Mon. Jan. 1
14º below this morn. Cold, cold day with a hard wind blowing all day making
it colder. Only got 4 degrees warmer all day. Claude's, Mama & Dell's
were here for dinner. Had a little calf early.
Tues. Jan. 2
28º below this morn. Nice bright day but cold. Warmed up some during the
day. Wind got in the south late in P.M. & it snowed a little in eve but
the wind switched back in the north in the nite. Dean hauled up hay & corn
stalks from the field & they hauled up a jag of wood to the house. I worked
at the Income Tax. Verna was here awhile in P.M. Dean went over there in eve.
We had a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. Jan. 3
10º below. Nice bright day but cold. We went too Decorah about 12. Quite
a few in town but it was cold down there. Had a Xmas card from Arthur today.
Thurs. Jan. 4
Nice bright day but cool. It warmed up some though. Mon & Dean went up town
awhile in P.M. & then we went up town in eve. Mon went to Lodge.
Fri. Jan. 5
Not very nice day. Rather cold. Tried too snow all day. Mon & Dean went
up too Johnnie Carolan's & got a load of corn.
Sat. Jan. 6
Not quite so cold but still chilly. Dark & dreary. We went over & got
Marion & went too Decorah about noon. Didn't stay down so long. Went
up town in eve. Marion, Ole & Mr. [Pyor?] rode home with us.
Sun. Jan. 7
Not such a cold day but not nice. Dean was gone all day.
Mon. Jan. 8
Snowed some early in A.M. & wasn't so cold but it got colder after
the snow quit. Sun came out & shone most of the day but it was cold &
windy & the snow drifted. Mon & Dean went up town awhile in P.M. Got
a letter from Ruth & one from Isa. Dean went over too Howards in eve. Very
cold nite but the wind went down.
Tues. Jan. 9
18 below. Not very nice day although not too bad. Warmed up a very little. I
washed. The men hauled in some corn shocks in P.M. & then Mon went over
too Johnnie Carolan's & got a load of corn. It snowed hard in the
nite but with no wind the snow lay just where it fell.
Wed. Jan. 10
Sun shone all day & a little warmer but still chilly. The men had too hitch
the team on the car too get it started & then we went too Decorah about
1. Didn't stay too long. Mr. & Mrs. Martin Olson rode home from Decorah
with us. We went up town in eve awhile. The snow plow went along our roads late
in P.M. & eve & cleaned them out good.
Thurs. Jan. 11
Quite a nice day but the wind blew quite hard & blew the snow quite a little.
Mon took me too L.A.S. Louie Headington went along too. Violet U. & Lottie
Manuel entertained. Good crowd out & a grand dinner. Had election of officers.
Violet U. Pres. Stella Halse V. Pres., Inez W. Sec., Muriel T. Asst Sec., Anita
B. Treas., & Valeda Asst. Treas. We sent a box to Arthur today. Had another
little calf tonite.
Fri. Jan. 12
Nice day. Sun shone & it thawed quite a little. The men hauled in feed in
A.M. Dean helped Howard saw wood in P.M. & Mon went up too Johnnie C's
& got a load of corn in P.M. We went up town in eve too a party & dance
at the Hall for La Vern McMartin. Large crowd out & they had a good time.
We got home about 1:30. Dean went too Decorah with Clyde too take Edna back
too her work.
Sat. Jan. 13
Not very nice day. Snowed hard in A.M. & off & on in P.M. Warm so it
was quite damp. We went too Decorah. I got my hair fixed. We didn't go
up town in eve.
Sun. Jan. 14
Not very nice day. Foggy & misty & damp all day. Not cold. Mon &
Dean took me too church in A.M. Dean went over too Howard's in P.M.
Mon. Jan. 15
Not very nice early in A.M. but turned out too be a very nice day. Mon &
Dean cleaned the hen house in A.M. & Mon went up too Johnnie's &
got a load of corn in P.M. Cooler nite.
Tues. Jan. 16
Nice day. I washed. Mon went up too Johnnie's in A.M. after a load of
corn but he didn't get back until in P.M. about 3. Another man was there
after corn so he had too wait. Dean helped Dave saw wood. Chas. W. was here
awhile in P.M.
Wed. Jan. 17
Not such a nice day but not too cold. Started too snow in P.M. & kept it
up most of the nite too I guess. Quite a lot of snow fell. Mon & Dean went
up too Johnnie's & got a load of corn. We had 2 letters from Arthur
today. One quite old. Written Dec. 10th. Also got a picture of him. Got warmer
in the nite.
Thurs. Jan. 18
Not such a bad day. The sun shone some & it thawed all day. Mon & Dean
hauled up some corn fodder & wood in A.M. Dean helped Roy in P.M. Marion
was here for dinner. Dean went up town in eve.
Fri. Jan. 19
Not very nice day. Dark damp & dreary. Chas. W. came about 10 A.M. after
the sows he bought. Dean helped him get them weighed & home. He hauled them
in his small pickup taking them by 4 & 3 too Prosper too weigh them &
then on home. The 7 weighed 1363 lbs. @ $14.30 & bro't $194.91. Mon
went up too Fritz's & over too Louie's in P.M. & then on
up town awhile. Had a letter from Arthur & one from Ruth.
Sat. Jan. 20
Not such a nice day. We went too Decorah. Mama & Marion went along. I went
too the Show in P.M. It was good. We went up town in eve. Jimmie Whalen rode
home with us.
Sun. Jan. 21
Not such a nice day. Tried too snow off & on all day. Mon & I went over
to Maxine's & spent the day. Took Dave & Lizzie along. Dean started
out with us but we met Clyde coming down here so Dean came back home.
Mon. Jan. 22
Nice day but cool. I washed. The men hauled in feed. Chas. W. was here in P.M.
& got another sow. They just lumped her off.
Tues. Jan. 23
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Mon & Dean took me up too Miriam's
in P.M. & we fixed up our Joan of Arc books. Mon & I went over too Roy's
in eve.
Wed. Jan. 24
Mon's 50th Birthday. Nice day. The men worked around all day. Fern, Howard
& Shirley were down for supper & spent the eve. We had a good time.
Thurs. Jan. 25
Nice day. We went up town about 11:30 & I went too L.A.S. Anita & Luella
entertained. Quite a crowd out. The new officers took over today so Miriam &
I were let out. Seemed good too. Mon & Dean went up town in eve.
Fri. Jan. 26
Nice day. The men took me up too Gust's in P.M. & Charlie & Mr.
[Bencher?] met us girls there with the team & sled & took us down too
Gladys for Club. Our men went on too B.O. Quite a crowd out too Club. Vivian
Breitsprecher & Nora Gossman were initiated. The new officers took over
today. Good initiation. Had a swell lunch. Got a letter from Arthur & one
from Isa.
Sat. Jan. 27
Not such a nice day. Cooler. We went over & got Marion & went too Decorah.
Walter Nelson went along too. Very large crowd in town. I got my hair fixed.
We went up town in eve. Ray Hennings was in B.O. He got his honorable discharge
from the Army. Olaf & Kate L. came today for a visit. Dean went too Decorah
with Clyde so he got home later than we did.
Sun. Jan. 28
Nice bright day but cool. Mon took me too church in A.M. Clyde was here for
dinner. He & Dean went over too Ed Knoke's in P.M. awhile.
Mon. Jan. 29
Quite nice in A.M. but snowed lightly off & on all P.M. I washed. The men
hauled in feed & wood in A.M. Got colder at nite.
Tues. Jan. 30
Cold day. Rather windy & tried too snow off & on all day. The sun shone
some though. Mon & Dean went up town awhile in P.M. Fritz was here awhile
after dinner. I got a letter from Loyal today.
Wed. Jan. 31
15 below this morn. Nice bright day but cold. Warmed up a little during the
day but was a cold nite again. We sold some hogs this morn. Leonard Dow hauled
them too Decorah about 9:45. Mon went too Decorah too. Dean went over &
helped Roy load a hog in his car too take too Decorah too butcher, about 11:20
& then he went too Decorah with Roy. Mon & Dean came home about 4. 28
hogs weighed 6080 lbs. @ $14.35 per cwt. & bro't $872.39. Got a letter
from Ruth today.
Thurs. Feb. 1
15 below this morn. Quite a nice day. Warmed up during the day. Mon & Dean
went up town in P.M. & then Dean walked up in eve.
Fri. Feb. 2
Not such a nice day. Tried too snow off & on all day. Sun shone a little.
Quite a lot warmer. The men hauled in feed.
Sat. Feb. 3
Not very nice day. Cloudy & chilly. Started too snow in P.M. & snowed
quite hard at times. Rained some in eve & then started too snow quite hard.
Kept it up the most of the nite I guess. We went to Decorah about 11. Mama went
along. Large crowd in town. Dean got a hair cut. We went up town in eve. Jimmie
Whalen rode home with us.
Sun. Feb. 4
Snowed & the wind blew so it was quite like a blizzard part of the time
but it wasn't cold. Dean went over too Howard's awhile in P.M. O'Dean
Leonhart & Maryln Halvorson were married this eve.
Mon. Feb. 5
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men didn't do too much. Shoveled
some snow.
Tues. Feb. 6
Rather a dark day but warm. Sun shone very little. Thawed quite a little. Mon
& Dean hauled in some wood in A.M. & then hitched up Billy & drove
him for the first time. He went pretty good too. Arlin F. bro't a truck
load of corn in P.M. Dean went over too Howard's in eve. Mon & Dean
went up town a little while in P.M.
Wed. Feb. 7
Not such a very nice day. The wind blew quite hard & drifted the snow. We
went up town about 11:30 & I went too Lutheran L.A.S. Audry L., Ruby R.
& Gladys Reed entertained. Had a dandy good dinner & a big crowd. We
came home early as the roads were drifting full. Plenty of snow in some places.
I got a letter, birthday card & handkie from Ruth & a birthday card
from Isa & one from Maude J.
Thurs. Feb. 8
My 53rd Birthday. Not such a nice day. Rather cool. The men drove Billy around
quite a little in P.M. Dean went up too Ludvig's in eve & then on
up town. Verna & Darlene were over in eve.
Fri. Feb. 9
Grand day. Just like spring. Nice & warm. Thawed a lot & the snow settled
a lot. The snow plow went past here & cleaned out the road. The men drove
Billy around again all A.M. They went up town in P.M. Got a birthday card from
Zoa.
Sat. Feb. 10
Rather chilly dark day although it thawed quite a little too. We went too Decorah
about 11. I got my hair fixed. Quite a crowd in town. We went up town in eve.
Mon & I came home about 11:30 & Dean came later.
Sun. Feb. 11
Quite a nice day. Thawed a lot. Dr. Hawkins was sick so there was no church
today. Dean went over too Howard's awhile in P.M.
Mon. Feb. 12
Very nice early in A.M. & then it clouded up & looked quite stormy cleared
off & was nice again in P.M. Thawed again. I washed & ironed. The men
went up town in P.M. Dean got his letter today too report for his physical exam
next Mon. We got a letter from Arthur. Dean went up town with Howard in eve.
Tues. Feb. 13
Snowed quite a little early in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was nice.
Thawed a lot. We went too Decorah in P.M. Went up town in eve too a dance at
the Hall for Leonard Olson who is home on furlough. Had a nice time. Got home
about 1:45. Got a letter & a birthday present of cloth for an apron from
Isa today.
Wed. Feb. 14
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot & the snow settled a lot too. The men drove
Billy around in A.M. & then hauled up some hay with him. They went up town
in P.M. Howard was here awhile late in P.M. It rained in the nite.
Thurs. Feb. 15
Nice day. Thawed quite a lot. Got colder in P.M. & was cold in the nite.
Mon & Dean took Bernice & I too L.A.S. Fern & Miriam served. Had
a good crowd & a good dinner. Had a letter from Ruth.
Fri. Feb. 16
Cold day. Didn't do too much. Had a letter from Arthur today.
Sat. Feb. 17
Cold chilly day. We went too Decorah & Mama went along. Very large crowd
in town. Went up town awhile in eve.
Sun. Feb. 18
Quite a nice day but chilly. We went down too Claude's. Marion was home
& Mama was over there too. Had a good time. Artie McIntire died early this
A.M. Myrtle & Vernie were here a minute in eve.
Mon. Feb. 19
Not very nice day. Cold in A.M. but warmed up some in P.M. & snowed off
& on all P.M. & into the eve. We got up early & the men did up a
few chores & then we took Clyde & Dean too Decorah. Edna Knoke rode
along down too. The boys left for Jefferson Barracks about 10:15 for their physical
exams. About 75 went on the busses too Dubuque & from there on the train.
Mon & I went too Mabel in P.M. & bought a heating stove. $90 [Cerinlating?]
heater. Harry Q. & Howard helped Mon get it out of the car & into the
house.
Tues. Feb. 20
Not a very nice day but not too bad either. Not very cold. Mon went up town
in A.M. & got some stove pipe. I went too Decorah with Roy & Bernice
too Artie Mc's funeral. It was at the Fjetstul Funeral Home. Quite a few
out. They had so many beautiful flowers. Bernice, Maxine & I carried the
flowers. Fritz helped Mon set up the new stove in P.M. We had 2 letters from
Arthur today. We had another little calf this morn.
Wed. Feb. 21
Snowed all day & sometimes quite hard & the wind blew hard all day &
nite. Mon took Gust & Ray too Cresco about 11. They got back about 2:30.
Thurs. Feb. 22
Not too nice a day but not too bad. Not cold. Harry & Bobbie were here in
P.M. The snow plow went through about noon. Howard was here in eve awhile. Dean
called about 9:20 from Decorah & Mon & I went down & got him &
Clyde. Stayed at Bill's a few minutes & then went up too B.O. a few
minutes on our way home. Got home about 11:30. Dean passed but Clyde didn't
exactly pass.
Fri. Feb. 23
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was very nice in P.M. The men did
up a lot of work in A.M. They went up town awhile in P.M. Dean went over too
Howard's a few minutes in eve. Had a letter & a card from Ruth today.
Sat. Feb. 24
Not too bad a day. Thawed quite a lot. We went too Decorah about 11. I got my
hair fixed & Mon got a hair cut. We went up town in eve. It rained hard
in eve. Jimmie Whalen rode home from town with us.
Sun. Feb. 25
Not very nice day. Rained off & on in A.M. sometimes quite hard. Started
too snow about noon & snowed hard at times in P.M. & the wind blew hard
so we had a regular blizzard at times. Got colder late in P.M. Mon & Dean
took me too church in A.M.
Mon. Feb. 26
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was quite a nice day but cool. The
men didn't do much of anything. Dean went over too Howard's in eve.
Tues. Feb. 27
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. I washed &
did part of the ironing. Mon went too Decorah in A.M. & got back about 5:30.
Howard was here in A.M.
Wed. Feb. 28
Nice day. Thawed quite a lot. The men drove Billy around in A.M. went over to
Marion's & then hauled up hay & wood. Got a letter from Ruth.
Thurs. Mar. 1
Nice day. Mon went over too Mrs. Winters early in A.M. & got Martin Abrahamson
too chop wood for us. Dean helped him all day. Mon took Bernice & I too
L.A.S. Mrs. Krumm & Margaret Ward entertained. They furnished all the food.
Had a swell dinner. Large crowd out. We went up town in eve. Got 2 letters from
Arthur.
Fri. Mar. 2
Not quite so nice today. Not cold though. Started too snow about 1:30 &
snowed the rest of P.M. & eve & some times quite hard. Mon took me up
town after dinner & I went too Club at Laura Berge's with Miriam.
Not many out but we had a good time & a swell lunch. (Strawberry shortcake).
Martin went down too Mart Leonhart's when it started too snow & didn't
come back. The men cleaned out the calf pen & hen house in A.M.
Sat. Mar. 3
Quite a nice day but cooler. We went down town about 11. Large crowd in town.
Went up town in eve. I went up too Ella Reeds & met with the girls too get
addresses of the boys in Service so as too send Easter cards too them. Cady
Potter had a stroke this P.M. late & is very low. Got a letter from Arthur.
Sun. Mar. 4
Quite a nice day. Mon took me too church in A.M. Dean went over too Howard's
awhile in P.M. Artie Q. was here in P.M.
Mon. Mar. 5
Started too snow early in A.M. & kept it up all day. Not so cold until later
in P.M. it got some colder. The wind came up & blew the snow quite a lot.
I went over too Howard's a while in P.M. Sonny's Birthday. No mail
today.
Tues. Mar. 6
Nice bright day but cool. The snow plow cleaned out the road in A.M. We went
up town in P.M. Clyde went up with us. Arthur & May Walters & baby were
here & spent the eve. Clyde too. Had a letter from Arthur today that came
in a week. Dean got his questionarre today.
Wed. Mar. 7
Nice day. Mon went & got Martin A. this morn early & he chopped wood
again. Cady Potter passed away this A.M.
Thurs. Mar. 8
Dandy nice day. I washed in A.M. We went too Decorah in P.M. & Dean got
his questionarre fixed out. He went up town in eve.
Fri. Mar. 9
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. The men cut wood. Marion walked over in P.M. late
& the men did up chores early & we went over too Albert's for
supper. Had roast turkey & all the trimmings. The men played cards in eve
& then we had lunch before we came home ice cream cake cookies etc. Had
a good time. We took Marion home. Got home about 12:30. Mon is coming down with
quite a cold. We got a letter from Arthur today that came in a week. Louie K.
was here in A.M. on the Red Cross Drive.
Sat. Mar. 10
Dandy nice day. The men took me too B.O. at noon too Cady Potter's funeral
& then they went on too Decorah. Quite a crowd out too the funeral. Mrs.
K. & I sang "Old Rugged Cross", "Rock of Ages" &

Sun. Mar. 11
Clarence Dawley's house burned early this A.M. Rained hard early in A.M.
& was cloudy & damp all A.M. but cleared off & was quite nice in
P.M. Roy took Bernice & I too church & then there was a celebration
for Muriel & Dave T's 25th wedding Ann. Every thing was just fine.

Mon. Mar. 12
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean went too the Fitch Sale. Mon went
too School Election in P.M. Fritz was put back in again. We had a letter from
Arthur today & one from Harlan.
Tues. Mar. 13
Dandy nice day. The men hauled up wood all day. So much of the snow disappeared
today. Had a letter from Isa & one from Ruth. Mon helped me a little while
in A.M. cutting up meat & grinding lard. I got the lard all tried out today.
Wed. Mar. 14
Dandy spring day. Thawed a lot. The men hauled up wood all day. Rained in the
nite.
Thurs. Mar. 15
Rained hard early in A.M. & rained off & on all day. Sometimes quite
hard. Took a lot of the snow. Mon & Dean started too take Lizzie Bernice
& I too L.A.S. in A.M. & we just got nicely started when our car stopped
& refused too go. Dean went over & got Roy & he took all of us but
Dean up town then. Picnic dinner. Fair crowd out for such a day & such roads
plenty muddy, Mon got Gordon Reid too come down & they got our car started
so he & Dean came up town in P.M. I came home with them. We went up town
a while in eve.
Fri. Mar. 16
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was just like a summer day.
Up past 70º with quite a breeze. Dried the ground a lot. The men went up
town a while in P.M. Lots of high water in the creeks & rivers. Had a hard
storm about 9:30 in eve. Wind, hail, thunder & lightning. Not so much rain
though.
Sat. Mar. 17
Quite a nice day. Dried up a lot. We went too Decorah about 10:30. Mama went
along. Dean got a hair cut. Very large crowd in town. We went up town in eve.
Had another little calf this morn.
Sun. Mar. 18
Quite a nice day but quite windy. Mon & Dean took me too church in A.M.
& then Dean went too Ludvigs & spent the day. He went over too Howard's
in eve. It stormed some in the nite.
Mon. Mar. 19
Not such a nice day but not too bad. Cooler & the wind blew quite hard.
I washed & ironed. The men hauled up wood. Mon went up too Fritz's
awhile in P.M. too school meeting. We got a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. Mar. 20
Nice bright day but quite a wind. Cool too. The men & Roy & Dave went
up too Lester Bronner's in A.M. & sacked up seed oats. They went up
in P.M. & got them Glen Clark hauled them.
Wed. Mar. 21
Nice day. The men hauled up wood all day. We went up town a while in eve. I
worked in the yard in P.M. & went over too Pearl's a few minutes.
I sent a box too Arthur today.
Thurs. Mar. 22
Nice day. We sold the rest of our hogs early this A.M. Leonard Dow hauled them
too Decorah. Mon & Dean went about 10. Roy took Bernice & I over too
Brayton's about 1 too a meeting. Learning too care for electrical equipment.
Mon & Dean bro't us home. Dean went up town in eve. Howard was here
all eve. I got a letter from Ruth. 3 hogs weighed 495 lbs. @ $13.85 & 6
weighed 1480 lbs. @ $14.35 so they bro't $280.90
Fri. Mar. 23
Nice day but windy. The men finished hauling up the wood in A.M. Mon went up
town in P.M. & Dean cleaned out the hen house & did other jobs. Howard,
Leonard B., Arthur W., Ray H. were all here in eve fixing Howard's tractor
doing some electric drilling etc.
Sat. Mar. 24
Not too nice a day & not too bad either until late in P.M. it clouded up
& rained quite hard at times. Rained most of the nite. Mon went over &
got Marion & he went too Decorah with us. I got my hair fixed & Mon
got his cut. Marion came home too supper with us & Mon & I took him
up town in eve. We came home early. Dean stayed home.
Sun. Mar. 25
Rained off & on all day. Mon & Dean took me too church in A.M. Dean
went over too Howard's a few minutes in P.M.

Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Quite windy.
The men did odd jobs. Mon went up town a little while in P.M. We had another
little calf today.
Tues. Mar. 27
Dandy nice day but quite windy. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean went over
too Ed Knoke's & I went over too Genevra's. They drove the colt
around after we got home. Drove him over too Marion's & up too Gust's.
We went up town awhile in eve. Got a letter from Isa today.
Wed. Mar. 28
Nice day but quite windy & cooler. Albert Emery came about 8 A.M. &
they started sawing wood about 8:30 & got done about 1:15. Howard, Arthur,
Clyde & Ray Henning helped. Mon took me out to the 4 corners when they got
through sawing & I went too Club with Miriam W. at Stella Halse's.
Quite a few out & we had a swell lunch (Turkey). Came back too B.O. &
Mon came up there & got me. He & Dean helped saw at Gust's in
P.M.
Thurs. Mar. 29
Nice day. Dean helped saw at Arthur W's. in A.M. Mon took me too L.A.S.
about 11:30. Gladys & Alice entertained. Had a grand dinner. They furnished
everything. Quite a few out. Mon & Dean took me over too Genevra's
in eve & then they went on up town. Mon came after me about 10 & Dean
came home later.
Fri. Mar. 30
Quite a nice day. Mon & Dean went up too Gust's in A.M. & got
a load of hay. Dean hauled manure in P.M. & Mon split wood.
Sat. Mar. 31
Nice day. Dean went over & got Marion early in A.M. & we went too Decorah.
Allen went with us too. We stopped & got Ruth on our way home from town
& she came home too supper with us. We took her home about 10 & then
went on up town awhile.
Sun. Apr. 1
Nice day but quite windy. Mon took Lizzie Bernice & I too church in A.M.
17 joined the church this A.M. L. & B. were 2. Mon & I went down on
Silver Creek in P.M. fishing. Too windy to get many fish. I got some flowers.
Had some fun with Sonny. He was down there with Leonard B.
Mon. Apr. 2
Nice day but quite a lot cooler & very windy. Harry Falck was here early
in A.M. & dehorned calves. Mon split wood & Dean hauled manure. Mon
went up town awhile in P.M. We went over too Mrs. Winters in eve & got Martin
A. too come over & split wood.
Tues. Apr. 3
Not very nice day. Started too rain about 9 A.M. & then it turned into snow
& it sure did snow hard at times. Blowed quite hard in P.M. & drifted
the snow. Rained in eve so every thing was covered with sleet. Mon & Martin
split wood for awhile early in A.M. They went up town in P.M. & Martin didn't
come back with them. Albert, Florence & Norris came along about [?] P.M.
& I went too Bluffton with them too see Donnie Baker about papering the
church. We had trouble getting back up the Lange hill but we made it O.K. They
stopped awhile on the way back.

Not too nice a day & still not too bad. Wind blew hard all day. Sun shone
at times quite nice. Everything covered with ice. The wind knocked some of it
off but there was still plenty left. The mail man didn't come. Martin
A. came back this eve.

Dandy nice day. I washed. Mon & Martin split wood & Dean did odd jobs.
We went too Decorah about 2:30 too get some chicken feed. Martin didn't
come home with us. Glen is home on a furlough & is going back Sat. so Martin
wanted the rest of the time with him. We went up town awhile in eve. Mama is
back at her home so I went up there a while. Had a letter from Arthur today.
Fri. Apr. 6
Not such a bad day. The men split wood most of the day. Dean went over too Howard's
a few minutes in eve. We had a letter from Arthur today.
Sat. Apr. 7
Quite a nice day. We went up & got Mama & went too Decorah quite early.
She got a permanent. Dean got a hair cut & I got my hair fixed. Quite a
crowd in town. Mama came home too supper with us & then we went up town
in eve. Our snow is all gone except in the ditches.
Sun. Apr. 8
Nice day. Maxine was at Lizzie's so she drove Roy's car & took
all us women too church. The men went fishing & were gone all day. They
didn't get so many though. Pretty windy again. Little son born too Gertie
& Lawrence Donlan this morn.
Mon. Apr. 9
Rather cloudy & rainy looking at times & very windy. I washed. Martin
came back too split wood. Mon helped him in A.M. Dean hauled manure. Mon &
I went too Mabel in P.M. awhile. Mama went along. I ironed after we got home
& Mon split wood. Got a letter from Ruth.
Tues. Apr. 10
Dandy nice day but quite windy. Mon & Martin finished splitting the wood
about 10 & then Mon took Martin over too Mrs. Winters. Dean mowed the lawn
for the first time this year. They took off the storm windows & we worked
around outside in P.M. cleaning up. Dean took the banking away from the house
& Mon started too spade up the garden spot. We went up town in eve. It sprinkled
some in the nite.
Wed. Apr. 11
Sprinkled off & on in A.M. & then it rained quite hard about noon &
then in P.M. it rained quite hard most of P.M. Cleared off at nite or rather
late in P.M. Dean hauled out manure until it rained. Gust came down about 10:30
& bro't back the seeder. It rained so that he stayed for dinner. Mr.
Klinker bro't out our new Ford tractor about 11. Got the corn plow but
no plow. $1089.49. We went down town in P.M. Louie K. was here a few minutes
after supper & Howard was over in eve.
Thurs. Apr. 12
Quite a nice day but the wind was chilly. Dean fixed fence in A.M. Mon took
Bernice & I too L.A.S. at the church. Picnic dinner. Not such a large crowd
out but still a pretty good crowd. Mon & Dean went over & got Roy's
disc after we got home & Mon disced until supper time & then for a while
after chores. Dean went up town in eve. I got a letter from Loyal today. President
Roosevelt died very suddenly this P.M. at 3:35. V. Pres. Truman was sworn in
as Pres. at 6:09 in the eve. It rained in the nite.

Froze this morn. Not such a bad day but chilly. The men did odd jobs. Mon went
up town awhile late in P.M.
Sat. Apr. 14
Quite a bright nice day but chilly. Dean went over early & got Marion &
we went too Decorah. Large crowd in town. Everything closed at 2:45 until 4
in respect for Roosevelt. I went down too the Hospital a minute on our way home
too see Gertie & the new boy. We took Marion too B.O. on our way home. Mon
disced after we got home. We went up town in eve. I sent a box too Arthur.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & nite. Sometimes quite hard.
Mon took Lizzie, Bernice & I too church in A.M. Mrs. Dawley died early this
A.M. Gust was quite sick in eve with a bad nose bleed. Had a little calf today.

Rained off & on all day. Pretty hard at times. Mon & Dean went up town
awhile in P.M. Howard was here in eve. Lottie & Grace Dawley were here in
eve too. Had a letter from Ruth today.
Tues. Apr. 17
Froze quite a little this morn. Nice & bright most of the day but cold &
windy. Had some snow flurries during the day. Mon, Dean & I went over too
Louie K's, then Arthur S's. & then up town in A.M. Dean tried
too disc in P.M. but it didn't go very good so he quit. Mon & I went
up too see Gust awhile in P.M. & then over too Marion's a minute.
Ruth & Fritz went too Rochester this P.M. for her too go thro' the
clinic.
Wed. Apr. 18
Froze quite hard this morn 28º. Sun shone most of the day but it was so
cold & windy. Mon & I went too B.O. in P.M. too Mrs. Dawley's
funeral at the A.C. church. Arthur, Alberta & I sang & Mrs. K. played.
"The Old Rugged Cross" & "Going Down the Valley".
Very large crowd out. The church was packed. Dean went over too Howard's
in eve. The wind went down in the nite.
Thurs. Apr. 19
28º this morn. Frozen hard this morn but it warmed up soon. Very nice early
in A.M. but clouded up & rained. Cleared off in P.M. again. Had quite a
storm in eve. Thunder, lightning, rain & hail. I washed & did part of
the ironing. Grace Blaess called about 9:30 & wanted Mon, Dean & Howard
too come too the Hospital too see if either of their blood was O.K. too give
a transfusion too Doris, who is very sick. But when they got down there Doris
brother Buster was there & his blood was right so they used his. The men
got home about 12:30. They bro't Mama with them & then we took her
back in eve. Her 74th birthday. I got a letter from Ruth.
Fri. Apr. 20
Quite nice most of the day. Warmer. Mon went out too disc about 5:30 P.M. &
worked until 6:30. He helped milk & then went out & finished the discing.
Had a letter from Isa.
Sat. Apr. 21
Quite a nice day but cool. Mon went over & got Marion & then we went
up & got Mama & went too Decorah. I got my hair fixed. Large crowd in
town. Maryln Butler rode too B.O. with us from Decorah. We went up town in eve.
I went up too the church too practice. Got a letter from Arthur today &
in it he sent a German arm band.
Sun. Apr. 22
Rained hard early in A.M. & kept it up until about 10. It brightened up
then for a while & rained again about noon. Brightened up again in P.M.
but cool. Mon took Bernice, Lizzie & I too church about 10. Marion rode
along too. Bishop Lee preached & I sang in the choir. Had a swell dinner
at noon. Quite a crowd out. Roy came after us about 4:30.

Froze this morn. Not such a nice day. Raining & damp & cool. Didn't
do too much. Dean went over too Howard's in eve. Got a letter from Ruth
today.
Tues. Apr. 24
Dean's 25th Birthday. Froze this morn. Quite a nice day. I washed &
ironed. Dean went up too Roy's in P.M. & got his tractor plow &
then plowed when he got home. Mon plowed after chores & Dean went up town.
Howard was here in eve also Tom Dawley a minute. The San Francisco Conference
opened tonite at 6:30. Fritz was here awhile in P.M.

Quite a nice day but cool. The men took turns in plowing. Mon went over too
Louies & then on up town a minute in A.M. He & I went too Decorah in
P.M. Got a note from Ruth today. Mrs. Underbakke died this A.M.
Thurs. Apr. 26
Quite a nice day but cool. The men plowed & dragged. Mr. Klinker came up
in P.M. & put the lights on the tractor so Dean plowed until about 10. They
started seeding in P.M. Mon & I went up town awhile in eve. Gladys A. &
I went over too see Gladys Peacock a few minutes in eve. Willard passed away
suddenly this noon. Cold nite.
Fri. Apr. 27
Quite a nice day. Warmer. Mon & Dean went over too Art W's & got
a jag of hay in A.M. & then Dean sowed grain in P.M. & dragged some
& Mon finished the plowing for grain. I went too Club at Florence's
in P.M. with Gladys. Quite a few out & we had a swell lunch. Had a letter
from Arthur today.
Sat. Apr. 28
Quite a nice day. Dean finished sowing the large piece of oats today. Mon went
over & got Marion at noon & he was here for dinner & then went too
Decorah with Mon & I in P.M. Mon got a new brown suit $34.50 & new shoes.
I got a new spring coat. Marion came home too supper with us & then he,
Mon & I went up town in eve. False rumors of Germany's surrender tonite.

Nice day but cool. Mon & I went up town in time for church. Marion rode
along with us. We all went up too Mama's for dinner. We went too Willard
Peacock's funeral at the M.E. church in P.M. Mon was a pall bearer. I.O.O.F.
took part in the service. Very large crowd out. Dean went fishing but didn't
bring any home.

Quite a nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean fixed fence all A.M.
& Dean part of P.M. Mon dragged the small piece for oats with the tractor
in P.M. & then got started sowing it also. Harry Q. was here in eve.

Rather cloudy in A.M. & started too sprinkle about noon & kept at it
all P.M. & nite. Rained very hard at times. Snowed some too. Mon finished
seeding in A.M. & Dean dragged the small piece. We went too Decorah in P.M.
Nasty & cold down there. Dean got a hair cut & new pair of work shoes.
I got a pr. of everyday slippers & a pr. of good ones. Got a letter from
Ruth.

Rained & snowed all A.M. Rained off & on all P.M. & eve. We went
up town in P.M. I went up too Mama's. The Germans surrendered in Italy
today.

Nice bright day but cool with a strong north wind. Dean went up town in eve.

Not such a bad day but chilly. Dean dragged in A.M. after Mon finished seeding.
They went over & got Roy's plow in P.M. & started plowing. Mon
& I went too Decorah a little while late in P.M.
Sat. May 5
Nice day but the wind was cool. The men took turns plowing in A.M. Dean went
& got Marion just before dinner & he was here for dinner & went
too Decorah with us in P.M. Mama went too & then they both were here for
supper. We went up town in eve. Quite a crowd in B.O.
Sun. May 6
Dandy nice warm day. Dean went for a picnic & fishing with Clyde, Allen
& Edna & her cousin. Mon & I went too Cold Water but too many there
so we came back too Pine Creek & fished in P.M. Mon got 2 nice big suckers.
Sam Cassel's, Terry McConnel's & Billy Lange's were there
too. Dean got 2 nice suckers too. It got much colder in the nite.
Mon. May 7
Rather cloudy in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day, but cold & windy.
The men took turns plowing. I got a letter from Isa.
Tues. May 8
V. E. Day. Nice day but cold & quite windy. I washed & ironed. The men
took turns in plowing in A.M. & then Dean dragged & raked corn stalks
in P.M. Little son born too Howard & Pearl tonite at the Hospital. Dean
Marvin.
Wed. May 9
Not so bad early in A.M. & a little warmer although there was ice on the
stock tank & the ground was frozen some, but the wind didn't blow.
Got warmer during the day. Started too snow about 2:30 & kept it up the
rest of the day & on into the nite. Every thing covered with snow. Mon went
up early in A.M. & got Mama. We dressed chickens & got other things
ready for Aide. Dean raked corn stalks until about 2. Mon plowed until the snow.
We took Mama home in eve.
Thurs. May 10
Quite a nice day. Somewhat warmer. Dean hauled manure in P.M. & Mon plowed.
Mon took Bernice, Lizzie & I too B.O. about 10 A.M. Mama & I entertained
L.A.S. at the basement. Had a good crowd & a very good dinner Took in over
$21.
Fri. May 11
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day after 11. Dean finished plowing
for corn & they took the plow home & got the disc. We went up too the
school house at noon too the last day of school picnic. Quite a few out &
we had a dandy good dinner. I went over too Howard's awhile in P.M. The
kids have the whooping cough. Mon did disc awhile but it rained him out. Rained
quite hard in eve.
Sat. May 12
Pearl came home today. Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was quite
nice in P.M. but cool. Mon went over & got Marion early in A.M. & we
went too Decorah about 11. I got my hair fixed. We took Marion home from town.
Went up town in eve. I went up too Mama's a minute & in too Josie's
too. Dean didn't come home with us. Got a letter from Arthur. Got a corsage
from Arthur & Ruth. We had 8 little pigs tonite. The first.
Sun. May 13
Had 5 little pigs. Nice in A.M. & quite warm. Clouded up in P.M. & rained.
Rained in the nite too. Mon & Dean took Bernice & I too church (Mothers
Day) & then they, Marion, Gust & Roy went down too Uncle Aaron's.
B. & I went up too Mama's for dinner. Claude, Olive & Marvin were
there too. Claude & [Marvin?] went fishing in P.M. too. We came home about
4. I went over too Pearl's awhile after we got home.
Mon. May 14
Not very nice day. Cloudy & misty & cold all A.M. Quit raining about
11, but was cloudy & cold & windy the rest of the day. Mon went out
& disced awhile about noon & then Dean disced in P.M. Mon & I went
too Cresco in P.M. too get the radio fixed. Had 5 little pig today.
Tues. May 15
Quite a nice day but windy & chilly. I washed & ironed & went over
too Pearl's awhile in P.M. Mon disced in A.M. & then they took the
disc home & got the plow & he plowed. Dean hauled manure. He plowed
awhile after they got the chores done at nite. Had 6 more little pigs today.
Wed. May 16
Quite a nice day but windy & chilly. Mon plowed & Dean hauled manure
& dragged. We went up town awhile in eve. Paul Reed died very suddenly about
7 A.M.
Thurs. May 17
Quite a nice day but still windy & chilly. Dean dragged until about 11 &
then Mon started planting corn. Dean plowed in P.M. Finished up out in the field
& plowed the garden. Got 2 letters from Arthur & one from Ruth.
Fri. May 18
Dandy nice day. Just like a summer day. Mon finished planting the one piece
of corn at noon. Dean dragged the corn field in P.M. Mon & I went too Decorah.
Mon got a hair cut. Howard was over a while in eve.
Sat. May 19
Nice day only a little cooler with quite a wind. The men went over too Roy's
& got the disc so Dean disced. Mon & I went too Paul Reed's funeral
at the M.E. church in P.M. Very large crowd out. The church wouldn't hold
them all. We went up town in eve.
Sun. May 20
Had more little pigs today. Had quite a storm early in A.M. Thunder, lightning
& quite a hail storm with plenty of rain. Was dark & damp all day. I
went too church with Maxine, Bernice & Lizzie. They went on too Mabel &
then stopped for me on their way back. Howard was here in eve.
Mon. May 21
Had a hard storm early in A.M. Lots of rain, thunder & lightning. Brightened
up for a while in A.M. & then rained terribly hard in P.M. & most of
the P.M. too. Rained most of the nite & the wind blew very hard in the nite.
We went too Decorah about 11. Dean got a hair cut. The men went up town in eve
too Eddie Schissel's chiravari but there wasn't any. Got much colder
in the nite.
Tues. May 22
Colder windy day. Sun shone off & on all day & it rained off & on
& hailed a little in P.M. I went over too Howard's in A.M. early.
The baby isn't very well.
Wed. May 23
Nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed. Dean mowed the lawn in A.M. The
men didn't do too much. Ray Hennings was here awhile in A.M.
Thurs. May 24
Quite a nice day but it did look stormy off & on all day. The men went out
& tried too disc early in A.M. but they got stuck & couldn't do
much. Too wet. Mon took Bernice & I too L.A.S. Florence E. & Maxine
entertained. Quite a few out & a swell dinner. Roy came & got us in
P.M. Marion rode down with us. Mon planted corn for Roy in P.M. Mon went up
too Lodge in eve with Roy.

Nice day. Warm. Mon & Dean took me too Club at Dorothy Emmon's in
P.M. & then they went on up town. Good crowd out too Club & we had a
swell lunch.
Sat. May 26
Nice warm day. We went too Decorah about 11. Went up & got Mama. I got my
hair fixed. Large crowd in town. Marion rode home with us. He & Mama were
here for supper. Mon & I went up town in eve. Got a letter from Arthur,
first since the war was over, over there, also a letter from Ruth. Martin Olson
died tonite.

Not very nice day. Rained all day. Sometimes quite hard. Mon & Dean took
me up too church but there was none.

Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Mon &
I went over too Albert E's in P.M. for seed corn. Pearl was here in eve.

Tues. May 29
Quite a nice day but windy. Mon & I went too Decorah in A.M. Mon planted
corn for Roy in P.M. & Dean disced. I planted some garden & cleaned
the brooder house some. Had a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. May 30
Dandy nice day. Mon planted corn for Roy. Dean mowed the lawn & did odd
jobs in A.M. & disced in P.M. Ray Halse came over & dragged in P.M.
I washed & ironed & finished cleaning the brooder house. We went up
town in eve but every thing was closed so we came back & Mon & I went
too Bluffton. Dean stopped off at Howard's. A bunch of kids were there.
Thurs. May 31
Rained hard in early A.M. & off & on all day. Didn't do much of
anything. Mon walked over too Marion's in P.M. Got a package from Arthur
today. German souvenirs. Got a card from Ruth. Rained hard when the men were
milking. Had quite a storm again in the nite.
Fri. June 1
Not very nice day. Rained hard in P.M. Had quite a storm. Mon & Dean went
too B.O. awhile in P.M.
Sat. June 2
Rather a dark chilly day. Mon went over & got Marion & we went too Decorah
about 11. Large crowd in town. Went too B.O. in eve. Jimmie Whalen rode home
with us. Got a letter from Ruth. Had our last little pigs this P.M. 7. That
makes us 74 little ones.
Sun. June 3
Not very nice day. Dark & chilly. Mon took me too church in A.M. Dean went
with Harry digging out foxes but didn't get any. Howards bull was over
here this morning & Dean & Harry had to help Howard get him home. Dean
went over too Howards in eve. He was quite sick in the nite.
Mon. June 4
32º Quite frosty. Plenty cool & frosty this morn, but warmed up &
was quite a nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon finished planting corn for
Roy this P.M. Dean feels some better today but not much pep.
Tues. June 5
32º this morn. Some frost. Nice day. The men went too work in earnest planting
corn here today. Ray came over with Roys team & with Barney dragged all
day. Dean rode the disc & Mon planted. We went up town a little while in
eve.
Wed. June 6
Rather chilly & windy, partly cloudy too. Sprinkled some early in eve. Mon
& Dean dragged & disced in A.M. & then Mon planted in P.M. &
Dean dragged after the planter. Mon broke our planter about 5 & he went
over & borrowed Roy's & planted then until about 8. Walter N.
was down & mowed the lawn. He was here for dinner.
Thurs. June 7
Cloudy & cool all day. Sprinkled some off & on all day. Mon finished
planting corn in A.M. & Dean finished dragging it. They disced the bean
ground in P.M. & then disced the garden.
Fri. June 8
Quite a nice day. Warmer. The men took the disc up too Fritz's & Mon
disced in A.M. Dean went up in P.M. & finished the discing & then dragged.
They took the disc over too Roy's & got the weeder & tried it
out in the corn field late in P.M.
Sat. June 9
Not too bad a day. Clouded up in P.M. & rained in eve. Mon finished weeding
the corn field this A.M. about 10:30. Dean went over & got Marion &
then we went & got Mama & went too Decorah. I got my hair fixed &
Mon got a hair cut. Mama was here for supper & we went up town in eve. Ruth
got home from Hammond this A.M. early. Had a blow out just as we got off the
pavement coming home from Decorah this P.M.
Sun. June 10
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Not hard though. We left home
at 9:15. Got Mama & had Gordon R. fix up a tire for us for a spare &
then went too Postville too see Ruth & Francis. Had a good time. Went out
too see all the turkey's in P.M. Got home about 7.
Mon. June 11
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Mr. Klinker
came up early this A.M. & put the corn plow on the tractor & then Dean
plowed corn in A.M. & Mon plowed in P.M. Ruth was here a few minutes late
in P.M. We went up town awhile in eve. We had 2 letters from Arthur today.
Tues. June 12
Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was very nice & warm.
Mon finished plowing the east field of corn at noon. We planted potatoes &
garden in P.M. Had a letter from Arthur today. Dean went up town in eve. Maynard
Underbakke & Ann Carr were married at the B.O. M.E. Church this P.M. at
a high wedding & shower at the church in eve.
Wed. June 13
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean went over
too Marion's in A.M. Mon went too Prosper late in P.M. We went up town
in eve too a dance for Darwin Christopher who is home on furlough. Very large
crowd.
Thurs. June 14
Quite a warm day. Looked rainy at times but it didn't rain. We went too
Decorah about 11. Got our chickens. 413. Got a letter from Arthur.
Fri. June 15
Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. Mon went over &
got Marion in A.M. & he came over & helped them take the young stock
over too his place too pasture. He came back too dinner here & we went to
Cresco in P.M. Got a letter from Isa today. One of the heifers had a calf today.
Sat. June 16
Quite a nice day. Mon went over & got Marion & we went too Decorah.
Large crowd in town. We went up town in eve. Got 2 letters from Arthur. Maxine
was down town. She has left Arlin. Dave went too Decorah with us.
Sun. June 17
Nice warm day. Mon & Dean took Bernice & I too church. Dean went down
on Pine Creek & Mon & I too Silver Creek fishing but Mon just got 5.
It looked mighty stormy in P.M. but it didn't rain. Dean went over too
Howard's in eve. The other heifer had her calf this morn & we lost
them both.
Mon. June 18
Nice day. I washed. Mon plowed corn. Dean started painting the outside of the
house. Ruth came over in P.M. & stayed for supper. We took her home after
chores & then went on up town. Had a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. June 19
Nice day most of the day. Clouded up at times & sprinkled a little. Mon
went over & got Marion in A.M. & came & put in a couple of windows.
One in the boys room & one in the pantry. Mon plowed corn & Dean painted.
Got a card from Arthur that he sent from Paris. Mrs. K., Ruth & I went down
too Billie Lange's, Dave's & Roy's collecting money for
the minister in eve.

Nice day. Mon plowed corn & Dean painted. Dean went over too Howard's
in eve.

Nice day. Plenty warm. Mon plowed corn. Dean painted. We went up town awhile
in eve.

Nice warm day. Mon planted corn for Roy. Dean painted. He finished giving the
house the first coat about 1.

Warm nice day. Mon went over & got Marion early in A.M. & then we went
up & got Mama & went too Decorah. I got my hair fixed. Large crowd in
town. Mama came home too supper with us. We went up town in eve. Mon & I
came home about 11 but Dean came later. Neva Lehman passed away this P.M.
Sun. June 24
Very nice early in A.M. but clouded up about 11 & looked mighty stormy most
of the rest of the day but we just had little showers. Not enough too do much
good. Maxine, Bernice & I went too church. Dean went on a picnic. A couple
of telephone men & Mon were riding around most of the day looking at the
lines. Mon & I went up too Gust's about 4. She gave us strawberries
radishes & [lettuce?].
Mon. June 25
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon was preparing ground too plant beans
in A.M. & plowed corn in P.M. Dean started giving the house its second coat
of paint today. We went up town a little while in eve.
Tues. June 26
Nice warm day. Looked quite rainy at times but didn't rain until eve.
Had quite a shower then. Mon plowed corn in A.M. Dean painted part of the day.
Mon went too Decorah with Roy about 12 & I went about 1 with Maxine, Bernice
& Lizzie. We went too the Winn. Burial Ass. too Neva's funeral &
then on too B.O. too the Lutheran Church for Services. Mon was a pall bearer.
[Bernice?], Audry & I carried the flowers. We went down too Aunt Lissa's
a while afterward. The rendering truck came & got a cow here just after
dinner.
Wed. June 27
Cloudy part of the time & the sun shone part of the time. Quite warm. Mon
& Dean went over by Col. Bently's in A.M. & fixed the telephone
line some. Mon went with Glen Clark in P.M. & got some telephone poles &
bro't them here. Dean went over too Howard's awhile in eve.
Thurs. June 28
Had a hard storm early in A.M. From 4 until 6. Wind, thunder & lightning
& hard rain. Rather cloudy most of the day. Sun shone some though. Warm.
We went up town about 11:30. I went too L.A.S. Babe Foltz & Valeda Wilbur
entertained. Large crowd & a very nice dinner.
Fri. June 29
Dandy nice warm day. Dean mowed along the road & started too mow out in
front of the house & he broke the mower. Mon & Dean went too Decorah
after dinner too get repairs. They took Maxine & I too B.O. & then came
back after us. We went too Club at Anita's with Stella Halse. Quite a
crowd out too Club & we had a swell lunch. Mary Macha was here in eve &
signed her contract too teach our school next year.
Sat. June 30
Rather cloudy most of the day & still the sun shone quite a lot. Warm. Had
a shower in P.M. The men dragged the ground & sowed the beans this A.M.
& Dean dragged them in in P.M. Mon went over & got Marion at noon &
he was here for dinner. We went down town in P.M. Mama went along too. She was
here for supper. We went up town in eve. The Missionary Society had an ice cream
social on Ike Reeds lawn. Large crowd out. Howard & Pearl bro't the
baby home today. Colder tonite. Real cold.
Sun. July 1
Cold day. Rather cloudy & windy. Claude's were over & spent the
day. Dean & Marvin had a good time with the tractor. Ruth was here awhile
in P.M. Olive & I went over too Howard's awhile in P.M. too see the
baby. Cold nite.
Mon. July 2
Rather cloudy in A.M. but warmed up & was nicer in P.M. although it was
plenty cool. I washed & ironed. The men plowed corn. I hoed in the garden
some in P.M. The school board met here in eve. Louie K. Fritz, Henry & Joe
W. Mrs. K. & Ruth came along too. Dean went up town. I had a letter from
Isa. Pearl was here a minute in P.M. Cold nite.
Tues. July 3
Quite a nice day but cool & windy. Mon & Dean plowed corn in A.M. Mon
plowed in P.M. but Dean plowed the potatoes. Mowed the hay in front of the house
& mowed the lawn. I finished cleaning out the garden. Went over too Pearl's
a little while in P.M. Had a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. July 4
Quite a hot day. Mon plowed corn all day. Dean did odd jobs in A.M. & he
went up town with Clyde in P.M. I hoed in the garden in A.M. & P.M. awhile.
Went over too Pearl's a little while in P.M. Bill & Lenna were here
a few minutes late in P.M. also Arlin. Dean went too Matter's in eve with
Clyde & Mon went up town.
Thurs. July 5
Had a hard storm about 3 A.M. Wind blew terribly hard for a while. Rained hard
too. Lots of lightning & thunder. Quite a nice day but cool. Mon went over
& got Marion in A.M. & they worked at the hay loader. They had too go
too Prosper in P.M. & get some repairs. We went up town awhile in eve. Ruth
was here a few minutes at noon. She bro't a pretty pin from Arthur for
me that he had sent by mistake too her. I also got a bottle of perfume from
him here at home. She got a bottle of perfume too. Cool nite.
Fri. July 6
Nice day. Mon went & got Marion & they worked at the hay loader all
day. Dean helped Louie hay in P.M. I went over to Pearl's awhile in P.M.
Cool nite. Had a letter from Arthur today.
Sat. July 7
Nice day. Mon plowed corn in A.M. We went too Decorah in P.M. I got my hair
fixed. We went up town in eve. Cold nite.
Sun. July 8
Nice in A.M. but clouded up about 2 & rained quite hard. Looked like a bad
storm. Dean went over & got Ruth about 10. She, Mon & I went too the
Joan of Arc picnic at the swimming pool. We rode around Decorah awhile before
the picnic. Quite a crowd out & we had a swell dinner. Dean went fishing
with Clyde & the bunch. He went with them again in eve.
Mon. July 9
Nice day but cool. Mon worked at the hay loader almost all day. Ruth came over
at noon too get Dean too help hay in P.M. We went up town a little while in
eve. Had a letter from Arthur today but it was written June 14th. Cold nite.
Tues. July 10
Only about 45º this morn. Coldest July 10th for many years. Cool all day
& quite windy but nice & bright. Dean mowed the lawn & hoed potatoes
in A.M. & then helped Howard hay in P.M. Mon hoed potatoes until about 11
& then we went too Decorah for me too take a "shot". We were
not down there very long. Got home about 12:30 & Mon plowed corn in P.M.
There was a bad accident in front of John Carolan's about 9:30. A car
& truck collided. Pearl was here a couple of times today. Cold nite.
Wed. July 11
42º this morn. Quite a nice day. Warmed up quite a little. I washed &
ironed. Mon plowed corn. Dean hoed potatoes in A.M. & helped Howard hay
in P.M. I was over at Howard's a minute in A.M. Baby Dean is quite bad.
Ruth was here a minute at noon. We had a letter from Arthur. Went up town in
eve. There was a party at the Hall for Paul McConnell who is home on furlough.
We came home at supper time. Dean went & got Iona. He bro't us home
& then took her home. Sprinkled some in the nite.
Thurs. July 12
Cool in A.M. early but warmed up later & was a pretty warm day. Mon &
Dean went over too Marion's & got a jag of corn & then when they
got back they moved the brooder house & got it leveled up & the yard
partly fixed before dinner. Marion came home with them & stayed for dinner.
Dean helped Howard hay in P.M. Mon & Marion went up town just after dinner
& then Mon took Marion home & came back & plowed corn. I was over
at Pearl's in P.M. Baby is quite bad.
Fri. July 13
Nice day. Dean helped Howard most of the day. Gilbert T. came over this A.M.
& bought Duke. Mon took Duke over for him & then plowed corn the rest
of the day. Pearl was over in P.M. Baby is better.
Sat. July 14
Nice day. Mon plowed corn in A.M. We went too Decorah in P.M. Marion, Mama &
Ruth went along. Mama came home too supper with us. Dean got a hair cut today.
I went over too Gladys Peacock's in eve.
Sun. July 15
Little daughter born to Mr. & Mrs. Dean Leonhart. Nice day. Mon & Dean
took Bernice, Lizzie & I too church in A.M. Mon & I went fishing down
on Fred Walters in P.M. Didn't get many. We went down too Claude's
in eve. Marion, Marie & Marjorie came up today. Marion went too Decorah
so we didn't see him. Marjorie is cute girl. Cool nite.
Mon. July 16
Rather cloudy most of the day. Not too warm. Dean plowed corn with the horses.
Harry Q. & the boys were here in A.M. Mon hoed potatoes awhile in A.M. We
went too Prosper & B.O. in P.M. Dean went over too Howard's in eve.
Dean got a box from Arthur today. A pipe & a couple of Nazi arm bands from
Paris. Rained most of the nite I guess.
Tues. July 17
Not such a nice day. Rained off & on in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. &
was nicer & warmer. We went too Decorah about 11:30. Lizzie went with us.
She & I each got a permanent. Mon got a hair cut. Very very large crowd
in Decorah. Mon & Dean went up town in eve.
Wed. July 18
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed corn most of the day & then
he mowed hay awhile. Mon hoed potatoes & then later in P.M. he plowed corn.
Got a letter from Arthur.
Thurs. July 19
Dandy nice warm day. Really quite warm. The men mowed hay & plowed corn
& then late in P.M. we put one load of hay in the barn. Mon & I went
over too Marion's a few minutes in eve. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Fri. July 20
Rained some early in A.M. but cleared off in A.M. & was a plenty hot day.
Mon & I went too Decorah in A.M. Got back about 1. Mon plowed corn in P.M.
Dean mowed the lawn, mowed weeds & did odd jobs. Had a hard storm in the
nite. Rained about 5 inches. Hard thunder, lightning & wind. Hot nite.
Sat. July 21
Hot day. Mon went & got Marion in A.M. Clyde & Allen came along down
with him & we all went too Decorah. Plenty hot down there. Mama rode up
from Aunt Lissa's with us & came home too supper with us. We went
up town in eve. Dean came home some time after we did.
Sun. July 22
Hot day. Clyde came down early in A.M. & Dean went over too Ed K's
with him & spent the day. Mon took Bernice & I too Church & then
we were there for dinner. Dave, Lizzie & Maxine were there in P.M. too.
Ruth, Mrs. K. & Shirley E. were here awhile late in P.M. Dean took the car
in eve & took Iona Y. home from Ed's. Hot nite.
Mon. July 23
Hot day. I washed & ironed. Dean mowed hay in A.M. Harry, Artie & Virginia
came with their tractor & wagon in P.M. & they put 7 loads of hay in
the barn. Hot nite. Got a letter from Isa today.
Tues. July 24
Rather cloudy & stormy looking early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice
until late in P.M. it clouded up again & looked quite stormy but we just
got a little shower. Very hot day. Cooled off in eve after the shower. Mon &
Dean went too Bluffton early in A.M. too fix the telephone line. Harry &
the kids came over & they got in 3 more loads of hay before dinner. Mon
plowed corn in P.M. & Dean mowed hay. They & the horses nearly cooked.
We went up town in eve. Dean went too Decorah with Marvin.
Wed. July 25
Not quite such a hot day. Quite a relief. Nice bright day. Mon plowed corn in
A.M. & Dean mowed. Harry's came over in P.M. & they worked all
P.M. getting the hay poles & getting them up. I was down in the field awhile
& then Vera came back up too the house with me. We had a letter from Arthur
today.
Thurs. July 26
Nice day. Quite warm. Mon plowed corn part of the time & helped put up hay
part time. They put in one load before dinner & then all P.M. I was down
there awhile. We went up town in eve. Artie mowed the lawn this P.M.
Fri. July 27
Nice day part of the day. Clouded up in P.M. & looked like it might rain
all P.M. but it didn't until about 7 P.M. & then we did have a hard
storm. Rained very hard. Mon plowed corn part of the time. He finished plowing
corn today. They put up hay. Finished up the stack in P.M. & put a jag in
the barn. Mon took me up too Gladys just after dinner & I went too Club
with her. Club met at Catherine H's. Quite a few out & we had a swell
lunch.
Sat. July 28
Had a letter from Arthur. Not too nice a day. Cooler & partly cloudy &
damp. We went to Decorah in A.M. I got my hair fixed. We got a letter from Arthur.
Went up town in eve. Baby Dean Walters died about 1 P.M. Mrs. Curtis Foltz had
a baby today but it died. Bad accident down by Walter Stortz's in eve.
Mart Leonhart & the Sexton boys. Dean & Iona bro't us home from
town & then Dean took Iona home. I went over too Howard's awhile after
supper.
Sun. July 29
Quite a nice day. Mon took me too church in A.M. I went too Lutheran Church.
The Gilbertson family gave a beautiful picture too the church in memory of Neal
& that was unveiled at the service. I was over too Howard's awhile
in P.M. Ruth came over late in P.M. & stayed for supper.
Mon. July 30
Rained early in A.M. & was mostly cloudy all day. We went up town at noon.
Went too Baby Dean W's. funeral at the Lutheran Church. After the funeral
I went up too Nora Gossman's to a surprise birthday party for Beulah Stead.
Quite a few there & we had a swell lunch. Dean went over too Howard's
in eve. We had a letter from Arthur.
Tues. July 31
Mighty hot day. I washed & ironed. The men sprayed the potatoes & did
some other jobs in A.M. & then Mon went up too Fritz's in P.M. with
the tractor too start cutting his grain. They didn't get too much grain
cut. Had too fix the binder first & then the grain was down etc. Dean mowed
thistles & weeds down in the north pasture with the mower in P.M. It clouded
up late in P.M. & looked mighty stormy but we only had a couple of little
showers. Not enough too stop work but it did cool off a little. We went up town
a little while in eve. Harry & Artie were here a while early in A.M.
Wed. Aug. 1
Quite a nice day. Plenty warm but with a cool breeze from the north. Mon cut
grain at Fritz's in A.M. & Dean mowed weeds with the ssythe. Dean
went up too Fritz's in P.M. & run the tractor & Mon, Mama, Mrs.
K. & I went to Cresco. We were there awhile & then we went too Decorah
awhile. Mama came home too supper with us & Mon & I took her home in
eve. There was a shower dance at Matter's for Mr. & Mrs. Maryln Cassel
in eve but none of us went.
Thurs. Aug. 2
Nice day. Dean went up too Fritz's & drove the tractor in the grain
field. They finished up there in P.M. Mon went too Decorah in A.M. too get repairs
for the binder but he couldn't get them. I went with him in P.M. too Mabel
& then on too Harmony but we couldn't get the repairs.
Fri. Aug. 3
Nice day. Mon went up & got Fritz's binder in A.M. & Fritz came
down too run it so they started cutting grain here in A.M. Artie Q. was over
& mowed the lawn in P.M. We had a letter from Arthur today.
Sat. Aug. 4
Rather cloudy all day. Rained quite hard in P.M. & then we had a hard storm
in the nite or rather very early Sun. morn. We had over 6 inches of rain with
plenty of lightning thunder & wind. The men worked in the grain field until
they were rained out. Fritz was here again today. We went up town in eve. An
ice cream Social at the church. I went up a little while. Dean & Iona came
home with us & then Dean took her home. We got a box from Arthur today.

Sun. Aug. 5
Not very nice until late in P.M. It cleared off then & was nice. Rather
cool. I went too church with Bernice, Maxine, Lizzie & Betty Cassel. Dean
was gone all day. Plenty of high water in the creeks & river today. Howard
was over in eve. The power went off in the storm in the nite & didn't
come back until about noon. First "Atomic Bomb" dropped on Japan
today.
Mon. Aug. 6
Nice day & a little cooler with quite a wind. It sprinkled some late in
P.M. I washed & ironed. Fritz was down & they finished cutting grain
here about 4:30. Dean shocked. Clyde was here awhile just after dinner. Pearl
was here in A.M. We had a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. Aug. 7
Nice day but chilly. The men finished shocking in A.M. & went too Decorah
in P.M. Ruth came over at noon & she & I went up too Mama's &
tied a quilt. We had a letter from Arthur.
Wed. Aug. 8
Nice day. Somewhat warmer. Dean mowed hay almost all day. Mon & I went too
Decorah in A.M. The men bro't in a load of hay about 5 P.M. & we put
it in the barn. Dean took the tractor up town in eve & got some air in the
tires. Gust & Kate were down in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 9
Nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & sprinkled a little about supper
time. Harry came over in A.M. & they put up the hay poles & then put
up hay. Mon mowed in A.M. & P.M. awhile. We went up town awhile in eve.
Got 2 letters from Arthur today. Second "Atomic Bomb" dropped on
Japan today & Russia entered the war against Japan today.
Fri. Aug. 10
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & some times quite hard.
It cleared off late in P.M. & was quite nice for a while. Cool. Harry &
Artie were here early in A.M. & Artie mowed the lawn. Mon & Dean hauled
a couple of loads of corn over from Marions with the tractor. Marion was here
for dinner. Dean went too a shower dance at Matters in eve with Marvin on Mr.
& Mrs. [Grubel?]. We had a letter from Arthur today. Big peace rumors from
Japan today.
Sat. Aug. 11
Rather a dark cloudy damp day. Sun shone a little in P.M. Cleared off about
supper time. The men did odd jobs in A.M. Harry was here a while. We went over
& got Marion after dinner & went too Decorah. Ruth Knoke & her cousin
rode down & back with us too. I got my hair fixed. We went up town in eve.
Alan Q. rode home with us. Had a letter from Arthur that came in just a week.
Sun. Aug. 12
Quite a warm day. Harry was here early in A.M. Mon took me too church. Harry
came after an early dinner & they finished putting up what hay was down.
That finished up the stack. Quite a few of the neighbors worked in the fields
today. Gust & Kate were down awhile in eve.
Mon. Aug. 13
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men threshed at Fred's. It
clouded up late in P.M. & started too rain a little before 8 & kept
it up until after 10. Raining very hard all that time & then not so hard
for some time after that. Lots of bad thunder & lightning too. The men didn't
get home until after 8 so they were milking during the worst of the storm. Had
a letter from Isa today.
Tues. Aug. 14
Nice day but quite windy & cool. Mon went up too Fritz's in A.M. &
then he went up there again at noon & borrowed his binder & he &
Dean cut the timothy in P.M. Dean went too see Iona in eve. Had a letter from
Loyal today. Japan surrendered today.
Wed. Aug. 15
Nice day but cool. Howard helped the men & they shocked the timothy in A.M.
We went up town after dinner but every thing was closed up so we came home &
changed our clothes & went too Canton too the "Day Off". Nothing
much doing & not too big a crowd up there. Art W. was here awhile after
we got home. Everything closed everywhere with no mail service.
Thurs. Aug. 16
Not very nice early in A.M. Rather dark & damp but cleared off & was
a nice cool day. The men went too Fred's & threshed. They finished
at Fred's & got started at Roy's about 4. I helped Bernice in
P.M. Maxine was there too. We went up town a little while in eve. No mail service
today.
Fri. Aug. 17
Nice day. Plenty warm. We were all at Roy's all day threshing, finished
about 6 P.M. Maxine Bernice & I went up town a few minutes in P.M. Howard
was here awhile after chores. Aunt Eunice, Earl & Wilma were here a little
while late in eve too. We had a letter from Arthur today.
Sat. Aug. 18
Mighty warm day. Nice & bright. The men threshed at Howard's. They
got through there about 2:30 & then took their bath's & did up
chores early & we went too Decorah. Did the trading & then went down
too the Fair. Had our supper down there. Very large crowd there. I went up in
the Grand Stand for the free acts. Then ran around awhile & then Mon &
I went too the car & sat awhile until Dean & Iona came. We got home
about 1:30.
Sun. Aug. 19
Hot day. Mon took Bernice & I too church in A.M. & we slept most of
P.M. Dean Iona Clyde & Edna went for a picnic & fishing in P.M. They
came back here for supper with 6 fish. Stayed here until about 10 & then
Dean took them home. Warm nite.
Mon. Aug. 20
Quite a warm day until after supper the wind changed too the north & it
got much cooler. It was very nice until about 4 P.M. it clouded up & looked
& sounded quite stormy but we just had 2 or 3 little showers. Not enough
too stop threshing. Had a shower in eve too. Mon went up & got Mama early
in A.M. & she helped cook for threshers. Bernice helped too. They finished
here about 2:30 & went up too Fritz's. Finished there too. We took
Mama home in eve. Cool nite.
Tues. Aug. 21
Not very nice in A.M. Cool, dark & damp. Sprinkled off & on all A.M.
& on into P.M. Cleared off later in P.M. & the sun shone. Mon went over
too Marion's in A.M. awhile. We went over & got him & then up
& got Mama in P.M. & went too Decorah. Very large crowd in town. Mon
took Dean & I down too the Hospital about 4 too see Marvin. He had gone
after the cows last nite with his gun & slipped & shot himself through
the wrist. We had a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. Aug. 22
Nice day. They threshed at Ludvig's & Gust's today & were
rather late getting home. I washed & ironed. Dean went over to Iona's
in eve. Marvin is coming good.
Thurs. Aug. 23
Nice day. The men threshed at Ole's. I went too L.A.S. with Maxine &
Bernice. Aunt Alice & Mrs. Powers entertained. Quite a crowd out & a
nice dinner. Ruth bro't me home after dinner & spent the P.M. &
was here for supper. The men were rather late getting home. Marvin came home
from the Hospital today. Cold nite.
Fri. Aug. 24
45º this morn. Nice day but cool until late in P.M. it clouded up &
looked mighty stormy but it didn't storm. The wind blew hard in eve for
a while. Dean threshed at Vines today. Mon went over too Marions awhile in A.M.
He mowed the road sides in P.M. Went up town late in P.M. a minute.
Sat. Aug. 25
42º this morn. Nice cool day. Dean threshed at Vines. We went over &
got Marion about 11 & went too Decorah. I got my hair fixed & Mon got
a hair cut. Saw Ruth, Francis & Harriet. They were in Decorah too Larry
Keefe's funeral. Marion came home too supper with us. We went up town
in eve. Dean went over & got Iona & bro't her to B.O. They bro't
us home & then Dean took her home. We had a letter from Arthur today.

Nice day. Not too warm. Dean went over too Iona's & spent the day.
Mon took me too Church in A.M. We went down on Fred W's fishing in P.M.
Drove the car & went around by Marion's. Stopped there a minute on
our way home.

Nice day. Not too warm but plenty windy. I washed & ironed. Dean threshed
at Vine's in A.M. & part of P.M. Mon went over too Harry's about
2:30. They threshed out what Harry had there at home in P.M. School started
in our district today with Mary Whalen Macha as teacher.
Tues. Aug. 28
Rained a little early this A.M. but dried off so they finished threshing at
Harry's in P.M. We went up town a while in eve. Pretty warm day.
Wed. Aug. 29
Had a hard storm early this A.M. Rained, hailed some. Hard thunder & lightning
but cleared off & was a nice day, but plenty hot. The men didn't do
much of any thing. Dean went over too Iona's in eve. It looked like a
very bad storm in the nite, but we just got a lot of thunder & lightning
& no rain. It cooled off a little though.
Thurs. Aug. 30
Mighty warm day again. Harry Q. was here in A.M. We threshed our timothy in
P.M. Bernice helped me. We went up town in eve. Part of the W.S.C.S. (the S.W.
division) had a food sale at Fred Glice's in eve. Took in over $16. We
had a letter from Arthur today.

Not too nice a day. Sprinkled off & on & looked quite rainy at times.
Mon went over too Marion's in A.M. & Marion came home too dinner with
him. They took the tractor & wagon over there in P.M. & got a jag of
corn. They also bro't the cattle home from over there.

Quite a nice day. Mon went over & got Marion & we went too Decorah about
11. Aunt Eunice rode down too Aunt Lissa's from Dave's with us.
Not too big a crowd in town. Marion came home too supper with us. We went up
town in eve. Dean went over & got Iona. We took Marion home also [Wes? Harriet?]
down too Bill L's. Dean took Iona home after that.

Nice day. Rather cool. Mon & Dean took me too church in A.M. Dean went fishing
in P.M. & got a nice bunch. Mrs. [Bender?] was here & spent the P.M.
Mon & I took her over too Dave's about 4:30. Ruth came over &
stayed for supper.
Mon. Sept. 3
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Looked stormy
awhile in P.M. Quite a windy day. The men did odd jobs in A.M. Ruth came over
in P.M. & got Dean & he helped Louie put up some hay. Mon put up some
roosts in the brooder house. We had a couple of spring chickens for supper.

Tues. Sept. 4
Nice day & plenty warm. I washed & ironed. The men put a fence around
the hay stacks today & pumped the water out of the cistern. Ruth was here
awhile just after dinner. We had 2 letters from Arthur today.
Wed. Sept. 5
Nice day. Plenty warm. The men cleaned out the cistern & got it all fixed
up too use again & did other odd jobs. Dean went over too Iona's in
eve.
Thurs. Sept. 6
Nice hot day again. I went up town about 10:30 with Bernice, Maxine & Dave's,
too L.A.S. at the church. Bernice & Lizzie entertained. Quite a crowd out
& we had a dandy dinner. Mon & Dean came too B.O. after me about 1 &
we went too Decorah. I got my hair fixed. We went up town in eve. I went up
too Mama's awhile. Olive & Mrs. Gjetly were there.
Fri. Sept. 7
Nice day. Plenty hot. Mon went over too Marion's in A.M. & Marion
came home too dinner with him. Mon took Maxine, Ruth & I too club at Maude's
in P.M. Quite a few out & we had a good lunch. Had a shower for Maxine.
Marion & Mon came after us about 5 & Marion stayed for supper. Mon took
him home after chores. Rained in the nite.
Sat. Sept. 8
Not very nice early in A.M. Sprinkled & was dark. Cleared off later &
was a nice day only some cooler. Dean went about 9 & got Iona & Ruth
& then he changed his clothes & we went too La Crosse. We had dinner
& then Mon & I took Ruth out too the depot & we waited there until
her train went at 3:15. She went back too Hammond. We shopped around after that.
Dean got a new suit. Iona got a dress & hat. We got home about 7. Did the
chores & went back too B.O. The kids bro't us home & then Dean
took Iona home.
Sun. Sept. 9
Rather windy & chilly. Although it wasn't too bad. Mon took Dean &
I too church in A.M. I went too B.O. in P.M. too Rosalie Kneeskern & Donald
Yarwood's wedding at the M.E. Church at 4 P.M. It was very nice. I went
with Roy's. It rained in the eve. Cool nite.
Mon. Sept. 10
Quite nice in A.M. but plenty windy & cool but it clouded up about noon
& sprinkled off & on in P.M. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean took
care of the pigs in A.M. Mon went over & got Marion about noon & he
was here too dinner with us. They went up town in P.M. Mrs. Seelye died this

Rather funny day. Sprinkled, sun shine, clouds, etc. Cool & windy. Mon dug
some potatoes. Dean went up too Gust's & got the manure spreader in
A.M. The men got a jag of green corn in P.M. for the hogs. Got 2 letters from
Arthur today.
Wed. Sept. 12
Nice day but cool. Mon dug some potatoes in A.M. & Dean cleaned out the
hog house & hauled out some manure in A.M. He finished painting the house
in P.M. Mon & I went too Mrs. Seelye's funeral at the M.E. Church
in P.M. Quite a few out. Mon was a pall bearer. Florence E., Olive, Lillian
S. & I sang "Shall We Meet" & "Rock of Ages".
We had a letter from Arthur today. Dean went over too Howard's awhile
in eve. Had a letter from Ruth today.
Thurs. Sept. 13
Nice day. Rather cool. We went too Decorah about 10:30. Took Mama along. Dean
took his drivers tests today & passed O.K. Fred Kneeskern rode up from Decorah
with us & then we took Mama home & then him. Dean went over too Iona's
in eve & went on too Mae Knoke's chiravari. We had a letter from Arthur.

Quite a nice day but rather cool. The men dug potatoes & got a jag of corn
etc. Mon helped Howard a while after dinner too get his new garage laid out.
I canned a crate of peaches in P.M. Dean went over too Howard's in eve.

Quite a nice day but cool. We went too Decorah about 11. Quite a few in town.
Dr. [Spreate?]'s funeral was this P.M. so about everything in Decorah
was closed from 2 until 3. We went up town in eve. Dean went over too Iona's
& they went too Mabel & then back too B.O. & bro't us home
& then Dean took her home. We had 2 letters from Arthur today telling us
that he was coming home.

Quite a nice day but cool & rather windy. Mon & Dean took Bernice, Maxine
& I too church in A.M. Dean went squirrel hunting in P.M. & got 1. Mon
went fishing & got a few fish.
Mon. Sept. 17
Quite a nice day but quite windy. I washed & ironed. Dean finished dragging
the potatoes in A.M. & then he painted in P.M. Mon went up too Ole's
in A.M. & got the cement mixer for Howard. He did odd jobs the rest of the
day. Dean went over too Howard's in eve. Had 2 letters from Ruth today.
Tues. Sept. 18
Nice day. Quite a lot warmer. Dean painted most of the day. He is doing the
trimming now. Mon helped Howard put in cement in P.M. Had a letter from Isa
today.
Wed. Sept. 19
Not very nice day. Sprinkled off & on in A.M. & rained quite a little
in P.M. Quite hard at times. Got colder late in P.M. The men painted a little
in A.M. but then it got too wet. We went too Decorah in P.M. Had a letter from
Arthur today. Dean went over too Iona's in eve & they went too Matters.
He went in the ditch coming home but didn't get hurt any.

Our 29th Wedding Anniversary. Nice day but cool & rather windy. Mon went
too Prosper in A.M. & he painted roof in P.M. Dean hauled manure. I went
too L.A.S. with Bernice, Maxine & Lizzie. Picnic lunch & a dandy good
dinner. Quite a few out. Mon & I went too Harmony in eve too the show "Three
In a Family". It was sure funny. Beautiful nite but cool.
Fri. Sept. 21
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy nice day. Dean hauled
manure all day. Mon finished painting the roof. Mr. Klinker bro't our
new disc up this A.M. Mary Macha was here after supper for her order.
Sat. Sept. 22
Not very nice day. Cool. Rained off & on during the day & sometimes
quite hard. Dean helped Louie K. for a while in A.M. sawing wood until it rained
too hard. We went too Decorah in A.M. Marion & Dave went along. I got my
hair fixed. We went up town in eve. Got much warmer in eve.

Quite a nice day. Quite warm. Dean took me too church & then after church
he, Clyde & Edna went over too Iona's & spent the day & eve.
Had quite a rain in the eve. It looked like a very bad storm & we did get
plenty of thunder, lightning & rain with some wind.

Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Dean helped
Louie awhile in A.M. sawing wood. Mon was out fixing telephone lines most of
the day. Dean did odd jobs in P.M.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon mowed hay all day. Dean painted. We went up
town awhile in eve. Had a card from Ruth.

Not such a nice day. Cloudy in A.M. & rained in P.M. Had quite a hard shower
late in P.M. & in eve too. Dean helped Roy put up hay until about 3 P.M.
Mon did odd jobs. He went up town in A.M. Dean & I went too Bluffton late
in P.M. We had an announcement of Loyal's wedding.

Not very nice day. Sprinkled & rained most of the day. The men went up town
in P.M. Dean went up again in eve.
Fri. Sept. 28
Cool rainy day. Not at all nice. Mon & Dean took me too Club at Gladys Knoke's
in P.M. Good crowd out & we had a good lunch. Had a card from Arthur &
we also got the binoculars he sent. Cleared off in eve & was a beautiful
nite. Had a letter from Ruth too that had been missent to Portland Oregon.

22º. Hard freeze. Cold in the early A.M. but warmed up some during the
day. Not such a bad day. Mon went over & got Marion & we went too Decorah.
Mama came back from Davenport today & she came home with us. Iona came home
too supper with us too. We went up town in eve. The kids bro't us home
& then Dean took Iona home. Cool nite again but it didn't freeze.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Not too hard until late in P.M.
It rained quite hard. We went down too Claude's & spent the day. Had
a good time. The clocks of the nation were turned back to Standard time today
after these years of Daylight Saving time.

Chilly damp day. Rained off & on in A.M. but didn't rain so much in
P.M. Mon, Dean & Roy went too McArthur's Sale in P.M.

Nice day but quite windy. I washed & ironed. Dean fixed fence & Mon
did odd jobs & cut some corn by hand. We went up town in eve.

Dandy nice day but quite windy. The men hauled up corn in A.M. & then we
put 2 loads of hay in the barn in P.M. Donnie Baker came in A.M. & he painted
the bed room sitting room & most of the kitchen. Dean went over too Iona's
in eve.
Thurs. Oct. 4
Nice day. Mon went too Decorah early in A.M. for more paint. Dean cut the beans
in A.M. We finished putting in the rest of the hay in P.M. Donnie was here &
papered the bed room & sitting room & finished the painting in the kitchen.
Mon & I went up town in eve. Leonard Wicks got home today from the Service.
He has his discharge. We saw him up town & he looks just fine & is fine
too.

Beautiful day again. The men raked & piled up beans. Donnie was here until
after dinner. He finished up the papering & painting in these 3 rooms. Claude's
were over & spent the eve.

Nice day. Dean filled silo at Harold Seelye's for Ole today. Mon piled
up beans for awhile in A.M. & then we went up & got Mama & went
too Decorah. I got my hair fixed. Mama came home too supper with us & then
we went up town in eve. Dean went over too Iona's in eve.
Sun. Oct. 7
Very nice until late in P.M. It got quite cold & windy. The men took me
too church & then we went up too Mama's & spent the rest of the
day. Claude's were there too & we had a good time, the boys especially.
Charlotte & the kiddies were there in P.M. too. Lawrence & Gert &
baby were there a little while.

28º this morn. Frost. Nice day, but windy. I washed. The men finished piling
up the beans in A.M. & they picked a load of corn in P.M. Mon & I went
too Decorah about 4 to get my glasses fixed. Gust & Ray were here early
in A.M. Dean went over too Howard's in eve & then on up town. We had
a letter from Arthur today & he hadn't started for home yet when that
was written Sept. 24th. Cold nite.

Dandy nice day. Mon helped Roy haul in his baled hay until about 4:30 P.M. Dean
got a jag of corn in A.M. & then he went too Roy's in P.M. Mon bought
a load of the baled hay so they bro't it over here when they were through
over at Roy's.

28º this morn. Warmed up & was a dandy nice day. We went too Decorah
about 10. Marion went with us. Large crowd in town. Mon & Dean each got
a hair cut. We went up town in eve. Came home early.

Rather cloudy & damp early in A.M. but it cleared off & was a grand
day. Albert, Florence & Shirley came a little after 9 & Mon & I
went too Mason City with them. We took our dinner & went too Charles. Got
there about 11:45. Stayed there until about 5 & then we all went too Clear
Lake & then on up too [Harlantown?] where Shirley teaches. Left her there
& then we came home. Got here at 9. Had a grand time. Dean had company too.

Beautiful day. The men picked corn in A.M. Mon went back too Kneeskern's
this P.M. & got some more potatoes. Dean painted storm windows & some
other windows. We got 14 bushels.

Rather damp in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was just grand. Roy cut our
corn today. He got through about 3. Dean painted some in A.M. & then he
& Mon shocked corn until it got too dry in P.M. & then Dean painted
again. We went up town a few minutes in eve.

Beautiful day. Nice & warm. The men finished shocking corn in A.M. &
then they did odd jobs in P.M. Mon spaded up a place for me too put my tulip
bulbs & I got most of them out. Dean painted. He went up town in eve. We
had a little calf today. Had a letter from Ruth.

Nice day but much cooler. The men picked corn in A.M. & finished up painting
the brooder house in P.M. Dean went too a dance in eve.

didn't rain. The men finished stacking beans about 3 P.M. Dean went too
Bluffton & got a couple of chicken crates & we gathered up 60 young
roosters in eve.

Sprinkled some in A.M. & was rather a dark day. The men picked a load of
corn in A.M. & helped Roy stack beans in P.M. Dean went over too Iona's
in eve. I sold 60 young roosters too Glen Clark this morning. The 60 weighed
192 lbs. @ .18 per lb & bro't $34.56.

Little son born to Maxine & Arlin about midnite. Beautiful day. Dean took
me too church in A.M. He went over too Iona's as soon as he bro't
me home & stayed the rest of the day & in the eve. Her father had a
bad spell in P.M. at [Henry?] Barth's so he had too stay there. Dean &
some of the rest did his chores. Mon went hunting in P.M. but didn't get
anything.

then Dean helped Ole shingle their new hen house the rest of the day. Mon &
I went too Cresco in P.M. I broke my glasses so took them over there & left

Rather cloudy & windy but not a bad day. The men started working at the
machine shed. We went too B.O. in eve & I went on too Prosper with Florence
too the L.A.S. Sale & Lunch. Quite a crowd out & they had nice things
too sell & everything went good. Had a nice lunch. Dean went over too Iona's
a few minutes. Mr. Y. is very bad.

in A.M. & then worked at the machine shed. Dean went over too Howard's
in eve a few minutes. It rained a good share of the nite. Lots of lightning

day. Every thing froze up this morn. The men picked a load of corn in A.M. &

got a permanent. She came home too supper with us & then we went up town
in eve. Dean went over too Iona's awhile. Mr. Y. is about the same. Had

day some. Dean took Bernice & I too church. He, Clyde & Edna went over
too Youngs in P.M. & then Iona went too the first show at Decorah with them.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed. The men picked a load of
corn in A.M. & then Mon went over too Roy's & got his plow &
started plowing in P.M. We had a telegram from Arthur this morn that he was
in the States. Pearl & the little ones were here awhile in A.M. Got a letter
& card from Ruth. Arthur called home about 6:30 P.M. & did it ever seem
good too hear his voice. He landed in the States last nite about 9. He called
from N.J.
Tues. Nov. 6
Regular summer day. Very nice & bright in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. &
sprinkled some. Dean plowed in A.M. & helped Ludvigs saw wood in P.M. for
awhile. Mon put paper on the south doors & I washed windows & he put
on storm windows in A.M. He plowed in P.M. Roy took Bernice & I up town
about 1 & we helped clean the basement at the church. Dean came after us
about 4:30. Dean went down too Breezy Hill in eve too a Veterans Turkey Fest
with Clyde. Got a letter from Isa.

Not such a nice day but not too bad. Mon plowed & Dean got a load of corn.
Rained hard in the night. Regular summer storm. Very severe thunder & lightning.

Rained very hard early in A.M. & then kept it up off & on all day. Got
much colder in P.M. Cold nite. The men filled in the cellar way today. Arthur
called about 4:30 from Camp McCoy.

16º this morn. Cold windy day but nice & bright. Glen Rollins came
about 10 & took 10 head of cattle too Decorah for us too the Sale. The men
got a load of corn in A.M. & then we went too Decorah in P.M. The men both
got hair cuts. I got a new coat. $21.93. Dean went over too Iona's in
eve. Marion was here for dinner.

12º this morn. Quite a nice day, but cool but it warmed up some. The men
got a load of corn early in A.M. & then they went too Decorah about 11.
Marion went with them & came back too supper with them. We went up town
in eve. Ludvig & Jimmie W. rode home with Mon & I. Dean came later.
We had another little calf this morning.

Ruth got home this A.M. early. Rather a cloudy dark day but not so cold. Rather
windy. Dean took Bernice & I too church & then he went over too Iona's
in P.M. Got back at supper time. Mr. Y. is quite a little better. I went over
too Dave's in P.M. too see Maxine & the baby. He is sure nice. Arthur
called from Camp McCoy tonite.

Rainy nasty day. Rained very hard at times too. Not so cold. Louie bro't
Ruth over about 10:30 & she had dinner with us & then we went too La
Crosse after Arthur. He got in there about 3:30, & were we ever glad too
see him. He looks so good. Howard & Arthur W. were here a few minutes at
supper time. Claude's were up in eve. Arthur took Ruth home about 10.
Wind blew terribly hard for a while in eve.
Tues. Nov. 13
Not a very nice day. Cloudy. Got colder during the day & froze up. Mon &
Dean picked a load of corn in A.M. & then Dean went over & got Marion
& bro't him over for dinner. Arthur went over too Krumm's in
P.M. so he took Marion home. Arthur didn't come home then until in the
nite. Howards were over too see him in eve but he wasn't here.

Not too nice a day & not too bad. I washed & ironed. The men picked
corn in A.M. & Mon worked some at the machine shed in P.M. Arthur &
Ruth went too Decorah & spent the day. He got a bunch of clothes. Albert
E's. were here in eve. Arlin was here awhile to. Dean went over too Iona's
in eve.

Quite a nice day. The boys picked a load of corn in A.M. Mon worked at the machine
shed. Arthur went over too Krumm's about noon. Roy took Bernice &
I too B.O. about 10:45 too the M.E.L.A.S. dinner & Sale. Large crowd out.
Had a good dinner & so many nice things too sell. I helped Anita with selling
tickets & keeping books of the sale. Mr. [Juve?] cried the sale. Took in
over $300. Roy came after us about 5. Harold Seelye took a hog too Decorah for
us this A.M. too have it butchered.

Not such a nice day but not too bad. The boys picked a load of corn in A.M.
Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & they worked at the shed. Arthur
went over & got Ruth in P.M. & she was here for supper. Mon took Marion
home after chores & Arthur took Ruth home about 10.
Sat. Nov. 17
Not too bad a day but rather cloudy most of the day. Cleared off late in P.M.
The men got a load of corn in A.M. & then went too Decorah. I went with
Ruth & Mrs. K. up too Nora Gossman's in P.M. too a "shower"
for Ruth. Not too many out. Had a nice time & a nice lunch. Ruth got mostly
money. We got home about 6. Arthur went over too K's in eve. Dean too
Iona's & Mon & I up town. We all came home about 11:30. Jimmie
W. rode home with us. Sold my old hens today. 60 weighed 216 @ .16¢ bro't
$34.56.

Nice day. Arthur & Dean went & got Ruth in A.M. & we went over too
Marions & spent the day. Albert's were there too. Had a good dinner.
Ruth stayed here until about 9 & then Arthur took her home. We celebrated
Marion's birthday.

Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went over & got Marion early
in A.M. & they worked at the shed all day. The boys got corn in A.M. Dean
went up town in P.M. & got a tire fixed. Arthur fooled around here. They
took Marion home after chores then went & got Ruth & went over too Iona's.
Tues. Nov. 20
Rather chilly all day with a south wind that was quite strong. Arthur went &
got Mama early in A.M. & he also got Marion who helped Mon with the shed.
They got it all done but the doors. Mama & I dressed chickens for Thanksgiving.
Dean picked corn in A.M. Arthur went too Decorah in A.M. He got back about 4.
Mon & I took Mama & Marion home after chores. Arthur went over too Krumm's.
We stopped for him on our way home. Dean went over too Howard's in eve.

Not very nice day. Snowed & blowed. Got colder late in P.M. We sold the
old sows too Mabel this A.M. The men all went too Mabel. Arthur went over too
K's in P.M. 10 sows weighed 2660 lbs. @ 13.55 & bro't $360.43,
2 weighed 590 lbs. @ $14.30 & bro't $84.37 so altogether they bro't
$444.80.

10º this morn. Thanksgiving Day. Cold, windy, blustery day. Snowed &
it blew & drifted in places. We went up too Mamas for the day. Ruth went
with us. Claude's & Dell's were there too. We had a swell dinner
& a good time. Cold nite & windy. Had a new little calf today.
Fri. Nov. 23
Not too bad a day but cool. We went too Decorah in A.M. & Mama went along.
We both got our hair fixed & Mon & Dean got hair cuts. Got home about
4. The boys went & got Ruth in eve & they went up too the church too
practice for tomorrow.

Dandy nice day. Arthur went up town in A.M. Dean went & got Iona after dinner.
Arthur & Ruth were married at the M.E. church by Rev. Weed of Decorah at
2:30. Dean & Doris Stead were their attendants. Gwen S. was flower girl.
Joyce S. played & Shirley sang. It was a beautiful wedding. Large crowd.
We went down too Krumms too a reception afterward. Dean & Iona took the
kids too Rochester about 5. They got back too B.O. about 10. Mon & I went
up town with Roy's in eve.

Not too nice a day & still not too bad. The men took Bernice & I too
church in A.M. Dean went over too Iona's awhile in P.M.
Mon. Nov. 26
Dark dreary day but not too cold. The men got a load of corn in A.M. & then
Mon went & got Marion & Mama & they were here for dinner & the
rest of the day. Dean picked corn in P.M. & Mon & Marion finished the
machine shed. Mama & I dressed 7 chickens for her too can. Dean & I
took her home & Marion went up town with us & then we took him home.
I met with some of the Club girls up town & we gathered names of the boys
still in Service too send Xmas cards to. It started too snow while we were up
town & it sure did snow for a while.
Tues. Nov. 27
Not very nice day. Not cold but damp & dark & rather chilly. Dean hauled
in hay & corn fodder in A.M. & Mon & I carried the pullets too the
hen house. We put 146 in. We went too Decorah in P.M. awhile. Went up town in
eve with Roy & Bernice. Florence, Muriel, Miriam, Elsie & we girls met
at Mama's too plan our lunch for Clyde Halse's Sale.

Not too nice a day but not too bad. I washed & did part of the ironing.
The men picked corn all day. Dean went over too Iona's in eve.

Not too bad a day but dark. The men picked corn all day. Mon took Bernice &
I too L.A.S. at the church about 11:30. Muriel & Mary Safford entertained.
Had a good dinner & a big crowd. Roy came & got us. Mon went up town
in eve.

Not very nice day. The men picked corn in A.M. They took me up town after dinner
& I went too Club at Iona's with Bill Breitsprechers from B.O. Quite
a few out & we had a good lunch & good time. Dean & I went up too
the school house in eve to their program. Good crowd out & a good program.
Had lunch too.

Rained very hard early in A.M. & kept up raining most of the day. Let up
some late in P.M. Not cold, just chilly. We went over & got Marion about
11 & went too Decorah. La Vern Q. rode down with us too. Quite a crowd in
town. Dean went over too Iona's in eve. We got a letter from Arthur &
Ruth. Every thing is covered with ice but it isn't slippery, too warm.

Not very nice day. Most of the ice gone this morn. Some what cooler today. No
church. Mr. & Mrs. Jarviss were here about 10 & then Mon & Dean
went out fixing the telephone line & it was in bad shape. They didn't
get back for dinner until about 3. Got colder at nite & froze.
Mon. Dec. 3
Cold day & dark. Mon & Dean were out almost all day working on telephone
lines.
Tues. Dec. 4
Not very nice day. Didn't do too much of anything. Dean went over too
Howard's in eve.
Wed. Dec. 5
Quite a nice day. Sun shone part of the day & it was warm & thawed some.
Dean hauled in hay & corn fodder in A.M. & they also hauled a load of
wood up too the house. They picked a load of corn in P.M. I washed & ironed.
Sold the rest of the young roosters this A.M. too Glen Clark. 55 roosters weighed
191 lbs. @ .18¢ per lb! & bro't $34.38.
Thurs. Dec. 6
Nice day. Quite warm & the sun shone most of the day. The men picked corn.
Arthur & Ruth got back this noon & they came over awhile in P.M. Dean
went over too Iona's in eve. It is her birthday. Pearl Walters went too
the Hospital at Decorah in P.M. for an operation for appendicitis.
Fri. Dec. 7
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. The men worked at the telephone lines until nearly
2 & then they had dinner & went out & got a load of corn. I went
over too Howard's a few minutes late in P.M.
Sat. Dec. 8
Quite a nice day. We went too Decorah about 10:30. Arthur, Ruth & Mama went
with us. I got my hair fixed. Very large crowd in town. Dean got a hair cut.
The folks all came home too supper with us & then we took them home in eve.
Dean went over too Iona's awhile in eve. Jimmie W. rode home from town
with us. Got much colder in eve & the wind blew hard.
Sun. Dec. 9
Cold windy day. Sun shone some but it snowed off & on during the day. Not
much, though. Dean took me too church in A.M. & then he went over too Iona's
& didn't come home until in the nite. Arthur & Ruth walked over
in P.M. & were here awhile.
Mon. Dec. 10
Very cold day but the sun shone all day. Mon & Dean took Bernice, Dave &
I down too Clyde Halse's about 10 & then they went out working on
the telephone lines. Clyde had a sale today & the M.E.L.A.S. served the
lunch. We served hot dogs, pie & cake, coffee & every thing went good.
Not too many at the sale. Too cold a day. Bernice & I came home with Roy.
We got home about 5:30. Served lunch in the house so we got along O.K.
Tues. Dec. 11
Quite a nice day & warmer. Donnie Baker came this morning & we tore
things up so he could fix the up stairs & pantry. Mon, Dean & I went
too Decorah a few minutes in P.M. after some paper, paint etc. Arthur walked
over in A.M. & Dean took him home about noon. Dean went over too Howard's
in eve.
Wed. Dec. 12
Quite a nice day. Donnie was here again today. It snowed hard in the nite. Dean
went over too Iona's in eve. Arnold Olson hung himself this morning.
Thurs. Dec. 13
Quite a warm day. Snowed most of A.M. but the sun shone in P.M. Donnie was here
again today. Mon & Arthur went too Harmony, Cresco & Decorah looking
for a tractor for Arthur. Dean hauled out manure & hauled in feed all day.
He used the sled. We went up town a little while in eve.
Fri. Dec. 14
Not too nice a day but not too bad. Rather dark & dreary. Donnie was here
all day again today. He finished up this P.M. Mon & Dean went out on the
telephone line in P.M. & also too B.O. got much colder in the nite.
Sat. Dec. 15
About 14 below this morn. Very cold day & rather windy. The sun shone most
of the day though. We went over & got Marion about 11 & went too Decorah.
Large crowd in town & plenty cool down there. Arthur & Mama rode home
from town with us. Art went with Louie & Mama with Alberts. The car froze
up just as we were leaving Decorah so we had too stop down there & get it
thawed out. Took Mama on home & stopped at Gordon's & got some
more anti freeze in it.
Sun. Dec. 16
8 below this morn. Nice bright day but cold & rather windy. Warmed up some
though.
Mon. Dec. 17
Nice bright day but very cold. We washed. Mon hung out all of the clothes. I
have quite a cold.
Tues. Dec. 18
Bright cold day. The men picked a jag of corn in P.M. Dean went over too Iona's
in eve & they went too a shower dance at Matters.
Wed. Dec. 19
Dandy nice day but cool. Ruth & Arthur came over & spent the day. We
made Xmas candy. The boys went down on the river & got Xmas trees in P.M.
& Ruth & Dean got ours up & decorated. Dean took the kids home about
4:30. Mon went up town in eve.
Thurs. Dec. 20
Nice bright day but cold. Mon & I went & got Arthur & Ruth about
10:30 & went too Decorah. Quite a crowd down there. Got home about 3. Dean
didn't feel too good with a cold. Got a box of delicious $5.79. Snowed
some in the nite.
Fri. Dec. 21
Somewhat warmer. Quite a nice day. Mon went over too Marion's awhile in
P.M. Dean went over too Howard's in eve. Got a letter from Isa.
Sat. Dec. 22
Cold day. We went over & got Marion & went too Decorah. I got my hair
fixed. Mon got a hair cut. Large crowd in town. Dean & I went too B.O. in
eve. Mon didn't feel very well so he stayed at home. Dean went over too
Iona's awhile & I went up too Aunt Alice's. The com. met there
too plan the Frank Perry Sale menu.
Sun. Dec. 23
Not very nice day. Dean took me too church & then he went over too Iona's
in P.M. awhile.
Mon. Dec. 24
Not very nice day. Misty & damp & dark. Not as cold. Dean took me too
B.O. in eve too the program at the M.E. church & then he went over too Iona's
awhile. Not very nice driving. Wind shield got covered with ice going up but
not as bad coming home. Not many out too the Xmas tree & program but they
had a good program what there was of it. So many sick too. Mon doesn't
feel too good.
Tues. Dec. 25
Dark day. Not so cold but surely not nice. Dean went & got Arthur, Ruth
& Mama & they were here & spent the day. We all got such nice Xmas
presents. Dean took them home about 4.
Wed. Dec. 26
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was quite a nice day. Mon
& Dean picked a jag of corn in P.M. Mon feels some better.
Thurs. Dec. 27
Quite a nice day. I washed. Dean went out working on the telephone lines. He
went over too Iona's in eve.
Fri. Dec. 28
Not such a very nice day but not too cold. Dean helped at Ole's all day.
Putting in a litter carrier. Mon took me too Club at Lenora Leistikows in P.M.
Not many out. Had Election of officers. Nora Gossman Pres. Anita B. Vice Pres.
Dorothea Reid Treas. I rode up town with Dorothea & then on home with Mon.
We stopped at Ole's & got Dean on our way home.
Sat. Dec. 29
Not such a cold day but chilly & damp & dark. Mon went over & got
Marion & we went too Decorah about 11. Large crowd in town. We went up town
in eve. Mon & I came home about 12 & Dean came later with Clyde.
Sun. Dec. 30
Not such a nice day. The men took me too church. We stopped & got Arthur
& the men went over too Walter Gossman's while I was at church. Dean
went over too Iona's in P.M. & stayed until in the nite. Arthur &
Ruth went over too see Maxine in eve & they stopped here a few minutes on
their way.
Mon. Dec. 31
Quite a nice day. Not so cold but it got much colder in the nite. I dressed
chickens & baked some & cleaned up the house a little. We went over
too Albert's for turkey supper. Took Arthur & Ruth along & then
Dean went & got Iona too. We had a swell supper & a good time. Shirley
was home. Marion was there too & we bro't him home. Got home about
2:30.
