Sat. Jan. 1
Quite a nice bright day. Wind rather cool though. Mon went over to Marions awhile
in A.M. Dean went over to Howards in P.M. I didn't do much of anything.
Rather lazy.
Sun. Jan. 2
Nice day but rather cool. Mon went over after Arthur in A.M. Dean & Arthur
went down on the creek skating in P.M. Mon & I took Arthur over to Walt's
about 4:30. Walter W. was here in eve. Howard was here awhile after noon.
Mon. Jan. 3
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy day. Harry Q.
was here before breakfast. Mon helped him saw in A.M. & Howard in P.M. Happy
& Marion were here a few minutes at supper time.
Tues. Jan. 4
Dandy nice day. Mon helped Happy saw wood today. He got home about 4. I washed
& ironed. Howard was here awhile in A.M. Dean drove the team up to Red's
in A.M. Clem Brace ground feed here in P.M. We went up town in eve. Dean &
I went up home. He went down town awhile. Raymond Young, Joe Moran & Cecil
Wicks were there auditing the I.O.O.F. books. I got my Xmas present from Arthur
tonite. He had left it at Mama's. Cream or egg whip & it is a dandy.
Wed. Jan. 5
Dandy nice day. We went up & got Bea about 10:30 & went to Decorah.
I run around most of the day with her, getting the Olson kids place & business
straightened up for them. We got home about 5. Howard was over in eve. Pearl
is down with her folks this week.
Thurs. Jan. 6
Nice bright day but cold & windy. Geo W. was over most of A.M. & was
over again after dinner. Mon traded him a heifer toward a harness & seeder.
They took the heifer over there after dinner & bro't the harness &
seeder back. Arthur was here a little while in A.M. & so was Dave. Fred
& Arthur W. Philip S., & Howard were all here in P.M. Howard & Arthur
were here in eve awhile.
Fri. Jan. 7
Nice bright day but cold & windy. Mon went over to Marions in A.M. awhile.
We went to B.O. in P.M. Gladys, Betty Palmer (she stays at Ole's), Vera
Wernett & Dorothy S. went with us. We girls went to Club at Iona's.
Quite a crowd out. Had a swell lunch. Got home about 5. Neal G. rode home with
us too, so we had quite a load. Dave was over awhile after we got home. Dean
went over to Howard's in eve.
Sat. Jan. 8
Nice cold day. We went up town in P.M. Stopped at Red's on our way up
& Marion rode up town from there with us. I went up home awhile. Ole &
Betty rode home from town with us too. Neal G. & Gordon H. were here in
eve.
Sun. Jan. 9
Nice day, but cool. Arthur & Roy came down & spent the day with us.
Dean went to Bluffton skating with Ray Mc.
Mon. Jan. 10
Cloudy, gloomy day. Started snowing in P.M. & snowed off & on. Snowed
most of the nite I guess. We went up town in P.M. I went up home awhile. Isa
was there too. Howard was over in eve. Warren called in eve. Could hear him
just fine.
Tues. Jan. 11
Snowed quite hard early in A.M. & then snowed off & on all day. Not
very cold. Mon & Dean went over to Marion's in A.M. but he wasn't
home.
Wed. Jan. 12
Not such a nice day. Quite a blizzard at times. Wind blew quite hard. Sun shone
some. Not so cold though. Mon & Dean went over to Marion's in A.M.
We went up town in P.M. I went up home. Olive & Marvin & Isa were there
also.
Thurs. Jan. 13
Cloudy most of the day. Not too cold. Mon & Dean went over to Lovliens &
McCauleys in A.M. Dean went over to Howards in P.M. We went up town in eve.
I went up home. Mon went over & got Arthur & he & Ray Mc. came home
with us.
Fri. Jan. 14
Not such a bad day where we were the sun didn't shine. It tried to snow
at times. We got up about 5 & Mon, Arthur & I left here about 6:30,
went up & got Lottie Murdock & started for Chicago about 7 A.M. Found
quite a bit of snow & ice on the paving so we didn't go very fast.
Left Lottie at St. Charles (with Irene) & we got into Chicago about 4:30.
Didn't find Warren's very easy so we did some driving around before
we got there. Got there around 5 or a little after. Warren got there about 5:30.
Stanley & Katherine came over & spent the eve. Ray Mc. is staying with
Dean.
Sat. Jan. 15
Quite warm but no sun shine. We had breakfast & then Warren, Mon, Arthur
& I set out to see the City. Saw a lot too. Drove our car. Went in to Sears
Roebuck & I got a dress & Mon & Arthur got rubbers. We rode around
the stock yards & went thro' the Swift Packing plant & went out
by Lake Michigan. Got back to Warrens about 4:30. We all went over to Stanleys
about 6 & had dinner there & spent the eve. Got back to Warren's
about 11.
Sun. Jan. 16
Sun shone a little in A.M. but that was all. Stanley came over about 9 &
the boys talked business awhile & then Stanley took the men & I for
another ride around the City thro' the Field Museum & Aquarium &
places we didn't see the day before. We went out to the Airport first
of all & saw a big 15 passenger plane load up & take off for Pittsburg.
Got back to Warrens about 5 & had dinner. Stan stayed for dinner but left
shortly after. We went down to the Chicago Theater in eve. Hollywood Hotel was
the play & then they had a swell floor show. It was grand. Got back to Warrens
about 12 & to bed.
Mon. Jan. 17
Cloudy day all day. Left Warrens about 8 A.M. Stopped at St. Charles & got
Lottie. Christie came home with us too. Stopped at different towns on our home.
Viewed Gen. Grants home at Galena Ill. Roads were pretty icy for some distance
out of Chicago but we had fine pavement most of our way home. Got to B.O. about
6. Left Lottie & Christie off there. Went up home a minute & then took
Arthur over to Walt's. Got home about 7. Howard & Walt W. were here when
we got here & Happy & Marion came soon after.
Tues. Jan. 18
Everything covered with frost. Cloudy day again. Not cold though. Marion called
about 9 & wanted Mon to take him to La Crosse so Mon left here about 10
A.M. Ray went home this A.M. too. I scrubbed the floors & that is about
all I did do. Mr. & Mrs. Lovlien went with Mon too & they stayed down
as well as Marion. Mon got home about 6. Pearl was here a little while just
after he got home.
Wed. Jan. 19
Cloudy day. Not cold. We went up town in P.M. I went up home. Isa was there
awhile too. Mon went over to Marions after we got home, but he didn't
come home today. Happy went to La Crosse today. Marion took a treatment this
A.M. & didn't feel like coming home this P.M. Howard was over in eve.
Thurs. Jan. 20
Another cloudy day. Thawed. Mon went to Prosper in A.M. a few minutes to see
Lloyd K. We went over to Geo. W's. in eve. Had a little surprise party
on them. Howard's, Fred's, all the Blaess's, Happy & Leonard
Mc. were there. Had a good time. Got home about 1. Had another little calf today.
Fri. Jan. 21
Dark gloomy day again. Thawed some. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M.
to build the fire & take care of his chickens. Happy went to La Crosse early
this A.M. & Uncle Marion came home with him. Mr. L. had an operation for
gall stones this A.M. & got thro' it as well as could be expected.
We went to B.O. in P.M. I went to Club at Cecilia Norlie's. Large crowd
out & a swell lunch. Got home & did up the chores & went back to
B.O. to an I.O.O.F. dance. Quite a few out. Got home about 2.
Sat. Jan. 22
Dandy nice day. The sun shone & it thawed a lot. Mon went over to Marions
in A.M. We went up town about 1 P.M. & got papa & Marion & went
to Decorah. Large crowd in town. We got home about 5. Got new radio batteries.
Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Sun. Jan. 23
Another nice day. Mon & Dean went & got Arthur in A.M. & Mon &
I took him back about 4. Ruby got home from La Crosse this P.M. & we stopped
& visited with her awhile. She is mighty glad to get home, but can't
get around very well with her crutches yet. Rained in eve & turned to snow
in the nite. Got some colder.
Mon. Jan. 24
Mon's 43rd Birthday. Regular blizzard all day but not very cold. Got pretty
cold during the night through. Charley Wernett was here in A.M. early. They
started getting milk here today for the baby. Howard was here in A.M. &
again in P.M. Mon took the car to B.O. in A.M. He was afraid the roads would
fill up. He didn't get home until after we had supper Ole A. bro't
him & was he stewed. Don't make a fellow feel very good.
Tues. Jan. 25
Bad day. Blizzard & cold. Didn't do much of anything but try to keep
warm. Charley was here this A.M. Howard was over in P.M. Our mill wheel got
badly smashed in the wind & the pump froze up so we couldn't get any
water. Mon & Dean carried some from Howard's for the house. Pretty
cold. Windy night.
Wed. Jan. 26
Pretty cold day but sunny & bright. Mon walked to B.O. in A.M. & got
some pump tools from Chas. Reed. He bro't the car home. We got the pump
thawed out & got some water pumped with the engine when the sucker rod broke
so that finished it.
Thurs. Jan. 27
Quite a nice day but cold. Roger Emery came early this A.M. to fix the pump
& they were just going out to work when they gave the alarm that the old
Koenig house was on fire so they all went to the fire. The house burned to the
ground but there was so much help they got everything out of the house. The
Mrs. Baulmer & the children went up to Mama's & stayed until in
P.M. Mon & the boys got back in time to get the pump fixed before dinner.
Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M. to see about getting the wind mill fixed.
Dave was here in A.M.
Fri. Jan. 28
Nice part of the day. Rather cloudy part of the time. I washed in A.M. We went
to B.O. after dinner. I went to Mrs. Walt Tillapaugh's funeral at the
M.E. church in P.M. Arthur, Philip, Alberta & I sang "Come Unto Me",
"Over Just Beyond the Hilltops", & "Farewell Mother."
The pump men came up from Decorah & took the mill wheel down.
Sat. Jan. 29
Quite a nice day. Not quite so cold. It clouded up late in P.M. & rained
& snowed in the night. Wind started to blow in the nite & turned into
a blizzard. Mon & I took Marion & Fritz to La Crosse. Left home about
10, stopped in B.O. so Marion could get a shave. I stopped at mama's. We got
to La Crosse about noon. Drove right out to the Lutheran Hospital. Had lunch
across the street from the Hospital & then Marion went to see his Dr. &
we went to see Mr. Lovlien. They were sure glad to see us. We stayed a while
there & then we went down town & run around awhile & then started
for home at 3 P.M. Got back to B.O. at 4:30. Stayed there a little while &
then came home. Marion came home to supper with us & Mon took him home about
8. Dean went to B.O. in day time. Arthur W. came & got him in eve &
they went to B.O. & then skating up on Red's pond.
Sun. Jan. 30
Regular blizzard again & quite cold. We didn't do much of anything.
Dean was over to Howards a few minutes in P.M. Richard & Leonard B. were
past here 3 or 4 times during the day. They got stuck going home & Dean
& Mon went & pushed them thro'.
Mon. Jan. 31
Quite a nice day, but cold. The snow plow came thro' early this A.M. Didn't
do so much today either. Howard & Arthur W. were here awhile in eve &
then Dean went over to Harry's & up to Ludwig's with Arthur.
Tues. Feb. 1
Quite a nice day, although the sun didn't shine very much. Got warmer
in P.M. Lloyd K. & Tommie Ronan came this A.M. & appraised the stock
& feed. Mon went over to Marions awhile after they went. We went & got
Fritz & Ruth in eve & we all went over to Walt's & spent the
eve. Ruby is quite a bit better. She looks much better too. We had another little
calf today.
Wed. Feb. 2
Cloudy day again. Didn't do much of anything. Dean went skating in eve
& Mon went to B.O. a few minutes.
Thurs. Feb. 3
Cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was very nice in P.M. Mon went over
to Marion's in A.M. He & Fritz went to Lodge in eve.
Fri. Feb. 4
Cloudy, misty, rainy day. Rained froze on the road & paving so it was quite
slippery. We went to B.O. in P.M. I went to Club at Lorna Prust's. Quite
a crowd out & a swell lunch. Pretty slippery walking around town. We got
home about 5.
Sat. Feb. 5
Sun shone some in A.M. Quite warm day. Rained quite hard late in P.M. &
eve. Quite a bit of thunder & lightning. Howard was over awhile in eve.
Dean & Arthur W. went visiting in eve. Mrs. Wernett walked up in A.M. to
get the milk & stayed awhile.
Sun. Feb. 6
Not very nice in A.M. Regular blizzard at times. Not very cold though. Cleared
off & was quite nice later in P.M. Floyd Blaess was here awhile about noon.
Mon. Feb. 7
Quite a nice day. Thawed a lot. I washed & ironed. Mon was over to Marions
a few minutes in A.M. Tom Dawley was here for dinner & Louie K. was here
in P.M.
Tues. Feb. 8
My 46th Birthday. Not such a nice day. The sun shone some but not much. Thawed
a lot. We went up town & spent the day. I was up home. Mon & Dean were
there for dinner but spent the day down town. Isa & Mrs. Baumler were at
mama's in P.M. We came home the north road & it was pretty muddy.
Gordon Haugen rode home with us. We were invited over to Howard's in eve.
They had a surprise party for Fred W. & I. Fred is 53 today. Quite a few
there in spite of the bad roads. Played cards & danced. Had a good time.
Got home about 2:30.
Wed. Feb. 9
Not very nice day. Not so cold in A.M. but got colder during the day. Started
freezing in P.M. & froze hard during the night. Didn't do much of
anything. Mr. Lovlien came home today. Stella Headington & Gene Headington
were married today.
Thurs. Feb. 10
Cloudy, gloomy day again. Rained & froze in eve & nite. Mon & I
went over to see Henry L. in A.M. & stayed there for dinner. Stopped at
Marion's a minute on our way home. Walter W. rode over here with us from
there. We got home about 2 & then Mon walked down across to Elmer G's.
& helped him saw in P.M. He got home about 4:30. Mon & Fritz went to
Lodge in eve.
Fri. Feb. 11
Another cloudy, gloomy day. Mighty slippery in A.M. but thawed during the day.
Mrs. Wernett walked up after the milk this P.M. Dean went over to Howard's
in P.M. Mon & I went to Bluffton about 5 & did some trading. The roads
are not bad down that way. The Lange hill was a little greasy but we got up
all right without chains.
Sat. Feb. 12
Cloudy, gloomy day. Rained quite hard at times. Quite a bit of hard thunder
in P.M. We went to B.O. in P.M. awhile. I went up home. Marion rode down to
the mail boxes with us. They had a farewell party for Haugen's in eve,
but Mon didn't want to go so Dean walked up there.
Sun. Feb. 13
Gloomy day again. Rather cool in A.M. but not bad. Got much colder late in P.M.
& eve. Froze very hard. Cleared off late in P.M. & was a beautiful moonlight
eve. We were alone all day. Dean went over to Howard's awhile in P.M.
Mighty muddy before it started to freeze.
Mon. Feb. 14
Nice cold day. Wind blew quite hard. Thawed a little. Didn't do much of
anything. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Tues. Feb. 15
Sun shone part of the day. Rather cold. Mon went over to Marion's about
9:30 & got him & then came back here & we got ready & all went
to La Crosse. Stopped in B.O. & got the oil changed in the car. I went up
home while they were doing that. Left B.O. about 12. Got up there about 1:30.
Marion got to see the Dr. at 2 & then all of us but Dean went & had
a lunch & then went down town & run around until 4 & then started
for home. Stopped in B.O. a few minutes on our way home. Mon got a shave &
hair cut in La Crosse. The Dr. told Marion he was O.K.
Wed. Feb. 16
Rather a cloudy cold day. The sun shone some. I washed & ironed. Dave was
over awhile in A.M. The men came out from Decorah & fixed our mill this
P.M. Mon went over to Howards awhile late in P.M.
Thurs. Feb. 17
Not very nice day. Rainy & damp. Froze & covered everything with ice.
Mighty slippery. Snowed some in the nite. Didn't do much of anything.
Fri. Feb. 18
Quite a nice day. The sun shone & thawed quite a little but the wind was
cold. We went up & got Red about 12 & started for B.O. Caught up with
Ludwig & Ida. They were having trouble with their car. The men tried to
fix it but couldn't so Ida went back to Red's & Ludwig rode
to B.O. with us. Mon & Red went to Decorah. Dean stayed in B.O. I went to
Club at Ella R's. with Howard & Fern. Quite a crowd out & a swell
lunch. We got home about 5:30. We went over to Fred W's. in eve to a Birthday
surprise party for Arthur. Quite a few there. Had a good time. Got home about
2. Howard & Dave were here in A.M. & they were both here after we got
home in P.M. Pretty cold nite.
Sat. Feb. 19
Quite a nice day. Did quite a bit of work in A.M. & we went to B.O. in P.M.
I went up home. Mon went to B.O. in eve & bro't Arthur home with him
to stay all nite. Mr. Will Baker was up this A.M. early to look the place over
too see about loaning us money to buy it. Lottie Stockman hung herself in the
barn this eve.
Sun. Feb. 20
Dandy day. Quite warm. We went down to Jane Gilbertson's to a farewell
party for them today. Lizzie rode down with us but she walked back. Quite a
few of the neighbors there. Had a good time. Had some pretty bad roads to come
over, coming home. Those hills over there were mighty muddy & slippery.
Had a flat tire coming home by Ludwigs & had to stop & fix that. Arthur
drove the car over to Walt's.
Mon. Feb. 21
Cloudy & dark all day. Didn't thaw much though. Didn't do much
of anything. Snowed quite a bit in the nite.
Tues. Feb. 22
Snowed off & on during the A.M. but cleared off about noon & was quite
nice until late in P.M. it clouded up again. Mon went over & got Dave's
car & Lizzie at noon & we went to B.O. Lottie Stockman was buried this
P.M. Arthur, Philip, Alberta & I sang "Does Jesus Care", "Going
Down the Valley", & "Abide With Me". Very large crowd
out. We got home about 4 P.M.
Wed. Feb. 23
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Dean has quite
a cold. Mon has a cold too. We didn't any of us do much of anything.
Thurs. Feb. 24
Quite a nice day. Rather cool though. I washed & ironed. The men cleaned
barns hauled in straw & fodder. Mon walked over to Marion's in P.M.
but he wasn't home. Mon didn't get any rest all nite. He coughed
most of the time.
Fri. Feb. 25
Not very nice day. Somewhat colder. Sun didn't shine. Mon doesn't
feel very good. Dean went over to Howard's in P.M. & went to Bluffton
with him. Floyd & Leonard B. were here in P.M. Arthur came down in eve &
got Dean & I & took us to B.O. The Lutheran S.S. had a Major Bowe's
Mock Radio Program at the Hall. We went to that. They had a lot of numbers &
it sure was good. Wasn't standing room in the Hall. Maxine rode home with
us. Got home about 11. Mon rested a little better tonite.
Sat. Feb. 26
Dandy nice day. Most of the snow went today. Thawed a lot. Mon doesn't
feel very good. He & Dean cleaned barns etc. I cleaned up the house a little.
Dean went over to Howards in eve.
Sun. Feb. 27
Beautiful day. Regular spring day. Thawed a lot. Mon doesn't feel very
good. Harry Q. was here in P.M. Froze hard tonite.
Mon. Feb. 28
Dandy day. Thawed a lot again today. The men cleaned the barns etc. Mon doesn't
feel very good. I washed & ironed. Howard was here in A.M. Mike Blaess'
moved up on the Wernett place & Richard moved on the Robinson place. Andrew
Haugen moved over by Ridgeway.
Tues. Mar. 1
Beautiful day. Wind blew quite hard. Thawed & dried the roads too. Charley
& Roy W. came up about 10 A.M. & butchered a beef & a hog. They
were here for dinner. Mon feels quite a bit better today. Didn't freeze
any tonite. Jane Gilbertson & family moved up on the Frank Rollins farm
today. (They bought that.) A Mr. Wilhelm moved on Jane's place.
Wed. Mar. 2
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & quite hard at time in P.M.
We cut the hog up in A.M. fixed the hams, shoulders & side meat up &
Mon & Dean drove the team to B.O. & Arthur brought the car over town
so Mon took the meat to Decorah to have it cured. I ground up lard & tried
it out in P.M. Mon & Dean got home about 5:30. Got much colder late in P.M.
& froze hard tonite.
Thurs. Mar. 3
Rather cold day although it thawed a little. Sun shone some. We worked with
the meat today. Mon went down to Charley W's. in P.M. & borrowed their
sausage grinder & we ground sausage after he got home. Canned 13 qts. of
beef & pork. Snowed in the nite.
Fri. Mar. 4
Regular blizzard at times in A.M. early. Snowed, rained & sleeted off &
on all day. We worked with the meat again today. Canned 26 qts. of beef. Club
at Ethel Reeds today but I couldn't go.
Sat. Mar. 5
Not very nice in A.M. Snowed some, but was quite nice in P.M. Cold though. Clem
Brace was here in A.M. & ground feed. The men cleaned barn & did all
such things. I scrubbed up the house some & canned 10 qts. of sausage. Dean
went over to Howard's in eve.
Sun. Mar. 6
Dandy nice day. Thawed a little. Arthur came down this A.M. & brought mama
along. They went home about 4. Et. Rice died tonite.
Mon. Mar. 7
Beautiful day, but the wind was cool. Thawed some. I washed & ironed. Mon
& Dean drove the team & sled up town. Howard was here a few minutes
early in eve. Dean was over there in eve. Froze hard tonite.
Tues. Mar. 8
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. A lot of the snow went. I went over to
Lizzie's in P.M. Audry & Delores are there now. Froze hard tonite.
Wed. Mar. 9
Nice day. Not so cold although the wind was chilly. Thawed some. We sold a couple
of steers this A.M. Glen Rollins hauled them. Mon went with him about 8 so that
left Dean with all the chores. We got the chores done & left for B.O. with
the team & wagon about 10:45. Got up home for dinner. Went down to Alberta's
right after dinner to practice. Went to Et Rice's funeral at the M.E. church
at 2 P.M. Mr. K., Philip. Alberta & I sang "Abide With Me", "Beautiful Isle
of Somewhere", & "God Will Take Care of You." Quite a crowd out. Mon came
home with us. Marion, Ludwig Q. Floyd B. & Victor Headington rode home with
us. Victor works for Ole A. We came the north way. Had another little calf tonite.
The steers weighed 1180 lbs. @ $4.75 - $56.05 $1.50 for trucking leaving $54.55.
Thurs. Mar. 10
Very nice in A.M. but clouded up about noon & rained some in P.M. Got colder
in the night again & froze hard. Mon helped Howard saw wood in P.M. Artie
McIntire was here a few minutes at noon.
Fri. Mar. 11
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Mon went to Fred W's. to saw early this
A.M. He got home about 3 P.M. Dean & I cut up & canned the last quarter
of beef today. Canned 17 qts. making 66 qts. of meat canned in all. Abbie Cassel
died this A.M. about 6:30 at the Decorah Hospital. Double pneumonia. Mrs. Wernett
was here just a minute in P.M. Harry Harveys got stuck, with their car, on the
hill just around the corner, east & Mon & Dean had to go with the team
about 5:30 & pull them out.
Sat. Mar. 12
Beautiful day. Regular spring day. We started to walk out to the pavement about
10:15 & had a ride with Arthur Smith from the corner by Chases up to the
pavement. Arthur met us there with the car. We took him back to Walt's
& then went to Canton to get a registered letter. We went on to Decorah.
Caught up with Marguerite Richardson by Prosper & she rode down with us.
Dean stopped at Mama's. Large crowd in Decorah. We had to go up to Houck's
office & sign a bunch of papers about buying the farm. Saw Ruth P. &
was with her awhile. Got a hair cut & went down & had Arthur Headington
test my eyes. We came back to B.O. & Arthur was there so he took us down
to the 4 corners & we walked home. Dean was home. We got home about 6. Dean
went over to Howard's in eve. Dave was here in A.M. Didn't freeze
much tonite.
Sun. Mar. 13
Nice bright, windy day, but the wind was cool. Mon went over to Marions awhile
in P.M. Richard B. was here a few minutes late in P.M. & Pearl was here

Mon. Mar. 14
Nice bright day, but the wind was cool. Fred W. came over here about 9 &
he & Mon & I walked over to Gilbert T's & Paul Reed met us
there with his car. He took us over to Walt's to get our car. I went in
to see Ruby a few minutes. When we got back to town Mon took me up home &
he & Fred went to Decorah. They picked up Dave & Lizzie at Aunt Lissa's.
Mon & Fred were pall bearers for Abbie Cassel. The services were at the
M.E. Church at B.O. at 2 P.M. Arthur, Philip, Vera & I sang "Rock
of Ages", "Come Unto Me" & "Going Down the Valley".
Dean drove the team & wagon to B.O. in P.M. so we all had a ride home. Got
home about 5. The roads sure have dried a lot. Leonard B. & Howard dragged
them in P.M. Chas. W. & Kate Leonhart got stuck down by the corner about
9 P.M. & Mon & Dean had to go down with the team & pull them out.
It froze some tonite. Jane Gilbertson was operated on this A.M. at the Lutheran
Hospital at La Crosse.
Tues. Mar. 15
Sprinkled off & on all A.M. & in P.M. it rained very hard & most
of the P.M. Quite a lot of thunder & lightning. Mon went up to Fritz's
in P.M. to saw wood but it rained so hard they couldn't saw.
Wed. Mar. 16
Another rainy, nasty, cold day. Didn't rain so hard but a mighty damp
day. Cleared off in eve & froze quite hard. Mon went over to Marion's
in A.M. Dean went over to Howard's in P.M.
Thurs. Mar. 17
Dandy nice warm day. Wind blew quite hard & it dried quite a bit. I washed
& ironed. Mon went to B.O. with Fritz in P.M. Dean went with Leonard late
in P.M. to fix ditches to run the water off the road between here & Fritz's
corner. It didn't freeze any tonite. Will Houck was buried at B.O. today.
Fri. Mar. 18
Dandy nice day, only cool. Mon, Dean & I went over & got Dave &
Lizzie about 10 A.M. & went to Bluffton with the team & wagon. I took
39 doz. eggs & Lizzie took 34 doz. We took our can of cream too. Jim hasn't
been here since Monday so we had plenty of cream. We got back home about 1:15
& Mon went up to Fritz too saw wood. He got home from there about 4.
Sat. Mar. 19
Not such a nice day. The sun shone a little but it was cloudy most of the day.
We walked down to the corner & rode to B.O. with Fritz. Arthur brought the
car over for us & Mon, Dean, Fritz, Marion, Bea & I went to Decorah.
Very large crowd in town. I got my glasses at Arthur Headington's. Won't
have to wear them only when I read & sew. Was up home a minute. We got home
some after 6. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Sun. Mar. 20
Beautiful day. Quite warm. The ground dried a lot. Uncle Marion came over about
10 & Arthur came about 11 & they spent the day with us. Arthur drove
the car over as far as Willard's & walked the rest of the way. Ida
Q. came with him & she went home & spent the day. We went over to Mike's
& spent the eve. Got home about 11.
Mon. Mar. 21
Regular summer day but pretty windy. Dried up a lot. We went up town with the
team & wagon. Went up home for dinner. Loyal was up there in P.M. also Harlan
a minute. They were on our road with the big maintainer this P.M. Had a hard
storm in the night. Lots of thunder, lightning, wind & rain & a little
hail.
Tues. Mar. 22
Rather cloudy day. Some cooler. Didn't do much of anything. Mon went over
to Marion's in A.M. but he wasn't home. Howard was here a minute
in A.M. Ben Bear of Decorah died this eve.
Wed. Mar. 23
Nice day. Rather windy. I washed. Mon went up to Gust's & got the
manure spreader in A.M. & he & Dean hauled manure in P.M. I went to
visit the school in P.M. with Pearl. They had their declamatory contest. Philip
S. & I were judges. Levern Quandahl won the dramatic & Vera Wernett
the humorous. Betty Palmer (D.) & Clyde Quandahl (H.) were the others. They
were all good. They went past with the maintainer again today.
Thurs. Mar. 24
Nice day but terribly windy. Looked rather rainy for awhile but didn't rain
until in the night. Had a shower & quite a bit of thunder & lightning.
Some hail too. Mon drove Dave's car to Decorah & Lizzie & I went along.
Left here about 10 A.M. Quite a few in town. We finished up the business, buying
the place. Borrowed $3000.00 from Will Baker. U.I.U money they have to lend.
Ben Bears funeral was this P.M. at 3:30 but we got out of Decorah before that
though. Quite a crowd in town when we left. Mon went over to Howard's awhile
late in P.M.
Fri. Mar. 25
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & some times quite hard.
Mon & Dean hauled manure in A.M. but didn't do much of any thing in
P.M. Cleared off in eve & got colder. Froze quite a little tonite.
Sat. Mar. 26
Dandy nice day, but the wind was real chilly. Mon went up & got Ruth &
Fritz about 9 A.M. & we all went to Bluffton (with the team & Fritz
buggy) & did our trading. Got back here about 12 & we all had lunch
here & then we took Fritz & Ruth home & we went on to B.O. The Joan
of Arc had a food sale at Fred Glise's store so I spent most of the P.M.
there. Quite a little food bro't in while I was there. Dean walked to
B.O. in A.M. & he rode home with us. Got home about 6. Dean got a hair cut
today.

Dandy nice day but quite windy. Arthur bro't mama & papa down &
spent the day here. Marion came just as we finished dinner. He & papa &
the boys went fishing in P.M. Mon took mama & I down to see Mary Leonhart
a few minutes in P.M. She is in pretty bad shape. She has gangrene in her leg.
Mon & I took the folks & Arthur home & then we brought the car home.
Maxine & Delorese were here a few minutes just after supper. Mrs. Will Hillerman
died today of heart trouble.

Dandy nice day but pretty windy. Clouded up late in P.M. & sprinkled awhile
& then it sure did rain. Most of the night I guess. Mon & Fritz had
to go to Decorah to serve on the jury. Marion came over here early in A.M. with
Jim. M. & went to Decorah with them. Mon drove. They left here about 8:30
& got home about 6. I washed & ironed & Dean did quite a few odd
jobs.
Tues. Mar. 29
Rained some early in A.M. but quit about 6:30. Cloudy most of A.M. but sun shone
most of P.M. Mon walked up to Fritz' about 8 A.M. & Fritz drove to
B.O. with the Ford. Mon drove papa's car to Decorah. They got home about
7 P.M. They finished up as jurors today. Didn't last long. Howard was
over a while in eve. Pretty windy day.
Wed. Mar. 30
Arthur's 21st Birthday. Not very nice day. Rained most of the day &
some times mighty hard. Quite a bit of thunder & lightning in P.M. About
8 P.M. the wind swung around into the north & it sure did blow & got
much colder. Froze quite a bit tonite. Didn't do much of anything. Walt,
Ruby, Ida & Arthur came down & spent the eve. They went home about 1.
Ray Hennings got mad last night & left Walt's too go back out West.

Mighty windy day & cold. Sun shone part of time. Dried the roads a lot.
Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. & got a jag of corn fodder.
Fri. Apr. 1
Cold day again. Sun shone part of the day. Mon & I went over to Marion's
about 10 A.M. Happy & Audry were there & we helped change the stoves
around. Took down Happy's stove & set up Marion's. We all went
on over to Lovlien's then & took Lovlien's range out & got
Audry's rug down & then set her stove up. We stayed there for dinner
& then Mon took me to Club at Fern's from there. Marion went to B.O.
with us. We got back home about 5. Big I.O.O.F. Dance in B.O. tonite but we
didn't go. Mon listened to the Louis-Thomas fight. Louis won in the 5th
round. Hi. Cummings died tonite.
Sat. Apr. 2
Nice bright day but cold. We went over after Marion about 10:30 & then on
over & got Arthur & picked papa up in B.O. & all went to Decorah.
Warren & Kay were in Decorah for a couple of days. Mon, the boys & I
went down to the Winneshiek to see them a few minutes after dinner. Charles
& Helen were there to for the P.M. Mon, Warren & Chas. were in Houck's
office all P.M. so we didn't get started for home until about 5. Took
papa Arthur & Marion home so it was 6 before we got home. Loyal came home
with us. Mon & the boys went up town in eve then. Janet Seviertsgaard was
killed down by the Giles corner tonite in an auto accident.

Nice most of the day but cold. Snowed pretty hard a few times during the day.
Mon went & got Arthur & Lester's & mama in A.M. Claude's
came up & papa came down about noon. Celebrated Arthur's & Leonard's
birthdays & Lester's 25th wedding anniversary. Had a good time. Arthur
took the car home with him so he took Lester's home.

Nice bright day but terribly windy & quite cold. Mon went over to Marion's
in A.M. & Dean went over in P.M. with the team & wagon & they brot
a jag of corn fodder home. Dean went over to Howards in eve. Arthur brought
the car home in eve & then Mon had to take him back to Walt's.
Tues. Apr. 5
Not such a bright day but the wind didn't blow so hard. Mon went about
8:30 A.M. to help Mr., Mrs. & Mabel Lovlien move to B.O. They moved in over
Charley Reed's shop. Happy & Audry are back together again & are
going to run the farm. Mon went on to Mabel late in P.M. & had some teeth
pulled so it was after 6 when he got home. He didn't feel very good either.
One of them was a bad one. I washed & ironed today. Snowed most of the night
I guess.

Regular blizzard most of the day. Snowed piled up pretty much in some places.
Didn't do much of anything. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Janet
S's. funeral was today. Froze hard tonite.

Nice bright day but the wind was cold. We went up town in A.M. Went up home
for dinner & spent the P.M. It thawed quite a little today. Melted quite
a lot of the snow. Froze hard tonite. Little daughter born to Fay & Genevieve
Harvey.

Bright day but cold & windy. Howard was over in A.M. awhile. We made ice
cream this A.M. Didn't do much of anything in P.M.

Nice day. Windy though & the wind was cool. Lots of the snow went today.
We went up home for dinner & then papa went to Decorah with us in P.M. Large
crowd in town. We got part of our bacon. Got home about 5. We went to Bluffton
in eve to do our trading & then Mon & Dean went to B.O.

Nice bright windy day. Dust blew a lot. Snow most all gone. Arthur came home
for dinner. Mon & I went to Decorah to the show in P.M. & we took him
to B.O. on our way. The show was sure fine. "Jane Withers in Checkers".
Stopped at Mrs. Millers on our way home but she wasn't home. Claude &
Bess Bronner & children were here & spent the eve.

Nice day. Mon went over to Marion's early in A.M. & then he &
Dean went over & got a jag of corn fodder after he got back. I washed &
ironed. Mon & I went up town a few minutes just after dinner. Went up to
Lovlien's a minute. The men hauled manure after we got home. Red &
Bea were down in eve. Red went over to Chase's & up to B.O. a little
while & Bea stayed here. They went home about 11.

Nice day. Quite windy in P.M. The men hauled manure. We went up home for dinner.
Ruth P. was there. Isa & the boys were there too. Loyals birthday. Richard
B. was here in A.M. awhile.
Wed. Apr. 13
Pretty warm day & pretty windy. Mighty dusty too. Wind in the south so we
got it all. Mon started in the field this A.M. Discing for oats.
Thurs. Apr. 14
Regular April shower day. Rained quite hard for a few minutes in A.M. but just
sprinkled off & on the rest of the day. Mon disced until about 10 &
then Dean did. He got good & wet in the shower so had to come to the house
& change his clothes. We went to the I.O.O.F. dance at the Hall in eve.
Quite a few out. Had a good time. Fritz & Ruth went with us. Got home about
2.
Fri. Apr. 15
"Good Friday". Sure not a very nice day. Started raining about 9:30
& kept up up the rest of the day & night, or almost all of the day.
Let up once in a while but only for a little while. Rained mighty hard at times.
Dean went out to disc in A.M., but came in about 10. I went over to Pearl's
a few minutes in A.M. Albert Van Vleit was here awhile in A.M. to insure the
building against wind. Club at Alice Seelye's this P.M. but too nasty.

Sat. Apr. 16
Rained almost all day. Brightened up a little while in P.M. & then we had
a hard shower with quite a lot of thunder & lightning & wind about 4:30.
Was nice in eve. Dean went with Leonard B. up to Floyds & spent the night.
Another accident on the pavement this P.M. A lady was killed down by Hammre's.
Tire blew out & the car tipped over & broke her neck. Sig Spreati died
suddenly tonite.
Sun. Apr. 17
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice warm day. Quite
windy. Clouded up in P.M. & looked pretty bad but we only got a little shower.
Looked bad again after supper but didn't rain any. Uncle Marion came over
in A.M. & was here for dinner. Bill & Hilda E. & their girls &
2 Gossman girls were here in P.M. Bill was fixing up the fire & lightning
insurance on the buildings. Walter W. was here a little while in eve.
Mon. Apr. 18
Dandy nice day. Marion came over about 8:30 & when we finished chores we
all went to Decorah. Quite a few in town this morning too. I got a hair cut.
We got home about 1. Had dinner & then Dean went out to disc. Mon, Marion
& I went to B.O. awhile. I went up home. Isa was there. Gavin Hjerleid was
there fixing our papers for the folks to get the old age pension. We took Marion
home & got home about 4. Gust R. came just after we got home. He has a new
car. 1931 Chev. Mon & I had a short ride with him. Mon, Dean & I went
to Bluffton in eve with the eggs & did our trading.
Tues. Apr. 19
Mama's 67th Birthday. Looked pretty rainy early in A.M. but cleared off
& was a nice day. Pretty windy & cool though. Mon went over to Marion's
& helped him build fence. They came over here for dinner. Dean disced in
A.M. & dragged in P.M. We went up home a little while in eve.
Wed. Apr. 20
Dandy nice day only the wind was cool. Dean finished dragging about 10 &
then Mon seeded until in P.M. Dean went out awhile & then Mon went out awhile
late in P.M. I helped clean grain off & on during the day.
Thurs. Apr. 21
Nice day but pretty cool. The men took turns seeding in A.M. & Dean seeded
in P.M. until he finished about 3 & then he started dragging. Ruth &
Francis came up awhile in P.M. Mon went out & dragged from 4 on until nite.
I was over to Pearl's a few minutes in A.M.
Fri. Apr. 22
Quite a nice day. Rather windy but quite warm after it got warmed up in A.M.
I washed & ironed. Mon finished dragging about 10:30 & then Dean went
out & started discing on the east piece. He disced the rest of the day.
Francis, Otto & Harriet came with Otto's truck in P.M. & got the
heifer ($45). Harriet was in & visited with me while they got the cattle
up from the field & got the heifer loaded. Mon & I went to Bluffton
in eve & then over to Claude Bronner's a minute.
Sat. Apr. 23
Cloudy & misty all A.M. & started in to rain about 3 P.M. & kept
it up the rest of the P.M. & a good share of the nite I guess. Archie Halverson
bro't the roofing for the hog house early in A.M. & Mon went over
& got Marion & papa came down & they put the new roof on. Got done
before it rained so hard. Dean disced until it rained. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. One sow had 11 little pigs tonite.
Sun. Apr. 24
Dean's 18th Birthday. Rainy in A.M. early but cleared off later in the
day & wasn't such a bad day. Dean walked up home & spent the day
& stayed up & went to Decorah to the Show in eve. Came home after the
show. Arthur drove the truck down & spent the day.
Mon. Apr. 25
Nice in A.M. Mon went over & got Marion early in A.M. & then we went
up & got papa & went to Decorah. Dean got a new sweater with some of
his birthday money. We got home about noon. Dean went out to disc but it was
too wet. He hauled manure then until 4 & it rained so hard he had to quit.
Sure did rain hard rained hard in the eve too. Mon went over to help Marion
in P.M. but he came home when it rained. Marion came home to dinner with us.
Dean went over to Howard's in eve. Arthur gave his sow to Dean as long as he
isn't going to be home & she had 8 little pigs this morning.
Tues. Apr. 26
Dandy nice warm day. Pretty windy in P.M. though. Mon went over to Marion's
& helped him fix fence all day. Dean fixed fence & put the calves in
a bigger lot this A.M. & he went down on Silver Creek with me in P.M. Quite
a lot of flowers blossomed. I washed & ironed. Red & Bea were here awhile
in eve. The roads dried up pretty good today.
Wed. Apr. 27
Nice in A.M. & windy but clouded up in P.M. Started to rain about 3 P.M.
& kept it up the rest of the P.M. Rained mighty hard at times too. Quite
a bit of thunder & lightning. Dean disced until it rained. Mon & I went
to Decorah in P.M. & came home in the rain & mud. Went to B.O. &
put the chains on. I got a new pair of slippers. Dean went over to Howards in
eve.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Sometimes quite hard. We went
up town awhile in P.M. I went up home. We went back to B.O. in eve to the I.O.O.F.
dance at the Hall. Ruth & Fritz went too. Had a good time. About 2 when
we got home. Nice & clear & cold when we came home. Had 6 more little
pigs this P.M. Dave came over in A.M. early & said his dog chased one of
our sows in a ditch & broke her leg so Mon & Dean took the team &
wagon & went after her but Leonard Blaess wanted her so they took her down
there.
Fri. Apr. 29
Quite a nice day, until late in P.M. it clouded up & sprinkled some &
then rained quite hard in eve. Fred Walter's came over about 9 A.M. &
Mon & him & I went up to Fritz & got him & Marion & then
men folks went to La Crosse & I stayed at B.O. I stayed up home for dinner.
Ad & Isadore were there in A.M. Went to Club at the M.E. basement. Picnic
lunch. Had a dandy lunch. The men didn't get back to B.O. until after
6 so it wasn't very early when we got home. Dean had all the chores done
but milking. 7 more little pigs today.
Sat. Apr. 30
Dandy nice day. We went up home early in A.M. & took papa to Decorah. Saw
Olive & the kids down there. Was with her awhile. Got back up home &
had dinner there & then Mon & Dean went down town & spent the P.M.
We got home about 4:30 & then Mon & I took the eggs to Bluffton &
did our trading. Went up town in eve. First dance at the Pavilion. Mon took
me up there about 10 & we came home about 1. Walt Wernett rode to B.O. with
us. He & Dean came home with Leonard B.
Sun. May 1
Dandy nice day. Mon & Dean went over after Arthur in A.M. The boys went
to Bluffton in P.M. We took Arthur back to Walt's about 4:30. Richard
B. & Dave were here in A.M. Had 2 more little pigs today.
Mon. May 2
Pretty warm day. Looked mighty rainy at times but didn't rain. Dean disced
all day. Mon went over to Marion's in A.M. He & I went to Calmar to
Harry Yager's funeral in P.M. Chas. & Helen were there also Uncle
Oliver & Aunt Ada. Uncle Chas. & Aunt Etta & some of the other relatives.
So many, many flowers. Large crowd out too. Services at the house & cemetry
only. Military funeral. Had lunch after the funeral. Got home a little after
5. I got a new hat in Decorah. Mon took the car up town in eve & left it
for Roy to look over. Happy brought him home, about 9. Had 10 more little pigs
tonite.
Tues. May 3
Nice in A.M. Pretty warm. Clouded up about noon & looked pretty rainy &
we had a little shower about 1. Looked rainy the rest of P.M. Looked pretty
bad about 6:30 & rained mighty hard. Pretty bad nite. Thunder & lightning
& rain most of the nite. Dean finished discing about 10:30 & then Mon
seeded until noon. Dean just got started in P.M. when it rained so he came to
the house. Mon went out about 4 & seeded until 5:30. Mon & I cleaned
grain in A.M. & Dean & I in P.M. Had 4 more little pigs.
Wed. May 4
Rained early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice until about 2 P.M. it started
to rain again & kept it up off & on all P.M. & eve. Mon & I
went to B.O. about 9:45 with Happy, Audry, Delores & Lizzie. We women folks
went to the Lutheran church to Neva Delay's wedding to John Raymond Lehaman.
Quite a few out to the church. I went up home after the service & stayed
for dinner. Went down to Lovlien's after dinner & waited until Harold's
were ready to come home. They bro't us home again. Harry Q. was here in
A.M. & he & Sonny were here in P.M.
Thurs. May 5
Quite a cold, windy rainy day. Not a bit nice. Didn't do much of anything.
Mon & Dean went up to Fritz in P.M. & they all went to B.O. Dean went
over to Howard's in eve.
Fri. May 6
Not such a bad day but pretty windy. I washed & ironed. Mon went over to
Mike's awhile in A.M. Dean hauled manure in P.M. Mon rode up town with
Leonard in P.M. & got our car. He & I went over to Marions late in P.M.
but he wasn't home. Went on over to Happy's but he wasn't
there either.
Sat. May 7
Pretty bad day. Rained almost all day & was pretty cold. Didn't do
much of anything. Dean went over to Dave's in eve.
Sun. May 8
Not very nice day. Cold & misty most of the day. Rained hard early in A.M.
& hailed quite a lot too only they were small hails so didn't do any
damage. We went up town about noon but didn't stay long. Went up home
but they were down to Aunt Lissa's. Reception for Neva & Raymond there
today. Would like to have gone but Mon wouldn't. Uncle Marion was over
in P.M. Dean went with Frank Gates in P.M. over to Wernetts.
Mon. May 9
Didn't look very nice early in A.M. but cleared of & was a nice day.
Mon & Dean went over to Marion's in A.M. & I went over to Pearl's
awhile. We went to B.O. in P.M. I went up home. Went to Breezy Hill in eve to
a shower for Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Manning. Not such a large crowd out but they
seemed to have a good time. Gossman's played. We got home about 1:30.
Lawrence Butler dropped dead today.
Tues. May 10
Pretty nice day. Much warmer. Dean seeded until about 5 P.M. Mon went out &
stayed until about 6. We let the little pigs out of the hog house this A.M.
They sure had a good time. Mon & I cleaned grain in A.M. I washed windows
in P.M. Went over to Dave's a few minutes in P.M. & got some green
onions. We were invited to another shower at Breezy Hill tonite but didn't
go. Howard McCabe & Charlotte O'Brien. They were married this morning.
Wed. May 11
Nice day but the wind was cool. Dean finished seeding about 9:30 & then
they hauled manure until about 11 & we went up to the school house then
to the last day of school picnic. Quite a crowd out & a dandy dinner. Dean
dragged in P.M. after we got home. Mon & I went over to Albert Van Vleit's
& got our insurance policy. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Thurs. May 12
Dandy nice day. Dean dragged until about 4:30. He finished then. I washed &
ironed. Mon was over to Howards in A.M. He has quite a cold & doesn't
feel very good.
Fri. May 13
Nice day but cool. Clouded up late in P.M. & started to rain in the nite
& rained most of the nite. Mon & Dean hauled manure. Mon took me to
Club at Dorothy Seelye's. Not so many out. The meeting was about half
over when he, Warren & Kay came after me. Warren's had come to our
house so they came after me. Came back home here a few minutes & then we
went & got Aunt Alice & went down to Florence's. Stayed there
for supper & then came back here. They didn't stay here very long.
Went on to Decorah. They were having one week of their vacation & were on
the last lap of it. Had to go home Sunday. They drove her mother's car.
Sat. May 14
Rained off & on all day. Sun shone very brightly at times. Mighty windy.
The roads dried up a lot. Mon & Fritz went to Bluffton about 11 & didn't
get back until about 2. Had trouble with the old Ford. We went to Decorah after
they got home. Didn't stay long. Saw Ruth. Went to B.O. in eve. We took
mama & papa up to the Pavilion. She is cook up there this year. I helped
her all eve & then we took them home & took Arthur back to Walt's.
Got home about 1:30. Mighty nice nite, but cold. Walt W. rode up town with us.

Sun. May 15
Very nice early in A.M. but clouded up about 10 & looked pretty stormy.
Rained quite hard & hailed quite hard too about 11. Had little showers off
& on then until in P.M. it cleared off & was nice the rest of the day.
We got up home just before the rain. Claudes, Lesters & Francis & Ruth
& Arthur were there & spent the day too. Celebrating birthdays. Had
a good dinner & a good visit. Arthur took the car in P.M. & went to
Decorah to the show. We took him home after he got back from there. We got home
about 6. Dean went with Arthur W. in eve.
Mon. May 16
Papa's 74th Birthday. Quite a nice day. Quite a little warmer. Dean started
discing for corn this A.M. Mon went over & got Marion in A.M. & they
did odd jobs in A.M. & in P.M. starting putting in a new fence on the south
side of the garden. Clem Brace ground feed here in P.M. Clouded up late in P.M.
& rained most of the nite I guess.
Tues. May 17
Rained all day & cool. Didn't do much of anything. Dean was over to

Not very nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was a nice day. Pretty warm.
Mon & Dean shelled seed corn in A.M. & Dean & I did in P.M. Got
it all done. Marion came over after dinner & he & Marion fixed fence
in P.M. We went up town in eve. I went up to Prust's to practice. Got
home a little after 11. Rained a good share of the night I guess.
Thurs. May 19
Rained most of the day again. We went up town in P.M. I went up home. Papa went
to Cedar Rapids today with a bunch from B.O. to an I.O.O.F. meeting.
Fri. May 20
Rained early in A.M. & the rest of the day was cloudy & cool. The men
worked at the fence some.
Sat. May 21
Dandy nice day. We went to Decorah about 11 A.M. & didn't get home
until about 4:30. Went to B.O. in eve. Maxine rode up with us. We took papa
& mama up to the Pavilion & then I went to practice at Prust's.
Mon took me up to the Pavilion after we finished our practice & I helped
mama. Quite a crowd up there. Kellys played. We took the folks & Arthur
home after the dance. We got 1 of our hams from the smoker today & then
hired a locker there & put the rest of the meat in that.
Sun. May 22
Dandy nice day. Mon & I went to B.O. a little after 12 & took Marion
along. The Joan of Arc entertained the Mothers & Fathers of the community
at the Hall in P.M. They had a short program in the lower hall at 2 P.M. &
then the lunch upstairs. Had a good program. Vera, Dorothy R., Florence &
I sang "Whispering Hope" & "Gold Mine In the Sky".
Quite a crowd out & the girls sure had it decorated nice. We served white
& dark cake, potato salad, sandwiches, pickles, coffee & ice cream.
We came home at 5. I bought a brick of ice cream & Marion came home with
us to help eat it. Mon took him home later.
Mon. May 23
Nice bright day but mighty windy & pretty cool. I washed & ironed. Dean
disced all day. Mon did a little of everything in A.M. Marion came over at noon
& they fixed fence in P.M. Leonard Blaess got here about 2:30 with the tractor
& started plowing about 3. Finished plowing this piece north of the house
about 12. Mike plowed while Leonard was eating supper. Grace was over here while
Mike was. Mon took Marion home after supper. Richard was here in eve. Mighty
cold nite. Very near if not a frost.
Tues. May 24
Pretty nice day. Dean dragged all day. Mon started planting about 10:30. He
broke the rope on the planter & we went up town at noon & got a new
one. Marion came over after dinner & fixed fence in P.M. Had quite a storm
in the nite. Rained pretty hard.
Wed. May 25
Quite a nice day. Mon & Dean did odd jobs in A.M. & Dean disced in P.M.
Marion came over before dinner & he & Mon did some work in P.M. Mon
took him home about 4 P.M. Arthur Smith was here awhile in eve.
Thurs. May 26
Nice warm day. Mon & Dean plowed & dragged the garden in A.M. &
then Mon planted corn & Dean dragged until noon. Loyal came down early in
A.M. Mon, Loyal & I went to Bluffton after dinner. Dean disced. We made
garden after we got home from Bluffton. Mon & Dean took turns discing in
P.M. & helping me with the garden. Mon, Loyal & I went up after the
mail about 5 & Marion was just walking to town so we took him up there.
Went on up home & got some onion sets Aunt Till left there for us. Dean
went with Art. W. in eve. Rained in the nite.
Fri. May 27
Nice part of the day & pretty rainy looking part of the day. Didn't
rain though. Pretty warm for a while in the A.M. Got much cooler later in P.M.
& in eve. Dean disced in A.M. & dragged in P.M. Mon was over to Howard's
in A.M. & Red was here quite a while after he got home from there. They
took me up to Elsie's to Club at noon & Loyal went home. Mon planted
in P.M. Quite a few out to Club. Had a swell lunch. Mon came after me about
6. Mon & I went up town a little while in eve. Dean went with Walt W.
Sat. May 28
Quite a nice warm day. Dean dragged in A.M. & Mon planted corn. They took
turns discing in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. I went up to the Pavilion &
helped mama. We took the folks home after the dance. Ole A. rode home with us.
Arthur came home too. Got home about 1:30. Arthur is through at Walt's.
Seems mighty good to have him home.
Sun. May 29
Dandy nice warm day. Arthur went over to Walt's awhile early in A.M. Got
his clothes & helped Ronald Webb get started. He got home about 10:30. We
went down to the creek by Wernett's & washed the car. Got home &
had dinner & then went for a ride. Went east of the four corners to Locust
& then Highlandville & Quandahl & then to Decorah to Dunning's
Springs & past the ice cave & on down to the Dam then back to Decorah
& home. Got home about 5:30.
Mon. May 30
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Dean & Arthur took turns discing today. Mon,
Dean & I planted some potatoes this A.M. & some garden. Mon, Arthur
& I went down to Claude's after dinner & got some asparagus &
then up to B.O. Went up home a minute. Philo Dunton was there. Isa & the
boys too. Came home & planted some sweet corn cukes & melons. They finished
discing & started dragging & planting late in P.M. The boys went to
Bluffton in eve.
Tues. May 31
Pretty warm day but quite a nice breeze. I washed & ironed. Dean dragged
& Mon planted corn. They finished this north piece about 3 P.M. Arthur did
odd jobs all day until about 4 P.M. he went down to Mike's & dragged
until 6. Leonard started to plow here about 2 P.M. Mon went up to Richard's
to plant about 4. It started to rain about 8 & it sure did pour down. Rained
most of the nite I guess.
Wed. June 1
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a beautiful day. Mighty
muddy in A.M. but dried up a lot. Mon & Dean went to B.O. with Leonard B.
early in A.M. The boys went hunting in P.M. & Mon & I went down in Uncle
Marion's woods & over next to Harry's looking for "lady
slippers". Found quite a few. We went up town about 4. I went up home.
Benefit dance for Walt R. at the pavilion tonite but we didn't go.
Thurs. June 2
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Quite a wind. We went to Decorah about 9 A.M. &
got home about 1. Got a corn sheller down there. Got home & had dinner &
Mon & I went up to Richards too see about planting & it was all right
so we came home & he took the team back & planted the rest of the P.M.
Dean went hunting in P.M. Leonard started plowing here after dinner. Arthur
was out with him most of the P.M. Dean went out with him after they got the
chores done. He finished plowing about 6:30 & then disced it. They got thro'
about 10:30 P.M. Mon, Arthur & I took Richard & Doris over to Joe Albertson's
in eve, but we never got there. Got stuck going thro' their swampy roads.
Sure had a terrible time trying to get to their place. Ended up in Spillville
& then came home. Got home about 1. Had quite a ride.
Fri. June 3
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up about noon & just after dinner it started
to rain & rained hard most of the P.M. & eve. Mon went to Richard's
in A.M. to plant corn. It rained so he couldn't finish & didn't
get home until about 5. Dean dragged in A.M. Arthur & I set out cabbage
& tomato plants & did other jobs.
Sat. June 4
Dandy nice day. Mon walked over to Marions awhile in A.M. The boys did a little
of everything. Mon & I went to Bluffton in P.M. to do the trading. The boys
took the fence away from around the old garden. Mon went up to Richards after
we got home from Bluffton. We took up a bunch of strawberry plants after he
got home. Went to B.O. in eve. I went up to the Pavilion. Kelly's played.
Big crowd. Arthur & Dean went to Decorah. We got home about 1.
Sun. June 5
Dandy nice day. Quite windy though. The boys went hunting & fishing all
day. Mon & I went over to Merle & Elsie's for dinner. They celebrated
their 25th Wedding anniversary & there was sure a crowd there. Had a swell
dinner. Uncle Marion rode over & back with us. We got home about 4.
Mon. June 6
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & rained off & on. Dean dragged.
Arthur planted corn. Finished this P.M. Mon & I planted more garden in A.M.
We went up to Primary Election right after dinner. Mr. & Mrs. Ludwig Q.
& Richard went along too. Rained quite hard just after we got home &
the boys had to come in from the field for awhile. We went up to Red's
a little while in eve. Hazel Donald & Roy Harvey were married today.
Tues. June 7
Dandy nice day but cool. Mon went up & got the folks early in A.M. &
they came down & planted potatoes. Mon & Arthur broke up a piece of
ground, up in the pasture, to plant a truck garden. Mon & I took the folks
home about 4:30. Dean plowed corn all day. The boys & I went to Decorah
to the show in eve. Dr. Rhythm "Bing Crosby & Andy Divine".
It was good. Got home about 11:30.
Wed. June 8
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur worked at the truck
patch. Dean plowed corn.
Thurs. June 9
Nice but mighty windy. Dust blew pretty bad. Dean plowed corn. Mon & Arthur
fixed fence most of the day. Mon went over to Marion's just after dinner.
I went to Red's. We stopped at Richard's a minute on our way home.
Mon, Arthur & Fritz went to Lodge in eve.
Fri. June 10
Rather cloudy all day. Sun shone a little off & on. Started to rain about
5 & it sure did rain hard for awhile. Rained until between 6 & 9 &
then cleared off. Dean plowed corn. Mon & Arthur finished fixing fence around
the truck patch & then planted popcorn in P.M. Mon took me up to Richards
& met Ole's & then I went to Club with Gladys & Alice at Muriel
T's. Dorothy & Alice & Inez went along too. Got back to B.O. just
as Maxine & Dave were leaving for home so I came home with them. Just got
home when it started to rain so hard.
Sat. June 11
Dandy nice day. Mon went over to Howard's awhile in A.M. We went out to
set out the strawberry plants but it was too wet. Mon, Dean & I went to
B.O. about 2 & then Mon & I went on to Decorah. Very large crowd in
town. Stopped at B.O. on our way home for Dean. We went to Bluffton in eve to
do our trading & then went to B.O. Dan Matthews & Maxine went to B.O.
with us. Arthur took Maxine & I up to the Pavilion. I went in to the dance
awhile. Went & helped mama from eleven on with the supper. Jack Joker &
His Ace's played. Maxine came home with us. We got home a little after
1.
Sun. June 12
Beautiful day. Dean went over to Blaess's early in A.M. & went with
Leonard over to Tommie McCabe's & around. Mon, Arthur & I went
up to Fritz, Ludwigs & Red's a few minutes in A.M. Came home &
cleaned up the car & had dinner, then Arthur & I took Mon & Ludwig
over to Marion's to spend the P.M. (They had a keg of beer.) We went up
& got papa & mama & took them to the show at Decorah. "Adventures
of Tom Sawyer." It sure was good. Took a ride up around by the City Park
on our way home. Stopped at Uncle Geo's on our way home. He had been at
Iowa City doctoring & just got home yesterday. We got home about 5 &
Dean came shortly after. Mon came about 6. Howard was here awhile in eve.
Mon. June 13
Nice day. Dean plowed corn. Mon, Arthur & I worked in the truck patch in
A.M. Set out strawberry plants & planted potatoes. Mon & Arthur finished
up after dinner & then Arthur & I worked in the garden. He plowed &
I hoed. Mon put out gopher poison.
Tues. June 14
Looked rainy in A.M. early but cleared up later & was real nice until in
P.M. it clouded up & rained off & on. Rained mighty hard from 4:30 until
about 6 & then rained off & on in eve & night. Looked different
times as if we were going to have a bad storm. Dean plowed corn until it rained
so hard. Arthur fixed fence early in A.M. to keep the calves in. Mon went up
town about 9:30. Marion came home with him & they worked at the lane fence.
Mon took Marion home just before it rained so hard. Raymond Young brou't
us 100 lbs. of Moor Man's this A.M.
Wed. June 15
Nice for awhile in A.M. but clouded up had we had quite a shower. Cloudy most
of P.M. Sun shone a little. I washed & ironed. The boys cut thistle's
in P.M. Arthur Smith was here in P.M. Mon walked over to Marion's late
in P.M. Dean went over to Howard's & Dave's in eve.
Thurs. June 16
Mostly cloudy day & cool. The boys fixed fence all day. Mon & I went
to B.O. a few min's. in A.M. Went up home just a minute. Mon took Harold,
Audry & Delores to B.O. in P.M. & then they took the car & went
on to Mabel too see the Dr. about Delores. (Their car is in the garage). We
went to B.O. in eve. Fritz & Marion rode along. I went up to mama's
the men went to Lodge. Dean got a hair cut. Olive & the little boys were
at mama's too. Marie is at Ames to their 4.H. doings. They shut up the
little pigs this A.M. Starting to wean them.
Fri. June 17
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Dean plowed corn all day. Mon & Arthur fixed
fence until 4 P.M. & then went to Decorah. Arthur got new shoes & rubbers
& he also got a hair cut. They got home about 6. I worked in the garden
all P.M.
Sat. June 18
Nice warm day. Dean & Arthur plowed corn all day. Mon cut canada thistles
& did other things. We went to Bluffton about 3 P.M. to do some trading.
Went to B.O. in eve. Arthur went to Decorah. I rode up to the Pavilion with
Leonard B. & Dean. I helped mama again. Quite a crowd. Cowboy Orchestra
from Chicago. Dean rode home with Leonard B. Walt W. rode home with us. Got
home about 1:20.
Sun. June 19
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Arthur W. & Walt W. were here awhile in A.M.
We went up home & spent the day. Claude's & Lester's were
there too.
Mon. June 20
Dandy day. Mighty warm. The boys plowed corn. Mon & I went up town a few
min's. in P.M. I got a straw hat. Albert, Florence, Shirley, Norris &
Otto E. were here & spent the eve. Arthur & Dean went swimming in eve.
Tues. June 21
Nice hot day again. The boys plowed corn. Mon & I worked in the garden a
good share of the day. I was over to Pearl's a few minutes early in A.M.
Had a shower in the nite.
Wed. June 22
Pretty hot day again. The boys plowed corn. I washed & ironed. Mon took
papa & mama to Decorah right after dinner. They got back here about 2:30
& then Mon & I took them home about 5. Papa went down to see the Dr.
We listened to the Louis-Schmeling fight in eve. Didn't last long. Louis
knocked S. out in the first round. Walt W. was over in eve.
Thurs. June 23
Pretty hot day again. Mon & Dean went over to Marion's right after
breakfast & helped him awhile & then he came over & helped them.
Arthur hoed thistle's. We had dinner a little early & took Marion
home & then took Arthur over to Bill Jacobson's to hay. Went back
to B.O. too get Lester & Isa to go to his mother's funeral but they
wouldn't go so we went up & got mama. The funeral was at the Boem
Funeral Home. Not many out. Mon was a pall bearer. The burial was at B.O. Dave
& Lizzie rode home from B.O. with us. Had a hard rain about 5 P.M. on until
after 6. Quite a severe electrical storm too. Papa went down & got Arthur
so he stayed with them all nite.
Fri. June 24
Nice day. Pretty hot. Cloudy at times but the sun shone most of the day. We
cleaned the brooder house in A.M. Went to B.O. at noon. Florence E. drove our
car from B.O. to Club at Violet's. Shirley & Norris went too. Quite
a crowd out. Had initiation. Lucile Olson & Irene Harland joined. Had a
swell lunch. Arthur came home with us. Dorothea Reid rode down to her folks
with us. Had another bad storm in the nite. Regular cloud burst. Plenty of wind,
lightning & thunder & some hail. Didn't get much sleep. We went
over to Marion's a minute in eve. We got our Soil Conservation check today.
Sat. June 25
Cloudy cool day. Didn't do much of anything. Went to Decorah about 3 P.M.
Got home about 5:30. Very large crowd in town. Saw Ruth P.
Sun. June 26
Dandy nice day, a little cool. Mon, Arthur & I went up & got the folks
about 9:30 A.M. & we went to Ruth's & Francis'. Had a good
time & lot of strawberries to eat. Uncle Dan Ferris is living with them
now. We got home about 6:30.
Mon. June 27
Dandy nice day. Quite a cool breeze. I washed & ironed. Arthur mowed weeds
in A.M. & helped Bill Jacobson hay in P.M. Mon & Dean took papa to Decorah
in A.M. They plowed corn in P.M. Mon broke the two row about 4 P.M. so he couldn't
plow any more. He went over to Marions awhile in eve. Dean went visiting too.
Dr. Kochendorfer was here early this A.M. & tested our cattle for T.B.
Tues. June 28
Dandy nice day. Mon & I went to Decorah early in A.M. too get the repairs
for the corn plow. Came home the river road. They were starting to tear out
the old bridge across Pine Creek & they didn't care about letting
us across. No temporary bridge they say. We got home about 10 & Arthur plowed
until noon. Dean plowed corn all day. Mon plowed in P.M. & Arthur helped
Bill J. The boys went to B.O. in eve. Dance at the Pavilion. "Country
Store Night". Quite a lot of prizes given away.
Wed. June 29
Quite a nice day but cloudy part of the time. The boys plowed corn. Mon &
I went to Bluffton in P.M. Had to go way around by Dawleys.
Thurs. June 30
Started raining about 5 & it sure did rain terribly hard part of the time.
The men went after the cattle & all got wet so they all had to change their
clothes. It rained most of the A.M. & was rainy looking most of the P.M.
The sun did shine a little a couple of times. Pretty warm. Dr. K. was here this
A.M. to read the cattle but we had no reactions. Dean went over to Howards in
A.M. We went to B.O. about 1. Florence & I entertained the M.E.L.A.S. at
the church parlors in P.M. Not so many out but still a good crowd too. Had a
good lunch. Didn't get home for chores until after 7.
Fri. July 1
Cloudy most of the A.M. The sun shone in P.M. Pretty warm. We went to Decorah
about 12. Quite a crowd in town. We got 305 little leghorn chicks. Got home
with them about 3 & then went up to B.O. a little while. Went up home a
minute. Walt W. was here awhile in eve. He got a car today & came over to
show it & give the boys a ride. Had a blow out just as he got back here.
Ed Wicks was buried at B.O. this P.M. Had a hard rain again in the nite. Plenty
of thunder & lightning too.
Sat. July 2
Sun shone most of the day. Pretty warm. Mon & Arthur went over to Marions
with the team & wagon in A.M. Went to plow some ground for him. Dean &
I spent most of the day running & looking after the chickens.
Sun. July 3
Misty & damp most of the A.M. but cleared off about noon & was very
nice the rest of the day. Claude's came over about 11 & we had a picnic
dinner & then Olive, Marie & I picked gooseberries in P.M. The boys
all went to the creek. Mon & Claude visited & walked around thro'
the fields.
Mon. July 4
Very nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & looked like a mighty bad
storm but it just rained hard here. I washed & ironed. The boys plowed corn
in P.M. & Mon plowed in the garden. Dean went with Leonard B. in eve. We
planned on going out this eve but it wasn't very nice.
Tues. July 5
Dandy nice day. The boys & I went up & got mama & papa about 9:30
& went to Decorah. Mama bought me a dress. We got back home here a little
after 12. Lloyd K. came down about 1:30 to look at the sows & then Mon rode
over to Marion's with him. Had another rain in the nite.
Wed. July 6
Nice in A.M. early but clouded up & we had a hard rain in A.M. Looked pretty
stormy all of P.M. too. Had quite a shower here in P.M. too. We sold 7 sows,
the stag & a last years shoat & Glen Rollins hauled them this A.M. Mon
& Dean went. Marion & Fritz sold hogs too & they all went in the
same load. Mon & Dean got home a little after noon & then Mon &
I went to Decorah. Saw Ruth. Sat in the car & visited with her awhile. I
went up to Mabel's Beauty Salon & got a permanent. Started at 4 &
got down about 6:40.

again. Mon took papa to Decorah this A.M. He got home at noon. The boys plowed
corn until it rained & they sure got soaked. Lester's & mama came
down in A.M. to clean out the potatoes. They finished about 3. Mon took me to
Club at Miriams in P.M. Quite a few out. Had a nice lunch. Rode back to B.O.
with Florence. The boys went visiting a little while in eve. Mon went over to
Marions a little while in eve.
Sat. July 9
Quite a nice day. Clouded up in eve & we had a hard storm about 11. Rained
hard & the wind blew hard. Quite a lot of thunder & lightning. Rained
the most of the time from then on during the nite I guess. The boys plowed corn
in P.M. Mon & I went to Bluffton in P.M. too do some trading. We went to
B.O. in eve. I went up to the Pavilion & helped mama. We came home about
1 in the rain & mud. Didn't have any trouble coming home without chains
though.
Sun. July 10
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon went up to Red's in A.M. & helped
him. He had a "Bee" putting a roof on the old granary, so Mon was
there all day. We went up after him about 6. Dean went with Arthur W. in A.M.
& was gone all day. Arthur went to B.O. in A.M. & got back about 1 &
then he & I went to Decorah to the show. I went to the Grand "Gold
Diggers of Paris" & he went to the Lyric. Mon, Arthur & I went
over to the Plymouth Church in eve to their Annual blow out. Quite a few there.
Got home about 11:30. Little daughter born to Dorothy & Clarence Nauman.
Mon. July 11
Dandy day. Pretty warm. I washed & ironed. Dean plowed corn in A.M. &
Arthur mowed hay. They both plowed corn in P.M. Mon, Arthur & I went up
town a few minutes in eve.
Tues. July 12
Nice day. Pretty hot. The boys plowed corn until about 10 & then Dean went
to Howard's to help him hay & Mon & Arthur went out & got
a load of hay before dinner. We got in 3 more loads in P.M. I led "Jack"
on the hay rope. I picked berries between loads in P.M.
Wed. July 13
Nice & warm day until about noon it clouded up & looked mighty bad.
We only got a sprinkle though. They got hail at Canton. It cooled off quite
a little after the sprinkle. Arthur & Dean plowed corn in A.M. & then
Dean went to Howards in P.M. & Mon & Arthur plowed corn in P.M. Dean
went visiting in eve.
Thurs. July 14
Dandy nice day. Much cooler. Mon plowed corn until about 9:30 & then Dean
plowed the potatoes & then plowed corn. Arthur mowed until about 9:30 &
then he plowed corn until noon. Dean & I worked in the garden until Mon
came & then he worked in the garden. We put up hay in P.M. & I picked
berries between loads. We went up town in eve. Fritz & Ruth went along.
There was a show in town & most of the folks went to that. Olive & I
went up to mama's.
Fri. July 15
Nice day. Not too warm. Dean plowed corn in A.M. & Arthur mowed hay. They
got in 1 load of hay before dinner & then put in hay in P.M. I went over
to Pearls a little while in A.M.
Sat. July 16
Nice day again. The boys plowed corn & got in 1 load of hay in A.M. &
then 2 more in A.M. They did up the chores early & we went to Decorah. The
boys & I went to the Show at the Grand "Robin Hood". It was
good. "Home Coming" at Decorah today & tomorrow & there
was sure a crowd on the streets. We got back to B.O. about 10 & I went up
to the Pavilion & helped mama. Got home about 12:30. Looked quite stormy
for a while in eve but it passed us by.
Sun. July 17
Dandy nice day. Quite a nice cool breeze. Mon & I were home all day. Dean
went to Decorah in A.M. with Arthur W. & Arthur went down too see the new
bridge. He went to B.O. in P.M.
Mon. July 18
Pretty warm day. Papa & mama came down a little after 5 to hoe the potatoes.
They got thro' about 2 P.M. Mon & Arthur worked at the binder in A.M.
Mon went to B.O. & Mabel too get repairs about 11. He got back about 12:30
& then they finished getting the binder around ready to start cutting grain
& Dave came & he was having trouble with his binder & Mon went &
helped him awhile. They got started for the field about 4 & tore the canvas
so Arthur went to B.O. & got that fixed & then Mon cut until after 6.
Went to Bluffton in eve. Richard & Doris went along.
Tues. July 19
Pretty warm day. Mon cut oats & the boys shocked. Windy & dusty.
Wed. July 20
Warm dusty day again. Mon cut grain. The boys started tearing up the fence along
the road, getting ready for the grading of the road. They shocked some. Lizzie
came over in P.M. & we went up & picked some gooseberries for her. The
road grading crew moved in this P.M. & started work about 4 P.M. getting
our road graded ready for gravel. They started down on the north hill. Mon,
Arthur & I went up town awhile in eve. Quite a few in town.
Thurs. July 21
Had a shower early in A.M. & then quite a storm in P.M. Rained hard &
the wind blew hard for a little while. Some hail. Pretty big ones. Mon &
the boys were tearing out fence in A.M. & then the boys fixed fence in P.M.
& Mon cut grain until it rained. Mon was out in the rain & hail &
he sure got soaked. The men on the road worked all the time. Mon & the boys
went down & watched them after the rain. Harlan was here awhile in P.M.
I washed & ironed some. Howard & Walt W. were here awhile in eve. Queen
had a little colt this A.M.
Fri. July 22
Nice in A.M. Mon & the boys worked at the fences. Mon & Arthur went
out to cut grain & shock after dinner but another rain came up & they
didn't stay out long. Rained off & on all P.M. I finished ironing
in A.M. Mon & I went down where they were working the road in eve. Harry,
Vera & the kids came along while we were there & we stayed there awhile
visiting. Mon & the boys were down where they were working in P.M.
Sat. July 23
Nice day. The men worked in the grain field. We went to B.O. in eve. The Club
had an Ice Cream Social on the M.E. lawn for the benefit of the cemetry &
I went up there & helped until about 10. Went up to the Pavilion & helped
mama there. Got home about 1.
Sun. July 24
Nice day but looked quite rainy at times. Only sprinkled a little about 5 P.M.
Dean went away in A.M. early & didn't get home until in P.M. Arthur
went down to the creek in A.M. & washed the car. "Red" was here
awhile in A.M. Mon, Arthur & I went up home about 12. Had dinner there.
Papa isn't a bit well. We spent the P.M. there. Got home about 5. It looked
mighty rainy in eve, but didn't rain any. We were invited over to Mary
& Edward Nelson's to a picnic today but Mon & the boys didn't
care about going so we didn't go.
Mon. July 25
Dandy nice day. Not so hot. Arthur took papa & mama to Mabel in A.M. to
see Dr. Nass. He got home about 11:30. Mon finished cutting grain today. He
worked until about 7 P.M. to do it though. Dean shocked all day & Arthur
did in P.M. Marion was here for dinner.
Tues. July 26
Not very nice day. Started to rain about 10 A.M. & kept it up off &
on all day. Not hard but just a misty rain. The boys finished shocking about
9. Loyal drove the pony down this A.M. & spent the day. The road men worked
until it rained. Arthur went to Decorah in eve. Dean went visiting.
Wed. July 27
Dandy nice day. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah in A.M. rather late. I got
my hair washed & a reset. We got home about 3. Worked around here awhile
& then Mon & I went to B.O. about 4. Went up home a little while. Papa
is better today. We went down to Harry Harveys from there to see about threshing.
Stopped at "Happy's" a minute on our way home. The men worked
up in the grove today, cutting thro' there & filling in, in front
of the house. Sure makes a difference in the looks of the place. Pearl &
the girls & I were out looking the road over in eve. We got a crate of apricots
in Decorah today.
Thurs. July 28
Nice day. I washed & did part of the ironing. The men plowed potatoes &
did a little of everything. We went to B.O. to the Pavilion in eve to a shower
for Mr. & Mrs. Norman Eddy. Quite a crowd out. Had a good time. They got
lots of nice presents. Roy Halverson's played. We got home about 1. Loyal
went home tonite. Mon won a case of beer on his dance ticket tonite.
Fri. July 29
Nice day. Quite warm. It looked mighty stormy in P.M. & eve but it didn't
rain. Sprinkled some in the nite. I ironed & canned apricots in A.M. Didn't
do much in P.M. Mon & the boys were out on the road watching them work most
of the A.M. Mon took Blaess's over to Jon's in P.M. too look at
a separator. Marion was here for dinner.
Sat. July 30
Not very nice day. Sprinkled off & on most of the day. Looked like a mighty
bad storm about 6:30 but it didn't rain then. Had a hard rain about 9:30
though. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. about 10 A.M. Harry Q. had a flat tire
over by Willard's bridge & we took him to B.O. too get tire patches
& then took him back to his car again, then Mon & I took papa &
mama to Mabel. Dean stayed at B.O. until we got back. We got home about 1. Dean
went to B.O. in eve with Leonard B.
Sun. July 31
Nice day. Dean was gone most of the day. Arthur went down to the creek in P.M.
Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah in eve to the last show. Went to the Grand
to "White Banners". It was good. Very large crowd in town.
Mon. Aug. 1
Dandy day. Pretty warm. I washed. Arthur mowed hay in A.M. Mon & I went
to Bluffton right after dinner. Marion went along too. Had to wait for Jim to
get back from Decorah with bread & butter for Marion, so it was about 3:30
when we got home. The boys had a load of hay loaded so Mon took it up to the
folks & the boys & I went up with the car. Papa is feeling some better.
Tues. Aug. 2
Pretty hot day again. The men put up a jag of hay in the barn this A.M. I ironed.
Marion came over for dinner & then we went to Decorah in P.M. We went up
town in eve. I went up home a little while.
Wed. Aug. 3
Pretty hot day. Did a little of everything. They mowed the front yard this A.M.
& did other jobs. Dean went over to Howard's & Dave's in
eve.
Thurs. Aug. 4
Pretty hot day again. The men started putting in the fence around the field
across the road. Mon & I went to B.O. a minute after dinner. Stopped at
Quandahl's & got some apples on our way home. We went to B.O. in eve.
Olive & the little boys & I went up home awhile. We got home about 11:30.
Fri. Aug. 5
Very hard rain early in A.M. while the folks were milking. Rained so hard &
so long. The storm looked terrible too. Cleared off later in A.M. & was
nice the rest of the day. Sun shone most of the day & the wind blew so it
dried up a lot. The men fixed fence in P.M.
Sat. Aug. 6
Pretty hot day. Arthur took papa & mama to Mabel this A.M. The men worked
at the fence all day. Howard was here a couple of times. He got a grain separator
from Decorah in P.M. The folks went & watched them bring it home from the
corner & then unload it. We went up town awhile in eve. Got home about 10.
It looked pretty rainy. Stormed in the nite. Bad thunder & lightning.
Sun. Aug. 7
Nice day but quite warm. Mon & the boys were over to Howard's in A.M.
& the boys went back again after dinner. Mon & I went up to the truck
garden & then out to the oat field & then we went over to Howard's
awhile too. They were trying out the new separator. Arthur went up town about
5 & got the paper & some ice cream. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah
about 8. Stopped at the swimming pool & watched awhile & then went on
into town to the show. "Tropic Holiday" "Bob Burns & Martha
Raye". It sure was good. Got home about 12. Dean went somewhere in eve.
Mon. Aug. 8
Had a terribly hard rain early in A.M. Bad lightning & thunder & some
hail. Cleared off in P.M. & was very nice. Fritz was here awhile in A.M.
The men went down to watch them work on the road in P.M.
Tues. Aug. 9
Nice day but pretty hot. I washed & ironed. Mon & Dean threshed at Howards
& Mike's. I went over to Pearl's a few minutes after dinner.
Loyal rode the pony down this A.M. He went home about 5. He & Arthur went
& watched them thresh awhile in P.M. We went up town a little while in eve.
Pretty warm nite.
Wed. Aug. 10
Pretty warm early in A.M. but cooled off & was very nice & cool. The
men were all over to Fred's threshing. I did a little of everything.
Thurs. Aug. 11
Dandy nice cool day. The men were all over to Fred's until after 4. Arthur
came home then & the machine moved to Charley's. We went up after
the mail after they finished chores & then we went on to B.O. We went up
home a little while. Pretty cool tonite. You could see your breath.
Fri. Aug. 12
Dandy day. Rather warm at times. Mon & Dean threshed at Charley's
until about 4 P.M. Dean broke the wagon & Mon had to go to Decorah &
get a new bolster. They finished Dave's threshing after 4 but it was about
dark when Dean got home. Arthur did odd jobs getting things around ready to
thresh. He took some oats to Mabel in P.M. & had them ground & took
papa & mama to the Dr. I worked all day getting ready for threshers. We
went to Bluffton in eve. Richard & Grace were over early in A.M. & shelled
some corn.
Sat. Aug. 13
Nice day. Not so hot in P.M. but it got mighty warm in P.M. Quite windy. We
threshed today. Got thro about 3 P.M. & then they finished out Harry. It
was about 8 when Mon got home & Dean got home a little before. We had 528
bu. of oats but not very good ones. Lizzie & Dave's helped me. Arthur
took Doris & Dickie & Marion home about 4. We went up town in eve. I
went up to the Pavilion & helped mama. Got home about 1.
Sun. Aug. 14
Quite a warm day. Mighty windy. Dust blew terribly bad. Dean went over to Mikes
early in A.M. & Earl Richard's cut his hair. Arthur went for a ride
with Ray Mc. Arthur W. was here awhile in A.M. We went over to Howards about
noon. Had a picnic. Mikes, Richards, Floyds were there too. Had a dandy dinner
& supper. Celebrating Verna's & Darlenes birthdays. The men went
to B.O. in P.M. & got some beer. It looked like we were going to get a bad
storm but it wasn't so bad. Wind blew hard for a little while & rained
some, but not so long.
Mon. Aug. 15
Damp cloudy muggy day. Didn't do so very much of anything. Howard was
over in eve awhile.
Tues. Aug. 16
Started raining early in A.M. & kept it up until about 3 P.M. Rained mighty
hard most of the A.M. Didn't get the cows very early too do the milking.
Quite nice in P.M. late & in eve. Dean rode to B.O. in P.M. with Walt W.
& walked back. He got back when the folks were milking.
Wed. Aug. 17
Dandy nice day. I washed in A.M. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah in P.M.
I got my hair fixed. Spent most of the P.M. there. Got home about 6:30. Howard
was here in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 18
Dandy nice day. Quite warm in P.M. The men went up to Fritz & helped turn
out shocks in A.M. Clem Brace was here & ground feed in A.M. I ironed in
A.M. We all went up to Fritz in P.M. too thresh. They got thro' about
5:30.
Fri. Aug. 19
Pretty warm day & terribly windy. The boys threshed at Ludwig's. Arthur
went for Dave. Mon & I went up home about 10:30. Stopped at Ludwig's
a few minutes on our way up there. Had dinner up home. Came home about 2. Stopped
at Ludwigs on our way home. Mon did up the chores early thinking the boys would
be home & Fritz's & we could go to the Fair, but they didn't
come. We went up to Ludwigs about 7:15 & they were still threshing, so it
was after 8 before the boys got home. Too late to go to the Fair. Looked pretty
rainy but didn't rain any.
Sat. Aug. 20
Rather cloudy day. Looked pretty rainy at times. Sprinkled off & on during
A.M. Cleared up in eve & was a fine nite but pretty cool. The boys threshed
at Richard's in A.M. Mon was up there awhile. They threshed at Red's
in P.M. I went up there & Mon went to B.O. They got thro' there about
4 & we came home then & the boys took their baths & did up the chores
early. We went up & got Fritz & Ruth about 6:30 & went to the Fair
at Decorah. Very large crowd there. The free acts were fine. Got home about
2. Stopped at Breezy Hill a few minutes on our way home.
Sun. Aug. 21
Nice day. Pretty warm. Mon went down to Leonharts in A.M. Dean went over to
Blaess's & other places. When Mon got home we had a lunch & him
Arthur & I went back to the Fair. I went up in the Grand Stand with Fern
too watch the races, ballgame & free acts. Very large crowd there again
today. Saw Ruth & Mrs. Keefe & visited with them awhile.
Mon. Aug. 22
Nice warm day again. The boys threshed at Happy's. Mama & Lester came
down about 10 A.M. to pull the weeds out of the potatoes. They got thro'
about 2. Mon went to B.O. & spent the P.M. We went up town in eve. Olive
& I went up home awhile. We got home about 10:30. Had a bad wind storm in
the nite. Quite a lot of sharp thunder & lightning but not much rain. Blew
the house full of dirt.
Tues. Aug. 23
Dandy nice day but pretty warm. The boys went to Wilhelm's to thresh today.
Mon & I went down to Claudes about 9 A.M. Mon came home about 10 & I
stayed too help Olive with threshers. They broke down early in A.M. so didn't
get to Claude until after dinner so we didn't have them until supper.
Mon came down late in P.M. & stayed until after supper. We got home about
6:30. They boys didn't get home until about 7:30. Sprinkled some in the
nite.
Wed. Aug. 24
Nice warm day. Arthur threshed at Billie Lang's for Dave & it was
after 8 P.M. when he got home. Mon & Dean did odd jobs. They set posts in
P.M. & then the pigs got out so they had to quit that & come & chase
pigs. Olive & I were supposed to sing at the M.E. Church in eve but it was
8:45 when we got up town so it was too late to go to the church. Cool nite.
Thurs. Aug. 25
Nice day. The men did a little of everything. Mon & I went to Bluffton in
P.M. Came home across Pine Creek & up the new road. Not very good road either.
They are getting quite a bit done.
Fri. Aug. 26
Nice day. Arthur didn't feel very good. Mon & Dean went threshing at Dawley's.
It was about 7 when they got home. I washed & ironed.
Sat. Aug. 27
Nice day. The boys hauled manure all day. Mon & I took papa & mama to
Mabel in P.M. Uncle Marion was in B.O. & he went from there with us. He
got a gasoline engine over there & we bro't it home for him. We went
to B.O. in eve. Marion went with us from Ludwigs. I went up to the Pavilion.
Dean went to Matter's with Arthur W.
Sun. Aug. 28
Nice day. We went over to Dell's about 9 & stayed until about 11:30. Came
home & changed our clothes & picked up a lunch & went to mamas.
Had a picnic there for Uncle Albert's. Dell's, Aunt Lissa, Claudes, Lesters,
Lizzie & Maxine, Lily B., Lena & Clifford were all there. Had a dandy
dinner. Ella Thayer & Jimmie were there in P.M. Mon, Arthur & I went
to the Show in eve. "Boy Meets Girl". It was rotten. Dean didn't feel very well
so he didn't go.
Mon. Aug. 29
Foggy & damp early in A.M. but cleared up & was a nice day. Dean didn't
feel very good until late in P.M. He laid around all day. Mon & Arthur hauled
manure in A.M. & Arthur cleaned out the fence row & worked at the fence
in P.M. Mon & I went over to Lizzie's a few minutes in P.M. We went
up town in eve. Went up home a few minutes. Uncle Albert's, Aunt Lissa,
Lester & Isa were there too.
Tues. Aug. 30
Cloudy most of the day but didn't rain any. Roscoe Dawley was over early
in A.M. & the boys made up to go to Des Moines to the Fair so Arthur &
Dean went & got Roscoe & Clifford D. & left for Des Moines. Mon
& I went to Decorah in P.M. with Pearl & Howard. We got new batteries
for the radio so we could have that going. There was a bad accident on the big
hill just before we came along on our way home. Two cars smashed head on. Carl
Dotreth was drunk & on the wrong side of the road. He didn't get hurt
but the folks in the other car did.
Wed. Aug. 31
Dandy day. I washed & did part of my ironing. Happy was here awhile in A.M.
Pearl took her mother, Doris & I to Lutheran L.A.S. in P.M. Kate Leonhart
& Nora Lang served at the church parlors. They had a swell lunch & a
good crowd.

Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Did a little of everything.
Fri. Sept. 2
Nice warm day. I went to Club at Inez Whitney's with Pauline Lange in
P.M. Quite a crowd out & a swell lunch. The boys got home about 2:30 &
then they & Mon went to B.O. awhile. They had a good time while they were
gone. Mon, Dean & I went to Bluffton in eve to do some trading. Shower for
Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Halse at the Pavilion but we didn't go.
Sat. Sept. 3
Nice day. Mon went to B.O. early in A.M. too help Lovlien's move. They
bought the Ike Gates home & moved today. The boys went down to the creek
fishing in P.M. They got quite a few little ones. We went to B.O. in eve. I
went up to the Pavilion. Quite a crowd there. We got home about 1:30.
Sun. Sept. 4
Dandy day but pretty warm. Mon & Dean went fishing in A.M. but didn't
get any. Arthur & I went up home in P.M. awhile. Papa had a bad spell this
A.M. but he was feeling better in P.M.
Mon. Sept. 5
Cloudy early in A.M. & sprinkled some & then got to raining harder.
Rained quite hard at times in P.M. & most of the night too. Pearl &
Darlene were here awhile in A.M. Big doings at Community Hall but too wet &
muddy to go.
Tues. Sept. 6
Not so nice early in A.M. but was quite nice along toward noon & for awhile
in P.M. & then it started in raining again. Didn't do much of anything.
Dean went to B.O. & Canton with Leonard Blaess late in A.M. The jersey cow
had a calf this A.M.
Wed. Sept. 7
Very nice early in A.M. but clouded up & wasn't so nice the rest of
the day. I washed but didn't get all of the clothes dry. Ironed some.
Thurs. Sept. 8
Not very nice day. Rained most of the day. Didn't do so much.
Fri. Sept. 9
Not such a bad day. The sun shone most of the day. The boys went up to Quandahl's
& got a bushel of apples in P.M. Picked them off the trees $1.00 Ludwig
gave them a bushel of wind falls. They fixed fence after they got home. Mon
& I went up home about 4 P.M. for a while. It rained hard in the nite.
Sat. Sept. 10
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Pretty warm
in P.M. We went to Decorah about 1. I got my hair fixed. Maxine rode home from
Decorah with us. We had quite a time getting across the culvert on our way home.
There were two big holes in it & the men had to hunt up planks to put across.
We went to B.O. in eve, but went thro' the hills. I went up to the Pavilion.
We got home about 1:30.
Sun. Sept. 11
Pretty cloudy in A.M. & in P.M. Rained off & on in P.M. Sometimes quite
hard. Arthur & I went up home in P.M. & then Arthur went on to Canton
too roller skate. Lester & Isa & the boys were up home awhile in P.M.
too. Rained in the nite again.
Mon. Sept. 12
Nice day. Old Nell got down yesterday & couldn't get up so we had
the undertaking truck come up & get her in A.M. Marion was here all day.
The men worked at the corn binder all day. Happy & Audry were here in A.M.
Audry got some elder berries.
Tues. Sept. 13
Cloudy in A.M. Started to rain about noon & rained hard at times all P.M.
Mon & I went down to Claude's about 9 & got some tomatoes. Marion
came over in A.M. to help make fence & they worked at it until noon. The
boys took him up to the mail box about 3 P.M. with the team & wagon. I canned
apples & elderberries in P.M. It rained terribly hard in the nite again.
Quite a bit of lightning & thunder.
Wed. Sept. 14
Rained hard early in A.M. & was cloudy until in P.M. it cleared off &
was nice. Quite a bit cooler. I canned tomatoes in P.M. Pearl & Darlene
were here in P.M. Frank Reed took the jersey cow & her calf & the bull
to Decorah this A.M. to have them down there for the Community Sale this P.M.
Dean went over to Howard's in eve.
Thurs. Sept. 15
Quite a nice day. I washed in A.M. We took papa & mama to Decorah in P.M.
Stopped a few minutes up there before we came home. I ironed in eve. Martin
Jarstaad's were here awhile in eve. Happy & Dell Mc. & Howard were here
in A.M. We got paid for the cattle from the Community sale yesterday. The cow
& calf bro't $54.00 & the bull $62.15 & there was $4.16 com. out
so they bro't $111.99.
Fri. Sept. 16
Nice day. Arthur started cutting corn for Happy this A.M. The men came back
too work on our part of the road this A.M. Mon & I left home at 8:15 A.M.
& got Dell Mc. & went to Davenport. Had dinner in Dubuque & got
to Davenport about 2:30 P.M. rode around town awhile & got to Aunt Eunice's
about 3:30. They were surprised too see us. Vin took Aunt Eunice, Mettie &
I around town quite a ways. Went down to Ella's. Mon, Dell & Sonny
went in our car. Mettie has been down doctoring & we came down after her.
We all went down town in eve to an Auction sale. Got to bed about 11.
Sat. Sept. 17
Quite nice early in A.M. but clouded up & started raining about noon. Kept
it up all the rest of the day & nite. Pretty hard at times too. We all went
down town about 9. Went to the Mississippi Hotel where Uncle Albert works &
he showed us all over that & then we rode around town. Mon & Sonny went
with our car & the rest of us went with Vin. Shopped some & then went
down too see Ruth. Too much water to suit me. The river is so high. Went back
to Aunt Eunice's for dinner & then Vin, Aunt Eunice, Mettie, Dell
& I rode all over E. Moline, Moline, Rock Island & Davenport in the
rain. Uncle Albert took Dell, Mettie, Mon, Sonny & I over to Metties Dr's.
in eve & then down town & then to the Dr. Palmer Broadcasting station.
We got back to Aunt E's. about 8 & played cards the rest of the eve.
Dell, Mettie & I went to see the "Little Bit of Heaven" in P.M.
too.
Sun. Sept. 18
Dandy day. Mettie went to the Dr's. for the last time about 9 & then
to Earl's. Mon, Sonny & I went in our car & then we took quite
a long ride around the city. Got back to Aunt Eunice's about 10:30 &
got our things together & started for home about 10:50. Came home thro'
Iowa City. Stopped at Neva's for dinner. She has a nice home. Rode around
Cedar Rapids & Center Point & stopped at Olwein on our way home &
got back to Dell's at 6:30. Came right on home. The boys were just finishing
the chores when we got home. Leonard B. was here awhile in eve. Pretty cold
nite.
Mon. Sept. 19
Cold & cloudy day. Sun shone a little. Mon & the boys picked seed corn
in A.M. & I gathered in tomatoes. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in P.M.
& then Mon & I took the folks to Mabel. Dean got a hair cut. Arthur
went hunting in P.M. Cold nite.
Tues. Sept. 20
Our 22nd Wedding Anniversary. Nice day. Some warmer. I washed & ironed.
Mon cut corn at Happy's. Arthur took the car to B.O. in A.M. too have
Roy overhaul it. He got home about 2. Dean helped Chas. Wernett hay in P.M.
Wed. Sept. 21
Nice warm day. Mon cut corn at Happy's until in P.M. rather late. Arthur
went over & finished up the day. Roy bro't the car part way tonite
& then walked up to the house & then Mon & Arthur went & took
him back to B.O. Dean went over to Howard's in eve. I went over to Lizzie's
in P.M. & made kraut.
Thurs. Sept. 22
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Arthur cut corn at Happy's in A.M. He finished
at noon. Marion came over for dinner & then Mon, Dean, Marion & I went
to Decorah in P.M. Irene Gilberts[on?] rode up from Decorah with us. We took
her to B.O. & then took Marion home. Arthur dug some potatoes in P.M. Pearl
& Darlene came over in A.M. & Darlene wanted to stay so she stayed until
we went to Decorah. We took her home then.
Fri. Sept. 23
Dandy warm day. The men worked at the fence. I did a little of everything. Bill
Koenig was here awhile after dinner. Dean helped Happy shock corn in P.M. We
went to Bluffton in eve & he went along with us from there.
Sat. Sept. 24
Nice day. Quite warm. The men fixed fence all day. We went up town in eve. I
went up to the Pavilion. It was carnival nite & it sure was a loud nite.
Sun. Sept. 25
Dandy day. Claude's came over & spent the day. The boys went hunting
& fishing in P.M. Roscoe D. was here awhile at noon. Harry Q's were
here early in eve & Howard was here awhile in eve.
Mon. Sept. 26
Dandy day only a little while at noon it clouded up & we had a little shower
but not much. Mon went up & got papa & mama about 9 A.M. & Mama,
Dean & I dug potatoes. Arthur helped late in P.M. Uncle Aaron came over
in A.M. & stayed until after dinner. The men finished the fence around the
grove & turned the pigs in there. Mon started cutting corn here at home
in P.M. Arthur took the folks home about 5. The men worked on our part of the
road today.
Tues. Sept. 27
Dandy day. Pretty warm. The folks were down again today & we finished digging
& picking up the late potatoes. Mon & Arthur worked at the corn until
about 4 P.M. they came & helped with the potatoes. Mon, Dean & I took

Dandy day. Arthur went & got the folks early in A.M. & then took them
home after dinner. Mama helped me with the washing & they fixed tomatoes
for catsup. I ironed in P.M. We went up to Richard's in eve. The men folks
went up town awhile. Doris fixed my hair.
Thurs. Sept. 29
Dandy warm day. We got up about 5, had our breakfast & left for Waterloo
at 6:15 for the Dairy Cattle Congress. Leonard bro't Claude & Olive
over & Dean, Mon & I went. Arthur didn't want to go. We got down
there about 8:30. Run around all day taking in all the sights we could. Sure
did see a lot. Everything was just fine. Went up in the Hippodrome in eve to
the show. It was a great show. Got out of there about 11 & then run around
the grounds until about 12 & came home. Got home about 3. Took Claude &
Olive home on our way home. Went & came thro' Cresco.
Fri. Sept. 30
Dandy day. The men cut & shocked corn all day. Mon took me down to Olive's
at noon too Club. Not so many out but we had a good time & a swell lunch.
Arthur & Dean came after me about 5. Gust & Dave were here awhile in
A.M.
Sat. Oct. 1
Pretty warm day. The men worked at the corn all day. Mon finished cutting the
east piece in A.M. & cut some on the north. He picked up corn in P.M. He
& I went to Bluffton about 5:30 to do some trading. We went to B.O. in eve.
I went up to the Pavilion. Arthur & Dean went to Decorah to the show in
eve. We got home about 1.
Sun. Oct. 2
Dandy nice warm day. The boys went hunting early in A.M. & didn't
get home until about 5. Mon was over to Dave's awhile in A.M. We went
up home about noon & took the folks to Decorah. Geo. Stoskoph's are
here from Kansas & Leonard, Merle & Lennie Emery & his wife from
Pine River Minn. & the relatives had a picnic for them at the Decorah Park
so we went down for a little while. Saw quite a few of the relatives. We came
home the river road. Marie went to Iowa City today with Neva to work for her.

Dandy day. Pretty warm. The men worked at the corn. Mon, Dean & I went to
B.O. in P.M. & Mon & I took the folks to Mabel too see the Dr. Dean
stayed at B.O. We got back about 3:30 & they went back at the corn. Finished
cutting corn tonite. Dean went over to Howards in eve. Marion & Happy were
here awhile in eve.
Tues. Oct. 4
Dandy day. Pretty hot. Mon started cutting corn for Dave this A.M. The boys
finished shocking & tying the corn in A.M. & dug potatoes in P.M. We
went up town in eve. I went up home.
Wed. Oct. 5
Rather cloudy day. Not much sunshine & much cooler. Mon cut corn at Dave's.
Arthur went to Happy's too work. I washed & ironed. Dean did odd jobs.
He went hunting in P.M. The first game of the "World Series" ballgame
played at Chicago today. Cubs & Yankee's. Yankees won 3-1.
Thurs. Oct. 6
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon cut corn at Dave's in A.M. Arthur worked
at Happy's. Dean & I dug potatoes in the garden in A.M. Mon &
Dean got a jag of corn in P.M. I picked up potatoes late in P.M. Listened to
the second game of the "World Series". Yankees won 6-3. Marion came
home with Arthur from Happy's & we all went to B.O. I went up home.
Fri. Oct. 7
Grand day. Mon finished cutting corn at Dave's about 3 P.M. The boys finished
digging potatoes this A.M. Arthur took papa & mama to Decorah in P.M. Dean
& I picked up the potatoes & husked a bushel of popcorn. Dean went over
to Howard's in eve.
Sat. Oct. 8
Papa's & Mama's 48th Wedding Anniversary. Dandy day. Mon went
up town early in A.M. & then he started to cut some more corn here at home.
Broke the binder so he didn't get very much cut in A.M. Mon & I went
to Decorah in P.M. I got my hair fixed. Mr. & Mrs. Lovlien rode home from
Decorah with us & came home with us to supper. We went up town in eve. I
went up to the Pavilion. Marion was here for dinner. The white cow had twin
calves today.
Sun. Oct. 9
Grand day. Dean went down to Claude's early in A.M. & the rest of
us went up & got the folks later & took them down there. Lester's
were there too & Uncle Aaron. Had a good dinner & good time. Listened
to the Ball game. Yankees won 5-2 finishing the series. The white cow had milk
fever when we got home. Had Dr. Reede down. The calves are sure nice.
Mon. Oct. 10
Beautiful day. Mon finished cutting corn in A.M. The boys did odd jobs around
here for awhile & then went down & shocked until noon. The boys got
a jag of corn in P.M. The white cow was sick again in P.M. & I telephoned
for Dr. but he didn't get here until about 6:30. He had to come back again
about 10:30 or 11. Mon didn't get to bed until about 1. The cow was better
then. It started to rain about 2:30 & we had a pretty hard electrical storm.
Rained quite hard too.
Tues. Oct. 11
Rainy in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was very nice. The men finished
shocking & tying corn today.
Wed. Oct. 12
Not so nice today. Sun shone part of the day though. Had quite a little shower
late in P.M. The men got a jag of corn in A.M. & Arthur started plowing
over east in P.M. Mon went up town a few minutes late in P.M. Lutheran L.A.S.
dinner & sale today but I had no way too go.
Thurs. Oct. 13
Grand day. I washed in A.M. Mon & Dean helped Lester Mc. saw wood at Connie
Johnsons all day. Happy came over this A.M. & plowed here all day. He is
plowing over next to Dave. Arthur plowed in P.M. I went to Club at Luella's
with Pauline Lang in P.M. Her car didn't work very good when we started
for home & Anita pushed us to B.O. & she left her car there & drove
Ben's car home.
Fri. Oct. 14
Dandy nice day. Happy came & plowed until noon & then Mon took him home
& Arthur run the tractor. Arthur plowed with the horses in A.M. Mon &
Dean did odd jobs in A.M. Mon plowed awhile in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve.
I went to a play in the Hall given by the M.E.L.A.S. "Deacon Squibs".
They all did just fine. Very large crowd. Mon had such a cold we didn't
get much rest during the nite.
Sat. Oct. 15
Sprinkled a little here early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day.
Arthur plowed. He finished about 4 P.M. & took the tractor home. Mon went
over after him. Mon & Dean got a jag of corn in A.M. Mon & I took the
folks to Mabel in P.M. Papa isn't so well. Clem Brace ground feed here
just after dinner. We went up town in eve. I went up to the pavilion. We got
home about 11:45.
Sun. Oct. 16
Dandy day. We went up home about 10 A.M. & helped set up the hard coal stove.
Lester & Isa were there & helped too. We stayed for dinner & awhile
in P.M. Olive & Marion came & stayed while Claude & Marvin went
to the ball game. Papa doesn't feel very good. He was pretty bad most
of the nite, tonite.
Mon. Oct. 17
Dandy day. Arthur plowed all day. I sold the old hens & roosters this A.M.
to Gordon Baker. 57 hens & 3 roosters bro't me $19.75 hens 9¢
per lb. & roosters 7¢. Mon & I went up home awhile in P.M. They
called for us to come in eve & I stayed all nite. Papa wasn't as bad
as last nite, but he didn't get any rest. Aunt Till & Gertie &
Lawrence & Olive & Claude & Isa were there in eve too.
Tues. Oct. 18
Started raining about 6:30 & rained quite hard at times until about 10.
Wasn't so nice the rest of the day but the sun shone some. Cooler. Mon
& the boys came up about 10. We came home & changed our clothes &
went to Decorah. Isa came along with us. Got back to B.O. about 2:30. Stayed
up home for awhile. Got home about 4. Papa had a good sleep this A.M. for about
an hour & then he felt quite a lot better & did the rest of the day.
Put in a good nite. I got a new pair of shoes & overshoes. Mon got shoes
& rubber & Arthur got new rubbers.
Wed. Oct. 19
Colder day. Mon & the boys husked corn in A.M. & the boys picked &
picked up in P.M. Mon & I went up home in P.M. & Mon took Mama to Mabel
too see Dr. Nass. Papa has the pleurisy so bad. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. & Arthur went over to Walt's.
Thurs. Oct. 20
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Arthur plowed. Mon went over to Marions
in A.M. Dean cut wood in A.M. & Mon helped him in P.M. Mon, Dean & I
went up town in eve. I went up home. Dell & Mettie, Olive & Marvin were
there too. Papa feels better tonite, but didn't put in such a good nite.
Fri. Oct. 21
Nice day but cool. The boys hauled up wood in A.M. Mon helped Richard B. thresh
beans. Arthur plowed in P.M. Mon & I went up home late in P.M. Papa feels
better. We went up to the school house in eve to their program. They sure had
a good program & a large crowd.
Sat. Oct. 22
Sprinkled & rained all A.M. & it turned into snow about noon & snowed
the rest of P.M. & all nite I guess a good share of it melted as it fell
but it got colder at night & some of the snow stayed. Arthur got up early
& went up to Richard's about 6 too help him cut down some trees so
the men could grade the road past there. Mon went up & helped Ludwig take
up his fence. He came home at noon & then it stormed so he didn't
go back in P.M. Arthur came home about 9:30 & he & Dean went to the
County corn husking contest at Albert Newhouse's. They didn't get
home until after 3. Ed D. was here awhile at noon.
Sun. Oct. 23
Nasty day. Regular blizzard at times. Didn't do much of anything. Got
quite a bit colder at nite. Froze quite a little tonite.
Mon. Oct. 24
Dandy day. I washed & ironed. Arthur plowed in A.M. Mon & Dean took
out fence in A.M. down by Fritz corner. They also helped Ludwig & Fritz
take out some of their fence. Mon & I went up home right after dinner a
little while Ed D. came & sawed a pile of old fence posts & junk for
us in P.M. Fritz helped. There were here for supper. Papa is better today.
Tues. Oct. 25
Dandy day. Quite warm. Marion came over in A.M. & he & Mon started building
a garage. Arthur finished plowing about 9:30 A.M. Mon, Marion & I went up
home about 10 A.M. too ask papa some things about the building. We took Marion
home in eve.
Wed. Oct. 26
Nice day but cool & windy. Marion came over early again this A.M. to help
with the garage. Mon & I went up home about 9:30 A.M. I stayed with papa
while Mon took mama over to Mabel too see the Dr. We got home about 12. Arthur
& I went up home a few minutes in P.M. Dr. Nass came over too see papa while
we were there.

Dandy, nice day. Marion came over & helped with the garage again today.
Mon went up & got the folks early in A.M. & they spent the day here.
We took them home about 4. We went up town in eve. I went up home. Dean husked
corn in A.M. & Arthur helped him in P.M.

Dandy day. Marion came & helped with the garage again today. Mon took me
to Club at Gladys A's. in P.M. Not many out but we had a good time &
a good lunch. Mon & Marion went to a beer & card party at Gust's
early in eve & then up to Richard's about 12 & spent the rest
of the nite there playing cards. Mon got home at 5 A.M.

Dandy nice day. The boys went over to Marions early in A.M. & got a load
of pumpkins. Marion came home with them. He & Mon worked at the garage.
The boys husked corn. Mon, Marion & I went to Bluffton a few minutes in
P.M. too do some trading. The boys went to town in eve. They took Marion home
first.

Dandy day. We went over to Marions about 11 & took our dinner along. Albert's
were there too also Clifford Dawley. Had a dandy dinner. The boys went hunting
in P.M. Mon & I went up home about 4 P.M. for a little while. Papa feels
some better.

Dandy day. I washed & ironed. Marion came over & he & Mon finished
the garage enough so we can put the car in it. The boys husked corn. Pearl &
Verna were over a little while in eve. Mon, Marion & I went up town a few
minutes in P.M. Went up home a minute. Mon & the boys took Marion home in
eve.
Tues. Nov. 1
Rather cloudy early in A.M. & sprinkled a little but cleared off & was
a grand day. Pretty warm. Mon & the boys went over & helped "Happy"
stack corn fodder today. Mon & Arthur came home for supper but Dean stayed
& helped Happy. We went up town in eve & went & got Dean on our
way up. Walt W. rode up town & back with us. Ruth Padden came up home today
& then she came down after me about 12 & I went up there for dinner
too. Vick Johnson was there for dinner too. Isa came up in P.M., also Annie,
Babe & Norah. Ruth bro't me home about 3:30. Papa, mama & Isa rode along
down with us.

Dandy nice day. Mon & the boys helped "Happy" again today. I
did a little of everything.
Thurs. Nov. 3
Sprinkled early in A.M. & then started to rain about noon & kept it
up the rest of the P.M. & nite too. Didn't do much of anything.
Fri. Nov. 4
Rained all day again & some times quite hard. We picked over our potatoes
this P.M. Dave was over in A.M. Papa was not so well this A.M. & they tried
to get Dr. Nass but he was sick so they had Dr. Fritchen & they took papa
to Decorah to the Hospital.
Sat. Nov. 5
Quite a nice day. We went to B.O. in A.M. & got Mama & Isa & went
to Decorah. We went right to the Hospital. Papa was not very well. Mama stayed
& the rest of us went back down town until about 4. We went back to the
Hospital. Papa wasn't so well so Isa & I stayed there. We couldn't get in
to see him but spent our time in the sun parlor. Olive & Claude came down
about 6:30. Mon came back about 9. We stayed at the Hospital until about 10.
Had to wait up town for Arthur until 11. He went to the show. Had to wait awhile
in B.O. for Dean. We all went to see Ray McCauley in P.M. He is in the Hospital
with infection in his hands. Pauline McCabe Lawler is in the Hospital too. Snowed
some in eve.
Sun. Nov. 6
Not very nice day. Arthur took Olive & I to the Hospital in P.M. We couldn't
get in to see papa though. Spent the P.M. in the sun parlor. Sid Brickner, Lee
Fox's & Ella Hicks were in to see us. We got home about 5. Went to
bed early & about 8:30 Mama called for us to come & help her care for
papa so Mon & I went. Mama went & laid down about 11 & didn't
get up until about 5 A.M. Papa was quite restless until about 12:30 he quited
down & was quiet the rest of the nite. Dr. F. was there about 12 too see
him.
Mon. Nov. 7
Snowed a little off & on all day until late in P.M. & then it sure did
snow & blow. We got home from the Hospital about 6 A.M. & mama called
us about 10 A.M. that papa was very bad so Mon & I went & got Isa &
went down there. Claude's were there when we got there. He was very bad
all day. He rallied again about 6 P.M. & knew us part of the time. Mon &
Claude hired a special nurse for the nite. Miss Bernatz & so we all came
home or rather Mon & I stayed with mama. It was a terrible blizzard when
we came home. Got to B.O. about 9 P.M. Lena was down to see papa in P.M.
Tues. Nov. 8
Dandy day. Thawed a lot. We got up early & got down to the Hospital a little
after 7. Papa was restless all day but better than yesterday. Mon & I went
up town for dinner. Ruth Padden came too see papa in P.M. so she stayed with
mama all nite & we came home. Got home about 5:30. The roads are not very
good.
Wed. Nov. 9
Dandy day. I washed & ironed. Mon & the boys did quite a few things.
Papa is about the same today only weaker. Olive & Claude went down this
A.M. too stay the day & nite.
Thurs. Nov. 10
Dandy nice day. We went to B.O. early in A.M. & got Isa & went to Decorah.
Isa went back with Claude's when they went home about 10 A.M. & we
stayed. Papa got weaker all day. He didn't know any of us all day or didn't
talk any. Mama went & laid down about 9:30 P.M. & rested during the
nite. Papa passed away at 3 A.M. We left the Hospital about 3:30 & went
to mama's & spent the rest of the nite.
Fri. Nov. 11
Dandy day. We came down home early in A.M. & had breakfast with the boys
& I did dishes & separator & then Mon, Dean & I went back to
B.O. Arthur went shredding at Dawley's today. Claude's came up to
mama's about 10 A.M. We had a lunch about 11:30 & then Claude &
Olive, Mama, Mon & I went to Decorah & Dean came home. We went to the
Funeral Home & picked out the casket & made the funeral arrangements.
Orrie Iverson is the undertaker. We got back up home about 2:30 & we stayed
there until about 4:30. Olive stayed with Mama all nite. The jersey heifer had
a calf today.
Sat. Nov. 12
Not very nice in A.M. Sprinkled & rained quite hard at times in A.M. but
cleared off in P.M. & was real nice. Some colder though. Arthur went to
Charley W's. shredding in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went up home in P.M.
Mon, Mama & I went to Decorah a few minutes. We went up to the Funeral Home
too see papa. He sure looks nice. Mama had quite a lot of company. Mag had a
calf today.
Sun. Nov. 13
Nice bright day but cold & windy. Wind blew quite hard. We went up home
about 10. Claude's & Lester's were there too. (Marie came home
last nite). We had a lunch there & then went to Decorah. Rev. Prust had
just a prayer at the Funeral Home & then we went to the M.E. Church at B.O.
for the rest of the service. Very large crowd. The church was full also the
basement. Zoa, Alberta, Arthur & Philip sang "Over Just Beyond the
Hilltops", "It Is Well With My Soul", & "Does Jesus
Care". We went up home after the services. Quite a lot of the relatives
were there & had lunch. Aunt Alice, Florence & Iona served the lunch.
Uncle Omri & Susan came from Mason City & they stayed all nite with
Mama. We came home about 5:30.

Dandy nice day but cold. Mon shredded at Willard's & Arthur at Howard's.
They both got home in time for supper. Dean & I did lots of odd jobs. We
went up home in eve. Marie is staying a few days with mama. Another calf tonite.

Nice day but rather cool. Mon shredded at Jaarstad's & Arthur &
Dean at Fred's.
Wed. Nov. 16
Dandy nice day. Arthur shredded at Gilbert's & Dean at Dave's.
They both got home for supper. I washed in A.M. I washed windows in P.M. &
Mon put on storm windows.
Thurs. Nov. 17
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & looked stormy but didn't storm.
Arthur shredded at Harry's & Dean at Mike's & Richard's.
They were both home early. Arthur & Mon fixed a rack too shred in after
Arthur got home. We went up town in eve awhile. I went up home. They hauled
gravel on our road today.
Fri. Nov. 18
Dandy nice day but quite windy. Mon went about 6:30 & got mama & Uncle
Marion. We shredded today with Winfield Bender's rig. Got thro about 3:15.
Pearl helped us get dinner. Arthur & I took mama home about 4:30. Arthur,
Marion & I went over to the Van Vleit school in eve to their program. (Norris
first program). It was good. They served lunch afterward. Mon & Dean went
up town. We got home about 11.
Sat. Nov. 19
Dandy day. Arthur shredded at Joe Moran's for Ole A. today. We sold 2
steers & a pig this A.M. Frank Reed hauled them. We went up home for dinner
& then mama went to Decorah with us. I got my hair fixed. We got back up
home about 4 & then mama came on home with us & stayed for supper. We
came home past Ole's & Arthur rode home with us. We went back up town
in eve. Mon milked mama's cow for her. Olive & the kids & Lester
& Isa were there too. We wrote out the cards of thanks. Wrote 82. 1 hog
weighed 210 lbs @ $7.00 - 2 steers - 1020 lbs. @ $5.00 $65.70.

Quite a nice day but a little cool. Dean went hunting with Arthur W. early in
A.M. & didn't get back until P.M. Mon, Arthur & I went up home for dinner
& spent the P.M. Mon went down town awhile. Aunt Alice was down to mama's
in P.M. too.

Quite nice & warm in A.M. but turned colder in P.M. & got quite cold.
The wind blew quite hard too. Arthur went shredding for Ole over to Glen Reed's.
He didn't get home until about 6. Mon & Dean husked corn all day.

minutes at noon. Went up home a minute. Another calf today, a heifer.
Thurs. Nov. 24
Very nice early in A.M. but clouded up & snowed off & on all day. Not
much though. Rather cool. The men husked corn in A.M. & then we went up
home for dinner. Claude's, Lester's, Dell's, Aunt Lissa, Raymond,
Neva & Bobbie were all there. Had a dandy dinner. We all took something
for dinner. Neva bro't ice cream & it sure was good. We got home about
4:30. Dean went over to Howard's in eve.

Not very nice day. Snowed off & on all day. Sometimes quite hard. The men
husked corn until it got to snowing too hard in P.M. I washed in A.M. Mon took
me over to Brayton's at noon & I went to Club with her at Laura Berg's.
Not so many out but we sure had a good time & a swell lunch. Mon came over
to Brayton's for me about 4:30.

W. butchered a hog for us today.

in A.M. Clem Brace ground feed here this A.M. We went to Decorah about 11:30.
Marion went too. We took the meat down & put it in the locker. Mon took
Marion & I down to the Hospital too see Shirley in P.M. She is coming just
fine. We got home about 4:30. M.E.L.A.S. Sale & Dinner today but we didn't
go.

Dark & cool in A.M. & started to rain about 2 P.M. & rained off
& on. Started to snow about 6:30 & snowed quite a little. Mon went over
to Charley Ryan's in A.M. He took me up home in P.M. Olive & the boys,
Lester & Isa, Clara & LaVonne were there too. Loyal rode the pony down
here early in A.M. & didn't go home until after 4.
Mon. Dec. 5
Not such a nice day. Mon went to Decorah early in A.M. & didn't get
back until about 5. Went down too see about putting rock on the road from Fritz'
to the paving. We got our Soil Conservation money today $22.89. We went up town
in eve. I went up home. Aunt Till & Lawrence were there too.
Tues. Dec. 6
Not very nice day. Snowed off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. Wind
blew quite hard in P.M. We put the pullets in the chicken house in A.M. Jim
Murdock came in P.M. & bought 33 roosters & that left us 8 so we put
them in the hen house too. The roosters weighed 129 lbs. at 09¢ per lb.
$11.61.

Not very nice day. Sun shone a little though. The boys fixed fence in A.M. &
cut wood in P.M. Mon went up town a little while in P.M. Dean went over to Howard's
in eve. Shirley E. got home from the Hospital today. She got along just fine.

Not very nice day. Damp & cool. Got real cool at nite. Didn't do much

Dandy nice day. I washed in A.M. Mon & the boys went over to Happy's
in A.M. & then Mon took the boys up town & he came home. The boys waited
until after dinner & then Frank Reed bro't mama's cow down here.
They also got Happy's bull on the way down. Mon took me to B.O. after
dinner & I rode from there to Club at Anita's with Leonard & Olive.
Quite a crowd out & a swell lunch. Election of officers. Muriel T. Pres.

Rolfs Treas. Mon came over after us. We got home about 5. Dorothy Kipp Floyd
K's daughter was buried at B.O. today.
Sat. Dec. 10
Quite a nice day. The men folks did a little of everything. Finished fixing
up the fence in P.M. We went up town in eve. I went up home. Mon & I came
home about 11:30. Arthur went with Roscoe Dawley & Dean stayed in B.O. &
came home with Leonard B.
Sun. Dec. 11
Pretty nice day. Not so cold in A.M. but got quite cool late in P.M. & was
a cold nite. Mon & I went up & got mama about 11:30 & went over
to Lena's & spent the day. The boys stayed at home.
Mon. Dec. 12
Not very nice day. Snowed off & on all day & was quite cold. The boys
cut wood in P.M. Dave was over in A.M.
Tues. Dec. 13
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur helped Marion cut wood.
Mon & I went up to Red's in eve & Dean went over to Howards. Little
son born to Vera & Harry Q. tonite.
Wed. Dec. 14
Nice day but cold. Mon took the team over to Marion's & helped him
haul up his wood today. The boys & I went up & got mama & went to
Decorah about 10 A.M. The boys went to the John Deere Day up at Luther Gym.
Mama & I run around town in A.M. I got my hair waved & Mama got a hair
cut. We went to Claude Murdock's funeral service at the Burial Association
Funeral Home. Large crowd out. We got home about 4.
Thurs. Dec. 15
Cool again today. Mon & the boys went over to Marion's in P.M. too
saw wood. Had trouble with the saw & they didn't finish. Marion came
home to supper with them & we went up town in eve. The men went to Lodge,
Dean went skating awhile & then down town & I went to mama's.
Got home about 12:30.
Fri. Dec. 16
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & got quite a lot colder. Mon
& the boys went to Marion's in A.M. & finished sawing. The boys
cut wood in P.M. Mon & I went to Bluffton a little while in P.M.
Sat. Dec. 17
Quite a bright day but cold. We went to Decorah about 10:30. Very large crowd
in town. Santa Claus day. We got home about 4:30. Went up town in eve. I went
up to mama's.
Sun. Dec. 18
Dandy nice day but cool. Dean went down to the creek skating in P.M. Mon &
I went over to Harry's a few minutes in P.M. too see the new boy. He sure
is nice.
Mon. Dec. 19
Dandy day. I washed & ironed. The boys cut wood. Charley W. butchered a
beef for us in A.M. & a pig in P.M.
Tues. Dec. 20
Not such a nice day. Rather dark & damp. Mon & Arthur took the meat
to Decorah this A.M. They sold the pig to Howard Bradley & ¼ of the
beef. Put the rest of the beef in the locker. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O.
in P.M. Ruth Greenslade, Agnes, Olive & I filled the Joan of Arc Xmas boxes.
The Club had a food sale at Fred Glice's too.
Wed. Dec. 21
Beautiful day. The boys cut wood in A.M. Mon & I took Dave & Lizzie
to B.O. in A.M. Went up to Mama's a few minutes. Mon & Arthur went
down to Aunt Lissa's in P.M. too help saw some wood Lester had got up
for mama. Dean & I went up to the school house with Pearl to their Xmas
tree & program. It was fine. Ludwig & Levi Quandahl were here in eve.
Levi put in a radio for us too try.
Thurs. Dec. 22
Not very nice day. Snowed almost all day & some times quite hard. The wind
blew quite hard too. Mon went over to Happy's early in A.M. Mon &
I went up town in P.M. I went up home. The boys cut wood in P.M. Levi came &
got the radio this A.M. Lloyd K. was here & looked at the hogs late in P.M.
Fri. Dec. 23
Not such a nice day. Lloyd sent 2 trucks down about 9 A.M. after the hogs. Mon
went with one of the trucks & then the boys went with our car when they
finished the chores. We went up town in P.M. I went up home. Arthur went over
to Eloise McMullen's schoo[l] in eve to her program.
Sat. Dec. 24
Rather cool day. Snowed some in P.M. We went to Decorah about 11. Quite a crowd
in town. We got home about 4:30. We went to B.O. in eve. I went up to the M.E.
church to the Xmas program. Mama was there & I went home with her. We got
home a little after 11. Dave was here in A.M.
Sun. Dec. 25
Not very nice day. Dark & cold. Mon went over to Marion's early in
A.M. We went up home for dinner. Lester's were there too. The kids went
skating in P.M. on the creek. Quite a crowd there. We had another calf tonite.
Mon. Dec. 26
Not very nice day. Started to snow in P.M. & turned into a regular blizzard.
Got quite a lot colder in P.M. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. & the boys cut wood.
Tues. Dec. 27
Not very nice day. Regular blizzard at times. Mon went over to Gilberts in A.M.
to saw but it was too nasty they didn't saw. The boys worked at the wood
in P.M. some. Esther Erickson & Elmer Gilbertson were married today.
Wed. Dec. 28
Pretty cold day. Snow blew a lot in A.M. but it quieted down in P.M. Mon, Arthur
& I left here about 9:15 & took Henry Lovlien to La Crosse too see the
Dr. We got up there about 11:20. Dr. told him he was getting along fine. Had
dinner & then run around town until about 2:45 we left for home. I got some
new dishes. We got run into in the big city but didn't get hurt &
didn't hurt the car too much. We got home about 4:30. L. Van [Attas's?]
man came down this P.M. & set up a Philco radio for us to try.
Thurs. Dec. 29
Cold day but bright. Mon went to Gilberts too saw wood. Took them about all
day. The boys & I went up & got Mama about 12:30 & went to Decorah.
Fri. Dec. 30
Quite a nice day. Mon & Arthur went to Canton early in A.M. & Dean &
I stayed in B.O. Dean got a hair cut. I went to Mama's. We were all there
for dinner. Marie was there too. Olive came up in P.M. Ted Kimber died today.
Sat. Dec. 31
Not such a bad day only cold. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah about 11:30.
Fritz rode along with us. Got back to B.O. about 4:30. Stopped there a little
while. We went up town in eve. Mon went to Canton. I went up to mama's.
Arthur went over to Walt's & spent the eve. Ralphie G. bro't
him home. We got home a little after 12.
