Mon. Jan. 1
10º below this morn. Nice bright day but pretty cold & windy. Mon went
up too get mama about 10 A.M. & Lester's came down with him too. They
couldn't get their car started. Claude's, Dell's & Aunt
Lissa were here too. Mon took the folks back about 4. Arthur went down to Wernett's
in eve. Betty is home for a vacation.
Tues. Jan. 2
Nice bright day but cold & windy. Dean helped Howard today. Mon & Arthur
went up town in P.M. Lloyd K. was here in A.M. too see about buying the hogs.
Wed. Jan. 3
Not such a bad day but still cold. I washed & ironed. Richard was here in
A.M. & borrowed the corn sheller. Arthur went home with him too help shell
corn. He got home about 3. Mon & Dean went to B.O. in P.M. Howard was over
in eve.
Thurs. Jan. 4
10º below. Cold windy day, but bright. Mon & Dean went to B.O. in P.M.
& Arthur went down to Wernetts awhile. Pretty cold nite.
Fri. Jan. 5
Quite a nice day but cool. Billie bro't Pauline up here at noon &
Mon took us to Club at Miriam's. Gladys & Betty went too. Quite a
few out. The new officers took over office today. Had a dandy lunch. Had a "shower"
for Pauline too. She got some nice things. Arthur went down to Wernett's
in eve.
Sat. Jan. 6
Nice day. We went to Decorah about noon. Large crowd in town. I went to the
"Grand" with Ruth. "Daytime Wife". It was sure good.
We went up town awhile in eve.
Sun. Jan. 7
Quite a nice day. Leonard W. came over about noon & the boys went to Bluffton
with him. The skated most of the P.M.
Mon. Jan. 8
Nice day. I washed & ironed. The men did a little of everything. They went
to B.O. in P.M. Arthur went down to Wernetts in eve.
Tues. Jan. 9
Rather stormy at times during the day. Chilly & raw. Mon & Dean went
to B.O. in P.M. Gene & Clara McCabe & the kiddies were down for supper.
They had a euchre party at the pool hall in eve so Gene's had to go back
about 8. Mon & I rode up town with them. Mon went to Canton & I went
over to Clara's. Sonny stayed here until the boys milked & then he
& Dean drove the car up town. We got home about 11:30.
Wed. Jan. 10
Not very nice day. Cloudy & raw. Didn't do much of anything. Dean
helped Leonard B. chop wood.
Thurs. Jan. 11
Rather cloudy & not so cool until in eve the wind came up & blew hard.
Dean helped Leonard B. again today. The men went to B.O. in eve for awhile.
Fri. Jan. 12
Dandy nice day. It thawed quite a lot. Dean helped Leonard again today. Mon,
Arthur & I went to Decorah about 11:30. I got my hair fixed. They both got
a hair cut. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve to the I.O.O.F. Dance at the Hall.
Large crowd out. Had a good time. Got home about 2. The Foltz boys & Roy
[Thoen?] played. Rather cold nite.
Sat. Jan. 13
Not very bright in A.M. Started to snow about noon & snowed pretty hard
some times in P.M. Not cold though. The wind started to blow late in P.M. &
it was a regular blizzard during the nite. Mr. Rude was up in A.M. & took
the men folks for a ride in a new Chevrolet & tried too sell one. Dean helped
Leonard B. saw wood in P.M. He went with Leonard in eve & didn't get
home until morn.
Sun. Jan. 14
Regular blizzard all day. Quite cold. The snow quit blowing so bad about sun
down. The boys went to B.O. with the car in P.M. didn't have any trouble
on the south road but the north road is drifted full. Howard was here awhile
in A.M. Arthur went up to Ludwig's in eve to a party. We were all invited
but didn't think they would have it on account of the storm.
Mon. Jan. 15
Cold day but bright. Rather windy. Howard had to go too Decorah on the jury
this A.M. early so Dean helped over there most of the day with the chores. Mon
& Arthur went to B.O. in P.M. Dana Price got back to B.O. at noon today
from Honolulu for a vacation. The snow plow went thro' here about 10 A.M.
Tues. Jan. 16
Not very nice day. Cold & snowed off & on all day. Sometimes quite hard.
Snowed pretty hard early in eve but cleared off & was nice in the night
but got pretty cold. Dean helped at Howard's again today. He & Mon
went up town awhile in P.M. Dean got a hair cut. The boys went down to Christopher's
in eve to a party. Mon wouldn't go. The boys didn't get home until
about morning & we had just got to sleep good again when Jim Matthews came
& wanted Mon to help him get his car started. He had killed the engine &
couldn't start it so Mon went with our car but couldn't do anything
so they came back here.
Wed. Jan. 17
Cold day. Sun shone most of the day. Warmed up a little about noon but got pretty
cold again in P.M. Mighty cold nite. Dean helped at Howard's again today.
We sold our hogs to Lloyd K. today. Chas. W. hauled them in 2 loads.

Jim went with the men when they went with the first load. The boys went with
the car after the last load. They got home about 4.
Thurs. Jan. 18
30º below this morn. Mighty cold, windy day. The snow blew & drifted
quite a little. Dean helped at Howard's again today. Howard got thro'
at Decorah tonite. We didn't do much of anything except what chores we
had to & try & keep warm. It warmed up in the eve & was not as cold
as it was predicted to be.
Fri. Jan. 19
Cloudy day. Not as cold but still plenty chilly. Mon & the boys went over
to Howard's in A.M. & got Richard's hog. They took me to Club
at Inez W's. in P.M. & then they went on up town & spent the P.M.
Quite a few out to Club. Had a swell lunch. We had a shower for Lenora Liestikow.
Sat. Jan. 20
Brighter day but still cold. We went to Decorah about 11 A.M. Got home about
4 P.M. Quite a crowd in town. Mon & the boys went to B.O. in eve.
Sun. Jan. 21
Quite a nice day. Didn't do much of anything. We were home alone all day.
Mon. Jan. 22
Nice bright day. Not so cold. Thawed quite a little. I washed & ironed some.
The boys hauled up wood & hay & did odd jobs. Mon went to B.O. to a
meeting of the trustees.
Tues. Jan. 23
Not such a nice day. Not cold though. Everything covered with frost. The sun
shone some during the day & when it did it thawed quite a little. The men
went to B.O. in P.M. I finished the ironing. Got colder at nite.
Wed. Jan. 24
Mon's 45th Birthday. Cold day. Regular blizzard at times. Mon went to
B.O. about 10:30 & got home about 4. I patched most of the day. Howard was
here awhile late in P.M. The big snow plow went thro' here about noon
& then the trucks started hauling crushed rock & putting it on the road
from Marion's to the mail boxes.
Thurs. Jan. 25
Not such a bad day. Cold in morn & eve. Didn't do much of anything.
The boys went to B.O. in eve & then over to Mabel & played euchre. Howard
& Verna were here awhile late in P.M.
Fri. Jan. 26
Nice bright day. Pretty cold early in A.M. but warmed up some. Mon, Arthur &
I went over to Marion's about 10:30 A.M. too get him to go to Decorah
but he didn't want to go. Roscoe D. was there & he rode up to B.O.
with us. Stopped at Aunt Lissa's a minute on our way down & back.
Got to town about 11:30. I got my hair fixed. Mon got a new suit at Penny's.
He paid $15 for it. Lester Mc. rode home with us & we took him on up to
his home. Mon & I went to the I.O.O.F. dance in eve. Good sized crowd out.
Had a pretty good time. Foltz boy's played. We got home about 1:45. Pretty
cold when we came home.
Sat. Jan. 27
Quite a nice day. Warmer. Thawed some. Mon & the boys went to B.O. in P.M.
They took some oats to grind & Arthur went on to Mabel with them. They hauled
crushed rock past here today. Started putting it on up at Merle's corner.
Sun. Jan. 28
Nice bright day. Didn't do much of anything. Dean went over to Howard's
in A.M. & up to Ludwig's in P.M. Leonard W. was here a few minutes
in P.M.
Mon. Jan. 29
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men went to B.O. in P.M. They hauled
crushed rock past here today.
Tues. Jan. 30
Cloudy, gloomy day. Mon took me down to Aunt Lissa's in P.M. & then
he went up town until about 4:30 he came after me. We all went to Decorah in
eve to a show at the Lyric. "Slightly Honorable". It wasn't
too bad. We got home about 11:30. The boys cut cord wood awhile today. They
hauled crushed rock on our road today. Got past here about 6:30 P.M.
Wed. Jan. 31
Rather cloudy day, but quite warm. Thawed quite a little. Mon took me to B.O.
about 10 A.M. The M.E.L.A.S. had an oyster dinner at the church parlors &
Elsie, Miriam & I cooked oysters. Not such a large crowd. They sure had
a swell dinner. We got home about 3. The boys cleaned out the hen house &
then hauled out manure from the calf pen. Mon went to B.O. in eve to a euchre
party. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Thurs. Feb. 1
Quite a nice day. Rather warm in A.M. & until after dinner it started too
cool off & got quite a lot colder. Thawed quite a little in A.M. Mary Leonhart's
house burned in A.M. & the men were down there until after 12. They went
down to Wilhelm's in P.M. & to Marion's. The boys went to B.O.
in eve. Clyde Q. was here for dinner & Howard W. was here in P.M.
Fri. Feb. 2
Quite a nice day. Mon took me to B.O. in P.M. & then I went on up to Club
at Margaret Ward's with Inez W. Quite a few out & we had a dandy lunch.
The boys hauled up some hay in P.M.
Sat. Feb. 3
Quite a nice day. Clouded up late in P.M. & started too snow about 5 &
kept it up the rest of the nite I guess. We got up early as Mon had to be in
B.O. at 8 A.M. for a special election about the fire truck from Canton. Arthur
took him up town. The boys & I went to Decorah about 11 A.M. We went to
B.O. first & I voted. Took mama along to Decorah. Large crowd in town. We
got home about 2:30. The boys went up town in eve. Mon came home with them.
Sun. Feb. 4
Snowed off & on all day. Light damp snow. Sun shone a little. Mon, Arthur
& I went up to Red's about 10 A.M. & were there a couple of hrs.
Mon bought some posts of Red. Jim Matthews & Ole were there too. We went
over to Percy Wards from there but there was no one home.
Mon. Feb. 5
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. to a meeting of the
Trustees & didn't come home until morning. They had a farewell party
for Dana in eve I guess. Richard B. was here awhile in eve.
Tues. Feb. 6
Cold, dreary day. Tried to snow some. Dana & Bertha Mc. were here awhile
early in A.M. He came to bid us good bye as he is starting back to Honolulu
at 1 P.M. today. We went down to Roy Halse's sale about 11 A.M. The M.E.L.A.S.
served the lunch & they sure served a lot. I helped. Very large crowd. We
came home about 2:30. Dave rode home with us. We went to B.O. on our way home.
The boys went over to Dawley's in eve. Arthur W. came too see the boys
after they were gone.
Wed. Feb. 7
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Mon & I went down to Sam Cassel's
in A.M. Dave went with us. We stopped at Bluffton a few minutes on our way home.
Mon & the boys went over to Percy Ward's right after dinner &
bought a stock hog. Percy bro't him over here for them. The boys cut cord
wood in A.M. & in P.M. after they got home from Percy's. We went over
to Howard's in eve & had ice cream. Ede & Arthur W. were there
too. Snowed in the nite. They started hauling gravel past here in eve to put
on the road past Newhouses.
Thurs. Feb. 8
My 48th Birthday. Nice bright day. Thawed some. The wind blew quite hard all
day. Drifted quite a little. The boys hauled up some wood for the house in A.M.
& cut wood in P.M. Mon went to B.O. awhile in P.M. They hauled gravel past
here today. Got a letter from Cecilia today.
Fri. Feb. 9
Nice day only rather cool. We went to Decorah about 11 A.M. & got home about
3:30. Large crowd in town. I got my hair fixed & Arthur & Mon got hair
cuts. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve to the I.O.O.F. dance at the Hall. Good
crowd out. Leap Year dance. We came home about 12:30. Joe Louis & Arturo
Godoy fought tonite. 15 rounds & Joe won.
Sat. Feb. 10
Rather frosty & foggy in A.M. early but cleared off & was a grand day.
Thawed quite a little. We didn't do much of anything. Howard was here
awhile about noon. Arthur Walter's & Loretta Beckman were married
this P.M. & they had a dance for them in Abbie's house (which Fred
has bo't). Large crowd out. Had a good time. We got home about 3:15. Had
a little calf tonite. Mrs. Ottaway passed away late this P.M.
Sun. Feb. 11
Dandy nice warm day. Thawed a lot. Mon took me down to Mart L's. in P.M.
to exchange coats. I got Kate's by mistake last night. Visited a few minutes.
Mary L. was there too. Wind blew pretty hard in the nite.
Mon. Feb. 12
Nice day. Wind blew pretty hard in A.M. but let up some in P.M. Mon & the
boys went to B.O. awhile in P.M. Howard was here awhile in A.M. & Verna
awhile after school.
Tues. Feb. 13
Nice day but cool. The boys cleaned the hen house in A.M. & worked in the
woods in P.M. Mon & I went to B.O. about 1 to Mrs. Ottaways funeral at the
M.E. church. Mrs. Krumm & I sang Zoa played. We sang "Some Day the
Silver Chord Will Break", "The Old Rugged Cross" & "Rock
of Ages". Not such a large crowd out.
Wed. Feb. 14
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The boys worked in the woods in P.M.
Howard's were over in eve. We had ice cream.
Thurs. Feb. 15
Nice bright day. The wind blew quite hard & it was pretty cool but it sure
thawed a lot. The boys worked in the woods in A.M. & P.M. Mon went to Mabel
in A.M. with Howard. He took me over to Glen Reeds a little after 12. They had
a Sale & the Club served lunch. Not many out & we didn't make
much. We went up town in eve. Arthur went to Lodge. Mon played in the euchre
tournament. I went over to Clara's. We got home about 12.
Fri. Feb. 16
Rather rainy, misty day. Chilly too. We went over & got Marion about 11
A.M. & went to Decorah. Quite a crowd in town. We got home about 4:30. There
had been a bad accident at the Marlow corner just before we came home &
we stopped & looked at the car. Stopped at Aunt Lissa's going &
coming too. Arthur went to B.O. in eve & Dean went over to Howard's.
Sat. Feb. 17
Cloudy dark day. Snowed quite a little. Came down so soft & nice. The men
went to B.O. awhile in P.M.
Sun. Feb. 18
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Didn't do much of anything. Howard was here
awhile in P.M.
Mon. Feb. 19
Cloudy dark day. Didn't do much. Arthur went to B.O. about 6:30 P.M. &
went to Waukon on to Lodge. Quite a few went from B.O. They put on the first
degree. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Harry Q. was here in P.M. Arthur
helped Dave's haul corn from Erlin's down to their place. Arlan
Falck hauled it in his truck. They got thro' about 2.
Tues. Feb. 20
Another cloudy day. Mon took me down to Aunt Lissa's right after dinner
& then he went up town. I helped quilt a quilt mama has made for me. We
came home about 5. Howard was here awhile. The boys worked in the woods in P.M.
Mon went to Mabel in eve to a euchre tournament.
Wed. Feb. 21
Not very nice day. Didn't do too much. Not so cold in the day time but
got cold at nite.
Thurs. Feb. 22
Dandy nice day but rather cool. I washed & ironed. Mon, the boys & Howard
went to Spring Grove about 11 A.M. to an Oliver Tractor day. They didn't
get home until about 6 P.M. They sure had a good time they said. Started to
snow in the nite & snowed quite a little.
Fri. Feb. 23
Not very cold day until in the eve. The wind came up & it got quite a lot
cold. Snowed all day & into the nite. We went to Decorah about 11 &
got home about 3. I got my hair fixed. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Snow drifted in the nite.
Sat. Feb. 24
5º below this A.M. Nice bright day but cold & windy. Snowed drifted
some all day. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. The boys went to B.O. in eve.
Sun. Feb. 25
Around 20º below this A.M. Dandy nice day. Warmed up quite a lot &
thawed some. The men had a hard time getting the pumping engine started. They
worked at it until after 11 & then Mon had too go to B.O. & get some
batteries. He took me down to Aunt Lissa's as he went. He & the boys
came down for dinner when they finished up their chores. We had dinner about
2. Dell's & Lester's were there too. Had a good dinner. We came
home about 4:30. The snow plow went past here about 11 P.M.
Mon. Feb. 26
Not very nice day. Cloudy & dark. The sun shone a little in P.M. It wasn't
so cold though. Happy L. was here quite a while in P.M.
Tues. Feb. 27
Cloudy day again. Sun shone some in P.M. The boys cleaned the hen house in A.M.
Mon & Dean went to B.O. in P.M. & I went up to Seelye's. A bunch
of the Club girls & some of the other women of the community had a farewell
party for Alice & Mrs. S. We all took lunch. Sure had a dandy lunch.
Wed. Feb. 28
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. & the boys went
horse back riding.
Thurs. Feb. 29
Not very nice day. Not cold but dark & damp. Joe Kuhn came about 9:30 A.M.
& ground feed. The boys hauled up wood & hay the rest of A.M. Mon, Arthur
& I went to Cresco in P.M. Mon & Arthur had their eyes tested at Dr.
Jinderlee's. Mon has to have glasses. Dean cleaned the calf pen while
we were gone. The men went to B.O. in eve. Euchre party. Fritz went along too.
Dean got a hair cut. Erlin Stortz moved over on the Broghammer place today.
Fri. Mar. 1
Dark day again & still it thawed. Mon took me to B.O. in P.M. to Club at
Agnes. Quite a crowd out & we sure had a nice lunch. We got home about 5.
Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve to the Dance. Mon was on the supper com.
so we had to get supper. Otto & Ida helped also Willard & Gladys just
at supper time. We got home at 1:30. Roy & Bernice Halse moved over on Dave's
place today. They bought part of it. We had twin calves tonite, but one of them
was dead.
Sat. Mar. 2
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was real nice in P.M. The
wind was cool but it thawed a lot. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah in A.M.
Ida went along too. Very large crowd in town. Just about like Xmas. We went
to B.O. on our way home & stopped there a few minutes. Mrs. Seelye, Philip
& Alice moved to Decorah today. Jim Headington bought that place & is
moving there.
Sun. Mar. 3
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah to the Show
in P.M. "Village Barn Dance" with "Lullabelle & Scotty".
It was sure funny. Dean went over to Howard's. Brayton W. was here awhile
in eve. Little son born to Pauline & Billie Lange today. Benjamin Davis
Lange.
Mon. Mar. 4
Rather cloudy damp day. Didn't do much of anything.
Tues. Mar. 5
Cloudy damp day again. Thawed quite a bit. Mon went to B.O. in A.M. too get
the pumping engine fixed & to Decorah in P.M. The trustees met with the
Supervisors. He didn't get home until in the nite. Little son born to
Pearl & Howard early this A.M. but he was not O.K. Dean & I went over
there about 8:30 A.M. Dean helped with the chores & I in the house. Grace
B. is there. The minister came down & baptized the baby. Fred & Loretta
W. were sponsers. They named him Leonard Fredrick. Fred, Ede, Loretta &
Howard took him to Rochester about 10 A.M. I spent most of the day over there
& then Dean & I went back in eve, too see what word Howard bro't
back. There is only a chance of the baby pulling thro'. They operated
on him as soon as they got him up there.
Wed. Mar. 6
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. I washed & ironed. Went over to Pearl's
awhile in P.M. Arthur chopped wood in A.M. & both of the boys chopped in
P.M. We got a letter from Warren today & he sent a picture of Jon Robert.
He is sure a cute boy.
Thurs. Mar. 7
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. &
helped him butcher. They went to B.O. in P.M. so he didn't get home until
after 5. The boys chopped wood. Howard went to Rochester today & got home
about 4 P.M. I went over there awhile after he got home. The baby is as well
as can be expected. Ruth & Francis came a little after 5 & stayed for
supper. Arthur & Francis went up to Lodge & the rest of us went up after
9. We stayed at Gene's pool hall. Not many there. Had a lot of laughs.
Got home about 12.
Fri. Mar. 8
Nice day again. Snowed melted a lot & the road dried up a lot too. The boys
chopped wood in A.M. & helped Harry saw wood in P.M. Mon & I went over
& got Marion about 11 & went to Decorah. Took Marion's meat down
to have it cured. Quite a crowd in town. Got home about 4. Went over to Howard's
a few minutes after we got home. Mon took me down to the Hospital too see Pauline
L. & her baby. He is sure nice.
Sat. Mar. 9
Nice day only not as bright as yesterday. Thawed a lot. Didn't do much
of anything.
Sun. Mar. 10
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a lot. I went over to Pearl's in P.M. Arthur
went fishing but didn't get anything. Dean went down to Pine Creek in
P.M.
Mon. Mar. 11
Not such a nice day. Cloudy & windy. Mighty windy late in P.M. & nite.
Mon, Arthur & I went to school election in P.M. They put "Happy"
back in again as director. Dean came up to Ludwigs & we all went to B.O.
awhile after election.
Tues. Mar. 12
Snowed off & on all day & in the eve it started to snow hard & drift
& it snowed all nite. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah about 10:30 &
got home about 2. I went over to Pearl's awhile in P.M. We went to B.O.
in eve expecting to practice but not enough came out. We came home about 9:30
& it sure was snowing when we came home.
Wed. Mar. 13
Snowed most of the day & drifted. Not cold though. Got colder at nite though.
Didn't do much of anything. Howard was over awhile in P.M. Got colder
in nite.
Thurs. Mar. 14
Quite a lot colder & a regular blizzard. Snowed quite hard at times. The
men went to B.O. in P.M. Lots of snow. I went over to Pearl's. She is
up today for the first. Howard was over here awhile in A.M. The wind went down
at sundown. The snow plow came thro' here about 11 P.M.
Fri. Mar. 15
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men did a little of everything. Mon
Dean & I went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Quite a crowd out. Had a good
time. We got supper again. Otto, Ida & Dorothy Rolfe's helped. We
got home about 2. Pretty cold nite.
Sat. Mar. 16
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. It thawed a lot. We went to Decorah in A.M. Arthur
got his hair cut. We got home about 4. I went over to Pearl's awhile after
we got home. Grace has gone home so Pearl is alone. We went to B.O. in eve.
Arthur & I went up to the Hall to practice. Most of them were there so we
read it all over. The I.O.O.F. are putting on a play & we are both in it.
We got home about 11. Marion rode home with us.
Sun. Mar. 17
Very nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & looked quite stormy but didn't
storm. Roy Wernett & Howard were here in P.M. It thawed a lot today. Much
cooler tonite. Little daughter born to Mr. & Mrs. Erlin Stortz.
Mon. Mar. 18
Rather cold in A.M. early but warmed up & was a dandy day. Quite windy though.
Snow sure went today. The boys hauled up hay & wood & hauled out manure.
Arthur went to B.O. in eve to practice. Dean went over to Howard's. Happy,
Dave & Fritz met here in eve for their school meeting. Marion came along
with Happy. Lizzie & Maxine came over about 8:30 after Dave but he wasn't
ready until after 10. The rest didn't go until after 11. Howard, Pearl,
Arthur & Loretta went to Rochester today too see the baby. He is coming
just fine.
Tues. Mar. 19
Dandy nice day until about 3 P.M. it clouded up & started a light snow.
Snowed off & on until about 6 & did it ever snow then & a regular
blizzard for a little while. Snowed off & on again during the nite. The
wind piled up the snow some. I washed & ironed. The boys cut wood. Mon went
to B.O. in P.M. & didn't get home until after 8. Howard was here in
A.M.
Wed. Mar. 20
Dandy nice day but a little cooler. Thawed a lot though. Arthur & I went
to Mabel in A.M. Dean went as far as B.O. We took some oats over & had them

Rather a cold day but bright. Windy. Didn't do much of anything. John
Loftsgaarden was here for dinner. Mon & Dean went to B.O. a few minutes
in P.M. & got my teeth. We went to B.O. in eve. Mon & Arthur went to
Lodge. We practiced in the lower hall after Lodge. Some of the Harmony Odd Fellows
were down & played whist. They had supper. We got home about 11.

About 5º below this A.M. Cold wind day but the sun shone. We went to Decorah
in P.M. They took the car down to Bradleys & had them wash up the lower
part of the car. Trying to get the brakes thawed out. But the didn't do
a very good job. Cold nite.
Sat. Mar. 23
About 5º below this A.M. Nice bright day but cold & windy. Mon &
I went over & got Howard & Pearl about 9 A.M. & started for Rochester.
We stopped at Roy's & had him thaw out the brakes so it was about
9:40 when we left there. We got up to Rochester a little after 11. We went into
the Hospital where the baby is & Howard & Pearl saw him & saw the
Dr. but we couldn't bring him home. We went down town & had lunch
& looked around the Kresge's store the while (Bought some gold fish.)
went back up to the clinic & then we came home. Stopped in B.O. a minute
on our way home. Got home about 4. Cold nite.

Nice bright day but mighty cold & windy. Mon took me up to church. Quite
a few out.

Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men did odd jobs. Dean went over
to Howards about 4 P.M. & did his chores. Howard, Pearl, & Fred went
to Rochester in P.M. & got the baby. I went over in eve too see him. He
sure looks good.
Tues. Mar. 26
Snowed all day & sometimes mighty hard. Not cold though. We went to B.O.
in P.M. & then Arthur & I went on over to Mabel, too see Dr. Nass. Arthur
has a small spot of calf itch on his neck & Dr. treated it. Chas. Wernett
was here in eve.
Wed. Mar. 27
Somewhat colder although it warmed up a lot & settled a lot of the snow.
Sun shone some off & on during the day. I went over to Pearl's awhile
in P.M. Baby is just fine. We went up town in eve. Dean stayed home. Arthur
& I went to practice at the hall. Mon took Red home & Arthur & I
rode home with Ronald & Ruth. Got home about 11.
Thurs. Mar. 28
Not very nice day. Misty, damp & cold. We went to Decorah about 12 &
got back about 4:30. I got my hair fixed. Little son born to Elmer & Esther
Gilbertson.
Fri. Mar. 29
Not very nice in A.M. Rained some & a regular blizzard for a little while,
but cleared off in P.M. & was just fine. Wind blew pretty hard. Dried up
quite a little. Mon & Dean took me to Club at Gladys' A's in
P.M. & then they went on to town. Only 11 out to Club. We had a swell lunch.
I rode back out to the road with Albert E. & waited at Richards until the
folks came. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve. We practiced early &
then went to the dance. Quite a crowd out. Had a good time. Got home about 2.
Ed D. rode as far as the mail boxes with us. Some great Northern Lights tonite.
All over the sky & so bright. Joe Louis & Johnny Paychek fight. Only
went a round & a half. Louis won.

Arthur's 23rd Birthday. Dandy nice day. Quite warm. The ground settled
a lot today. I went over to Pearl's awhile in P.M. Kate L. & Gladys
B. were there too. Arthur went out tonite.

Dandy nice day. We went down to Claude's & spent the day. Had a good
visit. Mama was there too. Leonard's 22nd Birthday.
Mon. Apr. 1
Dandy nice day. Dried up a lot. Mon had too go to B.O. about 10 A.M. to a meeting
of the trustees & didn't get home until about 6. I washed & ironed.
The boys cut wood. Harry Q. was here awhile about noon. Charley & Mrs. W.
were here in eve. Had a pretty hard storm in the nite. Lots of thunder, lightning,
wind, & some mighty big hail stones. Lasted quite a little while. Didn't
rain much though. The maintainer went over our road today.
Tues. Apr. 2
Quite a nice day only pretty windy. Dried up a lot. Charley & Roy W. came
up & got a couple of hogs in A.M. & took them down to their place &
butchered them. They bro't them back about 4. The boys worked in the woods
in A.M. & did odd jobs in P.M. Joe Kuhn ground feed here in P.M. I went
over to Pearl's awhile in eve. Arthur & I were going up to the school
house in eve to the Declamatory Contest but quite a storm came up & we didn't
go. Quite a lot of thunder, lightning, wind & rain.
Wed. Apr. 3
Not very nice day. Misty & rainy most of A.M. but the wind got around in
the west about noon & it quit raining but was still dark & windy. Some
cooler. Mon took the hogs to Decorah early in A.M. He waited until they got
them cut up at Holmberg & Erickson's & then he bro't the
lard home. He got home just as we were eating dinner. Howard was here two or
3 times today.

Not very nice day. Rather damp. The boys peeled posts in A.M. awhile. Mon &
Dean helped me cut up & grind up lard. I tried out lard in P.M. It snowed
pretty hard for a few minutes in eve. Dean helped Fred W. saw wood in P.M.
Fri. Apr. 5
Dandy nice day. It dried up a lot. I finished trying out lard & cleaned
up the house some. The boys peeled posts in A.M. & cut wood in P.M. Mon
peeled posts in P.M. Mon, Arthur & I went to B.O. in eve. Arthur & I
went to practice at the Hall. Not all of them out. We got home about 11. Howard
was here awhile in eve.

Dandy nice day. We went to Decorah about 11 A.M. & got home about 5. Large
crowd in town. I run around with Ruth P. all day. Mon & Dean went to B.O.
in eve. Howard was over in A.M. & got the fanning mill. He was over awhile
in eve.

Nasty cold day. Rained almost all day. Although it was a nice rain. Every bit
went into the ground. Didn't do much of anything. I didn't feel
very well.

Not so nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Wind blew hard &
it dried up quite a little. Mon & Arthur cleaned the hen house in A.M. &
the boys hauled out manure in P.M. Mon went over to Marion's awhile in
P.M. We went up town in eve. Marion went with us from Ludwig's & then
we took him home. Arthur & I went to practice. Dean got a hair cut. We got
home about 10:30. Got a letter from Cecilia & George today.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. I washed in A.M. & ironed a little in P.M. Charley
& Mrs. W. & Ruthie came in A.M. after eggs & were here for dinner.
I went over to Pearl's awhile in P.M. The boys cut wood in A.M. &
hauled up posts in P.M. Mon went fishing in P.M. & got a few. Lester &
Isa were down & spent the eve.

Not very nice day. Rained all day. Sometimes quite hard. Didn't do much
of anything. Got pretty cold in the nite.

18º above this A.M. Mighty cold windy day. Sun shone. We went over &
got Marion about 10:30 & went to Decorah. Quite a crowd in town. I got my
hair fixed. Also got a spring coat at Connor & Knight's. $14.95. We
got home about 5. We went to B.O. in eve. Arthur & I went to practice at
the Hall. Harry Van Vleit flunked out & Vern Porter came tonite too take
his place.

Bright sun shiny day but cool & windy. Gladys came down after me about 1
& I went to Club with her at Fern's. Dorothy, Elsie & Inez went
too. Large crowd out. Had a swell lunch. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve
to the dance. Not such a large crowd out. Leonard Gossman & Ward Wilford's
played. We got home about 2. Coldest weather on record for this time of the
year over most of Iowa, yesterday & today.

Dandy nice day. Warmer. Mon & I took Howard & Pearl & the baby to
Mabel in P.M. too see Dr. Lannin. Dean went fishing but didn't get any
fish.

Dandy nice day. The boys went down to Roscoe & Tom D's in A.M. Arthur
& I went to Decorah to the Show in P.M. "Grapes of Wrath". It
was some show. Dean went fishing but no luck. We set a hen today.

Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Went over to Pearl's awhile in
P.M. Arthur dragged corn stalks in A.M. & started plowing here by the house
in P.M. Mon went over to Marion's a few minutes in A.M. & then he
raked yard. He took the car up town in P.M. for Roy to overhaul it but Roy was
too busy so Mon came home & raked yard & did odd jobs. Dean grubbed
out plum trees & helped at the yard. He plowed awhile in P.M. Arthur &
I went to B.O. in eve to practice. Got home about 10:40.

Dandy nice day. Dean plowed all day. Mon & Arthur left here about 7 A.M.
Arthur went to work for Arland Falck on his lime crusher & trucking lime
& Mon took the car up for Roy to overhaul it. Gene McCabe bro't him
home at noon. Arland bro't Arthur home about 8 P.M.

Sprinkled a little early in A.M. & then started in raining about noon &
kept it up all P.M. Snowed some too. Pretty cool day. Arthur went to work about
8. Rode with Wimpie & Arland bro't him home about 6. Dean plowed in
A.M. Otto K. was here just after dinner on the R.E.A. & Mon went with him
when he went. They went to Bluffton, Cresco, & Decorah. Otto bro't
him home about 5. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Dandy nice day. Dean plowed all day. Arthur went with Maxine in A.M. when she
went too school & met Arland at the 4 corners & then on to work. He
didn't come home for supper. Mon walked to B.O. in P.M. & got the
car. We went up town in eve. Went to practice. Got home about 11.

Mama's 69th Birthday. Dandy nice day. Arthur drove the car to work today.

Dandy nice day. Dean dragged & disced in A.M. Mon took Arthur to his work
early this A.M. Mon went over to Marion's about 9 A.M. & got some
potatoes. Marion came home with him. We went to Decorah about 12:30. Not such
a large crowd in town. I got a new hat & Dean got a pair of pants, shirt,
& some other things. We came home past the crusher but they had quit work
early & Arlan had bro't Arthur home. Marion came home to supper with
us. The men went to B.O. in eve. Arthur went to Decorah & got his hair cut.
Jessie Dawley & Cecilia Baker were married today.

Cloudy, cool day. I went over to Pearl's in A.M. & helped her fix
up the baby's tummy. Dr. Lannin put a piece of tin on & we had to
put that back. Some job. We went down to Aunt Lissa's for dinner. Claude's,
Lester's & Dell's were there too. Had a good dinner. Got home
about 5:30. Just been home a little while when Betty & Verna Wernett came.
They just got here from Chicago. Drove their car out. Betty & Roy came up
in eve & Arthur went with them. Dean went over to Howard's awhile
in eve.

Not such a nice day. Cloudy & cooler. Sun shone a little. Arthur worked
for Arlan. Mon & Dean went over to Harry Q's. in A.M. early &
got the fanning mill. Dean started seeding about 10 A.M. Mon & I cleaned
grain awhile in A.M. & again in P.M. We went up town in eve. I went to practice.
Arthur went with Betty. Little son born to Doris & Richard B. in A.M. early.

Not very nice day. Sprinkled off & on all A.M. & rained all of P.M.
Just a gentle rain. Dean sowed grain in A.M. & Mon & Arthur cleaned
grain & did odd jobs.

Dandy nice day but cool. Ground covered with frost this A.M. I washed &
ironed. Arthur dragged in A.M. & Dean disced in P.M. Mon went over to Marions
a few minutes early in A.M. He & Arthur went to B.O. after dinner &
got some nursery stock & they set that out in P.M. The boys went to a chiravari
on Mr. & Mrs. Jessie Dawley in eve.

Not such a nice day. Cool & windy. Dean finished discing that piece early
in A.M. & then dragged it & got it seeded today. Mon & Arthur did
odd jobs in A.M. Mon, Arthur & I went to B.O. in eve. Arthur & I went
to practice. Didn't get home until after 11. Cold nite. Mon, Arthur &
I went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed. Mon got grass seed. We stopped
at Claude's on our way home & got his grass seeder. Mon went back
to her own home this P.M.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked for Arland today. Mon dragged & Dean run the
grass seeder. They finished up in P.M. I went to Club at Florence Baker's
in P.M. with Dorothea Reid & rode back with Gladys A. Not such a large crowd
out. Had a dandy lunch. Bill Leonhart bought Roy Wanless' old house &
they moved it today with one of the county cats. Hughes from Frankville did
the job & Francis P. helped. He got back along here just as we finished
supper so he ate supper here. Arland was here awhile too. Robert Wicks was here
when I got home from Club. Census man.

Dandy nice day. Mon went over to Marions in A.M. & Marion came over here
for dinner & we went to Decorah in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went up town.
Dean & I went up to Mama's. Dean didn't stay long. Played with
Jerome awhile. Olive & Marvin came up there too. We went down town about
9:30. We got home about 10:30. Arthur disced up the old road in A.M.

Nice day but mighty windy. Didn't do much of anything. Dean went fishing
but didn't get anything. Started to rain about 7 P.M. & kept it up
the rest of the nite I guess. Nice easy rain.

Raining when we got up & kept it up until about 8:30 A.M. & then it
cleared up for a while but got to raining again about 10 & kept it up off
& on all day. Rained pretty hard at times too. Some thunder & lightning
in P.M. Real warm in A.M. but got colder about 2 & was real cold at nite.
Mon & I took Pearl, Howard & the baby to Rochester. Left there about
9 A.M. & got back some after 5. The Dr.s thought the baby had grown a lot
& was getting along pretty good. We went up town in eve. Arthur & I
went to practice. Got home about 11.

Cloudy, windy, cold day. Mon took Arthur to work early in A.M. & then went
on to Prosper & got the fence for the yard. He & Dean worked at that
after he got home. I went over to Pearl's awhile in P.M. Arland bro't

Snowed some in P.M. Cloudy, cold & terribly windy day. Arthur drove the
car to work today. We didn't do much of anything here. Mon & Dean
fixed the horse barn some in P.M. Arthur, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve to
practice. Got home about 11. Mighty cold, windy nite. Froze quite hard tonite.

Arthur worked for Arland. I washed & ironed. Dean went over & got Dave's
rake & raked up corn stalks & Mon burned them. Dean went over to Howard's
awhile in eve.

Nice bright day but the wind was cool. Arthur rode to work & back with Darwin
Christopher. Dean finished the raking & then started discing in A.M. Mon
went over to Marion's in A.M. & Marion came home with him to dinner.
Mon, Marion & I went to Decorah in P.M. Lizzie C. rode down with us. Marion
came home to supper with us & then the men folks all went to B.O. in eve.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. We went up & got mama about 10 A.M. & went
down & spent the day at Padden's. One of their neighbors was taken
sick just after dinner & Ruth & Francis were over there most of the
P.M. Larry Keefe was at Ruth's too. Mama came home with us while we did
chores & then Arthur took her home & then we went to practice. Got home
about 10:30. The old hen hatched today & every egg hatched. 13 little chickens.

Quite a nice day but pretty windy. Arthur worked for Arland. Dean finished discing
in P.M. & started plowing. Audry, Harold & Delores were over in eve.
Audry got some eggs too set. Alice A. came down in eve & made out her teacher
contract for next year. Clouded up in eve & rained in the nite.
Tues. May 7
Rainy most of A.M. Sprinkled some in P.M. too. Cool. Mon & the boys went
to B.O. in A.M. & got the plow wheel fixed. Dean plowed in P.M. Mon &
Arthur worked at the fence around the yard. I raked some & cleaned up junk
out of the east part of the yard. We went up town in eve. Practiced. Got home
about 11. Rained some in eve.
Wed. May 8
Quite a nice day. Pretty warm. Mon took Arthur to work this A.M. early. Dean
plowed all day. Mon & I left home at 12 & went to B.O. & got mama
& Isa & went to Decorah. We all got permanents. I got mine at Mabel's
& mama & Isa at Alice's. We came home by the rock crusher &
bro't Arthur home. Got home about 6:30. Dean had the chores most all done.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked for Arland. Dean plowed. Mon did odd jobs. I washed
& ironed. I went over to Pearl's a few minutes in P.M. Verna &
Darlene came home with me too see the little chickens. Arthur & I went to
practice in eve. Got home about 11. Rained some in the nite.
Fri. May 10
Nice day but rather cool. Arthur worked for Arland until noon. Dean finished
plowing & started discing. We did chores early & got up town about 6:45.
We had our play tonite. Closed Lipo. Ruth Webb, Joyce Smith, Alice Albertson,
Betty Palmer, Ronald Webb, Vern Porter, Otto Koenig, Brayton Whitney, Arthur
& I in it. Very large crowd. Couldn't all get in the hall. Manford
W. sold tickets & Dean took them. Took in $58.78. Had ice cream & cake
after it was over. Got home about 11.
Sat. May 11
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Arthur worked in A.M. but they quit at noon. Dean
disced. The Club had their Mothers day doings at the Lutheran parlors in P.M.
Quite a few out. Had a nice program & lunch. I rode to B.O. with Maxine
& then Mon came after me. We went to Decorah in eve. Took the eggs down
& did some trading. Very large crowd in town. We stopped at Breezy Hill
on our way home to a shower for Mr. & Mrs. Jessie Dawley. Quite a crowd
out. We got home about 1.

Dandy nice day. Pretty warm & windy. We went up home & spent the day.
Claude's & Lester's were there too. Arthur & Leonard went
to the show in P.M. Aunt Lissa, Neva, Raymond & the baby were there a minute
in P.M.

Dandy nice day. Arthur didn't have to work today. Dean dragged. Arthur
helped awhile in P.M. Mon went over to Marion's in P.M. but he wasn't
home. Got some potatoes. We did up the chores early & went to B.O. Gave
the Play again tonite at B.O. Not such a large crowd. Took in $7.50. Had candy
bars after the play. We got home about 11.
Tues. May 14
Not such a nice day. Sun didn't shine & it got pretty cool & windy
in P.M. Arthur worked today. Dean finished dragging about 8 & Mon started
planting corn. Cold nite. We had 8 little pigs this P.M.
Wed. May 15
Sprinkled off & on all A.M. & pretty cold & windy. Didn't
do much of anything. Howard was here awhile in A.M. We went to B.O. after dinner
& then Arthur, mama & I went to Decorah. Arthur got his hair cut. Mama
got a couple of new dresses & she got me one too. We went to the greenhouse
on our way home & mama got a rose bush & hydrangea. Dean went over to
Howards in eve. Another sow had 12 pigs this P.M.
Thurs. May 16
Nice day. Some warmer. Arthur worked for Arland. Mon finished planting that
piece of corn tonite. Howard was over in eve. Had 7 little pigs today.
Fri. May 17
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. Arland hauled lime here in A.M. The boys helped
him & Mon dragged on the piece they put lime on. (The north piece next to
Harry.) They got back with a load about 11:30 & then we all went down to
Maxine's last day of school. Quite a crowd there. Had a good dinner. She
gave us all ice cream cones after dinner. We got home about 3 & the boys
unloaded the load of lime & then Arthur went to B.O. with Arland & helped
him work on the truck. Dean finished dragging after we got home. Mon & I
went up in the woods hunting sows. Had 9 little pigs tonite.
Sat. May 18
Not so bad in A.M. but rained most of P.M. & nite. Sometimes real hard.
Dean dragged in A.M. Mon & Arthur went to B.O. in A.M. & Arland was
up there so they went & got our last load of lime. Arland was here for dinner.
Arland & Arthur hauled one load of lime to Roy Halse's in P.M. Mon
went to B.O. & got our car. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah in eve.
We went to the Show "Road to Singapore". Bing Crosby & Bob Hope
with Dorothy Lamour. It was sure good. Got home about 12.
Sun. May 19
Nice in A.M. but it sure did rain in P.M. Cleared off nice in eve though. Mon
went over to Marion's in A.M. but he wasn't home so he stopped at
Fritz's awhile. Didn't do much of anything but read.
Mon. May 20
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Arthur worked for Arland. Mon made gates
for the house yard. Dean dragged the corn field in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve.
I went up to mama's. Got some rose bushes & other plants too set out.
Tues. May 21
Dandy nice spring day. Dean finished dragging the corn field about 9:30 &
went down on the other field to disc. Arland came along with another load of
lime for Roy about 10 A.M. & Arthur went with him. Arland bro't Arthur
back at nite & stayed for supper. I set out plants in A.M. & planted
some flower seeds in P.M. Mon & I went over to Marions about 3 P.M. &
then he went to B.O. with us. I went over to Isa's awhile. Verna &
Darlene were here awhile in A.M.
Wed. May 22
Dandy nice day but rather windy. Dean disced & dragged in A.M. We went up
to the school house at noon to their last day of school picnic. Quite a few
out. Had a dandy dinner. We got home about 3 & Dean went back to dragging.
Arthur went fishing. Got a few. Tom D. was here awhile in eve.
Thurs. May 23
Dandy nice day. Arthur helped Arland in A.M. & then went down on Peterson's
creek fishing in P.M. He got home about 4:30. Had over 40 little fellows. Dean
helped Tom D. shear sheep. Mon finished planting corn. Arland & Maxine were
here in eve awhile. After they went the boys went up town. Dean got his hair
cut.
Fri. May 24
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up at noon & rained real hard & hailed
quite a little too. Looked rainy the rest of the P.M. Dean helped Tom in A.M.
but it rained so they couldn't work in P.M. Arthur went to work at noon
but it rained hard where he was about 4 P.M. so he had too quit. Arthur disced
in A.M. & Dean some in P.M. I went to Club at Hazel B's. with Dorothy
S. Not so many out but we had a good time & a swell lunch. Maude J. rode
down with us but not back.

Dandy nice day. Dean finished discing the bean ground in A.M. Mon & Arthur
went over to Marion's in A.M. & then he came home to dinner with them.
We all went to Decorah in P.M. but Arthur, he stayed at home & disced the
garden & did other things. Quite a crowd in town. I got my hair fixed. The
men went to B.O. in eve.
Sun. May 26
Nice bright day but cold & windy. Clifford D. came early in A.M. & Arthur
went with him (He has a new car) & didn't get back until about 5.
Dean was over to Howard's in A.M. & down on the creek in P.M. Otto
K. came just as we were going to eat breakfast & wanted Mon to go to Bluffton
so he did as soon as he finished eating. He didn't get back until about
10:30 & then he took me to B.O. to church. Bishop Lee was there & spoke.
Very large crowd out. Was very glad too see him & to get to speak with him.
Mon. May 27
Looked rainy all day. Did sprinkle a few times. Rather cold. Tom came early
after Dean & they didn't come home tonite. Mon took Arthur to his
work & then he & I left home about 9 A.M. & went to Decorah. Stayed
there until about 11 & then went out to Ridgeway hunting for soy beans.
Went out to Wm. Betts but he didn't have any left so came back to Ridgeway
& saw Paul Reed & Albert Ellingson & they told where we could find
some so had a lunch in R. & then went out to Iverson's & got 9
bu. at $1 per bu. Came home thro' Bluffton. Mon spaded up a place in the
yard after we got home & I raked it. I went with him after Arthur about
5:30. Ole & Alice A. were here awhile early in A.M.
Tues. May 28
Not so nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was a nice day. Quite a little
warmer in P.M. Arthur dragged in A.M. Arthur planted beans in P.M. & Mon

Ryan's. Ole went too. We got home about 11:30. Dean didn't come
home tonite. Cool nite. Howard had Dr. R. down today, he has hog cholera. I
planted some garden stuff in the space we spaded up.

Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. I washed & ironed. They finished planting beans
in A.M. & Arthur dragged them in P.M. Mon went over to Marion's in
P.M. Arthur went places in eve. Dean didn't come home.
Thurs. May 30
Dandy nice day. Arthur blind plowed corn today. Mon went up to Fritz in A.M.
& got his walking plow & plowed the garden spots. He took it home about
4 P.M. I went over to Pearl's a few minutes in P.M.
Fri. May 31
Dandy day. Pretty warm. Arthur finished plowing the corn this A.M. Mon dragged
the garden spots in A.M. He went over to Marions awhile in P.M. & then came
back & helped me plant garden. Marion is sick. Clifford D. came just as
we were eating supper & Arthur went to Bluffton with him. Isa & Harlan
came along here at noon with a whole pail of fish & they left us quite a
few.
Sat. June 1
Dandy day. Pretty warm. Arthur dragged the corn field in A.M. & Clifford
D. came at noon & Arthur went to Cresco with him. Mon & I went to Decorah.
Went over to Marion's first too see how he was. He is some better today.
Dean & Tom were here awhile in A.M. & then Dean came home in P.M. Arthur
took what soy beans we didn't use down to Roscoe early in A.M. Mon, Dean
& I went to B.O. in eve. Mon & I got home about 10:30. Richard B. bro't
Dean home about 2. Looked rather rainy in eve but didn't rain.
Sun. June 2
Pretty hot, windy day. Mon & Arthur went over to Marions about 8:30 &
then Arthur went on down to the creek & fished awhile. They got home about
11. Marion is a little better. Arthur got 16 fish. Mon, Arthur & I went
to Decorah to the show in P.M. "Buck Benny Rides Again". It was
sure good. Laughed until we cried. Had 11 little pigs this morn.
Mon. June 3
Dandy nice day. Looked rainy in P.M. but it didn't rain. Mon left home
a little after 7 for B.O. Primary Election so he had to be at the Hall at 8
& spend the day & nite. The boys did odd jobs. I went to B.O. in P.M.
to a surprise birthday party for Mrs. Rex Smith. Quite a few out. Had a nice
program at the house & then over to the church basement for lunch. Had a
swell lunch. We got home about 6. Mon got home about 3 A.M.
Tues. June 4
Dandy nice day again. Pretty warm & windy. Looked rainy again but didn't
rain. Mon & Arthur went over to Marions early in A.M. & got potatoes
& we planted our potatoes. Arthur & I went to B.O. in P.M. Went over
to Isa's & got some tomato & pepper plants to set out. Stopped
at mama's a little while. The boys & I set out plants when we got
home.
Wed. June 5
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Arthur went over to Marion's in
A.M. Dean plowed corn.
Thurs. June 6
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm & windy. Dean plowed corn. Mon & Arthur
made a hog crate in A.M. I went to Lutheran L.A.S. at the church basement in
P.M. with Kate L. & Nora Lange. Agnes W., Irene F & Gladys Blaess entertained.
Very large crowd. Had a swell supper. Arthur went to Lodge in eve & Dean
went to Bluffton with Clifford D. Pearl & Darlene were here a few minutes
at noon.
Fri. June 7
Very nice in A.M. Pretty warm. Clouded up in P.M. & the wind changed about
4 P.M. & it rained. Some places real hard & others just a nice shower.
We got a nice shower. Cleared off again in P.M. but clouded up & was misty
all nite. Dean plowed corn. Marion walked over in A.M. & was here for dinner.
Pauline Lange drove her car up here & then Henry took us to B.O. & we
went to Club at Anita's with Inez. Quite a few out & we had a dandy
lunch. Pauline sure has a sweet baby & so good. The red heifer had a calf
today.
Sat. June 8
Misty damp day. Rather cool. Dean plowed corn in A.M. We had an early dinner
& then Mon, Arthur & I went & got Marion & went to Decorah.
We took 456 eggs down to Matter's too be hatched. Run around with Ruth
P. We all went to B.O. in eve. I went up to mama's awhile. Marvin was
there too. Charley & Mrs. W. & Ruth were here in A.M. Chas. W. came
in P.M. after we were gone & he & Dean took one of our sows to Prosper
& sold her to Lloyd K. She weighed 310 lbs. @ $3.80 per cwt & bro't
$11.78. Mistake $4.25 per cwt & bro't $13.13. Marie Wicks & Paul
Snyder were married at Muscatine today.
Sun. June 9
Quite a nice day. A little cool. Didn't do much of anything. Clifford
D. came at noon & the boys went riding with him in P.M. Dean went over to
Howard's in eve.
Mon. June 10
Dandy nice day but quite windy & somewhat cool. I washed & ironed. Mon
bought a single row corn plow in Decorah Sat. & they bro't it out
about 9 A.M. so both boys plowed corn.
Tues. June 11
Dandy nice day. The boys plowed corn. Mon went over to Marions early in A.M.
too help him take out his fence. (They are grading the road from Marion's
gate to Wilhelm's bridge). They finished taking out the fence at noon
& came over here for dinner. Mon went back after dinner & helped him
with his engine but they couldn't make it work. They came down & got
me & we went to B.O. I went up to mama's. Aunt Alice was there awhile
too. I worked in the garden in A.M. & a while in P.M. too. It rained some
in the nite.
Wed. June 12
Damp, misty day. Rather cool. Mon & I went up & got mama & took
her to Decorah about 9 A.M. She got her hair fixed & some new shoes &
things. We left her at the bus depot. She is going to Davenport this P.M. We
got home about noon. Arthur had gone fishing. Dean went out to plow corn about
3 P.M.
Thurs. June 13
Dandy nice day. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. & then up town.
He didn't get home until about 2 P.M. Dean plowed corn all day. Clifford
& Ed D. came after Arthur & he went to Decorah with them about 11. Mon
plowed corn some in P.M. Arthur got home about 4 & then he went out to plow.
Fri. June 14
Dandy nice day only rather windy. Pretty warm. The boys plowed corn all day.
They finished all the corn the second time & started thro' the beans
again. Mon & I worked in the garden in A.M. & he started painting the
garage in P.M. Leonard W. came over in eve & he & the boys went down
to Roscoe's & to Bluffton.
Sat. June 15
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. The boys finished plowing the beans the second
time about 11:30. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed.
We went to B.O. in eve. Quite a crowd in town. The boys didn't come home
with us. We got home about 11. Had 13 more little pigs today & that is the
last. We now have 61. Arlan Falck was operated on at the Decorah Hospital about
12:30 tonite for a bursted appendix.
Sun. June 16
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. Marion came over about 9 A.M. & then we all
went down to Padden's. Had strawberry shortcake & plenty of it. Had
a good time. Got home about 6. Fred W. was over & spent the eve.
Mon. June 17
Dandy nice day. Plenty hot. The boys did odd jobs. Mon went over to Mabel in
A.M. & then over to Marions after dinner. We all went to Canton about 3
P.M. after some lime for the stock. Dr. Reide came over about 7 P.M. & vaccinated
our hogs for cholera. After they finished here Mon went over to Marion's
& helped him vaccinate.
Tues. June 18
Nice day. Got pretty windy in P.M. The boys helped Marion all day, fix fence.
They were all over here for dinner. Mon painted. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O.
in eve. Marion went along too. The Club entertained the fathers at the M.E.
Church basement. Had quite a crowd out. Had a nice lunch. Got home about 11.
Bea was here awhile in A.M.
Wed. June 19
Nice day but cooler. Dean went over & got Marion early in A.M. They drove
15 of our calves over & put them in Marion's pasture. Marion came
back with them to dinner & then Arthur took him home in P.M. Loyal &
Harlan drove the pony down in A.M. after cobs & were here for dinner. Mon
painted in P.M. Arthur cut weeds. Dean helped me some in the garden. Ole A.
& Bill E. were here in A.M. to fix up the insurance on the garage &
hen house. They hadn't been insured yet.
Thurs. June 20
Nice cool day. The boys cleaned the brooder house & did odd jobs in A.M.
& plowed corn in P.M. Mon painted all day. I scrubbed the brooder house
some in P.M. The men went up town in eve too hear the Louis-Godoy fight (Our
radio battery is dead). Louis won.
Fri. June 21
Not so hot today either. Nice day. The boys plowed corn. Mon painted in A.M.
He took me up to Gladys' about 11 & got a couple of boxes of strawberries
for dinner. He went over to Marions & to Mabel in P.M.
Sat. June 22
Pretty hot in A.M. & in P.M. until about 4:30. It clouded up in P.M. &
rained in streaks. It rained some here earlier in P.M. & then a little after
5 we sure had a good soaker. Rained some in the nite too. The boys finished
going thro' their corn the 2nd time about 9:30 & came up & took
baths & got cleaned up. We had an early dinner went over & got Marion
& went to Decorah. The boys went down to the Hospital too see Arlan awhile.
We got home about 5. We went up town in eve. Got home about 11. We sold a cow
(Old Mag) to Lloyd K. this A.M. She weighed 1100 lbs. @ $4 per cwt. & bro't
$44.00. Mon went up to Prosper in A.M. after he got his chores done & got
the money.
Sun. June 23
Looked pretty rainy in A.M. early but cleared off later & was a nice day.
Quite warm. Roscoe D. came about 11 A.M. & stayed until after dinner &
then he & the boys went to Bluffton. Some of the folks from up here went
to Iowa City today for a shower for Marie & Paul but Mon wouldn't
go. I wanted too go pretty bad. It rained most of the nite I guess.
Mon. June 24
Quite a nice day but windy & cool. Didn't do much of anything. Francis
& Uncle Dan were over by Dave's tearing up one of Cramer's old
dump trucks & they were here a little while in P.M. Dean was over there
awhile too. Howard, Pearl, Verna & the baby were here a few minutes in eve.
There was a pretty bad looking storm came up in the north in eve but it didn't
amount to much here. The wind blew quite hard & it rained hard for a little
while.
Tues. June 25
Nice day, but cool & windy. Francis, Uncle Dan & Ruth came about 9 A.M.
The men went over & worked at the truck & Ruth spent the day here. Francis
& Dan came over here for dinner. Francis bro't up a gang plow for
Mon & the boys spent most of the day getting that together. Mon went to
B.O. in P.M.
Wed. June 26
Nice day. The boys plowed corn. Dean helped Howard in P.M. & Mon plowed
while he was over there. I worked in the garden most of the day. Mon helped
me in A.M. Arthur went over to Gust's in A.M. & got the manure spreader
& he hauled out a little manure. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve.
I went over to Isa's. Dean got his hair cut.
Thurs. June 27
Quite a nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & sprinkled some. Had
quite a rain late in eve. I washed & ironed. Mon painted & the boys
plowed corn. Mon took Lizzie & I to B.O. about 4:30 to M.E.L.A.S. at the
church. Gladys A., Mary Murdock, Florence & Edith Perry entertained. Large
crowd out & a swell supper. Marion rode home with us & Mrs. Krumm part
way.
Fri. June 28
Quite a nice day but plenty cool. The boys cleaned the hen house & hauled
manure. The truck from the fox farm at Dover Minn came while the men were milking
& Mon sold Powder (the mule) to them $6.00.
Sat. June 29
Dandy nice day. Some warmer. The boys tried to plow corn but it was too wet,
so they hauled manure. Marion came down at noon & went to Decorah with us.
Arthur didn't go. Mon got his hair cut. Marion came home to supper with
us & then all of us but Arthur went to B.O. in eve. The 4H boys & girls
had an ice cream social this eve & Olive & I went up there awhile. We
got home about 11. Howard & Allen Q. rode home with us.
Sun. June 30
Nice day. Rather cool. Dean went over to Howard's in A.M. & Arthur
went fishing. He got a few. Dean went down on Pine Creek in P.M.
Mon. July 1
Dandy nice day. The boys plowed corn. Mon & I worked at the brooder house
& in the garden in A.M. & we went to Decorah after the chickens in P.M.
We got 339 out of the 456 eggs. They are quite nice. 2¼ c. per egg for
hatching so they cost us $10.26. Mon went up to the school house in eve to a
school meeting & the boys went over to Dawleys.
Tues. July 2
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed & run after chickens. The boys plowed
corn. Mon & I went down to Wernett's late in P.M. & borrowed a
brooder stove. Ole came down early in eve & then he & Mon went over
to Walt's to a beer party. Max Baer & Tony Galento fight tonite. Max
won in the 8th.
Wed. July 3
Dandy nice day. Dean plowed corn. Arthur started to mow weeds in A.M. &
he broke the mower tongue so Mon had to go to Prosper & get a board too
make a tongue. He & Arthur made that in P.M. I went to Lutheran L.A.S. at
the church parlors in P.M. with Kate L. & Nora L. Mrs. Jarstad entertained.
Quite a few out & a swell supper.
Thurs. July 4
Dandy nice day. Mon & I went to the Club picnic at the swimming pool at
Decorah. Most of the members out. Had a dandy dinner & a good time. Ate
10 gals of ice cream in P.M. Pauline Reed rode back to B.O. with us. We took
the boys to B.O. on our way to Decorah. The boys went places in eve. Roscoe
D. was here awhile in A.M. & in P.M.
Fri. July 5
Nice day. The men mowed weeds & did odd jobs. Loyal was down & spent
the day & Mon & I took him to B.O. in eve.

Nice day. It looked rainy some time but didn't rain. Pretty windy. Arthur
mowed some in A.M. & broke the mower. Mon, Dean, Marion & I went to
Decorah in P.M. Arthur mowed a little & did odd jobs. Mon, Dean & I

Pretty warm day. Looked rainy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice
day. Lester's, Claude's, Dell's & Marion were here. We
had a picnic dinner. Picked gooseberries in P.M. Arthur went to the show at

Nice day. Mighty warm. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed corn a while in A.M.
& Arthur mowed. The men put up hay. Pretty hot work. We went up town awhile
in eve. Gust & Kate were up town too & I went & sat in the car with
Kate. Ida Q. was here awhile in A.M.
Tues. July 9
Mighty hot day. The men put up hay & plowed corn. Mon & I went to Decorah
a few minutes in P.M. Warm nite.
Wed. July 10
Mighty warm until about 4:30 P.M. a bad storm came up & it sure cooled things
off. The men hayed. They just got their last load of hay in when the storm struck.
It looked mighty bad. The wind blew very hard & the dust was so bad (before
it started to rain) I couldn't see the barn. It was such a beating rain.
Went thro' everything. They had a tornado over around Mabel. Many barns
blown down & stock killed.
Thurs. July 11
Cold, dreary, misty day. Mon & I went up town about 10:30 & got dishes
& chairs from the church. We had M.E.L.A.S. here in P.M. Quite a few out.
Had a dandy supper. Took in $9.89. The boys went to B.O. in eve.
Fri. July 12
Cold day but bright. Arthur mowed hay in A.M. Mon & I took the dishes &
chairs back after dinner. Mon & Dean worked at the hay loader in A.M. &
P.M.
Sat. July 13
Quite a nice day but the wind was cool. The men put up the rest of the hay they
had mowed in A.M. & Arthur went to Decorah in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve.
The M.E.L.A.S. had an ice cream Social on the parsonage lawn & I went up
there to help but there was too much help. Not such a large crowd out. We got
home about 12:45. Cool nite.
Sun. July 14
Nice day. Quite warm. Dean was over to Howards in A.M. & then he went for
a ride with them in P.M. Over where the tornado struck. Around Mabel & north.
Mon & I went for a ride over east in P.M. We saw some of the damage of the
storm but only 2 barns that were blown down. There were over 20 blown down.
Mon. July 15
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed corn in A.M. & Arthur mowed.
They put up hay in P.M. Stacked it out in the field. Ole & Gladys came down
early in A.M. & then Mon & Ole went over to Ridgeway too see about buying
a combine. They got home about 2 P.M. We went up town in eve. Mama got home
this P.M. & I went up too see her. Queen had a little colt tonite.
Tues. July 16
Nice day. Arthur mowed in A.M. Dean mowed the yard & did odd jobs. Ole &
Gladys came down about 9:30 A.M. & we took our car & went over to Ridgeway
again too see a combine work. Mr. Hovden took us in his car down by Spillville
to watch a small combine work & then on to Calmar too see a large one then
to O.B. Goodno's too see a large one then back to Ridgeway. We got home
about 1 & didn't buy one. Arland Falck was here awhile in eve. Walt,
Ruby & baby, their hired man, Gust, Kate, Fritz, Marion & Bill K. were
here & spent the eve. They had a keg of beer. Kate had to pick a row with
Ruby. They went home about 12:30.
Wed. July 17
Nice day. Arthur mowed in A.M. & they put up hay in P.M. Mon & Dean
helped me in the garden in A.M. & I worked some there in P.M.
Thurs. July 18
Quite nice in A.M. but got mighty hot in P.M. Arthur mowed in A.M. & they
put up hay in P.M. I led the horse on the hay fork so Mon could help Dean in
the barn. We went up town in eve. I went up to mama's awhile. Olive &
Marvin were there too.
Fri. July 19
Mighty hot day. We finished filling the barn this A.M. I led Jack on the hay
fork. The men worked at the binder in P.M. I went to Club at Florence E's
with Dorothy S. in P.M. Gladys went too. Quite a crowd out. Had a swell lunch.
We went up town a few minutes in eve too get some batteries for the pumping
engine. Warm nite.
Sat. July 20
Another hot day. Mon went up & got mama early in A.M. & she helped me
dress chickens & do some other things. We took her home at noon & went
on to Decorah. I got my hair fixed (.70¢ now) We went up town in eve. The
boys & I went up to Mama's awhile. They had a big time with Jerome.
Marvin was there too. Looked rainy in eve but didn't rain. Warm nite.
Sun. July 21
Hot day. Arthur & Dean went & got mama early in A.M. Lester's,
Claude's, Aunt Lissa, Uncle Albert's, Uncle Aaron, Omri & Ambrose,
Uncle Marion, Bernice & Maxine were here for a picnic dinner. Had a dandy
dinner. Loyal was trying too get Zippie too come out & he broke the cellar
& let Zip loose. Isa & Lester were helping Loyal catch Zip too put his
collar on when he bit both of them. They left him alone then & he hiked
out & left us. Clara & John Emery & niece & Kenneth Harvey were
here in P.M. too. Mon took Marion home about 6. Hot nite again.
Mon. July 22
Mighty hot day. Mon started cutting grain this A.M. It was so hot in P.M. he
didn't go out until about 4 P.M. & then he cut until dark. The boys
went out to shock after they got chores done & they shocked until about
8:30. Arland F. was here most of P.M. I didn't do much of anything. Too
hot. The bell cow had a calf tonite.
Tues. July 23
Hot day again. I washed & ironed. Mon cut grain part of the day again &
until about 7:30. The boys shocked after supper & some in the day time.
We went up town a few minutes in eve too try & cool off. Hot nite.
Wed. July 24
Warm day but not quite as bad as the other days. More of a breeze. Had a little
shower at noon. The men cut & shocked in A.M. & then went out about
2 P.M. Finished about 4 P.M. They sure were a dirty bunch when they got thro'.
All had to have baths. We went up town in eve. The Club had an ice cream Social
on Cecil Wicks' lawn for the benefit of the cemetry. Had a good crowd.
Thurs. July 25
Quite a little cooler today but still warm. Looked rainy all day but just got
a little sprinkle in P.M. We didn't do much of anything. I went to M.E.L.A.S.
in P.M. with Maxine, Lizzie & Bernice. They with Stella Halse & Mary
Porter entertained the aid at the church parlors. Quite a few out. Mon &
Arthur came up town in eve so I stayed up town. Stella R. & I went over
too see Clara McCabe & her baby girl. It rained most of the nite I guess.
Quite a bit of thunder & lightning.
Fri. July 26
Cooler day. Rained early in A.M. & sprinkled off & on all day. Quite
a lot of thunder during the day. Sun shone some. We went over after Marion about
11:45 but he wasn't home & we went on to Decorah. I went up to Mabel's
& she trimmed off some of my long hair. Saw Ruth. They were up to Geo. Schamel's
funeral. We got home about 5:45. Harry Q. was here in A.M. & Howard here
in eve. "Happy" was here a minute in eve too.
Sat. July 27
Quite a nice day. Cooler. Clifford & Roscoe D. came in A.M. early &
the boys went with them & spent the day. Mon took me to B.O. in P.M. (also
Dorothy & Freddie S.) The Mothers of the Community entertained the Joan
of Arc. We sure had a fine time & a swell lunch. Quite a crowd out. It was
at the M.E. Church basement. We got home about 5:45. I saw Mary Muckler (Eidie).
She was there with Florence E. We went up town in eve. The boys went to Decorah
with the Dawley boys so they didn't come home with us. We got home about
11:30. Arland was here quite a while in A.M.
Sun. July 28
Quite a warm day. Rained some early in A.M. & then sprinkled some during
the day. Sun shone some too. Arland was here in A.M. & then he & Mon
went over to "Happy's" & Marion's awhile. Clifford
& Roscoe were here awhile in A.M. too. Arthur went down to Breezy Hill in
P.M. Roller skating.
Mon. July 29
Pretty warm day. The men did odd jobs & so did I. The boys hauled some manure.
A. B. Johnson came in A.M. with a full blood Herford bull calf & Mon traded
our bull for the calf even up.
Tues. July 30
Nice warm day. I washed & ironed. The men hauled manure. Mon went over to
Marion's & "Happy's" in P.M. Dean helped Fritz schock
today. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve. It cooled off some in eve. Arthur
plowed some beans in P.M.
Wed. July 31
Rather rainy looking & did sprinkle off & on all day. Rained in the
nite. Dean helped Fritz in A.M. & Arthur plowed beans. They hauled manure
in P.M. Stanley P. came up about 9:30 A.M. & was here for dinner. He, Mon
& I went over to Marion's in P.M. & he wasn't home. We stopped
at Red's awhile then over to Florence's & back to B.O. We saw
Marion in town. Stanley went up to Aunt Alice's a few minutes & I
stopped at mama's. We got back here about 5 & Stanley went right on
to Decorah. Fred, Arthur & Howard were here in eve. It rained most of the
nite.
Thurs. Aug. 1
Looked rainy but didn't rain. Cleared off & was a nice day. Quite
warm. Mon went over to Krumms early in A.M. & then on to B.O. Loyal came
home with him at noon. The boys hauled manure. Pearl & the kids came over
in P.M. & got some beans & peas. Had a bad electric storm in eve. It
rained very hard. Over 2 inches of rain fell, but the wind didn't blow.
Fri. Aug. 2
Quite a nice day but pretty hot. Mon went over to Marions early in A.M. &
was gone until noon. The boys hauled manure. I went to Club at Vera Gate's
with Harold & Dorothy S. Quite a few went, for such a long ways too go.
Veld Kess & Lola Goldsworthy were initiated. Had a good time & a swell
lunch. We came home the long way by Canton. Got home about 6:30. The men went
to B.O. in eve. Pretty hot nite.
Sat. Aug. 3
Clouded part of the day & sun shone some. We went to Decorah about 12. It
sure did pour down there in P.M. Cleared off then & was quite nice for a
while. We had a shower after we got home. Nice in eve. I got my hair fixed &
Mon & Arthur got hair cuts. Mon, Loyal & I went to B.O. in eve. Loyal
went home. Howard went back to Canistota today & Dean did his chores.

Dandy nice day. Not too warm. We went up to mama's & spent the day
& Claude's were there too. Lester's came a little while in P.M.
Arland came about 8 & stayed until after 11. The boys were in bed.

Dandy nice day. Cooler. I washed & ironed. The men hauled manure. Loyal
came down. Arland came about supper time & he & Mon went over to Marion's
too look at the cattle. He was here for supper.

Nice cool day. The boys finished hauling manure in A.M. They went to Harry's
too thresh in P.M. Mon & I took mama to Cresco in P.M. too see Dr. Jinderlee
about her eyes. We each got a crate of peaches .89¢ for hers & .83¢

Wed. Aug. 7
Dandy nice day. All three of the boys threshed at Fred W's. Mon went to
B.O. in A.M. & didn't get home until late in P.M. Maxine took Lizzie
& I to B.O. in P.M. to Clark Manning's funeral at the A.C. church.
Quite a crowd out. We went up to mama's awhile after the funeral. Got
home a little after 5 & Mon was just going over to Fred's so I rode
over there with him. He sold the cattle to F.F. Doubek. 7 head for $300. They
came after them just as the boys got home from threshing & they all had
to go over to Marion's & get them up from the pasture & loaded.
They went to B.O. afterward so didn't get home until about 9. Arland was
here a minute in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 8
Dandy nice day. Quite cool. The boys threshed at Fred Walter's in A.M.
& at Roy's & Dave's in P.M. Mon & I went to Cresco early
in A.M. too get the check for the cattle cashed. We went up town in eve a little
while. Loyal got clean clothes. It sprinkled some in the nite. I got a letter
from Cecilia today.
Fri. Aug. 9
Damp day. Sprinkled off & on all A.M. & rained quite hard in P.M. &
eve at times. The boys finished threshing at Roy's & were at Howard's
until noon. It got too wet to thresh after that. Mon helped Roy this A.M. with
the threshing. We bought two bushels of potatoes of Clyde Halse in P.M. .75¢
per bu. They are sure nice.
Sat. Aug. 10
Not such a nice day. We went over & got Marion & all went to Decorah
before noon. Large crowd in town. Loyal went home with his folks from Decorah.
We went to B.O. in eve. I went up to mama's awhile. It rained hard in
eve. Loyal came home with us.
Sun. Aug. 11
Quite a nice day. Arthur & Loyal went to Breezy Hill in P.M. roller skating.
Dean went down to the creek.
Mon. Aug. 12
Sprinkled a little early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice until late in
P.M. it clouded up & it sure did rain from about 5 until 6 P.M. I washed
& ironed & did some baking. The boys threshed at Howard's in P.M.
They finished just as it started to rain.
Tues. Aug. 13
Quite a nice day. Although it was cloudy part of the time. Mon, Dean, Loyal
& I went to B.O. awhile in P.M. I went over to Isa's. We went up to
Ludwigs in eve & got some apples.
Wed. Aug. 14
Cloudy part of the day. Sun shone part of the time & we had 2 or 3 little
showers. Isa & Lester came down about 8 A.M. too help thresh. They were
going to turn out shocks but it looked so rainy they didn't know what
to do. They made up their minds to thresh about 10 so we girls had to get busy.
Pearl was here too. Arthur went to B.O. after mama & to get some meat but
he had to go to Mabel too get weiners & they didn't get here until
about 11:45. They started threshing about 11. It went pretty good in spite of
the showers. They finished about 5. We got 747 bu. of oats. We took mama home
in eve. We had another nice shower in eve. We had another little calf today.
Thurs. Aug. 15
Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy nice day. The
boys took some corn up to Richard's early in A.M. & had it ground.
Mon went down to Leonhart's early in A.M. We all went up to Fritz's
in P.M. too thresh. They finished there about 5:30. We went to B.O. in eve &
then Mon, Dean, Mama & I went to Canton to the "Day Off" Sure
a crowd up there. Quite a lot going on. The "Vikings" played &
they sure were good. We got home about 12:30. Arthur & Loyal had rode home
from B.O. with Roy H.
Fri. Aug. 16
Rather cloudy part of the day but it only sprinkled a little. The boys went
up to Ludwig's to thresh but it was so wet they couldn't thresh
there so they went over to Happy's about 11 & started up there. Finished
there today too. Mon & Loyal went over there a little while in P.M. &
when they came back we went up to B.O. a while. Took some cukes to Isa.
Sat. Aug. 17
Quite a nice day but clouded up late in P.M. & it rained quite hard about
5:30 & until 6. Cleared off quite nice in eve. Cooler. Rained hard in the
nite again. Arthur threshed at Wilhelm's. He got home about 4:30. Mon,
Loyal & I went to Decorah about 9 A.M. We took some oats down & had
them hulled. We all went down to the Fair in eve. Very large crowd. The Free
Acts were good. We got home about 1. Dean came home with Art W.

Nice day but cool. Arthur & Loyal went roller skating in P.M. at Breezy
Hill. Dean went down to the creek. Arthur & Loyal went down to Silver Creek
in A.M. fishing & they got a big rattle snake.
Mon. Aug. 19
Quite a nice day. The boys threshed at Ludwig's. Loyal went up there awhile
in A.M. We went to B.O. in eve. Arthur & I went up home a little while.
I washed & ironed today. Cold nite.
Tues. Aug. 20
Nice day but cool. The boys threshed at Richard's in A.M. & then they
moved the rig down on the Duprez place & threshed there in P.M. Richard
had grain down there too. Arthur got thro' at noon but Dean had to go
in P.M. too. Mon, Arthur, Loyal & I went up north of Harmony in P.M. to
an R.E.A. demonstration. It was sure interesting. Everything you could think
of in the electrical appliance's. Cool nite again.
Wed. Aug. 21
Nice day. Arthur drove Roy Halse's truck for him hauling R. Blaess'
grain up to Mike's in A.M. & then he pulled the separator up to Steve
Pierce's behind the truck & then threshed at Ed Arnold's in
P.M. It was about 8 P.M. when he got home. Dean helped Richard in A.M. but he
got home in time for dinner. Mon & Loyal went to B.O. early in A.M. &
got a lamb that Mon & Gene Mc. had bought of Ole A. & Merlin butchered
it, & then we took it to Decorah & put our share in the locker &
left Gene's too be cooked. I got my hair fixed. Dean & Loyal went
fishing in P.M. & got about 25. It sprinkled some in the nite. They started
to work the south road thro' the hills late this P.M.
Thurs. Aug. 22
Dandy nice day but cool. The men folks spent most of the A.M. over with the
men working on the road. Arthur went over to Hugo Noecker's in P.M. too
thresh for Walt Rehwinkel. Loyal & Dean went fishing. They got 25 or 26.
Some pretty good sized ones. Mon spent the P.M. with the road men. Dean went
over to Howards in eve. Charlotte came down in P.M. & got some cukes.
Fri. Aug. 23
Quite a nice day. Arthur worked at Hugo's all day today. They finished
in P.M. Mon spent the day with the road men. They finished the road late in
P.M. Dean & Loyal spent most of the day there too. It rained in the nite.
Sat. Aug. 24
Rained most of the day. Sometimes quite hard. Rained most of the nite too. We
went to Decorah about 11 A.M. & spent the rest of the day. We went to B.O.
in eve. The boys & I went up to mama's awhile. Had a lot of fun with
Jerome. Mon got a hair cut today.
Sun. Aug. 25
Not very nice day. The sun shone a little but it rained off & on all day.
The boys went down to the creek fishing in A.M. but the water was too muddy.
Howard was over awhile in P.M.
Mon. Aug. 26
Rained off & on all day. Rather cold. We went to B.O. in P.M. Loyal went
home. I spent the P.M. at mama's. Rained all nite I guess.
Tues. Aug. 27
Rather damp in A.M. & rained in P.M. Sometimes quite hard. Dean helped Roy
Halse in A.M. Olaf, Kate, Bobbie & Harold Lovlien came back from Spokane
today for a short visit.
Wed. Aug. 28
Not so nice in A.M. but brightened up some in P.M. The sun shone most of the
P.M. Isa, Lester & the boys came down in A.M. & stayed for dinner. We
had a couple of our early young roosters for dinner. Mon, Dean & I went
to B.O. in P.M. I went to Lutheran L.A.S. at the church parlors. Very large
crowd out & a swell supper. Saw Olaf's folks. They look pretty good.
The boys have grown a lot.
Thurs. Aug. 29
Not so nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was quite a nice day. Had a
couple of little showers in P.M. though. I canned some plums that Isa bro't
me early in A.M. & then washed & ironed. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. &
the boys went fishing. Got a few.
Fri. Aug. 30
Quite a nice day although we had a couple of hard showers in P.M. I went to
Club at Stella Halse's in P.M. with Pauline. Not many out. Had a shower
for Violet U. Had a swell supper.
Sat. Aug. 31
Sprinkled most of A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Quite a bit warmer.
Marion came over about 10 A.M. & then Mon, Marion, Dean & I went up
& got mama & went to Decorah. Large crowd in town. Visited with Ruth
most of the time. Saw Charlotte & Jerome down town so we took him to the
car & kept him while his mother did some shopping. Had a big time with him.
So did Arland F. We went up town in eve. Not many in town. Went over to Merlin's
new store & bought 100 lbs. of sugar $4.85. Mon also bought a bu. of peaches
$1.75 & a crate of prunes .79¢. Big time there late in eve. The Blaess
bunch had a fight. We got home about 12:30.
Sun. Sept. 1
Dandy nice day. We went up to Lovliens & spent the day. They had a picnic
for Olaf's folks. Not so many there. All relatives but us. Had a good
time & good eats. Mabel is home for today & tomorrow too. Arthur went
to Decorah to the Show in eve.
Mon. Sept. 2
Dandy nice day. Some warmer. Mon & I canned the bu. of peaches & the
prunes. Got 21½ qts. of peaches & 13 qts. of prunes. The boys did
odd jobs. Olaf & Kate were here awhile in eve. Howard was here in P.M. School
started in this district today with Alice Albertson as teacher.
Tues. Sept. 3
Nice day. Dean went over & watched them work Fred's road most of A.M.
Mon & Arthur took some corn over to "Happy's" early in
A.M. to crack for the chickens & didn't get back until noon. Mon &
I went down to Mettie's in P.M. & got some little apples to can. They
are threshing there today. Mama is helping also Mollie O'Brien. May Burgess
came while we were there too. I helped a little. Arthur went fishing in P.M.
Got quite a few. Dean went over to Howard's when the road men were working
on one of their cat's. Martin Jaarstad was here awhile in eve.
Wed. Sept. 4
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Arthur helped Martin J. thresh at Dell's
& at his place. Dean & Mon were over to Howard's awhile in A.M.
watching the men & then Mon went to B.O. awhile & Dean went over to
Dell's forty when they were threshing. Mon went to Prosper in P.M. &
Dean helped Fritz put up alfalfa. Arthur Smith was here awhile in eve.
Thurs. Sept. 5
Dandy nice day. Mon & I fixed some of the little apples from Metties &
canned 20 qts. Arthur helped Arthur S. today. Threshed at Merle's &
Brayton's. Dean helped Fritz. They finished about 4 & Fritz bro't
him home & stayed awhile. We went up town in eve. I went up to mama's.
Olive, Marie & Marvin were there too. Marie is home until Sunday. Arthur
was up town & rode home with us. Archie Halvorson bro't down our posts
& wire, this A.M., that Mon bo't yesterday.
Fri. Sept. 6
Dandy nice day. The boys did odd jobs hauled out posts too build the new fence
around the east part of the place. Mon & I finished up the little apples.
Canned 11 qts. today.
Sat. Sept. 7
Dandy nice day. Pretty hot. Mon went over to Marion's early in A.M. &
got him & then we all went to Decorah. I got my hair fixed & Arthur
got his hair cut. Saw Ruth awhile. We went to B.O. in eve. Got another crate
of prunes tonite.
Sun. Sept. 8
Nice day but cooler. Mon & the boys left quite early in A.M. The boys down
to the creek to wash the car & Dean stayed to fish. Mon to Marion's.
After Arthur got the car washed Mon took it on to B.O. & Arthur walked home.
Arthur & I were going to the Show in P.M. but Mon didn't get back
until about 2 so it was too late. Mon went on back to Marion's where Fred
W. set up a keg of beer to the men he threshed for. Arthur went fishing in P.M.
Got quite a few. We all went to the show at Decorah in eve. The "Return
of Frank James". It was pretty good. Rained quite hard while we were down
town.
Mon. Sept. 9
Cool day but nice. The boys fixed fence. Mon & I went to Decorah in A.M.
& got some oats hulled. We got a bu. of pears $1.49. Mon & I canned
prunes in P.M. 12 qts. I canned 4 qts. of tomatoes. Verna & Darlene were
here awhile after school. Darlene started too school this year. Isa & Lester
were here awhile in A.M. Martin J. was here awhile in eve.
Tues. Sept. 10
Nice day but cool. Mon & Dean hauled out some fence posts & wire in
A.M. & Mon helped me peel pears. We finished them up in P.M. Got 18 qts.
Arthur worked at the crusher.
Wed. Sept. 11
Nice day but quite windy. I washed & ironed. Arthur worked at the crusher
& Dean helped fill silo at Brayton's for Arthur S. We went up town
awhile in eve.
Thurs. Sept. 12
Nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher & Dean helped Wimpie spread lime
all day. Mon did odd jobs & so did I. We had another little calf today.
Mon, Dean & I went up town in eve. I went up home a minute.
Fri. Sept. 13
Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher & Dean helped Wimpie. I went
to Club at Catherine H's. in P.M. with Glady's. Quite a few out
& we sure had a swell lunch. Roy H. took a cow to Decorah for Mon about
1:30. They took her down to the community sale. Got $61. for her.
Sat. Sept. 14
Dandy nice day. The boys worked in A.M. & came home at noon. We went to
Decorah in P.M. Marvin went with us & then came on home with us. We went
to B.O. in eve. Arthur, Marvin & I went up to mama's awhile. Marvin
went home with his folks. Mon got another crate of peaches tonite. .75¢.

Sun. Sept. 15
Dandy nice day. Mon went up & got mama early in A.M. We had the picnic of
papa's folks here today. Claude's, Lester's, Walt B's,
Ester's, Mary & Edward, Lena & Clifford. Had a swell dinner &
lunch. Mon took Lena, Mary, Ester & her little girl, Marlene & I to
Bluffton in P.M. Ester had never been there before. They went home about 5:30.
Charlotte bro't Jerome down here about 6:30. They were going to the show
& she left him with mama. We had a big time with him. Mon & I took mama
home about 8. We had another little calf today.

Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy day. Arthur worked
at the crusher. Dean helped Dave put up hay. Mon started cutting beans in P.M.
I picked cukes & tomatoes & canned 6½ qts. of peaches in P.M.
Tues. Sept. 17
Dandy nice day in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & sprinkled off & on.
Had a little shower about 6:30. Pretty warm & windy. Arthur worked at the
crusher. John Friedhof & helper his brother came this A.M. too wire the
place. They got the house all wired & most everything done in here today.
Dean raked up what beans were cut in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went up town in
eve. Went up to mama's a minute.
Wed. Sept. 18
Very nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. Didn't rain though. Quite warm.
Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean helped around here until the boys
finished wiring & such which was about 2 P.M. Mon & Dean went down &
shocked beans after that. The cost of this much wiring was $77.38.

Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean worked
at the beans. I washed & ironed. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Our 24th Wedding anniversary. Dandy nice warm day. Arthur worked at the crusher.
Mon & Dean worked at the beans. Mon finished cutting them in A.M. &
they shocked in P.M.
Sat. Sept. 21
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Arthur worked at the crusher in A.M. He came home
at noon & helped Mon & Dean with the beans in P.M. Arthur & I took
Mon & Dean to B.O. in eve & then we went on to Decorah. Very large crowd
in town. We came back to B.O. & stopped awhile. Dean went home with Leonard
B. & stayed all nite. Clyde & Allen Q. rode home from B.O. with us.
We got home about 11:30. The white cow had a calf today.
Sun. Sept. 22
Not so nice early in A.M. Sprinkled a little but cleared off & was a dandy
nice day. We went over to Marion's about 9 A.M. & got him. Stopped
at B.O. & got the oil changed & tires pumped up. Left there at 10 &
went to La Crosse. Went north from Mabel to Rushford & then to Lax. Had
never been that way before. Had dinner at Lax & then back to La Cresent
& bought a bu. of apples $1.00 & a head of cabbage .5¢ & then
up the river to Winona. Drove around there awhile & then on to Rochester.
Drove around there a little & then home. Got home about 5:30. Went about
205 miles. Roscoe D. came just after we got home & stayed until about 8:30.
The white cow had milk fever & we had Dr. Reide over about 7:30 P.M. Dean
came home about 10:30 P.M. tonite. They bro't our R.E.A. poles for the
yard.
Mon. Sept. 23
Not such a nice day. Had a quite a little shower in P.M. also in eve. Arthur
worked at the crusher until it rained. He got home about 3 P.M.
Tues. Sept. 24
Nice day but cool. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon cut the beans in the garden
in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went up to Ole's in eve. Got some apples. Pretty
cold nite froze but not too much.
Wed. Sept. 25
30º this morn early. Dandy nice day but cool. Arthur worked at the crusher.
Dean helped Roy & Dave. I washed & ironed. The cow was worse again today
so Mon had Dr. R. over at noon again. They set our meter pole today. Mon started
cutting corn in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went up town awhile in eve. Froze quite
hard tonite.

About 27º this morn. Nice day but cold & windy. Arthur worked at the
crusher. Mon cut corn in A.M. & Dean shocked some. They both shocked in
P.M. The men were here in P.M. & dug holes for the light poles.

Dandy nice day. A little cool & windy. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon
finished cutting corn in A.M. & he & Dean shocked in P.M.
Sat. Sept. 28
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Arthur worked at the crusher in A.M. Mon & Dean
shocked corn in A.M. We all went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed &
Mon got a hair cut. We went up town awhile in eve. Lavonne Emery & Leonard
[Finke?] Donald Emery & Edna Anderson were married this A.M.

Dandy nice day. Clifford D. came up in A.M. & he & the boys went hunting.
They didn't get back until about 5. Dell & Mettie bro't mama
over here about 11 A.M. In P.M. Mon, mama & I went for a ride. Went as far
as Lourdes & back. Drove around Cresco some when we came home. Got home
about 4. Loyal was here awhile after we got home. Clifford D. came back again
when we were eating supper & he & the boys went to a chiravari on the
newly weds at John's in eve. They took mama back to Dell's on their
way over.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean finished shocking
the corn in A.M. They got a jag of corn in P.M. The men were here & set
our light poles today.
Tues. Oct. 1
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon took Arthur to his work at the crusher this
morning so he could have the car. He bro't Marion home with him too do
some work. They took Dean over to Dell Mc's about 10:30 A.M. too help
fill silo for Gilbert T. Mon, Marion & I went up town awhile in P.M. Went
over to Isa's a minute. We went over to the crusher after Arthur about
5:30. Dean Smith was here in A.M. & Mon bought 2 bu. of seed corn of him
(Pioneer HiBred).
Wed. Oct. 2
Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. I washed & ironed. Mon &
Dean dug potatoes. I went up & picked up a while late in P.M. First game
of the World Series Ball. Played at Cinn. between Detroit & Cinn. Detroit
won.
Thurs. Oct. 3
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean got
a jag of corn in A.M. & dug some potatoes in P.M. I canned ground cherries
& made catsup. We went up town in eve. Dean got his hair cut. Didn't
get home until after 11. It sprinkled in eve & some in the nite too. Listened
to the ball game Cinn.
Fri. Oct. 4
Had quite a little shower early in A.M. & then it sprinkled off & on
all day. Sun didn't shine. Arthur didn't go to work. Didn't
do much of anything. The men went out about 3 P.M. & worked until quitting
time. Dean finished digging & picking up the potatoes & Arthur &
Mon worked at the fence. Listened to the ball game. Detroit won 7-4. Played
at Detroit.
Sat. Oct. 5
Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher in A.M. Mon & Dean worked at
the fence. We went to Decorah in P.M. Quite a crowd in town. Was with Ruth awhile.
Clouded up late in P.M. & sprinkled a little & rained later in the nite.
We went to B.O. in eve & it was raining quite hard when we came home. Neal
G. rode up from Decorah with us. Listened to the ball game from the car. Cinn.
won. Played at Detroit.
Sun. Oct. 6
Rained quite hard early in A.M. & was cloudy & cold & windy all
day. Mon went over to Marions in A.M. & a couple of our calves had gotten
out & into Red's so he came back after the boys & they went up
there & bro't them home. Marion came along down & stayed for dinner.
Elmer, Ester & Neal G. & Ester's brother were here awhile late
in P.M. Listened to the ball game. Played at Detroit & Detroit got 7 scores
& Cinn. none.
Mon. Oct. 7
Dandy nice day although rather windy. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon &
Dean fixed fence. I washed & ironed. Listened to the ball game. Cinn. shut
out Detroit 4-0. Played at Detroit. Cold nite. Quite a hard freeze.
Tues. Oct. 8
Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean finished the fence
in A.M. & got the cattle out in the east field. We all went out in P.M.
& got a jag of corn. The men went to Bluffton in eve. They started stringing
the electric wires thro' the hills in P.M.
Wed. Oct. 9
Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. The men didn't do much of
anything. I went to B.O. about 11:30 A.M. with Kate L. to Lutheran L.A.S. at
the church. Ester Gilbertson & Norma Masters entertained. Not so many out
but we had a swell dinner. Got home about 5. The men worked at the wires on
the south road tightening them.
Thurs. Oct. 10
Not such a nice day. Clouded up & we had quite a little shower about noon
& then off & on during the P.M. & eve. Somewhat cooler. Arthur worked
at the crusher. Mon & Dean did odd jobs in A.M. & not much of anything
in P.M. The men came here about 11:30 & put the wires in from the road to
our meter pole. They finished about 2. Mon, Dean & I went up town awhile
in eve. Mon & Dean went over to Marion's early in A.M. & bro't
the rest of the calves home. Richard & Dickie were here awhile in P.M.
Fri. Oct. 11
Pretty foggy & damp early in A.M. but cleared off about 10 A.M. & was
a grand day. Quite warm. Arthur worked at the crusher. Dean took the team up
to Richard's early in A.M. too help him haul in & stack beans. I went
to Club at Pauline L's. with Gladys in P.M. Not so many out but we had
a good time & good lunch. Geo. & Earl Wernett were here awhile in eve.
Sat. Oct. 12
Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher in A.M. Mon & Dean did odd
jobs. We went to Decorah in P.M. Marvin went down with us. I got my hair fixed.
We went to B.O. in eve. I went up to the M.E. church to a creamed chicken supper.
I helped in the kitchen. Had a swell supper. Arthur went back to Decorah in
eve so we had to wait for him too come home. Got home some after 12. Cold nite.
Sun. Oct. 13
Dandy nice day. We went over to Marion's for dinner & spent the P.M.
Albert's were there. Had a picnic dinner & a good one. Had quite a
severe storm in the nite. Thunder, lightning, hail & a lot of rain. Dave
was here awhile in A.M.
Mon. Oct. 14
Not very nice in A.M. Rained some & was cloudy. Cleared off about noon &
was nice in P.M. but cold. Arthur didn't have to work today. We all went
up & got mama in A.M. & went to Cresco. She had to get her glasses fixed.
Got back here about 1 & had dinner. In P.M. Mama & the men blackened
the sitting room stove & put it up. We took mama home in eve. Pretty cold
nite.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean got a load of corn
in A.M. I washed & ironed. John Freidhof & helpers were here in P.M.
& put up our outside wires.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon went with him in the morning.
The trustees had too be at the Hall at B.O. all day for Conscription Day. All
the men between the ages of 21 & 36 had to register for possible service
in the army. I went to B.O. about 10 A.M. with Kate L. to the Lutheran L.A.S.
dinner & bazaar. I helped in the kitchen. Large crowd out. They had a dandy
dinner. We got home about 5. Dean hauled manure. The boys & I went to B.O.
in eve. I went up to mama's awhile. Aunt Till, Lawrence, Olive & Marvin
were there too. The Wernett girls are here & the boys went to Breezy Hill
with them roller skating. Mon & I came home about 10.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean started stacking
beans. I went to Methodist L.A.S. at the church with Gladys (for dinner.) Large
crowd & a swell dinner. We got home about 3. The boys went to B.O. a little
while in eve with the W. girls. "Happy" & Arland Arnold were
here in eve. Mama went to Davenport this noon on the bus. Aunt Eunice is sick
& she went down to be with her. The R.E.A. Inspector was here this A.M.
& we are all O.K.

Dandy nice day, but rather windy. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean
worked at the beans.

Dandy nice day, pretty warm. Arthur worked at the crusher this A.M. Mon, Dean
& I shut up the sows this A.M. early & Mon sold them to Lloyd. He went
with the truck & rode back from B.O. with Mart L. & Gilbert T. Loyal
rode his bike down in A.M. & stayed for dinner. He went to Decorah with
us in P.M. Large crowd in town. Loyal went home as soon as we got back from
Decorah. We went up town in eve. Got home about 11. Howard Q. rode home with
us. I got a letter from mama today. The 9 sows weighed 3000 lbs. @ $5.30 per
cwt. so bro't $159.00. The trucking was $1.75 so we got $158.25. Mrs.
Parchman & her daughter & Isa were here awhile in A.M.

Dandy nice day. The boys went away early in A.M. & didn't get back
until quite late in P.M. Dean went hunting with "Wimpie" & the
kids & Arthur went riding. Mon & I were alone all day. Brayton W. was
here a few minutes in eve.

Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean stacked
beans. I washed & ironed. The men were here in P.M. & put in our meter
& hooked us up to the power so we have lights. It sure seems good. Alberta,
Josie & Alyse Wicks came down in P.M. too see our lights. Mon, Dean &
I went up town awhile in eve.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean finished stacking
beans today. Mon & I went over to Marion's a little while in eve.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean cleaned out the
calf pen & hauled in some straw. I patched most of the day.

Dandy nice day. Arthur worked at the crusher. Dean helped shred at Harry Q's.
Joe Kuhn ground feed here in A.M. The boys were here early in A.M. too put the
bulb & fuse in our yard light but they didn't have any ladder along
& ours wasn't long enough so they couldn't fix it. Richard B.
was here & spent the eve.
Fri. Oct. 25
Dandy nice day. Mon took Arthur to his work early in A.M. after he finished
his chores he went over & got Marion & we went to Decorah. I got my
hair fixed. We got back here about 2 & had dinner & then went over to
Frank Knox's. Mon wanted too see John Freidhof who is wiring over there.
We stopped in B.O. a little while on our way home. Took Marion home then. Mon
& I went over after Arthur about 5. Stopped at Florence's too see
Aunt Alice. She is there quite sick. John F. came & fixed our yard light
about 5:30 so we have a light out side now. Little daughter born to Violet &
Louie U. this P.M.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Arthur didn't have to work at all today. John
Blaess came up this A.M. & bro't a new electric pumping outfit, that
Mon had ordered, & installed it. Sure works slick. Mon, Arthur & I went
to B.O. about 1:30. The Club had their annual oyster supper at the Hall tonite.
Elsie, Miriam & I cooked oysters again. Large crowd out. They had a good
supper. The boys went to Decorah in eve so we had to wait until they got back
too come home. Got home about 12. Dean went out to Matter's so he didn't
come home with us.
Sun. Oct. 27
Grand day. Pretty warm. Around 75º at noon. Dean went hunting in A.M. &
again in P.M. with Arthur & Loretta. Arthur went fishing & got quite
a few fish.
Mon. Oct. 28
Not very nice day. Cooler. Started to rain about 10:30 & kept it up off
& on all P.M. & nite too I guess. Rained real hard some times in P.M.
Arthur went to work but didn't work very much. He took a tire to Decorah
early in A.M. to be vulcanized & had to go back after it in P.M. He got
home about 6. Mon & Dean got a jag of corn in A.M. They came in when it
started to rain.

Not very nice in A.M. Sprinkled a few times but cleared off & was nice in
P.M. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon & Dean husked a load of corn in P.M.
Today was the big day at Washington D.C. Drawing the numbers for the boys, who
were conscripted, who will go to training camps.

of the day. I washed & ironed. The men went up town in eve. Lester, Isa

at the crusher. Mon & Dean husked corn. I patched in P.M. Ole A. started

Nice day but cooler & quite windy. Arthur worked at the crusher. Mon &
Dean husked corn. Ole was down & plowed all day. He went home about 5. Got
much colder in the nite & the wind blew pretty hard.

Election Day. Rained off & on all day. Cold & windy. Sun shone a little
in A.M. but not in P.M. Arthur didn't go to work. He took Mon to B.O.
a little after 7 for Mon too be on the Election board. Clifford D. was here
awhile in A.M. & then the boys went to Bluffton with him. They got back
home about noon. We went over to Florence's too see Aunt Alice after dinner.
She is not very well. Went up town to vote. Quite a few in town. Marion rode
home with us. Dean went to Bluffton awhile in P.M. with Wimpie. He got back
in time for chores. Pretty cold nite. Froze the ground some.

& ironed. Mon got home about 10 A.M. Ole & Gladys bro't him home.
He lost his job as trustee to Anton McCabe. Roosevelt won against Wilkie. Pretty

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. We
went to Decorah about 11 A.M. Very large crowd in town. I got my hair fixed
& Arthur got his hair cut. We went up town awhile in eve. Rained most of
the nite I guess. Arlin F. was here awhile in eve & Arthur rode up town
with him & rode home with us. Ludwig & Clyde rode home with us too.

Not very nice day. Rained in A.M. & again in eve & nite. Didn't
do much of anything. The three Wernett boys were here for supper & then
in eve all the boys went to Breezy Hill roller skating. It was raining hard
when they got back here so the W. boys stayed all nite. Walt came in the house
& slept & Chas. & Roy slept in the car.
Mon. Nov. 11
Quite warm early in A.M. & it sure rained awhile in A.M. Let up raining
about 10 A.M. & then it started to snow about 12. Kept it up off & on
all P.M. Got to be a regular blizzard in P.M. Got much colder & the wind
blew so hard. Kept up a continual rattle around here during the nite. Blew a
pane of glass out of the north kitchen window & the boys had to get up &
dress & go & get a storm window & put on. Mon was sick. Lester,
Isa & Harlan were here for dinner. Mon & the boys filled in the cellar
way & hauled up a jag of wood. Walt W. stayed for breakfast & until
about 10 A.M. The storm today was about the worst storm in history.
Tues. Nov. 12
Zero this morn. Cold windy day. Sun shone most of the day though. Snow blew
some. Wind went down at nite. Arthur & Dean went to B.O. in P.M. & Arthur
went on to Prosper & got a wheelbarrow. Mon feels better today. Arthur &
Howard W. were here a little while in P.M. Cold nite.
Wed. Nov. 13
A little below zero this morn. Nice day but cold. Warmed up some during the
day. Mon & Arthur went to B.O. about 9:30 in A.M. too get the brakes on
the car thawed out. They didn't get home until about 5. Jim Murdock came
& got some chickens in P.M. 60 young roosters at 9¢ per lb. They weighed
189 lbs. 3 old roosters & 1 hen at 7¢ per lb. weighed 16 lbs. They
bro't $18.13. Pearl was here awhile in A.M. Arthur felt real bad after
he got home from town & all nite I guess. Stella Halse & Pauline &
Muriel T. came over in eve & we planned the menu for the M.E.L.A.S. dinner
for the sale.
Thurs. Nov. 14
4º below this morn. Dandy nice day but cool. We got up early & Mon
& I left here about 8 A.M. & went up & got Isa & left for Davenport.
We stopped at Dubuque & had a lunch & then stopped at Maquoketa a little
while & got down to Aunt Eunice's about 2:30. They were glad too see
us. Earl's & Ella & Bill were there in eve. Also Will Delay. He
bro't his violin so we had some music. Uncle Albert on the bass voil Sonny
on the drums & I at the piano. Got to bed about 9:30.
Fri. Nov. 15
Nice day. Warmer. Sun didn't shine all day. Mon took us all down to Ruth's
early in A.M. & then we came back up to Ella's & got her &
went over into Rock Island over the new bridge & then back to Davenport.
Mon let us out & then he & Sonny went riding & we women folks went
shopping. I got a new winter coat & hat, gloves & everyday dresses &
some other things. We walked back up to Aunt Eunice's about 2 & had
lunch & then Mon took Aunt E., Ella, Isa & I up too buy their groceries
& then we took Ella home. Earl was up for supper. Ella & Bill were there
in eve. We played cards awhile. Got to bed about 10.
Sat. Nov. 16
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. We left Aunt Eunice's about 7:30 A.M. Mama
came home with us. Isa stopped in Dubuque too see the lady she roomed with when
she lived there & Mama stopped at Mrs. Shortell's a little while.
We stopped at Decorah a few minutes & got to B.O. about 1:15. We came right
on home. The boys had gone to Decorah with Arlin. We all went to B.O. in eve.
The boys & I went up to mama's awhile. Olive, Wimpie & Marvin
were there too. Had lots of fun with Jerome. We got home about 12. Howard &
Allen rode home with us.

Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a lot. Arlin came while we were eating breakfast
& as soon as the boys finished their chores. They went hunting pheasants.
They got back here about 1 but didn't get any birds. Arlin stayed until
about 4. Mon went over to Marions in A.M. & got back about 2. Roscoe D.
came about 5:30 & stayed until they finished chores & then the boys
went home with him & had pheasant.

Dandy nice day only rather windy. Thawed a lot. Mon went up town early in A.M.
They husked corn all day. I washed & did part of the ironing.
Tues. Nov. 19
Not very nice day. Rained off & on in A.M. Sometimes quite hard. The men
husked corn. I went out in A.M. & drove the team across the field for them
to open a new land. They quit in A.M. about 2 & then Mon & Dean went
to B.O. Dean got a hair cut. Marion came home with them. He, Dean & I culled
out the hens after supper. Walt Rehwinkel & hired man, Fritz's &
Roy Halse's were here in eve & played cards. The men had a big time.
They went home about 2.

Dandy nice day. The men husked corn. Jim M. came at noon & got the old hens.
Sold 75. They weighed 259 lbs. at .7 per lb. & brot $18.13.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & some times quite hard.
Didn't do much of anything. Arthur walked over to Marion's in P.M.
& traded guns with him.

right after dinner. Mon went up town. We moved the pullets over to the hen house

Quite a nice day but cold. We went to B.O. about 10:30. The M.E.L.A.S. had their
Dinner & Sale today. Muriel T., Stella H. & I were on the menu com.
Stella was sick & couldn't be there so it was up to Muriel & I.
Had a good crowd & plenty to eat. I helped Zoa clerk the sale in P.M. Not
so many things as usual too sell but they sold good. Made about 112 for the
day. Not too bad. Charlie, Mrs & Ruth W. were here awhile in A.M. Arthur
went to Mabel in P.M. to Dr. Nass. He has a ring worm on his arm.
Fri. Dec. 6
Quite a nice day. Thawed a lot. I washed & ironed used my new electric iron.
It worked fine. Mon & Dean went to B.O. in A.M. & then went over &
got Marion. He was here for dinner. They butchered a pig in P.M. Dean went over
to Howard's in eve. Roy McCauley bro't us a turkey tonite, that
Mon had bought of Tommy Knox. It weighed 20 lbs. @ .15¢ per lb. $3.00

Not such a nice day in A.M. but cleared off & wasn't so bad in P.M.
but cold. We went to Decorah about 11:30. Maxine went with us. Took our meat
down to Wepler's & had it cut up. Left the side meat & hams there
to be cured, bro't the rest home. Large crowd in town. We got home about
4:30. Went up town in eve. Went up to mama's a minute & then she went
down town with us. Not many in town. We got home about 11. John Freidhof was
here while we were in Decorah & finished fixing the line to pump with. He
bro't the motor for the washing machine too.

Cold, dark day. We went over to Marion's about 10:30 & got him &
then picked up Ludwig & we all went to Decorah. Very large crowd in town.
I got my hair fixed. Got home about 5. Ludwig was pretty well "stewed".
Marion came home with us to supper. We all went up town in eve except Arthur.
We took Marion home. Clyde & Howard rode home with us too.

Snowed all day until about 4 P.M. & it started to rain & kept it up
the rest of the P.M. & eve. Wind blew quite hard & it drifted some.

Not very nice day. Snowed & rained & did a little of everything. Quite
a lot of snow fell. Didn't do too much. Herb Pierce was buried at B.O.

Not cold but not a nice day. The men had the team hitched up & dragged down
some of the snow & hauled up some wood.

Dark day again. Quite warm. Thawed some. The men went to B.O. in P.M. Not very
good roads. Too much snow. Eddie Ottaway was married this A.M. at B.O. He married
Lucile Kirk or at least that used to be her name.

Not such a nice day. Dark but not cold. Snowed very hard for awhile in A.M.
early. Such great big flakes. Mon went up & got mama in A.M. & she helped
me. Arlin was here for dinner. The men helped Howard saw wood in P.M. awhile.
Mon sold a couple of heifers to Arlin today & he sent a truck over &
got them about 6 P.M. We took mama home in eve. Mon got $100.00 for the heifers.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Thawed quite a little. Chas. & Roy W. came up
in A.M. & butchered a steer for us. Arlin was here awhile in A.M. He bro't
a sled over for us that he had bought from John Fisher. Pearl was here a while
in A.M. Baby has pneumonia. I had Club in P.M. Not many out. Election of officers.

then up & got mama & went to Decorah. Very large crowd in town. Saw
Olive & Marvin & Marvin & I walked down to the Hospital. We went
too see Carsten Christopher who is very bad from an appendicitis operation;
Dorothy Seelye & Freddie he is sick with a bad cold & Milo Good who
got so badly cut in a wood saw. We went up town in eve. Clyde rode up with us.
Arthur & I went up to mama's a few minutes. We got home about 11:30.

Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. The boys went down to Roscoe's
& spent the day. Mon & I were alone all day. Pearl was here a few minutes

Not very nice day. Damp & dark not cold though but quite a strong south
wind. Mon & Arthur hauled up cord wood in A.M. & one load after dinner.
They hauled out manure in P.M. & a jag of wood too burn. Loyal came down
about 1 P.M. We dressed our turkey this P.M. He weighed 13 lbs. after he was
dressed. Charley & Mrs. W. were here awhile in eve. They bought the old
motor of our washing machine. Pearl was here awhile early in A.M. Baby is better.
We had another little calf tonite. A heifer.
Tues. Dec. 24
Quite a nice day. Lots of the snow went today. Warm & bright. Mon went up
& got mama early in A.M. & she helped me. We washed & ironed &
I made candy. The men finished hauling up the cord wood. We took mama home in
eve & I went to the M.E. church Xmas program. It was very good & a very
large crowd out. We got home about 11.

Not very nice day. Warm but damp & muggy & dark. Mon went up early &
got mama & Lester's came down too for dinner. Paul & Marie were
up from Iowa City for the day & they came over here awhile in A.M. Marvin
& Marion were along too. We had turkey for dinner & it was very nice.
The folks went home about 4. Mama rode home with them. We went over to Roy's
in eve. Had a good time playing cards & a dandy lunch. Maxine & Arlin
were there too. Got home about 1.

Not very nice day. Mon, Arthur, Loyal & I went to Decorah about 10 A.M.
Arthur went down too renew his chauffers license. We got home a little after
12. The boys cleaned the hen house in P.M. Got colder at nite & froze some.

Not very nice day. Dark & cool. We went to B.O. a little after 12. Took
Arthur & Dean over to Marion's too cut wood on our way up & went
& got them on our way home. Loyal went home. I went up to mama's a
few minutes. Isa's birthday & she & Harlan, Mr. & Mrs. Kess,
Charlotte & Jerome had dinner with mama. I went up to Parchman's to
a meeting of the new officers of the M.E.L.A.S.

Not very nice day. Dark. Snowed a little in A.M. Not cold. The boys went over
to Marion's in A.M. too chop wood & then Marion came over for dinner
with them. Mon went back with them in P.M. & Marion came home to supper

Friedhof was here awhile in A.M.
Sun. Dec. 29
Not very nice day. Dark but not cold. Dean went hunting. We didn't do
much of anything.
Mon. Dec. 30
Another dark day but it didn't storm. Mon took the boys over to Marion's
early in A.M. too cut wood but Marion didn't feel good so they came home.
Mon & I went to Decorah. Got down there about 11:10. I went up to Mabel's
& got a permanent. Got out of there at 2:45. We came home then went to B.O.
first. Ludwig rode down & back with us. Paul Thompson rode up from Decorah
with us too. We got home about 4. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Tues. Dec. 31
Not very nice day. Warm. Snowed quite hard for a while in A.M. Rained &
snowed off & on all day. Didn't do too much. We went up town in eve.
I went up to the Lutheran church. They had an oyster supper in the basement.
Stayed awhile afterward & played games. We got home about 10:30.
