Thurs. Jan. 1
Regular blizzard all day. Snow drifted pretty deep in some places. Not cold
though. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in A.M. O'Dean L. &
Lawrence Morgan were here awhile in A.M. Got colder in the nite.
Fri. Jan. 2
20º below this A.M. Nice bright day but cold. Warmed up some during the
day. Arlin came along in A.M. & Mon went with him too see if they could
get out with the car but Arlin backed into a ditch & they came back &
got the team & Dean went along. They got the car out & came back with
it. Arlin was here for dinner. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Sat. Jan. 3
8º below this A.M. Nice bright day but cold. Some of the men in the neighborhood
went & shoveled out the road over by Harry's so the cars could get
thro' in A.M. Mon & Dean got Arthur's car started about noon
& they went to B.O. a while. Arthur came home with them Louie K. got home
this noon. We had just had supper when Ruth called & said she had too be
at Davis Corners at 8 A.M. in the morning, so Arthur went right back over there
to help. Howard was over awhile about noon & Dean went over there in eve.
The snow plow went past here in eve. Cold nite.
Sun. Jan. 4
33º below this A.M. Nice bright day, but cold. Didn't warm up much.
Arthur came home about noon. Fritz K. was down awhile in A.M. We had a little
calf this A.M.
Mon. Jan. 5
28º below this A.M. Another bright cold day. Arthur went about 8:30 A.M.
& helped Walt R. haul cream. Dean went over & helped Louie K. a couple
of hrs. in A.M. He sold his hogs. Cold nite.
Tues. Jan. 6
22º below this A.M. Not so cold, but the wind was raw & it seemed much
colder. Quite nice in A.M. snow blew some but it got to be a regular blizzard
in P.M. & much colder. Arthur helped Walt again today, but he got home early.
Mon went to Decorah a little while just after noon with Howard. Mon got the
A.A.A. check cashed $218.06.
Wed. Jan. 7
36º below this A.M. Nice day, but cold. The men hauled in hay & straw.
Johnnie Carolan bro't our hog home about noon & stayed for dinner.
Leonard Wicks left this A.M. for Des Moines too be inducted into the army.
Thurs. Jan. 8
22º below this A.M. It warmed up by the thermometer but the wind was chilly
all day. Mon & the boys went over to Louie's in A.M. & got our
car started & took it to B.O. & got it ready too go. They went to Decorah
in eve too meet with the Selective Service Board. Arlin was here for dinner.
Howard was here in eve until after 9. Warmer in eve. Looked stormy but didn't
storm.
Fri. Jan. 9
25º below this A.M. Nice bright day but cold. The wind blew quite hard
all day. Snow drifted some. Arthur helped Roy H. get his car started in P.M.
& then they went to B.O. Listened to the Joe Louis – "Buddy"
Baer fight in eve. Didn't last long. Joe knocked "Buddy" out
in the first round. Cold nite.
Sat. Jan. 10
30º below this A.M. Warmed up quite a little. Got up to zero. South wind
& it was chilly. We went to Decorah about 11:30. Quite a crowd in town.
I got my hair fixed. Mon & Dean went to B.O. in eve.
Sun. Jan. 11
Zero this morn. Warmed up a lot during the day. Dandy nice day.
Mon. Jan. 12
20º above this A.M. Nice day. Thawed quite a little. Quite a strong wind
from the north. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur went to Mabel in A.M.
Dean helped Ludvig saw wood in P.M. Lloyd K. was here in P.M. & bought our
hogs. Got cooler at nite.
Tues. Jan. 13
8º above this A.M. Dandy nice day. Warmed up & thawed quite a little.
The trucks came & got our hogs about 9:20 A.M. Mon went with one of the
trucks & the boys went to Prosper & got him & then they went on
to Mabel & got the check cashed. Arthur got some teeth fixed. They got home
about 12:30. We went to B.O. in eve to the show. It was good. Large crowd out.
Clara McCabe got the $30.00. We got home about 11. The 55 hogs weighed 9220
lbs. @ $10.75 per cwt. They bro't $991.15. Trucks were $4.50 so that left
us $986.65. The boys got their cards today. Arthur is in 1A & Dean [blank].
Wed. Jan. 14
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. The men did odd jobs. Vera Gates died
about 11:30 tonite.
Thurs. Jan. 15
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M.
Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah in P.M. Mama went along too. Mon & Arthur
got their hair cut. We went up town in eve. Arthur got his card to report to
Des Moines for exams. Howard was here awhile in eve.
Fri. Jan. 16
Dandy nice day. I went to Club at Catherine Hedgvedts in P.M. with Pauline.
Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy lunch. Mon sold a cow at the Sale at Decorah
this P.M. Glen Rollins hauled her. Mon didn't go down town.
Sat. Jan. 17
Not very nice day. Rained quite hard at times in A.M. Didn't rain so much
in P.M. Got some colder but it didn't freeze any. We went over & got
Marion about 12. They took me to B.O. & then the men went to Decorah. I
went to Vera Gates funeral at the M.E. Church at 2:30 P.M. Olive, Shirley E.,
Mrs. Krumm & I sang. (Mrs. K. played too). We sang, "Beautiful Isle
of Somewhere" & "Going Down the Valley". Very large crowd
out. We got home about 4:45. Went up town in eve to a Shower for Maxine &
Arlin at the B.O. Hall. Large crowd. They got lots of nice presents. They furnished
the lunch too. I helped prepare that. We got home about 1:30. Roy Halverson's
Orchestra played. Mon got the returns from the cow he sold yesterday. She weighed
1160 lbs. @ 8.00 per cwt. bro't $89.99 with all expenses pd.
Sun. Jan. 18
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Dean was over
to Howard's awhile in A.M. Arlin came about 4:30 & stayed until about
9.
Mon. Jan. 19
Dandy nice day. Mon & I took Arthur to Decorah about 8:45. They took about
35 or 40 boys to Des Moines for exams for the army. The bus didn't leave
Decorah until 12 so we came home about 11.
Tues. Jan. 20
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean chopped cord wood all day. Mon helped
me with the washing in A.M. & helped did cut wood in P.M. We went up town
in eve to the show. "Penny Serenade". It was good. Not such a large
crowd out. Victor Headington got the $10. We got home about 11. Arthur came
about 1. He hired a taxi too bring him out from Decorah. He passed his exams
OK.
Wed. Jan. 21
Not so nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was a nice day. Mon & Dean
cut cord wood. Arthur went up town in P.M. & again in eve. Dean went over
to Howard's in eve.
Thurs. Jan. 22
Dandy nice day. Dean helped Howard awhile in A.M. & cut cord wood in P.M.
Mon took me to B.O. about 11 A.M. to L.A.S. at the basement. Picnic dinner.
Had a good dinner & a good crowd. Arthur got his letter to report to Des
Moines Jan. 30 today.
Fri. Jan. 23
Nice day. The men did odd jobs. Dave was over in P.M. Arthur went to Calmar
tonite after Ruth. She came for the week end.
Sat. Jan. 24
Mon's 44th Birthday. Rather cloudy in A.M. but cleared off & was a
nice warm day. Arthur went over to Louie's early in A.M. & spent the
day. Ruth came home to supper with him. They went to Decorah to the show in
eve. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah about 10:30. Mon got the car greased.
I got my hair fixed. Mon, Dean & I drove Art's car to B.O. in eve.
Mon & I went to Ben Wicks's to a party in eve celebrating Ben's
& Mon's birthdays. Just Ben's relatives there. We got home about
12:30.
Sun. Jan. 25
Quite a nice day although it was quite foggy at times. Thawed quite a little.
Dean went hunting & tramping & was gone all day. Arthur left here some
after 12. He went & got Ruth & took her back to Cherokee.
Mon. Jan. 26
Not such a nice day. Not cold though. Everything was covered with frost &
was that way all day. Mon & Dean went to B.O. in P.M. Arthur got home about
3:15. Some of Arthur's high school mates came & surprised him in eve.
He was in bed & asleep when they came & he was surely surprised. 20
of them. They played bunco. Ruth Webb won the "big" prize &
Arthur the "booby" prize. They bro't lunch & seemed to
have a good time. We got to bed about 12.
Tues. Jan. 27
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Marion came over in A.M. & was here for
dinner. The men all went to B.O. in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve.
I went to the Show. "Meet the Missus". It was good. We got home
about 10:15. Charles W. came along & went to B.O. & back with us. Arthur
W. came over & spent the eve with Arthur.
Wed. Jan. 28
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. Not cold. Claude's, Lester's,
Mama, Florence, Albert & Aunt Alice came over & spent the day. They
bro't their dinners. We had a good dinner & a good time.
Thurs. Jan. 29
Not very nice in A.M. early. Snowed & acted like a blizzard was on the way
but cleared off & was quite a nice day. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah
about 10:30 A.M. & was down there until about 4 P.M. Arthur went over to
Walt's awhile after we got home. Mon helped Fred W. saw wood early in
A.M. Arthur went over to Howard's in eve.
Fri. Jan. 30
Not very nice day. Dark, damp & cool. We all went to Decorah about 9 A.M.
We stopped at Krumm's a minute on our way down. Arthur had too be down
at the Court House at 10 A.M. We & a Meyer boy had dinner at Borge's
Cafe & then went down to the bus depot. Arthur left for Des Moines to enter
the army. There were 12 in the bunch & he was put in as leader of the bunch.
We left Decorah about 2:30. I stopped off at Maude J's. to Club. Got there
in time for lunch. Had a nice lunch. Quite a few out. I rode up to B.O. with
Florence E. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. The wind started too blow
quite hard in eve & blew hard all nite. Got quite a little colder.
Sat. Jan. 31
Rather cold day & quite windy all day. Tried to snow some. Sun shone some
too. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & we all went to Decorah. Quite
a crowd in town. We got some new kind of feed for the hens. Going to try feeding
them cafeteria style. Stopped to see mama a minute on our way to town &
on the way back.
Sun. Feb. 1
Very nice day. Mon went over to Marion's awhile in A.M. Dean went up to
Ludvigs & went to B.O. with Clyde & then he & Clyde drove Arthur's
car down to Roscoe's. They went on down the river from there too see the
beaver dam. They got back here about 2 & Clyde stayed here until chore time.
Mon & I went over to Bidne's in P.M. too see about my watch. Pearl
& Howard came over about 12:30 in the nite & called Dr. Lannin. Sonny
is sick & Pearl wanted to know what to do.
Mon. Feb. 2
Nice until late in P.M. It clouded up & looked stormy but didn't storm.
I washed in A.M. & made mincemeat in P.M. Mon & Dean hauled in feed
in A.M. & Mon took some oats to Decorah in P.M. & had them ground. Howard
was over awhile about noon.
Tues. Feb. 3
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared up & was nice in P.M. Mon & Dean chopped
wood today. I canned mincemeat this A.M. Had 8 qts. Ironed in P.M. We went to
B.O. in eve. Went to the show. Gene Autry in "The Singing Hill".
It was sure good. Quite a crowd out. Lavonne Emery Funke's name was called
but she wasn't there so next time it will be $30.00. We got home about
11. We got 2 cards from Arthur today.
Wed. Feb. 4
Rather a dark day. Chilly but not too cold. The men chopped wood in A.M. Walt
R. came down in P.M. & was here until after 3. He bought Arthur's
car for $40.00 & took it home with him. The men went up in the woods awhile
after he went home.
Thurs. Feb. 5
Not such a nice day. Rather dark all day. We went up town about 11 A.M. I went
to L.A.S. at the basement. Very large crowd out & a swell dinner. We got
a letter from Arthur today. Pearl was over awhile late in P.M.
Fri. Feb. 6
Not very nice day. Rather damp & chilly. Mon went to B.O. in A.M. &
Dean hauled in feed. Dave was over & spent most of the P.M. I was over to
Pearl's most of P.M. Dean went over there in eve. We had a sick heifer
this morn. Had Dr. Reide.
Sat. Feb. 7
Quite a nice day. Not so chilly. The sun shone all day. We went over & got
Marion about 10 A.M. & went to B.O. stayed up there until nearly 12 &
then went to Decorah. Walt R. & mama went too. Large crowd in town. I got
my hair fixed. We didn't get home until nearly 6. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. I got a card from Arthur & a nice valentine & we got his clothes
back today. Alice Donlan & Ab Hauber were married this A.M.
Sun. Feb. 8
My 50th Birthday. Quite a nice day. Clouded up late in P.M. Mon went over to
Bidne's early in A.M. & got my watch which Mr. Bidne had made into
a wrist watch. It is sure nice. We went down to Claude's & spent the
day. Lester's, Mama & Dell's were there too. Had a good dinner
& a good time.
Mon. Feb. 9
Not very nice day. Snowed most of the day. Not hard though. Enough to cover
the ground good. Didn't do much of anything. Mon went to B.O. in A.M.
Arlin was here for dinner. We got 2 cards from Arthur & 1 from the camp
at Ft. Des Moines. He was sent from there last Fri. to Camp Walters Texas. The
nation moved their clocks ahead 1 hr. today & went on war time.
Tues. Feb. 10
Quite nice most of the day. Everything covered with frost this A.M. & the
sun shining on it was sure pretty. Thawed quite a little. Clouded up late in
P.M. & had a few snow flurries. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. Mama
went along too & then came back here for supper & went to town with
us in eve. We went to the show. "Lady From Louisiana". It was pretty
good. Large crowd. Lyda Wernetts name was called & she wasn't there
so next time it will be $40.00. Mama went home with Dell & Mettie. Shower
at Breezy Hill for Alice & Ab Hauber but we didn't go.
Wed. Feb. 11
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean cleaned
the hen house in A.M. & didn't do much in P.M. Dean went over to Howards
in eve. Snowed a little late in P.M. & eve.
Thurs. Feb. 12
Snowed off & on all day. Sun shone a little too. Not cold. Mon went to B.O.
in A.M. Arthur Smith was here in P.M. getting money for the Red Cross. We got
a letter from Arthur today. He got to his camp about noon last Sunday.
Fri. Feb. 13
Not such a bad day but not too nice. Didn't do too much. Mon went over
to Marion's in A.M.
Sat. Feb. 14
Quite a nice day but it was chilly too. We went to Decorah about 11 A.M. &
didn't get home until after 6. Mon got a hair cut. He & Gust took
Ole A. to Ridgeway in P.M. Ole is taking a vacation. The two Hagamen girls rode
home from Decorah with us. We went to B.O. awhile in eve. Got a letter from
Arthur today.
Sun. Feb. 15
Dark in A.M. started too snow some about noon & kept snowing harder all
the rest of the day. Don't know as I ever saw it snow harder than it did
for awhile in P.M. Otto K. came down in A.M. & installed a florescent light
for the kitchen Mon bought yesterday. Arlin came & stayed until after 12.
We went down to Dell's for dinner. Claude's Lester's &
Mama were there too. Had a grand dinner. We came home early on account of the
snow. Plenty of snow in the road then. Snow stopped some time in the nite.
Mon. Feb. 16
Nice day. Not cold. Snow mighty deep on the level. A few drifts but not many.
Snow started to drift in P.M. Got much colder at nite & the wind blew harder.
Mon & Dean went to B.O. awhile in P.M. They hauled in feed in A.M. Howard
was over & had Mon bore some holes in a sled bolster for him in A.M. We
got a letter & a card from Arthur. Cold nite.
Tues. Feb. 17
20º below this A.M. Cold but nice & bright. Sun shone most of the day.
The snow blew some. Warmed up some during the day. The snow plow went past here
in A.M. Mon & I started for Decorah about 1 P.M. & got up the other
side of John Carolans & the car stopped. Otto K. came along just then &
took us to B.O. & then Mon & Paul R. went back & pulled our car
into town. Roy fixed it (bad coil) & we went on to Decorah. Got home about
5. Went to B.O. in eve to the show Jane Withers & Jackie Cooper in "Her
First Beau". It was good. No one there for the money so it will be $50.00
next time. We got home about 11. Cold nite.
Wed. Feb. 18
20º below this A.M. Cold day. Sun shone a little but it didn't warm
up much. Chilly wind all day & quite strong. Didn't do too much. Worked
at income tax report. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. I got a letter
from Leonard W. today. Cold nite.
Thurs. Feb. 19
20º below this A.M. Nice day. Warmed up quite a bit during the day. Mon
went to B.O. awhile late in P.M. We got 2 letters from Arthur. Howard was over
in eve. Cold nite again.
Fri. Feb. 20
20º below this A.M. Quite cold in A.M. but warmed up & was nice in
P.M. Mon planned on going to Decorah in P.M. but the car wouldn't start
& they had to hitch the team on it to start it so he went to B.O. &
Roy fixed it so it would start. Dean drove the team up after the mail &
on over to Marions. We got a letter from Arthur.
Sat. Feb. 21
Warmer today. Above zero this A.M. Thawed some. We went to Decorah about 11:30.
Mama went along too. I got my hair fixed. We went up town awhile in eve.
Sun. Feb. 22
Dandy nice day. Thawed some. Dave was over awhile in A.M. Dean went over to
Howard's in P.M.
Mon. Feb. 23
Quite a nice day but quite windy & rather a cool wind. I washed & ironed.
Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. The men cleaned out the calf pen in
P.M. John Emery (Clara's John) died this A.M. early.
Tues. Feb. 24
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Mon & I
went to Decorah in A.M. Mon took the income tax figures up to Frank Miller too
have him help out with them. We got home about 1:30. Got a letter from Arthur.
We went to B.O. too the Show in eve. Very large crowd out. East End Kids in
a Fighting play. Bobbie Arnold & Irma Wicks each got $5.00. Next time it
will be $50.00 again. We got home about 11.
Wed. Feb. 25
Very nice in A.M. Clouded up some in P.M. & got quite a little colder. Snowed
off & on in P.M. Mon went to B.O. early in A.M. & got the muffler &
pipe put on the car. He & I went to B.O. in P.M. to John Emery's funeral
at the Lutheran Church. Very large crowd out.
Thurs. Feb. 26
Not such a nice day. Rather chilly. Mon & Dean cut wood in P.M. Dean went
over to Howard's in eve. Dean got a letter from Arthur today.
Fri. Feb. 27
Not so nice in A.M. but cleared up & was very nice in P.M. Mon went over
to Marion's awhile in A.M. The men cut wood in P.M. Alice W. was down
after school & got her order. I got a booklet of Texas pictures from Arthur
today. Geo Snell died today.
Sat. Feb. 28
Dandy nice day. We went over & got Marion in A.M. & went to Decorah.
Large crowd in town. We took Marion over & did his chores on our way home
from town & then he came home to supper with us & went to B.O. with
us in eve. Dean went over to Blaess' with Leonard in eve. (They have moved
over east of Locust.) He didn't get back to B.O. before we came home so
Leonard bro't him home. We got home about 12.
Sun. Mar. 1
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in A.M.
Bill Beckman was here a few minutes in P.M. We went over to Chas Wernett's
in eve to a party. He has moved into Abbie's house. We walked over. Not
many there. Played cards & danced a few times. Got home about 2. Rode home
with Fritz. Bill Beckman & Lenna & Buster Miller & wife were out
from Decorah. Snowed a little while we were over there.
Mon. Mar. 2
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Mon went about 7:45, with the team & Dean
about an hour later with the car, up to help Gust move. He bought the Robinson
place & moved up there today. Johnnie Carolan moved down where Gust moved
off & Ed Knoke moved on Grandma Price's place. Albert & Florence
came after me about 1 & we went to Geo. Snell's funeral at the M.E.
church at B.O. Florence, Olive, Dorothea R. & I sang "When the Roll
is Called Up Yonder", "Old Rugged Cross", & "Going
Down the Valley". The church was full & they had a loud speaker down
cellar so the basement was full too. Mon came up after me about 5.
Tues. Mar 3
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean hauled in feed in A.M. The men cut
cord wood in P.M. I got a letter from Arthur. We went to B.O. in eve to the
show "Lady From Cheyenne". Very large crowd. Good show. Eileen Wicks
got the $50.00. We got home about 11.
Wed. Mar. 4
Dandy nice day. The men cut wood. Philip S. came in P.M. & dehorned the
calves.
Thurs. Mar. 5
Nice day. We went to B.O. about 11:30. I went to L.A.S. at the church. Large
crowd out. Had a good dinner. Grace P., Anita B., Luella Y. & Iona entertained.
We got home a little after 2 & the men cut wood the rest of the P.M. Mon
got a letter from Arthur.
Fri. Mar. 6
Not very nice in A.M. Snowed off & on all A.M. but cleared off & was
nice in P.M. Rather a hard wind all day though. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve.
Sat. Mar. 7
Quite nice early in A.M. but soon clouded up & was cloudy all day. Started
to rain about 5 P.M. & then it turned to snow. Snowed quite hard at times.
Kept it up into the nite. It wasn't cold though. We went to Decorah about
11. Went to B.O. & got Isadore & stopped at Aunt Lissa's &
got mama. Very large crowd in town. I got my hair fixed. Mabel has sold out
so it was a new lady too do the work. Isadore came home to supper with us &
then we took her to B.O. in eve. Not many in town. We came home about 10:45.
Sun. Mar. 8
Not very nice day. Rather dark all day. Got much colder late in P.M. & it
froze up solid tonite. Dean was over to Howard's awhile. Chas. W. was
here a few minutes in P.M.
Mon. Mar. 9
Not so nice early in A.M. but soon cleared up & was a nice day. Plenty windy.
Mon & Dean cut wood in A.M. Mon & I went to school meeting in P.M. Fritz
was put back as director. We had a little calf this morn. Got a letter from
Arthur today.
Tues. Mar. 10
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was nice. Pretty windy.
Rained hard in eve & kept it up into the nite. Turned to snow in the nite
but didn't snow much. The men cut wood. We went to B.O. in eve to the
Show. "Tight Shoes". It was good. Not many out. No one got the money
so it will be $20.00 next time. We got a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. Mar. 11
Not such a nice day. Wind blew hard & was blustery like all day. Got quite
a lot colder in P.M. Sun shone some in P.M. Mon went to Cresco about 10 A.M.
to R.E.A. election of officers. Marion went with him. He got home at 6 P.M.
I went to Lutheran L.A.S. at the church with Kate & Mart. Quite a few out.
They had a swell dinner. Maude J., Bessie J. & Myrtle Newhouse served. We
didn't get home until almost 6. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Thurs. Mar. 12
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men worked at the wood. Mon went
to B.O. a minute just after dinner. We got a letter & a card from Arthur.
Fri. Mar. 13
Not such a bad day & not too good. Rather dark most of the day. Mon took
some oats to Decorah in A.M. & had them ground. He got home about 12:30.
He & Dean cut wood in P.M. I went to Club in P.M. at Pauline's with
Florence. Not so many out but we had a good time & a grand lunch. Got home
about 4. Sonny was here a few minutes at noon. Aunt Eunice, Vin & Eunice
were at Dave's for dinner & he stopped here awhile.
Sat. Mar. 14
Dandy nice day. Dried up a lot. Dean helped Fred W. saw wood all day until about
3 P.M. Mon & I went to Decorah about 10:30. Mon got a hair cut. Large crowd
in town. We came home about 5. Went up town in eve. Ray McCauley was up from
Rock Island & Dean went to Prosper with him so he didn't come home
with us. We got home about 11:30. It rained & snowed in the eve & nite.
Sun. Mar. 15
Rained most of the day & mighty hard for awhile in P.M. Quite a lot of thunder
& lightning in P.M. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in P.M.
Mon. Mar. 16
Sprinkled off & on in A.M. & rained very hard most of P.M. Started to
snow in eve & snowed very hard for awhile. Mon & Dean went to B.O. awhile

Not very nice day. Dark almost all day. Sun shone a little once or twice in
P.M. The men cut wood in A.M. Arthur Smith was here at noon awhile on A.A.A.
The men did odd jobs in P.M. Dean wrote to Arthur. We got a letter from Arthur
& a picture of him. First one since he has been in uniform & it is good.
We went to B.O. in eve. Went to the Show "Arkansas Judge". Elviry
& the Weaver Boys. It was sure good. Not such a large crowd out. No one
got the money. We got home about 11:30. Rained some in the nite.
Wed. Mar. 18
Not so nice in A.M. but not so bad in P.M. The men cut wood. Howard's
came over in eve & then the men folks went up town & Pearl & the
kiddies stayed here. Arlin & Maxine came just a little while before the
men got home & they all stayed then until about 11:30. Froze quite hard
tonite. Beautiful nite.
Thurs. Mar. 19
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot & dried up a lot. They went by here with the
maintainer in A.M. & sure stirred up the road. It was good until they came
along. Mon & Dean cleaned out the calf pen & hauled in feed early in
A.M. while it was froze up. Mon took me to L.A.S. at B.O. at the basement. Violet,
Elsie S. & Lottie Manuel entertained. Quite a few out & a swell dinner.
We got home about 4. Dean cut wood in P.M. It rained in the nite.
Fri. Mar. 20
Nasty rainy day. Didn't do too much. Mon drove up after the mail in P.M.
but the mail man didn't come.
Sat. Mar. 21
Dandy nice day. We went to Decorah about 11. I got my hair fixed. Lester &
Loyal rode home from D. with us. We took them to B.O. Dean went to Decorah in
eve with Art W. The roads dried up a lot. Little son born to Marie & Martin
Jaarstad.
Sun. Mar. 22
Dandy nice day. Windy. Claude, Olive & Marvin came over & spent the
day. We had a good visit. The wind dried up things today.
Mon. Mar. 23
Dandy nice day. Not quite so windy. I washed in A.M. Mon & I went to Canton
in P.M. & Dean went to B.O. & got his hair cut. Dr. K. was here in A.M.
& tested the cows for T.B. We got a letter from Arthur.
Tues. Mar. 24
Dandy nice warm day. Terribly windy day. Dried up a lot. Mon & Dean cut
wood awhile in A.M. Marion came over about noon & stayed until after 4.
Mon took him home then. Dean cleaned the hen house in P.M. Mon took Dean &
I & Ruth & Walter to B.O. in eve & he & Fritz went to a directors
meeting at the school house. We went to the Show. It was so funny. Abbott &
Costello "In the Navy". Large crowd. Chas. Schnitzler got the $30.00.
A band came down from Canton & played awhile in the Hall before the show.
We had to wait for the men after the show. Got home about 12. Marion rode home
from town with us. I ironed in P.M.
Wed. Mar. 25
Nice day but mighty windy. I made cookies & candy & sent to Arthur for
his birthday. Dean made some candy in A.M. too. He walked over west in P.M.
& carried the mail for Clarence O. The roads are too bad yet for him too
get thro'. Mon took Arthur's box to B.O. about 4 P.M. & mailed
it. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. It started to rain in the nite.
Thurs. Mar. 26
Rained most of the A.M. Sometimes real hard. Didn't rain in P.M. but it
got colder late in P.M. Wind blew hard. Dean rode Barney carrying the mail this
P.M. Mon cut wood awhile in P.M. We got a letter from Arthur. Dr. K. came &
read the cattle this A.M. & there was no reaction. Howard was over in eve.
Froze hard tonite.
Fri. Mar. 27
Not such a nice day & not so bad. Somewhat cooler. Sun shone some &
it snowed a little off & on during the day. The men cut wood in P.M. Dean
went with the mail man & then carried mail over west in P.M. I went to Club
at Lenora Leistikow's in P.M. with Gladys. Mon was in B.O. when we got
back there so I rode home with him.
Sat. Mar. 28
Not too bad a day. But rather cloudy most of the day. Started to snow late in
P.M. & snowed off & on. Snowed real hard in the nite. Mon & I went
over & got Marion about 10:30 A.M. & went to Decorah. Large crowd in
town. Loyal came home with us to supper & then we took him to B.O. in eve.

Sun. Mar. 29
Quite nice for awhile early in A.M. but clouded up & snowed off & on
all day & eve. Melted a lot of the snow though. Pretty sloppy in P.M. We
went over & got Dave & Lizzie about 11:30 & went over & spent
the day with Maxine & Arlin. Had a good time. Lizzie, Maxine & I put
up the shades & curtains in the kitchen in P.M. Mrs. B. & Vernie were
there awhile in P.M. too. Got home about 5:30. We went up to Gust's in
eve. Fritz's rode up with us. Ludvig's & Marion were there too.
The men played cards & drank beer. Had a dandy lunch. Got home about 2.

Not very nice day. Dark all day. Snowed in A.M. Thawed a lot too. Mon went to
Rochester with Clarence O. in P.M. Dean carried the mail.
Tues. Mar. 31
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean cut wood in A.M. Dean
carried mail in P.M. & Mon went down in the woods where Dell & Glen
were piling wood. We went to B.O. in eve. Went to the Show. Judy Canova in "Sis
Hopkins". It was good. Quite a crowd. No one got the money. We got home
about 11:30.
Wed. Apr. 1
Dandy nice day. Mon & I went to Decorah in A.M. Took some oats down &
had them ground. Got home about 12. Dean carried mail in P.M.
Thurs. Apr. 2
Quite a nice day. Dried up a lot. Mon & Dean hitched up Duke this A.M. for
the first time. He did a little prancing around but not too bad. They drove
him around in this field north of the house awhile & then drove him over
to the corner west & back again. Mon took me to L.A.S. at the church at
noon. Quite a crowd out. Inez W., Floy R., Myrtle Snell entertained. We got
home about 2 & then Mon & I hitched up the colt & Mon drove him
around the field & then over to Fred's & back. Dean carried mail
in P.M. We got 2 letters from Arthur today. Pearl was over awhile in A.M.
Fri. Apr. 3
Dandy nice day. Mon helped Dell Mc. saw wood down in Marion's woods. Dean
did odd jobs. He didn't have to carry mail today. Roads are pretty good
now. After Mon got home they hitched up the colt & drove him awhile. When
they got back Mon went over & got Ruth (she is home for Easter) & she
came over & stayed for supper. We took her home about 9:30.

Dandy nice day. Mighty warm & windy. We went to Decorah about 10:30. I got
my hair fixed. Very large crowd in town. Got home about 5:30. Dean went to Decorah
in eve with Leonard B. Mon & I went to B.O. awhile.
Sun. Apr. 5
Not very nice day. Tried to snow early in A.M. then brightened up awhile. Clouded
up in P.M. & rained off & on. Had some thunder & lightning. Much
cooler. Dean went over to Chas. W's. Mon & I were alone all day.
Mon. Apr. 6
Not very nice day. Rainy & cool. Didn't do too much. Dean went over
to "Happy's", Marion's & Wilhelm's in P.M.
with mail. They hauled two loads of hay from Louie's. One in A.M. &
the other rather late in P.M. We got a letter from Arthur. Got a couple more
pictures from him.
Tues. Apr. 7
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice the rest of the day,
only rather cool & windy. Dean hauled in hay & hauled out manure in
A.M. Mon & I went up to mama's about noon & she came home with
us. We did odd jobs in P.M. The men hitched up the colt & then went down
& dragged corn stalks with him in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. Went to the
Show. "Time Out For Rythym". It was pretty good. Quite a crowd out.
No one got the money. Ole rode home from town with us. Got home about 11.
Wed. Apr. 8
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Luella Y. came over & washed the
wood work in the kitchen. She started about 9 & got thro' about 3.
The men drove the colt today. Dragging corn stalks. Mon took Luella home about
4:30.
Thurs. Apr. 9
Quite a nice day but windy. Dean dragged corn stalks in A.M. & they raked
& burned them in P.M. Walt R. stopped to visit a while when he came after
the cream & Arlin came & visited awhile so I didn't get much done
in A.M. Mon went up at noon & got Isadore. She helped me in P.M. Howard
came rushing over in P.M. & said "Sonny" was mighty bad so I
left every thing to Isadore & went over there awhile. He had a convulsion.
Dr. Lannin was over & Sonny got better after that. We took Isa home in eve.
Got a letter from Arthur.
Fri. Apr. 10
Mighty windy day & cold. Mon went up & got Isa in A.M. & she helped
me all day. I had Club in P.M. Only 12 out. Mon took Isa home about 5. Mon &
Dean raked & burned corn stalks all day. I went over to Howards late in
P.M. awhile. We went over to Chas. W's. in eve to a party for Bill Beckman.
Had a dandy good time. Not so many out. Played cards & danced. Ludvig played.
Got home about 2:45. Mighty cold & windy nite. Froze hard tonite. Got a
letter from "Wimpie" today. He is at Pasco Wash. now. Had another
little calf this A.M.

Nice day. Pretty cool in A.M. but warmed up quite a bit in P.M. We went up &
got mama about 11 A.M. & went to Decorah. Large crowd in town. Got home
about 6. Didn't go up town in eve. Got a nice photo of Arthur today.
Sun. Apr. 12
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. We went up to Isa's & spent the day.
Loyal's 15th birthday. Mama, Claude & Olive were there too. Marion
& Marvin went fishing. Tommie McCabe's & Rosemary Mc. came there
after dinner hunting Mon. Rosemary wanted to make out her contract for teaching
our school. So Mon & Tommie came down here & got the papers & then
came back up to Isa's & fixed them out. We got home about 5:15. Dean
went over to Howard's in eve.

Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean dragged in A.M. & disced in
P.M. Mon did odd jobs. Mon & I went up town a few minutes in eve. I went
up to the church to practice. I got a letter from Arthur. Got another picture
of him. It was good.
Tues. Apr. 14
Dandy nice day only windy. Mon & Dean disced. Duke got sick in P.M. so they
had to quit. Arlin hauled lime here today. We went up town in eve. Went to the
Show "Arizona". It was pretty good. Large crowd out. Ruth, Fritz
& Walter went with us. Got home about 11. Mon spaded up my garden spot today
& I made some garden. Got a letter from Arthur.
Wed. Apr. 15
Nice warm day but terribly windy. I finished my garden in A.M. Mon & Dean
disced & helped Arlin spread lime. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve. I went
to practice. Got home about 10:30. Roy H. bought two heifers here & he &
Chas. W. came over after them in eve. Dean helped drive them over there.
Thurs. Apr. 16
Nice part of the time & rained too off & on all day. Got colder late
in P.M. Dean disced. They went over to Fred's just after dinner &
got seed oats. Weren't gone long. Arlin hauled the last of the lime in
P.M. I got a letter from Arthur. Our mail route was changed today so it goes
by here now. Seems mighty good too just go out to the road for the mail.
Fri. Apr. 17
Nice day. Dean disced all day. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve. The W.S.C.S.
had a program in the Hall & I sang. Arthur S., Dave Thompson, Dorothea R.
sang with me. We sang "Polly Wollie Doodle" & "The Peanut
Man". It was an "Old Family Album" & Radio Program. All
wore old fashioned clothes. It was good. Marion rode home with us. Got home
about 11. Cool nite. Mon bought corn of Tommie McCabe & Glen Rollins hauled
it this A.M. Mon met him in B.O. & went with him. Got 132 bu. @ .80 per
bu. $105.50.
Sat. Apr. 18
Dandy nice day. Dean disced in A.M. Mon went over & got Marion about 11
A.M. & he was here for dinner & went to Decorah with us in P.M. Large
crowd in town. I got my hair fixed. Mon, Dean & I got every day shoes. Mon
got a hair cut too. Marion came home to supper with us & then went to B.O.
with us in eve. Dean went to Decorah with Leonard B. Marion, Walt Mc. (he went
home with Marion for the nite) & Mike B. rode home with us. Mike went to
Howard. We got home some after 12. Cold nite.
Sun. Apr. 19
Mama's Birthday. 71 years. Dandy nice day. We went up to mama's
& spent the day. Lester & Isadore were there too. Dean went fishing
in P.M. He got 16.
Mon. Apr. 20
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean finished discing in A.M. & started
seeding. Mon & I went over to Fred's a few minutes in P.M. Mon mowed
the lawn when we got back & I raked & cleaned up some places where the
mole worked. Isa & Lester were down & spent the eve. Chas. W. came over
& got Dean in eve & they went over to Chas. & dug out some foxes.
Got 3 little ones.
Tues. Apr. 21
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Dean seeded until about 4:30 he broke the tongue.
Mon went to B.O. in P.M. & got the car greased. Arlin was here for dinner.
We went to B.O. in eve. Fritz, Ruth & Walter went along. Went to the Show.
Something about a feud. It was good. Very large crowd. One of Bill Kimber's
girls name was called so she got $5. Next time it will be $45. We got home about
10:30. I got a letter from Arthur today. Mon drew a case of beer tonite.

Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Dean finished seeding in A.M. & dragged in
P.M. Mon & I went to Decorah awhile in P.M. Got some grass seed. Dean went
over to Howard's in eve. I got a letter from Arthur today. We had another
little calf this A.M.

Dandy nice day. Dean dragged in A.M. & then Mon dragged in P.M. & Dean
sowed grass seed. Mon & I went out in A.M. & got the cow & new calf.
Alice Wilbur was here in P.M. after her order. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve.
Fri. Apr. 24
Dean's 22nd Birthday. Dandy nice day. Quite windy. They finished seeding
& went to discing. I went to Club at Iona's in P.M. with Pauline.
Quite a few out. Had a dandy lunch. Isa, Lester & Loyal were down for supper.
We went over to Chas. in eve to a party. Had a good time. Got home about 2:45.
Aunt Maude Emery's house burned late this P.M. Dean got a Birthday booklet
from Arthur.

Very nice in A.M. clouded up in P.M. Rained late in P.M. & again in the
nite. Quite a bit of thunder & lightning in the nite. Mon & Dean went
over & got Marion about 11 & he was here for dinner. They went over
to Chas. for Marions rubber & Chas. came back with them & went to Decorah
with us. Large crowd in town. Chas. bought a car so Dean rode home with him.
We got home about 6. Dean went to B.O. with Chas. in eve. I got a letter from
Arthur today. Dean got a wash suit today.
Sun. Apr. 26
Not so nice in A.M. Sprinkled off & on. Sun shone some in P.M. & sprinkled
off & on too. Albert, Florence & Norris came over for dinner. Shirley
was sick so she couldn't come. The men went over & got Marion just
as dinner was ready. We all went down on Silver Creek in P.M. The men fished
& Florence & I picked flowers. Mon & Dean got 32. Norris & Marion
got quite a few. We had lunch after we got back. They went home some after 6.

Nice early in A.M. but clouded up & it sure did rain hard in A.M. &
kept it up off & on all A.M. & into the P.M. Cleared up late in P.M.
& was quite nice but terribly windy. I washed & got some of the clothes
out before the rain. Mon & Dean started dragging & sowing grass seed
over again. They got to the house just before it rained so hard. We went to
B.O. in P.M. Mon had to register for the draft. I went up to Mama's. Dean
got a hair cut. We came home a little after 5. I put the rest of the clothes
out & got them dry.
Tues. Apr. 28
Dandy nice day only a little windy. The men finished dragging & sowing grass
seed in A.M. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. too get some oats ground. Mon
got a new wash suit. We went to B.O. in eve to the Show. Fritz's went
along. Had 2 shows & we went to the last one. "Bachelor Daddy"
with Baby Sandy. It was sure good large crowd out. Donald Emery got $5 so next
week it will be $50.00. We got home about 11:45. Roger Krumm rode home from
town with us. He has been home on a furloug, but goes back tomorrow. Mon drew
another case of beer tonite. Had another little calf today. Rained some in the
nite. Dean disced in A.M.
Wed. Apr. 29
Sprinkled early in A.M. then brightened up some. Looked rainy off & on all
day but the sun shone quite a bit too. The men cleaned the calf pen in A.M.
They hauled the rest of the hay into the barn in P.M. & then Dean disced
the rest of the P.M. Mon mowed the lawn & I raked most of it. Lester &
Loyal were down in A.M. I got a bunch of papers & pasteboard boxes. Looked
pretty rainy in eve but didn't rain.
Thurs. Apr. 30
Pretty warm day. Mon disced in A.M. Dean did odd jobs. I went to L.A.S. with
Gladys just for dinner. Quite a few out for such a busy time. We had a grand
dinner. Zoa, Myra, Ada & Edie R. served. We got back home a little after
1. I made candy for Arthur in P.M. Dean disced in P.M. & Mon put on screens.
Mon & I went over to Fred's a little while in eve & Dean went
to Howard's. I got a letter from Arthur. Rained some in the nite.
Fri. May 1
Not such a nice day. Wind blew terribly hard all day. Looked pretty rainy sometimes
too. Sun shone part of the time. Got much cooler in P.M. & eve. Dean finished
discing in A.M. & then Mon started plowing. Dean fixed fence & did other
things in P.M. Chas. came over in eve & Dean went up to Fritz's with
him. Verna, Darlene & Grace were here in eve hanging May baskets. We had
6 little pigs today.
Sat. May 2
Rather dark. Sun shone part of the time but it was cool too. Mon plowed in A.M.
Dean did odd jobs & then he went over & got Marion & he was here
for dinner & went to Decorah with us in P.M. Large crowd in town. Mama was
down town & got a permanent. She went down with Lester's & came
home with us to supper. Artie Mc. rode home with us too. He came up to Dave's.
We went up town in eve. It started to rain while we were going up town &
kept it up all nite. Some times quite hard. We got home about 11:30. Dean went
to Decorah in eve with Chas. & it rained so hard Chas. stopped here &
stayed all nite.

Not very nice day. Plenty cold. Dean went with Chas. over to his folks &
spent the day.
Mon. May 4
Cloudy all A.M. but the sun came out in P.M. Cold day but warmed up some in
P.M. I went up to the school house about 8:30 A.M. & helped Alice with the
"Sugar Rationing". Got home about 4. Mon & Dean hauled manure
in A.M. & Mon plowed in P.M. & Dean fixed fence. Harrys kids were here
in eve May basket hanging & then Dean went with them. I got a letter from
Arthur & "Wimpie".
Tues. May 5
Not very nice day. Dark & cold. Sprinkled quite hard in A.M. Rained hard
in eve awhile & then again in the nite. Wind blew hard in the nite. The
men hauled manure & did odd jobs. We went to B.O. in eve. Fritz & Walter
went along. Went to the last show. Large crowd out. Abbot & Costello in
"Hold That Ghost". Long show. Mr. Beardsmore got $10. Next time
it will be $50. We got home about 12:45. Had a bunch of little pigs today.

Rained quite hard in A.M. but quit in P.M. but was cloudy, damp & cold.
Didn't do too much. Verna & LaVern were here in eve awhile. Had 8
little pigs tonite. Mon got a letter from Arthur today.
Thurs. May 7
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. Mon & I went to Decorah about 10 A.M. I got
a permanent. Got home about 3:30. Mon went to B.O. in eve with Roy H. Got a
card from Ruth K. today.
Fri. May 8
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon plowed. Dean washed & cleaned
up the car. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. I got a letter from Arthur.
Sat. May 9
Nice day. Mon plowed most of the day disced some in P.M. Dean did odd jobs.
I went to B.O. in P.M. with Pauline & Nora. The Club entertained the "Mothers"
of the community. Had quite a crowd out. Had a nice program & lunch. I had
a reading for the program. Got home about 5. We went up town in eve. Dean went
to Decorah with Chas. W. We got home about 12. Had some more little pigs today.
Sun. May 10
Nice day. We went up to mama's. Claude, Olive, Marvin, Lester & Isa
were there too. Mon & Claude went down to the Hall in P.M. & practiced.
It rained in the nite. Had some more little pigs today. Henry Lovlien passed
away tonite.
Mon. May 11
Rained most of A.M. & sometimes quite hard. Cleared off quite a little late
in P.M. Didn't do much of anything. Dean went over to Chas. in eve. Mon,
Marion, Fritz, Roy & Ed A. went to Cresco in eve to Lodge. B.O. put on the
1st Degree over there. I got a Sofa Pillow cover from Arthur today for Mother's
Day. Had some more little pigs today.
Tues. May 12
Rather cloudy part of the day. The sun shone some too. Dean mowed the lawn in
A.M. & Mon raked part of it. Jim Headington was down about noon & borrowed
the boar. We went up town in eve. Fritz, Ruth & Walter went along. Went
to the second show. Very large crowd "Unfinished Business". It was
good. Ethel Sexton got $10. So next week it will be $50 again. We got home about
12:15. Les Abbott died today.
Wed. May 13
Not such a nice day. Rather cloudy in A.M. Rained terribly hard in P.M. &
hailed. Quite a bit of thunder & lightning. We went up town after dinner.
Went to Henry Lovlien's funeral at the Lutheran church. Very large crowd.
The rain came just as the service was over. I got down town before it rained
so hard. Most of the people waited at the church until after the rain &
then the mourners went to the cemetry. Ludvig rode home from town with us. It
cleared up after the rain & was real nice & warm. We went up around
the woods looking at the little pigs after we got home. I got a letter from
Arthur today.
Thurs. May 14
Cold windy day. We went up town about 11:30. Caught up with Marion & he
rode up town with us. I went to M.E.L.A.S. at the basement. Mon & Marion
came up for dinner to. Picnic lunch. Nice dinner. Not so many out though. Went
to Les Abbott's funeral at the Advent Church in P.M. Quite a crowd out.
Quite a few Odd Fellow's out. Dorothea Reid & I sang "In the
Garden" & Velda K. sang a song. Dean went over to Howard's in
eve.
Fri. May 15
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was quite nice only
cool. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean cleaned the hen house in A.M. &
the brooder house after dinner & then Dean took the spreader up to Gust's.
Gust & Kate were here awhile about noon. Rev. Goodrick was here in P.M.
Sat. May 16
Quite a nice day. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & we went to Decorah
about 11 A.M. Not many in town. Mon got a hair cut. Marion came home to supper
with us & then we went up town in eve. Got home about 11. Dean got a letter
from Arthur today. Had 11 more little pigs today from 1 sow.
Sun. May 17
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. Quite
a bit of thunder & lightning to. Mon traded Marion a sow for pasture this
summer & Fritz hauled her over there with his trailer early in A.M. Dean
went fishing. Mon & I took Dave, Lizzie & Bernice over to Maxine's
school house to her last day of school picnic. Quite a few there & we sure
had a swell dinner. Got home about 4.
Mon. May 18
Rather cloudy at times & the sun shone quite a bit too. Mon & I took
oats to Decorah in P.M. & had them ground. I got a letter from Arthur &
one from "Wimpie".
Tues. May 19
Quite a nice day but cool. I washed & ironed. Mon went over to Marion's
in A.M. & Marion came home with him. They did some work here in A.M. &
then took some of our young stock over to Marion's in P.M. to stay there
for the summer. We went to B.O. in eve. Went to the Show. Gene Autry in "Sunset
In Wyoming". It was good. Very large crowd at both shows. The number called
for $50 was not there so they drew numbers until Myrtle Harvey got $10. We got
home about 12:30. Mon got the beer again tonite.
Wed. May 20
Quite a nice day but cool. Dean disced all day until late in P.M. he started
dragging. Mon did odd jobs.
Thurs. May 21
Quite a nice day. Dean dragged in A.M. Mon went to B.O. in A.M. Mon started
planting corn in P.M. He planted the small piece down north.
Fri. May 22
Quite a nice day. Dean disced in A.M. & Mon disced in P.M. Dean & I
went up to the school house for dinner. Last day of school & Alice had a
picnic. Had a dandy good dinner & quite a few out. I went to Club at Velda

Dandy nice day. Mon & Dean took turns discing in A.M. & Dean disced
in P.M. Dean went over & got Marion in A.M. & he had dinner here &
went to Decorah with us. Mama & Isa went to. Mama & I got our hair fixed.
Quite a crowd in town. We got home about 6. Went to B.O. in eve. Mon & I
got home about 12 & Dean came later with Johnnie Carolan. We got a Camp
paper from Arthur today. Charlie McIntire was killed at Decorah tonite.
Sun. May 24
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon sold a sow to Marion & Fritz came &
hauled her over there about 11:30. Mon & Dean went & Dean went from
there fishing. Mon got back here about 3 & then he & I went down on
Silver Creek fishing. Got quite a few (25). Dean didn't get any.
Mon. May 25
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Dean finished discing in A.M. & dragged in P.M.
Mon went over to Louie's in A.M. & mowed the yard in P.M. & did
odd jobs. Rained hard in the nite. I got a letter from Arthur. Little daughter
born to Charlotte & Howard McCabe this P.M.
Tues. May 26
Cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off later & was quite a nice day. Warmer.
Dean went over to Howard's in A.M. & Mon went over to Dave's.
Mon took Lizzie, mama & I to Charlie McIntire's funeral at the Olson
- Iverson home in P.M. Dean went to B.O. Large crowd at the funeral & beautiful
flowers. We came back to the cemetry at B.O. for the burial. Visited with quite
a few relatives. Loyal came home from B.O. with us. We went to B.O. to the Show
in eve. Very large crowd out to both shows. "Blondie In Society".
It was good. Mrs. Walter Bender got $10. We got home about 12.
Wed. May 27
Not such a nice day. Sun shone some. Wind blew pretty hard in P.M. & it
got quite a little cooler. I washed & ironed. The men did odd jobs in A.M.
Dean dragged in P.M. He got done about 5 & then Mon went out & planted
corn until about 6:30. Had quite a storm in the nite. Hard thunder & lightning
& it rained hard too.
Thurs. May 28
Quite a nice day. Warmest we have had for some time. Mon went to B.O. in A.M.
awhile. He went out after dinner to plant corn but it was too wet, so we went
to Decorah. Mighty warm down there. Dean got a hair cut. We got home about 6.
Fri. May 29
Terribly hot in A.M. but clouded up at noon & looked quite rainy. Wind changed
to the north & it was much cooler in P.M. Didn't rain tho'.
Dean dragged & Mon planted corn. Mon & I went over to Marion's
a little while in eve & Dean went over to Howard's. I got a card from
Arthur today. He is on the way to his new camp. Had a hard wind storm in the
nite. Quite a lot of thunder & lightning but it only sprinkled a little.
Sat. May 30
Nice early in A.M. but clouded up later. Bad looking storm about 10 A.M. Very
sharp lightning & thunder & a short hard shower, some hail. Cleared
off about noon & was nice in P.M. But very warm. Mon & Dean dragged
& planted until the storm in A.M. & then went out again in P.M. We went
up town in eve. Rained hard about 10 & for about an hour. Plenty of thunder
& lightning too. We came home about 11:30. Dean came home later. Rained
hard & then wind blew hard later in the nite.
Sun. May 31
Rained hard early in A.M. & then off & on all day until rather late
in P.M. it let up for awhile & the sun shone. Quite a lot of thunder &
lightning. Quite warm too. Mon & Dean went over to Howard's in A.M.
& Dean went down on the creek in P.M. Rained in the nite a hard shower.
Mon. June 1
Not very nice day. Rained in A.M. & was cloudy & dark in P.M. Sprinkled
some. We went up town in P.M. I went up to mama's. Stopped to vote on
our way home. (Primary Election). Got a letter from Arthur today. He is in San
Luis Obispo California. Rained in the nite.
Tues. June 2
Not so nice in A.M. but was nice in P.M. Quite warm. Mon & I went up at
noon & got mama & went to Decorah. Mama & I both went up too see
Dr. Dalquist. Quite a few in town. Drove up around by Luther College on our
way home & then stopped too see Mrs. Miller & Mrs. Thompson a little
while. Got home about 6. Went to B.O. in eve to the Show. Fritz & Walter
went along. They had the Show in the tent tonite. Large crowd out. Just one
Show. Evelyn Falck got the $50. We got home about 11:30. Had a hard rain in
the nite.
Wed. June 3
Quite nice until about 3 P.M. It clouded up & we had a hard rain & hard
wind. Cleared off again & was nice in late P.M. & eve. I washed &
ironed. Mon took Gladys & I to Decorah to a Canning Sugar Rationing meeting
at the Community Building. Very large crowd out. We got home about 12. Rained
hard later in the nite. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Thurs. June 4
Rained early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice the rest of the day but
mighty warm. Mon went over to Whalen's, Harry's, Martin's
& Gilbert's in A.M. Howard was here awhile in P.M. Gladys & I
had our meeting at the school house in P.M. about the sugar for canning.
Fri. June 5
Mighty warm day. The men worked in the field in P.M. I went to at Club Ella
Reed's in P.M. with Pauline. Not so many out. Had a swell lunch. Had another
hard rain in the nite.
Sat. June 6
Quite a nice day. Cooler. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & he was
here for dinner & went to Decorah in P.M. with us. I got my hair fixed.
Ole rode home with us to. We took him & Marion home. We went up town in
eve. Marion rode up with us. I went up to mama's awhile. Mon & I came
home about 12:30. Clyde & Allen rode home with us. Dean & Marion went
down to Johnnie Carolan's & had lunch after we came home. I got a
letter from Ruth today. Also some pictures Arthur had sent her.
Sun. June 7
Not very nice day. Dark & rather misty at times. Dean went over to Howard's
in A.M. & then down to the river in P.M. with Harold Bronner, Marion W.
& Paul Joseph Carolan. It brightened up late in P.M. & was nice in eve.
Mon. June 8
Dandy nice day. I washed. Dean dragged & Mon planted corn in A.M. finished
planting corn. Dean disced in P.M. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. Took
oats down & had them ground. I went up too see Dr. D. I got a letter from
Arthur.
Tues. June 9
Nice day. Dean disced until about 3 P.M. & then he dragged & Mon planted
beans. Mon mowed the lawn in A.M. I ironed in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. Walter
went along & we caught up to Clyde, Allen & Howard & they rode up
& back with us. Gene Autry show. It was good. Quite a crowd out. No one
got the money. We got home about 11:30. It rained a little in the nite.
Wed. June 10
Not such a bad day. Warm. Dean dragged in A.M. & Mon finished planting beans.
They started plowing corn in P.M. It looked like a very bad storm about 6 P.M.
but it just rained a little here. Rained harder again in the nite. Isa, Lester,
Loyal & Frances Gjetly were here & spent the eve. Mon gave Isa a couple
of little pigs.
Thurs. June 11
Rained hard early in A.M. & then off & on most of A.M. Mon & Dean
did odd jobs in P.M. Very nice in P.M. & plenty warm. Had a storm again
in the nite. Warren & Inez Harvey & children were here a few minutes
in eve. He was after repairs for a hay loader. We had another little calf today.
L.A.S. today for supper but I didn't get there.
Fri. June 12
Not very nice day. Dark & damp. Chas. & Helen came just as we were going
to have dinner so they had dinner with us & stayed until about 3. Mon went
over to Marion's late in P.M. awhile. I got a letter from Arthur today.
Got much colder late in P.M. & eve.
Sat. June 13
Nice day but cold. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & we went to Decorah
about 11 A.M. Not so many in town. Mon got a hair cut. We got home about 6:30.
Went to B.O. in eve. Dean went to Decorah with Leonard B. Ruth K. got home today.
I talked to her on the telephone tonite.
Sun. June 14
Quite a nice day but cool. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in A.M. &
then went down to the creek fishing in P.M. but the creek was so muddy he didn't
stay long. Uncle Albert & Aunt Eunice are here for their vacation &
they went over to Dave's too spend the day so they bro't mama down
here too visit. We all went over to Emmons Kern's in A.M. too look at
a corn plow. Maxine went with us from her place too show us the way. Arlin was
not at home. Uncle Albert's stopped a minute when they came after mama.
Florence, Albert, Shirley, Norris, Phyliss & Marcella were here in eve.
Mon. June 15
Quite a nice day but cool. I washed. The men plowed corn in A.M. Mon & I
went to B.O. right after dinner. Had some papers too sign before a notary so
we stopped at Otto K's. The oil papers on the land in North Dakota. I
went up to mama's & picked what few strawberries there were. Uncle
Albert's & Aunt Lissa were up there. Mon went over to Mabel for some
repairs for the corn plow. Uncle Albert went with him. Mon dragged the beans
when he got home. I got a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. June 16
Quite a nice day but cool. Dean plowed corn all day. Mon dragged the beans again
in A.M. & fixed up the 2 row corn plow & plowed corn in P.M. We went
to B.O. in eve to the Show. Fred Astaire & Rita Hayworth in "You'll
Never Be Rich". It was sure good. No one got the money. A drunk man from
Decorah run into & smashed up Harold Bentley's car & damaged Tommy
McCabe's car some just before the show was out. Quite a lot of excitement
in town. We didn't get home until after 12. Ole rode home with us. Cassie
Emery is here visiting & I saw her at the Show.
Wed. June 17
Not very nice day. Damp & cool. Quite misty in P.M. The men plowed corn
all day. Ruth & Mrs. K. were here a few minutes just after dinner. I got
a letter from Arthur today & Mon got a tie set from him for a Father's
Day present.
Thurs. June 18
Rather damp & foggy in A.M. early but cleared off later. Was quite warm.
The men plowed corn. I went over to Pearl's late in P.M. a little while.
I picked the cherries in P.M. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Fri. June 19
Nice day. The men plowed corn. Mon took me to B.O. at noon & I went to Club
at Dorothea R's in P.M. Not many out. We had a dandy lunch. I went down
to mamas after Club & waited until Mon came in from the field & he came
up after me.
Sat. June 20
Nice day. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & we went to Decorah about
11. I got my hair fixed. Mon got a hair cut. Loyal rode home with us & we
took him to B.O. We went up town in eve. The Club entertained the Fathers of
the Community at the Lutheran church. Had a nice program & lunch. Got home
about 11:30. Dean went to Decorah with Leonard B.
Sun. June 21
Nice day. We went over to Marions & spent the day. Albert's were there
too. Ruth K. came with them from church. Had a good dinner & lots of strawberries.
Dean, Ruth, Shirley & Norris went fishing in P.M.
Mon. June 22
Nice day but quite windy. I washed & ironed. The men did odd jobs. We got
2 letters from Arthur today. Got much cooler tonite. Dean went to Breezy Hill
in eve to a Veteran's Stag party with Fritz.
Tues. June 23
Nice bright day but terribly windy cold & the dust was terrible. Dean mowed
the lawn & Mon mowed thistles. I scrubbed the brooder house in P.M. &
then Mon & I went to Mabel about 4 P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. Walter went
along. Went to the Show. It was so cold they had it in the Hall. Big crowd.
No one got the money. Good Show. Judy Canova in "Puddin Head". We
got home about 12.
Wed. June 24
Nice day. A little warmer. The men plowed corn. Ruth came before we had breakfast.
She made cookies & I made candy & we fixed up a box for Arthur. She
went home after dinner & Mon & I took the box up to B.O. & mailed
it. I went up to mamas & picked the berries. Got quite a few. Mon plowed
corn after he got home. Dean plowed beans in P.M. Chas. W. Arthur W. & Earl
Wernet came over in eve & Dean went fishing with them. I got a letter from
Arthur today. It rained hard in the nite.
Thurs. June 25
Not very nice day. Dark & damp. Mon went up to Fritz & over to Louie's
in A.M. with some school papers too be signed. He & I took some oats to
Decorah in P.M. & had them ground. Lennie Whalen & Donald McCabe rode
to B.O. with us & Marion rode home from B.O. with us. Dean mowed thistles
& weeds most of the day. L.A.S. today but we got back to B.O. too late to
go.
Fri. June 26
Not very nice day. Dark & damp. Rather misty at times. The men did odd jobs.
Dean mowed the lawn in P.M. Fritz was here in P.M. Stayed until about 7:30.

Nice day. Pretty warm. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & we went
to Decorah. Dean got a hair cut. Not such a big crowd in town. We got home about
5. Went up town in eve. Marion rode up & back with us. Got home about 12.

Rained quite hard early in A.M. brightened up later but thundered most of the
time. Clouded up again about noon & rained very hard off & on all P.M.
Looked like a very bad storm in eve & it did rain terribly hard & the
wind blew hard. Bad thunder & lightning all P.M. & eve. Water everywhere.
River & creeks up. Mon took me to church in A.M. Dean went over to Howard's
& then down on the creek awhile.
Mon. June 29
Dandy nice day. Marion came over in A.M. & had dinner with us. Mon, Marion
& I went to Decorah in P.M. Went the river road too see the destruction
made by the rain & high water. Very large crowd in town. We got our little
chickens 304 of them. P'd $24.10 for them. Got home about 6. Dean mowed
most of the day. Mon & I went up to Ed Knoke's awhile in eve.
Tues. June 30
Dandy nice day. Mon & Dean fixed up the mower in A.M. & Mon mowed the
road sides. We put the little chickens in the brooder house this morn. Dean
& I went down to the river about 11 too see the high water. It had gone
down quite a bit by that time though. It had been all over Bluffton (about)
& over all the roads down along the river. Mon & I went over & got
Marion after dinner & then up & got mama & went to Mabel. Got home
about 5. We went to B.O. in eve. Fritz & Walter went along. Went to the
Show. "Pittsburg Kid". Billy Con. Good show & a big crowd. Got
home about 12. Ruth & Francis were here in eve while we were gone. Got a
letter from Arthur today.
Wed. July 1
Nice day but cool & windy. I washed. The men plowed corn. Mon & I went
over to Marion's after dinner & picked the raspberries. Got quite
a big kettle full. Mon went up to Fritz in eve to a school meeting. Mrs. K.
& Ruth came over here while Louie was up to Fritz's. I got a letter
from Arthur & a card from "Wimpie" today. Cool nite.

Nice day. The men plowed corn. Mon went to B.O. awhile in P.M.
Fri. July 3
Nice day. Dean plowed corn. Mon & I went over & got Marion early in
A.M. & went to Mabel. Darlene went along too. I got a set of lower teeth
today. Marion came home to dinner with us. Mon plowed corn in P.M. Mon, Dean
& I went to Decorah in eve too take the eggs down & do some trading.
When we got down town we found it was a big nite there. Bond Drive. They had
a parade & program. Very large crowd in town. We got home about 12.
Sat. July 4
Had a little shower early in A.M. but it cleared off & was a nice day. Quite
warm. Mon & Dean went to B.O. awhile early in A.M. & then they bro't
Ruth home with them. We took our dinner & went to Cold Water. They fished
in P.M. but Mon was the only one who got anything. He got 1 trout. We got home
about 5. Went up town in eve. Very large crowd in town. Dean went to Mabel with
Clyde Q. in eve. They got home a little while after we did. We got home about

Nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & there was quite a lot of thunder
& lightning & a little sprinkle but that was all. Dean went fishing.
He got 15 little fellows. Mon & I were alone all day.
Mon. July 6
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed corn all day. Mon & Dean
went over to Marion's a little while early in A.M. too see about the calves
& then Marion came home with them & Mon took him to Decorah too see
Dr. Stabo about his hand & arm. Mon didn't get back home until after
3. He mowed the lawn after he got home & did some odd jobs. I got a letter
from Arthur today.
Tues. July 7
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed corn in A.M. Dean fixed the yard for the little chickens
& did odd jobs. Queen had a little colt last nite & Dean bro't
her up with the other horses this morn & Mon put her across the road. The
colt got in the sink hole & Dean & I had quite a time getting him out.
Dean plowed in P.M. We went up town to the Show in eve. Fritz & Walter went
along. Good Show. "Bad lands of Dakota". Large crowd out. Carol
Jacobson's number was called for the $50 but he wasn't there so
they drew quite a few numbers & then Josie Cox got the $10. Got home about
12. I got a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. July 8
Mighty warm day. Dean plowed corn all day. Mon went over to Marion's in
A.M. & then took Marion to Decorah to the Dr. They got back here at noon.
Mon mowed in P.M. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Maxine & Arlin
were here in eve.
Thurs. July 9
Rather cloudy & dark all day. Started to rain about 5 & rained quite
hard at times. Dean plowed corn. Mon & I went over to Marion's in
A.M. & picked the raspberries. Got quite a few. Florence came over after
me about 4 & we went to L.A.S. at the church. Valeda W., Babe F. & Em
Allen entertained. Quite a few out. Had a fine supper. We were invited to a
party for Manford Whitney & Otto Koenig at the Hall in eve but we didn't
go. They are too be inducted into the Army the 17th.
Fri. July 10
Pretty warm day. Really hot. Mon had Glen Rollins come down in A.M. & take
4 head of cattle to Decorah to the Sale. He rode down with Glen & rode back
to the 4 corners with Walt R. & then walked home from there. Dean was over
to Howards awhile in A.M. He plowed corn in P.M. Mon went over to Marions a
little while late in P.M. We had a shower in the nite. Mon got a shave &
hair cut in Decorah today. I got a letter from Arthur.
Sat. July 11
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. Marion came over in A.M. & we went to Decorah
about 10:30. I got my hair fixed. Run around town with Olive afterward. Not
so many in town. We got home about 5. Went up town in eve. Quite a few in town.
Mon & I came home about 12. Dean went somewhere with Clifford Dawley so
he didn't get home until later.
Sun. July 12
Dandy nice warm day. Dean was gone all day. Didn't do much of anything.
Mon. July 13
Rained very hard all A.M. Bad lightning & thunder. Cleared off in P.M. &
was quite nice. Didn't do much of anything. Got a letter from Arthur.
Had a little calf today.
Tues. July 14
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. We went to B.O. in eve. Fritz went along.
Went to the Show. Large crowd out. Ice Scapades. Good skating. Arlin Emery got
the $50. We got home about 1. Rained in the nite.
Wed. July 15
Rained very hard all A.M. Hard thunder & lightning again. Nice in P.M. Got
a letter from Arthur.
Thurs. July 16
Mighty hot day. Mon & Dean went over to Marion's early in A.M. &
then he came home with them & we went to Decorah. He had too go back to
the Dr. Got home about 4. Got a new 3 burner oil stove. Just a small one &
an electric toaster.
Fri. July 17
Mighty hot day. Mon mowed in A.M. & they put in a couple of jags in the
barn in P.M. I went to Club at Fern's in P.M. with Gladys. Not so many
out. We had a swell lunch. Miss Good the County Nurse met with us & told
us about the Home Nursing Course.
Sat. July 18
Pretty warm day. Nice until late in P.M. it clouded up & rained very hard.
We put up hay in P.M. Mon & Dean just went out after a load & it started
too rain so they only got a little on the wagon & they both got wet. We
went up town in eve. The M.E.L.A.S. had an ice cream social in the church basement,
on account of the rain. Had a pretty good crowd for the nite. We got home about
12.
Sun. July 19
Dandy nice day but cooler. Arlin & Maxine were over for dinner & stayed
until about 5:30. Dave was here awhile in A.M. Dean went over to Howard's
awhile in A.M.
Mon. July 20
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went to Decorah in A.M. too get some
harness fixed & get some single trees. Dean mowed in A.M. We put hay in
the barn in P.M. Bill Halse died at the Decorah Hospital today.
Tues. July 21
Dandy nice day. Dean plowed corn in A.M. & Mon mowed. We put hay in the
barn in P.M. Went to the Show in eve. Fritz & Walter went along. Barbara
Stanwick & Henry Fonda in "You Belong to Me". It was good. Good
crowd out. Got home about 12. I got a letter from Arthur today. Maxine had an
operation on her nose this A.M. at La Crosse.
Wed. July 22
Dandy nice day. Dean plowed corn in A.M. & Mon mowed. We put up hay in P.M.
I got a letter from Arthur today. Bill Halse was buried today. The funeral service
was at Bluffton & the burial at B.O. this P.M.
Thurs. July 23
Dandy nice day. Dean plowed corn in A.M. & Mon mowed. Put up hay in P.M.
Finished filling the barn this P.M. We went up town awhile in eve. Large crowd
in town.
Fri. July 24
Nice day. Dean mowed in A.M. & Mon did odd jobs. Mon went over to Marions
a little while just about noon. We put up hay in P.M. Put up the poles in A.M.
& starting stacking out doors this P.M. The hay loader broke just as Dean
was getting the next to the last load so we didn't get all put up that
was down. Mon & I went up town in eve. Mon got the piece of the loader welded
& I went up to mamas. Dean went over to Howard's. Little son born
to Alice & Lyle Wilbur today. Curtis Albert.
Sat. July 25
Had quite a shower early in A.M. or rather 3 or 4 of them. Looked quite rainy
& did sprinkle off & on until about 10. Mon & I went over &
got Marion & then up & got mama & went to Decorah about 10:30. Quite
nice down there in P.M. I got my hair fixed. We got home about 5:30. Did up
the chores right away & went up town early. The Joan of Arc had an ice cream
Social in the Hall for the benefit of the cemetry. Planned on having it on Cecil
Wicks' lawn but it looked quite rainy & sprinkled off & on so
we had it in the Hall. Pretty good crowd out. Mon, Marion & I came home
about 12 & Dean came later with Clyde. We got a card from Ruth today. She
is at Kenneth's but leaving for California.
Sun. July 26
Dandy nice day. Mon & Dean went over to Marion's early in A.M. awhile
& helped him & then he came back & helped them fix the hay loader.
He went home about 4. Dean went over to Howard's in P.M.
Mon. July 27
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. We put up a load of hay just before dinner.
The last one down. They started too cut grain in P.M. Mon went up town at noon
& got twine. I got a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. July 28
Had a nice shower in A.M. Cleared off about 11 & was nice the rest of the
day until late in P.M. we had another little shower & then it was nice after
that again. Mon went to B.O. early in A.M. & got the car fixed. They worked
in the grain field in P.M. until it rained. I went over to Pearl's awhile
in P.M. Harold Seelye was here in A.M. getting money for the U.S.O. We went
up town in eve. Fritz went along to. Went to the Show. Range Busters in "Saddle
Mountain Round Up". It was good. Large crowd & no one got the money.
We got home about 11:15.
Wed. July 29
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Looked rainy at times but didn't rain. The
men worked in the harvest field. I went to Lutheran L.A.S. at the church in
P.M. with Kate L. Pearl, Mrs. [Thomp?] & Mrs. Scott entertained. Had a swell
supper. Quite a few out. Mon & I got a card from Ruth from L.A. & Dean
got one from Arthur from there. We had another little calf today. Rained in
the nite.

Dandy nice day. The men worked in the harvest field in P.M.
Fri. July 31
Dandy nice day. The men worked in the harvest field all day. Mon took me up
to Gladys at noon & I went to Club at Alice Seelye's with her in P.M.
Dorothy S. & her kiddies went too. Good crowd out & we had a good lunch.
We went up town a few minutes in eve. Had a terribly hard rain in the nite or
rather nearly morning. Lots of thunder & lightning.
Sat. Aug. 1
Rained some early in A.M. but cleared off & was quite a nice day. Mighty
hot. Looked like a bad storm early in eve but we didn't get it. Mon went
over & got Marion & he went to Decorah with us. Very large crowd in
town. Got home about 6:30. Dean went to Matter's in eve with Johnnie,
Mary & Maurice W. & Clyde Q. Mon & I went up town awhile. Marion
& Howard rode up with us & Marion & Ludvig rode back with us. Got
home about 11. We got a letter from Arthur today.

Dandy nice day. Not too warm. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in A.M.

Dandy nice day. I washed. The men finished the harvesting in A.M. Mon &
I went to Decorah in P.M. with some oats & had them ground. Fred W. was
here awhile in eve & then Mon went to B.O. with him. We got a letter from
Arthur today & he sent some dandy good pictures. Cool nite.
Tues. Aug. 4
Dandy nice day. Not too warm. Mon & Dean did odd jobs in A.M. & went
threshing at Fred's in P.M. It was 7:30 when they got home. We went up
town in eve. Went to the Show. Deanne Durbin in "It Began With Eve. It
was sure good. No one got the money. We got home about 11:15. Cool nite.
Wed. Aug. 5
Dandy nice cool day. Good breeze. The men threshed at Fred's all day.
I went over to Bernice's a little while about noon. The men didn't
get home until after 8:30. Rained hard in the nite.
Thurs. Aug. 6
Dandy nice day. The men did odd jobs. We went up town about 4 P.M. I went to
L.A.S. at the church. Picnic supper. Quite a few out. Had a nice supper. I got
a letter from Arthur today.
Fri. Aug. 7
Dandy nice day. The men did odd jobs. Mon went over to Marion's in P.M.
but he wasn't home.
Sat. Aug. 8
Had a terribly hard rain again early this A.M. Lots of lightning & thunder.
Cleared off later & was nice until after 3 P.M. it rained some again. Was
quite nice again late in P.M. & eve but cooler. Mon went over & got
Marion & we went to Decorah about 11. Went the river road. Pine Creek &
the river were quite high. Large crowd in town. I got my hair fixed. We got
home about 5. Went up town awhile in eve. Ruth got home today from California.
Talked over the phone with her a little.
Sun. Aug. 9
Dandy nice day. Charley M. & Christie F. were here early in A.M. trying
too fix the telephone & then Mon went over & got Ruth & she came
over & spent the day with us. Chas. W. came over about noon & Dean went
over to his folks with him.

Dandy nice day. Mon & I went over to Mabel early in A.M. Mama went along
too. The men went over to Fred's right after dinner too thresh & I
went over to help Bernice. They started threshing for Roy about 4 P.M. Lizzie
& Marie & Madonna were there helping too. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. Aug. 11
Dandy nice day. We were all over at Roy's again today threshing. Doesn't
thresh too good. Rather damp. We went to B.O. in eve. Went to the Show. Abbot
& Costello. Good show. Large crowd. No one got the money. Got home about
11:30. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. Aug. 12
Dandy nice day. We were all at Roy's again today. They got thro'
about 4 & started up at Howard's. I didn't help Pearl.
Thurs. Aug. 13
Dandy nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up but didn't rain. Dean
went to Howard's threshing & Mon & I went to Decorah about 10
too get food for threshers. Got home before 12 & Mon went over & got
Dave too come & help him turn out shocks for awhile. They started threshing
here at 2:40 & got thro' about 7:40. Went thro' just fine. Bernice
helped me & Bill & Lenna came up so Lenna helped. Mon & I took Bernice
home about 10. Rather late getting thro' but we finished threshing anyway.
It rained in the nite. We had 755 bu.
Fri. Aug. 14
Rained for awhile in the morning but cleared off & was a nice day. We went
up town about 11. I went up to mamas & was there for dinner. We came home
about 3. Dean mowed the lawn after we got home. Mon got a letter from Arthur
today.
Sat. Aug. 15
Dandy nice day but cool. Nice breeze all day. Fred & Arthur was here all
A.M. working with the threshing rig. They left about 12. Mon & Dean threshed
at Harry's in P.M. We went up town in eve. Went over & got Marion
& took him home again. Mike Blaess rode down to Howard's with us too.
Dean went some where with Chas. W. so he didn't come home with us.
Sun. Aug. 16
Dandy nice day. Dean went over to Chas. W's in A.M. early & didn't
get home until in the nite some time. Mon went over to Louie's early in
A.M. & then he & I went over to Arlins & Maxine's & spent
the day. Mrs. Bender & Vernie were there for dinner too. Arlin had to thresh
at Erlin Stortz's in P.M. so Mon went up there with him. Maxine &
I went up to Ginapp's & to Alice & Lyle's in P.M. but no
one at home either place. We went over to Mrs. Benders & got some Whitney
apples later in P.M. Mon & I came home about 5:30. Ruth, Francis, Uncle
Dan & Larry Keefe had been here this P.M.
Mon. Aug. 17
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. The men threshed at Fritz's & Gust's.
I washed & did part of the ironing.
Tues. Aug. 18
Had a shower early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. I went to Decorah
awhile in P.M. with Pearl. She & the kids were over here awhile after we
got home. Mon took some oats to Decorah in P.M. & had them ground. He didn't
get home until after 7. He stopped at Ole's on his way home. Marion came
home with him & then went up town with us later. I went to the Show. Gene
Autry in "Down Mexico Way". It was good. Large crowd out. Leslie
Latterman got the $50. We got home about 11. I got a card & a letter from
Arthur today. He is out on desert maneuvers now.
Wed. Aug. 19
Dandy nice warm day. Mon & Dean went up to Ed Dinger's & threshed
today. They rode with Roy. Dean went over to Howard's a few minutes in
eve.
Thurs. Aug. 20
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon drove up to Joe Manuels too thresh. They finished
there in P.M. & started at Erlin Stoskoph's. Mon didn't thresh
there. I went to L.A.S. in P.M. with Stella H., Bernice & Lizzie, they entertained.
Had a pretty good crowd for such a busy time. Had a grand supper. Got home about
8. Got a letter from Arthur today. Warm nite.
Fri. Aug. 21
Another warm day but a nice south breeze that helped a lot. Dean threshed at
Erlin S's. He went with Roy. They didn't get home until 8:30 but
they finished. That is the last of the threshing. Mon & I went to Mabel
in A.M. Mama & Isa rode along from B.O. Mon went over to Marion's
in P.M. but he wasn't home.
Sat. Aug. 22
Nice day. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & Mon, Marion & I went
to Decorah about 11. I got my hair fixed. Quite a few in town. Fair Week but
lots on the street. Marion went to the Fair with Fred. Mon & I came home
about 5. Dean went to the Fair in eve with Arthur & Loretta. Mon & I
went up town. Got home about 11:30. Chas. W. was here awhile early in A.M. &
then Dean went up town a few minutes with him. Cold nite.
Sun. Aug. 23
Nice day. We went up home & spent the day. Claudes, Lesters, Howard &
Charlotte & the kiddies were there too. Had a good dinner & a good time.
Claude, Marvin & Mon went to Decorah to the Fair & Ball game in P.M.

Only 32º this morn & frost on the grass didn't hurt anything.
Dandy nice day. Mon went up & got Isa & Loyal in A.M. early & she
bro't her washing down here & did it. Mon went back to B.O. &
got the car fixed. Dean & Loyal went fishing & got quite a few. We took
them home after chores. Got a letter from Arthur.

Nice day but terribly windy. I washed & ironed. The men didn't do
too much. We went up town in eve. Went to the Show. They had it in the Hall
tonite. Cool outside. Quite a good crowd & a good show "Snuffy Smith
Dean Emery got the $10. We got home about 11.
Wed. Aug. 26
Started to rain about 4:30 & it sure rained some. Just a steady down pour
most of the time until after 11. It let up then but was dark & damp &
cool all day. We went to Mabel in P.M. Dean stayed in B.O.
Thurs. Aug. 27
Not so nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was a nice day but warm. Mon,
Dean & I washed the car in P.M. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Fri. Aug. 28
Nice warm day. I went to Mabel in A.M. early with Fritz & Walter. Mon &
Dean took me up to Dorothy Seelye's too Club in P.M. & then they went
back to the school house & helped Fritz with some work there. Good crowd
out to Club & a good lunch. The men came after me about 5:30. Got a letter
from "Wimpie" today. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Sat. Aug. 29
Plenty warm day. Mon went over & got Marion early in A.M. & we all went
to Decorah a little after 10. Mon & Dean both got their hair cut. Quite
a crowd in town. Got home about 6:45. We went up town in eve. Quite a little
excitement up there. Ralph Fredenburgh hit Clate Reed with his car, accidentally.
Clate didn't get hurt too much but it caused quite a commotion. Didn't
get home until after 1.
Sun. Aug. 30
Dandy nice day. Mon went over & got Ruth a little after 9. Arlin & Maxine
came for dinner & then some of Ruth's friend's came from Waterloo
& they came over after her just as dinner was about ready so she had too
leave. Maxine & Arlin stayed until about 5:30 Ruth came back in eve awhile.
Mon. Aug. 31
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. I washed & ironed. Dean went up to Gust's
in A.M. & got the manure spreader & hauled manure all day. Mon started
painting the garage. We got 2 letters from Arthur today. Howard was over in
eve. Our school started today with Rosemary McCabe as teacher.
Tues. Sept. 1
Had a few showers off & on in A.M. but nothing much the men were out in
most of it. Nice in P.M. Pretty warm. Dean hauled manure all day. Mon painted
some in A.M. Mon & I went up & got mama in P.M. & went to Decorah.
We took some oats down. Had some ground & some hulled. Large crowd in town.
We went up town in eve to the Show. "Texas". Good show & quite
a crowd. No one got the money. We got home about 11:30. Looked pretty stormy
when we came home but it only sprinkled a little. Cooler though. Saw Ruth P.
in Decorah.
Wed. Sept. 2
Not very nice day. Dark & damp. Got quite a lot colder in P.M. & eve.
Mon & Dean took care of the little pigs & put rings in their noses in
A.M. We have 71. We went up town in P.M. I went up to Isa's & made
5 qts. of kraut. They came down to our house for supper. Frances G. came down
with them. They went home about 9:30. We got a letter from Arthur today.
Thurs. Sept. 3
Dandy nice day. But cool. Dean hauled manure all day. Mon mowed the lawn in
A.M. & did some other jobs. Mon took me to B.O. in P.M. to L.A.S. Picnic
supper. Not so many out. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Fri. Sept. 4
Quite a nice day. Dean hauled manure. Mon & I went out to Cresco to the
Fair about 11 A.M. Not such a large crowd out there. I went up in the Grand
Stand but there wasn't too much going on horse races etc. No free acts.
We stayed until after the Ball Game. Got home about 7.
Sat. Sept. 5
Looked rather rainy in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Quite warm.
Mon went over & got Marion & we all went to Decorah. I got my hair fixed.
Quite a crowd in town. Dean came home with Arthur W. We got home about 6. Went
up town again in eve. Marion, Allen & Clyde rode up with us. Dean &
Clyde went with Chas. W. & Marion went to Breezy Hill with Fred W. to Roger
Bender's shower. Allen rode home with us. We got home about 12. Dean stayed
all nite with Chas.
Sun. Sept. 6
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. Looked quite rainy but didn't
rain. Dean went with Chas. & was gone most of the day. Mon & I went
up home in P.M. Susan, Frank Loretta & Mary were over from Mason City. They
left shortly after we got up there. Aunt Eunice, Vin & Eunice were there
awhile too. Mettie was there a little while before we came home. Dean went over
to Chas. in eve.
Mon. Sept. 7
Rained some early in A.M. but quit raining but it was damp & misty &
dark all day. Didn't do too much. Isa, Lester & Loyal started for
California this morning. Ruth went back to Hammond today for another year of
school. I went over to Pearl's a little while in A.M. We had 3 young roosters
for supper. The first we have had.
Tues. Sept. 8
Not very nice day again. Dark, damp & misty again. We went up town in eve
to the Show. It was in the Hall. "Blondie Goes to College". It was
good. No one got the money. We got 2 letters from Arthur today. Louise Nash
died tonite.
Wed. Sept. 9
Not very nice day but a little brighter. Damp all A.M. but a little better in
P.M. Lydia & Dorothy were here in A.M. selling honey. Arthur Smith was here
a while in A.M. Louie K. was here a few minutes at noon. Mon & I went to
La Crosse in P.M. after Ruth. She came into Lax on the Hiawatha at 5 P.M. We
got up there about 3 & then run around town until 4:30 & then went up
to N. La X & met the train. We stopped at Caledonia & got a lunch on
our way home. Got home about 7. It was quite nice in eve. Mon & I each got
a new hat in La X.
Thurs. Sept. 10
Quite a nice day. Rather warm. I washed & ironed. Mon went up to Fritz in
A.M. Dean hauled manure. They went out & cut a jag of corn in P.M. for the
hogs. Dave was over a while in P.M. I got a letter from Marie today.
Fri. Sept. 11
Mighty nice warm day. Wind blew quite hard in P.M. & eve. Had a quite a
hard electric storm about 11:30 eve. Rained hard too. Ruth was over a minute
early in A.M. Mon took some oats to Decorah in A.M. & had them ground. He
& I went to Louise's funeral at the M.E. church at 2:30 P.M. Rev.
Goodrick & Rev. Kess talked. Velda K sang & Joyce S. played. Zoa, Elsie
& I were too go down to Krumm's & have lunch for them when they
came home but they all went over to Bernard's for lunch. Very large crowd
out to the funeral. They couldn't all get in the church & so many,
many flowers. Harry Q. was here awhile at noon. Got a card from Isa today.
Sat. Sept. 12
Dandy nice day only a little cooler. We went over & got Marion about noon
& went to Decorah. Large crowd in town. We got home about 6:40. Went to
B.O. in eve. Quite a few in B.O. too. We got a letter from Arthur today. Ed
Knoke was down awhile in A.M. Margaret Moran & Merlin Snell were married
at the M.E. Church at Decorah at 4 P.M. Didn't go up to the church. They
had a shower for them at Breezy Hill in eve but we didn't go to the either.
We had another little calf today.
Sun. Sept. 13
Not too nice a day. Rather gloomy & damp in P.M. & eve. We didn't
do much of anything. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in P.M. Ruth went
back to Hammond this P.M. Her folks took her to La Crosse. Had quite a shower
late in P.M.
Mon. Sept. 14
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Quite warm. We
went to Mabel in P.M. Stopped & took mama along. Dean had some teeth filled
& a tooth pulled. We got 2 letters from Arthur today & a card from Isa.
Ed & Mrs. Knoke were here awhile after dinner. Little daughter born to Marie
& Paul Snyder today. We went up town in eve. I went up to Zoa's to
practice. Got home about 10:30.
Tues. Sept. 15
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was very nice in P.M. Quite warm.
Raymond Young was here most of the A.M. Mon painted in P.M. & Dean mowed
weeds. We went up town in eve to the Show. Large crowd out. "Freckles
Comes Home". It was good. Pearl Darling got the $30.00. We got home about
11.

Quite a nice day. Very warm in P.M. & quite windy. I washed & ironed.
Mon painted. Dean mowed weeds & hauled in a jag of fodder in P.M. Mon &
I went up to Ole's in P.M. & got some apples. I got a card from Isa
today.
Thurs. Sept. 17
Looked mighty rainy early in A.M. & the wind blew terribly hard for awhile
but it just sprinkled a little. Not such a nice day. Sun shone a little but
not much. Rained a little late in P.M. & then was nice for awhile in eve.
Started too storm tho' early in the nite & kept it up all nite. Terrible
lightning & thunder & it rained hard too. Not very nice nite. We went
up town about noon. I went to L.A.S. at the basement. Florence E., Muriel T.
& Miriam W. entertained for dinner. Big crowd & a dandy dinner. I stopped
in too see Mr. & Mrs. Koenig a few minutes. Mon & Dean went to Mabel
in P.M. Dean had some more dental work done. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. Lightning struck Walt Rehwinkel's barn in the storm early this
A.M. & burned it.
Fri. Sept. 18
Not such a nice day. Didn't do too much. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Sat. Sept. 19
Cold dark & damp in A.M. Brightened up some in P.M. but still cool. We went
to Decorah. Mama & Marion went along. Big crowd in town. I got my hair fixed
& Mon got a hair cut. Mama came home too supper with us & then we went
up town in eve. I went up to the church too practice. Mon & I came home
about 11. Dean went with Chas. W. Johnnie, Maurice & May Whalen, Clyde Q.
& Edna & Jean Knoke got run into by a truck when they were going into
Decorah & it put Johnnie, Maurice, Edna & Jean in the Hospital. We got
up about 12 & took Ludvig & Mrs. & Allen & Ed K. too the Hospital
but Clyde & Mary had gotten patched up & left before that. Ed saw the
girls a few minutes. We got home about 1:30. Mighty cold clear nite.
Sun. Sept. 20
Our 26th Wedding Anniversary. 30º this morn. Dandy nice day but a little
cool. Froze but the frost didn't seem too hurt anything. Dean went with
Chas. today. Mon took me too church. Bishop Edwin F. Lee spoke & it sure
was good. Very large crowd out. I sang in the choir. Sat around all the rest
of the day alone.
Mon. Sept. 21
Nice in A.M. but clouded up later in P.M. & rained quite hard. I washed.
Mon painted in A.M. & Dean did odd jobs hauling up corn & cordwood.
Mon & I went to Decorah a little while in P.M. Took some oats down &
had them hulled & ground. Got a letter from Arthur today & a letter
from Ruth & an enlarged picture of Arthur that she had finished for us.
It is just fine. Fritz & Joe Wilhelm were here just after dinner on the
bond drive. I got a crate of prunes $1.05 & a box of pears $1.79 in town
this P.M.
Tues. Sept. 22
Not such a very nice day but not too bad. Rather cool. Dean hauled up cord wood
all day. Mon did odd jobs. I ironed & canned prunes in P.M. We went up town
in eve. Went to the Show. "Go West Young Lady". It was sure good.
Quite a few out. No one got the money. Got home about 11. Dean came home with
Chas. It started raining about 7 & kept it up most of the nite I guess.
Rained hard too.
Wed. Sept. 23
Not very nice day. Rained most of the A.M. Got a lot colder in P.M. & the
wind blew hard. Cleared off though. We put up the heating stove. Mon & Dean
went & helped Roy round up & load some cattle in A.M. They went up town
after dinner & I went up later with Mart & Kate. Went to Lutheran L.A.S.
at the church. Mate Murdock & Edith Bergman served. They had a dandy supper.
Got a letter from Isa today. Froze tonite.
Thurs. Sept. 24
30º this morn. Not too nice a day. Mon & Dean started too haul up wood
in A.M. & they broke the tongue in the wagon so Mon had too go to Decorah
& get a new one. Dean hauled manure & did other things then. Walt R.
bro't the tongue out for Mon & he was here awhile late in P.M. Froze
hard tonite & I mean hard. Got a letter from Arthur today. Canned some apples
this P.M.
Fri. Sept. 25
20º this morn. Quite nice early in A.M. but it clouded up & wasn't
so nice later. Started too rain about 5 & then it turned into snow &
snowed into the nite. Mon & Dean did odd jobs. They hauled up some wood
& hauled in a jag of corn. I went to Club at Elsie's in P.M. with
Pauline. We had initiation. Mrs. Bestul joined. Not so many out but we had a
good time & a swell lunch. We went up town a little while after Club. Dean
went over to Howard's awhile in eve. I canned pears this A.M.
Sat. Sept. 26
30º this morn. Everything looked like Xmas this morn. The trees all covered
with snow & bent nearly to the ground. Dark, dreary cold day. Mon went over
& got Marion in A.M. & we went to Decorah. Very large crowd in town.
I went up too see Dr. Dalquist. Marion came home too supper with us & then
we went up town in eve. Had oysters for supper. We got home about 12:45. Dean
rode home with Jessie D. Cold nite.
Sun. Sept. 27
28º this morn. Quite a nice bright day but cold. The wind blew quite hard.
Dean was over to Howard's awhile in A.M. Cold nite.
Mon. Sept. 28
18º this morn. Dandy nice day. Warmed up quite a little during the day.
I washed & ironed. Dean finished hauling up the wood. Mon painted some &
did other jobs. We went over to Fred W's in eve with Fritz's. Fred
had a party for the people he threshed for but not so many out. Gust's
& Howard's & Marion besides we folks. Bill & Lenna & Lester
Gullickson were up from Decorah. We played cards. Had a dandy lunch. Got home
about 2. Marion rode home with Fritz too.
Tues. Sept. 29
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. Did a little of everything around here. The men
went out & picked a jag of corn in P.M. We went up to the Show in eve. Gene
Autry in "Sierra Sue". It was good. Good crowd too. Gladys Carolan's
name was called but she wasn't there. Jamie Whalen rode home with us.
Got home about 10:30. Got a letter from Arthur today. Arthur & Loretta were
here a few minutes in eve.
Wed. Sept. 30
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon started cutting beans in A.M. "Wimpie"
came home last nite on a short furlough & they were all over there after
dinner awhile mama was along too. "Wimpie" sure looks fine &
is fine. They stayed until about 4. Mon went out & cut beans after they
left. I got a letter from Isa today.
Thurs. Oct. 1
Grand day. Nice & warm. Mon raked up beans in A.M. & Dean went with
"Wimpie" & Marion a little while squirrel hunting, they didn't
get anything though. Mon & Dean bunched beans in P.M. We went up town in
eve. Got 2 letters from Arthur today. He is a Corporal Technician now &
is being sent to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. I sold 34 old hens @ .14¢. They
weighed 106 lbs. & bro't $14.84.
Fri. Oct. 2
Dandy nice warm day. The men piled up beans in A.M. & Dean mowed the rest
of them in P.M. Mon helped Albert E. in P.M. put in some cement work. Got 2
cards from Arthur today.
Sat. Oct. 3
Rather dark & damp in A.M. The men raked up beans & piled some. Mon
Marion & I went to Decorah in P.M. Ludvig & Allen helped Dean pile up
beans until it rained & did it ever rain. Most of the P.M. Sometimes mighty
hard. A lot of water fell. We got home about 6:30. I got my hair fixed &
went too see Dr. D. We went up town in eve to a farewell party for Raymond,
Luella & Roger. They are moving to Marion & the men are working at Cedar
Rapids. Not such a crowd out on account of the rain. They had it in the Hall
& danced. Gene Kinyon & son & Harold Richert played. We got home
about 1:30.
Sun. Oct. 4
Quite a nice day until late in P.M. It clouded up & rained some. Had quite
a shower in the nite. Dean & Clyde went squirrel hunting. Dean got 3. Mon,
Lizzie & I went to B.O. in P.M. I went up to mama's but she wasn't
home so I went up to Gladys A's. with Lizzie & spent the P.M.
Mon. Oct. 5
Nice day. I washed in A.M. & the men got a jag of corn. We took oats down
in P.M. & had them ground & hulled. Johnnie & Maurice rode down
with us. Didn't get home until after 6:30. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. Got a letter from Arthur. He is in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Got a letter
from Isa too.
Tues. Oct. 6
Dandy nice day. The men finished piling up the beans in A.M. & Dean helped
fill silo at Ludvig's in P.M. We went up to the Show in eve. It wasn't
so good. "What's Cooking". Not such a large crowd out either.
Mabel Kimber's name was called but she wasn't there. Maurice &
Jamie rode home with us.
Wed. Oct. 7
Dandy nice day. We were all up to Ludvigs helping until about 3 P.M. Kate helped
Mrs. too. The men got a load of corn after we got home & I ironed.
Thurs. Oct. 8
Dandy nice day. The men got the corn binder around in A.M. & started cutting
corn. Mon took me to Mabel in P.M. & I got my teeth back. Cost $10. Dean
went out in the woods while we were gone & got a couple of squirrels. We
went up town in eve. I went up to Aunt Alice's to a meeting of the finance
com. of the L.A.S. Mama was there awhile & she & Aunt Alice & I
planned our Aide. We got home about 12. Got a letter from Arthur.
Fri. Oct. 9
Dandy nice day. Mon cut corn in A.M. & Dean cleaned the horse tank &
then went out to the field. They got a load of corn in P.M. Got a letter from
Ruth today. Rev. Goodrick was here awhile in P.M.

Dandy nice day. Mon & Dean cut & shocked corn in A.M. Mon & I went
& got Marion & mama & went to Decorah in P.M. Large crowd in town.
Mama came home too supper with us & we took her home in eve. Marion rode
up town with us. We got home about 11:30.

Dandy day. Dean went over to Howard's early in A.M. & then went with
Leonard B. over to Blaess's & Charlie W's. He got home about
7. Mon & I left here about 12:45 & went to Frankville, got Francis &
Ruth & went on to Lansing. Drove around Lansing awhile, then went &
bought some fish. Stopped too see Floyd & Blanche a few minutes. Got back
to Frankville at 6 & came right on home. Got home at 7. Dave was here awhile
in A.M. also Bill & Lenna.
Mon. Oct. 12
Dandy day. Mon & Dean cut & shocked corn in A.M. & picked a load
of corn in P.M. I dug the dahlias, cannas & gladiola's today. Went
over to Pearl's a little while in P.M. The trucks were going by here all
day & there was so much dust I couldn't wash. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. Got a letter from Arthur today. He sent some pictures that were taken
while they were in the desert.
Tues. Oct. 13
Dandy day. The men cut & shocked corn in A.M. & went over to Marions
in P.M. A couple of our calves got into "Happys" & they had
too go & get them back into Marions pasture. Dean mowed the lawn after they
got home. We went up to the Show in eve. Quite a crowd, but no one got the money.
Geo. McIntire rode up town with us. We got home about 10:30.
Wed. Oct. 14
Dandy nice day. Mon went up & got mama in A.M. & she was here all day.
We took her home in eve. We washed & ironed. Dressed chickens & got
them ready for tomorrow. Mon finished cutting corn in A.M. Dean shocked. They
got a load of corn in P.M.
Thurs. Oct. 15
Dandy nice day. Mon took Lizzie Bernice & I to B.O. about 10:30 Aunt Alice,
mama & I entertained L.A.S. at the Church basement. Had a pretty good crowd
for such a busy time. Had a grand dinner. Took in $17.10. Bernice went to Decorah
in P.M. & Lizzie rode home with Kate L. Mon came up after me. We got home
about 4:30. The men shocked corn today. Got a letter from Arthur & some
more pictures & a letter from Isa.
Fri. Oct. 16
Dandy day. The men finished shocking corn & tying in A.M. We went to Decorah
in P.M. I got my hair fixed & Mon got a hair cut. We had a card party here
in eve. Gust's, Fritz's, Harry's, Howard's, Fred, Arthur
& Loretta. Roy's, Chas. W. Marion, Bill & Lenna. The men played
cards & we women visited. Had lunch. They went home about 1 or a little
after.
Sat. Oct. 17
Dandy day. The men husked corn in A.M. & picked a load in P.M. I went out
& drove the team awhile for them in P.M. Chas. W. was here for supper &
went up town with us. Mon & I came home about 9:45. Dean stayed later. Norman
Fisher's house burned tonite. They gave the line call about 11. Reardon's
man came up this morn & culled out my old hens. Sold 34 they weighed 150
lbs. @ 13¢ bro't $19.50 4 old roosters weighed 22 lbs. @ 10 bro't
$2.20 Got a letter from Arthur.

Dandy nice day. Dean went early in A.M. with Leonard B. & took Chas. W.
to Prairie Du Sac Wis. They didn't get back until in the nite. Mon &
I were alone all day.
Mon. Oct. 19
Dandy nice day. Lester Bronner sawed our wood this A.M. Albert E. & Fritz
helped. Pearl helped me. They got thro' a little after 12. The men got
a load of corn in P.M. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. Oct. 20
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean mowed at Gust's all day, he
came home for dinner. Mon went to Decorah a little after nine & didn't
get home until after 6. Had to get the wagon fixed. We went up to the Show in
eve. Large crowd out. "North To Klondike" with Andy Devine. It was
good. No one got the $50. Drew a few times too give away $10. Julia Usgaard
got that. Got home about 11. Got a letter from Arthur today. Little son born
to Loretta & Arthur W. today.
Wed. Oct. 21
Not such a nice day. Quite cold & the wind blew hard. The men went up to
Gust's & raked & bunched hay in A.M. Marion helped them &
was here for dinner. Gust helped them haul hay in P.M. They hauled down 4 loads.
Gust & Marion were here for supper. Got a letter from Isa today.
Thurs. Oct. 22
Not such a nice A.M. but it cleared off in P.M. & was quite nice. Rained
& snowed off & on in A.M. The wind blew hard & cold. Dean hauled
away cobs from where they feed the hogs in A.M. & they got a load of corn
in P.M. Froze quite hard tonite. Loretta & Arthur's baby died this
morn.
Fri. Oct. 23
Cold windy day but the sun shone part of the day. Gust & Marion helped the
men in A.M. & they got the rest of the hay hauled down. They were here for
dinner. Dean picked corn in P.M. Mon & I went to Mabel. Dean went over to
Howard's in eve. Got a letter from Ruth today. Loretta & Arthur's
baby was buried today.
Sat. Oct. 24
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. The men picked corn in A.M. We went over & got
Marion in P.M. & went to Decorah. Large crowd in town. Had too wait for
Marion so we didn't get home too early. Went up town in eve. Not many
in town. Jamie W. rode home with us. Dean came later with Clyde. The wind got
around in the North late in the nite & it blowed hard & got much colder.
Rained some. Got a letter from Arthur today.

18º this morn. Cold windy day. Mon went up & got mama early this A.M.
& Claude's came over & spent the day. We had a good visit. Mama
went home with Claude's. The wind went down a little in the nite but not
much.

10º this morn. Another cold windy day. Snowed some. The men put some straw
in the cellar way & did some other jobs & then went out & picked
a load of corn. Mon put a storm window on the N. bed room window in P.M. &
got some other things around ready for cold weather. We got a letter from Arthur
today.
Tues. Oct. 27
Nice day. Quite a lot warmer. I washed & ironed the men husked corn in A.M.
& picked in P.M. We went up to the Show in eve. Large crowd out & a
good Show. "Bombay Clipper". No one got the $50 but Walter Nielson
got the $10. We got home about 11.
Wed. Oct. 28
Rather a dark day. The men worked in the corn field all day. Had quite an electrical
storm in eve. Manford Whitney & Vivian Miller were married today.
Thurs. Oct. 29
Dark day again but quite warm. The men worked in the corn field. Gladys came
down at noon & got me & we went to L.A.S. at the basement. Picnic dinner
& a good one. We got home about 4. Dean went up town with Clyde in eve.
It started too rain in the nite & rained quite hard.
Fri. Oct. 30
Rained off & on most of the A.M. Sometimes quite hard. Cleared off late
in P.M. & got some colder. Mon & Dean took me up to go too Club with
Gladys, they went on to B.O. Elsie & Inez went along too. Club was at Muriel
T's. Not so many out but we had a good time & a swell lunch. Came
back to B.O. & rode home with Mon & Dean. We got a letter from Arthur
today.
Sat. Oct. 31
Quite a nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & looked terribly bad
& the wind blew hard & it got colder. It brightened up after that &
was quite nice in eve. The men picked corn in A.M. We went over & got Marion
& then up & got mama & went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed.
Quite a crowd in town. We got home about 6:15. Mama came home with us &
then we took her home in eve. Mon & I came home about 12 & Dean came
with Clyde, later.
Sun. Nov. 1
Snowed most of A.M. & sometimes mighty hard. Cleared off & was quite
nice in P.M. & eve. Dean went to Decorah in A.M. with Arthur W. after Loretta.
She is just getting home from the Hospital. Arthur, Howard & Dean went pheasant
hunting in P.M. They got 2. Arthur was supposed too call in eve but something
happened he didn't. We sat up until 11 waiting for him too call.
Mon. Nov. 2
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off later in A.M. & was quite nice
the rest of the day. Quite windy. Harold Seelye hauled a hog to Decorah for
us in A.M. too have butchered. Mon & I went down too. We got home about
2:30. Dean was out picking corn so Mon went out & helped him finish up the
load. We got a letter from Arthur & one from Isa.
Tues. Nov. 3
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon had too go up & serve on the
Election Board so he was gone all day & nite until 4 A.M. Dean did chores
& other jobs in A.M. & got a load of corn in P.M. We got a letter from
Arthur today. No Show tonite on account of Election.
Wed. Nov. 4
Not very nice day. It did get a little brighter in P.M. but still not too nice.
Rather cold too. We went to Decorah about 10:30. Dean got a hair cut. We got
our lard from the meat shop. Arthur had sent his sleeping bag to Decorah so
we went down to the Express Office & got that. It rained quite hard in the
nite & got colder.

Not such a bad day but cold. I tried out lard all day. Mon fixed the shed &
Dean picked corn. Mon helped him some in P.M. We got a letter from Arthur today.
Fri. Nov. 6
Quite a nice bright day but cold. The men picked corn. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. Marion called from Ludvigs tonite & said one of the calves died.
Will Donald died tonite.
Sat. Nov. 7
Quite a nice day. The rendering truck came about 9:30 & Mon went with him
over to Marion's & got the calf. The men shut up the old hogs &
Melvin Barth came about 10:30 & took them to Decorah took along some for
Fritz too. Artie Mc. came over from Dave's & went to Decorah &
came back with us to. We took the radio down too get it fixed. Saw Olive down
there & run around with her some. We got home about 5. Did up the chores
& went to B.O. in eve. They had the Show tonite. Large crowd out. Gene Autry
in "Cowboy Serenade". The $50 wasn't given away but Melson
Sheley got $10. We got home about 11:30. Dean came later. Got a letter from
Isa today.
Sun. Nov. 8
Quite a nice day. Dean went hunting awhile but he didn't get anything.
Arthur called us about 8:15. We all talked to him & could hear him good.
It sure seemed good too hear his voice again.
Mon. Nov. 9
Started too rain early in A.M. & rained awhile & then it was misty &
damp & dark the rest of the day until after 4 it started too rain again
& rained quite hard for awhile. Mon took some oats down town & had them
ground. He got home about 3:30. Gust & Kate were here a few minutes about
4:30 & they said Marion wasn't very well so Mon went over there, but
he was feeling quite a lot better. Got much colder & snowed a little in
eve. The wind blew hard from the N. all nite. We got a letter from Arthur today.
Tues. Nov. 10
Nice bright day but quite windy & cold. We borrowed a couple of crates this
morn & gathered up our young roosters & took them to Decorah. Wasn't
down there very long. Dean banked the house while we were gone. The men got
a load of corn in P.M. The 57 roosters weighed 188 lbs. @ .16¢ so they
bro't $30.08.
Wed. Nov. 11
Quite a nice day only rather windy & cool. Roy shredded corn today &
the men helped him & I helped Bernice. Lizzie helped too. We got home about
dark.
Thurs. Nov. 12
Dandy nice day. The men went over to Marion's in A.M. early & got
the calves. Mon took Bernice & I to B.O. about 11:30 to the M.E.L.A.S. Sale
& Dinner. Marion went along to. Had a pretty good crowd out to the dinner
& a dandy dinner. The Sale went pretty good to. Gladys bro't us home
about 4:30. Mon & Dean got a load of corn in P.M. Howard was over in eve.
The wind got around in the N. this eve & got quite a little colder. Blew
quite hard all nite to.
Fri. Nov. 13
Windy cold day. The men worked in the corn field all day. They had a shower
for Mr. & Mrs. Manford Whitney at the Hall tonite but we didn't go.
We got a letter from Arthur today.
Sat. Nov. 14
Quite a nice day but a cool south wind. Mon & Dean picked corn in A.M. &
Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed & Mon got his cut.
Mama had gone down on the bus & she rode home with us as did Patsy Kimber
Eileen Wicks & Evelyn Rolfs. Mama came home to supper with us & then
we took her home in eve. Mon & I came home about 11:30 Allen rode home with
us. Dean came later with Leonard B. Dean picked corn in P.M.
Sun. Nov. 15
Dandy nice day. Strong wind. Dean took the team & wagon & went over
& helped Chas. W. husk his corn today. He had a "bee" to get
it out. Mon took me to church in A.M. & then he went over to Chas. after
we got home & helped them finish up. We went over there in eve to a party.
Not many there. The men played cards awhile & then we danced some. Got home
about 2.

Strong wind all day & rather cold but a nice bright day. The men picked
corn. We got a card from Arthur & Dean got a letter from Dale Arnold. He
is in the Hiawaiian Islands. We also got the A.A.A. check for $259.75 today.
Tues. Nov. 17
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men picked corn. We went up town
in eve. Went to the Show. Joe E. Brown in "Shut My Big Mouth". It
wasn't so bad. Quite a few out. No one got the $10. We got home about
11:30. Chas. W. went to Des Moines for exams today.
Wed. Nov. 18
Dandy nice day. The men finished picking the east field of corn this A.M. &
started stacking beans in P.M. Leonard B. & Chas. W. were here awhile in
eve. We got a letter from Arthur today. Chas. didn't pass his exams.
Thurs. Nov. 19
Not such a nice day. Rather misty & damp all day until late in P.M. it got
a little brighter but didn't clear off entirely until in eve & then
it was quite foggy. Warm day. Roy & Ed Arnold helped the men finish stack
the beans today & they stacked some corn too. Got a letter from Isa today.
Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Gust, Kate & Rosemary were here
awhile in eve.
Fri. Nov. 20
Not very nice day. Misty & damp until about 2:30 it started too rain. Kept
raining off & on then all P.M. & eve. Some times quite hard. Got colder
too in eve. The men shredded at Gust's until it got to raining too hard.
Dean went with Leonard B. in eve. They started for Missouri in the nite. We
got a letter from Arthur.
Sat. Nov. 21
Quite a nice day but cold. Mon & I went to Decorah about 11. Quite a few
in town. Got home a little after 5. Went up town awhile in eve. Marion rode
home with us. We got home about 11. Got a letter from Arthur today. Leonard
Blaess & Opal Bloomgreen were married at Kahoka Mo. this P.M. at 3. Dean
& Lyola B. stood up with them. Cold nite.

Cold, damp day. Sun shone a little but not much. We went over to Marion's
& spent the day. Albert, Florence & Norris were there too. Had a good
dinner & lunch & a good time. Chas. W. came along then & stopped
about 4 P.M. We came home a little after 5. Dean got home tonite.
Mon. Nov. 23
Quite a nice day. The men shredded at Gust's until about 3. Mon &
I went over to Bidne's & got our clock & their watches about 4.

Tues. Nov. 24
Dandy nice day. The men shredded at Fritz's. I washed & ironed. We
went up town in eve. Went to the Show "Canal Zone". It was good
& a good crowd. They had a duck "raffle" at Gene's &
Mon got 2 ducks. Marion went to town & back with us.
Wed. Nov. 25
Not such a nice day. Rather dark & damp in A.M. & it started too rain
about noon & kept it up until about 4 it started too snow & kept it
up the rest of P.M. & nite. Turned into quite a blizzard in eve & nite.
Snow drifted quite a bit. The men husked in A.M. & we went to Decorah in
P.M. about 2. I got my hair fixed & Dean got a hair cut. It was mighty nasty
driving home. The school program was tonite but it was so nasty we didn't
go.
Thurs. Nov. 26
Quite a blizzard early in A.M. but let up some later although the wind blew
the snow some all day. We went up home about 12:30 for dinner. Rosemary &
her sister rode up town with us from Gust's. Claudes, Dells, Uncle Geo.
& Wes were at mama's for dinner too. Had a good dinner. Dean went
over to Howard's in eve.
Fri. Nov. 27
Rather a dark day but not so cold. Mon put the paper on the south doors &
he & I dressed a couple of ducks. We went up town in eve to a Shower on
Leonard & Opal at the Hall. Not many out & the bride & groom never
showed up. Roy Halvorson's Orchestra. Good music but some mess. We came
home before it was over. Dean fell on the ice on the pavement & hurt his
ankle. We got home about 1. Started to snow in eve & kept it up all nite.
Sat. Nov. 28
Regular blizzard in A.M. but let up in P.M. & wasn't so bad but cold.
Mon went to B.O. in A.M. & bro't Ruth back for dinner. She is home
for Thanksgiving vacation. Had a good visit. He took her home about 4. Verna
was over in P.M. Dean's foot is terribly sore & kept swelling all
day. He can only hobble around a bit.

Quite a nice day. Didn't do much of anything. Dean's foot is mighty
sore & swollen. Ruth went back to Hammond today.
Mon. Nov. 30
Snowed a light snow all day. Not cold. Walt R. was here for dinner. Marion called
about 3:30 & wanted Mon too take him to Prosper too see about getting some
coal. Mon got back about 5:30. Got a letter from Arthur & one from Isa.
Deans foot is pretty sore but better. The swelling has gone down some.
Tues. Dec. 1
Quite a bright day but colder & the wind blew the snow some. Got much colder
late in P.M. Arlin was here for dinner. Howard was here awhile after dinner.
Dean's foot is better. We didn't get up to the Show tonite. Cold

20º below this morning. Cold day. Rather windy all day. Snowed blowed a
little but not too bad. Dean's foot is quite a little better today &
he was out around, shoveled some snow in P.M. & helped Mon with the chores
in eve. Howard was here in P.M. & eve. Got a letter from Arthur today. Cold

Not such a nice day but not so cold. Tried too snow some but didn't snow
much. Didn't do too much.

Not very nice day. Mon & Dean went over to Marion's in A.M. &
he came home to dinner with them. We went up town awhile in P.M. I went over
to Murdock's awhile & then up to mama's but she left today too
go down & stay with Aunt Lissa so I didn't see her. Chas. Murdock
died suddenly about 3 A.M.

Dandy nice day only cool. Dean was over to Howards awhile in P.M.

Everything covered with frost this A.M. but it cleared off & was a nice
day but cold. I washed & ironed some. The men hauled in some corn fodder
& hauled some wood up to the house. We got a letter from Arthur today. Dean
was over to Howard's in eve. We got a load of coal this A.M.
Tues. Dec. 8
Cold raw day. Tried to snow off & on all day. Mon & I went to B.O. in
P.M. to Charlie Murdock's funeral at the M.E. Church. Very large crowd
out. The 3 ministers Goodrick, Kess & Thompson had charge of the services
& Velda K. sang. Many, many donations of money for cemetry etc. & quite
a few flowers. We went up to the Show in eve. Fritz & Walter went along.
It was good. "Girl From Alaska". Not such a large crowd out. No
one got the money. We got a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. Dec. 9
Not very nice day. Chilly & damp. Mon & Dean went out in P.M. &
picked a load of corn. We got a letter from Sid.
Thurs. Dec. 10
Not very nice day. Tried too snow but it didn't amount too much. Got much
colder late in P.M. Mon & Dean hauled in a couple of jags of corn fodder
in A.M. & Dean helped Howard butcher in P.M. & Mon helped Louie K. saw
wood.
Fri. Dec. 11
Cold day but the sun shone all day. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. &
we went to Decorah. Mama went along too. Large crowd in town. We run around
town all P.M. & it was cold down there. Dean went over to Howard's
awhile in eve.

10º below about 9 A.M. Nice bright day but cold. We went up town awhile
in P.M. I went over to Murdock's. Marion rode home with us & Chas.
W. rode as far as Gust's. He walked on down here afterward & got here
in time for supper. Dean went home with him after they got the chores done &
spent the eve. Got a letter from Arthur today.

20 below. Dandy nice day. Warmed up & was real nice. Arthur & Loretta
were here awhile in A.M. & then Dean went hunting with Arthur & Loretta
went over to Harry's. Dean got home about 5. He got a pheasant.
Mon. Dec. 14
Not so nice in A.M. but cleared off & was quite nice in P.M. Not so cold
today. Mon & Dean hauled up wood for Geo. Brown today. Hauled it from down
on Uncle Marions up here in our yard. We got a Xmas box from Lester's
& a Xmas card from them & one from Geo. & Cecilia. We had a trial
black out tonite in Iowa. From 10 to 10:20.
Tues. Dec. 15
Snowed some in A.M. & looked like it might be a bad day but it turned off
& was real nice in P.M. The men hauled up some wood in A.M. & then we
went to Decorah with a grist about 11:30. I got my hair fixed. Chas. W. came
as we were going too eat supper & helped with the chores & then went
up town with us. Fred Walters rode up town with us. Went to the Show "So's
Your Aunt Emma". It was a good Show although not so many out. Last Show
for B.O. Ronald Wilbur, & Marvin Ward each got $5. We got a letter from
Arthur today.
Wed. Dec. 16
Not such a nice day but not too bad. Not so cold. I washed in A.M. Made cookies
& candy for Arthur in P.M. The men hauled up wood for Geo. today.
Thurs. Dec. 17
Rather a dark damp day. Tried too snow in A.M. but didn't am't too
much. Got colder in P.M. & snowed some but not much. The men finished hauling
up Geo's wood today. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. We got a
letter from Arthur & a card from Red & Bea.
Fri. Dec. 18
Nice bright day but cold. The men took Gladys & I too B.O. in P.M. &
then we went up to Club at Miriam's. I rode from B.O. with Dave T's.
& Gladys rode with Anita. Not so many out. Had Election of officers. Laura
Berg Pres., Dorothea R. V. Pres, Florence E. Sec. & Mrs. Bestuel Treas.
Had a dandy lunch. Went back up town in eve. Gladys & the kids rode up with
us. I went up to Zoa's too practice for Xmas & they went to Rev. Goodrick's.
Ole rode home with us to. "Wimpie" got home this morning for a short
leave.

Not very nice day. Started too snow about 3 P.M. & it sure snowed quite
a little. We went to Decorah about 11:30. Marion went along. Large crowd in
town. Dean got a hair cut. We got home about 5:30. Dean went over to Howards
in eve. We got a letter from Arthur.

Dandy nice day but cold. We went down to Claude's too see "Wimpie".
Mama & Dell's were there too. Had a dandy dinner. "Wimpie"
sure looks good. Weighs over 190 lbs.

Not very nice day. Tried too snow & do a little of everything. It sleeted
late in P.M. & then rained & then turned too snow. Warmer during the
day & warmer at nite. Didn't do much of anything. Got some Xmas cards
today. "Wimpie" went back too camp tonite.
Tues. Dec. 22
Everything covered with ice this morn. Not very nice day. Not so cold though.
The men cleaned the calf pen, hauled up some wood & did other odd jobs.
Wed. Dec. 23
Not so nice in A.M. but cleared off & was real nice in P.M. Quite a little
warmer. Thawed quite a little. The men cleaned the hen house in P.M. We went
up town in eve a little while. Jerry Neubauer & his dad were here late in
P.M. or rather just at dark too look at the bull.
Thurs. Dec. 24
Quite a nice day but quite a lot cooler. Jerry N. & his son came after the
bull this A.M. quite early $175.00 for him. Mon went over & got Marion about
noon & he had dinner with us & then Mon, Marion & I went to Cresco
in P.M. Got home about 4:30. Dean went with Howard down to Bluffton in P.M.
& got a Xmas tree. Dandy little tree too. Marion stayed for supper &
we went up town in eve. I went up to the M.E. church to the Xmas program &
tree. The program just got nicely started & the electric lights went out
& didn't come on again so we had the program & gifts by candle
light & flash lights. No lights in B.O. until they came over from Cresco
& fixed them down by Aunt Lissa's. They came on at 10:20. We came
home about 11. The Quandahl boys rode home with us. Got a box of stationery
from Ruth & the men got cigarettes. Got a letter from Isa. Got a Xmas card
& letter from Arthur.

Not very nice day. Not cold but raw & damp. We went down to Aunt Lissa's
for dinner. Dell's were there too. Verna was here awhile late in P.M.

Not very nice day. Not cold. It started too rain about noon & kept it up
all P.M. Some times quite hard. Dean went over to Howards in A.M. We went to
B.O. awhile in P.M. Rained hard after we got home. Got a letter from Arthur
& another from Isa.
Sun. Dec. 27
Isa's Birthday. Not such a nice day. Dark & the wind blew quite hard.
Dean was over to Howard's in A.M.
Mon. Dec. 28
Not very nice day. Rather dark. Not so cold though. The men hauled in some corn
fodder & hauled some wood up to the house in A.M. Did odd jobs in P.M. &
visited some too. Ruth walked over in P.M. Mon took her home about 4.
Tues. Dec. 29
Not very nice day. Dark & damp. Not so cold just chilly. Dean went over
to Fred's about noon & got his extension ladder & they fixed the
yard light in P.M. Mon took the ladder back late in P.M. Dean was over to Howard's
in P.M. & again in eve. We got a letter from Arthur today.
Wed. Dec. 30
Quite nice early in A.M. the sun shone for awhile but it soon clouded up &
was dark the rest of the day. We went to Decorah about 11. Mon got a hair cut
& I got my hair fixed. Got home about 5:30. Mon bumped his knee after we
got home & scared me good & plenty. Got a letter from Arthur today.
Thurs. Dec. 31
Not very nice day. Dark & damp not so cold. The men hauled in corn fodder
in A.M. Geo. Brown sawed his wood here in P.M. & then men helped him. Walt
R. was here for dinner. Dean went up town in eve. He walked up.
