Fri. Jan. 2
Beautiful day. Thawed quite a lot. Mon took me to Club at Florence Bakers in
P.M. Gladys A., Mae W. & Fannye R. went with us. Quite a crowd out. Election
of officers. Hilda E. Pres. Vera G. Vice Pres., Maude J. Sec., Gerthrude E.
Asst. Sec. & Irene F. Treas. I was put on the floral com. Don't like that
very well. Had a dandy lunch. The boys stayed at Morgans while we were gone.
Stopped at Gust's a few minutes on our way home. They are both rather under
the weather. Today was Mr. & Mrs. Rob. Stead's 50th Wedding Anniversary
& they had a party for them in the B.O. Hall.
Sat. Jan. 3
Beautiful day. Cleaned up the house a little. Lawrence M. was here awhile in
A.M. We went up town in eve. Went up home. Pretty foggy or frosty going up town
& back. Couldn't see very far ahead.
Sun. Jan. 4
Cloudy day. Everything covered with frost. We went up home & got the folks
about 10 & went down to Uncle Georges. Arthur went back & got Aunt Lissa
& Lenna. Claudes. Lesters, Dell's & Aunt Till were there too. We all
took something to eat. Had a dandy dinner & a good time. Mr. Deitel was
here awhile in eve.
Mon. Jan. 5
Rather cold day. Cloudy & windy. Papa was down in P.M. & chopped wood.
School started again today. Mon took me up to Fannye's in eve to practice. The
boys stayed home alone. The first time they have ever done that. We got home
about 10:30.
Tues. Jan. 6
Very nice day. Papa was here all day chopping. I washed part of the clothes
today.
Wed. Jan. 7
Not very nice day. Cloudy all day. Papa was here & chopped wood. We went
up town a few minutes in P.M. We had our Play at Cresco in eve. Mon & I
went with Bill & Hilda E. Got out there about 7:30. Had a good crowd. Had
a good time too, although "Stub" was pretty well "stewed."
Had our Play in the M.E. Church & after the Play they served us a lunch
in the S.S. rooms of the Church. Had sandwiches, cookies & coffee. 17 of
us were there for lunch the rest came home before lunch. We got home at 12:15.
Dean stayed at Morgan's & Arthur up home.
Thurs. Jan. 8
Quite a nice day. Papa was here & chopped wood again today.
Fri. Jan. 9
Dandy nice day. Papa & Lester were here & chopped wood today. Papa went
home at noon but Lester stayed until nite. I went over to Myrtle's in P.M. to
a Farm Bureau Meeting. We went up home for supper. Went to the dance in eve.
Very large crowd out. The boys stayed up home all nite. We got home at 2:30.
Sat. Jan. 10
Cloudy day. Snowed quite hard for a few minutes in A.M. We went over to Lovlien's
a few minutes in P.M. & then up home after the boys. Mary had a little calf
this A.M.
Sun. Jan. 11
Nice day. We went up to Lester's & spent the day. Claude's, Dell's &
the folks were there too. We all took our dinners. Had a dandy dinner too.
Mon. Jan. 12
Cold blustery day. Regular blizzard some times. The wind blew pretty hard. Papa
came down & chopped again today. Old Bell Cow had a calf this A.M.
Tues. Jan. 13
Another blustery windy day. Papa was down again all day. Mon helped Mike Blaess
saw (at Howards) all day. Jim, Chris & Dan M. were down & spent the
eve.
Wed. Jan. 14
Nice day. Warmed up & thawed quite a little. Papa came down & chopped
today. They finished cutting wood today.
Thurs. Jan. 15
Nice day only quite windy. South wind. Mon & I walked down across to Claude's
about 9 A.M. to help saw. Got home about 4. Had a nice walk. The Jersey cow
had a little calf today. Dave was over in eve.
Fri. Jan. 16
Dandy nice day. Mama & papa were here all day. Mama & I washed &
ironed. Mon & papa started hauling up wood today. Went home with papa &
mama & stayed all nite.
Sat. Jan. 17
Cloudy day. Not very cold though. Papa & Dean came down about 8:30. They
hauled up wood again today. Papa & the boys took a grist up town at noon.
We went up town in eve. The boys & I went up home.
Sun. Jan. 18
Regular blizzard but not cold. Snowed hard & the wind blew hard. Piled the
snow up pretty much in some places. We went up & got the folks in A.M. &
went down to Dell's & spent the day. Claude's, Lester's, Aunt Lissa &
Lenna were there too. Had a good time & a good dinner.
Mon. Jan. 19
Lovely day. Quite warm. Thawed quite a lot. Pearl was over in A.M. I sold some
hens in P.M. Got $11.20 for them. Dave was here awhile late in P.M. Arthur's
cow had a calf today.
Tues. Jan. 20
Nice day but quite cold. Mon & I went up & got papa in A.M. & went
to Decorah. I found my pocket book I lost before Xmas. We got a cwt. of potatoes
today. We stayed up home for dinner. May had a little calf today.
Wed. Jan. 21
Rather cool day. Papa came down & they hauled up wood. Got up all but about
2 loads. Dean was sick & didn't go to school today. Ed Dawley was here for
supper.
Thurs. Jan. 22
Nice day. Thawed some. We sawed more wood today. Took 6 hrs. Ed & John D.,
Howard, Richard B., Harold L., Claude & papa helped. Mama & Olive were
here too. The boys didn't go to school today.
Fri. Jan. 23
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Chas. Pollitt was here in A.M. early
& bought Babe (our gray horse) for $75.00. Mon took her up town about 10:30.
He didn't get back until about 3:30. We went up to the Dance in eve. Large crowd
out. Had a pretty good time. We got home about 2:30. The boys came home with
us.
Sat. Jan. 24
Dandy day. Thawed like everything. Mon helped Howard saw in A.M. We went up
town awhile in P.M. Stopped at Harry's & Gust's on our way home. We went
up to Harry's in eve & had ice cream. Celebrating Mon's 36th birthday.
Sun. Jan. 25
Another dandy day. Papa, mama, Claude's, Lester's, Dell's & Aunt Lissa &
Lenna were here & spent the day. Celebrating Mon's birthday again. They
all bro't their dinners & we sure had a good dinner.
Mon. Jan. 26
Lovely day. Glen Pierce came about 7:30 to grind feed for us. They ground 90
sacks. Got done about 11. The boys stayed at home in A.M. & helped. Mon
took them to school at noon & then he went up to Harry Morgan's. Mart Leonhart
was here in A.M. Josie had a little calf today.
Tues. Jan. 27
Nice day but the sun didn't shine much. We left home at 9 A.M. & went to
Padden's. Ruth lives this side of Castalia now but Francis still lives at Postville.
Mon & the boys went over & got him at noon. They were all glad to see
us. Mr. Ferris had broken his leg about 3 weeks ago but he is getting along
fine now. We stopped at Price's awhile on our way home. Dad was sick in bed
with a cold. We got home about 6.
Wed. Jan. 28
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was just fine in P.M. Thawed a lot.
Mon went over to Loveliens about 8:30 too saw & didn't get home until after
6 & then they didn't get through. We went up town in eve. Went up home awhile.
The white cow had a calf.
Thurs. Jan. 29
Dandy nice day again. Thawed like everything again. The ladies had a Farm Bureau
Meeting here today. Gladys A., Mrs. Quandahl, Dell, Mettie, Claude & Olive
were here for dinner. Myrtle M., Lizzie, Audry & Kate L. came in P.M. Had
a good dinner & a good meeting. Feet & their care & shoes was the
topic.
Fri. Jan. 30
Nice day. I washed & ironed. The boys came home from school at the first
recess. Grace was sick. We went to B.O. in eve. The Joan of Arc had a supper
for the play cast. Had a swell feed. Quite a crowd out. We got home about 12:30.
Sat. Jan. 31
Nice day. We went up home about noon & stayed until about 4:30. Olive &
the kids were there in P.M. too.
Sun. Feb. 1
Nice day. We went down to Aunt Till's & spent the day. It was her Birthday.
Papa, mama, Claude's, Lester's, Dell's, Aunt Lissa, Lenna, Uncle Aaron &
Aunt Maude were there too. We all took our dinner again. Had a dandy dinner
& a good time. We went over to Dave's & spent the eve.
Mon. Feb. 2
Very nice early in A.M. but clouded up & wasn't a very nice day. Mon went
& helped Ole A. cut wood in P.M. We went up town awhile in eve. Went up
home. Pretty foggy coming home.
Tues. Feb. 3
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice the rest of the day.
Thawed a lot. I fried down our meat, that is what was left.
Wed. Feb. 4
Lovely day. Mon & I went up & got Isa & Loyal & then went up
to Carl's & Hazel's for dinner. Had a good dinner & a good time. Carl's
father & mother were there in P.M. too. We got home about 5. The brown cow
had a calf today.
Thurs. Feb. 5
Beautiful day. I washed & ironed. Mon helped me quite a bit.
Fri. Feb. 6
Nice in A.M. but started to snow about noon & it sure snowed hard until
about 3:30. Mon & I went to Decorah about 11 & got home about 2:30.
Mon got some new clothes. We went to B.O. to the dance in eve. Went up home
a few minutes before the dance. Had a good time. Francis & Ruth came up.
We got home about 2:45. Dean stayed up home all nite. We got word tonite that
Aunt Emma Yager died last nite.
Sat. Feb. 7
Cloudy day, but not very cold. Dave was over in A.M. early. Arthur & Mon
went home with him & helped grind feed. We went up home for dinner. Had
a dandy good program on the radio all P.M. We got home about 5. Dean came home
with us.
Sun. Feb. 8
My 39th Birthday. Beautiful day. We went up home for dinner. They sure had a
surprise on me. Claude's, Lester's, Dell's, Aunt Lissa, Lenna, Aunt Till, Lawrence,
Francis & Ruth were there. We had a swell dinner & a fine time. Lester's,
Francis & Ruth & us stayed for supper too. Got home about 7. Ed Jackson
died this A.M. Aunt Emma was buried this P.M.
Mon. Feb. 9
Pretty cold day. Nice & bright though. Didn't do much of anything. Ray Hennings
was here for dinner.
Tues. Feb. 10
Nice bright day but cool. We went up town a little while in P.M. Went up home.
Mama doesn't feel very good. Dave, Lizzie, Maine & Eugene Dorval were here
& spent the eve. We had ice cream.
Wed. Feb. 11
Beautiful day. Nice & warm. Didn't do much of anything. Mon was gone all
day. Ole, Gladys & Marion were down & spent the eve. We played cards.
Had ice cream.
Thurs. Feb. 12
Not very nice day. Snowed terribly hard part of the day. Nice & warm though
but pretty damp. Mon & I went up & got papa in A.M. & went to Decorah.
Mr. & Mrs. Crouse & baby rode home with us. We got back up home for
dinner. Isa & Loyal were there too. Cleared off in the nite & got pretty
cold.
Fri. Feb. 13
Nice day but mighty cold & windy. Mon took me to Club at Anita Butler's.
Gladys, Audry & Fannye went too. Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy lunch. Got
home about 5. The boys had their Valentine Box at school today. They got a nice
lot of valentines. Dean had the head ache when he got home from school so he
was lying down when we got home.
Sat. Feb. 14
Nice day. Much warmer. I washed, ironed, scrubbed & baked. Dean feels some
better. Arthur took a load of wood up to the folks in P.M. Minda had a little
calf tonite.
Sun. Feb. 15
Nice day. We were alone all day & eve. Didn't do much of anything.
Mon. Feb. 16
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. Did a little of everything. Went up town in eve
to a dance. (Last before Lent). Gene McCabe & Vern Hayes got it up. Large
crowd. Had a pretty good time. Helped the folks serve lunch. Got home about
2.
Tues. Feb. 17
Not very nice day. Chilly & damp. Gladys & Ole & Gust came down
about 10 & I went to Paul Reed's Sale with them. The Joan of Arc served
lunch. Anita B., Iona M., Luella Y., Ethel M., Sena M., Florence B., Mae W.,
Ella R., Florence E., Hilda E., Elsie S., Miriam W. & I were the only Club
girls there so we had to all work. Had a good time too. Made about . Rather
slippery coming home. Got home about 4.
Wed. Feb. 18
Not very nice day. Pretty damp. Didn't do much of anything.
Thurs. Feb. 19
Not very nice day. Mon & I went up home for dinner. Olive's birthday. She
& Claude & Marvin and Isa & Loyal were there. Had a good time. Had
a good time. Got home about 4:30. Floyd Blaess was here for supper & until
about 9.
Fri. Feb. 20
Lovely day. Nice & warm. Ruth & Francis came about 2 & stayed for
supper & went to the dance with us. We had a good time while they were here.
Had a good time at the dance too. Quite a crowd out. Got home about 2:30. Dean
stayed up home all nite.

Dandy nice day. We went up town in P.M. Went up to mama's. Dean came home with
us.
Sun. Feb. 22
Beautiful day. Thawed the most it has at all. We went down to Claude's &
spent the day. Lester's, Papa & Mama, Dell's, Aunt Lissa, Lenna, Aunt Till
& Uncle Milo were there. Celebrating Olive's birthday. Had a swell dinner
& a fine time. Howard was over awhile in eve.
Mon. Feb. 23
Nice part of the time & part of the time rather cloudy. Mon & I took
mama to Decorah in A.M. Got back up home at noon. We were just going to eat
dinner when Lizzie called & said Henry's father & mother were here so
we came right home & I got dinner for them. They stayed until 3:30. Mon
went out to the paving with them when they went home too see that they got along
all right.
Tues. Feb. 24
Lovely day. We went to Decorah about 9 took mama down & she got her hair
bobbed & a permanent. Anne Cox did the work & it sure looks fine. Got
back up home about 2:30. Had a lunch there & then came home.
Wed. Feb. 25
Lovely day. I washed & ironed & did a lot of work. Mon was up to Ole's
all day helping saw wood. We went up town a little while in eve. Went up home
too.
Thurs. Feb. 26
Lovely day again. Had a Farm Bureau Meeting at Lizzie's today. Had a swell dinner
& a good time too for all our work. I rode over & back with Ole &
Gladys. Dell & Mettie, Olive & Claude, Ida Quandahl, Mrs. Lovelien,
Kate L., Jane G., Kate L., Myrtle M., Audry & Bernice were there too. Lesson
on clothes for the Pre School Child & Fancy Stitches.
Fri. Feb. 27
Snowed very hard in A.M. & such big flakes. Not a bit cold so it was pretty
wet. Ole took Gladys, Mrs. Seelye, Alice & I to Club at Florence E's. Quite
a crowd out. Sure had a swell lunch & a good time. Got home about 4:30.
Sat. Feb. 28
Nice day. We went up home for dinner. Isa & the boys were there too. Olive
& the kids came up in P.M.
Sun. Mar. 1
Dandy nice day. We went up home about 9:30 & got the folks & then we
went to Ruth's & Francis. Claudes, Dell's & Lester's went too. Arthur
rode down with Claudes. Harriet & Otto H. & the girls were there &
Oscar so we had quite a house full. We all took our dinner's & we sure had
a good dinner. Had a fine time too. Got home about 6:30.

Dandy nice day only cooler. I washed & ironed & did a lot of things.
Mon helped me with the washing. We made ice cream in P.M.
Tues. Mar. 3
Nice day. Pretty windy day & the wind was cold. We went up home for dinner.
Isa & Loyal came in P.M. & Alice M. was there awhile. She just got back
from Neb. She had been there all winter. Ray McCauley came home with the boys
& stayed all nite. We had 22 little pigs from 2 sows tonite.
Wed. Mar. 4
Nice warm day. Sun didn't shine all the time but it was nice anyway. Mon didn't
feel very good. Isa, Lester & the boys were down for supper. We made ice
cream this P.M. It snowed some in the nite.
Thurs. Mar. 5
Nice day. Snow all dissapeared. We went up town awhile in P.M. I went up home.
Mon doesn't feel very well.
Fri. Mar. 6
Quite a nice day. Mon was over to Dave's awhile in A.M. He doesn't feel any
better today. Arthur & I went to B.O. to the dance tonite. Went up to help
the folks with the supper. Came home as soon as it was over. Got home about
12:45. Had a good time while we were there.
Sat. Mar. 7
Cloudy, windy, cold day. Mon feels pretty bum. We went to B.O. about noon. Took
16 ½ doz. eggs up to Elsie S. for her. She is going to set the incubator.
Went up home for dinner & then went to Decorah in P.M. Mon went to see Dr.
Emmons about his throat. Stopped at his folks a few minutes on our way home.
Mart Leonhart & Asa Lang were here in A.M. Asa bought 1 old sow & pigs
for $34.
Sun. Mar. 8
Terribly windy day. Not so cold as yesterday but cold enough. Arthur went up
& got the folks in A.M. & took them back home about 4:30. Mart L. &
Asa L. were here shortly after dinner & Geo., Vera & Junior were here
late in P.M. for a while. Mon feels pretty bum today.
Mon. Mar. 9
Terribly windy day. Mon isn't any better today. Arthur didn't go to school.
Papa came down & helped all day. School Election today so there was only
1/2 day of school.
Tues. Mar. 10
Beautiful day. Nice & warm. Ole & Gladys came down about 10 & I
went down to Mettie's with them to a Farm Bureau Meeting. 15 ladies there. Had
a good meeting & a good time. Sure had a swell dinner. Mon is a little better
today. Arthur didn't go to school today either.
Wed. Mar. 11
Dandy nice day. Papa came down & helped Mon in A.M. Mon feels better today
but he is pretty weak. They took an old sow & little pigs down to C. A.
Lang. Mon & I went up town in P.M. awhile. Went up to Isa's. Stopped at
Gust's a few minutes on our way home. Took the boys over to Floyd A's. after
school to get a bull. I washed in A.M.
Thurs. Mar. 12
Cloudy day. Mon feels pretty good now. I ironed in A.M. Geo. McIntire was here
in P.M. & got a sow & pigs. Two men were up from the Decorah P.O. &
wanted Mon to go down & see Dad P. so we went down about 4. Stayed there
for supper. Papa came down & stayed with the boys. We got home about 7:15.
Did up the chores & went to B.O. Went up home. Geo. Sheley died tonite.
Richard Blaess was operated on at Decorah this A.M. & Harry Quandahl at
Postville. Both came through O.K.
Fri. Mar. 13
Not very nice day. Rained & snowed a little & was cooler. Mon took me
to Club at Hilda E's. Quite a few out. Had a nice lunch. Alice Morrison was
operated on at Decorah this A.M.
Sat. Mar. 14
Not very nice day. Cloudy & colder. We went up town in P.M. Went up home
awhile.
Sun. Mar. 15
Cold, cloudy day. We went up home for dinner & then papa, mama & I went
to Geo. Sheley's funeral in P.M. at the M.E. Church. The Male Quartette sang.
It was very nice. Large crowd out.
Mon. Mar. 16
Dandy nice day. Walt Mc. was here part of the A.M. splitting wood & was
here for dinner. Floyd Blaess was here for dinner too. Mon took me up to B.O.
in P.M. to practice. We took Mrs. Krumm along too. Practiced at Stella Reeds.
Tues. Mar. 17
Quite a nice day. Mon & I went up home in A.M. & got mama & went
to Decorah. Stopped at Price's a minute. Got back to mama's about 1 & had
dinner. Isa & Loyal were there. We stopped at Harold S's a few minutes on
our way home. Mon & the boys took me up town in eve. The M.E. ladies had
a St. Patricks Social at the church. Had a program & lunch. Vera Gates &
I sang "When I Dream of Old Erin I'm Dreaming of You", and "She's
a Daughter of Mother Macrie". The program was good & the lunch too.
Quite a few out. We got home about 11.
Wed. Mar. 18
Not very nice day. Tried to rain off & on all day. Mon & Gust went over
to Walt's to saw wood & I went up home & stayed all day. Got my hair
cut. Snowed in eve. Arthur Morrison & Caroline Cameron were married tonite.
Thurs. Mar. 19
Not such a nice day but not too bad. I washed & ironed. Went over to Howard's
a minute in A.M. Mon helped Walt's finish sawing wood in A.M.
Fri. Mar. 20
Cloudy cool day. Walt & Clifford Mc were here in A.M. & split wood.
They went home right after dinner. We went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Arthur
& I went up home a few minutes. Had a good time at the dance & quite
a crowd. Got home about 2. Dean stayed up home all nite.
Sat. Mar. 21
Another cloudy cool day. Mon, Arthur & I went up town about 10 & got
Dean & Isadore. Went over to Alfred Youngs too look at a bull & from
there we went east to the Locust road & went that way to Decorah. We had
never been that way before. It is surely a nice road. Got down to Price's about
12:30 & Ma got a lunch for us & then we went down town & spent the
rest of the P.M. Warren is home from Ames for over Sunday. Very large crowd
in town. Saw lots of people I knew. We got home about 5.
Sun. Mar. 22
Cloudy day again. We went up home for dinner. Claude's were there too. Got home
about 5:30. Stopped at Gust's a minute on our way home. Snowed some in the nite.
Mon. Mar. 23
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Didn't do much of anything.
Mon was over to Dave's a few minutes in A.M. We had 10 more little pigs this
A.M. (1 sow).
Tues. Mar. 24
Rained almost all day. Didn't do much of anything.
Wed. Mar. 25
Nice day. Rather cool in A.M. but was just lovely in P.M. The roads dried up
like everything. Walt & Clifford were here & split wood in A.M. They
finished up this noon. Geo. Mc was here just after dinner & got the old
sow & little pigs. We went up town a little while in P.M.
Thurs. Mar. 26
Not such a nice day. Quite a bit cooler. Walt Mc was here & helped Mon build
a feed rack today. I washed & ironed. Howard & Pearl were over &
spent the eve. We played cards. We had 15 more little pigs (2 sows).
Fri. Mar. 27
Regular blizzard but not so bad until night. Mon went up to Harry's a little
while in P.M. Dance in B.O. tonite but the weather was too bad we didn't go.
Had 10 more little pigs tonite (1 sow).
Sat. Mar. 28
Regular old time blizzard. Snow everywhere & so much of it. Drifted all
over the place. Didn't do anything more than we had too.
Sun. Mar. 29
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. The boys drove the horses around all A.M. &
shoveled snow in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went over to Howard's in eve awhile
(Arthur went to bed). Walter Jewell & Eugene Dorval were there too. We had
10 more little pigs.
Mon. Mar. 30
Arthur's 14th Birthday. Lovely day. Thawed like everything. Gust came down in
A.M. & helped Mon hitch up Barney & drive him for the first time. He
went just like an old horse. Gust went home after dinner & then we tried
to get to town with the car but we couldn't make it over by Deitels. Happy L.
had been out with a kind of a snow plow but we were the first car through &
we didn't get there. After we got back home Arthur did up what chores he could
& walked up home & stayed all nite. Party at Mart Leonharts for O'Dean
tonite but we didn't go.
Tues. Mar. 31
Leonard W's. 13th Birthday. Lovely day. We went up home about 9 got Arthur &
papa & went to Decorah. Very large crowd in town. Got back home about 5.
The snow plow just came up our road just as we came up the paving.
Wed. Apr. 1
Lovely day. Gust came down & helped drive Barney again today. First cars
on the road today since Friday or any travel for that matter.
Thurs. Apr. 2
Nice day but not as nice as yesterday. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur
drove Barney all day. O'Dean L. was here for dinner & all P.M.
Fri. Apr. 3
Dandy nice day. Dean & I were over to Kate Leonharts all day to our last
Farm Bureau meeting of the year. Quite a few there. Had a good meeting &
a swell feed. We rode over & back with Ole & Gladys. Mon & Arthur
were up home for dinner. We went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Not so many out.
Got home about 2:30. Dean stayed up home all nite.
Sat. Apr. 4
Nice day. Didn't do much of anything. Mon & Arthur drove Barney in P.M.
They went to meet Dean so he had a ride partway home. Walt & Clifford Mc
& Howard W. were here in A.M.
Sun. Apr. 5
Lovely Easter day. We went up home & spent the day. Claude's came after
church & stayed the rest of the day. Walter Jewell was over awhile in eve.
Mon. Apr. 6
Dandy nice day. Didn't do much of anything. We went up town in eve awhile. Went
up home.
Tues. Apr. 7
Regular summer day. Papa & Vernie M. helped Mon haul the hay from the stack
into the barn. Ace Seelye died suddenly this P.M. & Mrs. S. & Alice
didn't have anyone there & they needed help so Mon, papa & Vernie were
up there most of the P.M.

Very warm day. Regular summer time. Too warm to work. I washed in A.M. Papa
came down & helped Mon haul a load of hay in the barn here & then they
took one up to him so they were up there for dinner. Mon & I went to Decorah
awhile in P.M.
Thurs. Apr. 9
Cooler day. Had quite a shower in A.M. but cleared up & was nice in P.M.
Papa didn't come down today. Pearl was over awhile in A.M. & again in P.M.
Fri. Apr. 10
Nice day but so terribly windy. Wind blew so hard form the north. Mon, Dave
& I went to Mr. Seelye's funeral in P.M. I stayed at the house & helped
Alice Price & Min Gates do the dishes, straighten the house & fix a
lunch for the folks when they came back from the church. We got home about 4.
Papa was down here in A.M.
Sat. Apr. 11
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Papa was down here again today. The boys &
I went up & got mama at noon. We burned brush all P.M. Nearly roasted. The
folks went home about 5. We went up town in eve. Went up home awhile. Mon plowed
in A.M.
Sun. Apr. 12
Another terribly windy day. South wind today. We went up to Harry M's. a few
minutes in P.M. Walt Tillapaugh was buried at B.O. this P.M.
Mon. Apr. 13
Lovely day. Papa was here again today. Mon plowed all day. We went over to Howard's
in eve awhile.
Tues. Apr. 14
Nice in A.M. but cooler, clouded up in P.M. Had a little shower at noon &
a very hard rain about supper time. Very hard thunder & lightning. The first
we have had this year. Papa was here until about 11 A.M. Mon plowed all day.
Wed. Apr. 15
Rained very hard about 9 A.M. again. Cleared off in P.M. & was nice. We
went up town early in A.M. Stayed up to mama's until after dinner. Bro't Loyal
home with us. Mon fixed fence in P.M. Millie & Lyle Bently were here in
eve after eggs.
Thurs. Apr. 16
Lovely day. Didn't do much of anything. Tried to find the geeses nest most of
the time. Loyal & I found flowers in the woods. Mon plowed all day.
Fri. Apr. 17
Lovely day. Mon plowed all day. Loyal & I hunted for the geese nests again
today. We went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Took Loyal to his home & then
took him on up to mama's to stay all nite. Dean stayed up home all nite. We
only stayed until supper time at the dance. Got home at 12:30.
Sat. Apr. 18
Nice warm day but pretty windy again. Mon plowed all day. Arthur & I made
a couple of angel food cakes & washed the car & that was about all we
got done. We got the chores done about 7 & went up & got Isadore &
went to Decorah. It rained pretty hard just as we got down there. Stopped a
minute at Price's. Rained hard when we were coming home but it had only rained
a little when we got home. Got home about 11:30. Dean didn't come home today.
Belle had a little calf today.
Sun. Apr. 19
Mama's 60th Birthday. Lovely in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & rained real
hard. Rained off & on the rest of the P.M. We went up home in A.M. &
took our dinner. Claude's, Lester's, Dell's, Aunt Lissa, Aunt Till & Aunt
Maude were there too. We surprised mama. Rained hard in the night.

Cloudy & cold in A.M. Rained off & on all P.M. Sometimes quite hard.
Mon plowed in A.M. Mama called up at noon that Ruth & Francis were up there
so we went up there for dinner & spent the P.M. Isa, Lester & Loyal
were there too. We got home about 5. The Herbie cow had a little calf today.
Tues. Apr. 21
Not very nice day. Cold & rainy. Snowed quite hard for a while in A.M. Mon
took the boys too School & then he went on up & fixed the mail box &
on up to Gust's awhile. Didn't do much of anything all day.
Wed. Apr. 22
Cold windy day. I washed & ironed. Mon plowed all day. Pearl was over a
few minutes in A.M. The Bank at B.O. was robbed this P.M. Two men. Locked Melvin
Sattre, Melvin Underbakke, Luella Young & Mrs. Lovelien in the vault. Rex
Ward, Millard Walton & John McCauley came in while they were there &
they tied them up. They took less than $1000. Were there quite a little while
& in B.O. a couple of hours or so before they robbed the bank. They had
a shower for Arthur & Caroline at the Hall in eve but we didn't go. Mon
was too tired. Froze hard tonite.
Thurs. Apr. 23
Nice day but cold. Mon took me up home early in A.M. to help mama can meat.
Isa & Loyal were there too. Lester worked here today fixing fence. He &
Mon came up to mama's for dinner & then I came home with them. Loyal came
home with us & then went home with his dad. Froze hard tonite again.
Fri. Apr. 24
Deans 11th birthday. Rather nice in A.M., but cold. Clouded up in P.M. &
looked quite rainy. Isadore & Loyal came down with Lester in A.M. when he
came to work. We went to Decorah early in A.M. & she & Loyal & Dean
went along. Arthur helped Lester fix fence in A.M. & then he dragged in
P.M. Dean went to school in P.M. We went up to mama's & got her when we
came from Decorah. We got a half of their hog (152 lbs.) & she & Isa
helped me get it ready to can & salt in P.M. Canned 14 qts. in P.M. Mon
took Mama & Isa & Loyal home about 4:30. We went to B.O. in eve to a
Dance the B.O. Ball Team were giving. Not such a large crowd but they had a
pretty good time. Just the boys & girls from around here played. Henry Foltz
& his two boys helped play too. Dean & Arthur stayed at home alone.
The first time they ever stayed alone so long before. We got home about 2:45.
Sat. Apr. 25
Cold again today. Harlan came down with Lester & stayed all day. I finished
canning my meat today. Had 21 qts. Tried out lard & worked like the dickens
all day. Lester finished here tonite. Snowed a little tonite.
Sun. Apr. 26
Nice day but cold. We were home all day & eve. Dale A. was over awhile in
P.M.
Mon. Apr. 27
Cold windy day again. The sun was bright tho'. Arthur didn't go to school today.
He & I went to B.O. early in A.M. for a few minutes. Went up home a little
while. When we got back home he dragged until dinner time. Mon seeded all day
except just after dinner. Glen Pierce was here & ground 30 sacks of grain
for us. Arthur took me over to Effie's with the eggs to hatch in P.M.
Tues. Apr. 28
Terribly windy day but much warmer. I started to wash but just got the white
clothes washed. Too much wind & dust. Ironed in P.M. Mon seeded & Arthur
dragged.
Wed. Apr. 29
Lovely day. Rather cool in A.M. but warmed up in P.M. & was quite warm.
Arthur dragged in A.M. Mon finished seeding the big piece this A.M. John Blaess
came up in A.M. early & sold us a De Laval Separator. He bro't it up about
10 & set it up. It sure is a dandy. He was here for dinner. Mon plowed in
P.M. A small piece to sow to rape & oats for hogs. We went to B.O. in eve.
Quite a few in town. Got home about 9:30. The boys went barefooted this P.M.
for the first time.

Nice day. Mon finished plowing the hog lot & dragged it. I did a little
of everything & not much of anything.
Fri. May 1
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & rained terribly hard for a little
while & then cleared off. Mon seeded oats & barley in the hog lot &
at noon he went & got Ole's hand seeder & sowed grass seed & rape
after the rain. We went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Quite a crowd out. Had
a good time. Got home about 12:30. Dean stayed up home tonite.
Sat. May 2
Lovely day. Arthur dragged in A.M. & then we went up home for dinner. Went
to Decorah in P.M. Isa went with us. Quite a crowd in town.
Sun. May 3
Dandy nice day. Claude's were here & spent the day. Claude & Mon went
up town awhile in P.M. Mon's folks were up awhile. We went up to Gust's awhile
in eve.

Dandy nice day. Quite windy. Mon plowed all day. I didn't do much of anything.
Was out doors most of the day. Floyd A. was here awhile in A.M.
Tues. May 5
Very nice & warm early in A.M. but the wind changed to the north & started
to blow quite hard about 10:30 & then it clouded up & rained. Had quite
a rain then until nearly 4 P.M. Mon plowed until noon. I went over to Pearl's
a few minutes in A.M. & she was over here awhile after school was out. Pretty
cold in P.M. & eve.
Wed. May 6
Cold cloudy day. Mon disced. I didn't do much of anything.
Thurs. May 7
Another cloudy cold day. Mon disked. We went up town a few minutes at noon.
Went up home a minute. Mrs. Lovelien was walking home when we was on our way
home so we took her home.
Fri. May 8
Not very nice day. Mon disked in A.M. & plowed in P.M. He took me up town
at noon. The Joan of Arc entertained the mothers of the community at a Mothers
Day Program & Lunch at the M.E. Church. Olive & I sang "There's
a Mother Old and Gray Who Needs Me Now". We served angel & devils food
cakes, sandwiches, pickles, coffee & ice cream & gave each mother a
carnation. Quite a few out. I rode home with Lizzie & Kate.
Sat. May 9
Rained quite hard in A.M. & then let up some about 10, but rained most of
the day. Sometimes just a heavy mist. We took the boys to B.O. about 10 &
then went to Decorah went up to Price's had dinner there and then went to Calmar
to Uncle Simon Yager's funeral. Had the service at the house. Quite a few there
& the most beautiful flowers & so many of them. We stayed there until
about 4:30. Had dinner there about 3:30. Stopped at Decorah on our way home
& did our trading. Went to B.O. & got the boys so it was about 7 when
we got home. The roads are pretty muddy.
Sun. May 10
Nicer day. Sun shone some & it rained a few times. We went up to Lester's
& spent the day. Lesters Birthday. Papa, mama, Claudes, Dells, Aunt Lissa,
Earl & Wilma Delay & their girls, Earl Richardson's, Ruth, Francis &
Mr. & Mrs. Ferris were there. We all took our dinners. Had a dandy dinner
& a good time. I went up to Nash's in P.M. with Ruth to get some eggs. We
got home about 6. Loyal came home with us.
Mon. May 11
Rather nice day only cool & windy. Mon plowed all day. I washed & ironed.
We went up town in eve. Took Loyal home. It rained some in eve. Little daughter
born to Florena & Paul Ward this A.M.
Tues. May 12
Nice day. Much warmer. Mon plowed. I washed some in A.M. Scrubbed & did
a little of everything in P.M. We went over to Lovelein's in eve awhile.
Wed. May 13
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon dragged the garden in A.M. & then plowed
the rest of the day. I made garden.
Thurs. May 14
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed. We went up home at noon & got some potatoes
to plant. Stopped at Deitels on our way back & got some strawberry plants.
Mon & I set them out after supper while the boys did most of the milking.
We set out about 150 plants.
Fri. May 15
Lovely day only so windy. Mighty warm. Mon finished plowing & dragged some
in P.M. The boys & I went up home in eve & got our seed corn that was
up there. Big dance in town but Mon was too tired so we didn't go. Looked like
a pretty big crowd in town.
Sat. May 16
Had a nice little shower in A.M. early but didn't amount to much. Cleared off
& was a nice day but quite a bit cooler. Arthur dragged & Mon started
planting corn just before dinner. We went up & got Isa in eve & went
to Decorah. Stopped at Price's a few minutes on our way down. Very large crowd
in town. Hard to get waited on in the stores. Was with Ruth P. all eve. Got
home about 12. Papa's birthday.
Sun. May 17
Cloudy & cool most of the day. We went down to Claude's. Papa, mama &
Lester's were there too. Had a good time. Got home about 5. Mon's father, mother
& Uncle Will Y. came about 5:30 & were here for supper. They stayed
until about 8:30. Rained quite hard in the night.
Mon. May 18
Rained off & on all day. Mon planted corn until a little after 11 &
then it rained so hard he came in & then didn't go out until about 3:30.
He finished planting that piece all except around the outside. We shelled seed
corn while he was in the house.
Tues. May 19
Nice day but cold. Mon finished around the outside of the cornfield & then
went up to Gust's & got the manure spreader. He cleaned the brooder house
before dinner. After dinner we planted potatoes & then I put in the sweet
corn & popcorn & Mon took the banking away from the house. Little daughter
born to Stanley & Catherine today.
Wed. May 20
Last day of school. Not very nice day. Cold as the dickens. Rained, hailed &
snowed in A.M. Mon & I went up to the school house for dinner. Had a nice
program & a dandy dinner. Grace gave ice cream besides all the other dinner.
Quite a few there. We got home about 2 & then Mon & the boys went over
to Krumm's & got his quack grass digger & Arthur & Mon took turns
using that the rest of the P.M. Ruth P. & Mr. Ferris were here awhile in
eve.
Thurs. May 21
Not very nice day. Cloudy & cold & windy. I washed & ironed &
got the brooder stove going. Mon & Arthur took turns using the quack grass
digger & dragging. We went up town awhile in eve. Went up home. Papa is
quite sick. Olive & the kids were there too.
Fri. May 22
Nicer day. The sun shone in P.M. & it was some warmer. Arthur took me over
to Effie's at noon & got the little chickens. Got 108 out of 144 eggs. Arthur
took me over to Hilda E's. about 1:30 & I went to Club with her. Club met
with Katherine Hegtvedt. Quite a crowd out. I walked home from the four corners.
Free dance for the B.O. Dance Club at B.O. this eve but Mon was too tired to
go. Froze hard tonite.
Sat. May 23
Nice day. Much warmer. Mon & Arthur used the digger & drag all day.
We went up & got Isa in eve & went to Decorah. Stopped at Price's on
our way down. Large crowd in town again. Got home about 12. Dean stayed up home
all nite.
Sun. May 24
Very warm day. Mon & Arthur went up to Harry's early in A.M. to fix the
windmill. The boys came home with them & Arthur changed his clothes &
went back up there & spent the day. We went up & got papa & mama,
Isa & the kids & took them to Aunt Lissa's. Aunt Eunice, Ella &
the boys are there. Claude's, Dell's, Archie Ward's, Aunt Till, Aunt Maude &
Connie & Chauncey were there. Had a dandy dinner. We got home about 6. Loyal
came home with us. We went over to Floyd A's. in eve. Bernice & Ray were
there too. Got home about 10.
Mon. May 25
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon & Arthur took turns working in the field.
We shelled some seed corn in P.M.
Tues. May 26
Fine day. Mighty warm & windy. Mon & Arthur took turns working in the
field. Papa, mama, Isa & Harlan were here & spent the day. Gust &
Kate were down in eve.
Wed. May 27
Dandy nice day. Only mighty warm & windy. I went to Decorah about 9:30 with
Lizzie, Audry, Bernice, Kate & Myrtle M. went too. Achievement Day of the
Farm Bureau Ladies at the M.E. Church parlors at Decorah. Very large crowd there.
Fine program & dinner. We surely had a wonderful day. Got home about 5:30.
Mon & the boys went up to mama's for dinner.
Thurs. May 28
Had a little shower early in A.M but cleared up & was a quite nice day.
Papa bro't Isa & Harlan down about 9 A.M. & then he went back home.
She helped me all day. We washed, ironed, scrubbed & did a lot of things.
Arthur & Dean took them home about 5. She took Loyal home with her. It rained
quite hard in the nite. Surely did a lot of good.
Fri. May 29
Lovely day. Mon planted corn until about 11 & the planter quit working &
he went up after Marion in P.M. to help them with the planter. Got it to working
about 4 P.M. & finished up planting all but rolling up the wire. Marion
was here for supper & went up town with us in eve. We went to the dance.
Not such a large crowd out but we had a good time. Got home about 2:30. Dean
stayed up home all nite.
Sat. May 30
Nice day but cooler. Mon & Arthur finished up in the cornfield in A.M. &
then went over in Dell M's. grub patch & watched them break until noon.
We went over to Floyd's after dinner awhile. Stopped at Deitel's on our way
home & got some tomato plants. Gladys & Floyd came just after we got
home to get some eggs to set. We started setting out plants & Dad &
Ma & Uncle Will came about 4. Dad bro't some more tomato plants so the men
folks set them out & I came to the house. The folks stayed for supper. They
bro't some strawberries along and we had a short cake. It was good. The folks
went home about 7 & then we got ready and went to Decorah. Went up &
got Dean & Isa. Very large crowd in town. We got home about 12.
Sun. May 31
Dandy nice day. Papa & mama came down before breakfast & as soon as
we got the work done the boys & I went with them down to Bluffton fishing.
Took our lunch along & fished up & down the river. Had a good time.
Got home about 4:30. Mon went to B.O. to the ball game. He didn't get home until
about 6. Chas. Murdock & Chas. Burgess went off the grade down by the Upper
Dam. They took Chas. B. to the Hospital at Decorah but Chas. M. wasn't hurt
so badly so he came home.
Mon. June 1
Dandy nice day. Mon & the boys went up to Gust's & over to Floyd's in
A.M. We went up home for dinner & then went to Decorah in P.M. Mama went
too. She & I got our hair cut. We got home about 5:30. They took Chas. B.
to Rochester this P.M. in the ambulance. His neck is hurt quite badly.
Tues. June 2
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon & Arthur got the corn plow around ready
to go in A.M. & did some other odd jobs. They took Gust's wagon home in
P.M. & after they got back Mon plowed corn. Dean & I hoed the garden
in P.M. John Blaess was here in P.M.
Wed. June 3
Mighty hot day. Arthur took me up home in A.M. to wash. He came down & got
Mon & brot him up there for dinner. We came home about 1:30. Mon plowed
corn all day. We went up home in the eve awhile. Pretty bad looking storm came
up but we didn't get any of it.
Thurs. June 4
Dandy nice day. The boys went over & got Marion early in A.M. to come &
help a few days. Mon plowed corn until Marion came & then Arthur plowed
& Mon & Marion went to fixing fence.
Fri. June 5
Nice most of the day but cooler. It sprinkled a little in eve. The men fixed
fence all day. O'Dean L. was here for dinner & then Dean went home with
him & spent the P.M. Arthur took me to Club at Maude J's. in P.M. We went
up town first & Fannye rode down with us. Arthur came after me about 5.
Harold Reed hauled a cow & pig to Prosper for us in A.M.
Sat. June 6
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & started to rain between three &
four. Kept it up off & on the rest of P.M. & eve. The men fixed fence
& did other odd jobs. We went to Decorah in eve. Marion stayed at B.O. Dean
stayed up to mama's all nite. Isa went to Decorah with us. Quite a few in town.
Rained all the time we were down there and all the way home. It rained pretty
hard on the way home & after we got home. Had to put our chains on at B.O.
to come home & it was sure muddy. Got home about 12.
Sun. June 7
Nice bright day but windy & cold. Dave was over awhile in A.M. We went up
home for dinner. Claude's came in P.M. The men folks went to Kendalville in
P.M. to a ball game. We all stayed up home for supper. Christ M. was here awhile
in eve.
Mon. June 8
Nice day. A little warmer. Mon plowed corn. The boys put out some poisoned corn
for the gophers after dinner & then we went over to McCauleys & got
some corn cracker for the chickens.
Tues. June 9
Rather cloudy day in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Did a little
of everything. Hoed some in P.M. Dean went over to Deitel's in P.M. awhile.
We went over to Howard's awhile in eve.
Wed. June 10
Quite a nice day. Got rather windy in P.M. Pearl was over awhile in .M. The
boys & I did part of the washing in A.M. Ironed in P.M. Papa & mama
were down for supper. Mon plowed corn.
Thurs. June 11
Nice in A.M. Pretty windy though. Had a good hard rain just after dinner. Soaked
things up good. Mon plowed corn in A.M. We went up home after the rain. Stopped
at Gust's a few minutes on our way home. Got 3 little goslings at Annie's that
she had hatched for me.
Fri. June 12
Nice day. Papa was here all day helping Mon fix fence. Mon & the boys went
up to Gust's early in A.M. & got the manure spreader & Arthur hauled
manure all day. We went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Very large crowd out. Had
a good time. Went over to the restaurant for supper. Dean stayed up home all
nite. Loyal was here all day. We got home from the dance about 2:30.
Sat. June 13
Dandy nice day. Papa came down & helped fix fence again today. Harlan came
along with him. Arthur hauled manure. We went to B.O. & got Isa in eve &
went to Decorah. Very large crowd in town. Got home about 12. Dean stayed up
home all nite.
Sun. June 14
Dandy nice day. Mon & Arthur took the car up town in A.M. & got it fixed
then we went up to Isa's for dinner. Mon, Lester & the boys went down town
in P.M. to the ball game & Isa & I went over to mamas.
Mon. June 15
Very nice in A.M. & until about 4 P.M. It rained quite hard then for a little
while. Papa was here until just before the rain. Mon plowed corn all day. We
went up town a few minutes in eve. Stopped at Harrys on our way up.
Tues. June 16
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed corn. We went over to Loveliens a few minutes in
eve.
Wed. June 17
Mighty warm windy day. I washed in A.M. & the boys & I went down to
Olive's awhile in P.M. Mon plowed corn.
Thurs. June 18
Mighty warm day. Mon plowed corn. I did a little of everything.
Fri. June 19
Another hot day. Mon plowed corn until noon & then we went to the Joan of
Arc Picnic at Arthur Smith's Spring. Had a good big crowd & a dandy dinner.
Big ball game in P.M. & then all the ice cream we could eat as usual. Got
home about 6. Rained terribly hard in the night about 12.
Sat. June 20
Nice day. Rather muddy. Arthur walked up home in A.M. & then we went up
there for dinner. He came home with us in P.M. We went up after Isa in eve &
went to Decorah. Large crowd in town. Arthur stayed up home all nite. We got
home about 12:30.
Sun. June 21
Dandy nice day. Vernie M. & Gust R. were here in A.M. We went down to Aunt
Lissa's awhile in P.M. Aunt Eunice, Uncle Albert & the boys & Ruth &
her husband were there. Had supper there. Got home a little after 6.
Mon. June 22
Rained very hard early in A.M. & then off & on until almost noon it
cleared up & was nice the rest of the day only pretty warm. Mon & Arthur
hauled manure & fixed screen door in P.M. Walter Jewell & Howard were
here awhile in eve.
Tues. June 23
Dandy nice day only mighty warm. We went to Decorah about 9 A.M. Stopped at
Mon's folks a few minutes. Got back up to mama's about noon & stayed there
for dinner & until about 3 P.M.
Wed. June 24
Mighty hot day. I washed. Mon & the boys hoed potatoes in A.M. & then
Mon plowed corn in P.M. Lucile (Emmons) Mason & Gerthrude E. were here a
little while in P.M.
Thurs. June 25
Terribly hot day. Did a little of everything in A.M. Arthur went up & got
mama & Isa & the boys about noon & then we took them home about
5. Stopped at Dietel's a minute on our way up town & saw the cherry trees.
Had lots of them to eat too. Mon plowed corn all day.
Fri. June 26
Another scorcher of a day. Mon plowed corn. We didn't go to the dance tonite.
Too hot. Jack Whalen & his hired man were down & spent the eve. Frank
Fredenburg died this A.M.
Sat. June 27
Very hot day. Mon plowed corn all day. We went up to Gust's a minute at noon.
Went to B.O. in eve & got Isa & then went to Decorah. Big crowd in town.
Got home about 12:30. Arthur stayed up to mama's all nite.
Sun. June 28
Warmest day we have had. Papa, mama, Claudes, Lesters, Dell, Mettie, Aunt Lissa,
Aunt Eunice & the boys, Kate & Gust, Floyd & Gladys & the kids
& Ed Arnold were here for picnic dinner & then we picked gooseberries
in P.M. Claude, Dell & Mon went to B.O. in P.M. to the ball game. We had
a good time but it was so hot we didn't pick berries very long. Had a swell
dinner. Frank Fredenburg was buried this P.M.
Mon. June 29
Regular scorcher of a day. Mon plowed corn. His father & mother were up
for supper. Isa, Lester & the kids were here a few minutes in eve.
Tues. June 30
Hot day. Mon took me up home in A.M. to wash & then he & Arthur came
back home & plowed corn & pulled weeds out of the potatoes. They came
back up to mama's for dinner & stayed there the rest of the P.M. Olive &
the kids were there awhile. Marie is staying with mama this week. Had a big
water fight in P.M. Isa & her boys were there. Most everyone got pretty
well soaked. Had lots of fun out of it anyway.
Wed. July 1
Pretty hot in A.M. but clouded up about noon & sprinkled off & on all
P.M. until about 6 it just poured down. Got much cooler in P.M. Fine to sleep
tonite. Mon plowed corn until noon.
Thurs. July 2
Dandy nice day. Mon & the boys went up to Gust's in A.M. & then they
went up home just about noon. Arthur came back about 1 after me & Mon rode

a dandy lunch. Got home about 5. Lester's were here for supper & Harlan
stayed all nite. Walter Jewell was over awhile in eve.
Fri. July 3
Nice day but cooler. Arthur, Dean & I went up & got Isa in A.M. &
we went to Decorah. Stopped at Price's a minute on our way down town. Got back
home here about 1. Annie, Bess & the boys were down in P.M. & picked
gooseberries. I helped them pick. Mon plowed corn all day. We went over to Mart
L's. in eve to a dance in the barn. Had a good sized crowd & a good time.
Got home about 2.
Sat. July 4
Nice day only a little cool. We went over to Floyd A's. to a picnic. Just the
neighbors & a few others. Mon's folks were up. Had a dandy dinner &
all the ice cream we could eat. About 55 there. It started to sprinkle in eve
& then it rained quite hard in the night.
Sun. July 5
Nice day only cool. We went down to Mettie's for a picnic celebrating Dell's
& Mettie's birthdays. Papa, mama, Claudes, Lesters, Aunt Lissa, Aunt Eunice
& the boys, Aunt Till, Lizzie, Maxine, Kate, O'Dean & Mr. & Mrs.
Olson. Had a dandy dinner & a good time. Got home about 6. Annie, Nellie,
Henry & the kids came down just before we went away, to pick gooseberries.
Mon. July 6
Nice cool day. Mon went to Prosper in A.M. early & the boys & I went
along. Dean & I stopped at mama's. Mama, Isa & the boys came home with
us & spent the day picking gooseberries. We took them home about 5. Lizzie
was over & picked in P.M. too. Marion came here at supper time & stayed
all nite.
Tues. July 7
Nice day. Man & Marion worked at the hay loader about all day. Arthur plowed
corn in P.M.
Wed. July 8
Nice day. Arthur plowed corn all but a little while in P.M. We had a little
shower. Mon & Marion finished the hay loader. We took Dean to B.O. in eve
& then took Marion over to Florence's to change his clothes & then we
went to a barn dance at Fred Walter's. Not many out and what were there didn't
care about dancing so the music went home & then some of them played the
mouth organ & violin & we danced a few times. Got home about 12:30.
Thurs. July 9
Dandy nice day. Marion started for home this A.M. We went to B.O. & got
Isa & went to Decorah. Stayed at mama's for dinner & went to town after
dinner.
Fri. July 10
Nice day. Papa came down early in A.M. & then Dean & I went back with
him. Took my washing up home to do. We sold 4 steers to Lloyd K. & Harold
R. hauled them this A.M. Mon & Arthur came up to mama's for dinner &
then we came home right after dinner. I ironed in P.M. Went to B.O. in eve to
the dance. Quite a crowd out & had a good time. Got home about 2:30. Arthur
stayed up home all nite.
Sat. July 11
Nice day. Papa bro't Arthur home this morning early. Arthur, Dean & I went
to Decorah about 10 & got back about noon. Mon mowed in P.M. It rained quite
hard in the night.
Sun. July 12
Nice day. Got quite warm in P.M. Lesters, Dells, Aunt Lissa, Aunt Eunice &
the boys were here all day. Had a picnic dinner & then picked gooseberries
in P.M. Mon, Arthur, Dell & Lester went to B.O. in P.M. to the ball game.
We drove down to Bluffton in eve a few minutes. Quite a crowd in the burg.
Mon. July 13
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Arthur mowed most of the day. Mon helped Gust shock
part of the P.M. I did a little of everything. Mrs. Tom Murdock & Rodney
were up in P.M. & picked gooseberries. We went to B.O. a few minutes in
eve.
Tues. July 14
Very warm day. Papa, mama, Isa & the boys were here all day. Picked gooseberries
again today. Pretty warm for it too. Pearl was over awhile in P.M. Mon &
Arthur raked up hay most of the day. They put one load in the barn late in P.M.
Wed. July 15
Another scorcher of a day. Papa came down & helped hay. He got pretty sick
in P.M. Got too warm. He was sun sick for a while. The boys & I took him
home about 6.
Thurs. July 16
Another hot day. Mon took me up home early in A.M. to wash & then he came
back home & they got up two loads of hay that was down. They came up home
for dinner & we spent most of the P.M. up town. Too hot to work. We came
home about 4 & then Mon & the boys went down to Fred Lange's to help
fix their binder. They didn't get home from there until after 6. Papa is better
today but not very good.
Fri. July 17
Hot day again. Mon & the boys went to B.O. in A.M. We went out in the field
after dinner too see about the barley & then went up to Whalens too see
about his cutting it. He came down about 3 & started cutting. We went over
to Mart L's. in eve to the barn dance. Quite a crowd & a good time. "Iowa
Corn Huskers" played. Harry Brandt's orchestra. We got home about 2.
Sat. July 18
Pretty hot day. Papa helped shock all day. Mr. Whalen finished cutting the barley
today. Mon & Dean went to Canton in A.M. & Harlan came home with them.
He went home with papa when he went. We went to Decorah in eve. Stopped at Price's
on our way down. Stanley, Catherine & the baby were there. Very large crowd
in town. Got home about 12.
Sun. July 19
Very hot in A.M. Clouded up about noon & we sure got a soaker about 1:30.
Rained & hailed mighty hard for a while. Pretty good sized hail stones too.
We were up home for dinner. Claudes were there too. It hailed harder or did
more damage up there than it did here. Raymond Deitel got kicked by a horse
about 6 & we went over there & stayed until about 7. They had Dr. Fritchen
out but he didn't think he was hurt so very bad.
Mon. July 20
Nice day. Mr. Whalen finished cutting our grain about 4 P.M. Papa was here &
shocked all day. Not so warm today.
Tues. July 21
Nice day. They finished shocking in A.M. (Papa & Mon) & Arthur mowed
hay. They put up hay in P.M. We went up town awhile in eve.
Wed. July 22
Nice day. Papa & mama were down all day. The men put up hay.
Thurs. July 23
Nice day. Arthur took me up home early in A.M. to wash. Mon went to Loveliens
threshing. Papa & the boys fixed fence. They came up to mama's for dinner.

Nice day. Got pretty warm in P.M. Papa & mama were down again today. Papa
& the boys hauled manure & junk. Mon went to Loveliens threshing in
A.M. They finished there about 10 & then went to Krumms. We went up town
a little while in eve. Didn't go to the dance.
Sat. July 25
Pretty hot day. Papa worked here again today. Mon went to Krumms this A.M. They
finished there & threshed out Deitel's before dinner & then threshed
out Vernie's in P.M. Arthur went up & got Mama & Isa & the boys
about 9:30. Arthur, Isa & I went to Decorah & mama stayed here &
got dinner. We got back about 12:30. We took mama, Isa & the boys home about
3:30. Gust was here a minute when he went dome from threshing. We went over
to Mart's in eve to the dance. Quite a big crowd out. Had a pretty good time.
Got home about 2:15.
Sun. July 26
Mighty hot day. We went down to Claude's for dinner & then we all went up
to Yucatan to a ball game. B.O. played. Quite a few girls from B.O. there. Some
ball game. 23-67. Some hills getting there. Had a nice ride any way & saw
country we had never seen before. Stopped at mama's on our way home & they
were eating supper so we ate too. Got home about 7. Dean got hit on the hip
with a foul ball.
Mon. July 27
Warm day. Mon threshed at Gilbert's in A.M. & Christ's in P.M. Christ was
here for supper. Arthur & I were up town a little while in P.M. The boys
went up to Christ's & watched them thresh after we got home.
Tues. July 28
Nice day. Some cooler. The boys & I went up home early in A.M. to wash.
Isa & the boys were down to mama's for dinner. We came home about 2. Mon
finished at Christ's & went to Whalen's threshing today.
Wed. July 29
Nice day. Quite decent. We went up to Gust's early in A.M. to thresh. Effie,
Alice S. & Gladys were there too. Got thro' at Gust's at noon & then
we all, but Effie, went down to Gladys' & helped there. We got home about
7. Looked pretty rainy but we didn't get any.
Thurs. July 30
Nice warm day. Mon threshed at Ole's in A.M. & at Harry's in P.M. Mon's
father & mother were up for supper. We went up town a minute in eve after
they went home.
Fri. July 31
Pretty hot day. Mon threshed at Harry's. I went to Club at Myrtle M's. in P.M.
with Elsie. Gladys & Fern were along too. It rained quite hard in the night.
Sat. Aug. 1
Nice day. Some cooler. We went to B.O. about noon & then Arthur, Dean, Isa
& I went to Decorah. Mon stayed at B.O. We went over to Mart's in eve to
the dance. Quite a crowd but the music didn't show up. (The Iowa Corn Huskers).
Joe Olson & Clarence Carlson did most of the playing. Had a pretty good
time. Got home about 1. It rained quite hard while we were over to Mart's.
Sun. Aug. 2
Nice cool day. We went down to Aunt Lissa's for dinner. Picnic dinner &
she furnished black berries. Had a dandy dinner & a good time. I weighed
109 lbs. Claudes, Lesters, Papa, Mama, Dells & Aunt Till were there. Gust
& Kate were down & spent the eve.
Mon. Aug. 3
Pretty warm day. Mon went to Gilbertsons threshing in A.M. & then he didn't
feel good so he got Olaf L. to thresh in his place in P.M. The boys & I
went up to mama's in A.M. to wash. Mama, Isa & the boys came home with us
in P.M. to help get ready for threshers. Mon & I went to Decorah in P.M.
& got our meat for threshers. 14 lbs. for $1.40. We also got a bu. of peaches
for $1.50. Dandy ones too. Arthur & Dean took mama & Isa home about
4:30. We went over to Bennie G's. after supper after the team. Arthur drove
them home. The threshing machine came here about 9. Geo. Gates.
Tues. Aug. 4
Nice hot day. We threshed in A.M. The boys went up & got mama & Isa
early in A.M. Gladys & Kate came too so we had lots of help. We got 475
bu. We took mama & Isa home about 2 P.M. & I stopped at Floyds &
helped Gladys get supper for threshers. Myrtle & Audry were there too. We
went up town a minute in eve.
Wed. Aug. 5
Nice warm day again. I went over to Floyd's early in A.M. to help Gladys with
her threshers. Had an early dinner & we got home about 11:30. Went up home
in P.M. & helped mama & Isa a little with their peaches. They got 61
qts. out of 2 bu. Little Calvin Johnson was killed today about noon. His grandfather
Johnson's car backed down hill & ran over his neck & head killing him
instantly. It was surely a terrible accident. No one to blame.
Thurs. Aug. 6
Nice hot day again. Arthur went up & got mama & Isa about 7 A.M. &
they came down & helped me can my peaches. I only got 23 qts. We ate too
many. They sure were nice. Mon went threshing at Dave's in P.M. The boys &
I took mama home about 2.
Fri. Aug. 7
Pretty warm day only rather cloudy. Mon threshed at Dave's in A.M. The boys
& I went over to Olives about 9:30 & got her & the kids & went
to B.O. Calvin Johnson was buried this A.M. The funeral was at 11 A.M. at the
Lutheran Church. Rev. Jensen preached the sermon. Very large crowd out. Not
nearly enough room in the church for them all. About the saddest funeral I was
ever at. Got to speak to Lena Johnson at the cemetry. Didn't get to speak to
Walter though. We were all up to Isa's for dinner then we took Olive & the
kids home & mama rode down to Dell's with us. We got home about 2 &
Mon went over to Raymond Hennings awhile in P.M. Joe & Hattie & Dorothy
Olson were here awhile in P.M. I bought a watermelon of Joe & he got a pig
of us. Rained in the night.
Sat. Aug. 8
Rained off & on all day & quite hard in P.M. We went up to B.O. about
noon. Had dinner at Isa's & after dinner went to Decorah. Stopped at Mon's
folks awhile. Large crowd in town but we didn't stay long. Got home about 4.
Rained pretty hard while we were coming home. Cleared off after we got home
& was a dandy evening only much cooler. We went over to Mart's in eve to
the dance. Big crowd & a big time. Outside as well as in. We got home about
2.

Quite a cool day. Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & we had a little
shower. Cleared off after that & was nice. Mon & the boys were up to
Ole's a few minutes in A.M. Howard, Pearl & Walter were here in eve.

Nice day. A little warmer. Mon & Arthur hauled manure all day.

Nice day. We went down to Claude's about 8:30 to help with threshing. Mamma
& Mettie were there too. Some excitement in A.M. They thought Dell had a
rattlesnake on his load, but they didn't find it. Mon went up on Duprey's after
dinner & helped Vernie M. thresh some he had there. Aunt Lissa was over
to Olive's in P.M. We got home about 5.

Dandy nice day. Went up home early in A.M. to wash. Mama, Isa & I all washed
in A.M. Helped mama can corn in P.M. Got home about 5.

Nice warm day. I ironed in A.M. We went to Decorah in P.M. Isa, Lester &
the boys were down in the woods in P.M. & picked up dry wood.
Sat. Aug. 15
Nice until late in P.M. it clouded up & looked quite rainy but it only sprinkled.
Mon threshed at Chas. Wernett's in A.M. We went to B.O. about 5 & got back
about 6. The Joan of Arc had an Ice Cream Social for the benefit of the cemetry
on the Lutheran parsonage lawn. I didn't stay up & help. Went over to Mart's
in eve to the dance. Large crowd. Mon & Billie Lang took up the money. Got
home about 2:30.
Sun. Aug. 16
Nice day. We were home alone all day until about 4:30. We went up to Isa's awhile
. Lena & Clifford were there & we stayed for supper. Papa & mama
were at Lanesboro & when they got home we went down there a minute. Got
home about 7.
Mon. Aug. 17
Pretty warm day. Did a little of everything in A.M. Canned 10 qts. of dill pickles.
Had a dandy nice shower at noon & another about 7 P.M. Mon & I went
out to fix fence in P.M. & then Mr. Dietel called for us to come over there
so Arthur came out after us & took us over. Mrs. Deitel had fallen down
& hurt her arm. Dr. Fritchen came out & he said it was a bad sprain.
It hurt her quite bad. Mon's father & mother came up while we were over
there so he & the boys came home & then he came back after me about
6. The folks went home just before the rain. Elanor Wilbur & Lloyd Dinger
were married today. They had a shower for them at Bluffton in eve, but we were
so late with our chores we didn't go.
Tues. Aug. 18
Hot day again. Tried to rain again this noon but it didn't rain much. Gust was
here early in A.M. also Richard Blaess & Sam Richards. Mon went up to Gusts
shortly after breakfast to fix his windmill & the boys & I went along.
Got home about 11 & then went over to Deitels. Helped Mrs. D. a little &
also got some apples to can. Canned 4 qts. in P.M. Went to Bluffton a few minutes
in P.M. & B.O. in eve.
Wed. Aug. 19
Dandy nice day. Papa & mama were here all day. Papa, Mon & the boys
were fixing fence. Mama & I canned apples. I got 16 qts. of apples &
1 qt. of elderberries. Howard was over awhile in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 20
Nice day. I went up home early in A.M. & washed. Papa was here all day helping
with the fence. They all came up home for dinner & then I came home with
them right after dinner. I ironed in P.M. Pearl was over awhile in P.M. Arthur
went home with papa tonite.
Fri. Aug. 21
Dandy nice day. Papa was here again today. Geo., Vera, Frank & Junior G.
were here for dinner. They had gotten stuck with the threshing rig on Lange's
hill & Geo. had to get Gilbert to pull him out & Vera & Junior came
up here & stayed. They got up here just at noon so they stayed for dinner.
Sat. Aug. 22
Pretty warm day. Papa was here again today. I scrubbed & cleaned up the
house some in A.M. & then Arthur, Dean & I went to Decorah in P.M. Lester
rode up from Decorah with us. We took him on up home & then stopped a minute
at mama's. Harlan came home with us & then went back home with papa. Dean
went up home & stayed all nite. We went over to Mart's to the dance in eve.
Large crowd out. Got home about 2:30. Some little scraps.

Dandy nice day. We went up home & spent the day. Claude's were up to Lester's.
The men went to the ball game in P.M. (at B.O.). Isa, Olive & the kids came
down to mama's in P.M. Jack Whalen's were here a few minutes after supper.

Nice day. Did a little of everything. Papa was here today & finished up
the fence. We went up to Gust's awhile in eve. Addie Feltis & Torgie Thorson
were married today.

Nice day. We were up to Harry M's. most of A.M. Did a little of everything in
P.M. Olive & the boys were here & spent the eve. (Marie is in B.O.)
Claude went to Bluffton.

Dandy nice day. We went down to Claude's early in A.M. I took my washing down
there & did it with the Maytag. Washed my blankets too. We had a dandy good
time. Claude & Mon overhauled the Maytag after we got thro' working. We
got home about 4:30. Went up town awhile in eve. Went up home too.
Thurs. Aug. 27
Rather cloudy in A.M. Rained hard in P.M. We went up to Gust's a few minutes
in A.M. We gathered some plums in A.M. & I canned 15 ½ qts. in P.M.
We were over to Howard's in eve. Got quite cool in eve.
Fri. Aug. 28
Nice day but pretty cool. Ole took Gladys & I to Club at Ethel Masters'
in P.M. Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy lunch. Mon & the boys came after
us. Fern rode home with us too.
Sat. Aug. 29
Nice day. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah in A.M. Arthur stayed at home. We
got back to mama's about noon & had dinner there. Got home about 2. Dale
& Arland were here with Arthur. We all went out in the field after grapes
in P.M. Got quite a few. Went over to Mart's to the dance in eve. Quite a crowd
again. We came home before the dance broke up. Got home about 2.

Nice day. We went up home for dinner & then Mon, papa & the boys went
down town to the Ball Game. Cresco & B.O. We were up home for supper too.
Went over to Mart's & got our lantern after we got home.
Mon. Aug. 31
Nice day until just suppertime. We sure got a soaker of a rain. Just poured.
Quite hard thunder & lightning. Rained hard for over an hour. Mon &
the boys went over & got Marion just after noon & when they got back
they started fixing the corn binder.

Dandy nice day. The men worked at the binder all day. Went to Prosper after
a board early in A.M.

Nice most of the day. Sprinkled a little in A.M. but was nice the rest of the
day. The men worked at the binder all day. Except a little while in P.M. they
were up fixing Gust's binder. Ray McC. & Raymond D. were here in A.M. awhile.

Dandy nice day. Mon & the boys went to B.O. early in A.M. They worked at
the binder the rest of the day. The boys went up to Morgan's awhile in P.M.
It rained hard in eve.

Dandy nice day. They worked at the binder all day. The boys took the washing
up home early in A.M. & Harlan & Loyal came back & spent the day
here. They sure had a big time. Dad & Mother P. & Warren were up for
supper. We took Harlan & Loyal home in eve & got our clean clothes.

Nice warm day. They worked at the binder in A.M. Ole came down just before dinner
& he was up there until about 4:30. We made grape wine in P.M. Took Marion
up to B.O. in eve. Dean went up home & stayed. We went to Mart's to the
dance. Large crowd out. We got home about 2:30.

Dandy nice day. Ole & Gladys were here a few minutes in A.M. We went to
Bluffton in A.M. & did some trading. Went up & got the folks & Dean
after dinner & went over to Lena's awhile. Came back to mama's & stayed
for supper. Got home about 6. Had a nice ride.
Mon. Sept. 7
Pretty warm day. First day of school. Anna Whalen is teacher. Mon started cutting
corn for Jack Whalen today. So I was alone all day.
Tues. Sept. 8
Another hot day. Mon cut corn for Jack again today. Papa & mama came down
about 3 P.M. & stayed for supper. We were out in the woods & got elderberries
& hazel nuts. We were up town a minute in eve.
Wed. Sept. 9
Warm again today. It looked pretty rainy for awhile but it only sprinkled a
little. Arthur took me up home early in A.M. to wash & then he came up after
me after school. Mon cut corn at Jack's.
Thurs. Sept. 10
Hot day. Mon cut corn for Jack.
Fri. Sept. 11
Hot windy day. Mon finished cutting corn this P.M. for Jack. Ole came down after
me at noon & then he took Gladys, Alice & I over to Elsie's & we
went to Club at Minnie Van Vleits with Elsie. Minnie entertained the Club. Quite
a crowd. We sure had a swell lunch and a fine time. Arthur & Dean came over
to Elsie's after us girls.
Sat. Sept. 12
Pretty hot day. We picked a little jag of corn in A.M. & did quite a few
things. Went up home & got Isa in P.M. & went to Decorah. Stopped at
Mons folks awhile. Large crowd in town. Arthur stayed at mama's until we got
back. Dean got his hair cut. We went over & got Olaf & Kate in eve &
then we all went to Marts to the Dance. Large crowd there. Had a good time &
fine music. Frank O'Brien & his Harmonizers. There was an accident up at
the corner by Howard's when we were coming home. A car went into the ditch &
tipped over but they had it straightened up when we came along but the boys
went up there to see if they could help any so we didn't get to bed until about
3.

Rained off & on all day but yet it didn't rain much. Just settled the dust.
We went up home for dinner. Claudes were there too. The men went down town in
P.M. to a Ball game. Isa & the boys were down to mama's in P.M. We got home
about 6. Whalen's & Gust & Kate were down & spent the eve. We got
to bed about 10.
Mon. Sept. 14
Pretty warm day. Lester came down to help Mon. They fixed the binder & picked
a jag of corn in A.M. & started cutting corn in P.M. It started to rain
about 4:30 and it sure rained for awhile. Lester went home then. It turned cold
after the rain.
Tues. Sept. 15
Nice in A.M. but started to rain about 4 & it sure rained part of the time.
Mon cut corn until it rained & Lester shocked.
Wed. Sept. 16
Very nice day until eve. It rained some then. Lester, Harlan & Loyal came
down about 11 (No school in B.O. on account of the Fair). Mon didn't cut corn
until P.M. because it was so wet. We were out in the woods in A.M. & gathered
some butternuts.
Thurs. Sept. 17
Nice day. Lester was here until about 4:30. He run out of work. Mon finished
the south piece about 2 & so he didn't get enough cut on the north piece
to keep Lester going. We went up town in eve. I went up to mama's.
Fri. Sept. 18
Sprinkled off & on all day. The men worked at the corn all day. Loyal came
down with Lester & spent the day. We had a good time.
Sat. Sept. 19
Rained hard all A.M. Quit about 12:30. Was cloudy the rest of the P.M. but it
didn't rain. Mon was over to Howard's awhile in A.M. We went to B.O. about 1:30
& got Isa & went to Decorah. Dean & Arthur stayed at mama's while
we were gone. After we got back up home Arthur was fooling with the car &
broke it so Rex had to bring us home. Arthur stayed up home all nite. Rained
hard about 9 & then off & on all nite. Didn't go to Mart's to the dance.
Sun. Sept. 20
Our 15th Wedding Anniversary. Dandy nice day. Rained most of the nite though.
Papa, mama, Claude's, Lester's, Dells & Aunt Lissa were here & spent
the day. Had a picnic dinner & it was good. The men all but papa went to
B.O. to a Ball Game in P.M. & the rest of us went out in the woods after
hazel nuts & elderberries. They all went home about 6. Arthur came home
this A.M. with papa & mama.

Rained off & on all day. Mon took the boys to school & went on up to
Harry's awhile. He cut corn after he came back until noon. We picked a load
of corn in P.M. Rained hard in the nite.
Tues. Sept. 22
Dandy nice day. Lester & Loyal were here all day. Lester finished here tonite.
Mon finished cutting corn.
Wed. Sept. 23
Dandy nice day. I washed in A.M. Mon picked corn. He cut corn for Dell M. in
P.M. Dad & Ma P. were up for supper. They waited until the chores were done
& took us up town to get our car. I went up home. Olive & the kids were
there.
Thurs. Sept. 24
Not such a nice day. I finished washing in A.M. The feed grinder was here early
this A.M. & they ground 30 sacks then Mon went to Dells to cut corn. It
rained late in P.M. & most of the night.

Rained most of the A.M. off & on. Didn't rain in P.M. but was cold &
gloomy. Ole took Gladys, Fannye, Miriam & I to Club at Sena Masters. Quite
a crowd out & we sure had a swell lunch. Didn't get home until about 6:30.
Rained again in eve.
Sat. Sept. 26
Cloudy & cold most of the day. Cleared off late in P.M. & was nice the
rest of the day & nite. Mon & the boys worked with the pigs until about
2 & then they picked a load of corn. Mon & I went over to Mart's in
eve to the dance. The boys stayed home. Quite a crowd & good music. We got
home about 3. We had 34 little pigs today (5 sows).

Dandy nice day. Mart L. was here awhile in A.M. Ray & Leonard McC., O'Dean
L., Dale A. & Merlin Cassell were here all P.M. Arthur fell down & hurt
his arm. We had 15 more little pigs today.
Mon. Sept. 28
Dandy nice day. Mon finished cutting corn for Dell this A.M. We went to Decorah
in P.M. Stopped up to Price's a minute. We went to B.O. in eve awhile. I went
up to mama's. Sylvia Butler was there.
Tues. Sept. 29
Nice day. We picked corn in A.M. & again in P.M.
Wed. Sept. 30
Rained hard all A.M. & until about 1. Was cloudy almost all of P.M. Sun
shone a little. The B.O. Ball Club were to have had a Field's Day at B.O. in
P.M. but it rained too much they put it off. We went up home at noon too go.
Stopped at school & got the boys. The Morgan boys went along with us too.
Olive & the kids were up to mama's all P.M. too. They had a big dance in
the eve, but we didn't go.

Dandy nice day. I washed in A.M. Mon went to Decorah with Jack Whalen in A.M.
& picked corn in P.M.
Fri. Oct. 2
Dandy nice day. I ironed in A.M. Went to Bluffton in P.M. with Dell, Mettie,
Aunt Lissa, & Mama to the Sale of Ed Jackson's things. Quite a crowd there.
Went to B.O. in eve to the Club Dance. First dance & not many out. Had a
good time while we were there but we came home at supper time.
Sat. Oct. 3
Nice in A.M. but rained off & on in P.M. The boys went over to Deitels right
after breakfast to watch them make sorgum & didn't get home until noon.
Philip S. was here awhile in P.M. We picked a load of corn after dinner &
then went up & got Isa & went to Decorah. Saw Ruth & Francis &
talked to them so long we didn't get home until nearly 7. Arthur stayed up to
mama's while we were gone. Mon & I went over to Mart's in eve to the Dance.
The boys stayed at home. Pretty windy in the barn. We got home about 3.

Lovely day. Pretty warm. Mama & papa came down & spent the day. Uncle
Aaron was here most of the day too. Papa & the boys went to the river fishing
in P.M. They got a few little fellows.
Mon. Oct. 5
Another dandy nice warm day. Mon worked around the house in A.M. & then
picked a load of corn in P.M. I did a little of everything. We went up to Gust's
awhile in eve.
Tues. Oct. 6
Mighty warm day. We picked corn in A.M. & P.M. Dad & Mother P. came
up for supper but it looked so rainy they didn't stay. Just sprinkled a little
then. Rained hard in the nite.
Wed. Oct. 7
Cloudy, windy, cold day. We went up & got the boys at noon & then went
up to mama's for dinner. Big Field Day at B.O. in P.M. & eve. Ruth &
Francis came just as we were about thro' dinner. We went up to the Ball Game
as soon as dinner was over. The Sports were up on Alice Morrison's. B.O. &
Decorah played ball & Decorah won. The Joan of Arc Club served lunch. Didn't
do much. Too cold. Had some fun out of it any way. Ruth & Francis came home
with us to supper & then we went back up town in eve. Run around town awhile
& then went to the Dance. Big crowd out. "Iowa Corn Husker's"
played. Ruth & Francis went home about 10:30 & we came home about 12:30.

Nice sun shiny day but cool. I washed & ironed. Mon picked corn in A.M.
& went up to Whalen's in P.M. shredding. We went up to Lester's in eve a
few minutes. Went in home a minute too. Papa's & mama's 41st Wedding Anniversary.
Fri. Oct. 9
Nice day but cool. Mon shredded at Whalen's. He got home for supper tho'. Lester
was here & picked corn all day. Loyal & Harlan came down with Lester
in A.M. & then the boys & I took them home in P.M. I went to Club at
Iona's. Quite a crowd out & a dandy lunch. Went up to Gust's after supper
& then we all went up town awhile. Lester rode up with us too.
Sat. Oct. 10
Rained quite hard in A.M. & until after dinner. Didn't do much of anything
in A.M. Went to Decorah a while in P.M. Stopped at Price's a few minutes. Got
home about 5. Mon & I went over to Mart's in eve to the Dance. Not many
out. Didn't dance much, but the music was fine. Oscar Anderson & his orchestra.
We got home about 12:30. The boys stayed at home.
Sun. Oct. 11
Nice day but cool. We were up home all day. Claude's were there too. Had a good
time. The men went down town to the Ball Game in P.M. Canoe & B.O. B.O.
beat 4 to 1.
Mon. Oct. 12
Dandy nice day. Mon & I were at Gust's shredding all day. The rig worked
good. Mrs. Seelye, Alice & Gladys were there awhile. The boys had most of
the chores down when we got home. Rained most of the nite.
Tues. Oct. 13
Misty, cloudy cool day. The Joan of Arc served lunch at the Estate Frank Fredenburg's
Sale. Gust R. took Gladys & I. Very large crowd. We sold out everything
at noon & had to go to Decorah & get more. Sure sold our lunch well.
Took in over $60. Got home about 4:30. Mon worked around home all day.
Wed. Oct. 14
Cloudy & misty most of A.M. but the sun shone some in P.M. Mon picked corn
in A.M. & P.M. I did a little of everything.
Thurs. Oct. 15
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Mon shredded
at Harry M's. all day. Walter Jewell picked corn for us all day. We went up
town awhile in eve. Christ & Jim M. went with us. Mon & I each got a
hair cut.
Fri. Oct. 16
Lovely day but cool. Papa & mama came down early in A.M. Papa went shredding
in Mon's place at Harry's. The boys didn't go to school in A.M. Mon & I
went to Decorah & got our meat & groceries for shredders. They pulled
the rig in here about 3. Too late too shred any today. Lloyd K. was here late
in P.M. & bought some hogs so papa & mama helped us shut them up before
they went home. Dance in B.O. tonite, but we didn't go. We had our first frost
tonite. Didn't do any damage.
Sat. Oct. 17
Dandy nice day. We shredded all day on until about 4:30. Kate & mama were
here helping me in A.M. Olive & Claude & the kids came at noon to help.
Arthur, Marie, Marion & I went to B.O. in P.M. Kate went up town with us
& then stopped at her home on our way back. We sold 11 fall shoats at $4.60
& 4 old sows at $4.00 this A.M. Harold R. hauled them about 6 A.M. We got
$171.50 for them. Dance at Mart's tonite, but we didn't go.
Sun. Oct. 18
Dandy nice day. We went up home for dinner. Henry Smalley was buried this P.M.
The funeral was at the M.E. Church at 3 P.M. Rev. Havernos of Mabel. Arthur
S., Mrs. Krumm, Philip & I sang. "What a Friend We Have in Jesus,"
"Shall We Meet" & "God Be With You Till We Meet Again."
Very, very large funeral. Not nearly enough room in the church for them all.
We got two new tires for the car today.
Mon. Oct. 19
Lovely day only rather windy. Papa came down after me early in A.M. & I
went up home & washed. He bro't me back home about 2. Mon shredded at Dave's
& Charlie W's. We went to B.O. in eve to a Negro show. Maxine went with
us. It was pretty good for a little show.
Tues. Oct. 20
Another fine day. Quite warm. Mon shredded at Charlie W's. all day. I finished
digging our potatoes & did quite a few things. Dad & Mother P. &
Uncle Jim were here for supper.
Wed. Oct. 21
Dandy nice day. Mon & I picked a jag of corn early in A.M. & then he
went over to Deitels about 10:30 to shred. He got home about 3:30. I went to
B.O. about 11:30 with Lizzie & Kate L. to the Lutheran L.A.S. Dinner &
Sale. Sure had a swell dinner. Quite a crowd out too. We got home about 3. Went
up town awhile in eve. I went up to mama's.

Cloudy most of the day. Mon shredded at Will Leonhart's all day. Gust &
Kate were here in eve.
Fri. Oct. 23
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Rained quite hard in P.M. Mon
& I picked a jag of corn in A.M. He took me up to Ole's at noon & then
Ole took Gladys, Alice & I to Club at Francis Millers. Quite a crowd out.
Had a dandy lunch. Mon came after us.
Sat. Oct. 24
Nice day. We picked corn in A.M. Mon went over to Krumm's in P.M. & helped
him stack corn fodder. The boys & I went up to mama's awhile in P.M. We
went over to Mart's in eve to the dance. I played the organ all nite. Will &
Walter Norton played the violin & banjo. Not such a big crowd but enough
to have a good time. Pretty cold. The boys came home about 12. We got home about
2:45. We took Olaf & Kate home.

Beautiful day, but cool. We went down to Francis & Ruth's & spent the
day. Had a good time. Some other company came in P.M. Arnold's from Ossian.
The men folks went for a ride in P.M. We got home about 7. Howard was over awhile
in eve.
Mon. Oct. 26
Rained off & on all day. Some times quite hard. We went to Decorah in A.M.
Stopped at Price's awhile. Got back home about 1. We had a lunch & then
I went over & helped Lizzie awhile in P.M. Gust was here in A.M. early.

Tues. Oct. 27
Not very nice day. Cloudy, cold & windy. Mon cut corn for Howard. I went
to a Farm Bureau Meeting at Lizzie's. Krumm's came after me about 1 to go to
B.O. & sing for Ida Heckle's funeral. Mr. K., Philip S., Mrs. K., Maude
Jacobson & I sang "God Will Take Care of You", "Does Jesus
Care" & "Rock of Ages." Quite a few out. We got back to Lizzie's
a little after 3 so we were in on the finish of the meeting. I rode home with
Gladys & Ole. I got home about 5. It was a good meeting.

Not very nice day. Cloudy & rainy all day & nite. We went up home about
noon & stayed awhile.
Thurs. Oct. 29
Cold, rainy day. Didn't do much of anything. Dave was over awhile in P.M. Mon
went up town in P.M. & traded our gas lantern for a new one. When he went
to light it in eve it wouldn't light so we were out of luck. Ruth Padden &
her father were up to Isa's & mama's this P.M.
Fri. Oct. 30
Cloudy, cold day. We went up home about noon & were there for dinner. Mrs.
Albert Hruska was there awhile in P.M. Mon took the lantern back & Ben fixed
it so it worked fine. We went to B.O. in eve to the Dance. Quite a crowd out.
Had a pretty good time. Got home about 2. Dean stayed up home all nite.

A little nicer day but still cold & cloudy. We sold 17 hogs this A.M. Lyle
Master hauled them. Mon & Arthur went to Prosper with the hogs. Dean came
home with them. Mon, Dean & I went to Decorah in P.M. Stopped at Price's
quite a while so it was almost 4 when we got down town. Had to hurry like everything.
Went to B.O. in eve to the Joan of Arc Oyster Supper. Big crowd. Sold out everything.
Got home about 9:30. 17 hogs at $4.15 per cwt. $170.15.

Quite a bit nicer. The sun shone quite a little & it was warmer. The boys
& I were up to mama's all day. Marion was here with Mon. Claudes & Lena
& Clifford were at mama's all P.M. Froze hard in the nite. Froze the ground
some.

Dandy nice day. Olaf L., Arnold D. & Howard helped Mon stock the corn fodder.
They got down about 3.

Another nice day only terribly windy. I did part of my washing in A.M. Ole &
Gladys came down after me about 1 & we went up town to practice. Got back
home about 3. Ironed some & did a little of everything after I got home.
Mon picked up corn all day. Mike & Leonard Blaess were here awhile in eve.

Quite a nice day but cool & windy. I helped Mon pick up corn in A.M. &
ironed & did a little of everything in P.M. We went up town awhile in eve.

Dandy nice day only cold. Mama, Isa & Loyal came down early in A.M. &
spent the day. The boys & I took them home about 4.

Nice day. Mon did quite a few jobs in A.M. & started plowing in P.M. Ole
took Gladys & I to Club at Louise N's. at noon & then Arthur & Dean
came after us after school. Quite a few there & had a good time. We stopped
at Arnold's a minute on our way home & saw the baby.
Sat. Nov. 7
Wonderful day. Too warm for this time of the year. The boys & Mon finished
picking our corn this A.M. Mon plowed in P.M. The boys went hunting. Got 2 squirrels.
Dale & Arland were here too. We went up town in eve. The boys & I went
up home. Mon went coon hunting with Harold L. awhile. We got home about 11:30.
Olive & Isa & their kids were at mama's too. Lester went to Dubuque
today to spend Sunday.

Another wonderful day. Leonard Mc. was here all day. He & the boys were
hunting most of the day. Gust was here awhile in A.M. & then Mon went over
to Gilbert's with him awhile. Mon went up to Harry's about noon for a little
while. He took me over to Floyd's in P.M. Gust & Kate, Mrs. Lovelien, Jane
Gilbertson & Irene were there too. I rode home with Gust & Kate.

Cloudy & gloomy most of the day. Rained off & on in P.M. Wind changed
into the north in eve & it got much colder. Rained quite hard too. Mon was
sick all day. In bed most of the time. Howard was over a few minutes in A.M.

Nice day. Quite warm. Mon is better today. He took Mrs. Krumm up town to practice
in P.M. & then no one else came. We went up to Hazel Pierce's a few minutes.

Gloomy, cloudy, misty day. Mon is about the same. We went up home about 9:30
& took mama & papa to Decorah. Papa run a nail in his hand yesterday
& he went to the Dr. with it this A.M. We stopped at Price's a few minutes
on our way down town. We got back up home about 12:30. Stayed there for dinner.
Howard & Pearl & Roy Thompson (the McConnon man) were here & spent
the eve. We played euchre until about 12. It rained hard in the eve & the
thunder & lightning were pretty sharp.

Cloudy & cold in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. I washed windows
& Mon put on storm windows in A.M. Didn't do much of anything in P.M. Ed
& Roscoe Dawley were here awhile in eve. Mon is some better so is papa's

Dandy nice day. Mon plowed all day. I washed & did some of my ironing. Arthur
took Lizzie & I to Bluffton after school. Jim Murdock was having a sale
day at the store. Had free coffee & cookies. There was a young man here
for dinner. An insurance agent. Big dance in B.O. tonite but we didn't go.

came down in A.M. & was here for dinner. Mon & the boys went up to Jack's

Gloomy, cloudy day. Dean helped Gust drive cattle early in A.M. & then we
went down to Claude's & spent the day. Papa & mama & Lester's were

Nice early in A.M. but clouded up about noon & wasn't so nice. Mon &
Arthur went up to Harry's early in A.M. & got one of his horses. They banked
the house after they got home. Mon plowed in P.M. We went up town in eve. Went
up home. Rained in the nite.

Rained hard most of the day. Mon was over to Howard's in A.M. awhile. Cleared
off about 4 P.M. We shut up hogs to sell after school.
Wed. Nov. 18
Very nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. I washed & ironed. We sold 30 hogs
this A.M. at $3.90 per. cwt. They weighed 6330 & bro't us $246.85. Harold
R. & Lyle M. hauled them early this A.M. Mon went to Prosper with them &
then down to John Greenslade's with them. The boys & I went up town after
school. Mon plowed in P.M.

Not very nice day. Mon plowed all day. I did a little of everything.

Cloudy & dark in A.M. Rained terribly hard in P.M. The thunder & lightning
was bad too. Mon plowed until it rained so hard. Club at Lucile Pierce's this
P.M. but I didn't have any way too go so stayed at home. Mon went up to school
after the boys. Had a beautiful rainbow about 4:30 & a beautiful sunset.

I went up home about 9 & then mama & Isa went to Decorah with us. We
got home about 1. Mon plowed all day. We went up town in eve. I went up to Jensens
to practice awhile & then went to mama's. Olive & the kids were there

got mama early in A.M. Claudes came at noon so we had them all here for dinner.
They took mama home then they went about 5. Had a good time. Ole & Gladys
were here a minute in eve.

Quite a nice day. Didn't do much of anything. We went up home for supper 7 then
went to the dance. Quite a crowd out. We came home at supper time. Mon got a
black eye. The boys stayed up home all nite.

Not very nice day. We went up home about noon. I helped mama a little. Mon's
folks came up here in P.M. so we had to come home. They stayed for supper. Warren
was along too.

dinner up there today because papa had to work Thursday. Claude's, Lester's,
Dells, Aunt Lissa, Aunt Till & Lawrence were there too. Had a swell dinner.

to Krumm's in eve. We practiced there. Got home about 10:30.

Arc Club today. 24 members here. We had initiations. Mrs. Norlie & Beatrice
Anderson joined. Cecil Wicks & Vernie M. were here too. Arthur took mama
home about 4:30. We went to B.O. in eve. I went up to Smith's to practice. Got
thro' about 11. Mon went to the Dance. Last one of the year. Election of officers
& free dance. Cecil Wicks & Alfred Young managers & treas. &
Ruth Greenslade Sec. I went down there after practice. Had a good time. Got
home about 2. The boys stayed up home all nite.

& they butchered a hog for us in P.M. We took Marion back to Albert's about

Cloudy, foggy day. Mon took Mrs. K. & I up town in P.M. to practice. We
practiced at mama's. Jim & Christ came down in eve & played cards. They
went home about 11. It rained hard in the eve & nite. Andrew Erickson died

Cloudy misty day. Quite warm. Didn't do much of anything. Didn't go to B.O.
in eve to the dance. Too muddy. Froze hard in the nite.

Nice day. I washed in A.M. & then we went up home for dinner. The boys came
home about 5 did & the chores & then came back up there for supper.
Mon & I stayed up there & didn't come down with them. Practiced at mama's
in eve a little. Got home about 12. Dean stayed up home all nite.

Dandy nice day. We went up to Carl Richardson's & spent the day. Lester,
Isa & the boys went with us. Arthur stayed at mamas but Dean went with us.
Had a good time. Got home about 5:30. Christ & Jim were down & spent
the eve & played cards. Vin K. brot mamas calf down here in A.M. & got
our jersey heifer. We exchanged with the folks.

Dandy nice day. Mon helped Howard saw in A.M. & then we went up to mama's
& sawed in P.M. Ed Dawley sawed. We got home about 5:30. Ed was here awhile
in eve. Pearl was too. Andrew Erickson was buried at Hesper this P.M.
Tues. Dec. 15
Dandy nice day. Ole took Gladys, Audry & I to a Farm Bureau Meeting at Myrtle
M's. Not many out but we had a busy meeting. Remodeling clothes. Had a good
dinner & a good time. Mon was up town all day. He helped Lester saw wood
in P.M.
Wed. Dec. 16
Dandy nice day. We went up home about 9:30 & got mama & then went to
Decorah. Stopped at Price's awhile on our way down. Got home about 1:30. Mr.
& Mrs. P. came up here about 3 & stayed for supper. They went home about
7. We went up town in eve. There was a Farm Bureau Meeting at the M.E. Church
& I went to that. Our ladies quartette sang songs. Vera G., Hazel Pierce,
Mrs. K & I. We sang "Whispering Hope" & "The Farm Bureau
Spirit." Mrs. Randlett spoke. She was just fine. We got home about 10.

Dandy nice day. Did a little of everything. Grace & Floyd B. were here awhile.

Dandy nice day. I washed in A.M. Mon took Gladys & I to Club at Agnes W's.
Quite a few out. Had a nice time & a dandy lunch. Got home about 4:30. Arthur
walked up home after school. I did my ironing after super & then we went
up town. Went up home awhile. The Iowa Corn Huskers were going to have a dance
in the Hall tonite. They started but not much of a crowd came so they quit about
10. We came home then. Arthur stayed up home.

Foggy & misty in A.M. awhile, but cleared off & was a beautiful day.
We got our meat cut up & put on to cook in A.M. Had 14 qts. cold pack. Made
some sausage & tried out some lard in P.M. Mon & Dean were over to Mart
L's. in P.M. & helped saw wood.

Cloudy, misty, foggy day. Rather cool. We went up home & spent the day.
Ruth (Robinson) Coltie came just as we finished dinner. I went up to the church
in P.M. to practice. Arthur came home with us. Mary had a little calf today.

Cloudy, misty day. The boys didn't go to school. We went up & got mama &
then all went to Decorah. Stopped at Prices a while on our way down. Didn't
get back to mama's until about 3. Had dinner there & then came on home.
The frost went out today & it was pretty muddy getting home. Had to stop
over on the hill & put our chains on before we could get home. I sold my
4 goslings today. They weighed 51 lbs & I got .08 so they came to $4.08.
The white cow had a calf today.
Tues. Dec. 22
Cloudy, misty day. Rather windy tho'. Brightened up a little in P.M. but didn't
amount to much. Did a little of everything. Pearl was here a few minutes in
eve & Howard in A.M. & eve too.
Wed. Dec. 23
Not very nice day. Made candy for Xmas & did quite a few other things. Harold
& Audry were here a few minutes in P.M. School was out today for Xmas vacation.
We went to B.O. in eve to the Club Dance. Not such a big crowd out but we had
a good time. Started for home about 2. Planned to take Audry & Harold home
so we started the north road. Got past way down the first hill west of the pavement
& went in all over. Mon & Harold walked on over to Harold Seelye's &
got him & his team & he hauled us out. We went on as far as his place
& tore a chain all to pieces & lost one so we stopped there. Harold
L. walked back too town & got a set of chains & when they got them on
& ready to start for home it was 5 o'clock. We took Harold & Audry on
home & it was 5:40 when we got home. I laid down then until 7. Mon didn't
go to bed at all. It snowed terribly hard while we were coming home from Harold
S's. The boys stayed up home all nite.
Thurs. Dec. 24
Not very nice day. Quite warm. We went up home about 10. Mon, papa & the
boys went to Decorah. Papa traded his old Ford in toward a Chevrolet something
like ours. It looks nice. We came home about 4. The road was sure terrible coming
home. It froze hard in the nite.
Fri. Dec. 25
Beautiful Xmas Day. Thawed quite a little. We went up home & spent the day.
Lesters were there too. The roads were not so bad today. Froze too much.
Sat. Dec. 26
Not such a nice day. Pretty windy. Claude & Leonard came up in A.M. &
got a pig. Dean went home with them & stayed all nite. Arthur chopped wood
all P.M. Mon & I dressed a duck & had it for supper. Howard & Pearl
were over for supper & spent the eve. We played cards until about 12.
Sun. Dec. 27
Quite a nice day. Isa's Birthday. We were too go up there today but the roads
were so bad we didn't go. Dean came home this A.M. Dave was here awhile in A.M.
Mon. Dec. 28
Cloudy, gloomy day. Didn't do much of anything.
Tues. Dec. 29
Not very nice day. Pretty windy. I washed & ironed. Mon & the boys went
up to Bust's in P.M. Rained most all nite.
Wed. Dec. 30
Not very nice day. Rainy & sleety most all day & nite. Wind blew hard.
We went up home & spent the day. Pretty muddy. Arthur's cow had a calf.
Froze up solid in the nite.
Thurs. Dec. 31
Regular blizzard only not cold & not too much snow. Some good sized drifts
tho'. Didn't do much of anything.
