. Ruby
H. said she hadn't seen Mama all day so about 10 Mon & I went up there
& she was on the floor & unable too get up & had been that way all
day, so we broke the door in & got her in bed then Mon went down town &
sent Claude home for Olive. After she came we had Dr. Larson as Dr. D. was out
of town. He said she might have had a light stroke or a clot on the brain. Claude
& Mon went home about 12 & we girls stayed. Dean & Iona were up
too see Mama & Ruby & Ray H. came in when they came up from town.
Sun. Oct. 27
Not too nice a day but cleared off late in P.M. & was quite nice then &
in eve. Cool in A.M. but warmed up when it cleared off. Mama is the same. No
pain. Dr. D. came up after dinner & he said we could bring her home with
us so we bro't her down here about 4 P.M. Claude & Olive helped. She
had lots of company at her home & Babe & Annie were down in eve too
see her. Dean got our tractor today too do some plowing.
Mon. Oct. 28
Not so nice in A.M. Sprinkled off & on. Brighter in P.M. Quite warm. Had
quite a bit of thunder & lightning in eve & some rain. Arthur was over
in A.M. & helped Mon. Mon hauled out manure & did odd jobs in P.M. Olive,
Marvin & Leonard came over in eve & then Mon & the boys went up
town a little while. Pearl & her kids, May & Snookie, Babe, Nora, Irene
& her children were here in eve. Mama can't talk quite as well tonite
or help herself as well. They had a chiravari for Ray & Gladys tonite. Little
son born too Gene & Clara McCabe this A.M.
Tues. Oct. 29
Not too bad a day. Rather nasty early in A.M. but was quite nice the rest of
the day. Quite warm. Olive & Claude came about 9. Mon & I went too Decorah
about 10 & got back about 12:30. Claude & Olive went up town a little
while in P.M. & then Claude went home & Olive stayed. Bernice was here
awhile in P.M. Dr. D. was up in eve. Walt & Wilma were down awhile too.
Got cooler in the nite.

Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off about noon & was quite nice. Cooler.
Mon went up town awhile in A.M. & then he helped Roy fix fence between us
in P.M. Claude came up at noon & Olive went home with him. Dean, Iona, Arthur
& Ruth were here at noon. Lizzie C., Lena & Clifford were here in P.M.
Thurs. Oct. 31
Dean bro't the tractor home this A.M. Beautiful day. Olive came up early
in A.M. & we washed & ironed. Dean & Philip & Arthur were here
in A.M. Mon, Claude, Dean & Philip went out & picked a load of corn
with the picker early in A.M. They all went home about 10:30. Arthur came over
in P.M. & he & Mon picked corn all P.M. Zoa, Ern, Margaret W., Inez
W., Josie, Joyce & Elsie were here during the day. Olive stayed all nite.
Mama wasn't at all good during the nite. She was so sick too her stomach.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. Nasty
day. Not so cold though but it did get some cooler in eve. Mama wasn't
very well all day. Dr. was here at noon. Claude was up awhile. Mon went too
B.O. awhile in P.M. Arthur was over awhile early in A.M. Rev. & Mrs. Arnold
were here about supper time.

Not such a nice day, but not too bad. Rather misty & damp at times. Mon
went over too Arthurs in A.M. & then Arthur came home with him awhile. Arthur
bought Gust's car & he & Mon went up after dinner & got it.
Mon went on up town awhile. Claude came up after dinner & he stayed until
after supper & then Olive went home with him. Gladys A. was here after supper.

Not too nice a day & still rather nice at times. Cooler. Mon went too B.O.
for a few minutes about 10. Dr. came up about 10. He said Mother was much improved.
Ruth & Arthur came over after dinner & then Babe & Annie, Dell &
Mettie, Maude & Carl, Olive & Marvin came. Olive stayed then all nite.
Earl, Wilma, Bonnie, [Larry?] & another woman came just as we were going
too eat supper. Dean & Iona came over later.

About 22º & the ground was frozen some. Dandy nice day though. Warmed
up quite a little. Cooled off in eve again. We washed & ironed. Mon went
too Decorah in A.M. with Arthur. Pearl was over in eve. Got a letter from Isa
today also a card.
Tues. Nov. 5
About 22º again this morn but was a dandy nice day again. Arthur came over
in A.M. & the men picked corn all day. We went up town at noon too vote.
Ruth went along too. Marion rode back from B.O. with us & watched them pick
corn awhile. Claude came after Olive in P.M. Cool nite again.

About 22º again this morn but everything was frozen harder. Warmed up during
the day. Very nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & was dark & dreary.
Arthur came over early in A.M. & they picked corn here & then they went
over there & picked in P.M. Ruth came over early in A.M. & helped awhile.
Dean & Iona came & got the old hens in A.M. Pearl was here too. Rev.
& Mrs. Arnold, Florence & Aunt Alice were here in P.M. Olive was up
awhile in eve. It rained in eve & most of the nite I guess. Mama had a good

Not very nice day. Cloudy & damp. Arthur & Roger came over in A.M. &
helped get the young cattle in the barn. Glen Rollins came about 1:30 &
hauled them too Decorah. Mon went up town awhile in P.M. Mama was quite sick
too her stomach & miserable until about 9:30 then she rested good the rest

Not very nice day. Started too rain about 2:30 & then it turned too snow
& snowed quite a little. First snow of the season. Olive came up about 10
& Mon & I went too Decorah. Took 39 young roosters down. They weighed
148 lbs. @ .21¢ & bro't $31.08. I got my hair fixed. We came
home about 4. Olive stayed all nite. Mama was sick again until about 10:30 &
from then on she didn't put in a very good nite. Mon went up town in eve.
Sun. Nov. 10
Not very nice day. Rather chilly & dark. Mother wasn't very good all
day. So tired & her heart hurt her. Claude, Marvin, Leonard, Mettie, Dell
& Lizzie were here in P.M. Mama had a better nite.
Mon. Nov. 11
Not very nice day. Cloudy & dark most of the day & damp at times. The
sun did shine a little. Mon went over & got Dean about 9:30 & they filled
in the cellar way, cleaned the hen house & hauled out manure. Dean took
the car home with him. Dr. was here about 9 A.M. Mama rested good all day &
nite but she is so weak. Dr. said her heart is very irregular.
Tues. Nov. 12
20º this morn. Froze hard. Dandy nice day. We washed & ironed. Mon
worked at the hen house most of the A.M. Dean came over in P.M. & they cleaned
out the calf pen & hauled out manure. Mon took him home about 4:30. Claude
& Marvin came up in eve & Olive went home with them. Mama is just about
the same. She rested good all nite. Arthur & Ruth were over awhile at noon.
Wed. Nov. 13
20º this morn. Froze hard. Dandy nice day. Mon did odd jobs in A.M. &
plowed in P.M. Dr. was up in P.M. & he said Mama's heart was stronger.
Babe, Nora & Irene were here awhile in P.M.
Thurs. Nov. 14
Bill Thompson passed away this A.M. 22º this morn. Froze again. Warmed
up during the day & was a dandy nice day. Olive came up early in A.M. I
went up too the L.A.S. dinner & sale with Roy's about 11. I helped
Albert E. sell tickets. Had my dinner then & Arthur S. bro't me home
about 1:30. Bud & Flora Bucknell were here a few minutes in P.M. Mon plowed
all day. Arthur, Ruth, Roger & Virginia & Howard W. were here a little
while after supper. Mon went up town a few minutes after chores.
Fri. Nov. 15
Not very nice day. Rather dark. Sun did shine just a little. Mon plowed all
day & finished that piece. Marvin came up after Olive about 8 A.M. The Rev.
Arnold's & Mrs. Emmons were here in P.M. & in eve. Raymond, Ruby
& the girls & Annie, Babe & Archie, Florence, Albert & Norris
were here. It rained quite hard in the nite & got much cooler. Howard had
bought the barn at the Lutheran parsonage & they moved it down today.
Sat. Nov. 16
Not very nice early in A.M. Rained & snowed & was quite windy. Cleared
off some in P.M. & got much colder about 3:30. Started too freeze &
froze hard at nite & the wind blew hard from the N.W. It went down some
in the nite. Mon went out on the telephone line in A.M. & then he went &
got Marion & bro't him over here for dinner. They went too Decorah
in P.M. Mon got a new overcoat & a new hat. Olive & Marvin were here
awhile in eve.
Sun. Nov. 17
12º this morn. Everything froze up but it warmed up during the day enough
too get quite sticky. Froze hard again at nite. Nice bright day. Marvin bro't
Olive over about 10 & then Claude came & got her in eve. Mon went over
too Arthur's & got the picker in A.M. & tried too pick corn but
it didn't go very good. Too sticky. Arthur came over in P.M. & they
picked out a couple of jags but it didn't go good. Alberta & Roy were
here awhile in eve. Wind got into the south at nite & blew hard & chilly.
Mon. Nov. 18
Terribly windy day. Chilly south wind. Cool but it thawed quite a little. Arthur
came over & they picked corn in A.M. & tried it in P.M. but it didn't
go so good so Mon went too Decorah & got chains for our tractor. Marvin
bro't Olive up in eve.
Tues. Nov. 19
Quite a nice day only rather windy. Mon was at Arthur's all day picking
corn. Olive & I washed. The power was off from 10 until 11 so that slowed
us up some. We ironed in P.M. Aunt Eunice came at noon. She went over too Lizzie's
about 4. Kate R. & Ruth K. were here in P.M.
Wed. Nov. 20
Dandy nice day. Mon picked corn at Arthurs until about 2. He came home then
& went out on the telephone line the rest of the P.M. Aunt Eunice came over
& spent the day & then went back too Lizzie's & spent the
nite. Claude came & got Olive at noon. Dean, Iona & Philip were over
& spent the eve. Mama was quite sick all nite so neither of us got any rest
from 12 on.
Thurs. Nov. 21
Not very nice day. Dark & dreary in A.M. early & then it started too
rain & rained quite hard at times. Wind whipped around into the north about
12 & it got much colder. Snowed some in P.M. & the wind blew hard &
cold. Cleared off at nite & was nice but cold & windy. Mon went over
too Arthur's early in A.M. & got the picker. He took Aunt Eunice too
B.O. about 11:30 & she took the bus for home. Dr. came up about 2 &
then he sent the ambulance up about 4 & took mama too the Hospital where
she could get better care. Arthur came over in eve & helped us put the pullets
in the hen house. Cold nite.
Fri. Nov. 22
5º about this morn. Chilly, windy day. Mon worked most of the day fixing
up the house for winter. He put on paper on the doors & put banking around
the house. The sun shone part of the time but it was blustery at times too.
Warmed up some in the nite.
Sat. Nov. 23
Not so cold today but chilly. Rained some in A.M. but cleared off about noon
& was some warmer. We went too Decorah about 10. Bernice went with us. I
got my hair fixed & Mon got a hair cut. We went down too the Hospital when
we got too town too see Mama & went down again before we came home. She
is about the same. We went up town awhile in eve.
Sun. Nov. 24
Much warmer & rained in A.M. Got much colder about 3 P.M. We went over too
Marion's & spent the day. Albert's & Vinis were there. We
celebrated Marion's Birthday. (Rather late) Had a swell dinner. Cold &
windy at nite. Arthur & Ruth's first Wedding Anniversary.
Mon. Nov. 25
15º this morn. Warmed up during the day & was quite nice. I washed
& ironed. Arthur came over & he & Mon picked corn all day. Ruth
& Roger came over after Arthur about 4:30.
Tues. Nov. 26
Nice day. Rather cool. Arthur was here helping pick corn all day. Mon &
I went down too the Hospital too see Mama in eve. We stayed there until about
9 & then stopped at the last Show when we got back up town. "Do You
Love Me" Pretty good.
Wed. Nov. 27
Nice day. Mon was at Arthurs all day picking corn. We went up town a little
while in eve.
Thurs. Nov. 28
Thanksgiving Day. Beautiful weather in A.M. but the wind started too blow quite
hard about 1 & then it changed too the north about 3 & got colder. Mon
picked corn at Arthurs. Dean, Iona & Philip came over for dinner. Mon came
about 12 for dinner & stayed until about 1:30. Dean went over too Howard's
a few minutes in P.M. They went home about 3:30. Had a little calf this morn.
Fri. Nov. 29
Rather a chilly damp day. Sun didn't shine much. Arthur came over about
9 A.M. & helped Mon sort out the hogs. Leonard Dow came about 10:45 &
hauled the sows too Decorah. Mon & I went when the truck went. Large crowd
in town. Arthur's & Dean's were both down town. I ran around
with Iona awhile & then in P.M. I went down too the Hospital with Dean &
Iona. Mama is about the same. We got home about 5. Mon bought a rubber tired
wagon & bro't it home behind the car. $204. The 11 sows weighed 3730
lbs. @ $23.25 per cwt. & bro't $867.22.
Sat. Nov. 30
Not too bad a day but chilly. The sun shone most of the day. Mon was at Arthur's
all day picking corn. We went up town in eve. It got much cooler in eve.
Sun. Dec. 1
Nice bright day but cold. Mon was over at Arthur's in A.M. fixing the
corn picker. We both went over there after dinner & Mon & Arthur went
up & got Mama's oil burner & bro't it down too Arthur's
for them too use awhile. We stayed until they got it set up & going good.
Mon. Dec. 2
About 3º above this morn. Cold in the A.M. but warmed up some in P.M. but
the wind blew hard & it was plenty chilly. I washed & ironed. Mon did
odd jobs. Hauled up some beans & corn fodder etc. Arthur had too help Howard
shred so they couldn't pick corn.
Tues. Dec. 3
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Arthur's all day picking corn. We went down
too see Mama in eve. Got a letter from Isa.
Wed. Dec. 4
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Arthur's all day picking corn. Warmest Dec.
4th on record.
Thurs. Dec. 5
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Arthur's again today. We went up town a few
minutes in eve. There was a "Shower" at the M.E. church in eve for
Mr. & Mrs. La Vern McMartin. Got a letter from Isa & one from Aunt Eunice.
Found a pullet egg in the pit today.
Fri. Dec. 6
Iona's Birthday. Rather cloudy ate times but the sun shone some too. Quite
warm & thawed quite a little. Mon was at Arthur's in A.M. picking
corn. They finished there at noon & picked here in P.M. Mon didn't
feel very good.
Sat. Dec. 7
Quite nice early in A.M. but clouded up about 11 & was rather dark the rest
of the day. Not cold but just rather damp & chilly. Mon & I went too
Decorah about 10:15. Went down too the Hospital when we got too town & down
again before we came home. I got my hair fixed. Olive was at the Hospital &
rode back up town with us. Mama is about the same. Aunt Eunice is staying in
Decorah for a while & visiting her. We went up town awhile in eve. Sold
the rest of the young roosters today. 32 weighed 120 lbs. @ .22 & bro't
$26.40.
Sun. Dec. 8
Dandy nice warm day. Mon took the car up too B.O. about 10 A.M. too have Roy
fix it. Arthur went up & bro't him home about 11:30. Got the first
pullet eggs today (2). Thawed a lot & dried the ground too. Warmest Dec.
8th on record.
Mon. Dec. 9
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot & dried. I washed & ironed. Mon cleaned
out the brooder house & hauled out manure. The wind got into the north in
the nite & blew quite hard & got a little cooler.
Tues. Dec. 10
Quite a nice day. Rather cloudy at times but the sun shone most of the day.
Cooler but not too bad. Arthur came over & helped Mon haul in & stack
beans.
Wed. Dec. 11
Quite a nice day. Arthur was over & helped finish stacking the beans in
A.M. He & Mon went too B.O. awhile in P.M.
Thurs. Dec. 12
Not very nice in A.M. Rather cloudy but the sun came out in P.M. & shone
most of the time. Got colder in A.M. & froze. Was cold & windy all day.
I went too L.A.S. at the church with Roy, Bernice & Lizzie. Arthur &
Ruth came & got me from there & I went too Decorah with them in P.M.
Arthur & I went down too see Mama. She seems about the same. We got home
about 4:30. Dean & Iona came over in eve. Mon & Dean went too B.O. awhile
in eve. Muriel T. Josephine Powers Edith Perry & Mary Safford entertained
L.A.S. Good dinner.
Fri. Dec. 13
10º this morn. Pretty cold windy day. The sun did shine a little but it
didn't warm up too much. The wind went down in eve. Didn't do much
of anything.
Sat. Dec. 14
Rather a cloudy dark day & chilly but not too cold either. Few snow flakes
fell early in A.M. Arthur came over early in A.M. He & Ruth have a big baby
boy born very early this A.M. Over 7 lbs. Daniel Roger. Mon & I went too
Decorah with him about 10:30. Arthur & I went down too the Hospital just
a minute when we got too town. Went down again at 2. I went up too see Ruth
a little while. Mama was so sick too her stomach all the time I was there that
I couldn't be with her. We got home about 5. Went up town awhile in eve
with Roy & Bernice.
Sun. Dec. 15
Not very nice day. Started too snow about 11 A.M. & kept it up off &
on the rest of the day. Not hard though. Got enough too cover the ground. Not
too cold. Rather windy. Didn't do much of anything. Arthur was down too
see Ruth & Mama & he said Mama was O.K. today.
Mon. Dec. 16
Not very nice day. Not very cold until about 3 P.M. it cleared off & the
wind got into the west & north & got much colder. Wind blew hard then
& all nite. Arthur came over in A.M. & they tried too pick corn but
it didn't go very good. Arthur was here for dinner. Mon went along with
him when he went home & went up town & spent the P.M.
Tues. Dec. 17
About zero this A.M. Cold windy day. Didn't do much of anything. Rather
blustery at times. Wind went down in the nite.
Wed. Dec. 18
About zero this A.M. Quite a nice day. Warmed up some but was plenty cool. Wind
didn't blow so hard. I went too Decorah in P.M. with Arthur, Roger &
Virginia. Went down too the Hospital too see Mama & Ruth. Mama doesn't
feel very well. So sick too her stomach. We got home about 5. Mon went too B.O.
in P.M.
Thurs. Dec. 19
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. I washed & ironed. Mon did odd jobs. Hauled
up wood & corn fodder etc. Elder Jerviss was here in A.M. & Arthur was
here awhile in eve.
Fri. Dec. 20
Quite nice until late in P.M. it clouded up some. Snowed in the nite. Arthur
was over in A.M. & they picked corn. Arthur & I went too Decorah &
bro't Ruth & Danny home. I stayed there until about 8:30 Arthur bro't
me home. Mrs. K. is there. Howard Q. came down in P.M. & helped Mon pick
corn. They got a nice lot out. Little daughter born too Gladys & Floyd Blaess.
Sat. Dec. 21
Quite a nice day. I was at Arthur's all day. Mon & Arthur went too
B.O. in A.M. & Mon stayed up there until about 4:30. Arthur bro't
me home about 5. Mon & I went up town in eve with Roy & we got our car
at, last, too drive home. Cool nite.
Sun. Dec. 22
Quite a nice day. Was at Arthur's until about 3 P.M. Mon came over for
dinner & then I came home with him.
Mon. Dec. 23
Dandy nice day. Mon, Marion & I went too Decorah about 10. Large crowd in
town. I got my hair fixed. Bought my Xmas presents. Went down too the Hospital
in P.M. too see Mama. Also went up too see Gladys Blaess. Harry Q. bro't
Vera too the Hospital just as we were leaving. She has been having the flu.
Marion came home too supper with us & then we went up town awhile in eve.
Tues. Dec. 24
Dandy nice day. Mon took me over too Arthur's about 9:30 & I spent
the day over there. Mrs. K. went home just after I got there. Arthur bro't
me home about 5. Mon went too Decorah again today. He went up town a minute
in eve.
Wed. Dec. 25
Beautiful day. We spent the day at Arthur's. Came home about 4. Mr. &
Mrs. K. came just as we left also Bernard & Gerald. We did up our chores
early & went over too Dean's for supper. Had a swell supper (Deer
meat) Cy & Lavern & children came just as we were finishing supper so
they were there for the eve too. Had a nice lunch too. Got home about 12:15.
Got colder in the eve.
Thurs. Dec. 26
Quite a nice day but some cooler. Mon & I went over too Arthur's about
11 & took Arthur & Danny too Decorah. Took Danny too the Dr. Had too
wait until after 12:30 before we could see him. Got back about 2. Mon came down
with quite a cold in P.M.
Fri. Dec. 27
Not very nice day. Misty & damp all A.M. & then started too rain in
P.M. Froze too so it was rather slippery in places. Not cold in day time but
the wind got around into the north in P.M. late & it got some colder. Mon
took me to B.O. after dinner & I rode too Club at Alice Wilbur's with
Florence. Quite a crowd out. We had our Xmas party. I got a nice casserole from
Muriel. Had a swell lunch.
Sat. Dec. 28
Iowa is 100 years old today. Not a very nice day. Rather dark & dreary.
Slippery. We went out too Arthur's about 10:45 & took Mrs. K., Ruth
& Danny too Decorah. Arthur went down with their car earlier. Mrs. K. went
home. We took Danny too the Dr. again. He is some better today. Ruth & Danny
went home with Arthur. Mon took me down too the Hospital too see Mama a few
minutes. We got home about 2. It started too snow & got colder in the eve.

About zero this morn. Nice bright day but quite windy. Rather blustery at times.
The snow drifted some. Wind went down at nite & got colder. Didn't
do much of anything.
Mon. Dec. 30
12º below this morn. Beautiful day but cold. Warmed up some during the
day but got much colder at nite again. We went over to Arthurs a few minutes
in P.M. & then on up town awhile.
Tues. Dec. 31
24 below this morn. Beautiful cold day again. Didn't do much of anything.
Warmed up quite a little. Not quite so cold at nite.
