Sun. Jan. 1
Dandy nice day. Lester's & mama & Claude's came & spent the day. They bro't their dinners. Had a good time. The boys went to the creek skating in P.M. Mon was a pall bearer for Ted Kimber's funeral so he had to go before dinner. The funeral was at the Funeral Home at Decorah at 1 & then to the M.E. Church at B.O. Mon got home about 3. Howard was over awhile early in eve & Richard & Leonard were here awhile later.

Mon. Jan. 2
Nice day. I washed & ironed some. Mon took Grace Blaess to Decorah in P.M. The boys cut wood. Dave was here awhile in A.M. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve. They had a farewell party for Rev. Prust's at the Hall. They are going to Wisconsin to live. There was a large crowd out. We got home about 11:45. Marion rode home with us.

Tues. Jan. 3
Not very nice day. Cloudy & dark. Mon went to Canton early in A.M. Marion went along with him. They got back here in time for dinner. Marion went home about 3:30. Mon & Arthur went up town in eve to a euchre party at Gene McCabe's.

Wed. Jan. 4
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Mon & I took Mama to Mabel in A.M. I left my teeth with Dr. Peterson too get them fixed. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Thurs. Jan. 5
Not very nice day. Some colder in P.M. Started to freeze about 4 P.M. Mon traded a heifer to Richard B. for some soy beans & hay & Leonard & the boys took her up there in A.M. They went on over to Gust's & got his boar & bro't him down here. We went up town in P.M. Mama is going down to Aunt Lissa's too stay for awhile & we took her down there on our way home. The men folks went back to B.O. in eve too Lodge. Fritz went along too. Had another little calf tonite.

Fri. Jan. 6
Quite a nice day. Mon & Arthur went up to Richard's in A.M. & got a load of soy bean hay. Mon took me to Club at Hazel Bucknell's in P.M. Gladys A. & Ruth G. went along. Quite a few out. New officers took office today. Had a dandy lunch. Got home about 5.

Sat. Jan. 7
Not such a nice day. Rather cool. We went over & got Marion about 11:30 & went to Decorah. Very large crowd in town. Saw Ruth & Francis. Stopped too see mama a minute on our way home. Went to B.O. a little while too. Dean went over to Howards in eve.

Sun. Jan. 8
Beautiful day. We went down to Ruth & Francis' & spent the day. Mama went along too. Had a swell dinner. Goose & all good things. Larry & Mrs. Keefe came just as we were finishing dinner. Larry & Francis went to Arlington. We got home about 5:30. Arthur went to Decorah to the show in eve.

Mon. Jan. 9
Not very nice day. The sun shone only a little while. Clouded up in P.M. & rained quite hard. The boys cleaned the calf pen, hen house & brooder house. Mon went up town in P.M.

Tues. Jan. 10
Sun shone most of A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & was not very nice. Mon & Arthur hauled up wood in A.M. & the boys cut wood in P.M. Marion was here for dinner. Mon & Marion went to Decorah in eve to Lodge. Dean went over to Howards in eve.

Wed. Jan. 11
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The boys hauled up wood in A.M. & Mon & Arthur hauled up in P.M. & Dean cut wood. Snowed a little in the nite.

Thurs. Jan. 12
Rather dark, cloudy day but not cold. Mon went to B.O. in A.M. early & was gone until noon. The boys finished hauling up the wood. Lester Bronner came over in P.M. & sawed it. Marion & Howard helped saw it. Only took a couple of hours. We had a lunch when they got thro'. Mon & the boys went to Mabel in eve to the euchre tournament. B.O. won. They didn't get home until after 2. Snowed in the nite.

Fri. Jan. 13
Snowed off & on all day. Not cold though. Clem Brace was here in A.M. & ground feed. Philip S. dehorned the calves in P.M. Dave was over awhile in P.M. We went to Bluffton to do some trading about 4 & he went along too.

Sat. Jan. 14
Not such a nice day. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah about 11:30. Marion rode down with us from B.O. Quite a crowd in town. The boys went to B.O. in eve. Vyra Dawley & Victor Masters were married today.

Sun. Jan. 15
Not very nice day. Snowed off & on all day. Arthur went to Decorah to the show in P.M. with Ronald Webb. Dean went over to Blaess'. Mon took me down to Aunt Lissa's awhile in P.M. Aunt Till & Marie were there too. Pretty cold nite.

Mon. Jan. 16
Dandy day. We went up town in A.M. & came home about 4:30. I spent the day at Isa's. Mon, Dean, Lester, Isa & I went to Decorah to the show in eve. Thanks For the Memories. It was sure good. We got home about 12. Pretty cold nite again.

Tues. Jan. 17
Not very nice day. Not so cold. Snowed most of the day. Not hard but just enough to be snowing. Snowed quite a little in the nite. The boys cut wood in P.M.

Wed. Jan. 18
Not too bad a day. Snowed a little in P.M. I washed. Ironed a little in P.M.

Thurs. Jan. 19
Not such a nice day but not cold. The boys cut wood. Mon helped them in P.M. I finished ironing in P.M. Had another little calf tonite.

Fri. Jan. 20
Rather nice part of the day. The sun shone some times & it was quite warm. The boys cut wood in P.M. Mon took me to Club at Gerthrude's in P.M. Large crowd out. Had a swell lunch. Happy, Audry & Delores were over & spent the eve. The men went to Bluffton awhile to a Rural Electricification meeting.

Sat. Jan. 21
Very nice in A.M. quite warm, but the wind came up about 3 P.M. & it blew hard from the N.W. & got much colder. Regular blizzard at times. We went to Decorah about 11. Marion went with us. Quite a crowd in town. Saw Ruth & was with her awhile. The boys & I got Mon a smoking stand for his birthday. We got home about 4:30. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Mighty cold, windy nite. Wind blew terribly hard in eve & early part of the nite. Norma Haugen & Howard Masters were married today.

Sun. Jan. 22
10º below this A.M. early. Warmed up quite a lot during the day. It was around 30º above at noon. Dandy day. Ruth, Francis & Uncle Dan F. came up & spent the day. Marion was over too. The boys went to Decorah to the show in eve. We were invited to Joe & Iona's wedding anniversary in eve but didn't go.

Mon. Jan. 23
Rather cloudy in A.M. Started to snow very hard about 2:30 P.M. & it sure did snow hard the rest of the P.M. Mon, Dean & I went down & got Mama about 11 A.M. & went to B.O. Had dinner with Isa & then went up home in P.M. Howard & Charlotte McCabe came up & looked at the house. They are going to move up there & have part of the house. We came home about 2:30.

Tues. Jan. 24
Mon's 44th Birthday. Not very nice day. Regular blizzard most of the day. Sun shone most of the day though & it wasn't so cold. Not so blustery late in P.M. Mon went over to Martin Jaarstad's in A.M. to saw wood but they didn't saw. I went over to Howard's a few minutes in A.M. The men spent most of the day shelling popcorn. Mon went up after the mail late in P.M. Dean didn't feel very good today.

Wed. Jan. 25
Not very nice day. Snowed & blowed most of the day. Regular blizzard at times. Mon & Arthur helped Martin J. saw wood most of the day. Dean doesn't feel very good but helps with the chores. We listened to the John Henry Lewis Joe Louis fight in eve. Joe won on a technical knockout in 2 min. 29 sec. Not much of a fight.

Thurs. Jan. 26
Very nice in A.M. but the wind blew quite hard in P.M. & it drifted quite a little. Mon & I went & got mama about 10:30 & we went up home & built fires & changed things around. Howard & Charlotte moved in there today. They have the sitting room & bed room & one room upstairs. Mama kept the dining room & kitchen. We took her back to Aunt Lissa's about 3. Mon & Arthur went to B.O. in eve & then on to Prosper to a euchre tournament. Dean didn't feel well enough too go.

Fri. Jan. 27
Dandy day. Wind started to blow late in P.M. though & it drifted the most of the nite I guess. Dean has the measles. He isn't broke out much though. Mon took Lizzie, Ruth & I up to Doris Blaess's in P.M. We had a shower for her. There were 10 of us there. Had a nice lunch too. Mon & I went to Breezy Hill in eve to a shower for Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Gilbertson & Mr. & Mrs. Howard Masters. Quite a crowd out. They got nice presents. Had a good time too. We got stuck in the snow coming home just after we turned the corner off the paving at Merle's. Happy, Clifford Mc. & I pushed until we got out. Got home about 2.

Sat. Jan. 28
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Dean is sure broke out with the measles. He doesn't feel very good. Arthur isn't so good either. Mon & I went to Bluffton a little while in P.M. Mart L. rode down from his place with us.

Sun. Jan. 29
Dandy nice day. Neither of the boys feel very good. They both have the measles now & Dean sure is broke out. Face swollen so he can hardly see. Howard was here awhile in P.M. Didn't do much of anything. Helped Mon feed calves & do a few things.

Mon. Jan. 30
Dandy day. Arthur doesn't feel very good. Dean is a little better. I washed & ironed some. Mon went to B.O. awhile in P.M.

Tues. Jan. 31
Dandy day. Both the boys are better today. I finished the ironing today. Dean helped milk tonite. Little daughter born to Beathe & Norman Eddy tonite.

Wed. Feb. 1
Regular blizzard in A.M. but not cold. Cleared off in P.M. & was nice. Got somewhat colder in the nite. Didn't do much of anything. Arthur helped milk tonite for the first time since he was sick. They both feel pretty good now.

Thurs. Feb. 2
Nice day, but quite a lot colder. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed. Fritz rode home with us from Decorah to B.O. His car was there. Mon & Fritz went to Mabel in eve to a euchre tournament. Mabel won for the first time. Mon didn't get home until after 3.

Fri. Feb. 3
Nice day but cool. Mon took Gladys, Dorothy S. & I to Club at Florence E's in P.M. Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy lunch. Got stuck three times in the snow going & coming. Ole went along too.

Sat. Feb. 4
Nice day. Some warmer. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in P.M. I went up to visit Mrs. Lovlien. Pearl was over a few minutes about supper time. Howard & Darlene have the measles now.

Sun. Feb. 5
Dandy nice warm day. Thawed quite a lot. Arthur & I went with Lizzie & Maxine in P.M. down to Roy's. We stayed there awhile & then came back & stopped at Aunt Lissa's a little while. Maxine stayed at Roy's & Arthur drove the car home. Ellis Brode died this P.M. at the Decorah Hospital.

Mon. Feb. 6
Didn't look very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. I washed & ironed some. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. He was put in as one of the township trustees & they had their first meeting of the year this P.M. The boys cleaned the calf pen & hen house today.

Tues. Feb. 7
Quite a nice day but pretty cool. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. Marion came home to dinner with Mon. We all went to B.O. in P.M. Ellis Brode was buried this P.M. They had the service at Decorah. I didn't go up to the cemetry it was so cold but Mon & Marion went. I went over to Eva's a little while in P.M. Saw Carrie Brode Manning a minute. Snowed some in the nite.

Wed. Feb. 8
My 47th Birthday. Pretty cold day but bright. Didn't do much of anything. Dean was over to Howard's awhile in A.M. & P.M. Harry Q. was here a few minutes in P.M.

Thurs. Feb. 9
Not very nice day. Rather a blizzard but not very cold. Didn't do much of anything. The men went to B.O. in eve. Arthur went on over to Walt's & spent the eve. Got pretty cold late in the nite.

Fri. Feb. 10
8º below this A.M. early & the wind & snow blowing pretty hard. Blowed hard all day & nite. Sun shone some though. We went to Bluffton in P.M. & did some trading. No snow in the road to bother.

Sat. Feb. 11
Dandy day. 20º below early in A.M. but warmed up quite a little. We went to Decorah about 1 P.M. Mama went along too. Quite a crowd in town. Saw Ruth & visited with her awhile.

Sun. Feb. 12
Dandy day. Thawed a quite a lot. Dean was over to Howard's awhile in A.M. Arthur went to B.O. a little while with Dale Arnold in P.M. We went to Decorah in eve to the show. "Artists Model's Abroad". It was sure good.

Mon. Feb. 13
Dandy nice warm day, thawed a lot until about 4 P.M. It got pretty cool & was a cool nite. Looked rather stormy but didn't. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur got the last jag of beans from Richard's in A.M. The men worked in the woods in P.M.

Tues. Feb. 14
Quite a nice day. Got quite a lot colder in the eve & nite. Arthur drove Dave's car to Decorah for them this A.M. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in P.M. I went up to Isa's. We all went up to Ole's & spent the eve. Marion was there too. We took him home. Got home about 12. Snowed a little in eve.

Wed. Feb. 15
10º below this A.M. Quite a lot colder day but quite bright. The men cut wood in P.M.

Thurs. Feb. 16
Not very nice day. Rather stormy but not so cold. Arthur helped Ole all day. Mon & the boys & Fritz went to B.O. in eve to play cards.

Fri. Feb. 17
Quite a nice day but cool. Arthur helped Ole again today. Clem Brace was here & ground feed in A.M.

Sat. Feb. 18
Dandy nice warm day. Thawed a lot. We went to Decorah about 10:30. Marion went along too. Arthur went to B.O. Large crowd in town. I went up & got my hair fixed. We got home about 5. Pearl was over in A.M. We went over to Howard's in eve to a party for Blaess's. Quite a few of the neighbors there. Got home about 1:30. Danced & played cards. Rained some in the nite.

Sun. Feb. 19
Pretty slippery & icy around. Not very nice day but not cold until about 4:30 P.M. the wind changed & it got pretty cold & windy. We went down to Claude's & spent the day. Olive's Birthday. Mama & Aunt Lissa, Lester's & Dell's were there too. Had a picnic dinner & a good one. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Mon. Feb. 20
5º below this A.M. & cold & windy. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. about 10:30. Stopped at Ole's & took Gladys coffee boiler & cream. Mon took me to Roy Wanless's to their sale. The Club served lunch. We served in the garage. It wasn't too warm in there either but we didn't freeze. Didn't sell as much as we thought we would. There were too many sales the same day & to close together.

Tues. Feb. 21
8º below this A.M. early. Another cold windy day. Didn't do much of anything. Howard, Pearl & Darlene were here awhile in A.M. Mon & Ole went to Decorah in P.M. They met with the supervisors too see about roads. Mon, the boys, Fritz & Ole went to Harmony in eve to a euchre tournament. Little daughter born to Richard & Doris at the Hospital at Decorah this noon.

Wed. Feb. 22
8º below this A.M. early. Cold day again. Didn't do much of anything. Mon, Dean & I went over to Dave's & spent the eve. Geo Mc.'s birthday. He is staying with Dave's this winter.

Thurs. Feb. 23
Not quite so cold today, but quite a blizzard at times. Sun shone part of the time too. Mon & the boys cut wood in P.M.

Fri. Feb. 24
Cold again today but bright. Mon went to B.O. early in A.M. & was up there all day getting the car fixed. The boys cut wood in P.M. Mrs. Cady Potter died this P.M.

Sat. Feb. 25
Dandy nice day. Not so cold. We went to Decorah about 11:30. I got my hair fixed again today. It didn't stay last week. Went up to Lou Emmon's in P.M. too see Doris & the baby. They bro't them to her house this P.M. to stay a few days. The baby is sure nice. We went over to Fred's in eve to a party. Quite a few out. Had a good time. Got home about 3. Maxine went with us. Howard was here awhile in A.M.

Sun. Feb. 26
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Dean went down to the creek skating in P.M. & Arthur went to B.O. awhile. Fred W. was over & spent the eve.

Mon. Feb. 27
Very nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up. Started to snow about 8 P.M. & kept it up the rest of the nite. Turned into a blizzard during the nite. Mon helped Fred W. saw wood until about 4 P.M. I washed & did part of the ironing. The boys worked in the woods in P.M. Arthur W. was here in eve. Mrs. Cady Potter was buried this P.M.

Tues. Feb. 28
Worst blizzard we have had this winter, but not cold. The sun shone some in P.M. & the snow quite blowing-drifting late in P.M. Dean went over to Howards in A.M. & again in eve. Lots of snow around here in some places.

Wed. Mar. 1
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a lot. We went to B.O. in P.M. Only a few places in the road where there was any snow. I went up to Isa's. Richard & Floyd B. & Gene Hellum were here awhile in eve.

Thurs. Mar. 2
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Thawed quite a lot. Mon & I went up to Richards a little after 10 & then went on to Decorah after Doris & the baby. Richard went along. We got back to Richards a little after 12. Had lunch there & then came on home. Mama wanted us to take her to B.O. in P.M. so Mon, Dean & I went down & got her & took her to B.O. We went up to Isa's a little while. Mon has a cold & don't feel too good.

Fri. Mar. 3
Nice day. Arthur & Dean took Dorothy S. & I to B.O. in P.M. & then we went to Club at Catherine Hedgvedt's with Inez W. Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy lunch. Mon took Arthur over to Walt R's. about 6 P.M. too stay awhile. Walt & Ronald W. go to Chicago tonite after a new truck for Walt. Mon doesn't feel very good. Dean helped Blaess's move a load late this P.M.

Sat. Mar. 4
Not very nice day. Looked pretty stormy but didn't storm. Dean did up his chores in a hurry this A.M. & then helped Blaess's move all day. They are moving on the Hoverson place. Mon & I went down to Decorah a little while. We had a party here in eve. Too much "flu" so not so many came. "Happy's", Marion, Fritzs', Howard's, Fred W., Chas. W., Arthur & Ruby R. Had a good time playing cards & a good lunch. We got to bed about 2. Mon feels a little better today, but not very good. Wilbur Duprez & Nels Nelson died this P.M. late.

Sun. Mar. 5
Not very nice day. Snowed & blowed quite a little. Didn't do much of anything. "Happy" & Marion were here in P.M. Arthur came home in the nite. Walt & Ronald got home about 8:30.

Mon. Mar. 6
Nice day. Thawed quite a little but the wind was cold. Mon & Dean helped Dave's move today. They are moving down on the Wernett place that Lizzie traded her place at Coldwater for. Erlin Stortz rented Dave's place.

Tues. Mar. 7
Nice day. I have quite a cold. Mon & Arthur did the washing this A.M. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. & then on to Mabel & got some coal. The boys hauled out manure & I ironed some. Mon, Dean & Fritz went to B.O. in eve & played euchre. Wilbur Duprez was buried at B.O. this P.M.

Wed. Mar. 8
Quite a nice day. The sun shone most of the day. It thawed a lot. Mon & I took mama & Aunt Lissa to Decorah a little after 12. We women went to Nels Nelson's funeral at the Burial Association. Quite a few there. They had services at the Locust church too but we didn't go out there. Manford Stead & Audry Wilbur were married today.

Thurs. Mar. 9
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Mon took me to B.O. about 10 A.M. I went up to the M.E. church & helped cook oysters for their oyster dinner. Quite a crowd out in spite of all the "flu" sickness. Had a swell dinner. Stopped at Richard's a few minutes on our way home. The boys worked in the woods in P.M.

Fri. Mar. 10
Not such a nice day. The wind was damp & cold. The men hitched up Nancy in P.M. for the first time. She didn't go so bad. They drove her with her mother & drove most of P.M. It rained some late in P.M. Chas. W. was here in A.M.

Sat. Mar. 11
Not such a nice day. Mostly cloudy & real chilly. Thawed quite a little too. We went to B.O. about 11:30 & then on to Decorah. Ole A. rode to B.O. with us & Marion went to Decorah with us. Quite a crowd in town. Saw Ruth & talked with her awhile. We got home about 4. Went over to Charley W's in eve to a party. Quite a few out but didn't have as good a time as usual. Too many young folks. Maxine went with us. Got home about 2.

Sun. Mar. 12
Nice day. Thawed a lot. Didn't do much of anything except set around. Dean was over to Howard's awhile.

Mon. Mar. 13
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Thawed a lot. Mon & Arthur hauled up wood in A.M. Mon, Arthur & I went to school election in P.M. Quite a few out. Ole A. went out & Fritz K. went in his place & Happy was elected too fill out his dads term. We went to B.O. after election was over. Dave went along with us. The road is breaking thro' in some places quite bad. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Tues. Mar. 14
Dandy day. Thawed a lot. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur hauled up wood & Dean cut wood after he got his chores done. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Howard was here awhile in P.M. Wind came up in the nite & blew quite hard & snowed some. Got colder.

Wed. Mar. 15
Quite a lot colder today & the wind blew hard all day. Regular blizzard at times. Everything froze solid. Frank Reed came down just after dinner & hauled Happy's bull home. Mon went along with him & didn't get home until about supper time.

Thurs. Mar. 16
Not very nice day. Cold & windy. Didn't do much of anything.

Fri. Mar. 17
Rather cold & windy but not quite as bad as the last two days. Sun shone some. Ralph G. bro't Pauline Lang up here at noon & Mon took her, Dorothy S. & I to Club at Maude J's. Not many out. Had a nice lunch. Dean went along to town with us.

Sat. Mar. 18
Much nicer day. Thawed some. We went to Decorah about 11:30. Large crowd in town. We got some paint & paper & are going to clean up a little. Stopped at Aunt Lissa's a minute on our way down town. Aunt Candace is there & is not at all well. Annie is there helping care for her.

Sun. Mar. 19
Dandy day. Thawed a lot. Dean went to Bluffton in P.M. a little while with Frank Gates. Arthur Abrahamson was here in P.M. awhile.

Mon. Mar. 20
Dandy day. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur hauled up wood in A.M. & Dean chopped in P.M. Mon started painting the bed room & Arthur & Dean hauled up wood. They had to haul on the wagon. Mon went to B.O. a few minutes in P.M. Thawed a lot today. They went over our road with the maintainer today.

Tues. Mar. 21
Beautiful day. Up to about 60º in P.M. Sure did thaw. Mon went to B.O. & Prosper in A.M. too get some stuff to plaster with. They plastered some places in the bedroom in P.M. & painted a little. Howard was here awhile in A.M. & P.M. Mon sold him a sow in A.M. for $20. Mon bought a pig from Tommy Knox in A.M. to butcher. Tommy bro't it down about noon. He paid $20.15 for the pig & hauling it down here. Dean doesn't feel at all well. He laid around all day. Flu I guess. Didn't freeze much tonite. The maintainer went past here again today.

Wed. Mar. 22
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Thawed a lot. Charley & Ray W. came over this A.M. & butchered a hog. Arthur S. was here in A.M. seeing about the Soil Conservation. Mon painted in P.M. Arthur worked in the woods in P.M.

Thurs. Mar. 23
Dandy day. Mighty warm. The ground dried a lot. Mon & I went to Decorah early in A.M. took the hog down & put it in the locker. Dean & I cut up the lard in P.M. Mon painted some & ground up the lard. Arthur chopped wood. Mon, Arthur & Fritz went to B.O. in eve & then Mon & Fritz went on to Prosper to a euchre tournament. Dean didn't feel like going. The thermometer got up to about 85º this P.M. Didn't freeze tonite. Lew Halse died very suddenly this A.M. about 7.

Fri. Mar. 24
Pretty warm day again. Mon went down & got mama in A.M. too help paper. Isa was down there so she came along too. Loyal walked down early in A.M. He had a tooth pulled yesterday & didn't feel like going too school. He went down to Aunt Lissa's in A.M. Pearl & Darlene came over in P.M. & we papered the bed room. Mon painted in the sitting room some in P.M. & helped us some. Howard was over a while in P.M. too. Arthur worked in the woods in A.M. & P.M. Mon took mama & Isa home about 5:30. I went up to the school house in eve with Howard's to the Declamatory Contest. Betty Palmer won the dramatic & Virginia Wilhelm the humorous. They were all good.

Sat. Mar. 25
Grand day. Mighty warm again. We went to Decorah about 11:30. Large crowd in town. Saw Ruth & talked with her awhile. Got home about 4. Did up the chores & then Fred & Ede W., Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah. Went to the show "Jesse James". It was a good show. Got home about 12. Dean went up to Ludwig's.

Dandy day but quite a little cooler & quite windy. Sure did dry up the field's & roads. Dean went fishing early in A.M. & didn't get back until about 5 P.M. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah to the show in P.M. "You Can't Cheat An Honest Man. Edgar Bergan & Charlie Mc. & W.C. Fields. It was sure funny. Ed D. was here awhile in eve. Sylvia Reed & Vet Wilbur died today.

Mon. Mar. 27
Nice day but cool. I washed & ironed. Mon painted most of the day & the boys hauled up wood. Geo. Willsie died today. Snowed some in the nite. Froze some tonite.

Tues. Mar. 28
Nice cool day. The boys finished hauling up what wood they had ready in A.M. Mon painted in A.M. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in P.M. I went to Vet Wilburs funeral. Alberta, Philip, Mrs. Smith (the new minister's wife) & I sang, "The Old Rugged Cross" & "Going Down the Valley". Not many out to the funeral. Arthur helped Harry Q. saw wood in P.M. Harry was here in A.M. Arthur went over to Walt R's about 6 P.M. to a birthday dinner & spent the eve.

Wed. Mar. 29
Not very nice day. Sun didn't shine much. Rather damp & cool. Started to snow about 2 P.M. & kept it up most of the P.M. Snowed pretty hard for awhile. The boys hauled up wood in A.M. Mon painted some in the sitting room. We took the old rug out of there & I scrubbed that floor. Richard came down in A.M. & got the organ. Mon & the boys drove Nancy in P.M.

Thurs. Mar. 30
Arthur's 22nd Birthday. Nice day. Mon painted in A.M. We went to B.O. in P.M. to Sylvia Reed's funeral. Lizzie went too. We caught up with Gladys & Ole walking too town & they rode up & back with us. Philip, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Krumm & I sang "God Will Take Care of You", "Jesus Lover of My Soul" & "Shall We Gather at the River". Very large crowd out. The boys drove Nancy today.

Fri. Mar. 31
Nice day but a cool wind. Pearl & Darlene came over in A.M. & we papered the ceiling of the sitting room. Had a big time. Howard was over for dinner. The boys worked with the wood. Mon took me to Club at Pauline Lang's in P.M. Not so many out but we had a good time & a swell lunch. I rode home with Brayton's. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve to the I.O.O.F. dance & Fritz & Ruth went along. Quite a crowd. Good music. We got home about 2. Geo. Willsie was buried at B.O. this P.M.

Nice day but cold. We went to Decorah about 11 A.M. Large crowd in town. We got our new rug today. Got home about 4 & then Mon & I & Howard's went to Bluffton.

Nice day but cool. Claude's & mama came over & spent the day.

Mon. Apr. 3
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon had an all day meeting in B.O. (The Trustee's). The boys cut posts all day. We went over to Happy's in eve.

Tues. Apr. 4
Rather cloudy most of the day. Looked pretty rainy but didn't rain. Pearl & Darlene were here & helped paper the sitting room. We finished about 3:30 then Mon & I went to Decorah & got some meat. Weren't gone long. We went up town awhile in eve. Richard B. rode home with us. Harry Q. was here in P.M. Rained some in the nite. Ed D. bro't his saw rig over in P.M. & was here for supper.

Wed. Apr. 5
Rained quite a little early in A.M. & then turned into snow. Cleared off & was a nice day but the wind was cold. We sawed wood. Got thro' about 3:30 P.M. Pearl & Darlene helped me. Mon & I went down to Aunt Lissa's about 4 P.M. & got Mama & took her back to her own home. Visited with Charlotte Mc. a little while. Froze hard tonite.

Thurs. Apr. 6
Regular blizzard at times during the day. Sun shone part of the time too. Rather cold. The boys drove Nancy some in P.M. I tore paper off the kitchen, getting it ready to paint & paper.

Fri. Apr. 7
Snowed off & on all day. Sun shone some. The wind was cold. The boys hauled manure in A.M. & drove Nancy some in P.M. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. but he wasn't home. Charley & Mrs. W. were here a couple of hrs. in A.M. Gilbert hauled over a truck load of posts that Mon had bought of them. We went to Bluffton in eve & did some trading.

Sat. Apr. 8
Nice day but cold & windy. Mon, Dean & I went up & got mama about noon & went to Decorah. Large crowd in town. Stopped in B.O. awhile on our way home. Roy W. & Marion rode home from B.O. with us. Had a flat tire when we were coming down Fritz' hill. Went up to Red's in eve to a party. Quite a few out. Harry & Nina H. & Jim Murdoc[k] came & caused a stink. Got home about 2:30. Mon went over to Marion's & also over to Howards in A.M.

Sun. Apr. 9
Quite a nice day, but cold. Didn't do much of anything. Arthur went to B.O. awhile. Dean went down to the creek in P.M. Ed D. was here in eve awhile.

Mon. Apr. 10
Looked quite rainy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. The men folks went up to Richards in A.M. & got a load of hay. The boys drove Nancy in P.M. Mon & I went up town a little while in P.M. I went up to mama's. Isa was there too.

Tues. Apr. 11
Nice bright day most of the day. Snowed some & it was quite cold & windy. Mon & Arthur spent most of the day plastering up the kitchen. Dean peeled some posts. Arthur helped him some.

Wed. Apr. 12
Nice bright day but rather windy & cold. I washed & ironed. Mon painted some in the kitchen. Arthur burned brush in A.M. & Dean split wood. Arthur went up town after dinner & got a handle in an ax & then he split wood in P.M. too. Pearl & Darlene were here awhile in P.M. Harry's dog bit Darlene's hand in A.M. & it sure didn't look very good. Lester's came just after we had supper & they waited until the men finished the chores & then Dean & I went to the Community Hall with them to one of "Little Ole's" plays & dances. Large crowd out. The show was good but had seen them put it on before. Had a good time at the dance.

Thurs. Apr. 13
Rather cloudy day. South wind & it was cool. The boys split wood in A.M. & drove Nancy in P.M. I went to Club at Iona's in P.M. with Pauline. Large crowd out. Mrs. Carl Leistikow & Mrs. Roed joined the Club today. Had a dandy lunch. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. Richard & Leonard were here awhile just after dinner. Snowed & rained in eve.

Fri. Apr. 14
Rather cool. The boys split wood some. Mon finished up what paint we had & did other jobs. One of the Henry boys went off the grade out here in front of the house about 12 o'clock & he came & woke us up & Mon went out & helped him get his car righted up & on his way.

Sat. Apr. 15
Quite a nice day. Some warmer. The sun shone most of the day. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah about 11 or rather started for Decorah & we met Lloyd K. coming down here so we came back with him while he looked at some cattle then Dean & I stayed at Mama's while Mon went to Prosper too look at a bull then we went on to Decorah. Got home about 3:30. Glen Rollin's bro't the bull down about 5 P.M. & he took 2 heifer's back that Mon traded to Lloyd K. for the bull. We went up town in eve. Fritz went with us. I went up to Mama's. Olive was there too. I stopped at Floyd Blaess' on our way home too see Grace B. She just got home from Iowa City today where she had been for an operation for goitre. Richard rode home from town with us. Dean went to Breezy Hill with Arthur W. in eve.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Didn't do much of anything. Mon didn't feel very well.

Mon. Apr. 17
Rained quite hard all day. Got colder in P.M. & started to snow late in P.M. & snowed until the ground was covered. Did odd jobs around the house. Mon has such a cold he spent most of the day in bed.

Tues. Apr. 18
Cold dark day. Mon painted some in A.M. The boys drove Nancy in P.M. Mon & I went up town awhile in P.M. I went up to Mamas. Mon feels a little better.

Wed. Apr. 19
Mama's 68th Birthday. Dandy nice day. Quite a lot warmer. Dave came over early in A.M. for Arthur to help him so Arthur was over there all day. Mon went up & got mama & she came down & spent the day with us. Mon painted all day. Dean did odd jobs. Mrs. Wernett & Ruthie came over in P.M. We took mama home in eve.

Pretty cold day. Rather windy too. Arthur started plowing in P.M. Mon painted some & did other odd jobs. Arthur helped Dave in A.M.

Windy cool day. I washed & ironed. Arthur plowed all day. Mon finished painting the kitchen.

Quite a nice day. Much warmer. Arthur plowed all day. Marion came over for dinner & then we went to Decorah in P.M. Got home about 4 P.M. We went up town in eve. Olive & I went up to mama's & spent the eve. Marvin was up there too.

Dandy nice day but pretty windy. Pretty warm too. The boys went fishing early in A.M. & didn't get back until after 5. Got a nice string of fish.

Mon. Apr. 24
Dean's 19th Birthday. Pretty warm windy day. Arthur finished plowing that piece in A.M. & dragged in P.M. Mon & Dean cleaned grain awhile in P.M. Mon & I went to B.O. about 4 P.M. Ole, Gladys, Betty & Beatrice were down & spent the eve. Decorah was the hottest town in the U.S.A. today. Over 94º.

Tues. Apr. 25
Dandy day. Pretty warm but windy. I washed & ironed. Arthur sowed oats. Dean dragged & Mon used the grass seeder sowing grass seed. Howard was here awhile in eve.

Wed. Apr. 26
Nice day but windy & the wind was cool. Arthur finished seeding tonite. Dean dragged in A.M. & Mon sowed grass seed but it was so windy in P.M. he couldn't sow, so he went to B.O. awhile. Pearl & Darlene were over in A.M. I went over there in P.M. & Pearl, Darlene, & I went down along the creek. Found lots of flowers.

Thurs. Apr. 27
Rather cloudy at times & quite cool but just sprinkled a little in A.M. Mon finished sowing the grass seed in A.M. Arthur, Dean & I worked at the lawn most of the A.M. Raking, burning grass & cleaning up the lilac bushes etc. Dean finished dragging in P.M. Mon & I papered part of the kitchen in P.M. Arthur did odd jobs. The McCormic Deering tractor man from Decorah was here in P.M. Dave was here awhile too. Ed D. was here for supper. I went over to Elsie's in eve to prepare the menu for Mother's Day. The men went up town. Pretty cool nite.

Fri. Apr. 28
Pretty cool but bright in A.M. Warmed up quite a lot in P.M. The McCormick Deering man bro't up a tractor this A.M. & plowed some. Demonstrating it. Howard was over awhile watching them plow. The man was here for dinner. Mon took me to Club at Lucile Olson's in P.M. Gladys & Dorothy went with us. Quite a few out & had a dandy lunch. We rode back to B.O. with Gerthrude. Arthur disced in P.M.

Sat. Apr. 29
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Arthur sowed oats, Mon sowed grass seed & Dean dragged in A.M. Dean disced in P.M. & the rest of us went to Decorah. Quite a crowd in town. We didn't get home until nearly 6. Went to B.O. in eve. Arthur W. was here awhile in eve & then Dean went with him. I went up to the Pavilion. The opening dance. Kelly's played. Rex W. runs the Pavilion this year & mama does the cooking. I helped her. Large crowd out. We got home about 1:35.

Dandy nice warm day. The boys went early in A.M. to wash the car & fish. They got home just in time for dinner. Roscoe D. came with them & then they went fishing again right after dinner. Ruth, Francis, Mrs. Padden, Uncle Dan & Mama came a little after 11 & were here for dinner & spent the P.M. We all went over to Marion's in P.M. but he wasn't home so we came back & went on down to Bluffton for a little ride. Cold nite. We had 9 little pigs this A.M.

Mon. May 1
Dandy nice day. I washed in A.M. Dean disced in A.M. Arthur did a lot of odd jobs. The McCormick Deering man was here awhile in A.M. Arthur disced in P.M. & Dean raked yard. Mon & I went to B.O. in P.M. The Price boys sold their Dakota land so Mon & I had too go to B.O. & sign the papers before a notary public. Mon took me over to Inez W's in eve too practice for Mother's Day. He went on to B.O. We got home about 11. Pretty cold nite.

Tues. May 2
Dandy nice day. Arthur & Dean took turns discing. Mon went up town early in A.M. too get the car greased & overhauled. He got home about 4:30 P.M. He bought a new lawn mower today.

Wed. May 3
Dandy nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & sprinkled some off & on the rest of the eve & some in the nite. Mon, Dean & I finished papering the kitchen this A.M. Arthur plowed. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve. The "Womens Chorus" of the Farm Bureau from Decorah put on a program at the Hall & I went to that. It sure was good. Pearl & Darlene were here a little while in P.M. We had 20 more little pigs today from 2 sows.

Thurs. May 4
Dandy nice day. Warmer. The boys hauled out manure & cleaned out the cellar way in A.M. & in P.M. Arthur plowed & Dean did other things. I went over to Pearls in P.M. Grace is there. Mon & Arthur took me to Inez's to practice in eve & then they went on to B.O. Dean went hanging May baskets.

Fri. May 5
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Arthur plowed. Mon went fishing in P.M. Got 4 small ones.

Sat. May 6
Pretty windy warm day. Arthur plowed until about 2:30 he finished. Mon & I went to Decorah early in A.M. too do some trading. We all went to B.O. about 3:30 P.M. too see the Prince & Princess of Norway go thro' on their way to Decorah. They will be in Decorah until tomorrow P.M. & then back to Northfield Minn. Quite an honor for Decorah. There were quite a few in B.O. too see them as they went thro' there. We went over to Charley W's. in eve to a party (Roy's birthday). Not so many out but they had a good time. I had to play the organ most of the nite so it wasn't so much fun for me. Got home about 2. Sprinkled a little in P.M. 9 more little pigs tonite.

Sun. May 7
Nice day. Somewhat cooler. The boys went fishing in A.M. & to Decorah to the show in P.M. They said there was an enormous crowd in town.

Mon. May 8
Nice day. A little cooler. Arthur disced & dragged today. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. He took Pauline & I to B.O. in eve to practice. Billy bro't Pauline up here & we took her home. I went up to mama's a minute. Dean doesn't feel very good today.

Tues. May 9
Quite nice in A.M. but got pretty windy & the dust blew pretty bad in P.M. I washed & ironed. Arthur disced. Dean feels a little better. Mon went over to Marions early in A.M. he is sick too just like Dean. Mon took me up town to practice in eve. Pearl & Darlene were here a couple of times today. Gilbert hauled the rest of our posts over this P.M. We had 8 more little pigs tonite.

Wed. May 10
Nice bright day but pretty cool & windy. Dust bad again today. Arthur disced all day. Mon went over to Marion's early in A.M. & Marion came home with him & stayed until about 3. Mon took him home then. He feels a little better, but he sure doesn't look very well. Dean feels pretty good today. Howard was over a few minutes in eve.

Thurs. May 11
Dandy nice day but the wind was cool. Arthur disced & dragged. Mon took me to Decorah in P.M. & I got a permanent. One of the machineless ones. Mama went down town with us & then she came home for supper with us & the boys & I took her up town in eve. I went to practice. Mighty cold in the hall. Cold nite. Frost in some places.

Fri. May 12
Nice day but cold & windy. Arthur dragged. Marion came along here from Fred W's. after dinner & stayed awhile & then Mon took him home. Sid & Sue came about 3:30 & stayed for supper & until about 7.

Sat. May 13
Quite a nice day. Somewhat warmer. Arthur planted corn. Mon took me to B.O. at noon. The Joan of Arc entertained the Mothers of the community at the Hall in P.M. Olive & I sang "You're the Only Star In My Blue Heaven", & 15 of us girls gave a one act play. "Wanted – a Mother". We surely had a large crowd, the largest we have ever had. We got home in time for chores & then Mon, Dean & I went back to B.O. in eve. I went up to the Pavilion & helped mama. We got home about 11:40.

Sun. May 14
Quite a nice day but cooler. We went up home for the day. Claude & Lester's were there too. Had a picnic dinner & a good one too. Arthur, Dean & Leonard went fishing in P.M. but didn't get anything. They went again in the evening & got some bullheads.

Mon. May 15
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Arthur finished planting that one piece of corn. Dean dragged all day. Mon went over to Arthur Smiths in A.M. Arthur came over in eve & measured one piece of ground for us.

Tues. May 16
Nice day but pretty windy & dusty. The boys peeled posts in A.M. & started fixing fence in P.M. Mrs. Wernett in the children were here awhile in P.M. Mon didn't feel very well. He went over to Marion's a minute late in P.M. We had our last little pigs today. This makes us 78. Cramer's started working on the road past Harry Q's today. They are grading that road up for gravel.

Wed. May 17
Quite a nice day but windy & cool. Marion came over early in A.M. & he, Arthur & I went to Decorah. Were back home here before 11. Had dinner & then Mon took Marion home & stayed over there awhile. Mon feels a little better today. The boys finished peeling posts today & worked at the fence some in P.M. Audry, Harold & Delores were here a little while in eve. Audry got some eggs too set. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Thurs. May 18
Dandy nice day but windy & a little cool. Mon & the boys went up to Richard's in A.M. & got the last of the hay we are too get from him. Ole & Gladys were here a little while in A.M. Mon & Ole went down by Castalia in P.M. & got some soy beans too plant. Mon left here about 12:30 & didn't get back until 7. The boys grubbed in P.M. We went up town in eve.

Fri. May 19
Nice windy day. Arthur disced all day. Mon & Dean worked at the fencing most of the day. I went over to Pearl's a few minutes in A.M.

Sat. May 20
Pretty warm day. Arthur finished discing at noon. Mon & Dean worked at the fence & Arthur helped in P.M. It clouded up late in P.M. & looked pretty stormy but we just got a nice shower. Didn't rain so very much.

Sun. May 21
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon, Dean & I went over to Fred W's about 8:30 A.M. Mon & Dean went fishing & I stayed with Ede. Harry Q's. came about 9:30 & Harry went fishing too. We were all at Fred's for dinner. Mon & I came home about 2 but Dean stayed until about 5. Arthur went fishing down on Silver Creek in A.M. He got home before we did & he also got some nice fish. He went up town a little while in P.M. Raymond Hennings was here awhile in eve. Fred, Ede & Arthur were here & spent the eve. Ede got some eggs too set. Arthur & Dean went over to Dawleys a little while in eve. Pretty cool nite.

Mon. May 22
Looked pretty rainy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice hot day. Arthur planted corn & Dean dragged. Mon & I shelled seed corn in A.M. Mon went up at noon & met the mail man & sent a money order for me. We went up town awhile in eve. Mon & I went up home a minute. Richard B. rode up & back with us. Little daughter born to Florence & Leo Matthews this eve.

Tues. May 23
Quite a nice day but east wind & cool. I washed & ironed. Greg Cramer came early this A.M. & said they were going too start working on the road down at the corner so Mon & the boys had to go & take up our fence. They helped Fritz some too in A.M. taking up his fence & then Dean helped him in P.M. set up a temporary fence too keep his stock in. Arthur finished planting corn in P.M. He got thro' about 3:30. Mon dragged some in P.M. He & I went over to Marions a minute after dinner. Roscoe & Clifford D. came over in eve & the boys went to Bluffton with them.

Wed. May 24
Dandy nice day but pretty warm. Mon went up & got mama early in A.M. & we tried to clean up a little. We took mama home in eve.

Thurs. May 25
Pretty warm day & a terrible wind. An awful amount of dust blowing too. We went up to the school house for dinner. Last day of school and they had a picnic. Sure had a swell dinner & a large crowd. Beatrice had a nice program after dinner & then she served ice cream. This is her last year here. We got home a little after 2 & then Mon & I went to Decorah. Ray Mc. came home with us from the school house & he & Dean went hunting rattle snakes. We had a dandy nice rain in eve. Did a lot of good.

Fri. May 26
Dandy nice day. Quite cool in A.M. but warmed up in P.M. Mon went up & got mama in A.M. & she helped me clean out some of the dust that blew in yesterday. I had Club in P.M. 20 Members, some children & Ruth K. for a visitor. Mon & I took mama home about 5. It started to rain when we were coming home & it sure did rain for awhile. Let up raining about 6 & then started in late in eve & kept it up most of the nite I guess. A dandy rain. Arthur dragged the corn in A.M. & Dean dragged in P.M. & Arthur planted beans or rather Mon & him changed off & Mon & Dean changed off. Leonard bro't his mother over & he was out in the field with them too. Roy Wernett was here in eve. Little daughter born to Dorothea & Gordon R.

Sat. May 27
Rained most of A.M. & sometimes quite hard. Cleared off about noon & was very nice in P.M. until late in P.M. it clouded up. Looked like a pretty bad storm about 6:30 but it only sprinkled a little here. We went up town in eve. I didn't even get out of the car. Got home a little after 11. Mon & the boys hauled out posts for the new fence they are putting in, in P.M.

Sun. May 28
Rather rainy & stormy looking early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice bright day. Leonard W. came over early in A.M. & he & the boys went hunting crows. They came back for dinner & then went again in P.M. Mon went fishing in A.M. & didn't get back until about 5. Leonard came back in eve & he & the boys went fishing for bull heads. They got a few.

Mon. May 29
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Arthur plowed awhile & dragged awhile. Mon went to Mabel in A.M. with Fred W. He & Dean set some posts in P.M.

Tues. May 30
Dandy nice day. Pretty hot. Arthur finished plowing about the middle of P.M. & then dragged the rest of the time. Mon & Dean set posts in A.M. Mon & I went to B.O. in P.M. I went to the cemetry & then up to mama's. Iva was there awhile too. The boys went to B.O. in eve with Arthur W. Charley & Mrs. W. were here awhile just after dinner.

Wed. May 31
Dandy nice day but mighty warm. Arthur finished planting soy beans at noon & Dean finished dragging. Arthur went over to Dave's after dinner & sold them the 2 bu. of soy beans we had left. We all went to Decorah in P.M. Pretty hot down there. Large crowd in town. I got a shampoo & a finger wave. Roy & Vera W. & Maxine came over in eve hanging May baskets. They sat here on the lawn & visited awhile & then went on up to Quandahl's. Dean went up there with them. It was sure a beautiful nite.

Thurs. June 1
Mighty hot day. Arthur disced both gardens in A.M. & hauled up some brace posts. Mon & Dean went to B.O. in A.M. Dean got his hair cut. The men didn't do much of anything in P.M. Kramer's were working down at Fritz's corner & the spent most of the P.M. down there.

Fri. June 2
Dandy nice day. Arthur plowed corn until about 4 P.M. Dean went & plowed & Arthur came in & took a bath. Mon & I went up town awhile in P.M. I went up to mama's & then she & I went up too see Dorothea R. & her new baby girl. She is sure a nice baby. We went over to Charley W's in eve to a party. Quite a few out. Big time. Got home about 3. Beautiful nite.

Sun. June 4
Dandy nice day. Rather cool. We left home about 9:40, went & got Ida Quandahl & took a ride. Went to Lansing & had dinner in the Park went across the river into Wisconsin & then up the river to La Crosse. Stopped at the dam at Genoa awhile. Came home from La Crosse thro' Lanesboro & stopped at the fish hatchery. Got home about 7. Had a fine trip.

Mon. June 5
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed corn. Arthur went up & got Fritz plow in A.M. & plowed & dragged the garden & the truck patch. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Tues. June 6
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. It looked quite rainy for awhile in P.M. but only sprinkled a few drops. Dean plowed corn today. Mon & I planted some garden in A.M. & then Mon, Arthur & I planted potatoes & melons in P.M.

Wed. June 7
Cloudy in A.M. Had quite a hard rain at noon. I planted more garden in A.M. Dean plowed corn. Mon & Arthur worked at the fence. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah in P.M. It rained most of the time we were down there but Dean said it didn't rain here. Mon & I set cabbage & tomato plants after we got home. Had another nice little rain in eve.

Thurs. June 8
Nice day. Quite warm. Dean plowed corn & Arthur & Mon worked at the fence & did other jobs. I went over to Pearl's a few minutes in A.M. too see her little chickens. She & the girls were over here awhile after dinner.

Fri. June 9
Quite a bit cooler. Looked quite rainy at times but sprinkled some in A.M. Dean plowed corn. Mon & Arthur worked at the fence. Mon took me up to Harold Seelye's at noon & I went to Club from there with Ole's at Ella Reed's. Quite a few out and a swell lunch.

Sat. June 10
Sprinkled off & on in A.M. until about 11 it rained quite hard. Rained off & on the rest of the day. Rather cool. Dean plowed corn until it rained & Mon & Arthur worked at the fence. We went up town in P.M. I went up home.

Sun. June 11
Cold windy day. Sun shone some. Roscoe D. came about 9 A.M. & the boys went with him. Mon & I went up home too see about mama's pasture. Loyal was there & he came home with us & helped Mon & I get the calves up from the pasture & in the barn. Frank Reed came & hauled them up to mama's & we put them in her pasture. I stayed up there most of the P.M. The boys were home when we got home. Roscoe & Arthur took our car & went to the show at Decorah in eve. Pretty cool eve.

Mon. June 12
Nice day but cool. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed corn. Mon & Arthur worked at the fence all day. Little son born to Charlotte & Howard McCabe early this A.M.

Tues. June 13
Nice day but cool. Dean plowed corn. Mon went to Prosper & B.O. early in A.M. & didn't get back until nearly noon. He got Gust's woven wire tightener. He & Arthur started to fix fence in P.M. & broke the tightener so had too go to town & get it fixed. We had a little calf today.

Wed. June 14
Sprinkled off & on all day. Rained quite hard for awhile in P.M. The wind blew quite hard all day & it was cool. Dean plowed corn & Mon & Arthur worked at the fence. Mon took me up to Gladys A's in P.M. & I got 4 qts. of strawberries. Had a shortcake for supper. We went up town in eve. I went up home. Isa was there awhile.

Thurs. June 15
Quite a nice day. Pretty cool in A.M. early but warmed up quite a little looked rainy at times but didn't rain. Dean plowed corn. Mon & Arthur worked at the fence. Arthur Smith was here in P.M. & measured our corn, oats etc. We are O.K. We went up town in eve. Large crowd in town. Didn't get home until after 11. Wind blew terribly hard in the nite & got much colder. Aunt Candace died tonite.

Fri. June 16
Cold & stormy looking part of A.M. but cleared off & was sure nice & hot the rest of the day. Got cooler in eve though. Dean plowed. Mon & Arthur worked at the fence. Two of the County men & their cats & graders came & graded down the old road & its banks, here in front of the house & up to the corner east, in P.M. They finished a little after 3. Mon & the boys were out there with them while they were here. Leonard W. came over in eve & he & Arthur went to Decorah to the Show. Mon & I went to B.O.

Sat. June 17
Nice day. Pretty cool in A.M. & looked rainy but soon cleared up. Got pretty warm in P.M. Dean plowed corn & beans in A.M. Mon & Arthur worked at the fence. They got it fixed so we turned the cattle down there about 11. They have fenced off the whole north part of the place & made a lane down from the house so we can have that for a permanent pasture. We had dinner early & then Mon Dean & I went to B.O. & got mama & then to Decorah. Went to Boem's Funeral Home to services for Aunt Candace. Mama rode back to B.O. with Dell's to the service at B.O. & we stayed down town & did our trading. Quite a crowd in town. Went to B.O. in eve & then over to Blaess's to a party. Quite a few there. Arthur stayed at home. Had a pretty good time. Marion went home from B.O. with us & came home with us too. We took Mark Stockman home too. Got home some after 3.

Sun. June 18
Hot, windy dusty day. The boys went fishing in A.M. & didn't get back until about 5. They washed the car too. Mon & I were home alone all day. Dr. Reide was here in A.M. early. Happy, Delores & Marion were here awhile in A.M. Had quite a little rain storm in eve. It looked rather bad for awhile.

Mon. June 19
Not such a nice day. Sprinkled off & on until in P.M. the sun shone some. The men worked at the fence. Mon & I went up town a little while in P.M. I went up home. The boys went fishing in eve.

Tues. June 20
Dandy nice day. Plenty hot. Arthur & Dean plowed corn. Mon worked at the fence in A.M. He went up town awhile in P.M. We went up town in eve about 9. The Club had a lunch & program for the Fathers of the community at the Lutheran parlors. Quite a crowd out. They had a nice program too. We got home about 11:30.

Wed. June 21
Rained most of the day. Sometimes it rained quite hard but most of the time it was just a nice gentle rain. Mon, Dean & I went up town in P.M. Dean went over to Howards in eve. We found a baby coon, on Fritz's hill when we were coming home from town & we bro't it home with us.

Thurs. June 22
Quite a nice day. Sun didn't shine all the time. Looked pretty rainy at times but didn't rain. I washed & ironed. The men moved the brooder house in A.M. & then Arthur went up to Gust's & got the manure spreader. Philip S. was here most of A.M. When he went home Mon & Dean worked at the fence. The boys plowed corn in P.M. Mon went to Canton & got new batteries for the radio. Roscoe & Clifford D. came over in eve & went to Decorah with the boys.

Fri. June 23
Dandy nice day. The boys plowed corn in A.M. & Dean helped Fritz hay in P.M. & Mon took his place plowing corn. Mon, Dean & I went up town awhile in eve.

Sat. June 24
Pretty warm day. Dean helped Fritz hay until about the middle of the P.M. Mon & Arthur plowed corn in A.M. & we went to Decorah in P.M. Got my hair fixed. We went to B.O. in eve. I went up to the Pavilion & helped mama.

Sun. June 25
Pretty warm day. Real nice in A.M. but got quite cloudy in P.M. but didn't rain until in the nite. Claude's & Lester's were here & picked gooseberries. Roscoe & Clifford were over in P.M. too.

Mon. June 26
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Pretty warm in P.M. The boys hauled manure in A.M. & plowed corn in P.M. Dean broke his plow late in P.M. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve too get it fixed. Gust & Kate were up town & Gust broke the axle on his car just as they were ready too go home so we took them home. Dean went up to Ludwig's. I worked in the garden in P.M. Mon helped me a little.

Tues. June 27
Pretty hot day. I washed & ironed. The boys plowed corn. Dean went up to Fritz's, to help him finish putting up his hay, about 10 A.M. & Mon plowed the rest of the day until about 4 P.M. he broke the plow again. Mrs. Q., Ida & Howard were down in P.M. & picked gooseberries.

Wed. June 28
Pretty hot day until late in P.M. it cooled off some. Looked mighty stormy for awhile in P.M. but it only sprinkled a little here. Arthur plowed corn all day. Mon went to Cresco early in A.M. too get repairs for Dean's plow & then had too go to B.O. too get it fixed when he got home. Dean plowed corn after Mon got home. Arthur went & got Ida Q. early in A.M. too help me & then took her home in eve. We listened to the Joe Louis - Tony Galento fight in eve. Joe won on a tecnical knockout in the 4th round. Frank Reed hauled some cattle to Decorah for us early in A.M. to the Sale 1 cow 740 lbs. @ 5.35, 1 calf 90 lbs. @ 6.75, 1 steer 830 lbs. 6.90, 2 steers 1300 lbs. @ 6.70 comm etc. $5.95 leaving us, $190.03.

Thurs. June 29
Very nice in A.M. Quite a nice cool breeze. Clouded up in P.M. & looked pretty bad but it only sprinkled a little the wind blew quite hard for awhile. The boys plowed corn in A.M. Mon & I went up town about 10 A.M. too get the dishes, chairs & silverware from the church. Mama came home with us. I had M.E.L.A.S. in P.M. Florence, Aunt Alice & Mrs. Lovlien came early & they helped us. Very large crowd out. Had lots to eat too. Mama, Aunt Alice & Mrs. L. stayed & we took them home in eve. Pretty cool nite.

Fri. June 30
Nice day but rather cool. Mon & I left here about 8:30 A.M. & went to Cresco too get the rest of the repairs for Dean's plow & from there to Decorah. Got 309 little chickens. Got home about 2 P.M. Mon got a new hay fork in Decorah. Arthur mowed hay in A.M. The men did odd jobs in P.M.

Sat. July 1
Dandy nice day. Not too hot & still warm enough. The men put up 3 loads of hay. We went up town in eve. Quite a crowd in town. Got home about 12. Dean came home with Roscoe D. Milt Whitney died today.

Sun. July 2
Nice day but mighty windy. The boys went fishing in A.M. & didn't get back until nearly 7. Guess they were over to Dawleys most of the time. Harold, Audry & Delores were here in eve. They came over to swear Mon in as Sec. of the school board. The directors put him in Sat. nite. Put Gladys A. out. Didn't set very good with her either. Mon & I went up town awhile in P.M. I went up home. Olive was there too.

Mon. July 3
Nice day. Pretty warm. The boys plowed corn. I washed & ironed. Mon did odd jobs. We went up town awhile in eve.

Tues. July 4
Mighty hot day. Not any breeze hardly & that was warm. The boys went about 9 A.M. with Roscoe & Clifford D. Went to La Crosse & down the river to Lansing. Mon & I went down to Aunt Lissa's for dinner. Aunt Albert's, & Raymond's were there & they had a picnic but not many there. Sure had a swell dinner. We took mama home about 4 & then came on home. The boys came not so long after we got home. We went to B.O. in eve. I went to the Pavilion & helped mama. Very large crowd there. The men said it was a loud town all nite. We got home about 1. Marion was over awhile in A.M. & Mon took him home. Bea was here awhile just before we went to town.

Wed. July 5
Pretty warm day but not as bad as yesterday. Better breeze. The boys plowed corn. Marion sold some hogs so Mon went over there about 8 A.M. & took him to Prosper & then on to Mabel & then home. Mon didn't get home until about noon. Mon & I went to B.O. awhile in P.M. Took the chairs, dishes & silverware back to the church. Milt Whitney was buried at B.O. this P.M. Pretty warm nite.

Thurs. July 6
Mighty hot day. Worst day yet. We put up hay in P.M. Plenty hot work.

Fri. July 7
Quite a nice day. Not so warm but still warm. Chas. W. came over in A.M. & he & Arthur went too the river too see about getting some gravel. Loyal came down this A.M. early & he went with them. Mon, Dean & I went over & got Marion about 10:30 & went to B.O. & then to Decorah. Dean stayed in B.O. & got his hair cut. I got my hair fixed in Decorah. We got home a little after 2 & the boys got here with gravel just as we got here. I fixed them a lunch & then we went back to B.O. Club at Ethel R's. Not so many out. Had a dandy lunch. Dean came home with us. We took Marion home to. Chas. stayed for supper & then they hauled a load of gravel in eve. Mon & I went up to Ludwig's in eve.

Sat. July 8
Nice warm day. Arthur mowed in A.M. Dean, Loyal & Chas. Hauled the last load of gravel this A.M. We put up hay in P.M. Went up town in eve. Loyal went home. Arthur didn't go up town. Mon & I got home about 12. Dean came home with Dawley's later.

Sun. July 9
Nice warm day. Mon went over to Louie K's early in A.M. & then up & got mama. Aunt Lissa, Uncle Albert's, Dell's & Marion were here & spent the day. Mon & I took Marion home in eve. Mama rode home with Uncle Albert's.

Mon. July 10
Nice warm day. Arthur mowed in A.M. & they put up hay in P.M. I started to wash & something went wrong with the engine so Mon took it up town & got it fixed so I washed in P.M. Ironed some too.

Tues. July 11
Quite a warm day. Arthur mowed in A.M. & Dean plowed beans. I finished ironing. We put up hay in P.M. Looked rainy but didn't rain.

Wed. July 12
Mighty hot day. Arthur mowed in A.M. & we put up 1 load in P.M. Too hot. Mama & Ruth P. came down about 2 P.M. & stayed for supper. I rode up town with them & Mon & Dean came up later & got me. I went up home. Isa & Aunt Alice were there too. Millard Walton went on a rampage this P.M. & eve & so they called the sheriff & he came & got him & took him to Independence. Good place for him.

Thurs. July 13
Warm day & mighty windy. Terribly dusty. Everything filled with dust. We put up 1 load of hay in A.M. & that filled the barn. We went to Decorah in P.M. Arthur went to Lodge in eve & Dean went up to Ludwigs. Lester, Isa & Harlan were here a few minutes after dinner.

Fri. July 14
Nice day. Lester & Harlan came down in A.M. early & started to put up what hay there was left. They are stacking it out in the field. They went home for dinner & supper. Mon started too cut grain in A.M. & broke the binder just as they got up on the road & then he & Arthur went over to Happy's & got repairs so they cut grain in P.M. Looked mighty stormy in eve but didn't rain.

Sat. July 15
Nice day. Mon cut grain. Lester & Harlan were down & put up hay today. Arthur & I went up town early in A.M. Went up to mama's a minute. Isa came home with us & then went home with Lester & Harlan in P.M. Mon, Dean, Arthur & I went up town in eve. The Joan of Arc had an ice cream Social for the benefit of the cemetry, on the Lutheran church lawn in eve.

Sun. July 16
Cloudy & cool all day. Looked like it might rain at any time but it only sprinkled a few times. Had a hard rain in the nite. Quite a lot of thunder & lightning. We went down to Claude's & spent the day. The boys went down there with Roscoe D. early in A.M. & played horse shoe. Mama was down there too. Mrs. Q. was here & picked gooseberries in P.M. Ida & the boys came down after her just after we got home so they were here for awhile.

Mon. July 17
Rained off & on all day. Some times quite hard. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in P.M. I went up to mama's.

Tues. July 18
Didn't look very good in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & wasn't so bad. Mon cut grain in P.M. I pulled weeds most of the P.M.

Wed. July 19
Nice day. Quite warm. Lester & Harlan were down & put up hay again today. I washed. Mon left here about 7:30 A.M. too go over with the other trustee's too settle a fence dispute between Louie U. & Ole Stockman. He got home just as we were eating dinner. He cut grain in P.M. I went to Lutheran L.A.S. with Kate Leonhart in P.M. Jane G. entertained at the church parlors. Had a dandy supper. Quite a few out. Mon, Arthur & I went up town in eve. Dean went to Fritz's.

Thurs. July 20
Nice day. Quite warm. Mon finished cutting grain at noon. Lester finished the hay this P.M. Loyal was down with them today too. Mon, Arthur & I went up & got mama after dinner & we went to Decorah. Dean plowed beans. Arthur went to Lodge in eve & Dean went with Leonard B. He didn't get home until morning.

Fri. July 21
Nice day. Looked rather rainy at times but didn't rain. Mon & Arthur hauled manure in A.M. & Dean plowed beans. Mon took me to Club in P.M. at Grace Gossman's. We were invited there & took our lunch & had a picnic lunch. Quite a few out. Had a swell lunch. The boys hauled manure in P.M. Gust was here awhile in A.M.

Sat. July 22
Nice day. The boys hauled manure. Mon went over to Marions in A.M. We went to B.O. in eve. I went up to the Pavilion about 11 & stayed with mama until the dance was out & then we took her home. We got home about 1:30. Marion rode to B.O. with us & Ole rode home with us.

Sun. July 23
Nice day. Arthur went with Roscoe in A.M. & Dean went down to the creek & then both of the boys went with Roscoe in P.M. to Bluffton to a ball game & to play horseshoe. Mama called about 7 P.M. that one of the calves was out so Mon, Dean & I went up & they got it in the pasture & fixed the fence.

Mon. July 24
Nice most of the day & pretty warm. Clouded up in P.M. & thundered quite a bit but didn't rain. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed beans in A.M. Mon & Arthur went with the team & wagon down to Marion's old place & hauled some boards from there over to where he lives, for him. They got home about noon. Arthur & Dean hauled manure in P.M.

Tues. July 25
Pretty warm day. The boys hauled manure all day. I patched most of the day. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Mon & I went up town. I went up to mama's. Mrs. Scholey was there awhile too.

Wed. July 26
Mighty hot day. They started threshing at Harold L's today. (Howard's rig). Dean is threshing for Howard this year & Arthur went for Fritz so Mon had too go for us. I didn't do too much.

Thurs. July 27
Mighty hot day. The folks threshed at Wilhelm's & Red's today. Clouded up late in P.M. & looked quite bad but didn't rain until about 8:30. Wind blew terribly hard for over an hour & the dust was terrible. Everything filled with dust. We went up town about 8:30. Got home about 9:30. Paul Reed & Gladys Amunruud were married today.

Fri. July 28
Rather cloudy in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Charles W. hauled the calves down from mamas early this A.M. Mon & Dean went along with him. Dean & I went up to Ludwigs about 8:30 & got some apples. So many blew off last nite in that wind. Mon & I went to Decorah in A.M. Got back about 12. The boys threshed at Ludwigs in P.M. Mon & I went up there about 3:30 & stayed a little while & then on up town a few minutes.

Sat. July 29
Dandy nice day. Not so hot. Mon went over about 8 A.M. to meet the other trustees & settle a fence dispute between Gust & Willard Chase. He didn't get home until about 12. The boys threshed at Fritz's in A.M. & at Harry's in P.M. Mon went over to Harry's just after dinner & he came home about 3:15 & said we were going to thresh this P.M. so we had too go up town & get some things too eat. Mama & Mr. Lovlien came home with us to help. They got started a little after 4 & finished at 6. We went up town in eve. Mama & Mr. L. went back with us. I went up & helped mama all eve. Lester, Isa & Harlan were here most of A.M. Charley W's were here awhile to.

Sun. July 30
Quite a nice day. Not too warm. Mon got Charles W. to haul the calves over to Marion's in A.M. He & the boys went along over. Mon stayed at Marion's & the boys went down to Dawley's creek & washed the car. They came back about 12 & Roscoe & Clifford were with them. They went on to Prosper roller skating & were up there until about 6. Howard, Harry & Arthur were here a little while in P.M. Floyd & Gladys Blaess' little girl "Dodie" was killed on the paving at B.O. this A.M. Too terribly bad.

Mon. July 31
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon & the boys threshed at Fred W's & Charley W's. Pearl & the girls were here in P.M. a while.

Tues. Aug. 1
Pretty hot day. Clouded up late in P.M. & rained a little in eve. Lloyd K. came down about 6 & bought our sow's & Chas. W. hauled them. Mon went along & stayed in B.O. & had Roy overhaul the car. I went to B.O. about 11 with Howard's. I went up to mama's & had dinner & then she & I went up to the Lutheran church to "Dodie's" funeral. Very large crowd. Not nearly room enough in the church for the crowd. I went over to their house & helped after the funeral, getting lunch ready for them when they came back from the Hesper cemetery. Quite a few there for lunch. I came home with Mon about 5:30. Loyal came home with us & Lester & Isa came down to get acquainted with the chores. Harold, Audry & Dolores were here in eve. The 10 sows weighed 239 lbs. at 4.50 $107.55.

Wed. Aug. 2
Rather damp & cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy day. Quite warm but the breeze was cool. Dean & I went over to Howard's a minute early in A.M. & then we went to Decorah. Got home about 1:30. Went up to B.O. about 3. I went up to Mrs. Lovliens to Lutheran L.A.S. She had a large crowd & a swell lunch. We took Marion home from B.O. Lester's were here in eve a few minutes, also Albert Erickson's. Cool nite. Loyal stayed all nite.

Thurs. Aug. 3
Dandy nice day. Rather cool breeze all day. I got up about 4:15 A.M. & the folks got up soon after. Lester, Isa & the boys came about 5, we all had breakfast & we started on a trip west about 5:30. We went thro' Minneapolis & on N. & W. until we got to Fargo N.D. about 6:30 P.M. We stopped at different places on our way. Saw some great country & some that wasn't so nice. Stayed in a tourist cabin at Fargo all nite. Went up town awhile in eve & got a lunch. Mighty cool nite.

Fri. Aug. 4
Pretty cool in A.M. but warmed up & was mighty hot in P.M. We left Fargo about 6 A.M. & rode until 5:30 P.M. We changed time at Bismark so we are an hour earlier here at Glendive Montana where we stayed at a tourist camp all nite. We stopped quite a few different places during the day. Saw some great scenery thro' the Bad Land's. We went up town after we had shower baths & had some lunch.

Sat. Aug. 5
Looked quite rainy when we got up about 5:30 & it sprinkled off & on all A.M. but cleared off & was mighty hot in P.M. We left Glendive about 6 & got into Billings about 12:30. Our car was leaking oil so we stopped there at the Chev. garage & had it fixed. We didn't get away from there until about 4:30 P.M. We came on then to Geo's. Got here about 6:30. They were sure glad too see us. We sat up until after 11 talking.

Sun. Aug. 6
Dandy nice early in A.M. but clouded up & rained most of P.M. & nite. The men went out looking for Geo's horses in A.M. They found 3 of them. Mr. & Mrs. Cooper were here for dinner. They left soon after dinner on account of the rain. Got quite a lot cooler.

Mon. Aug. 7
Nice day but the wind was cool all day. The men went in A.M. & found George's other horse. We all went to Absorkee in P.M. for awhile.

Tues. Aug. 8
Quite nice in A.M. but cool. It clouded up about noon & sprinkled a little in P.M., but started to rain about dark & kept it up all nite I guess. The men folks left about 11 A.M. too go up in the mountains on a fishing trip. One of the neighbors went along & they took camping stuff so as to stay over nite. Cecilia & I did up chores & canned some apricots in P.M. we walked over to the big spring.

Wed. Aug. 9
Rained hard early in A.M. but cleared off about 10 & was nice for awhile. It clouded up again about 2 & did it ever hail & rain. Got much colder too. The hail laid about 2 inches all over the ground & stayed until the next A.M. Cecilia & I washed & ironed & she scrubbed the floor. The men got home about 5:30 cold but not very damp. They didn't get the rain & hail we did. They bro't home 6 trout for Cecilia & I & we ate them all. They were sure good.

Thurs. Aug. 10
Nice day but cool. Didn't do much in A.M. Mrs. McDonald rode her pony over in P.M. & stayed awhile & Mr. & Mrs. Blankenship were over & spent the P.M. too. Dean cracked some walnuts that we had bro't out to Cecilia & after supper she made some fudge.

Fri. Aug. 11
Dandy nice day. Rather windy. We left Geo's about 10:30 A.M., Geo & Cecilia went with us. We stopped at the field where Guy & Cody Bovee were cutting timothy & visited with them awhile & then stopped at Coopers a minute & then on to Absorkee. I got a new dress there. We got back to Geo's about 3 & had dinner. Geo killed 4 prairie chickens & Cecilia & I fried them for our dinner tomorrow. We all went over to Earol & Eileen Blankenstifs in eve. Had prairie chicken, sage hen & deer meat too eat over there. Had a good time. Got home about 10:30. Went to bed about 11.

Sat. Aug. 12
Nice day. We got up early & left Geo's about 7:15 for the Yellow Stone Park. We went in thro' Cooke City. That was sure some drive up the mountain. Winding round & round until we got to the top. It sure was cold up on the top of the mt. Quite a lot of snow. We saw quite a few bear & deer & moose. We saw the grand Canyon & Falls & lots of other interesting things. Had quite a time to find a place too stay all nite. Had to go back to Mammoth Hot Springs too stay. Mighty cold nite. Bears around the cabins all nite. Had some noisy people in the cabin next to us too.

Sun. Aug. 13
Dandy nice day. Got pretty warm before nite. We left Mammoth about 6:30 A.M. We saw many interesting sights during the day, including the small geysers & mud springs, Morning Glory Pool. We stopped at Old Faithful quite a while. Stopped at the Shoshone Dam awhile too. Saw moose & bears coming thro' the Park. Left the park at the east entrance at 2:15. Sure had some bad roads for awhile. Got into Greybull Wyoming about 6:30 P.M. & got a cabin for the nite or rather 2 single cabins. We went up town & had lunch & the boys went to a show. Cool nite.

Mon. Aug. 14
Rather cool in A.M. early but got pretty warm before the day was over. We left Greybull about 6 A.M. & traveled the rest of the way across Wyo. & it sure was hot in some places. Sure some climb going up the mts. & some ride down. We got as far as Custer & stayed all nite at Grey Rocks Cabins. Had chicken pie supper at the Lodge too. It was sure good. Got in here about 6 P.M.

Tues. Aug. 15
Pretty hot day. Cool early in A.M. & eve. We left Custer about 5:40 & rode until about 8 P.M. when we arrived at Emory & got 2 cabins. Went up town & had ice cream after we got here. Saw some grand scenery on our way out thro' the Black Hills. Saw quite a few deer buffalo & mountain sheep. Stopped at Rapid City & saw Florrel Potter at the barber shop & then stopped at the house & saw Bessie a minute. Saw the Stratosphere Bowl this A.M. too.

Wed. Aug. 16
Rather cloudy all A.M. sprinkled a few times rather cool in A.M. but warmed up some in P.M. Not too warm riding though. We got up early & left Emory about 5:30 & traveled across Iowa home. Got home about 4 P.M. Good to get home but we sure had a grand trip & a grand time. Saw things I never expected too see. Lesters went home after supper. We went up town awhile in eve. I went up to Mama's. Iva was there too. Looked pretty rainy in eve but didn't rain.

Thurs. Aug. 17
Looked rather rainy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Pretty hot though. Lesters came down just after breakfast & stayed until after dinner. I washed in A.M. & did odd jobs in P.M. Bea was here awhile in P.M. Happy was here all P.M. Lesters came down in eve & got their chickens.

Fri. Aug. 18
Nice day. Pretty hot. Mon & I went up & got Mama about 9 A.M. & then went down to Metties & got some little apples to can. Lester & the boys bro't Isa down & she helped us can. We canned 27 qts. of little apples & 2 qts. of plums. I ironed in P.M. Arthur went fishing in P.M. but didn't get any fish. Mon & I took mama & Isa home about 5.

Sat. Aug. 19
Pretty hot day. Mon went over to Marions early in A.M. & then Marion came home with him & we all went to Decorah about 10 A.M. Very large crowd in town. (Fair this week.) We saw the largest man in the world & he sure was a big man. Only 21 years old. It was a pitiful sight too see to. He is so crippled. We got a bu. of peaches. $1.79 & a crate of prunes .98¢. We got home about 2. Marion came home with us & had dinner & then Mon took him home about 4:30. Philip S. came just after we got home & stayed until after 4. We went up town in eve. Marion went with us. I went up to the Pavilion. Arthur went to Decorah with the Dawley boys. Dean didn't come home with us either. We got home about 1:30.

Sun. Aug. 20
Cloudy early in A.M. & started to rain about 11 A.M. & it sure did rain at rimes & the rest of the day & nite. Dean went over to Howard's in A.M. & then on to Decorah & didn't get home until about 8 P.M. Arthur went fishing & got home about 2 P.M. He got 21 fish so we had fish for supper. Pretty cool day & nite.

Mon. Aug. 21
Dandy nice day but cool. Mon went up & got mama early in A.M. & we canned 22 qts. of peaches & 8½ qts. of prunes. We took mama home about 3:30 & stopped at Ludwig's on our way home & got a pail of apples to use. Maxine & Alice A. were here a few minutes late in P.M. Howard was here awhile in eve. The boys filled ditches all day.

Tues. Aug. 22
Rained in A.M. & some times quite hard. Rained some in P.M. but not much. We went up town in P.M. I went up home but mama wasn't at home so I went down to Josie's & Alberta's & spent most of the P.M.

Wed. Aug. 23
Dandy nice day. We went to Decorah about 10 A.M. that is all but Dean, he didn't feel too well so he stayed at home. The Joan of Arc had their picnic at the swimming pool. Most of the Club were there. Had a dandy dinner & a good time. Got home about 5. Mon & I went & got Marion & went down to Florence's in eve. I got some duchess apples. We got home about 10.

Thurs. Aug. 24
Nice day. The boys filled ditches & did odd jobs. Mon went up town early in A.M. too get repairs for the pumping engine but he couldn't make it work so I couldn't wash. I canned some plums. I went to L.A.S. at the M.E. church (Gladys A. entertained) late in P.M. with Maxine, Lizzie & Kate L. Very large crowd. Had a swell supper. We went up town in eve. I went up to mama's Olive & the kids were there too.

Fri. Aug. 25
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men did odd jobs. Mon went up town in P.M. & the boys went fishing. (They got 39). Loyal came home with Mon.

Sat. Aug. 26
Nice day. The men worked at fencing. Ruby Rehwinkel & Curtis Foltz were here in P.M. Ruby got some plums. We went up town in eve. Loyal went home. I went up to the Pavilion & helped mama. Marvin went with me & then came home with us. Ida Q. rode home with us too. Got home about 1:30.

Sun. Aug. 27
Nice day. Mon, Arthur & Marvin went to Bluffton in A.M. & Dean went over to Howard's. The boys all went over to Dawley's in P.M. Mon & I went down & looked at the corn & then up to the truck patch too see the melon's & potatoes. They boys & I took Marvin home in eve.

Mon. Aug. 28
Nice day. I made some pickles & did other odd jobs. The men worked at the fence. School started in our district today with Alice Albertson as teacher.

Tues. Aug. 29
Nice day & pretty warm. Mon went & got Marion early in A.M. too help him awhile this A.M. He stayed for dinner & then we went to Decorah in P.M. All but Arthur.

Wed. Aug. 30
Pretty warm day. I washed & ironed. The men worked at the fence. Quandahl's were down in A.M. & got some elderberries. Dean took me over to Fred Walter's about 4:30 to the Lutheran L.A.S. Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy supper. I rode home with Ruby Rehwinkel & her mother & Irene T. We went over to Charley W's. to a party in eve. Quite a few there. Didn't get home until 4 A.M. Too late. They have sold the place to Fred Walter's & are moving back to their own place tomorrow.

Thurs. Aug. 31
Nice day but pretty warm. They boys worked at the fence some in A.M. Mon went to B.O. about 10 A.M. with Wernetts & didn't get home until about 2. The boys went fishing in P.M. Mon & I went up town a little while in P.M. too get some repairs for the pumping engine. Didn't do so very much today.

Fri. Sept. 1
Quite a nice day. Pretty warm. Clouded up some in P.M. but didn't rain. Cleared off again late in P.M. Mon & I took mama to Decorah in A.M. too get her glasses fixed, but Dr. Barfoot couldn't fix them, had too send them away to be fixed, He gave her another pair to wear until hers were fixed. Mama came home with us & we had dinner & then we went back to B.O. Dean went along to. I went to Club at Dorothy Rolf's with Inez W. Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy lunch. Dave & Harry Q. were here today. Germany declared war on Poland today.

Sat. Sept. 2
Pretty warm day. Rather cloudy in A.M. but didn't rain. Arthur & I went up to Isa's early in A.M. & got some tomatoes & she & mama came home with us & helped can them. Canned 26 qts. in A.M. Mon took them home after dinner & stayed up town most of P.M. The boys worked at the old separator of Ed D's tearing it up. We went up town in eve. Stopped at Red's on our way home a few minutes. They were having a dance. We got home about 11:30. Dean stayed until the dance broke up, which was morning I guess.

Sun. Sept. 3
Nice day. Pretty hot. Chas. W. & Roscoe D. came while we were eating breakfast & then Roscoe & Arthur went fishing. They got back about 2:30 P.M. with a nice big lot of fish. Chas stayed awhile in A.M. Howard was over awhile in A.M. The boys went over to Cold Water in P.M. to a weiner roast. Arthur went roller skating in eve. It looked pretty rainy in eve but it just sprinkled a little. England & France declared war on Germany today.

Mon. Sept. 4
Quite a cool day. I washed & ironed. Mon went over to Louie K's & Walt R's. in A.M. The boys worked at the fence. Mon went over to Marion's in P.M. but he wasn't home. Dean went over to Howard's. Aunt Eunice, Vin., Sonny, Aunt Lissa & Mama were here a few minutes in P.M. Mon & I went down to the Community Hall for supper. Had a grand supper. Large crowd there. We got home about 10. Pretty cool nite.

Tues. Sept. 5
Nice day. Cool. Mon & I went up early in A.M. & got some tomatoes at Isa's & she & mama came home with us & helped can them. We canned 19 qts. We took them home after dinner & stopped at Ludwig's on our way home & got 2 bu. of apples. We stopped at Ole's a few minutes on our way to B.O. in A.M. The men worked at the fence today. We got a letter from Cecilia & George.

Wed. Sept. 6
Pretty hot day. Warmest day on record at Des Moines for this time of the year. I made catsup & did a lot of odd jobs & patched in P.M. The men finished the fence in A.M. & Arthur started cutting beans. He finished this east piece this P.M. Dean went over to Howard's in P.M. & Mon went to B.O. Howard was over here in eve.

Thurs. Sept. 7
Pretty hot day. We all went to B.O. about 9 A.M. & then all but Dean went on to Decorah. Mama went too. She got her glasses today. I got my hair fixed. Mon got a hair cut too. Arthur got some new shoes. We got back to B.O. about noon. Dean got a hair cut in B.O. & then he came home with us. The men worked at the beans.

Fri. Sept. 8
Nice day but cooler. Mon went up early in A.M. & got mama & Isa & they came down & helped can apples. Mon, Isa & I went up to Ludwig's after dinner & got some more apples. We canned 41 qts. Mon took the folks home about 4:30 P.M. The men worked at the beans & finished that piece about 4 P.M. Arthur helped Dave with his beans in P.M. We went down to Karl Christophers in eve to a party. Big crowd there. Didn't have as good a time as we have been having at our parties. We got home about 2:30. It rained some before we came home & then afterward too.

Sat. Sept. 9
Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. The men didn't do much of anything. Rather lazy bunch. I worked all day.

Sun. Sept. 10
Dandy nice day, a little cool. Dean went fishing. Mon, Arthur & I went up to Walter Barth's to a picnic. Mama went along. Claudes, Lena & Clifford, Edward & Mary & James Aasum's were there too. Had a dandy dinner & supper. The men went to a ball game at B.O. in P.M. We got home about 6 & Arthur went right down to Charley W's too see Eunice (Betty) & as Dean wasn't home yet that left Mon with all the chores to do.

Mon. Sept. 11
Not such a nice day, pretty cool. Cloudy most of A.M. & in P.M. it sure did rain. Most of the P.M. too. I washed & ironed. Charley W. came over in A.M. & butchered a beef for us & as soon as he was thro' Mon took it to Decorah to put it in the locker. He didn't get home until about supper time. Dean went over to Howard's in P.M.

Tues. Sept. 12
Dandy nice day only mighty hot. The boys fixed fence most of the day. Harry Q. was here most of A.M. & made catsup & picked cukes & tomatoes. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve. They put me on a menu com. for the M.E.L.A.S. chicken supper & so I went up too help fix that up. We got home about 10.

Wed. Sept.13
Hot day again. Hottest days on record for most of Iowa for this time of year. Many places both yesterday & today it was 100 or over. Arthur went over to Krumm's for Harold S. early in A.M. too thresh sweet clover. He got home about 10:30. Mon cut beans in A.M. & Arthur finished them in P.M. Mon went over to Marion's in P.M. & then on to B.O. & Prosper. Arthur, Eunice, Mon & I went over to Jodie Gossman's to a barn dance in eve. Gene McCabe was having it. Quite a crowd. We got home about 12:30. Dean went with Roscoe D.

Thurs. Sept. 14
Mighty hot day again. The men raked & shocked up some of the beans in A.M. but it got so hot & dry the quit at noon. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. Mighty hot down there. Howard was over awhile in eve. The bell cow had a calf today.

Fri. Sept. 15
Hot windy day again. The men finished shocking up the beans in A.M. I went to Club at Laura Berg's in P.M. with Harold & Dorothy. Quite a crowd out to Club & she had a swell lunch. We had a shower for Fern. She got some nice things. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. Arthur went too see Eunice in eve. We listened to the Lou Nova - Tony Galento fight in eve. Galento won. It cooled off a lot in the eve & nite.

Sat. Sept. 16
Pretty nice day. Not so hot. We put up 2 ½ loads of beans in the barn in P.M. Mon, Dean started for B.O. in eve & we caught up to Bea up by Richard's & she wanted us to take her too town too see about Red. (He had gone down this A.M. early & hadn't come home). So we waited until she got ready & then we went to B.O. Dean stayed there & Mon & I took her to Decorah. She found Red at Ward Rimas so she stayed there & we went back to B.O. Stayed there awhile & got home about 12.

Sun. Sept. 17
Dandy nice day. Dean was gone most of the day fishing. Arthur went over & got Marion about noon. We all went over to Dave's awhile in P.M. Dave was over in A.M. & he wanted Mon to come over & help him a little in P.M. John & Nettie Lodgson came about 8:30 looking for boys to work so Dean went home with them to help.

Mon. Sept. 18
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went down to Leonhart's early in A.M. Arthur worked around here awhile & then Dave came over after him to help him. Mon went & got Marion about 11 A.M. & they went to Prosper. Mon got back about 12:30. He went over to Marion's in P.M. to help him. Dean came home tonite. Rode up with Ronald Webb. Mon went to B.O. in eve with Fred Walters. Ida Q. had her tonsils out in Decorah today & didn't get along very well. They bled pretty much in the nite.

Tues. Sept. 19
Dandy nice day. Arthur helped Dave until about 4 P.M. Dean went back to John's early this A.M. & came home tonite for a few days. Mon worked at the corn binder all day. I canned some in A.M. & patched in P.M.

Wed. Sept. 20
Our 23rd Wedding Anniversary. Dandy nice day. Cool. Mon & the boys worked at the corn binder in A.M. Mon had to go over to Marions at noon too help him get his engine going. When he got back he started cutting corn. The boys shocked some. Howard's were over in eve & listened to the Joe Louis Bob Pastor fight. Louis won in the 11th round. Had a light frost in some places tonite but didn't hurt anything. Pretty cool. We had our first fried young chicken today.

Thurs. Sept. 21
Nice day. Mon cut corn & the boys shocked. We went up town in eve. I went up to mama's. Olive & the little boys were there too. We got home about 11.

Fri. Sept. 22
Dandy nice day but windy & cool. Dean went back to John's today but came home tonite. Mon finished cutting corn this noon. Arthur shocked corn in A.M. & they both shocked awhile in P.M. but it was so windy they quit shocking & dug potatoes. I picked up potatoes awhile. Gladys A. came down after me about 5 & we went to B.O. The M.E.L.A.S. had a cream chicken supper at the church parlors. I helped in the kitchen. Quite a crowd there. Had a good supper. The folks came up after me in eve. We got home about 9:30.

Sat. Sept. 23
Nice cool day. Mon & Arthur finished shocking corn about 2 & we went to Decorah. Saw Ruth P. Quite a crowd in town. Ludwig rode home from Decorah with us. Dean worked for John again today. He got thro' tonite. We didn't go up town tonite. The white cow had a calf tonite.

Sun. Sept. 24
Nice day only cool. The boys went up & got mama early in A.M. Ruth, Francis & Uncle Dan came up & spent the day. Leonard W. came up in A.M. & he & Dean went fishing & didn't get home until about 6. The boys took mama home about 7:30. The wind blew terribly hard all nite. Lots of dust blowing.

Mon. Sept. 25
Cloudy most of the A.M. & it started to rain in P.M. & rained, sleeted & snowed most of P.M. Mon & Arthur picked up a jag of corn in A.M. & went up to Ole's in P.M. & got his hay pole too put up beans with. Dean finished digging the potatoes today. I helped him pick up some of them in P.M. Will & O'Dean L. were here awhile in A.M. Dean went over to Howards in eve. We had our first killing frost tonite & it wasn't too bad.

Tues. Sept. 26
Nice day but cool. I washed & ironed. The men worked at the fence they are putting up for the bean stack. Mon, Dean & I went up town awhile in eve. Marion rode up town with us from Ludwigs but he went home with Happy. The light colored heifer had a calf today.

Wed. Sept. 27
Dandy nice day. Somewhat warmer, but the wind was cool. Marion came over early in A.M. & they finished the fence & got the hay pole up before dinner. Mon & Marion went over to Marion's in P.M. long enough to water the calves & hogs. They put up beans 2 loads in P.M. I went to Lutheran L.A.S. at Martin Jaarstad's with Mart & Kate L. Quite a crowd out. They sure had a swell supper. Mon & I took Marion home in eve. The boys went to Jack Mullaney's to a dance in the new barn in eve with Roscoe. Howard was here awhile in A.M. & Will & O'Dean L. were here awhile at noon.

Thurs. Sept. 28
Mighty hot day until about 4 P.M. the wind changed into the north & it got a lot cooler. It clouded up too & we had quite an electrical storm about 6. Marion came over early in A.M. & they got Erlin's wagon & put up the rest of the beans today. They got in 11 loads today. Mon took Marion home after supper. Rained most of the nite I guess. Pretty cool. Ern & Zoa Reed were married today.

Fri. Sept. 29
Pretty cool, windy day. Mon went over & helped Marion finish his cellar steps. The boys got a jag of wood & picked up some corn in A.M. & then they finished picking up the corn in P.M. Arthur took me to Club at Alice Seelye's in P.M. Quite a crowd out & we had a nice lunch. Mon & Arthur came after me about 5. It froze hard tonite.

Sat. Sept. 30
Quite a nice day. Somewhat warmer. Mon went over to Marion's a minute early in A.M. They set up the sitting room stove this A.M. We had an early dinner & Mon, Dean, Marion & I went to Decorah. Arthur went over to Dave's to drive their car but Maxine had the keys so they couldn't go anywhere. She was in La Crosse. I got my hair fixed today. Quite a crowd in town. We went to B.O. in eve & then Lester's & us went down to Breezy Hill awhile to hear the music. Vince's Hot Shots. The boys went with Roscoe. I went up to the Pavilion awhile after we got back to B.O. but I nearly froze. We got home about 12:30.

Nice day. We went down to Claude's & spent the day. Had a good time. Mama was there too. The boys went hunting.

Mon. Oct. 2
Pretty windy day but not too cool. I washed & ironed. The men went to Marion's & dug potatoes. They got home about 4.

Tues. Oct. 3
Nice day but quite windy. The men took Ole's hay pole home in A.M. & then went over to Marions & got the cement mixer. They picked corn in P.M. Pearl & Darlene were here awhile after dinner & Verna was here after school.

Wed. Oct. 4
Pretty warm day. Mon & I went to B.O. about 9 A.M. & got mama & went to Decorah She got a permanent at Alice's Beauty Shop. We got out of there about 1 & then did quite a little running around. We got back to B.O. about 3. Mon & I stopped at the cemetry on our way home too see papa's marker that mama had just got. It is very nice. The boys picked a couple of loads of corn today. It rained some in the nite. Mag had a little calf tonite. The first game of the World Series Ball game played today between the New York Yankees & the Cincinnati Reds. Yanks won 2-1.

Thurs. Oct. 5
Rather cool & cloudy most of the day. Mon went over to Marion's early in A.M. & then they went to Prosper. Mon was back in time for dinner. They started working on the new hen house today. Laid it out & dug trenches for the wall's & put in some forms. The lumber Co. bro't the lumber & cement in P.M. The boys went to B.O. in eve. Second game of the World Series played today. Yanks won 4-0. Little daughter born to Neva & Raymond L. Neva Miranda.

Fri. Oct. 6
Dandy nice day. The men worked at the hen house putting in forms. Marion was here.

Sat. Oct. 7
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Marion came over in A.M. & they put in the cement foundation today. Pretty hot work for them. Mon & I took Marion home about 5. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve. Richard B. rode with us from Red's. Dean went with Roscoe down to Breezy Hill. Marion & Richard rode home with us. We got home about 11:30.

Sun. Oct. 8
Cloudy & cool day. Mon went up to Ole's early in A.M. & then down to Gust's to meet with the trustees about that fence between Gust & Willard. He got home a little after 11 & then the boys & I went up to mama's. Claude's & Lester's were there too. We had a picnic dinner. Howard & Charlotte came in & ate with us. They baby is sure nice, so playful & good. We had a big time with him. The last game of the World Series. Yanks won again closing the series. Rained quite hard in the nite.

Mon. Oct. 9
Rained off & on during the A.M. Some times quite hard. Didn't rain in P.M. but was cloudy. The wind got around in the north in eve & it got quite a lot colder. Arthur & Dean helped Louie K. vaccinate his hogs in A.M. for hog cholera. They did odd jobs in P.M. I got a letter from Cecilia today.

Tues. Oct. 10
Not very nice in A.M. Cloudy & cool but it cleared off in P.M. & was very nice. Cool though. The men got a load of corn in A.M. & started work on the foundation for the garage. Marion was over awhile in P.M. We went up town awhile in eve. He went with us.

Wed. Oct. 11
Quite a nice day only pretty windy. I washed & ironed. Arthur helped Harold S. fill silo. He got home about 4. Marion was over & helped Mon & Dean work at the foundation of the garage.

Thurs. Oct. 12
Nice day but cool. Marion came over & they put in the cement foundation of the garage. Mon took me up to Gladys A's about 12:30 & I went up to the M.E. church basement to a shower for Zoa. Quite a large crowd out. We had a Mock Wedding. It sure was a scream. Everyone dressed up every way. I was the grooms mother. The bridal party ate at the bride's table. We sure had a swell lunch. They gave Zoa money too get what ever she wanted. Pearl & Darlene were over awhile in A.M. Little daughter born to Mr. & Mrs. Paul Reed tonite. It rained in the nite & got much colder. Little son born to Katherine & Warren P. today. Jon Robert.

Fri. Oct. 13
Cool windy day. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah about 10: A.M. I got my hair fixed. We got back about 1:40 & I stopped at Dorothy S's. to Club & Mon & Dean went back to B.O. too wait until Club was over. Not so many out but we had a good time & a good lunch. Mighty cold nite. Froze hard even the ground froze quite a bit.

Sat. Oct. 14
21° above zero. Quite a nice day but still cool. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. The boys got a jag of corn in A.M. & then they all went out in P.M. & got a big load. The boys went to town in eve but Mon & I stayed home. Pretty cool nite but not as bad as last nite.

Sun. Oct. 15
Quite a nice day but the wind was cool. Dean went hunting. Mon & I went up to the Pavilion at B.O. to the Plymouth Catholic Ladies dinner. Sure had a swell dinner & an enormous crowd. Saw lots I knew. We got home about 5:30. Belva Manning & Geo. Smith were married this P.M.

Mon. Oct. 16
Not such a nice day. Windy & cool. Rather cloudy most of the day too. Marion came over in A.M. & they got ready to put the floor in the garage & they did that in P.M. Finished up the cement work I guess. We got an announcement card from Warren & Katherine. Cold nite.

Tues. Oct. 17
21° above zero again this morn. Dandy day. Warmed up quite a little. I washed & ironed. Mon went up & helped Fritz all day. He is building a corn crib. The boys husked corn all day.

Wed. Oct. 18
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Up into the 70°. Dean husked corn all day. Mon & Arthur started the framework of the hen house. Pearl & Darlene were here a minute early in A.M. I went up to the Lutheran L.A.S. Sale & Dinner with them about 11. Doris & the kiddies went to. They sure had a swell dinner & a large crowd. They had some very nice things for their sale too.

Thurs. Oct. 19
Mighty warm day again. Mon & Arthur worked at the hen house. Dean husked corn in A.M. & he & I cleaned out the back room in P.M. Ole A. came down in P.M. & started plowing for us. Mon & I went over to Krumms' a minute.

Fri. Oct. 20
Nice day, only at noon it clouded up & sprinkled a little but it soon cleared off & was nice the rest of the day. Ole plowed today. Dean husked. Mon & Arthur worked at the hen house in A.M. & helped Dean husk corn in P.M. Mon & I went over to Marion's a little while in eve. Gladys & Betty came down after Ole about 5 & were here awhile.

Sat. Oct. 21
Dandy nice day only rather windy. They moved the garage onto the foundation in A.M. Marion came over & stayed for dinner & went to Decorah with us in P.M. Arthur didn't go. We all went up town in eve but Arthur. I went up to the Pavilion awhile. Pretty cold up there. Didn't have any crowd so no dance.

Sun. Oct. 22
Dandy nice day. We took our dinner & went over to Marion's & spent the day. Albert's were there too. Had a dandy dinner. The boys went coon hunting with the Dawley boys in eve & got 1 coon.

Mon. Oct. 23
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Rather cool though. Marion came over & they all worked at the hen house. Mon took Marion home about 4:30. Ole finished plowing at noon & was here for dinner. Howard Bradley was here for dinner too. Roscoe & Clifford D. came over for supper & bro't Marion too. We had the coon for supper. Tom came over awhile in eve. They went home about 10.

Tues. Oct. 24
Nice warm day but terribly windy & the dust blew badly. Marion was over all day helping with the hen house. The boys husked corn.

Rather dark gloomy day. I washed. Marion was here today. Arthur husked corn. Dean helped Harry shred in A.M. & Howard in P.M. I helped Pearl in P.M. Doris was there too.

Not very nice day. Rather rainy most of the day. Marion was here today. Dean husked corn.

Fri. Oct. 27
Rather cold day. Arthur worked at the hen house. Dean husked corn today. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed.

Sat. Oct. 28
Cool day. Sun shone some. Arthur went to Prosper early in A.M. Mon & Dean finished husking this piece of corn by the house this A.M. Arthur took Ludwig to Mabel in P.M. with their car. Mon took me to B.O. about 2 P.M. The Club had their annual oyster supper at the Hall & we sure had a crowd. Elsie, Miriam & I cooked oysters. We cleared over $27. Mon & Dean came up town in eve. Dean went with Roscoe. Mon & I got home about 10:30. It rained some in the nite.

Sun. Oct. 29
Cloudy most of the day & cold. We went up to Lesters for dinner. Claude's & Mama were there too. We had a picnic dinner & a good one. Lesters & Isa came down here about 5 & were here until about 8. We had another little calf today but it died. Snowed in the nite until the ground was white.

Mon. Oct. 30
Quite a nice day but windy. Mon & Dean husked corn & Arthur worked at the hen house. We put the hens & pullets in the new hen house in eve. We had 79 pullets. Another little calf today.

Tues. Oct. 31
Cold, windy day. Mon & Dean husked corn. Arthur fixed fence & did odd jobs. We went up town a little while in eve. The boys & I went up home. Had a big time with Jerome. He is sure cute. Richard Rolfs was killed by his tractor about 6 P.M. today.

Wed. Nov. 1
Not very nice day. Snowed off & on all day & pretty windy & cold. The men husked corn in A.M. & then they filled in the cellar way & banked the house & put up papers on the doors. Froze hard tonite. Mama went to Davenport on the bus this noon.

Thurs. Nov. 2
Quite a nice day. The men husked corn. I washed & ironed. Otto Koenig was here in A.M. too see about the R.E.A. We had another little calf this A.M. & it was nearly frozen so they bro't it in the house & warmed it up. Froze hard tonite. Howard was over & spent the eve. Little daughter born to Fern & Howard Rollins this A.M. Shirley Ann.

Quite a nice day. Dean helped Howard stack corn fodder in A.M. Mon & Arthur husked corn & Dean helped in P.M. Richard Rolf's & Mrs. Larry Keefe were buried today.

Sat. Nov. 4
Quite a nice warm day. The men husked in A.M. & we all went to Decorah in P.M. Quite a crowd in town. Dean went to B.O. in eve.

Sun. Nov. 5
Dandy nice day. The boys were gone most of the day hunting & fishing. We were alone all day.

Mon. Nov. 6
Dandy nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & rained some. Not very much. The boys husked corn in A.M. & Mon went to Mabel too get some oats ground & they all husked in P.M. I washed & ironed.

Tues. Nov. 7
Nice day but cool & windy. The men husked corn today. I patched most of P.M. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in eve. Cold nite. Rather windy.

Wed. Nov. 8
Nice day. Not so cold. The men finished husking about 3:30 P.M. Clouded up in eve & looked rainy but didn't rain until in the nite & then not much. Quite a bit of thunder & lightning & wind. We went up town awhile in eve. Marion went with us from Ludwig's.

Thurs. Nov. 9
Quite a warm day but windy & cloudy most of the day. The boys hauled dirt & filled in around the water tank in A.M. Dean helped Howard awhile in P.M. Arthur did odd jobs. Mon went to Prosper about 8 A.M. to bring Marion back home (He sold his hogs). They got back here for dinner & then Mon took Marion home. He came back home & then went to B.O. & didn't get home all nite. It rained quite hard late in P.M. & eve & then got colder & froze up. They had a corn husking bee for Dorothy Rolfs today but none of us went. Too much other business.

Fri. Nov. 10
Nice bright day but windy & cold. Arthur drove Quandahl's car to Decorah for [Mus.?] in P.M. Mon took Dorothy S. & I to Club at Elsie's & then he went on up town. Dean was along too. Quite a crowd out & a dandy lunch. The boys & I went up to the school house in eve to their program. Had a good program & a very large crowd. Had a good lunch too. Pretty cold nite.

Sat. Nov. 11
Dandy nice day. Got quite warm. Dean helped Dave until about 4 P.M. Arthur cleaned the hen house in A.M. & tore down the old one in P.M. Mon put on the storm windows in P.M.

Sun. Nov. 12
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. The boys went down to Dawley's early in A.M. & Roscoe came home with them. Uncle Aaron came over in A.M. & was here for dinner. He went pheasant hunting with the boys after dinner & then on home. Leonard W. came over in P.M. too & helped hunt but they didn't get any birds. Mon & I went up to see the baby at Howard & Fern's in P.M. She is sure a dandy nice big girl. Merle's were there too & their cousins & Aunt & uncle. Arthur took Roscoe home after we got home. He went coon hunting with the Dawley boys in eve & bro't 2 coons home. Small ones though.

Mon. Nov. 13
Dandy nice warm day. The boys helped Dave saw wood. They got home about 2 P.M. Mon & I dressed coon in A.M. Marion came as we were eating dinner & then we went to Decorah. I got my hair fixed. Howard was here awhile in A.M.

Tues. Nov. 14
Dandy nice warm day. I washed & ironed. The men started stacking corn fodder today. Roy Wernett was here awhile in eve. Ruth O'Brien & Ronald Webb were married today.

Wed. Nov. 15
Beautiful day. The men stacked corn fodder today. I did a little of everything. Patched most of P.M. Howard was over & spent the eve. Mama came home from Davenport today.

Thurs. Nov. 16
Another beautiful day. Pretty warm. The men finished stacking the fodder this P.M. Pearl was here awhile in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. Went over & got Marion & took him along. They had a euchre tournament tonite at B.O. & Mon played. I went up home. Olive & the boys were there too. We got home about 12. Ole & Ludwig rode home with us too as well as Marion so we had a load.

Fri. Nov. 17
Grand day only a little cooler. Arthur started plowing this A.M. Mon & Dean did odd jobs.

Sat. Nov. 18
Dandy day. Arthur plowed. Dean cleaned the hog house & the shed in A.M. & Mon went to B.O. & then burned some brush when he got home. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah in P.M. Stopped to see Mrs. Miller on our way down town. She is sick in bed & has been for 3 weeks. She had a bad heart attack. Dean went to B.O. in eve. Cool nite.

Sun. Nov. 19
Quite a nice day. Some cooler. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. & spent the day. Marion's birthday & Ole, Ludwig & Mon spent the day with him playing cards. Dean went over there in P.M. too. Arthur & I went to Decorah to a show in P.M. "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". It was sure fine.

Mon. Nov. 20
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off later & was quite a nice day. Quite a little cooler though. Dean helped Dave haul in corn fodder all day. Arthur finished plowing in A.M. & went hunting in P.M. Mon went to B.O. awhile in P.M.

Tues. Nov. 21
Rather cloudy most of the day, but not too cold. Dean helped Dave in A.M. They finished at noon. Mon had too meet the rest of the trustees early at Tom Harlon's & Clem Gossman's about cholera hogs. He got home at noon. The men hauled up wood & hauled in straw in P.M. The boys went to a shower for Ralph & Audry at Breezy Hill in eve. Pearl was here in A.M. & Howard in eve.

Wed. Nov. 22
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The boys didn't do much of anything. Mon went to B.O. awhile in A.M.

Thurs. Nov. 23
Rather cloudy most of the day. The sun shone some during the middle of the day. Quite cool early in A.M. but warmed up quite a bit. Sprinkled some early in A.M. & again in eve. Got colder in eve again. Mon went to B.O. awhile in A.M. The boys cut up dead stuff in the grove. They went & helped Fritz husk corn in P.M. I went over to Pearls awhile in P.M. Grace was there too. Ralph Greenslade & Audry Manning were married today.

Fri. Nov. 24
Not very nice day. Rather cloudy all day & misty. It rained some in P.M. The men helped Fritz finish husking in A.M. Mon took me to Club at Muriel T's. in P.M. Quite a few out. We had a good lunch. I rode back to B.O. with Gerthrude E. & then on home with Mon.

Sat. Nov. 25
Quite a nice day, but cool. Mon, Dean & I went up & got mama about 11 & then went to Decorah. We stopped at Mrs. Miller's a minute. She is a little better. Quite a crowd in town in P.M. We met Marion up by the mail boxes on our way home & he came home to supper with us & then we all went up town in eve. The boys went to Breezy Hill & didn't come home with us. Shower for Ruth & Ronald down there tonite. Pretty cold nite.

Sun. Nov. 26
Nice day. Didn't do much of anything. Clifford D. was here for dinner & he & Arthur went hunting in P.M. Dean went up to Ludwig's in P.M. Roscoe D. & Harold Bently were here & spent the eve.

Mon. Nov. 27
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men hauled up wood. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve. Mama had bought a goose from Ruth K. & we took it up to her.

Dandy nice day. The men hauled up wood.

Nice day. The men finished hauling up wood in A.M. & the boys helped Howard saw wood in P.M. Mon took some oats to Mabel in P.M. & had them ground.

Thurs. Nov. 30
Not such a nice day. Cloudy & damp & cool. Got pretty foggy in late P.M. & rained some in eve. We went up home & spent the day. Claude's, Lester's, Dell's, Aunt Lissa & Aunt Till were there too. Had a grand dinner. Happy called Mon about 6 P.M. that he had broken his car & wanted Mon to come & haul it to B.O. so he went about 6:30.

Fri. Dec. 1
Not very nice day. Misty & damp all day. Sometimes it rained quite hard too. Arthur went to B.O. early in A.M. & mama came home with him. Ed D. sawed wood for us today. Didn't get started until 11 A.M. & finished about 4:30. Fritz, Howard & Harry helped. Pearl & Darlene came over & ate dinner & spent the P.M. Mon & I took mama home in eve. Ed went up town with us. It got much colder in the night & froze hard.

Sat. Dec. 2
Cold, windy day. Marion came over about 11 A.M. & we all went to Decorah but Arthur. Pretty cold down there. Large crowd in town. Stopped at Mrs. Millers a minute on our way home. She is some better. Mon & Dean went to B.O. in eve & then Mon went on to Canton with the rest of the trustees to a meeting too see about buying a fire truck.

Sun. Dec. 3
Cloudy cold day. Spit snow off & on all day but didn't amount to anything. The men went over to Marion's in A.M. & drove the calves home. Marion helped them & then Arthur took him home & stayed awhile.

Mon. Dec. 4
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. The men did a little of everything. Mon went to B.O. in P.M.

Tues. Dec. 5
Dandy nice day. The men did odd jobs. Mon went down to Fred & Lange's in P.M. & over to Howard's too.

Wed. Dec. 6
Pretty warm day. The warmest day in history in Iowa for this time of the year. Mon went down to Fred Lange's early in A.M. & then they went out getting people too sign a petition too change the mail route. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed. Mon went to Canton again in eve to a meeting about the fire truck. Mighty windy nite.

Thurs. Dec. 7
Mighty windy in A.M. but not so bad in P.M. Not so cold. Mon took me to B.O. about 11 A.M. to the M.E.L.A.S. Sale & dinner. Large crowd out & a swell dinner. Dean went up town with us & stayed up town all day. Arthur came up & got us about 4:30. Richard B. was here awhile in A.M.

Fri. Dec. 8
Dandy nice day. Mon sold 21 hogs to Lloyd K. this A.M. They weighed 4240 @ $4.90 per cwt & bro't $207.75. Chas. W. hauled them. We went to Mabel in P.M. & got the check cashed. I stopped at mama's a little while in P.M. on our way home. Lester & Isa were here for dinner & then we went up there for supper. They got oysters & we took up the milk. Had a good supper. We got home about 10. John Wicks died about 6:30 P.M.

Sat. Dec. 9
Dandy nice day. We went to Decorah about 11 A.M. & spent the rest of the day. Large crowd in town. We went up town awhile in eve. Mon & I came home about 10 but the boys went other places & didn't get home so early.

Sun. Dec. 10
Nice day. Mon went down to Charley W's in A.M. awhile & the boys went along. They walked on over to Geo Wernett's from there. Geo's are back from California to live here again. They are living in Ed Matthews house until the first of March & then on to Lizzie's place. Mon & I went to B.O. awhile in P.M. I went up to Mama's. Marie, Marvin & Leonard were there too. Marie came home last Monday. Arthur & Roy W. went to Decorah to the Show in eve. Howard was over in A.M.

Mon. Dec. 11
Nice bright day but mighty windy & the wind was cold. Mon, Arthur & I went over & got Lizzie about 1 P.M. & went to B.O. to Mr. Wick's funeral. We helped haul the flowers & vases up to the church. Very large crowd. Not near enough room in the A.C. church. Mon was a pall bearer. Lizzie & I went down to the house as soon as the sermon was over & we helped there. They served lunch to so many of the relatives. Mama helped too. Louie K. was here in A.M.

Tues. Dec. 12
Nice day. Looked stormy early in A.M. but cleared off nice. I washed & ironed. The men did odd jobs. Howard was over & spent the eve. The wind blew very hard all nite & it got much colder. Dean worked at tearing the old separator apart.

Wed. Dec. 13
Nice bright day but cold. We all went to B.O. about 11 & then Arthur, Mama & I went to Decorah. I got my hair fixed. We got back to mama's about 2:30 & I stayed there awhile. We got home about 4:30. Mighty cold nite, but still.

Thurs. Dec. 14
Nice day. Dean worked at the old separator in P.M. The men hauled up wood in A.M.

Fri. Dec. 15
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. I rode up to Ole's at noon with Mon & the boys. Mon stopped there too, but the boys went on. Arthur went to Mabel to the dentist. Dean found Chas. W. & they hauled a load of old iron to Decorah for Dean. Gladys & I went to Club at Violets. Mon & Ole rode up town with us. Alice S. went too. Quite a few out. Swell lunch. Election. Inez W. Pres. Agnes W. V. Pres. Hazel B. Sec. Violet Ass't Sec. Laura Berge Treas. I rode home from B.O. with Arthur & Mon. Dean didn't get home until in eve. Arthur & I took Mon to B.O. & then we went down to Claude's school to their program. It was very good & they had a good crowd & lunch. We got back to B.O. about 11 & I went to the Hall. The I.O.O.F. were having a dance. Mon was there already. Good crowd at the dance & had a good time. Leonard & Grace Gossman & Mr. Good & Milo played. We got home about 1:30.

Sat. Dec. 16
Dandy nice day. We went to Decorah about 11 & spent the day. Santa Claus day in Decorah & there sure was a crowd. I went to dinner with Ruth P. & Mr. & Mrs. Kinney. Went up with Ruth, Mrs. K. & their little boy too see Santa but I didn't stay very long. Sure some bunch of kids. We got home about 4:30. After supper Mon & I went back to Decorah too see the city lit up for Xmas & it was beautiful. The boys did the chores & then Dean walked to B.O. Mon & I went up there a little while on our way home from Decorah. Got home about 9:30.

Rather cloudy most of the day. Not very cold though. Didn't do much of anything. Everyone lazy.

Mon. Dec. 18
Nice day. I washed & ironed. The men did a little of everything. Snowed in the nite.

Tues. Dec. 19
Regular blizzard at times. Not too cold though but it got colder at nite. We went up town about 11 A.M. Dean & I went up home & Arthur came up there for dinner. The boys & I came home about 4 & Mon didn't get home until some time in the nite.

Wed. Dec. 20
Rather cold windy day. Mon was over to Howard's in A.M. & Darlene came home with him. Pearl & Howard went to Decorah & she stayed here until they came home about 3:30. Mon & Dean went to B.O. awhile in P.M. with Jessie Dawley. I got a letter from Cecilia today.

Thurs. Dec. 21
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Mon & I went over to Howard's in P.M. We dressed 3 ducks. Grace, Leonard B. & Earl Richards came down while we were there too. Pearl gave us a duck.

Fri. Dec. 22
Nice day. Mon went to B.O. in A.M. He & Dean took me up to the school house in P.M. to the program & they went on to B.O. The program was good & there were quite a few there. I rode home with Pearl.

Sat. Dec. 23
Nice day. Thawed quite a little. We went to Decorah about 11. Clifford Dawley came over & rode down with us. Large crowd in town. Run around with Ruth P. quite a while. Dean stayed down town & didn't get home until in the nite. We went up town in eve. Arthur & I went up home a few minutes. Dell & Mettie came for mama while we were there. She is going down to Aunt Lissa's too stay until after Xmas. Arthur went on some where so Mon & I came home alone about 10:30. Dave was here awhile in A.M. & Howard in eve.

Sun. Dec. 24
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Mon went over to Marion's awhile in A.M. & Dean over to Howard's. We had our duck for dinner today. Mon went to Canton about 6 P.M. with Howard after Willis Kinney.

Mon. Dec. 25
Dandy nice day. We went to Aunt Lissa's & spent the day. Mama, Lester's, Dell's, Aunt Till & Raymond. Neva, Bobbie & little Neva were there too. Raymond's had a little neighbor boy "Billie" with them. The baby is sure nice. We had a swell dinner. Got home about 4:30. I got some nice Xmas presents this year. Mon & Dean were over to Howards in A.M.

Tues. Dec. 26
Not very nice day. Didn't do much of anything. Albert, Florence & Norris were here in P.M. awhile.

Wed. Dec. 27
Quite a nice day. I washed & did part of the ironing. Marvin came over in A.M. too stay awhile. Mon & the boys went to B.O. in P.M.

Thurs. Dec. 28
Nice day. We went to B.O. about 11 A.M. Florence had M.E.L.A.S. at the church parlors for dinner & I helped her some. Mon was up there for dinner but the boys went up to mama's. Marion rode up town with us. We all went to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed. We went up town in eve. Arthur went to Lodge. Marvin & I went up to Mama's. Lester's were there for awhile also Wilma. Olive came up a little late.

Fri. Dec. 29
Rather cloudy most of the day. Tried to snow a little. Mon & Marvin went over to Happy's in A.M. & got a half a hog Mon bought of him. They stopped at Marion's awhile too. Mon went to Canton in P.M. Dean helped Howard chop wood today. Mon & I went to B.O. in eve to the I.O.O.F. dance. Fritz went along too. Quite a crowd out. Had a pretty good time. Foltz's played. Got mighty cold in the nite. We got home about 1:30.

Sat. Dec. 30
Pretty cold, windy day. Coldest day we have had. Dean helped Howard again today. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. & Marvin went with him & from there home. Arthur went to Decorah to a Show in eve. Cold nite.

Sun. Dec. 31
10° below this A.M. Cold, windy day but bright. Worked around all day. Dean was over to Howard's in A.M. & went skating in P.M. Richard B. was here in P.M.



Appendix


On our trip west we left home at 5:30 A.M. Thurs. Aug. 3, 1939 & arrived back home at 4 P.M. Wed. Aug. 16. We covered 2720 miles. Used 155 gals. of gas averaging 17.5 gal. per miles. We paid $32.27 for gas $21.57 for lodging & some other things. Of course we spent some more than that for things we did not set down.
